Chapter 18: Chapter Sixteen: Seventeen Days Until the Heart Awakens

The first thing Lin Yue did after learning that the Central Engine would awaken in seventeen days was—

make a list.

Shen Rui watched her write.

One page.

Two pages.

Three.

Then she turned the page over and continued.

He finally asked, ”How long is this list?”

Lin Yue didn’t look up.

”I don’t know yet.”

”You’ve already written six pages.”

”Those are only the urgent items.”

He stared at her.

”What counts as non-urgent?”

Lin Yue paused.

”Decorating the guest rooms.”

Shen Rui blinked.

”You’ve planned guest rooms?”

”We may have visitors.”

”We are preparing for an ancient machine that could potentially alter an entire kingdom.”

”Yes.”

”And you’re worried about guest rooms?”

”Civilization still needs somewhere to sleep.”

Shen Rui had no answer to that.

The Seventeen-Day Plan

Lin Yue divided the preparations into seven categories.

One — Food

The farm needed enough grain, vegetables, dried food, seeds, and animal feed to survive disruptions.

Two — Water

Every reservoir needed inspection.

Every channel needed clearing.

Every well needed protection.

Three — People

Workers needed training.

Families needed emergency plans.

Children needed safe shelters.

Four — Knowledge

Important records had to be copied.

Agricultural manuals had to be printed.

Ancient documents had to be preserved.

Five — Manufacturing

The workshops needed standardized tools.

Spare parts had to be produced.

Blacksmiths and carpenters needed apprentices.

Six — Finance

Every project needed proper accounting.

Costs had to be recorded.

Resources had to be tracked.

Seven — The Central Engine

Nobody knew what would happen when it activated.

So Lin Yue wrote:

Prepare for everything.

Then she stared at the words.

”That isn’t very specific.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”It’s honest.”

The First Rule

Lin Yue gathered everyone in the ancient city.

She stood before the enormous assembly hall.

”The Central Engine will activate in seventeen days.”

The room became silent.

”We don’t know exactly what it does.”

A nervous murmur spread through the crowd.

”So we’re not going to guess.”

She pointed toward the workers.

”We prepare.”

Toward the engineers.

”We observe.”

Toward the farmers.

”We protect food.”

Toward the teachers.

”We protect knowledge.”

Toward the Guardians.

”We protect people.”

Then she raised one finger.

”And nobody touches anything glowing unless I say so.”

General crowed.

Lin Yue turned.

”That includes you.”

The rooster looked offended.

The Engineering Council

Lin Yue established a temporary council.

Not nobles.

Not officials.

Workers.

Farmers.

Engineers.

Teachers.

Accountants.

Blacksmiths.

Guardians.

Everyone received one responsibility.

The purpose was simple:

No single person should control the entire system.

Lin Yue remembered Arden’s final warning.

The greatest danger of civilization is dependence.

So she deliberately distributed knowledge.

The irrigation team learned the water system.

The farmers learned seed preservation.

The printers learned the presses.

The blacksmiths learned machine maintenance.

The accountants learned inventory management.

The teachers learned emergency procedures.

Even the children received simple lessons.

If everyone understood something—

no one person could hold it hostage.

The Accounting Room

The first unexpected problem came from the accounts.

Lin Yue discovered that the farm was making more money than she realized.

She stared at the ledger.

”What?”

Uncle Zhao looked nervous.

”What happened?”

”We made a profit.”

”I know.”

”No.”

He pointed at the numbers.

”A large profit.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”How?”

”Vegetables.”

”Vegetables?”

”Your preserved vegetables are extremely popular.”

She looked at the sales records.

Pickled radishes.

Dried mushrooms.

Preserved beans.

Fermented vegetables.

Smoked meat.

Her eyebrows rose.

”We’re making money from food preservation.”

Uncle Zhao nodded.

”And the printed farming manuals.”

”Those too?”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue leaned back.

She had started the farm because she wanted stability.

Now the farm had become a business.

A rather successful one.

She immediately wrote another rule:

Never confuse revenue with wealth.

Uncle Zhao looked puzzled.

Lin Yue explained.

”Money isn’t enough.”

She pointed toward the fields.

”We need productive land.”

Toward the workshop.

”Useful tools.”

Toward the warehouse.

”Stored resources.”

Toward the school.

”Skilled people.”

Then toward the library.

”Knowledge.”

”That,” she said, ”is real wealth.”

The First Standardized Tool

The blacksmith arrived with something wrapped in cloth.

”Miss.”

Lin Yue looked up.

”What is it?”

He unwrapped it.

A farming hoe.

At first glance, it looked ordinary.

Then she noticed the measurements.

The handle.

The blade.

The angle.

Everything had been standardized.

”We made ten identical ones.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Excellent.”

The blacksmith beamed.

”Why is that important?”

Lin Yue asked.

”Because if one breaks, we can replace the part.”

She picked up another.

”And if we need a hundred?”

”We make a hundred.”

”Exactly.”

The blacksmith looked proud.

Lin Yue had taught him something that sounded simple but would transform manufacturing:

Standardization.

If every tool was slightly different, repairs became difficult.

If parts were interchangeable, production became faster.

And suddenly—

a small workshop could become an industry.

The First Water Wheel

The next project was even more ambitious.

A water wheel.

The river turned beneath the ancient city.

Lin Yue studied the current.

Then the old machinery.

Then the surviving gears.

The ancient system had once used water power to drive multiple machines.

She didn’t want to rebuild the entire thing.

Not yet.

Instead, she designed a smaller system.

A wheel.

A shaft.

Gears.

A grinding mechanism.

Nothing magical.

Just physics.

The first test was terrible.

The wheel turned.

Then stopped.

Everyone stared.

Lin Yue frowned.

”Why?”

The engineer beside her said:

”The gear ratio.”

Lin Yue checked the measurements.

He was right.

She smiled.

”Good.”

The engineer blinked.

”Good?”

”Yes.”

She adjusted the design.

”This is why we test.”

The Second Test

The wheel turned again.

Slowly.

Then faster.

The shaft began rotating.

The grinding mechanism moved.

Grain poured into the hopper.

The stone turned.

Flour emerged.

The workers erupted in cheers.

Lin Yue laughed.

It wasn’t a magical machine.

It wasn’t an ancient superweapon.

It was a water-powered mill.

But to her—

it was beautiful.

Because it meant one thing:

Less human labor.

A farmer could spend less time grinding grain.

That time could be used for planting.

Repairing.

Learning.

Resting.

Living.

Lin Yue smiled.

”This is civilization.”

Shen Rui stood beside her.

”Because of a mill?”

”Because we made work easier.”

He nodded.

”I understand.”

The Little Romance

That evening, Lin Yue sat beside the river.

Her hands were covered in flour.

Shen Rui brought her a cloth.

”You look exhausted.”

”I am.”

”Then stop working.”

”I can’t.”

”You can.”

She looked at him.

”There are seventeen days.”

”There are seventeen days because the machine isn’t going anywhere.”

She smiled.

”You’re becoming bossy.”

”Someone has to be.”

She wiped flour from her cheek.

Shen Rui stared.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”You’re staring again.”

He reached toward her face.

Lin Yue froze.

His fingers gently brushed away a streak of flour.

”You had flour here.”

She suddenly became very aware of how close he was.

”Oh.”

He smiled.

”Better.”

Neither moved.

Then Moon sneezed loudly.

They jumped apart.

Lin Yue glared at the fox.

”You have terrible timing.”

Moon looked pleased.

Shen Rui laughed.

The Printing Revolutionℯ

By the fifth day, the first batch of agricultural manuals was ready.

Five hundred copies.

The printing hall worked from sunrise until evening.

The books contained:

crop rotation,

composting,

soil conservation,

seed selection,

clean water practices,

food preservation,

basic accounting,

animal care,

and flood preparation.

Lin Yue deliberately avoided complicated language.

”If farmers can’t understand it, it isn’t useful.”

The books were distributed to surrounding villages.

Some were sold cheaply.

Others were given to poor families.

The royal government paid for several thousand additional copies.

Within days, requests began arriving.

More villages wanted them.

Then schools.

Then provincial officials.

Then merchants.

Lin Yue stared at the growing order list.

”We need another printing press.”

The printer nodded.

”We’re already building one.”

She smiled.

”Good.”

The First Apprentices

The workshops became crowded.

Young people arrived from surrounding villages.

They wanted to learn:

carpentry,

metalworking,

printing,

masonry,

surveying,

accounting,

agriculture,

and machine maintenance.

Lin Yue insisted that apprentices learn theory as well as practice.

A blacksmith needed arithmetic.

A carpenter needed geometry.

An engineer needed accounting.

A farmer needed basic science.

A printer needed mechanical knowledge.

Everyone needed reading and writing.

One apprentice complained:

”Why must a blacksmith learn mathematics?”

Lin Yue handed him two metal pieces.

”Because if you make this incorrectly, the machine breaks.”

He immediately asked for a mathematics book.

The Sanitation Campaign

Lin Yue’s next project spread even faster.

Clean water.

The farm began constructing simple sanitation systems in nearby villages.

Separate drinking-water sources from waste.

Covered wells.

Drainage.

Handwashing stations.

Waste disposal.

Food storage.

The changes were not glamorous.

But they were effective.

Within months, families noticed fewer illnesses.

Lin Yue kept records.

She wanted evidence.

Not stories.

Numbers.

How many people became sick?

How often?

What changed?

Which villages improved?

Which practices failed?

The information went into the school library.

Knowledge became data.

Data became policy.

Policy became practice.

The Council Watches

Not everyone was impressed.

The Third Council continued watching.

A spy reported:

”The Keeper is expanding.”

”How?”

”Schools.”

”Machines.”

”Farms.”

”Printing.”

”Water systems.”

The council member frowned.

”She is building influence.”

”Yes.”

”Military power?”

”No.”

”Political power?”

”Not directly.”

”Then what is she building?”

The spy hesitated.

”A functioning society.”

Silence.

That answer frightened them more than an army would have.

Day Ten

Ten days remained.

The Central Engine was visibly awakening.

Every evening, the mountain trembled.

Ancient lights appeared beneath the city.

The river occasionally glowed gold.

Machines that had been broken for centuries began moving on their own.

Lin Yue ordered everyone to stay calm.

”Record everything.”

The engineers created observation logs.

Time.

Location.

Temperature.

Water flow.

Light intensity.

Mechanical activity.

Nothing was ignored.

Lin Yue didn’t trust unexplained magic.

But she could still collect evidence.

The Strange Seed

On the eleventh day, a farmer brought Lin Yue a plant.

It had grown beside the central tower.

The plant was unlike anything she had seen.

Its leaves were silver-green.

Its stem was dark blue.

And at the center was a small golden flower.

Lin Yue stared.

The golden space immediately responded.

[Unknown plant detected.]

[Classification incomplete.]

[Do not consume.]

Lin Yue immediately stepped back.

”Good advice.”

The farmer looked disappointed.

”But it looks edible.”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because the magical system literally told us not to eat it.”

The farmer nodded.

”That seems reasonable.”

Lin Yue carefully collected a sample.

Not to eat.

To study.

The Golden Space’s New Feature

That night, she entered the golden space.

Something had changed.

The library now contained a new room.

Research Archive.

Lin Yue stared.

Inside were empty shelves.

No books.

No information.

Just a message:

Knowledge must be earned through observation.

She smiled.

For once, the golden finger wasn’t giving her answers.

It was giving her a laboratory.

She liked that.

Day Twelve — The First Failure

The northern reservoir cracked.

Water began leaking.

The workers panicked.

Lin Yue arrived immediately.

She examined the structure.

”Don’t repair it yet.”

Everyone stared.

”Why?”

”We need to know why it failed.”

They drained part of the reservoir.

The engineers inspected the foundation.

The problem became clear.

The soil beneath one section had shifted.

Lin Yue nodded.

”Good.”

Everyone stared at her.

She smiled.

”Another lesson.”

They reinforced the foundation.

Then rebuilt the damaged section.

The reservoir became stronger than before.

Lin Yue wrote the failure into the engineering manual.

Do not hide failures.

Study them.

Learn from them.

Day Thirteen — The Family Dinner

That night, Lin Yue’s family gathered around one table.

For once, nobody discussed engineering.

They discussed food.

Her stepmother, Madam Zhao served stew.

Her father complained that General had stolen vegetables.

Qiao’er complained that General had stolen her bread.

Uncle Zhao complained that General had attacked the accounting ledger.

Everyone looked at General.

The rooster sat beneath the table.

Lin Yue narrowed her eyes.

”You’ve become a criminal.”

General crowed.

Her stepmother laughed.

”You spoil him.”

”I do not.”

”You do.”

Lin Yue looked at the rooster.

General looked back.

She sighed.

”Perhaps slightly.”

Shen Rui smiled.

Her father noticed.

He said nothing.

Her stepmother noticed too.

She also said nothing.

Instead, she quietly served Shen Rui another bowl of stew.

Lin Yue noticed.

”Mother.”

”What?”

”You gave him more.”

”He works hard.”

Lin Yue looked at Shen Rui.

He looked at her.

Neither said anything.

Her stepmother smiled innocently.

Day Fourteen — The Warning

Three days remained.

The Central Engine became louder.

Deep beneath the city—

something enormous turned.

The sound resembled a heartbeat.

Boom.

The entire city vibrated.

Then the golden system displayed:

[Central Engine synchronization: 72%.]

Lin Yue stared.

”Seventy-two percent?”

Shen Rui frowned.

”What happens at one hundred?”

”We don’t know.”

Han Zhen’s expression darkened.

”There is one possibility.”

Lin Yue turned.

”What?”

”The engine may connect the golden space to the ancient network.”

”And?”

”It could awaken more than this city.”

”How much more?”

Han Zhen looked toward the horizon.

”The entire Northern Mountain system.”

Lin Yue went silent.

That meant rivers.

Forests.

Ancient machines.

Buried structures.

Perhaps even other cities.

The scale was enormous.

Day Fifteen — The Third Council Arrives

They came openly this time.

No arrows.

No soldiers hiding in the forest.

Three representatives of the Third Council walked through the city gates.

Lin Yue met them in the assembly hall.

The oldest man bowed.

”Keeper.”

Lin Yue returned the bow.

”Councilor.”

”You know why we are here.”

”Yes.”

”The Central Engine must not activate.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Why?”

”Because we don’t know what will happen.”

She nodded.

”Neither do I.”

”Then shut it down.”

Lin Yue stared.

”Can you?”

The councilor hesitated.

”No.”

”Can I?”

Silence.

”We don’t know.”

Lin Yue smiled faintly.

”Then perhaps the correct question isn’t whether we can stop it.”

She looked toward the glowing tower.

”It is whether we can prepare for it.”

The Council’s Secret

The councilor finally revealed the truth.

”The Central Engine was designed to reconnect the ancient civilization.”

Lin Yue listened.

”It controls water networks.”

”Energy systems.”

”Communication systems.”

”Transportation infrastructure.”

”Manufacturing facilities.”

”Research centers.”

She slowly understood.

The ancient civilization hadn’t been one city.

It had been a network.

The Northern City was merely one node.

The Central Engine could reconnect them.

”But why was it shut down?”

The councilor’s expression became grim.

”Because the previous Keeper used it to centralize everything.”

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

Arden.

Again.

”He turned the network into a system of control.”

”Yes.”

”And the Guardians shut it down.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue looked at the councilor.

”And now you want me to shut it down again.”

”We want you to prevent another disaster.”

Lin Yue considered the request.

Then shook her head.

”No.”

The councilor stiffened.

”Why?”

”Because shutting down knowledge because someone once abused it is not a solution.”

She stood.

”The solution is building safeguards.”

Day Sixteen — The Final Preparation

One day remained.

Lin Yue gathered everyone.

There was no grand speech.

Only instructions.

Food stores checked.

Water systems checked.

Shelters prepared.

Medical stations stocked.

Machines secured.

Animals moved to safe areas.

Important documents copied.

Children placed with assigned adults.

Communication signals tested.

Every team knew its job.

Lin Yue looked around.

The settlement was ready.

Not because she had prepared everything.

Because everyone had learned how to prepare themselves.

That was the difference.

She smiled.

”We’re ready.”

Shen Rui stood beside her.

”Are you?”

She looked toward the tower.

”No.”

He nodded.

”Good.”

She laughed.

”You’ve started copying me.”

”Perhaps.”

The Seventeenth Day

Morning came.

The sky was cloudless.

The river stopped flowing.

The entire city became silent.

Then—

the Central Engine awakened.

A golden pulse passed through the mountain.

The ground shook.

Every ancient machine activated.

The water wheels turned.

The printing presses moved.

The city lights became brighter.

The mountains lit up.

Far beyond the valley—

another light appeared.

Then another.

Lin Yue stared at the horizon.

”Those aren’t stars.”

Han Zhen whispered:

”Ancient cities.”

One by one, they awakened.

The network was reconnecting.

Then the golden space displayed a message.

[Central Network restored.]

[Ancient civilization infrastructure partially recovered.]

[Keeper authorization required.]

Three choices appeared.

REBUILD CONTROL ABANDON

Lin Yue stared at the three words.

Shen Rui stood beside her.

”What will you choose?”

She smiled.

”None of them.”

He looked surprised.

She touched the glowing interface.

A fourth option appeared.

The entire city went silent.

The system flickered.

Then—

[New command recognized.]

[Keeper principle accepted.]

[Network permissions redistributed.]

[Centralized authority rejected.]

[Distributed stewardship enabled.]

The ancient lights changed.

No longer did they shine from one central tower.

They spread across the mountains.

Across villages.

Across rivers.

Across farms.

Across schools.

Across workshops.

Knowledge moved outward.

Power became distributed.

Lin Yue watched in awe.

The civilization had been waiting centuries for someone to make one decision.

Not to become its ruler.

But to refuse the throne.

The golden system displayed its final message:

[Development:50%.]

[Central Engine fully awakened.]

Then another:

[Congratulations, Keeper.]

[You have reached the Civilization Foundation Stage.]

Lin Yue smiled.

She thought everything was finally over.

Then the ground beneath the city opened.

A vast staircase descended into darkness.

At the bottom—

something began to glow.

Shen Rui looked down.

Lin Yue swallowed.

”What now?”

A voice echoed from beneath the earth.

Ancient.

Calm.

Almost human.

”Keeper.”

Lin Yue froze.

The voice continued.

”If you wish to rebuild the world...”

The golden light grew brighter.

”...first, you must discover why it was destroyed.”

And deep beneath the Northern City—

a door that had been sealed for a thousand years

slowly began to open.
