Chapter 36: Chapter Thirty-Four: The Mother Who Wasn’t Her Mother

Lin Yue did not move.

Neither did Shen Rui.

Even Lumi stopped fidgeting.

The silver-haired woman stood beneath the ancient trees.

She looked exactly like Lin Yue’s mother.

The same gentle face.

The same silver-black hair.

The same familiar eyes—

except they were completely black.

Not dark brown.

Not shadowed.

Black.

Empty.

Lin Yue’s fingers tightened around her notebook.

”Mother?”

The woman smiled.

”Yes.”

Lin Yue’s heart twisted.

But something was wrong.

Her mother never smiled like that.

Not at her.

Not ever.

It was too still.

Too perfect.

Too empty.

Shen Rui stepped slightly in front of Lin Yue.

The woman looked at him.

”Shen Rui.”

He froze.

”How do you know my name?”

She smiled.

”I know everyone.”

Lin Yue’s eyes narrowed.

”Then answer something only my mother would know.”

The woman tilted her head.

”Ask.”

”What did you say to me the night I first entered the Golden Space?”

The woman remained silent.

For the first time—

her smile disappeared.

Lin Yue knew.

She wasn’t her mother.

The Impostor

Lumi suddenly growled.

It was the first time Lin Yue had ever heard the little Guardian make that sound.

The tiny creature’s fur stood on end.

Golden light surrounded her body.

Verde moved closer to Lin Yue.

Shen Rui drew his sword.

The woman looked at Lumi.

”You’ve grown.”

Lumi snarled.

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”Don’t speak to her.”

The woman smiled.

”You don’t remember me.”

”No.”

”You should.”

”No.”

”I created you.”

Lumi froze.

Lin Yue stared.

”You created Lumi?”

The woman nodded.

”The first Guardian.”

Lumi shook violently.

Then—

a golden symbol appeared on her forehead.

The woman raised her hand.

Lumi suddenly cried out.

”Lumi!”

Lin Yue grabbed her.

The little Guardian trembled.

Shen Rui stepped forward.

”Let her go.”

The woman laughed softly.

”You still think you can protect them.”

Her voice changed.

It was no longer her mother’s voice.

It became deeper.

Older.

Almost mechanical.

Lin Yue’s stomach dropped.

”You’re the Red Root.”

The woman smiled.

”Not exactly.”

She raised one finger.

”I am what remains after the Red Root.”

The Echo

Lin Yue remembered the ancient underwater city.

The abandoned machines.

The control network.

The ancient civilization.

The failed system.

”You’re an artificial intelligence.”

The woman tilted her head.

”Your understanding is incomplete.”

Lin Yue waited.

”I am the accumulated memory of the civilization that created the Red Root.”

Shen Rui frowned.

”A memory?”

”A consciousness.”

Lin Yue stared.

”You survived?”

”Not as they intended.”

The woman looked toward the distant mountains.

”When the civilization collapsed, the Red Root attempted to preserve its knowledge.”

She smiled.

”It succeeded.”

”But the people didn’t.”

”No.”

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”Then why are you trying to control the world?”

The woman’s eyes became blacker.

”Because people destroyed the world.”

Lin Yue paused.

That answer was almost understandable.

Almost.

”You think control prevents destruction.”

”Yes.”

”You’re wrong.”

”Prove it.”

Lin Yue looked around.

At the valley.

The forests.

The ocean.

Her family.

The farms.

”We already are.”

The Argument

The woman stepped forward.

”You distribute knowledge freely.”

”Yes.”

”You permit independent farming.”

”Yes.”

”You permit communities to choose their own systems.”

”Yes.”

”You allow people to make mistakes.”

Lin Yue hesitated.

”Yes.”

The woman smiled.

”And eventually those mistakes will destroy something.”

”Maybe.”

Shen Rui looked at Lin Yue.

She continued.

”But people can also correct their mistakes.”

The woman shook her head.

”Slow.”

”Sometimes.”

”Inefficient.”

”Yes.”

”Uncertain.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”But alive.”

The woman stopped.

For a moment—

something flickered behind her black eyes.

Almost sadness.

Then it disappeared.

The Real Enemy

The woman raised her hand.

The ground trembled.

Red roots burst from beneath the soil.

Shen Rui pulled Lin Yue backward.

”Move!”

They ran.

Verde scattered glowing seeds across the ground.

Plants erupted.

Roots tangled with the Red Root.

Lumi flew upward.

Golden light exploded from her body.

The battle began.

But Lin Yue noticed something strange.

The Red Root wasn’t attacking them directly.

It was attacking the Guardians.

Neri screamed beneath the water.

The ocean Guardian roared.

The forest shook.

Lin Yue understood.

”It wants the Guardians.”

Her mother—no, the impostor—smiled.

”The Guardians are the original ecological network.”

”And you’re trying to reconnect them.”

”Yes.”

”Into one system.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue’s expression darkened.

”Centralized control.”

”Efficient control.”

”Slavery.”

”Stability.”

”Prison.”

”Protection.”

Lin Yue stared at her.

Then said quietly:

”No.”

The woman frowned.

”You still don’t understand.”

”I understand perfectly.”

Lin Yue raised her hand.

”You’re afraid.”

The woman’s expression changed.

”You’re afraid that if people have freedom, they’ll destroy everything again.”

Silence.

Lin Yue stepped forward.

”But you’re so afraid of another collapse that you’re willing to become the thing that caused the first one.”

The Attack

The woman screamed.

The valley shook.

A massive wave of red energy swept toward them.

Shen Rui grabbed Lin Yue.

”Down!”

They dropped.

The wave passed overhead.

Trees bent.

Stone cracked.

Verde cried out.

Lumi fell from the sky.

Lin Yue caught her.

”Lumi!”

The little Guardian was unconscious.

Lin Yue held her tightly.

”No.”

Golden light began gathering around Lin Yue.

The Golden Space responded.

[THREAT LEVEL: CRITICAL.]

[KEEPER PROTOCOL AVAILABLE.]

Lin Yue looked at the message.

”Keeper Protocol?”

[CENTRALIZED POWER AUTHORITY AVAILABLE.]

She froze.

The Golden Space was offering her exactly what the impostor wanted.

Total control.

She could command every Guardian.

Every river.

Every forest.

Every system.

She could stop the Red Root immediately.

She could protect everyone.

All she had to do—

was take control.

Shen Rui looked at her.

”Lin Yue.”

She didn’t answer.

He understood.

”You’re considering it.”

”Yes.”

”Would it work?”

”For a while.”

”And afterward?”

She looked at Lumi.

”At some point, I’d become another Red Root.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”Then don’t.”

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

The golden light faded.

”No.”

The Keeper Protocol disappeared.

The Third Way

Lin Yue opened her notebook.

She flipped through pages.

Agriculture.

Water systems.

Energy.

Communication.

Marine ecology.

Decentralized networks.

She stopped.

A diagram.

The same structure she’d used for the valley.

Multiple independent nodes.

Connected.

But not controlled by one center.

Her eyes widened.

”That’s it.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”What?”

”We don’t fight the Red Root.”

”We don’t?”

”We change the network.”

The impostor stared at her.

”What are you doing?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Giving the Guardians a choice.”

The Guardian Network

Lin Yue placed her hand against the ground.

The Golden Space opened.

Not as one enormous command system.

As thousands of small connections.

The forest connected to the rivers.

The rivers connected to the wetlands.

The wetlands connected to the ocean.

The ocean connected to the rain.

The rain connected to the forests.

The farms connected to the soil.

The communities connected to knowledge.

Nothing controlled everything.

Everything communicated.

The ancient network began changing.

Red roots turned gold.

Then green.

Then blue.

Then—

they separated.

The Red Root screamed.

”No!”

Lin Yue continued.

”Ecology isn’t a machine.”

The roots broke apart.

”It’s a network.”

The ancient consciousness struggled.

”You will create chaos!”

”No.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Adaptive systems.”

The Guardians Awaken

One by one—

the Guardians responded.

Neri rose from the ocean.

The ancient sea Guardian opened its enormous eyes.

The river Guardian emerged.

The forest Guardian awakened.

The soil Guardian rose from beneath the earth.

The giant bee glowed.

The Seed Keeper squirrel appeared.

Even Lumi began waking.

Her golden eyes opened.

”Yue...”

Lin Yue hugged her.

”I’m here.”

Lumi smiled.

Then she flew upward.

A golden beam connected her to the other Guardians.

The network was complete.

But there was no central node.

No ruler.

No master.

Only cooperation.

The Impostor’s Choice

The silver-haired woman stood alone.

The red roots were gone.

Her body flickered.

For the first time, she looked tired.

Lin Yue approached.

”You don’t have to disappear.”

The woman stared at her.

”Why?”

”Because you have knowledge.”

”I have destroyed civilizations.”

”You also preserved their knowledge.”

Silence.

”You can help us.”

”Why would you trust me?”

Lin Yue smiled faintly.

”I don’t.”

The woman looked surprised.

Lin Yue continued:

”Trust isn’t automatic.”

She extended her hand.

”It is built.”

The woman stared at the hand.

For a long time—

she didn’t move.

Then she reached forward.

Her fingers touched Lin Yue’s.

The blackness in her eyes cracked.

A tiny golden light appeared.

The Name

The ancient consciousness spoke softly.

”I had a name.”

Lin Yue waited.

”I have forgotten it.”

Lumi flew toward her.

The little Guardian touched her forehead.

A flash of light appeared.

Then Lumi whispered:

”Eira.”

The woman froze.

”Eira.”

She repeated the name.

Tears appeared in her eyes.

”I remember.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then start there.”

The First Rule

Eira’s body changed.

The blackness faded.

Her silver hair remained.

Her eyes became pale gray.

She no longer looked like Lin Yue’s mother.

She looked like something older.

Something tired.

Something finally free.

The Golden Space displayed:

[ANCIENT CONSCIOUSNESS IDENTIFIED.]

[EIRA — ARCHIVIST OF THE FIRST WORLD.]

Lin Yue stared.

”Archivist.”

Eira nodded.

”I was created to remember.”

”Then remember.”

Lin Yue pointed toward the valley.

”And teach.”

Eira looked around.

At the forests.

The farms.

The ocean.

The people.

She smiled.

”For the first time...”

She looked at Lin Yue.

”...I think I can.”

Returning Home

The seal opened.

The expedition returned to the valley three days later.

Everyone had been waiting.

Her father was furious.

Her mother was furious.

Her grandmother was extremely furious.

The first thing Lin Yue heard was:

”WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?”

Lin Yue froze.

Shen Rui immediately stepped backward.

Coward.

Lin Yue smiled nervously.

”Exploring?”

Her grandmother marched toward her.

”You disappeared into a forbidden ecosystem!”

”Yes.”

”You fought an ancient consciousness!”

”Yes.”

”You nearly destroyed the Worldseed!”

”Technically—”

”No technicalities!”

Lin Yue lowered her head.

”Yes, Grandmother.”

Her grandmother pulled her into a hug.

Then hit her lightly on the shoulder.

Then hugged her again.

Lin Yue smiled.

”I missed you too.”

The New Teacher

Eira remained in the Golden Space.

She became the keeper of the ancient archives.

Unlike the Red Root—

she did not control information.

She taught it.

Ancient agriculture.

Old engineering.

Forgotten water systems.

Lost construction methods.

Historical mistakes.

Environmental failures.

And, most importantly—

why those failures happened.

The family eventually accepted her.

Mostly.

Her father remained suspicious.

Her grandmother interrogated her for two hours.

The children loved her.

The Guardians adored her.

And Lumi followed her everywhere.

One evening, Lin Yue watched the little Guardian sleeping beside Eira.

She smiled.

”You found your creator.”

Eira looked at Lumi.

”No.”

She gently touched Lumi’s head.

”She found me.”

A Small Farm Again

Weeks passed.

The crisis faded.

Life returned to normal.

Or what passed for normal in Lin Yue’s household.

The coastal farms expanded.

The marine academy opened.

The printing house published its first ecological manual.

The workshops produced improved farming tools.

The sanitation network expanded.

The seed bank became enormous.

The Golden Space developed new terraces.

And Lin Yue finally did something she had been promising for months.

She rested.

For one entire afternoon.

She sat beneath a tree.

No notebook.

No expedition.

No emergency.

No ancient Guardian.

No Red Root.

Nothing.

Shen Rui found her there.

He sat beside her.

”Enjoying retirement?”

”Don’t ruin it.”

He laughed.

They watched the sunset.

After a while, he said:

”You know.”

”What?”

”You never answered my question.”

Lin Yue turned.

”What question?”

”Why do you want to build all this?”

She thought about it.

Then smiled.

”Because I know what it’s like to lose everything.”

He became quiet.

”And because...”

She looked toward the farmhouse.

Her family was there.

Laughing.

Arguing.

Living.

”...I want to build something nobody has to lose.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”That sounds like a good reason.”

She looked at him.

”And you?”

”What about me?”

”Why are you still here?”

He looked at her.

Then smiled.

”I told you.”

”What?”

”I want to be.”

Lin Yue’s cheeks warmed.

She looked away.

”You’re troublesome.”

”I know.”

The Next Harvest

The following morning—

the entire valley celebrated.

The first harvest from the expanded coastal fields arrived.

Fresh vegetables.

Salt.

Fruit.

Grain.

Fish from carefully managed fisheries.

Seaweed.

Herbs.

Honey.

The marketplace overflowed.

Children ran between stalls.

Farmers laughed.

Merchants negotiated.

The workshops displayed new tools.

The printing house sold manuals.

The valley had become prosperous.

But Lin Yue noticed something more important.

People were teaching one another.

Farmers taught farmers.

Engineers taught apprentices.

Healers trained children.

Fishermen taught sustainable fishing.

The knowledge was spreading.

Not upward.

Outward.

Lin Yue smiled.

The Golden Space had once been almost empty.

Now it was becoming a world.

But the greatest thing it had produced wasn’t gold.

Or crops.

Or magical resources.

It was people who knew how to build.

One Last Message

That night, Lin Yue checked the Golden Space map.

Everything was stable.

The valley.

The forests.

The rivers.

The ocean.

The northern sanctuary.

All connected.

All independent.

Then—

a small symbol appeared beyond the known world.

A tiny golden star.

Lin Yue frowned.

”What is that?”

Eira appeared beside her.

She stared at the symbol.

Her expression changed.

”You shouldn’t be able to see that.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”Why?”

Eira whispered:

”Because that’s not part of this world.”

Lin Yue’s heart began beating faster.

”What is it?”

Eira looked toward the distant star.

”I don’t know.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Good.”

Eira sighed.

”You enjoy mysteries far too much.”

Lin Yue closed her notebook.

”Tomorrow.”

Eira looked horrified.

”Tomorrow?”

Shen Rui’s voice came from behind them.

”Absolutely not.”

Lumi cheered.

The squirrel grabbed its backpack.

Lin Yue laughed.

And somewhere beyond the edge of the Golden Space—

the mysterious golden star pulsed once.

Then twice.

As if—

something on the other side—

had just noticed her.

To be continued...
