Chapter 48: Chapter Forty-Six: The Price of Wanting

The potato harvest began at sunrise.

Which was, in Lin Yue’s opinion, an excellent way to deal with an interworld cosmic threat.

Ignore it.

Plant potatoes.

Eat breakfast.

Then panic responsibly.

She stood in the field with a basket balanced against her hip.

”Three baskets.”

The young farmer beside her counted.

”Four.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”Four?”

”Yes.”

He pointed proudly toward the rows.

”We changed the spacing.”

Lin Yue crouched and examined the plants.

The rows were slightly wider.

The soil around them had been mulched.

Water channels had been altered.

The result was obvious.

More potatoes.

Lin Yue stared.

”You improved the yield.”

The farmer grinned.

”You taught us to experiment.”

”I taught you to record experiments.”

”You did.”

He held up a notebook.

”We recorded everything.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Good.”

Then she noticed something.

The notebook wasn’t written in her handwriting.

Neither were the diagrams.

Someone else had copied them.

Then improved them.

Then taught another farmer.

Then another.

The knowledge had escaped its creator.

And that—

Lin Yue realized—

was exactly what she wanted.

The Legacy Tree

Inside the Golden Space, a new root had appeared.

It was thin.

Almost invisible.

But it connected several glowing points.

Each point represented a person.

Each connection represented knowledge passed from one person to another.

Lin Yue touched the root.

Immediately, the Golden Space displayed a series of records.

FARMER HAN → FARMER MEI

Soil-mulching technique

FARMER MEI → VILLAGE CHILDREN

Seed-saving method

VILLAGE CHILDREN → EASTERN VILLAGE

Rainwater collection design

EASTERN VILLAGE → NORTHERN FARM

Low-cost irrigation improvement

Lin Yue stared.

”They’re teaching each other.”

The older Lin Yue nodded.

”And every time they do, the Legacy network grows.”

Shen Rui looked around.

”So the Golden Space is becoming a reflection of the community.”

”Exactly.”

”Then what happens if the community makes a terrible decision?”

Lin Yue stopped smiling.

”That...”

She looked at the growing roots.

”...is what we need to find out.”

The First Test

Three days later, a message arrived from the western village.

Their grain stores were nearly empty.

Not because of crop failure.

Because a merchant had purchased most of the grain.

Lin Yue immediately called the village council.

The council explained.

”The merchant offered double the normal price.”

”And you sold?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

The village headman looked uncomfortable.

”We needed money.”

”For what?”

The answer was simple.

The village wanted a new road.

Lin Yue understood.

They had made a rational decision.

Sell grain at a high price.

Use the money to build infrastructure.

Except—

they had forgotten one variable.

Food.

The merchant had bought the grain to resell it elsewhere.

The village had accidentally exchanged immediate food security for future income.

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

This was exactly why she had wanted distributed decision-making.

But distributed decision-making did not mean perfect decision-making.

It meant people had the freedom to make mistakes.

Now she had to decide whether to intervene.

The older Lin Yue watched her carefully.

”What will you do?”

Lin Yue looked at the council.

”Nothing.”

Everyone stared.

The village headman looked alarmed.

”But we’re almost out of grain.”

”I know.”

”You can help us.”

”Yes.”

”Then why won’t you?”

”Because if I solve every mistake, you’ll never learn to solve one.”

The man lowered his head.

Lin Yue continued:

”But I won’t leave you helpless.”

She pointed toward the seed stores.

”We’ll provide emergency seed and food.”

Then toward the council.

”But you will design the solution.”

The headman looked surprised.

”You’re giving us another chance?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”No.”

”I’m giving you responsibility.”

The Emergency Grain Plan

The village council met immediately.

They reviewed their records.

They examined household reserves.

They contacted neighboring villages.

They negotiated with the merchant.

They created a temporary grain-sharing system.

The neighboring villages agreed to lend grain.

The western village would repay them after harvest.

But the council added another condition.

No village could sell below a minimum emergency reserve.

The policy was written down.

Then copied.

Then distributed.

Lin Yue didn’t create the rule.

The villagers did.

That mattered.

Because the next time a similar problem appeared—

they wouldn’t need her.

The First Hunger’s Whisper

That night, the merchant dreamed.

He stood inside a magnificent golden palace.

There were mountains of grain.

Silver coins.

Silk.

Jewels.

And a voice whispered:

You could own everything.

He reached toward the gold.

The voice continued.

You deserve it.

The merchant hesitated.

Then the palace changed.

He saw himself as the kingdom’s richest man.

Every market belonged to him.

Every road.

Every warehouse.

Every grain field.

Everyone needed him.

The voice whispered:

Imagine never being powerless again.

The merchant smiled.

”Yes.”

His dream shattered.

He woke sweating.

A single black seed lay beside his pillow.

The Seed

The merchant picked it up.

It was beautiful.

Perfectly smooth.

Black as polished obsidian.

A golden line ran through its center.

He heard the whisper again.

Plant me.

The merchant hesitated.

Then—

he did.

The Strange Crop

Within days, a black vine emerged.

It grew impossibly fast.

One day.

Two days.

Three.

Soon it covered half the merchant’s warehouse.

And wherever it grew—

grain appeared.

The merchant stared.

One seed produced an entire sack.

He laughed.

Then planted another.

And another.

Soon—

he had more grain than he could count.

He sold it.

The profits were enormous.

But something strange happened.

The more grain he produced—

the more he wanted.

The more money he earned—

the more dissatisfied he became.

He wanted every market.

Every warehouse.

Every road.

Every farm.

The vine continued growing.

The First Sign

Lin Yue noticed the problem when the Golden Space changed.

A black thread appeared among the Legacy roots.

It did not connect people.

It connected desires.

Greed.

Fear.

Envy.

Ambition.

Desperation.

The thread moved toward the western village.

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”The First Hunger has made contact.”

The older Lin Yue nodded.

”How?”

”We don’t know.”

”Then find out.”

The Investigation

Lin Yue refused to accuse anyone.

Instead, she sent a small investigation team.

Two farmers.

One accountant.

One healer.

One engineer.

One village representative.

And Shen Rui.

Lin Yue stayed behind.

Shen Rui raised an eyebrow.

”You’re not coming?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”You’re going to discover the problem.”

”We?”

”Yes.”

”You trust us?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”I’ve been trying to teach everyone to work without me.”

He nodded.

”Then we’d better not disappoint you.”

The Merchant’s Warehouse

The investigation team arrived two days later.

The warehouse was enormous.

And filled with grain.

Far more grain than the surrounding villages had produced.

The accountant checked the records.

”This isn’t possible.”

The engineer examined the grain.

”No mold.”

The healer tested a sample.

”Healthy.”

The farmers examined the sacks.

”Where did all this come from?”

The merchant smiled.

”I found a better method.”

The village representative frowned.

”What method?”

The merchant gestured toward the warehouse.

”Progress.”

The Black Vine

The engineer noticed something.

A black root beneath the warehouse floor.

He followed it.

Then stopped.

”Everyone...”

They turned.

The vine disappeared into the earth.

It pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Like a heartbeat.

The healer whispered:

”That isn’t a plant.”

The merchant’s smile disappeared.

The Offer

A voice filled the warehouse.

You want more.

The merchant stepped backward.

”No.”

You want security.

He swallowed.

”Yes.”

You want never to be poor again.

”Yes.”

The black vine spread.

Then take everything.

The merchant stared.

The village representative shouted:

”Don’t!”

But the merchant reached toward the vine.

The moment his fingers touched it—

the entire warehouse shook.

The Hunger Feeds

Outside, people began fighting.

Neighbors accused one another of stealing grain.

Farmers demanded higher prices.

Merchants hoarded supplies.

Workers demanded more wages.

The village council nearly collapsed.

Nobody understood why.

They simply wanted more.

More grain.

More money.

More security.

More influence.

More control.

Lin Yue’s warning became reality.

The First Hunger wasn’t attacking with soldiers.

It was amplifying existing desires.

Shen Rui Understands

Inside the warehouse, Shen Rui looked at the merchant.

”What did you want before the seed?”

The merchant hesitated.

”Security.”

”And now?”

The man stared at the grain.

”Everything.”

Shen Rui understood.

”The seed didn’t create your desire.”

”No.”

”It removed your limit.”

The merchant looked terrified.

Lin Yue’s Solution

When the investigation team returned, Lin Yue did not destroy the vine immediately.

Instead, she asked one question.

”What does it need?”

The healer answered:

”Desire.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”So starving it isn’t enough.”

Shen Rui understood.

”We have to break the feedback loop.”

”Exactly.”

The merchant was removed from the warehouse.

The grain was redistributed.

The villagers were brought together.

Everyone was shown exactly how much food existed.

No rumors.

No speculation.

No hidden reserves.

Transparent records.

The council created temporary distribution limits.

Not permanent control.

Just enough to stop panic.

The moment people understood there was enough food—

the fighting began to calm.

The black vine stopped growing.

The Lesson

Lin Yue gathered the village.

”The First Hunger feeds on uncertainty.”

A farmer asked:

”Then how do we defeat it?”

”Not by pretending uncertainty doesn’t exist.”

She pointed toward the grain records.

”By replacing rumors with information.”

She pointed toward the councils.

”Fear with cooperation.”

She pointed toward the seed banks.

”Scarcity with resilience.”

And finally—

she pointed toward the people.

”Desire with choice.”

The villagers listened.

One elderly woman asked:

”But what if we still want more?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Wanting more isn’t evil.”

She paused.

”Letting wanting control your decisions is the danger.”

The Merchant’s Choice

The merchant stood before everyone.

”I wanted security.”

Nobody spoke.

”I thought money would give it to me.”

He looked at the black vine.

”Then I discovered that no amount was enough.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”What will you do now?”

The merchant looked toward the village.

”I’ll repay the grain.”

”With interest?”

He laughed bitterly.

”With vegetables.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”That is acceptable.”

The Vine Dies

The black vine slowly withered.

But before disappearing—

it produced one seed.

Lin Yue picked it up carefully.

The Golden Space immediately reacted.

UNKNOWN ENTITY DETECTED.ORIGIN: FIRST HUNGER.FUNCTION: DESIRE AMPLIFICATION.

Lin Yue stared.

”It’s a weapon.”

The older Lin Yue shook her head.

”No.”

”A trap?”

”Closer.”

Lin Yue looked at the seed.

”A mirror.”

The older woman nodded.

”It shows people what they already want.”

”And makes it impossible to stop wanting.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue placed the seed inside a sealed container.

”We need to study it.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”Carefully.”

”Very carefully.”

The squirrel appeared behind them.

”Can I study it?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because you once ate experimental fertilizer.”

”It smelled like chocolate.”

”It absolutely did not.”

A New Institution

Lin Yue returned to the farm and created another department.

THE DESIRE STUDY ARCHIVE.

It wasn’t about suppressing people’s wishes.

It was about understanding them.

The archive recorded:

What people feared.

What they wanted.

What pressures influenced their choices.

How scarcity changed behavior.

How rumors spread.

How greed developed.

How communities responded to crises.

The purpose was simple.

If the First Hunger could exploit desire—

then people needed to understand desire.

Not fear it.

Shen Rui’s Concern

That evening, Shen Rui found Lin Yue alone.

”You’re planning something.”

She looked up.

”I always am.”

”This time is different.”

”How?”

”You’re thinking about studying the First Hunger.”

”Yes.”

”And you’re already thinking about how to use its weakness.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”You know me.”

”That’s why I’m worried.”

She put down her notebook.

”Shen Rui.”

”Yes?”

”I won’t fight it by becoming stronger than it.”

He nodded.

”I’ll fight it by becoming harder to manipulate.”

”And everyone else?”

”They need to learn the same.”

He smiled.

”Then perhaps we finally have a chance.”

The Quiet Confession

They walked beneath the World-Tree.

The silver leaves shimmered above them.

Shen Rui reached for her hand.

This time, she took it first.

”I don’t know what the future holds.”

”I know.”

”I don’t know whether we’ll win.”

”I know.”

”I don’t even know whether we’ll still have this farm.”

He squeezed her hand.

”But?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”But I know I want to build it with you.”

Shen Rui stopped.

She turned toward him.

He stared at her.

”That sounds dangerously close to a confession.”

Lin Yue’s cheeks turned pink.

”Maybe it is.”

He smiled.

”Then I should probably answer properly.”

He stepped closer.

”I want the same.”

For once—

there was no interruption.

No mysterious portal.

No ancient monster.

No magical warning.

Only the two of them beneath the moon.

Their foreheads touched.

And this time—

neither of them moved away.

Somewhere Beyond the World Road

Far away—

the First Hunger watched.

It had learned something.

Lin Yue could not be tempted by wealth.

She could not easily be tempted by power.

She had begun understanding fear.

She had learned to distribute knowledge.

She had accepted uncertainty.

But everyone had a desire.

Even Lin Yue.

The ancient presence searched deeper.

Past ambition.

Past greed.

Past security.

Past love.

And then—

it found something.

A desire Lin Yue had never spoken aloud.

A desire she barely admitted to herself.

The desire to bring back what she had lost.

Her old world.

Her old life.

Her old memories.

Her original home.

The First Hunger smiled.

Because now—

it knew exactly where to begin.

A golden message appeared in Lin Yue’s Golden Space.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO HOME?

Lin Yue froze.

The letters changed.

WE CAN GIVE YOU EVERYTHING YOU LOST.

Her breathing stopped.

Then another line appeared.

YOUR OLD LIFE IS WAITING.

Lin Yue stared at the words.

For the first time—

she had no clever answer.

Because this time—

the First Hunger hadn’t offered her wealth.

It hadn’t offered power.

It hadn’t offered immortality.

It had offered her home.

And that—

was the one thing she had never stopped wanting.
