Chapter 19: Chapter Seventeen: The Door Beneath the City

The door opened without a sound.

That was somehow worse.

Lin Yue stood at the top of the ancient staircase, staring into the darkness below.

Golden light spilled down the steps, revealing walls covered in symbols.

The deeper they went, the colder the air became.

Shen Rui walked beside her.

Han Zhen followed closely behind.

Moon padded silently at Lin Yue’s feet.

General, naturally, was perched on Shen Rui’s shoulder.

Lin Yue glanced at him.

”I still can’t believe you brought that rooster.”

Shen Rui sighed.

”I didn’t.”

General crowed.

”He brought himself.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”This is supposed to be a serious historical discovery.”

General crowed again.

”Apparently he disagrees.”

The Staircase

The staircase seemed endless.

One hundred steps.

Two hundred.

Three hundred.

The walls changed as they descended.

At first, the carvings showed farmers.

Then engineers.

Then cities.

Then enormous machines.

Lin Yue stopped at one mural.

It showed a vast network of rivers connected by canals.

Another showed fields arranged in terraces.

Another showed forests carefully managed alongside farmland.

Another showed schools.

Libraries.

Hospitals.

Workshops.

She stared.

”They understood sustainability.”

Han Zhen nodded.

”The Ancestors were not simply powerful.”

”They were organized.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue touched the carving.

”They built systems that lasted.”

Then she noticed something.

”They also made mistakes.”

Han Zhen’s expression darkened.

”Yes.”

The Forgotten Warning

Halfway down the staircase, they discovered an inscription.

Lin Yue translated it.

POWER WITHOUT LIMITS DESTROYS THE HAND THAT HOLDS IT.

Below it:

KNOWLEDGE WITHOUT WISDOM DESTROYS THE WORLD THAT RECEIVES IT.

Shen Rui looked at her.

”That sounds like a warning.”

”It is.”

Lin Yue continued down.

Then stopped.

A third sentence was carved beneath the others.

AND A KEEPER WHO FORGETS THIS WILL BECOME THE NEXT DESTROYER.

Nobody spoke.

Even General remained quiet.

For once.

The Underground City

The staircase finally ended.

Lin Yue stepped forward.

Her lantern was unnecessary.

The chamber illuminated itself.

She gasped.

Beneath the Northern City was another city.

Not ruins.

Not exactly.

A sleeping city.

Buildings stretched beneath the earth.

Bridges crossed enormous caverns.

Water flowed through transparent channels.

Mechanical platforms rested on rails.

Thousands of small lights glowed in the walls.

Shen Rui stared.

”How large is this place?”

Han Zhen answered quietly.

”No one knows.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then we have work to do.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”You say that too easily.”

”Would you prefer I panic?”

”Yes.”

”No.”

The Underground Farms

The first chamber contained rows of ancient growing beds.

Lin Yue immediately recognized the principle.

Controlled agriculture.

Water circulated through channels.

Nutrients were carefully managed.

Different crops grew under different conditions.

There were even systems for collecting plant waste.

Lin Yue examined the structures.

”This is an integrated agricultural system.”

Han Zhen looked confused.

”What does that mean?”

”Nothing is isolated.”

She pointed.

”Plant waste becomes compost.”

Then the water.

”Water is recycled.”

Then the crops.

”Different plants are grown according to their needs.”

Then the storage rooms.

”Food is preserved.”

She smiled.

”They were trying to minimize waste.”

A faint golden glow appeared around her hand.

The golden space responded.

[Ancient agricultural system detected.]

[Knowledge transfer available.]

Lin Yue frowned.

”Not yet.”

The system paused.

She added:

”We study it first.”

The golden light disappeared.

Shen Rui smiled.

”You’re teaching your magical space patience.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Someone has to.”

The Library Without Books

The next chamber was enormous.

But there were no books.

Instead, thousands of crystal panels covered the walls.

Han Zhen looked confused.

”What are those?”

Lin Yue approached one.

The moment she touched it—

light exploded across the chamber.

Images appeared.

Text.

Maps.

Diagrams.

Historical records.

Engineering plans.

Agricultural studies.

Medical information.

Manufacturing instructions.

Languages.

Mathematics.

Astronomy.

Ecology.

Architecture.

Everything.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

”This isn’t a library.”

”What is it?”

”A database.”

Shen Rui looked at the glowing walls.

”Is that good?”

”Very.”

Then Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”Very dangerous.”

Too Much Knowledge

The system offered access.

[Archive contains 87,214,306 records.]

Lin Yue stared.

”Eighty-seven million?”

Han Zhen nearly stumbled.

”What?”

”Records.”

”That’s impossible.”

”It isn’t.”

She looked around.

”This civilization recorded almost everything.”

Shen Rui asked:

”Can you memorize all of it?”

Lin Yue laughed.

”No.”

He looked relieved.

Then she added:

”But I can organize it.”

His relief disappeared.

”Of course.”

Lin Yue immediately began dividing the archive.

Agriculture.

Water.

Medicine.

Engineering.

Education.

Manufacturing.

Energy.

Ecology.

Governance.

Economics.

Culture.

History.

She refused to simply download everything.

Knowledge needed context.

She would learn it systematically.

Just as she had in her previous life.

One subject at a time.

One principle at a time.

One practical application at a time.

The First Truth

A historical record appeared automatically.

A woman’s voice filled the chamber.

”We believed knowledge would save us.”

Lin Yue recognized the voice from the agricultural institute.

The previous Keeper’s archive.

”We were wrong.”

Images appeared.

Factories.

Machines.

Cities.

Huge transportation networks.

Advanced agriculture.

Then war.

Pollution.

Collapsed rivers.

Abandoned farmland.

Empty cities.

Lin Yue’s face became serious.

The voice continued.

”We solved every problem by creating another.”

”We increased production.”

”So we needed more resources.”

”We built more machines.”

”So we needed more energy.”

”We created more energy.”

”So we needed more control.”

”And eventually...”

The image showed a vast central tower.

”...we built a civilization that could not survive without its Keeper.”

The recording ended.

Lin Yue whispered:

”That’s the answer.”

Why the Civilization Fell

The ancient civilization hadn’t been destroyed by one great enemy.

It had destroyed itself.

Not through a single disaster.

Through dependence.

Every generation had made life easier.

Then easier again.

Eventually, fewer people knew how anything worked.

Farmers stopped saving seeds.

Workers stopped repairing machines.

Engineers stopped teaching apprentices.

Communities depended on centralized systems.

The Keeper controlled those systems.

When the Keeper failed—

everything failed.

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

”That is what I must prevent.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”How?”

”Redundancy.”

”What?”

”Never let one system become the only system.”

She pointed toward the archive.

”Multiple schools.”

Toward the agricultural chambers.

”Multiple seed banks.”

Toward the workshops.

”Multiple manufacturing centers.”

Toward the farms.

”Local food production.”

Then she looked at him.

”And people who know how to repair things.”

He smiled.

”Now I understand.”

The Ancient Machine

A deep rumble shook the chamber.

Everyone turned.

At the center of the underground city stood an enormous machine.

It looked like a combination of a generator, clock, water turbine, and crystal structure.

Golden energy flowed through it.

Lin Yue approached slowly.

”What does it do?”

Han Zhen shook his head.

”We don’t know.”

The machine responded to Lin Yue’s presence.

A circular panel opened.

Inside was a single sentence.

CHOOSE YOUR FIRST GIFT.

Lin Yue frowned.

”Gift?”

Three symbols appeared.

A seed.

A gear.

A book.

Shen Rui looked at her.

”You have to choose.”

Lin Yue stared at the three.

Agriculture.

Manufacturing.

Knowledge.

All three were essential.

She thought carefully.

Then smiled.

”I choose the book.”

The gear dimmed.

The seed dimmed.

The book glowed.

Shen Rui looked surprised.

”Why?”

”Because if I choose the machine, I can build tools.”

She touched the symbol.

”If I choose the seed, I can improve agriculture.”

She smiled.

”But if I choose knowledge...”

The entire chamber brightened.

”...I can teach everyone else.”

The First Gift

The crystal panel opened.

A single book appeared.

Not enormous.

Not glowing.

Just a simple book.

Its cover was blank.

Lin Yue picked it up.

The pages were empty.

She frowned.

”That’s it?”

The system responded:

[The book records what the Keeper teaches.]

Lin Yue blinked.

”So it doesn’t contain knowledge.”

[Correct.]

”It stores knowledge.”

[Correct.]

”Then I have to write it.”

[Correct.]

Lin Yue smiled.

”I like this.”

Shen Rui looked confused.

”You like having more work?”

”No.”

She held up the book.

”I like that it can’t replace learning.”

The First Lesson

Lin Yue opened the first page.

She wrote:

WATER

Then beneath it:

Water is not merely a resource. It is a system.

She began writing.

Rainfall.

Watersheds.

Groundwater.

Floods.

Irrigation.

Storage.

Sanitation.

Conservation.

Every page filled itself as she wrote.

The magical book didn’t give her answers.

It organized her knowledge.

When she finished, the book glowed.

[Lesson One Recorded.]

Lin Yue smiled.

Then she turned the page.

SOIL

Another lesson.

SEEDS

Another.

FOOD

Another.

TOOLS

Another.

She realized what the gift truly was.

Not a magical encyclopedia.

A magical teaching archive.

A way to preserve practical knowledge so that future generations could understand it.

A Different Kind of Treasure

Lin Yue sat on the floor for hours.

She didn’t notice the time.

She wrote.

Shen Rui brought her food.

She ate while reading.

He brought tea.

She drank it.

He brought another blanket.

She barely noticed.

Eventually, he took the pen from her hand.

Lin Yue looked up.

”What are you doing?”

”Saving you from yourself.”

”I have more work.”

”You’ve been awake for almost a day.”

”I’ll sleep later.”

”No.”

He handed her the blanket.

”You’re sleeping now.”

Lin Yue stared at him.

”Are you ordering me?”

”Yes.”

She narrowed her eyes.

”You’re becoming very bossy.”

”You’ve said that before.”

”And I meant it.”

He smiled.

”Good.”

She sighed.

”Fine.”

She leaned against the wall.

Within minutes, she fell asleep.

Shen Rui quietly watched over her.

Moon curled beside her.

General settled on the opposite side.

The rooster was strangely quiet.

The Dream

Lin Yue dreamed.

She stood in a field.

The field was enormous.

There were no walls.

No buildings.

No roads.

Only soil beneath her feet.

A woman stood at the edge of the field.

She looked familiar.

Older.

Tired.

But kind.

Lin Yue knew immediately.

”The previous Keeper.”

The woman smiled.

”You came.”

Lin Yue looked around.

”Is this a dream?”

”Perhaps.”

”Are you dead?”

The woman laughed.

”Perhaps.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”You answer everything with perhaps.”

”It keeps people thinking.”

Lin Yue crossed her arms.

”Why did you choose me?”

The woman shook her head.

”I didn’t.”

”What?”

”The land chose you.”

”Why?”

”Because you know how to build.”

Lin Yue looked confused.

”I’ve only started.”

The woman smiled.

”No.”

She pointed toward Lin Yue’s hands.

”You build knowledge.”

Then toward her heart.

”You build trust.”

Then toward the distant fields.

”And now you are learning to build a future.”

The Final Warning

The previous Keeper’s expression became serious.

”But remember.”

Lin Yue waited.

”Building is not the same as controlling.”

”I know.”

”Do you?”

Lin Yue hesitated.

The woman continued.

”Your greatest temptation will not be wealth.”

”Nor power.”

”Nor immortality.”

”It will be efficiency.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Efficiency?”

”Yes.”

The woman smiled sadly.

”You will discover that controlling everything makes systems efficient.”

”And you will be tempted.”

”Because you will believe you can prevent mistakes.”

Lin Yue understood.

Central planning.

Centralized authority.

Centralized knowledge.

Everything would be easier if she controlled it.

But it would also become fragile.

”Then I won’t.”

The woman smiled.

”Good.”

The dream began fading.

”One last thing.”

”What?”

”Don’t forget to live.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”What?”

”You are building a civilization.”

The woman’s voice became distant.

”But you are still a young woman.”

”Eat.”

”Sleep.”

”Laugh.”

”Love.”

”Have a family.”

Lin Yue stared.

”Wait.”

The woman smiled.

”Civilization is meant to make life better.”

”Don’t become so busy building a better world that you forget to enjoy living in it.”

The dream disappeared.

Morning

Lin Yue woke to sunlight.

For several seconds, she didn’t remember where she was.

Then she noticed Shen Rui sitting nearby.

He was reading.

Moon slept against her feet.

General was snoring.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Morning.”

Shen Rui looked up.

”Morning.”

She stretched.

”How long did I sleep?”

”Seven hours.”

She froze.

”Seven?”

”Yes.”

”I have never slept seven hours in the middle of a crisis.”

”You needed it.”

She considered arguing.

Then decided against it.

”Thank you.”

He smiled.

”You’re welcome.”

She noticed something.

He was holding her notebook.

”You read my notes?”

”Only the part you left open.”

”What part?”

He hesitated.

”The section about family.”

Lin Yue’s face warmed.

”Oh.”

He looked down.

”You wrote that you wanted your future home to be noisy.”

She nodded.

”Children.”

”Animals.”

”Friends.”

”People arguing over dinner.”

”Someone stealing vegetables.”

She smiled.

”General.”

General snored.

Shen Rui laughed.

”You really want all that?”

Lin Yue looked toward the sleeping rooster.

Then toward the underground city.

”Yes.”

She smiled.

”I want the world we build to be worth living in.”

The Hidden Chamber Opens

A sound echoed through the underground city.

CLANK.

The enormous machine shifted.

A new passage opened.

At the end stood another door.

Unlike the previous ones—

this door was black.

No gold.

No symbols.

No writing.

Just darkness.

Moon immediately stood.

His fur rose.

Lin Yue’s smile disappeared.

”What is behind that?”

Han Zhen approached.

He looked frightened.

”Something the Ancestors feared.”

Lin Yue stared at him.

”You know what it is?”

”No.”

”Then why are you afraid?”

Han Zhen swallowed.

”Because every record we have says the same thing.”

”What?”

He pointed toward the black door.

”Never open it.”

Lin Yue looked at the door.

Then at the golden space.

The system was silent.

That frightened her more than anything.

She took one step forward.

Shen Rui caught her wrist.

”Lin Yue.”

She looked at him.

”We don’t have to open it today.”

She nodded.

”You’re right.”

For once, she stepped back.

The door remained closed.

But then—

something knocked from the other side.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Everyone froze.

General woke up.

He crowed.

The knocking stopped.

Lin Yue stared at the door.

Then a voice whispered from behind it.

Not ancient.

Not mechanical.

Not magical.

Human.

”Keeper...”

Lin Yue’s blood ran cold.

”If you can hear me...”

A pause.

”...the Ancestors did not tell you the whole truth.”

The black door began to glow.

And from somewhere deep beneath the earth—

something answered.

”They were not destroyed by themselves.”

Lin Yue slowly reached for Shen Rui’s hand.

This time, neither of them joked.

Because the history they had uncovered—

might have been a lie.
