Chapter 20: Chapter Eighteen: The Truth Behind the Black Door

The knocking came again.

Once.

Twice.

Then silence.

Lin Yue stood perfectly still.

Her fingers remained wrapped around Shen Rui’s hand.

Neither of them mentioned it.

Han Zhen slowly drew his sword.

Moon’s nine tails spread behind him, silver fur glowing faintly in the darkness.

Even General had stopped crowing.

That alone convinced Lin Yue that the situation was serious.

She stared at the black door.

”Who are you?”

For several heartbeats, there was no answer.

Then—

”Someone who remembers.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Remembers what?”

”The beginning.”

The golden lights along the underground chamber flickered.

Then the voice continued.

”And the betrayal.”

The Door Does Not Open

Lin Yue approached the black door.

Shen Rui tightened his grip on her hand.

”Careful.”

”I am.”

She stopped several steps away.

”Why are you behind the door?”

A quiet laugh came from the darkness.

”Because your ancestors were afraid of what I knew.”

Han Zhen stepped forward.

”You claim to know the Ancestors?”

”I knew their leaders.”

”Who are you?”

The voice paused.

”That is the wrong question.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Then what’s the right one?”

”Why did they lie?”

The chamber fell silent.

Lin Yue looked at Han Zhen.

He looked equally confused.

She turned back toward the door.

”Who lied?”

”Everyone.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”That isn’t helpful.”

Shen Rui murmured:

”She has a point.”

The voice laughed again.

”You sound like the old Keeper.”

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”Arden?”

”Yes.”

”What did Arden know?”

The answer came immediately.

”Everything.”

The First Crack

A thin golden line appeared across the black door.

Lin Yue stepped backward.

The line widened.

A tiny piece of the door broke away.

Behind it was not a room.

There was only darkness.

But within that darkness—

something moved.

Lin Yue couldn’t see its shape.

Only two pale eyes.

She raised her hand.

”Stop.”

The eyes disappeared.

The door became still.

Lin Yue took a breath.

”We aren’t opening this.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”You’re sure?”

”Yes.”

She looked at Han Zhen.

”We investigate first.”

Han Zhen nodded.

For once, everyone agreed.

The Records

Lin Yue returned to the archive.

If someone was claiming that the official history was false, she wanted evidence.

Not stories.

Evidence.

She searched the ancient records.

Agricultural collapse.

No.

Resource shortage.

No.

War.

No.

Natural disaster.

No.

Political conflict.

Nothing.

Every record repeated the same explanation:

The civilization collapsed because of centralized control under Keeper Arden.

Lin Yue frowned.

”That’s too clean.”

Shen Rui looked over her shoulder.

”What do you mean?”

”History isn’t usually this neat.”

She opened another record.

Then another.

All said the same thing.

Arden had centralized power.

Arden had abused the network.

Arden had caused the collapse.

Arden had been stopped.

The civilization had fallen.

Lin Yue stared.

”There are no dissenting records.”

Han Zhen nodded.

”Perhaps they were destroyed.”

”Maybe.”

She looked at the black door.

”Or maybe they were hidden.”

The Missing Years

Lin Yue searched the dates.

The official records covered almost every year.

Except one period.

Thirty-seven years.

She stared at the blank section.

”What happened here?”

Han Zhen leaned closer.

”There is no record.”

”Exactly.”

”Could it be lost?”

”Thirty-seven consecutive years?”

He shook his head.

”No.”

Lin Yue’s eyes narrowed.

”Someone removed them.”

She searched deeper.

The golden archive resisted.

A warning appeared.

[RESTRICTED HISTORY.]

Lin Yue frowned.

”Who restricted it?”

No answer.

She tried again.

[ACCESS DENIED.]

She looked toward the black door.

”Interesting.”

A Dangerous Experiment

Lin Yue returned to the underground engine.

She didn’t touch it.

Instead, she observed.

The Central Engine’s energy flowed through three major systems.

The golden network.

The ancient city.

And—

the black door.

Shen Rui noticed it too.

”The door is connected.”

”Yes.”

”How?”

Lin Yue studied the energy pattern.

”Not like the other systems.”

”Then how?”

She pointed.

”The energy is flowing into the door.”

Han Zhen’s face went pale.

”That means...”

”The door isn’t powered by the engine.”

Lin Yue whispered:

”The engine is feeding it.”

The Prison

Everyone stared at the black door.

Lin Yue finally understood.

”This isn’t a vault.”

Han Zhen slowly shook his head.

”No.”

”A laboratory?”

”No.”

”A control room?”

”No.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”Then what?”

Lin Yue looked at the ancient inscription.

She had misunderstood it.

The warning wasn’t:

Never open the door.

It was:

Never release what is behind the door.

She took a slow breath.

”It’s a prison.”

Silence.

Then the voice behind the door spoke.

”Very good, Keeper.”

Lin Yue’s blood ran cold.

The Prisoner

”You’re imprisoned.”

”Yes.”

”By whom?”

”Your Ancestors.”

”Why?”

A long silence.

Then:

”Because I refused to obey.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Obey what?”

”The Keeper.”

She looked toward Shen Rui.

The prisoner continued.

”Arden wanted control.”

”I refused to help him.”

”So he locked me away.”

Lin Yue stared at the door.

”If you’re telling the truth, why did the records say Arden was the only person responsible?”

”Because Arden wrote the records.”

The room went silent.

Arden’s Secret

Lin Yue’s mind raced.

If Arden had controlled the central archive—

he could have rewritten history.

He could have erased the rebellion.

He could have erased dissent.

He could have erased the people who opposed him.

He could have turned himself into the villain who had eventually been defeated.

That would be easier than admitting the truth.

Lin Yue whispered:

”He created his own history.”

”Yes.”

”And the Guardians believed it?”

”Some did.”

Han Zhen looked shaken.

”Then what happened to the others?”

The voice became quiet.

”They disappeared.”

The First Betrayal

The prisoner finally told them the story.

Arden had not begun as a tyrant.

He had been a brilliant Keeper.

He had expanded agriculture.

Improved water systems.

Built manufacturing centers.

Created hospitals.

Established schools.

He had done everything Lin Yue was doing.

The difference came later.

A famine struck the western provinces.

Arden responded by centralizing grain distribution.

Then a flood damaged several cities.

He centralized water control.

Then disease spread.

He centralized sanitation.

Every emergency justified another layer of control.

Eventually, every major system ran through the Keeper.

The people became dependent.

The Council warned him.

He ignored them.

Then one group attempted to shut down the Central Engine.

Arden called them traitors.

And that was when the war began.

The One Who Refused

The prisoner had been one of Arden’s engineers.

He had helped build the Central Engine.

But when Arden ordered him to weaponize it—

he refused.

Arden imprisoned him.

The engineer had remained beneath the city ever since.

Lin Yue stared at the door.

”You’ve been here for centuries?”

”I stopped counting.”

”Then how are you still alive?”

Silence.

Then:

”That is the question you should be asking.”

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

The golden space responded.

[Warning.]

[Life-sign detected.]

She stared.

”You’re alive.”

”Yes.”

”How?”

The prisoner laughed softly.

”Now you are asking the right questions.”

The Immortal Engineer

The prisoner explained that the Ancestors had developed a system capable of preserving life indefinitely.

Not true immortality.

A form of suspended biological maintenance.

The engineer’s body had been placed inside the chamber.

His metabolism had been slowed.

His aging nearly stopped.

But there was a cost.

He could not leave.

The system was designed to keep him alive—

and imprisoned.

Lin Yue looked horrified.

”That isn’t preservation.”

”No.”

”It’s torture.”

Silence.

Then:

”Yes.”

The Name

Lin Yue asked the question she had been avoiding.

”What is your name?”

For the first time, the voice sounded almost human.

”Huang Ming.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Huang Ming.”

She didn’t call him a prisoner again.

”Why are you contacting me now?”

”Because you activated the network.”

”And you need me.”

”No.”

She frowned.

”No?”

”I need you to understand.”

”Understand what?”

”The Central Engine has awakened.”

”Yes.”

”But the network isn’t the only thing it controls.”

Lin Yue’s stomach tightened.

”What else?”

Huang Ming answered:

”The weapon.”

The Weapon

The chamber became silent.

Shen Rui stepped closer.

”What weapon?”

Huang Ming answered:

”The Sky Furnace.”

Lin Yue looked at Han Zhen.

He looked horrified.

”You know that name?”

”Yes.”

”What is it?”

Han Zhen’s voice was barely a whisper.

”An ancient weapon.”

”How powerful?”

He looked at the ceiling.

”If activated...”

He swallowed.

”...it could burn an entire region.”

Lin Yue’s face became pale.

”Can the Third Council activate it?”

”No.”

”The royal court?”

”No.”

”Can I?”

Huang Ming answered:

”You have the authority.”

Lin Yue stepped backward.

”Then I don’t want it.”

The voice was silent.

Then:

”Good.”

The True Purpose of the Keeper

Huang Ming explained the final secret.

The Keeper’s authority was never meant to give unlimited control.

It was designed as a safeguard.

The Keeper could activate or deactivate ancient systems.

But the Keeper was never supposed to operate them alone.

There had always been a second principle:

Every major system required community consent.

Arden had removed that restriction.

He had rewritten the system.

That was why the Central Engine had been so dangerous.

Lin Yue understood.

The golden space wasn’t giving her absolute power.

It was restoring the original safeguards.

Her decision to distribute authority had triggered the ancient system’s approval.

She hadn’t merely passed a test.

She had repaired something.

The Fourth Choice

The Central Engine activated again.

A panel appeared.

Four options.

CENTRALIZE CONTROL DESTROY DISTRIBUTE

Lin Yue looked at them.

She smiled.

”That’s an easy choice.”

She touched:

DISTRIBUTE.

The machine responded.

[Command accepted.]

Across the underground city, ancient locks opened.

Not the black door.

Other systems.

Water networks.

Agricultural systems.

Libraries.

Workshops.

Medical archives.

The knowledge began flowing outward.

The ancient civilization was becoming accessible.

But the black door remained closed.

Lin Yue turned toward it.

”What about Huang Ming?”

The system displayed:

[Life-support system detected.]

[Release requires Keeper authorization.]

Shen Rui immediately said:

”Don’t do it yet.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”I agree.”

From behind the door came a quiet laugh.

”Wise.”

A New Problem

The moment the distribution system activated, the Northern City changed.

Every ancient settlement connected to the network received the signal.

Lights appeared across the mountains.

Then beyond them.

Then farther still.

But not all of the awakened cities responded peacefully.

Some activated defenses.

Others sealed their gates.

One city began broadcasting a warning.

Another activated its ancient machines.

And one—

far to the west—

sent a message.

The golden space translated it.

UNKNOWN KEEPER DETECTED.

Lin Yue frowned.

”Unknown Keeper?”

Huang Ming answered:

”There should only be one.”

”Then who are they?”

Silence.

Then:

”Someone who believes they should have inherited the world.”

The Rival

A map appeared.

A red mark flashed far beyond the western mountains.

Lin Yue stared.

”That’s another city.”

”Yes.”

”Is there another Golden Space?”

”No.”

”Another Keeper?”

Huang Ming was silent.

Then:

”Not a Keeper.”

”What, then?”

The answer came slowly.

”A King.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”A king?”

”The last surviving descendant of Arden.”

Everyone became silent.

Shen Rui looked at Lin Yue.

”What does he want?”

Huang Ming answered:

”Everything you have built.”

Lin Yue stared at the western horizon.

The farm.

The school.

The waterworks.

The printing presses.

The workshops.

Her family.

Her friends.

Her home.

Someone wanted all of it.

Lin Yue slowly smiled.

Not because she wasn’t afraid.

But because she finally understood what she was protecting.

She turned toward the staircase.

”We’re going home.”

Shen Rui nodded.

Han Zhen followed.

Moon’s nine tails shimmered.

General crowed.

Lin Yue stopped.

She looked at the rooster.

”You’re still banned from the bell.”

General crowed again.

”Fine.”

She sighed.

”You can come.”

The Beginning of the Next Battle

They emerged from the underground city at sunset.

The ancient Northern City was glowing.

For the first time in a thousand years, its roads were filled with people.

Engineers.

Farmers.

Teachers.

Guardians.

Families.

The forgotten city was coming alive again.

Lin Yue stood at the gate.

She looked toward the western mountains.

Far away, a single red light appeared.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

An army was moving.

Shen Rui stood beside her.

”Should we warn the royal court?”

”Yes.”

”Ask for soldiers?”

Lin Yue thought.

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because we need something more important.”

”What?”

She looked back at the city.

”People.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”You want to build another system.”

”Yes.”

”What kind?”

Lin Yue’s eyes brightened.

”A network of communities.”

She pointed toward the roads.

”Farmers.”

Then the schools.

”Teachers.”

Then the workshops.

”Engineers.”

Then the printing hall.

”Messengers.”

Then the ancient water systems.

”Shared resources.”

She smiled.

”If someone wants to conquer us...”

She looked toward the approaching red lights.

”...they’ll have to conquer everyone.”

Shen Rui laughed.

”That’s a very Lin Yue solution.”

She smiled.

”Thank you.”

Meanwhile...

Far to the west, a man stood atop a ruined tower.

He wore black and silver.

His eyes were fixed on the Northern City.

A messenger knelt behind him.

”The Central Engine has awakened.”

The man smiled.

”And the Keeper?”

”She chose distribution.”

He laughed.

”She made the same mistake.”

The messenger looked confused.

”What mistake?”

The man turned.

”Believing people can be trusted with power.”

He looked toward the distant golden lights.

”Prepare the army.”

”Yes, Your Majesty.”

The man smiled.

”And prepare the royal seal.”

The messenger hesitated.

”The royal seal?”

”Yes.”

He lifted an ancient ring.

The symbol of Arden appeared.

”Because tomorrow...”

His smile disappeared.

”...I will remind the world who truly owns the inheritance.”

And beneath the Northern City—

behind the black door—

Huang Ming whispered to himself:

”Arden’s bloodline survived.”

His eyes closed.

”Then the war has finally returned.”

The forgotten civilization had awakened.

And this time—

two people claimed the right to decide its future.
