Chapter 34: Chapter Thirty-Two: The Guardian Beneath the Waves

The sea stopped moving.

That was the first thing Lin Yue noticed.

The wind still blew.

The clouds still drifted.

The waves should have continued crashing against the shore.

Instead, the entire ocean became unnaturally still.

Not calm.

Still.

As if the sea itself were holding its breath.

Lin Yue stood at the shoreline with her notebook clutched against her chest.

Beside her, Shen Rui had one hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

Lumi was hiding behind Lin Yue’s leg.

Neri floated nervously in the air.

Lin Yue looked down at the little Guardian.

”You know what that thing is.”

Neri nodded.

”Is it dangerous?”

Neri hesitated.

Then shook its head.

Lin Yue frowned.

”That’s not very reassuring.”

Neri pointed toward the ocean.

Then toward itself.

Then made a swimming motion.

Lin Yue stared.

”You want us to follow it?”

Neri nodded enthusiastically.

Shen Rui immediately said:

”No.”

Lin Yue turned.

”You didn’t even think about it.”

”I did.”

”For how long?”

”About one second.”

”That isn’t thinking.”

”It was enough.”

Lumi nodded in agreement.

Lin Yue stared at both of them.

”Traitors.”

The Sleeping Giant

The enormous creature beneath the ocean moved again.

A golden eye opened.

Then another.

Its head slowly emerged from the water.

Lin Yue’s breath caught.

It was beautiful.

Terrifying.

Ancient.

Its body resembled a colossal sea dragon, but its scales were not ordinary.

They looked like overlapping pieces of pearl, coral, and polished stone.

Long fins extended from its back.

Golden patterns covered its enormous head.

Tiny forests of coral grew along its shell.

It wasn’t merely living in the ocean.

The ocean had grown around it.

Lin Yue whispered:

”How old?”

Her mother answered:

”Older than the Golden Space.”

Lin Yue turned sharply.

”That’s impossible.”

Her mother shook her head.

”No.”

She looked toward the creature.

”The Golden Space is a system.”

She paused.

”That creature is part of the original world.”

The First Ocean Guardian

The ancient creature lowered its head.

Its golden eye focused on Lin Yue.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a deep voice resonated through the water.

Not loud.

Not threatening.

Simply ancient.

”Keeper.”

Lin Yue swallowed.

”Yes.”

”You carry the Worldseed.”

”Yes.”

”You carry the memory.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”What memory?”

The creature’s eye brightened.

”The memory of what was lost.”

Lin Yue felt a strange pressure in her chest.

Images suddenly flashed through her mind.

A coastline.

Ancient forests.

Huge rivers.

Cities built beside the sea.

Children playing along beaches.

Farmers harvesting crops.

Ships sailing between islands.

Then—

red light.

Machines.

Polluted water.

Dead reefs.

Burning forests.

Empty fields.

Lin Yue staggered.

Shen Rui caught her arm.

”Lin Yue!”

She steadied herself.

”What was that?”

The Guardian answered.

”Memory.”

The Ancient Mistake

Lin Yue looked at her mother.

”You knew.”

Her mother shook her head.

”Not everything.”

The ancient Guardian spoke again.

”The first Keepers believed they could improve the world by controlling it.”

Lin Yue listened.

”They measured every river.”

”Counted every forest.”

”Mapped every animal.”

”Calculated every harvest.”

At first, it had worked.

Agriculture became more productive.

Cities grew.

Disease declined.

Trade expanded.

Knowledge spread.

But gradually—

the system became more important than the people it served.

”The world became a machine.”

Lin Yue’s expression darkened.

”And when something didn’t fit the machine?”

The Guardian’s eye dimmed.

”It was removed.”

Lin Yue’s Realization

Lin Yue looked toward the ocean.

”So the ancient civilization didn’t collapse because it lacked knowledge.”

”No,” her mother said.

”They collapsed because they believed knowledge gave them the right to control everything.”

Lin Yue slowly nodded.

That explained the Worldseed.

It wasn’t a weapon.

It wasn’t a treasure.

It wasn’t even really a source of power.

It was a lesson.

A warning.

The Golden Space existed to help people build.

Not to replace them.

Lin Yue looked at the enormous Guardian.

”Why did you sleep?”

The creature was silent.

Then:

”Because the world forgot how to listen.”

The Underwater Network

Neri suddenly darted forward.

A trail of blue light appeared beneath the waves.

Lin Yue followed it with her eyes.

The light traveled across the ocean.

Then—

red lights appeared.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

They spread beneath the water like roots.

Lin Yue’s stomach tightened.

”The Red Root.”

Her mother nodded.

”The underwater network survived.”

Shen Rui looked toward the horizon.

”Can it control the ocean?”

Her mother answered:

”Not yet.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”Not yet?”

”It needs a central node.”

”And where is that?”

Her mother pointed toward the ancient Guardian.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

”They’re using it.”

”No.”

Her mother shook her head.

”They’re trying to.”

The Guardian’s Chains

The ancient creature suddenly roared.

The ocean erupted.

Huge waves rose.

Beneath the water, red cables became visible.

They were wrapped around the creature’s body.

Not physically.

Magically.

They looked like glowing roots embedded into the surrounding water.

Lin Yue stared.

”They’re draining it.”

The Guardian’s voice echoed.

”They have been doing so for centuries.”

Lin Yue’s heart tightened.

”Centuries?”

”I resisted.”

”Why didn’t you destroy them?”

The creature’s eye became sad.

”I am the Guardian of the ocean.”

A pause.

”I cannot destroy the ocean to destroy those who harm it.”

Lin Yue understood immediately.

The Guardian’s greatest strength was also its greatest limitation.

It couldn’t simply unleash its full power.

Doing so would damage the very ecosystem it existed to protect.

Lin Yue whispered:

”So you need someone else.”

The Guardian looked at her.

”Yes.”

Lin Yue’s Plan

Lin Yue immediately opened her notebook.

Shen Rui stared.

”You’re writing again.”

”I need to think.”

”You’ve been thinking for approximately ten seconds.”

”That’s enough.”

Her mother smiled.

”Let her work.”

Lin Yue began drawing.

First—

the underwater network.

Then—

the Guardian.

Then—

the Red Root’s central node.

Then—

the surrounding ecosystem.

She drew circles.

Connections.

Flow paths.

Energy routes.

Water currents.

She stared at the page.

Then suddenly stopped.

”I know what they’re doing.”

Shen Rui leaned closer.

”What?”

”They aren’t controlling the Guardian.”

”Then what?”

”They’re using the Guardian as a power source.”

Her mother nodded.

”And if we disconnect the network...”

Lin Yue continued.

”...the Guardian should recover.”

”Should?”

Lin Yue winced.

”Nothing is guaranteed.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”That’s the Lin Yue I know.”

The Rescue Mission

The plan was simple.

Which meant it was probably dangerous.

Neri would guide them underwater.

The marine Guardians would protect the coral.

The river Guardian would control freshwater flow.

The ancient Guardian would remain still.

Lin Yue and Shen Rui would reach the network’s central junction.

They would disconnect it manually.

Her mother would monitor the Golden Space.

And Lumi—

”Absolutely not.”

Lumi froze.

Lin Yue pointed toward the shore.

”You stay here.”

Lumi’s ears dropped.

”You are not coming underwater.”

Lumi shook her head.

”You can’t breathe underwater.”

Lumi pointed at Neri.

”Neri can.”

Lin Yue folded her arms.

”Neri is a water Guardian.”

Lumi puffed her cheeks.

Shen Rui tried not to laugh.

”Don’t encourage her.”

Lumi looked at him.

Then stuck out her tongue.

Into the Sea

Lin Yue and Shen Rui entered the water.

Their equipment was simple.

Air containers.

Protective clothing.

Cutting tools.

Rope.

Waterproof lamps.

Communication signals.

Nothing magical unless necessary.

Neri led them.

The deeper they went, the darker the ocean became.

The Golden Space’s underwater ecosystem was enormous.

Fish moved around them.

Strange glowing plants swayed.

Coral formations rose like underwater forests.

Lin Yue couldn’t help staring.

Even during an emergency—

she was fascinated.

Shen Rui noticed.

”Focus.”

”I am focused.”

”You’re staring at fish.”

”Those are bioluminescent organisms.”

”They’re fish.”

”They’re interesting.”

”Lin Yue.”

”Fine.”

The Red Root

They finally reached the network.

Lin Yue stopped.

The sight was horrifying.

Thousands of red roots spread across the ocean floor.

They connected to ancient structures.

Some were wrapped around coral.

Others disappeared into trenches.

Some reached the ancient Guardian.

Lin Yue clenched her fists.

”This is ecological exploitation.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”What do we do?”

”Find the central node.”

They followed the largest root.

It led toward a massive underwater structure.

A ruined city.

Lin Yue stared.

An ancient city beneath the sea.

Buildings covered in coral.

Broken towers.

Collapsed bridges.

Statues.

And at the center—

a massive red sphere.

The Red Root’s control node.

The Lost City

Lin Yue slowly approached.

She recognized the architecture.

”The ancient civilization.”

Her mother spoke through the communication device.

”Yes.”

”Why is it underwater?”

Silence.

Then:

”The sea rose.”

Lin Yue stared.

”Climate change?”

”Partly.”

”What else?”

”Overexploitation.”

She looked at the ruins.

The lesson was painfully clear.

A civilization could have brilliant technology—

and still destroy itself.

The Control Room

Inside the central structure was a circular chamber.

Machines lined the walls.

Most were dead.

One remained active.

A red light pulsed.

Lin Yue approached the console.

A message appeared.

ROOT NETWORK CONTROL

STATUS: ACTIVE

PRIMARY RESOURCE: OCEAN GUARDIAN

SECONDARY RESOURCE: GLOBAL WATER SYSTEM

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”That’s why the Red Root wants the ocean.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”Water.”

”Exactly.”

Whoever controlled the ocean could influence rivers.

Rainfall.

Agriculture.

Fishing.

Trade.

Ports.

Water supplies.

The ocean wasn’t merely a resource.

It was civilization’s foundation.

The Difficult Choice

Lin Yue studied the controls.

There were two options.

DISCONNECT

TRANSFER AUTHORITY

She frowned.

”Why give us a choice?”

Her mother answered:

”Because the system still recognizes Keeper authority.”

Lin Yue stared at the screen.

”Transfer authority means what?”

”The network would connect to the Golden Space.”

”And disconnect?”

”Everything shuts down.”

Lin Yue considered it.

The easy answer was to destroy the system.

But destruction would also erase centuries of accumulated knowledge.

Water monitoring.

Marine records.

Navigation data.

Weather patterns.

Agricultural information.

Scientific archives.

She couldn’t simply destroy it.

”Transfer.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”Are you sure?”

”No.”

She smiled.

”But I’m willing to learn.”

The Choice of Trust

Lin Yue placed her hand on the console.

The Golden Space responded.

[TRANSFER AUTHORITY?]

She hesitated.

Then changed the command.

”Not to me.”

Shen Rui looked surprised.

”What?”

Lin Yue spoke clearly.

”Transfer the network to decentralized ecological governance.”

The system paused.

[DEFINE AUTHORITY.]

Lin Yue smiled.

”Communities.”

The system paused again.

[PROCESSING.]

Then:

[AUTHORITY DISTRIBUTION PROTOCOL ACCEPTED.]

The red light flickered.

Then—

turned gold.

The Ocean Awakens

The underwater roots began dissolving.

Not violently.

Slowly.

Like vines releasing a tree.

The ancient Guardian’s body began glowing.

The coral brightened.

Fish returned.

The water cleared.

Neri spun happily.

Lin Yue watched the transformation.

Then the Guardian moved.

Its enormous body rose through the water.

The entire ocean seemed to move with it.

Golden light spread across the sea.

Far away, reefs awakened.

Mangroves grew.

Whales surfaced.

Fish schools multiplied.

The Ocean Guardian had been freed.

The Gift

A single golden scale floated toward Lin Yue.

She caught it.

It was warm.

The system appeared.

[ANCIENT OCEAN GUARDIAN ACKNOWLEDGES KEEPER.]

Lin Yue stared.

”What does it do?”

The answer appeared.

[ENHANCES UNDERSTANDING OF MARINE ECOSYSTEMS.]

She blinked.

”Understanding?”

Not control.

Not power.

Understanding.

Lin Yue smiled.

”That is better.”

Back on Shore

They returned at sunset.

Lumi immediately launched herself at Lin Yue.

Lin Yue caught her.

”You were worried.”

Lumi nodded vigorously.

”You thought we wouldn’t come back?”

Lumi nodded again.

Lin Yue hugged her.

”We’re fine.”

Lumi sniffed.

Then bit Lin Yue’s sleeve.

Lin Yue stared.

”Was that necessary?”

Lumi shook her head.

Shen Rui laughed.

”She missed you.”

”That is not an excuse.”

”It is when you’re Lumi.”

Lumi proudly nodded.

The Family Dinner

That night, the family gathered around the table.

Her father listened to the entire story.

When Lin Yue finished, he sighed.

”So the ocean is safe.”

”For now.”

”The ancient network is decentralized.”

”Yes.”

”The Guardian is free.”

”Yes.”

”And you received another magical ability.”

Lin Yue nodded.

Her father looked at her.

”Anything else?”

She thought.

”There’s a ruined underwater city.”

Her father closed his eyes.

”Of course there is.”

Her stepmother, Madam Zhao, laughed.

Shen Rui looked at Lin Yue.

”You’re going to explore it.”

”Eventually.”

”Tomorrow?”

”No.”

He relaxed.

”Good.”

”Day after tomorrow.”

He groaned.

Everyone laughed.

A New Family Tradition

Her grandmother placed another bowl of vegetables on Lin Yue’s plate.

”Eat.”

”I am eating.”

”Not enough.”

Lin Yue sighed.

Her father added meat.

Her stepmother, Madam Zhao, added fruit.

Shen Rui added another bun.

Lin Yue stared at the growing mountain of food.

”I am not a livestock animal.”

Her grandmother replied:

”You’ve been working like one.”

Shen Rui coughed to hide his laughter.

Lin Yue pointed at him.

”Don’t.”

”I didn’t say anything.”

”Your face did.”

The Quiet Moment

Later, Lin Yue sat outside.

The ocean glittered beneath the moon.

Shen Rui joined her.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Finally, he said:

”You were afraid.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”Yes.”

”I’ve never heard you admit that.”

”I don’t like being afraid.”

”Neither do I.”

She smiled.

”But you still followed me.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

He looked at her.

”Because you were going.”

Lin Yue’s heart skipped.

”That isn’t an answer.”

”It is.”

She looked away.

”You’re becoming troublesome.”

He smiled.

”I learned from you.”

They sat together.

Not touching.

Not yet.

But close enough that neither felt the need to move away.

The New Map

Before going to sleep, Lin Yue returned to the Golden Space.

The map had changed again.

The valley glowed gold.

The forests glowed green.

The rivers glowed blue.

The ocean shimmered.

New connections appeared across the world.

But one area remained dark.

Far to the north.

A vast white region.

Lin Yue frowned.

”What is that?”

Her mother appeared behind her.

She looked at the map.

Her expression changed.

”That shouldn’t be there.”

”Why?”

”Because that region wasn’t part of the original Worldseed network.”

Lin Yue stared.

”What is it?”

Her mother shook her head.

”I don’t know.”

A new message appeared.

[UNREGISTERED ECOSYSTEM DETECTED.]

Then:

[WORLDSEED ORIGIN: UNKNOWN.]

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

”Origin?”

The Golden Space had never mentioned an origin before.

Another message appeared.

[RECOMMENDATION: INVESTIGATE.]

Lin Yue slowly smiled.

Her mother sighed.

”I know that expression.”

”What expression?”

”The one that means you’re about to start another project.”

Lin Yue closed the map.

”Not a project.”

”What then?”

She looked toward the northern mountains.

”An expedition.”

Her mother groaned.

Shen Rui, who had just entered the room, heard the last word.

”No.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”You haven’t even heard where we’re going.”

”I don’t need to.”

Lumi immediately cheered.

The squirrel appeared with a backpack.

Lin Yue stared.

”Where did you get that?”

The squirrel pointed proudly at itself.

Shen Rui sighed.

”We’re all doomed.”

Lin Yue laughed.

Outside, the ocean Guardian lifted its enormous head above the waves.

Far to the north—

beneath mountains no map had ever recorded—

something answered.

A single golden pulse traveled through the Golden Space.

Then another.

Lin Yue’s smile disappeared.

Whatever was waiting there—

had heard her.

And it was awake.
