Chapter 23: Chapter Twenty-One: The Farm That Learned to Breathe

Lin Yue stared at the message.

[UNKNOWN LIFEFORM DETECTED.]

[ORIGIN: GOLDEN SPACE.]

[STATUS: AWAKENING.]

For several seconds, she didn’t move.

Then she slowly looked around the golden space.

The fields were quiet.

The stream glittered beneath the sunlight.

The Moon Wheat swayed gently in the breeze.

Nothing appeared unusual.

Lin Yue narrowed her eyes.

”Define lifeform.”

The system remained silent.

She waited.

Nothing.

”That’s not an acceptable answer.”

Still nothing.

Lin Yue crossed her arms.

”You’ve been getting increasingly mysterious lately.”

The golden space shimmered.

A new message appeared.

[DEFINITION UNAVAILABLE.]

Lin Yue stared.

”You’re telling me you don’t know?”

[CORRECT.]

She rubbed her forehead.

”This is my space.”

[CORRECT.]

”And you’re supposed to be helping me manage it.”

[CORRECT.]

”Then why don’t you know what’s living inside it?”

Silence.

Lin Yue sighed.

”Fine.”

She picked up her notebook.

”Research project.”

Something Beneath the Soil

Lin Yue began by examining the ground.

The first discovery was ordinary.

Worms.

Hundreds of them.

Healthy soil worms.

She smiled.

”Good.”

Then she discovered fungi.

Mycorrhizal networks.

Beneficial bacteria.

Tiny insects.

Microorganisms.

All of them were interacting.

The soil wasn’t merely dirt.

It was an ecosystem.

Lin Yue became excited.

She carefully documented everything.

Soil moisture.

Organic matter.

Root density.

Microbial activity.

pH.

Nutrient availability.

Temperature.

She even began constructing small observation plots.

Shen Rui found her lying flat on the ground with a magnifying glass.

He stopped.

”What are you doing?”

”Studying.”

”You’ve been studying the same patch of soil for three hours.”

”Yes.”

He crouched beside her.

”Did you find anything?”

Lin Yue pointed proudly.

”Look.”

He looked.

There was a worm.

He blinked.

”That’s a worm.”

”It’s an ecosystem engineer.”

He looked at her.

”Of course it is.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”You’re learning.”

The Strange Pulse

The next morning, something changed.

Lin Yue felt it before she saw it.

A vibration.

Very faint.

Coming from beneath the farm.

She crouched and pressed her palm against the soil.

Thump.

She froze.

Thump.

Again.

She looked at Shen Rui.

”Did you feel that?”

He knelt.

”Yes.”

The ground pulsed beneath them.

Not like an earthquake.

It was rhythmic.

Almost like a heartbeat.

Thump.

Lin Yue’s expression became serious.

”That’s not natural.”

The golden space responded.

[BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY INCREASING.]

Lin Yue swallowed.

”Where?”

The system displayed a map.

A small golden point appeared.

Directly beneath the farm.

She stared.

”That’s impossible.”

Shen Rui looked at the map.

”How deep?”

Lin Yue estimated.

”Perhaps thirty meters.”

”Then we dig.”

”No.”

He looked at her.

”Why not?”

”Because if something is alive down there, digging blindly is a terrible idea.”

He nodded.

”Then how do we find it?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Carefully.”

The Investigation

They began with sound.

Lin Yue constructed simple listening tubes.

Then pressure sensors.

Then water-filled channels to detect vibration.

The results were strange.

The pulse wasn’t stationary.

It moved.

Slowly.

Through the soil.

Like roots.

But much larger.

Lin Yue marked its path.

”It isn’t under the farm.”

Shen Rui frowned.

”Then where?”

She pointed toward the northern fields.

”It moved.”

They followed the signal.

The pulse continued.

Then stopped.

Lin Yue waited.

Nothing.

She placed her palm against the ground.

A faint warmth spread through her hand.

The soil beneath her fingers brightened.

A tiny golden sprout emerged.

Lin Yue stared.

She hadn’t planted anything there.

The sprout grew.

One leaf.

Two.

Three.

Then a small white flower opened.

Shen Rui crouched beside her.

”What is that?”

Lin Yue examined it.

”I don’t know.”

The flower pulsed.

Thump.

The ground answered.

Thump.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

”They’re connected.”

The Living Network

Over the next week, the strange plants appeared everywhere.

Not weeds.

Not ordinary crops.

Small flowers.

Tiny grasses.

Moss.

Vines.

Trees.

Each appeared in places where the underground pulse traveled.

Lin Yue mapped them.

A pattern emerged.

They formed a network.

Roots connected beneath the soil.

Water moved through them.

Nutrients circulated.

Fungi connected their roots.

The entire farm had become one enormous biological system.

Lin Yue stared at her map.

”This isn’t a farm.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”You’ve said that before.”

”No.”

She shook her head.

”This time I mean it.”

She pointed toward the network.

”It’s an ecosystem.”

The Golden Space Evolves

The system activated.

[Ecosystem formation detected.]

[Biodiversity increasing.]

[Soil regeneration increasing.]

[Water retention increasing.]

[Carbon storage increasing.]

Then:

[Golden Space expansion: +15%.]

The horizon moved.

The hills became larger.

The stream widened.

A small pond formed.

New grasslands appeared.

Trees emerged.

Lin Yue stood speechless.

The golden space was no longer an empty magical warehouse.

It was becoming a world.

A self-sustaining one.

She whispered:

”You’re growing without me.”

The space shimmered.

[CORRECT.]

Lin Yue smiled.

”That might be the most beautiful thing you’ve ever done.”

The Pond

The new pond immediately attracted life.

Fish appeared.

Frogs.

Dragonflies.

Water beetles.

Birds arrived.

Lin Yue watched them carefully.

She didn’t interfere.

For once.

She simply observed.

Shen Rui joined her.

”This is peaceful.”

”Yes.”

”Does it need a name?”

Lin Yue thought.

”Moon Pond.”

He smiled.

”You name everything after the moon.”

”It works.”

”You named the wheat Moon Wheat.”

”Because it glows.”

”The pond doesn’t.”

”It might.”

Shen Rui looked concerned.

”You’re hoping?”

”I’m curious.”

”That is worse.”

The Little Dragon’s Visit

A flash of turquoise appeared.

Baby Dragon flew into the golden space.

He landed beside the pond.

”BOBO!”

Lin Yue blinked.

”I’m not Bobo.”

The dragon froze.

”Oh.”

He looked embarrassed.

”Sorry.”

Shen Rui laughed.

”Wrong magical world.”

Baby Dragon puffed his cheeks.

”I smelled something strange.”

Lin Yue crouched.

”What?”

He pointed toward the pond.

”Something is sleeping.”

Lin Yue immediately became serious.

”Where?”

Baby Dragon pointed beneath the water.

”There.”

The pond rippled.

A small golden bubble surfaced.

Then disappeared.

Lin Yue stared.

”That’s new.”

Baby Dragon nodded.

”Very new.”

The Creature Beneath the Pond

Lin Yue approached the water.

She didn’t touch it.

Instead, she observed.

The surface was perfectly still.

Then—

two tiny golden eyes appeared beneath the water.

Lin Yue froze.

Shen Rui reached for his sword.

Lin Yue raised a hand.

”Wait.”

The eyes blinked.

Then vanished.

Baby Dragon whispered:

”It’s cute.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”You think so?”

”Yes.”

”Based on what?”

”It blinked.”

She stared.

”That isn’t enough evidence.”

Baby Dragon tilted his head.

”It’s cute.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Fine.”

A New Resident

The creature finally emerged.

It was tiny.

About the size of a rabbit.

Its body resembled a small deer.

It had translucent ears.

Tiny antlers.

Golden fur.

And a glowing mark shaped like a seed on its forehead.

It looked at Lin Yue.

She looked at it.

It sneezed.

A tiny golden spark flew from its nose.

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

Shen Rui immediately stepped between them.

The creature sneezed again.

Another spark.

Baby Dragon giggled.

Lin Yue slowly lowered Shen Rui’s arm.

”It’s harmless.”

”How do you know?”

”It sneezed.”

”That doesn’t prove anything.”

She smiled.

”Neither does Baby Dragon’s argument.”

Baby Dragon looked offended.

”I’m very scientific.”

Lin Yue laughed.

The Name

The creature walked toward Lin Yue.

It sniffed her hand.

Then sat down.

Lin Yue crouched.

”What should we call you?”

The creature made a soft sound.

”Lumi.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”You’re Lumi?”

The creature nodded.

Shen Rui looked surprised.

”It named itself?”

”I think so.”

Lumi wagged its tail.

A tiny golden flower appeared beside it.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Lumi it is.”

The First Test

Lin Yue didn’t immediately trust Lumi.

Cute did not mean safe.

She created a simple observation schedule.

Diet.

Sleep.

Movement.

Interaction with plants.

Response to humans.

Response to magic.

Response to danger.

Lumi tolerated everything.

Except accounting.

The moment Lin Yue showed it a ledger—

Lumi ran away.

Shen Rui laughed so hard he nearly fell over.

Lin Yue stared after the creature.

”Traitor.”

The Family Meets Lumi

When Lin Yue brought Lumi home, her stepmother immediately fell in love.

”Oh!”

She picked up the tiny creature.

”Look at those ears!”

Lumi licked her hand.

Her stepmother melted.

”She’s adorable.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”She.”

Shen Rui raised an eyebrow.

”How do you know?”

Lin Yue paused.

”I don’t.”

Her stepmother laughed.

”Then perhaps Lumi is simply Lumi.”

That seemed to satisfy everyone.

Except General.

The rooster stared at Lumi.

Lumi stared at General.

General puffed his chest.

Lumi sneezed.

A golden spark landed on General’s tail.

General crowed in outrage and ran away.

Everyone burst into laughter.

Lin Yue covered her mouth.

”This is going to be a problem.”

The Farm Becomes a Home

Over the next month, the farm changed.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

The soil became darker.

The crops grew stronger.

The stream ran clearer.

The trees produced more fruit.

Birds nested nearby.

Bees arrived.

The fields required less fertilizer.

Water use decreased.

Harvests increased.

Lin Yue recorded every change.

She refused to assume the golden space was responsible for everything.

Some improvements came from better farming.

Some came from soil regeneration.

Some came from better irrigation.

Some came from biodiversity.

The magic merely accelerated what good systems could already accomplish.

That distinction mattered.

Because she wanted to understand—

not merely benefit.

The First Harvest

The Moon Wheat finally ripened.

Its stalks shimmered silver beneath the sunlight.

The villagers gathered.

Nobody spoke.

Lin Yue harvested the first grain herself.

She examined it.

Then measured moisture.

Checked for mold.

Tested the grain.

Compared it with ordinary wheat.

The results were astonishing.

Higher yield.

Better nutrition.

Greater drought tolerance.

And it could grow in poorer soil.

The farmers cheered.

Lin Yue smiled.

But she raised her hand.

”Don’t celebrate yet.”

Everyone became quiet.

”We need more trials.”

A farmer laughed.

”Of course.”

She smiled.

”Three seasons.”

”Three?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”To see whether the results remain stable.”

The farmer shook his head.

”You really won’t let us have fun.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”Not until the data says we can.”

The New Bakery

The first Moon Wheat harvest changed the village bakery.

The flour produced soft, fragrant bread.

Children loved it.

Adults loved it even more.

The bakery quickly became famous.

Merchants arrived from neighboring towns.

Orders increased.

The bakery hired workers.

Then another bakery opened.

Then a small mill.

Then a grain cooperative.

Lin Yue watched the process.

She didn’t own them.

She helped establish the systems.

The farmers owned the cooperative.

The bakers owned their bakery.

The mill belonged to a local partnership.

Everyone kept records.

Profits were shared.

Expenses were tracked.

And taxes were calculated properly.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Now that’s development.”

Shen Rui’s Observation

One evening, Shen Rui found her reviewing account books.

”You’re smiling.”

”I am?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”You’ve created a successful grain industry.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”No.”

”What?”

”They created it.”

He smiled.

”You’re getting better at this.”

”At what?”

”Letting other people take credit.”

Lin Yue considered that.

”I suppose that’s part of building.”

He nodded.

”Exactly.”

She looked at him.

”You’re becoming wise.”

”Don’t tell anyone.”

”Why?”

”It will ruin my reputation.”

She laughed.

The Letter

Peace lasted six weeks.

Then a royal messenger arrived.

He carried a sealed letter.

Lin Yue opened it.

The message was from Li An Sheng Huang.

Not a threat.

Not an order.

An offer.

Keeper Lin Yue,

I propose a meeting.

No soldiers.

No weapons.

Only conversation.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

There are truths about Arden that neither Huang Ming nor the ancient records have told you.

Lin Yue read it twice.

Shen Rui looked at her.

”Do you trust him?”

”No.”

”Will you meet him?”

Lin Yue looked toward the growing fields.

Then at the golden space.

Then at Lumi sleeping beneath the table.

Finally, she smiled.

”Yes.”

Shen Rui sighed.

”Why?”

”Because information is valuable.”

”You could be walking into a trap.”

”I know.”

”And you’re still going?”

”Yes.”

He shook his head.

”You really are impossible.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”You’re coming.”

He paused.

”I was hoping you’d say that.”

Beneath the Farm

That night, everyone slept.

Everyone except Lumi.

The tiny golden creature quietly left the house.

It crossed the garden.

Walked through the Moon Wheat.

Stopped beside the old well.

Then looked down.

Its golden eyes brightened.

Far beneath the earth—

something answered.

Thump.

Lumi’s ears lifted.

Thump.

The soil cracked.

A thin golden root emerged.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

They spread beneath the farm.

Toward the fields.

Toward the pond.

Toward the village.

Toward the ancient underground city.

And finally—

toward the black door.

Behind that door, Huang Ming suddenly woke.

He looked toward the darkness.

For the first time in centuries—

he smiled.

”She’s here.”

A voice answered from somewhere deeper.

”Who?”

Huang Ming whispered:

”The first Guardian.”

The black door trembled.

And beneath Lin Yue’s farm—

something ancient opened its eyes.

Not a monster.

Not a weapon.

Not a prisoner.

A protector.

One that had been waiting—

for the right Keeper to come home.
