Chapter 16: Chapter Fourteen: The Mountain River Project

The next morning, Lin Yue discovered that mountains were much easier to admire than to manage.

She stood at the edge of the newly expanded valley, staring upward.

The mountains were enormous.

Snow-covered peaks rose beyond the forest.

Several narrow streams descended from the slopes and eventually joined into one powerful river.

The river passed through the valley before disappearing beyond the eastern boundary.

Lin Yue unfolded her map.

Then folded it again.

Then unfolded it.

She stared at it.

Shen Rui stood beside her.

”Problem?”

”Several.”

”How many?”

”Enough.”

He looked toward the mountains.

”What does the golden space want?”

Lin Yue pointed.

”A water-management system.”

He smiled.

”That sounds simple.”

She slowly turned toward him.

”You’re not allowed to say that again.”

”Why?”

”Because every time someone says something is simple, I end up spending three months building it.”

He laughed.

”That is fair.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Water is never simple.”

The First Survey

Lin Yue refused to start construction immediately.

Instead, she assembled a survey team.

The Guardians.

Several farmers.

Two carpenters.

The blacksmith.

Shen Rui.

And, unfortunately, General.

”Why is the rooster coming?”

Qiao’er looked offended.

”General insists.”

Lin Yue stared at the rooster.

General stared back.

”You’re not trained.”

General crowed.

”That isn’t a qualification.”

He crowed again.

Shen Rui nodded solemnly.

”He disagrees.”

Lin Yue rubbed her forehead.

”Fine.”

The group climbed toward the mountain foothills.

Lin Yue carried notebooks, measuring tools, rope, stakes, and a simple level.

She wanted to understand the terrain before touching it.

The first rule was obvious:

Water flows downhill.

The second was more complicated:

Water does not care about human plans.

Reading the Mountain

Lin Yue spent hours examining the landscape.

She looked at:

the slope,

rock formations,

soil depth,

vegetation,

stream width,

erosion,

water speed,

and natural drainage paths.

She marked everything on the map.

Shen Rui watched.

”You can really understand all that from looking?”

”Not from looking.”

She crouched beside the stream.

”From measuring.”

She checked the flow.

”Water tells you what the land is doing.”

He smiled.

”You sound like a teacher.”

”I am a teacher.”

”You’ve been teaching everyone.”

Lin Yue looked embarrassed.

”Perhaps.”

They continued.

By noon, they had discovered something important.

The main river flooded during heavy rain.

The valley below was relatively flat.

The natural elevation difference was enough to redirect some water toward storage ponds.

Lin Yue immediately became interested.

”We can slow the floodwater.”

”How?”

”Several small structures instead of one giant one.”

Shen Rui nodded.

”Why?”

”Because if one fails, everything doesn’t fail.”

He smiled.

”That sounds like your philosophy.”

”It is.”

The Plan

Back at the farm, Lin Yue covered an entire table with maps.

Everyone gathered around.

She drew several lines.

”This is the mountain stream.”

”This is the floodplain.”

”This is the farm.”

”This is the village.”

Then she added:

Catchment ponds.

Diversion channels.

Terraced slopes.

Check dams.

Overflow channels.

Storage reservoirs.

Uncle Zhao stared.

”That’s a lot of digging.”

”Yes.”

”Who’s doing it?”

Lin Yue looked at the workers.

Everyone immediately looked at someone else.

Then General crowed.

Lin Yue pointed.

”Not him.”

The workers laughed.

The Principle of Many Small Things

Lin Yue explained the plan.

They would not attempt to control the entire river.

They would work with it.

Small stone structures would slow runoff.

Vegetation would stabilize the slopes.

Ponds would store water.

Overflow channels would prevent catastrophic flooding.

Terraces would reduce erosion.

Water could then be released gradually toward the fields.

The system would serve several purposes:

irrigation,

flood reduction,

soil conservation,

fish habitat,

and emergency water storage.

The Guardians listened carefully.

Han Zhen finally spoke.

”Your system resembles the old methods.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Good ideas tend to survive.”

”But you’ve changed the design.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because our land is different.”

Han Zhen nodded slowly.

”Adaptation.”

”Exactly.”

The First Dam

The first structure was small.

A low stone check dam across a narrow seasonal channel.

The workers placed stones carefully.

The blacksmith prepared metal tools.

The carpenters built temporary supports.

Lin Yue inspected everything.

”No tall wall.”

The workers looked at her.

”Why?”

”If the water overtops it, we want controlled overflow.”

She pointed.

”This is not a fortress.”

”It is a speed bump.”

Uncle Zhao laughed.

”A stone speed bump for water.”

”Exactly.”

They finished by sunset.

That night, everyone waited.

Nothing happened.

Then the rain came.

The Storm

The storm began after midnight.

Rain hammered the roofs.

Thunder rolled across the mountains.

Lin Yue woke immediately.

She ran outside.

Shen Rui was already there.

”The river is rising.”

”How quickly?”

”Fast.”

Lin Yue grabbed her cloak.

”Wake everyone.”

Within minutes, the settlement was awake.

The rain became heavier.

Water rushed down the mountain.

The new check dam filled.

For several terrifying moments, Lin Yue watched.

Then—

the water slowed.

Instead of racing directly toward the valley—

it spread into the channel.

Sediment settled.

The flow decreased.

Lin Yue stared.

”It works.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”You doubted yourself?”

”Always.”

”Why?”

”Because confidence isn’t evidence.”

He laughed softly.

”You’re impossible.”

The Overflow

Then something unexpected happened.

One of the diversion channels began filling too quickly.

Lin Yue’s expression changed.

”That’s not supposed to happen.”

She grabbed a lantern.

Shen Rui followed.

They ran through the rain.

The channel was overflowing toward the wrong side.

Lin Yue examined it.

”The slope is wrong.”

”What do we do?”

”Open the emergency overflow.”

They found the gate.

It was jammed.

Shen Rui pulled.

Nothing.

Lin Yue joined him.

Still nothing.

Then—

General appeared.

He pecked the wooden latch.

It snapped.

The gate opened.

Water rushed through.

Everyone stared at the rooster.

General crowed proudly.

Lin Yue slowly pointed at him.

”You.”

General puffed his chest.

”You actually helped.”

General crowed again.

Qiao’er shouted from behind them:

”GENERAL SAVED THE FARM!”

Lin Yue sighed.

”He’s never going to become humble now.”

Shen Rui laughed.

”Too late.”

The Morning After

At sunrise, the storm ended.

The valley had survived.

There was damage.

Several paths were washed out.

One fence collapsed.

A storage shed lost part of its roof.

But the fields remained intact.

The village was safe.

The new water system had slowed the flood.

Lin Yue walked along the riverbank.

Mud covered her boots.

Her hair was soaked.

She looked exhausted.

But she was smiling.

Han Zhen approached.

”You succeeded.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”We got lucky.”

”No.”

He pointed toward the structures.

”You planned.”

She looked at the valley.

”We still have much to improve.”

”Of course.”

He smiled.

”That is why the inheritance chose you.”

A New Kind of Harvest

The flood left behind something unexpected.

Rich sediment.

The fields near the lower valley had received a thin layer of fertile material.

Lin Yue tested the soil.

She smiled.

”This is useful.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”You’re happy about mud.”

”Good mud.”

”That distinction matters?”

”Very much.”

She explained that controlled sediment deposition could improve soil fertility.

But uncontrolled sediment could bury crops and clog waterways.

The key was management.

The workers began collecting useful sediment from settling areas.

Nothing was wasted.

The farm was learning to treat waste as a resource.

The Fish Pond

The largest storage pond had become home to several small fish.

The children discovered them first.

”Fish!”

Qiao’er came running.

Lin Yue inspected the pond.

The water was clean enough.

The habitat was stable.

She decided to leave it alone.

”No catching them yet.”

The children groaned.

”Why?”

”They’re part of the ecosystem.”

”What does that mean?”

”They help keep the pond healthy.”

The children looked at the fish differently.

Then one boy asked:

”Can we name them?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Yes.”

Within an hour, the pond had fifty-seven named fish.

Lin Yue decided not to ask how they had counted them.

The Waterworks Become a Business

The success attracted attention.

Farmers from neighboring villages came to see the system.

They asked questions.

”How much did it cost?”

”How long did it take?”

”What stone did you use?”

”Where should the channels go?”

”How do we protect our fields?”

Lin Yue answered.

Then she realized something.

They didn’t need her to build everything.

They needed training.

So she created a new program.

Water Management Apprenticeship.

Young farmers could spend several months learning:

surveying,

basic drainage,

irrigation,

erosion control,

pond construction,

maintenance,

record-keeping,

and emergency planning.

The graduates would return home.

Then teach others.

Shen Rui looked at the enrollment list.

”There are already forty people.”

Lin Yue stared.

”Forty?”

”Forty-three.”

She sighed.

”We need another classroom.”

The Engineering Room

The school expanded.

One room became an engineering classroom.

It contained:

maps,

models,

measuring instruments,

wooden water channels,

small dams,

soil samples,

and miniature fields.

Children could experiment.

Move water.

Build structures.

Observe failures.

Try again.

Lin Yue loved it.

”Let them break things here.”

A teacher looked horrified.

”Break them?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because mistakes made on a model are cheaper than mistakes made on a mountain.”

The teacher slowly nodded.

”That makes sense.”

The Prince Returns

Three weeks later, Prince Zhao Mingyuan returned.

This time, he brought engineers.

Six of them.

They looked skeptical.

One examined the water channels.

Another studied the maps.

A third inspected the pond.

The senior engineer finally looked at Lin Yue.

”Who taught you hydraulic engineering?”

Lin Yue hesitated.

”I studied it.”

”Where?”

She thought about her previous life.

Books.

University.

Fieldwork.

Years of reading.

Then she answered simply:

”Many places.”

He frowned.

That wasn’t an answer.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Would you like to inspect the design?”

He nodded.

They spent the entire afternoon examining the system.

By evening, the senior engineer looked impressed.

”You understand the principles.”

”I understand some principles.”

”Some?”

”There is always more to learn.”

The engineer smiled.

”Good answer.”

The Royal Proposal

Prince Zhao Mingyuan brought another proposal.

The kingdom wanted to establish a formal network of agricultural and engineering schools.

Lin Yue’s farm would become the first demonstration center.

She stared at the document.

”This is becoming much larger than I expected.”

The prince smiled.

”You started it.”

”I started a farm.”

”You started a model.”

She looked at him.

”I don’t want people worshipping the model.”

”Then teach them to improve it.”

She smiled.

”That I can agree to.”

Shen Rui’s Jealous Moment

Later that evening, Lin Yue and the prince discussed maps.

They stood close together over the table.

Shen Rui entered.

He stopped.

He stared.

Lin Yue didn’t notice.

The prince did.

A small smile appeared on his face.

”General Shen.”

”Yes?”

”You seem troubled.”

”No.”

”You’re staring.”

”I’m thinking.”

”About the map?”

”Yes.”

The prince glanced at Lin Yue.

”Interesting.”

Shen Rui’s expression remained blank.

Lin Yue finally looked up.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

The prince smiled.

”I believe I should leave you two to your discussion.”

He walked away.

Lin Yue looked confused.

”What was that about?”

Shen Rui sighed.

”Nothing.”

”You’re acting strange.”

”Am I?”

”Yes.”

He looked at the map.

”I was simply wondering whether the western canal should be wider.”

Lin Yue stared.

”You’re jealous.”

He nearly dropped the map.

”What?”

She smiled.

”You are.”

”No.”

”You are.”

”I’m not.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”You’re terrible at lying too.”

He sighed.

”Perhaps.”

She smiled softly.

”You don’t have to be jealous.”

He looked at her.

”I know.”

There was a pause.

”Besides,” she added, ”I trust you.”

His expression softened.

”Good.”

The Golden Space Expands

That night, Lin Yue entered the golden space.

The progress meter had changed.

[Development: 45%.]

She stared.

The entire horizon had expanded.

The mountains were no longer distant.

A road now connected the valley to the settlement.

The river system had become larger.

New forest appeared.

A broad meadow stretched toward the west.

Then the system displayed:

[Water System Established.]

[Environmental Stability Increased.]

[Agricultural Resilience Increased.]

[Population Capacity Increased.]

Lin Yue smiled.

Then another line appeared.

[New infrastructure category unlocked.]

She waited.

[Manufacturing Systems.]

Lin Yue’s eyes widened.

The golden space had given her agriculture.

Then water.

Now—

manufacturing.

She immediately opened the new section.

Blueprints appeared.

Improved plows.

Seed drills.

Hand pumps.

Wheelbarrows.

Water wheels.

Simple presses.

Grain-processing equipment.

Improved looms.

Kilns.

Small machine tools.

Lin Yue stared.

There were hundreds.

Maybe thousands.

But then she noticed something.

[Warning.]

[Manufacturing development requires energy infrastructure.]

She looked toward the mountains.

Then toward the river.

A slow smile appeared.

”Water wheel.”

Shen Rui appeared behind her.

He looked at the plans.

”You’ve thought of something.”

”Yes.”

”What?”

Lin Yue pointed toward the river.

”We’re going to make the river work for us.”

He sighed.

”Another project.”

She smiled.

”It’s a small one.”

He stared at her.

She laughed.

”Fine. A moderately large one.”

The Hidden Message

Before leaving the golden space, Lin Yue noticed a small symbol at the bottom of the blueprint.

She touched it.

The archive opened.

A single ancient record appeared.

Not a blueprint.

Not an instruction.

A message.

TO THE KEEPER WHO REACHES THE FIFTH STAGE:

If you have reached this point, you have learned to cultivate the land.

You have learned to manage water.

You have learned to preserve knowledge.

Now you must learn to create without becoming dependent upon what you create.

Lin Yue frowned.

Another line appeared.

The greatest danger of civilization is not scarcity.

It is dependence.

Then:

Build systems that can survive without you.

Lin Yue stood silently.

That was harder than building a farm.

Much harder.

Because now she had to teach others.

Train successors.

Create institutions.

Write procedures.

Preserve knowledge.

Make sure everything worked even when she wasn’t there.

She slowly smiled.

”That’s the real test.”

A New Dream

The following morning, Lin Yue gathered everyone.

She stood before the school.

”The farm is changing.”

The workers listened.

”So are we.”

She looked toward the workshop.

”We will build better tools.”

Toward the school.

”Teach more people.”

Toward the mountains.

”Manage water.”

Toward the fields.

”Improve agriculture.”

Toward the printing house.

”Preserve knowledge.”

Then she looked at her family.

”And build a place where all of this can continue without depending on one person.”

Everyone was silent.

Uncle Zhao smiled.

”That sounds like a kingdom.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”No.”

She looked around at the muddy paths, crooked houses, noisy children, stubborn chickens, and hardworking farmers.

”A home.”

And Somewhere in the North...

Far beyond the mountains, another group watched.

The Third Council had failed.

But they had not given up.

A messenger knelt before a darkened chamber.

”The Keeper has established waterworks.”

A voice answered:

”How advanced?”

”Advanced enough to withstand the recent flood.”

Silence.

”And the royal prince?”

”He supports her.”

Another silence.

Then:

”Then we cannot take the inheritance by force.”

The messenger lowered his head.

”What will we do?”

The voice answered:

”Something simpler.”

”What?”

”Offer her something she cannot refuse.”

The Letter

That evening, a messenger arrived at the farm.

He carried a sealed letter.

Lin Yue opened it.

The seal was unfamiliar.

Inside was a single sentence.

COME TO THE NORTHERN CITY.

Below it was another line.

WE WILL SHOW YOU WHAT THE PREVIOUS KEEPER LEFT BEHIND.

Lin Yue read it twice.

Her expression became serious.

Shen Rui stood beside her.

”Trap?”

”Probably.”

”Then don’t go.”

Lin Yue looked toward the mountains.

”Maybe.”

He frowned.

”Maybe?”

She smiled.

”But if they’re telling the truth...”

She folded the letter.

”...there may be knowledge there that could save thousands of people.”

Shen Rui sighed.

”I knew you were going to say that.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”You don’t have to come.”

He stared at her.

”Of course I’m coming.”

She smiled.

”I thought so.”

Moon chirped.

General crowed.

Lin Yue looked toward both animals.

”No.”

General crowed again.

”Absolutely not.”

Moon wagged his tail.

Lin Yue pointed at him.

”You too.”

The fox looked innocent.

Shen Rui laughed.

”Your family appears to disagree.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Fine.”

She looked toward the northern mountains.

”Tomorrow, we go to the ancient city.”

Far away, beneath the ruined towers, golden lights began to awaken.

And for the first time—

the ancient city opened all of its gates.
