Chapter 40: Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Seed That Should Not Grow

The seedling was barely larger than Lin Yue’s palm.

Yet every Worldseed in the sky had responded to it.

Golden stars filled the darkness above the valley.

Hundreds.

Perhaps thousands.

They shimmered like an enormous celestial garden.

Nobody spoke.

Then the little seedling grew another leaf.

Whoosh.

A wave of golden energy spread across the ground.

Every plant in the valley bent toward it.

The wheat bowed.

The orchard trees rustled.

The flowers opened.

Even the weeds seemed to straighten proudly.

The squirrel stared.

Then pointed.

”Does that mean it’s important?”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Very.”

The squirrel immediately tried to touch it.

Lin Yue slapped its paw away.

”No.”

”But—”

”No eating mysterious interworld seeds.”

The squirrel looked offended.

”I wasn’t going to eat it.”

Everyone stared.

It slowly lowered its paw.

”...Probably.”

The Seedling’s First Gift

The Golden Space displayed another message.

[WORLD-TREE SEED HAS GERMINATED.]

[ROOT NETWORK FORMING.]

[CAUTION.]

Lin Yue’s smile disappeared.

”What’s the caution?”

The message changed.

[WORLD-TREE WILL CONNECT TO ALL LIVING SYSTEMS WITHIN RANGE.]

Lin Yue stared.

”How far is the range?”

The Golden Space responded.

[UNKNOWN.]

She closed her eyes.

Of course.

Why would anything ever be simple?

Eira approached.

”This is why the First Mother created the Guardians.”

”To protect the Worldseed?”

”No.”

Eira looked at the tiny plant.

”To prevent one Worldseed from connecting everything.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Why would that be dangerous?”

Eira answered quietly.

”Because if one root dies...”

She pointed toward the sky.

”...everything connected to it could die too.”

The First Decision

Lin Yue immediately moved the seedling.

Not far.

Only into a prepared isolation plot.

The plot had:

Stone barriers.

Separate water.

Separate soil.

A drainage system.

Observation equipment.

Temperature sensors.

And three layers of magical containment.

Shen Rui watched her work.

”You’re quarantining a magical tree.”

”Yes.”

”From another world.”

”Yes.”

”Inside a magical pocket dimension.”

”Yes.”

He nodded.

”I’m beginning to understand why your family stopped questioning you.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Good.”

She carefully labeled the plot.

WORLD-TREE SEED ORIGIN: UNKNOWN WORLD DO NOT TOUCH DO NOT WATER WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION DO NOT EAT DO NOT LET THE SQUIRREL NEAR IT

The squirrel looked at the sign.

”Why am I specifically mentioned?”

”Experience.”

The First Root

By sunset, the seedling had developed roots.

Lin Yue expected them to remain within the isolation plot.

They didn’t.

One tiny golden root slipped beneath the stone barrier.

Lin Yue stared.

”That’s impossible.”

She carefully dug.

The root had passed beneath the barrier without disturbing the soil.

She followed it.

Ten meters.

Twenty.

Thirty.

Then—

it stopped.

At the end of the root was a tiny golden flower.

Lin Yue crouched.

The flower opened.

Inside was a miniature image.

A field.

A farmer.

A child planting seeds.

Lin Yue watched silently.

The image changed.

A forest.

A river.

A village.

A family eating together.

A school.

A workshop.

A marketplace.

A thousand small pieces of ordinary life.

Then the image disappeared.

Lin Yue whispered:

”It isn’t connecting to resources.”

Eira nodded.

”No.”

”It is connecting to life.”

The Hidden Function

Lin Yue spent the next day studying the root.

The World-Tree wasn’t absorbing energy.

It was storing relationships.

Every living system it touched became part of its memory.

A farmer’s knowledge.

A child’s laughter.

A seed’s genetic memory.

A river’s movement.

A forest’s growth.

A family’s history.

The tree wasn’t merely biological.

It was ecological memory.

Lin Yue slowly understood.

”The First Mother wasn’t building a network.”

Eira looked at her.

”She was building a memory.”

”Yes.”

”A memory of the living world.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”So when civilizations disappear...”

”The World-Tree remembers.”

Why the Hollow Was Afraid

The realization came suddenly.

Lin Yue stood up.

”The Hollow.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

”What about it?”

”It consumes connections.”

Eira’s expression changed.

”Yes.”

”But the World-Tree preserves connections.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue looked at the tiny golden seedling.

”Then the Hollow isn’t trying to destroy the Worldseeds.”

Eira slowly nodded.

”It is trying to destroy their memory.”

Lin Yue’s face hardened.

”If it succeeds, every world could forget how to rebuild.”

Shen Rui understood.

”That means agriculture...”

”Gone.”

”Engineering...”

”Gone.”

”Medicine.”

”Gone.”

”History.”

”Gone.”

”Everything people learned.”

Lin Yue clenched her fists.

”Exactly.”

The Memory Vault

Lin Yue immediately began building.

Not another farm.

Not another factory.

A library.

But not an ordinary library.

The Memory Vault would preserve knowledge in multiple forms.

Books.

Diagrams.

Seeds.

Tools.

Machines.

Samples.

Maps.

Oral histories.

Recorded lessons.

Construction models.

Agricultural plots.

Medical references.

And living demonstrations.

Her father looked at the enormous building.

”What are you calling it?”

Lin Yue considered.

”The Memory Vault.”

Her grandmother shook her head.

”Too serious.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”What would you call it?”

Her grandmother smiled.

”The House of Things We Don’t Want to Forget.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”That is terrible.”

”It is memorable.”

”...Fair.”

Everyone Contributes

The entire household became involved.

Her father organized builders.

Her stepmother, Madam Zhao, gathered family records.

Her grandmother collected recipes and traditional household knowledge.

Shen Rui organized engineering documents.

The farmers contributed planting techniques.

The fishermen contributed navigation methods.

The healers contributed medical knowledge.

The blacksmiths recorded metalworking techniques.

The carpenters documented joinery.

The printers preserved books.

The children drew pictures.

Lin Yue insisted that the children’s drawings be included.

Her father looked surprised.

”Why?”

”Because history isn’t only written by scholars.”

She looked at the children.

”Sometimes the most important memories are ordinary.”

Lumi’s Contribution

Lumi surprised everyone.

She flew into the Memory Vault one evening.

Then she touched the wall.

Golden light spread across the stone.

Images appeared.

Thousands of them.

The first forests.

The first rivers.

The first Guardians.

The first Worldseed.

The first farmers.

The first settlements.

The first tools.

The first harvest.

The first family.

Lin Yue stared.

”You remember all of that?”

Lumi nodded.

”How?”

Lumi touched her chest.

”World memory.”

Lin Yue smiled sadly.

”So that’s why you were created.”

Lumi shook her head.

Then pointed at Lin Yue.

Lin Yue frowned.

”For me?”

Lumi smiled.

”For everyone.”

A Difficult Question

That night, Lin Yue sat with Eira.

”Why didn’t the First Mother stop the Red Root?”

Eira was quiet.

”She tried.”

”What happened?”

”She trusted the wrong people.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”People?”

”Keepers.”

Eira explained that every Worldseed eventually chose a Keeper.

The Keeper was supposed to guide.

Teach.

Protect.

But over time, some Keepers became rulers.

They centralized power.

They decided what people needed.

Then what people should know.

Eventually—

what people were allowed to think.

Lin Yue stared into the fire.

”So the real danger isn’t power.”

”No.”

”It’s believing you know what’s best for everyone.”

Eira nodded.

Lin Yue smiled bitterly.

”That sounds terrifyingly easy.”

”Yes.”

Shen Rui’s Lesson

The next morning, Lin Yue found Shen Rui teaching the children.

He was explaining how to repair a broken water pump.

A little boy held a wrench.

”Like this?”

”Not quite.”

Shen Rui crouched.

”Don’t force it.”

”Why?”

”Because machines aren’t your enemy.”

The children laughed.

Shen Rui smiled.

”Understand how something works before you fight it.”

Lin Yue watched from a distance.

He noticed her.

”You’re spying again.”

”Observing.”

”Same thing.”

She smiled.

”You’re a good teacher.”

He shrugged.

”I learned from you.”

”No.”

He shook his head.

”I learned from watching you.”

She became quiet.

Shen Rui looked at her.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

But she smiled.

The First Hollow Sign

Three weeks passed.

The Memory Vault neared completion.

The World-Tree remained stable.

The interworld network expanded.

The Living Farm produced its best harvest yet.

Everything seemed peaceful.

Then—

a farmer came running.

”Lady Lin!”

Lin Yue turned.

”What happened?”

He was pale.

”The western field.”

”What about it?”

”The wheat.”

They hurried there.

Lin Yue stopped.

The entire western field was gray.

Not dead.

Not diseased.

Gray.

The wheat still stood.

But it had no color.

No smell.

No texture.

Lin Yue touched one stalk.

It crumbled into dust.

Her expression changed.

”Everyone back.”

The farmer obeyed.

Shen Rui arrived.

”What happened?”

Lin Yue examined the soil.

Nothing.

No fungus.

No insects.

No toxin.

No magical residue.

Nothing.

That was the problem.

There was nothing.

The field had been emptied.

The Hollow Has Arrived

Eira appeared.

The moment she saw the field—

she froze.

”No.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”What?”

”The Hollow.”

A chill went through her.

”How?”

Eira pointed toward the World-Tree.

”One of its roots reached too far.”

Lin Yue immediately turned.

The golden seedling was glowing.

One root extended beyond the containment zone.

It stretched westward.

Toward the field.

Lin Yue followed it.

The root had touched the soil.

And something had followed it back.

A tiny black mark appeared on the root.

Then another.

Like rot.

But it wasn’t rot.

It was absence.

Lin Yue whispered:

”It found the connection.”

The First Severing

Lin Yue grabbed a tool.

Shen Rui caught her wrist.

”Wait.”

”I need to cut the root.”

”If you cut it—”

”The Hollow might spread.”

”If you don’t—”

”It will spread anyway.”

They looked at each other.

Lin Yue understood.

He was right.

She needed a better solution.

She closed her eyes.

Then remembered the First Mother’s lesson.

The Guardians were created to prevent one system from controlling everything.

The answer wasn’t destroying the connection.

It was creating boundaries.

Lin Yue turned toward Verde.

”Can you separate the root?”

The little Guardian stepped forward.

Green light spread across the field.

The soil changed.

Roots formed.

The infected golden root became isolated.

Neri sent water.

The Forest Guardian sent living energy.

The Soil Guardian stabilized the ground.

Lumi created a golden boundary.

The black mark stopped spreading.

Lin Yue stared.

The Guardians had created an ecological firewall.

She smiled.

”Of course.”

The Living Firewall

Lin Yue immediately documented the process.

A natural boundary.

Not a wall.

Not a machine.

A living ecosystem designed to prevent contamination.

She named it:

THE LIVING FIREWALL.

The idea could be applied everywhere.

Between Worldseeds.

Between farms.

Between ecosystems.

Between information systems.

The Hollow could consume connections.

But it couldn’t easily consume systems with healthy boundaries.

Lin Yue looked at the Guardians.

”We can fight it.”

Eira nodded.

”But not with force.”

”With resilience.”

”Yes.”

The Message From the First Mother

That night, the World Road opened.

The First Mother’s face appeared.

Lin Yue stood before her.

”We found the Hollow.”

The First Mother nodded.

”I know.”

”You knew it would come.”

”Yes.”

”Why didn’t you warn us?”

”Because warnings do not create strength.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”You could have told us.”

”I could.”

”Then why didn’t you?”

The First Mother smiled sadly.

”Because I needed to know what kind of Keeper you would become.”

Lin Yue’s expression hardened.

”You tested me?”

”No.”

The First Mother looked at her.

”I watched you.”

”That sounds like a test.”

”It was.”

Lin Yue folded her arms.

”I don’t appreciate being tested.”

The First Mother laughed softly.

”Good.”

”Good?”

”A Keeper who obeys blindly is dangerous.”

Lin Yue paused.

The First Mother continued.

”You questioned me.”

”You questioned Eira.”

”You questioned the Golden Space.”

”You questioned yourself.”

She smiled.

”That is why I chose you.”

The Question

Lin Yue stared.

”Chose me for what?”

The First Mother became serious.

”To become the first Keeper who does not rule.”

Lin Yue’s breath caught.

”The first Keeper who teaches.”

The World Road brightened.

”The first Keeper who builds systems that can function without her.”

Lin Yue looked at her farm.

Her family.

Her school.

Her workers.

Her Guardians.

Her friends.

Her growing valley.

She understood.

The Golden Space had never been about making her powerful.

It had been teaching her how to make herself unnecessary.

The greatest success would not be that everyone depended on Lin Yue.

It would be that one day—

they didn’t need her.

The New Mission

The First Mother raised her hand.

Behind her appeared thousands of worlds.

Some thriving.

Some damaged.

Some silent.

Some barely alive.

Lin Yue stared.

”There are so many.”

”Yes.”

”Some need help.”

”Yes.”

”And the Hollow is coming.”

”Yes.”

Lin Yue took a deep breath.

”What do you want me to do?”

The First Mother smiled.

”Build.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”That is all?”

”No.”

The First Mother pointed toward the worlds.

”Teach them how to build.”

The Promise

Lin Yue looked at Shen Rui.

He smiled.

She looked at Lumi.

The Guardian nodded.

She looked at Eira.

The Archivist bowed.

Then she looked at her family.

Her father.

Her mother.

Her grandmother.

Her cousins.

The farmers.

The workers.

The children.

Everyone who had helped turn an empty courtyard into a living community.

Lin Yue smiled.

”All right.”

She turned toward the World Road.

”We’ll build.”

The First Mother disappeared.

The World Road remained open.

And across countless worlds—

small lights began appearing.

One by one.

Villages.

Farms.

Schools.

Workshops.

Libraries.

Gardens.

People rebuilding.

Not because one powerful Keeper commanded them.

But because someone had taught them how.

The Seed

Late that night, Lin Yue returned to the World-Tree.

The little seedling had grown.

It was now waist-high.

She crouched beside it.

”You caused quite a mess.”

The leaves rustled.

Lin Yue smiled.

”But you’re useful.”

A tiny golden flower opened.

Inside it—

was a new image.

A farm.

But not her farm.

A completely different farm.

On another world.

A child stood beside a field.

Holding a seed.

The child looked toward the sky.

Then planted it.

Lin Yue smiled.

”Good.”

She stood.

”Keep growing.”

Behind her, Shen Rui waited.

”Coming?”

”Yes.”

She looked back one final time.

The World-Tree glowed softly.

Its roots reached into the earth.

But this time—

they stopped at the boundary.

It had learned.

So had Lin Yue.

And beyond the valley—

the Hollow waited.

But now—

the worlds were preparing.

To be continued...
