Chapter 45: Chapter Forty-Three: The Tree Beneath the Kingdom

The World Road closed behind them.

Lin Yue immediately regretted leaving home.

Not because she was afraid.

Not because the Northern Kingdom looked dangerous.

Not even because a mysterious black tree was apparently growing beneath a royal palace.

She regretted leaving because she had forgotten her favorite pair of gardening gloves.

She stared at her hands.

Then at the enormous palace ahead.

Then back at her hands.

Shen Rui noticed.

”What?”

”My gloves.”

He blinked.

”You crossed worlds because you forgot your gloves?”

”No.”

”Good.”

”I crossed worlds because there’s a mysterious tree under a kingdom.”

”Ah.”

”But I still forgot my gloves.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”I brought an extra pair.”

Lin Yue turned toward him.

”You did?”

He reached into his pack.

Two gardening gloves.

Her exact size.

Lin Yue stared.

”You planned for this?”

”You complain when your hands get dirty.”

”I do not.”

”You complained yesterday.”

”That was different.”

”How?”

”I was planting potatoes.”

Shen Rui handed her the gloves.

”Exactly.”

She smiled.

”Thank you.”

The Northern Kingdom

King Ardan led them through the capital.

The city was beautiful.

Or—

it had once been.

Stone buildings lined wide streets.

Tall towers rose toward the sky.

Decorative fountains stood in the plazas.

But almost every fountain was dry.

The markets were nearly empty.

Vegetable stalls had disappeared.

Grain merchants guarded their remaining sacks.

People stood in long lines for food.

Lin Yue’s expression became serious.

”How long has the food shortage lasted?”

”Eight months.”

”Population?”

”Approximately eighty thousand in the capital.”

”And the surrounding territory?”

”Nearly half a million.”

Lin Yue stopped walking.

”Half a million?”

The king nodded.

Her mind immediately began calculating.

Food requirements.

Seed reserves.

Water.

Storage.

Transport.

Livestock.

Soil.

Labor.

Time.

She looked at Shen Rui.

”This isn’t a farming problem.”

He nodded.

”It’s a food-system collapse.”

King Ardan stared.

”What is the difference?”

Lin Yue pointed toward the market.

”If your farmers produce too little, that’s agriculture.”

She pointed toward the empty warehouses.

”If storage fails, that’s logistics.”

She pointed toward the roads.

”If transport fails, that’s infrastructure.”

She pointed toward the palace.

”If decisions fail, that’s governance.”

Then she looked at the hungry people.

”When all of them fail together, you don’t have a farm problem.”

She paused.

”You have a system problem.”

The First Rule

King Ardan immediately asked:

”Can you fix it?”

Lin Yue didn’t answer.

Instead, she asked:

”How much grain remains?”

”Approximately three months.”

”How much seed?”

”Almost none.”

”How much livestock?”

”Less than a quarter of what we had.”

”Working wells?”

”Thirty percent.”

”Functional irrigation?”

”Forty percent.”

”Food distribution?”

”Poor.”

”Records?”

The king hesitated.

”Some.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”That’s not a number.”

”Perhaps twenty percent.”

She rubbed her forehead.

Shen Rui whispered:

”You’re doing the thing.”

”What thing?”

”The thing where you become terrifyingly calm.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”I’m thinking.”

”That is what worries me.”

The Royal Agriculture Office

The king took them to the agricultural records office.

Lin Yue expected shelves.

She found chaos.

Records were stacked everywhere.

Some were damaged.

Some were incomplete.

Some were contradictory.

Some were written in different measurement systems.

She picked up one document.

”What is this?”

”Last year’s harvest record.”

She picked up another.

”And this?”

”Last year’s harvest record.”

”They disagree.”

”Yes.”

”Which is correct?”

”We don’t know.”

Lin Yue slowly put both papers down.

Shen Rui looked amused.

She turned toward him.

”Don’t.”

”I didn’t say anything.”

”You were thinking something.”

”I was thinking that you might miss your peaceful farm.”

”I miss my farm already.”

The Agricultural Census

Lin Yue immediately created a census.

Every village would record:

Land area.

Soil type.

Available water.

Crops grown.

Seed stock.

Livestock.

Workers.

Tools.

Storage.

Harvest.

Losses.

Debts.

Transport routes.

And food reserves.

King Ardan watched as she wrote.

”You want every farmer to report all this?”

”Yes.”

”How long will that take?”

”Several weeks.”

”We don’t have several weeks.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”Then start today.”

The king hesitated.

She smiled.

”If we don’t know what we have, we can’t know what we need.”

The Soil Problem

The next morning, Lin Yue visited the nearest agricultural district.

The fields were enormous.

But the soil was exhausted.

Years of planting without adequate nutrient replacement had depleted it.

The farmers blamed the strange black tree.

Lin Yue wasn’t convinced.

She collected samples.

Different fields.

Different depths.

Different locations.

She tested them.

The results were disturbing.

The soil wasn’t simply nutrient-poor.

Its microbial activity was almost nonexistent.

Lin Yue crouched.

”This is why nothing grows.”

A farmer frowned.

”Because the Hollow took the life from the soil?”

”Partly.”

She held up a handful.

”But you also have twenty years of poor soil management.”

The farmer looked offended.

”Are you saying we’ve been farming incorrectly?”

”No.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”I’m saying you farmed successfully for a long time.”

She pointed toward the fields.

”But the system wasn’t given enough time to recover.”

The farmer stared at the soil.

”So what do we do?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Feed the soil.”

Compost

The first new industry was not glamorous.

Compost.

Lin Yue taught villagers to separate organic waste.

Crop residues.

Animal manure.

Leaves.

Kitchen scraps.

Ash.

Plant material.

The piles were layered.

Moisture was controlled.

Temperature was monitored.

After weeks—

rich, dark compost began forming.

The farmers stared.

One elderly farmer poked it.

”It smells like earth.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”That’s a good sign.”

Green Manure

Then came another lesson.

Cover crops.

Plants that weren’t harvested for food.

Plants grown specifically to protect and restore the soil.

The farmers were confused.

”You want us to grow something and then bury it?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”To feed the soil.”

”But we need food.”

”Not every crop needs to feed people directly.”

Lin Yue explained nitrogen fixation.

Root systems.

Organic matter.

Erosion control.

Moisture retention.

The farmers listened.

Then one asked:

”Who taught you all this?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Books.”

The farmer laughed.

”You read very strange books.”

”You have no idea.”

The Seed Vault

The royal seed storage was almost empty.

Lin Yue opened her Golden Space.

Inside were seeds from countless worlds.

But she didn’t simply hand them over.

She selected carefully.

Local varieties first.

Drought-resistant varieties.

Fast-growing vegetables.

Legumes.

Root crops.

Grains.

Medicinal plants.

Fruit trees.

She created separate seed trials.

Nothing was planted widely until tested.

King Ardan watched.

”Why not give us everything?”

”Because more isn’t always better.”

She held up a seed.

”A crop that grows beautifully here but destroys your soil isn’t a gift.”

She held up another.

”A crop that requires too much water will fail during your next drought.”

Then another.

”A crop that spreads uncontrollably could become a disaster.”

The king nodded slowly.

”You think several years ahead.”

”I have to.”

The Royal Greenhouse

Lin Yue proposed something radical.

A greenhouse.

Not magical.

Not enormous.

Simple.

Wood.

Glass.

Stone.

Ventilation.

Water collection.

Temperature control.

The engineers were skeptical.

Until they saw the first seedlings.

Green leaves appeared inside the structure while the outside fields remained barren.

The royal gardeners were astonished.

One whispered:

”Winter won’t stop us.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”Not completely.”

She smiled.

”But it doesn’t have to.”

The Black Tree

After ten days of agricultural work, Lin Yue finally visited the underground chamber.

The entrance was beneath the royal palace.

The staircase descended deep into the earth.

The deeper they went—

the colder it became.

Black roots covered the walls.

Shen Rui touched one.

It moved.

He immediately pulled his hand away.

”That wasn’t there before.”

Lin Yue stared.

”No.”

The root had followed them.

A silver flower opened.

Inside—

was a memory.

Lin Yue saw herself.

Her farm.

Her family.

Shen Rui.

The World Road.

The Worldseed.

Then—

the image changed.

A black tree stood beneath her own farm.

Lin Yue froze.

”That isn’t possible.”

Eira appeared beside her.

”It is.”

”Why?”

”Because the Hollow learns from connections.”

Lin Yue looked at the flower.

”It is showing me possible futures.”

Eira nodded.

”Not futures.”

”Then what?”

”Fears.”

The Tree’s Voice

The chamber trembled.

The black tree began glowing.

A voice whispered.

”You cannot save everything.”

Lin Yue stood still.

”I know.”

”You cannot protect everyone.”

”I know.”

”You will fail.”

”Yes.”

The tree seemed surprised.

Lin Yue stepped closer.

”I will.”

Shen Rui looked at her.

She continued.

”I’ll make mistakes.”

The black roots shifted.

”I’ll lose crops.”

Another root moved.

”I’ll misunderstand people.”

The chamber darkened.

”I’ll build things that fail.”

The tree trembled.

”I’ll probably create another accounting disaster.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”Definitely.”

Lin Yue glared at him.

”But...”

She placed her hand against the tree.

”I’ll learn.”

The blackness stopped.

”And I’ll teach someone else what I learned.”

The silver flower opened.

The Hollow’s Question

A voice whispered:

”Why?”

Lin Yue answered:

”Because that’s how people survive.”

”Why continue when failure is certain?”

She looked at Shen Rui.

He looked back.

Then she looked toward the roots.

”Because success isn’t the only reason to build.”

The tree became silent.

Lin Yue continued.

”We build because someone will live inside what we create.”

The chamber shook.

”We plant because someone else may harvest.”

The roots began glowing.

”We teach because someone else may know more than us.”

The silver flowers opened.

”And we love...”

She hesitated.

Shen Rui gently took her hand.

”...because life isn’t only about survival.”

The entire chamber became bright.

The Transformation

The black tree began changing.

Its bark remained dark.

But silver lines appeared across it.

New leaves emerged.

Not golden.

Not black.

Silver.

The Hollow had not become a Worldseed.

It had become something different.

A Memory Tree.

It absorbed forgotten things.

But instead of erasing them—

it transformed them into lessons.

Failed crops became knowledge.

Broken tools became diagrams.

Lost settlements became warnings.

Mistakes became records.

Deaths became remembrance.

The Hollow had found a purpose.

Not destruction.

Memory.

Lin Yue whispered:

”You’re not a Hollow anymore.”

The tree rustled.

A tiny silver leaf fell into her hand.

The Royal Archive

Lin Yue immediately created a new institution.

THE ARCHIVE OF FAILURE.

King Ardan stared at the name.

”Failure?”

”Yes.”

”Why would anyone want to preserve failures?”

”Because people hide mistakes.”

She looked at him.

”And hidden mistakes get repeated.”

The archive would contain:

Failed crops.

Failed engineering projects.

Failed policies.

Failed businesses.

Failed medical treatments.

Failed experiments.

Failed harvests.

Failed buildings.

Failed irrigation systems.

And the lessons learned from each.

Shen Rui smiled.

”I like it.”

Lin Yue raised an eyebrow.

”Why?”

”Because you’ll finally have somewhere to put your failed inventions.”

She kicked his boot.

A Royal Announcement

King Ardan stood before his people.

”We will no longer hide failure.”

The crowd murmured.

”We will record it.”

More murmurs.

”We will study it.”

Silence.

”And we will teach our children not to repeat it.”

An old farmer raised his hand.

”What if the king makes a mistake?”

Everyone became very quiet.

Lin Yue nearly laughed.

King Ardan looked at her.

She smiled.

”Answer honestly.”

The king sighed.

”Then the record will include mine.”

The crowd laughed.

The tension broke.

And something changed.

For the first time in years—

people began talking openly about what had gone wrong.

The Kingdom Rebuilds

Months passed.

The transformation was slow.

Painfully slow.

But real.

The first restored field produced beans.

The second produced vegetables.

The third produced grain.

The wells improved.

The livestock increased.

The seed vault expanded.

The greenhouse produced seedlings.

The compost system spread.

The market reopened.

Children returned to school.

The royal workshops became busy again.

And the underground Memory Tree continued growing.

It never demanded worship.

It never demanded control.

It simply remembered.

The New Partnership

King Ardan eventually approached Lin Yue.

”You have saved my kingdom.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”No.”

The king looked confused.

”The farmers saved it.”

”The engineers.”

”The teachers.”

”The children.”

”The healers.”

”The workers.”

”I only helped organize what they already had.”

The king smiled.

”You would make a terrible ruler.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”Thank you.”

He bowed.

”I meant it as a compliment.”

A Quiet Garden

Before leaving, Lin Yue visited the royal greenhouse.

The first experimental garden was thriving.

She walked between rows of vegetables.

Shen Rui followed.

”You’re happy.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

She touched a leaf.

”Because when we arrived, this place was dying.”

”And now?”

She looked around.

”It has a future.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”You really love this.”

”What?”

”Growing things.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Plants. Businesses. Schools. Communities.”

She paused.

”People.”

He looked at her.

”You forgot one.”

”What?”

”Relationships.”

She smiled.

”I’m still learning that one.”

He stepped closer.

”So am I.”

Their hands touched.

This time, Lin Yue didn’t pretend it was accidental.

The Almost Confession

Shen Rui looked into her eyes.

”Lin Yue...”

”Yes?”

”I...”

A messenger suddenly ran into the greenhouse.

”Lady Lin!”

They jumped apart.

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

”What?”

The messenger was breathless.

”Emergency!”

Shen Rui looked toward the ceiling.

”Of course.”

”What happened?”

”The World Road.”

Lin Yue immediately became serious.

”What about it?”

”It opened by itself.”

”Where?”

The messenger swallowed.

”Inside your farm.”

Lin Yue froze.

”That should be impossible.”

”Yes.”

”Who came through?”

The messenger hesitated.

”No one.”

Lin Yue frowned.

”Then why is it an emergency?”

The messenger looked terrified.

”Because something came through.”

The Empty Traveler

Lin Yue and Shen Rui rushed back.

The World Road stood in the center of the farm.

But it wasn’t glowing normally.

Its light was black and silver.

Everyone stood around it.

Her family.

The Guardians.

The farmers.

The children.

Nobody approached.

Lin Yue stepped forward.

A shape stood inside the portal.

Small.

Human-shaped.

Wrapped in a cloak.

Its face could not be seen.

Lumi flew toward it.

Then stopped.

She trembled.

”Lumi?”

The little Guardian whispered:

”It’s not alive.”

Lin Yue’s heart tightened.

”Then what is it?”

The figure slowly raised its head.

A voice came from beneath the hood.

Not the Hollow.

Not the First Mother.

Something else.

Something older.

”Keeper.”

Lin Yue stood still.

”How do you know me?”

The figure extended one hand.

In its palm was a tiny golden seed.

The same kind as the first Worldseed.

But this seed was cracked.

Black roots grew through it.

The figure whispered:

”Your world was not the first.”

Lin Yue stared.

”What do you mean?”

The figure lifted its head.

And finally—

Lin Yue saw its face.

It was hers.

Older.

Much older.

Scarred.

Tired.

And wearing the same crescent necklace Shen Rui had given her.

Lin Yue stopped breathing.

The stranger smiled sadly.

”I’m you.”

The World Road exploded with light.

To be continued...
