Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 2898: Chapter 2899: Assault at the Ruined House

”Not eating.” Xiaoyu replied coldly, turning and walking towards the dilapidated room on the side.

As he turned, Bai Ruozhu finally saw clearly that the child’s back was a bit hunched, like a Luo Guo.

”You ungrateful brat, how dare you talk to your Grandpa like that?” The old beggar scolded, but Xiaoyu seemed not to hear him, finding a corner away from the wall, lying down on the ground.

”If he doesn’t want to eat, fine. Hurry up and give it to us. You’re not planning to sneak some for yourself again, are you?” Goudan shouted.

Bai Ruozhu was still watching, and the old beggar chuckled awkwardly as he had to distribute the candies to the children who were eagerly waiting, but secretly hid two pieces in his clothes.

”Madam, do you see anyone suitable?” This time, the old beggar didn’t get too close, as he probably already realized that Ao Song didn’t quite like him.

Bai Ruozhu looked around but didn’t find any children resembling Fang Qing or Aluo. Without any blood relationship, finding someone based on imagination wasn’t easy.

”Is your grandson born with that hump?” she asked.

The old beggar paused for a moment, then smiled bitterly, ”No, last year he was beaten. Almost didn’t survive, and he’s been like that ever since, his temperament’s also become quite strange.”

”If you hadn’t stolen from others and then run off yourself, would Xiaoyu have been beaten like that? You old bastard!” Goudan scolded, his words mumbled as his mouth was full of candy.

”Go away, kids shouldn’t speak nonsense.” The old beggar glared, scaring off Goudan, but Bai Ruozhu and Ao Song understood that the old man had set up his own grandson, so the grandson didn’t want to deal with him.

Ao Song was quite upset, pointing and saying, ”Isn’t this child only six or seven years old? He was only five last year, right? You caused trouble and left him to fend for himself? Are you even human?”

”He’s eight, he just looks small.” The old beggar quickly explained.

Hearing this, Ao Song became even angrier, lifting her foot to kick him, but Bai Ruozhu stopped her.

Don’t be fooled by Ao Song’s appearance of a fragile young lady; she’s not an ordinary person. If she kicked him, the old beggar would be left half-dead.

”He’s eight and still looks like this? What kind of Grandpa are you?” Ao Song asked furiously.

”What can I do?” The old beggar said helplessly, ”Those years, when the Yueqiu Tribe came and slaughtered the village, I could only hold him and hide here and there. The village was destroyed, the family broken, people dead. What could I do while holding an infant needing care? Coming here to the relatively safer Xunyang City, yet no family would hire an old man like me, so I could only beg with him, and it’s not easy just to raise him.”

In times of war, there are indeed many helpless situations. Bai Ruozhu felt some sympathy for the grandfather and grandson, and said, ”Let me take a look at him. He’s still young. Perhaps there’s still time to treat him.”

Xiaoyu’s voice from inside the room was cold, ”No need. I’m fine as I am now. Quite a few people feel sorry for me for being a little Luo Guo and give me more money, so I won’t starve.”

”How can you talk like that? Come out here and let this lady have a look.” The old beggar said, about to walk inside, but Xiaoyu suddenly sprang up, swiftly jumping out the window, evading even further.

”Xiaoyu, don’t you want to get better?” Bai Ruozhu asked in a gentle voice.

”No!” Xiaoyu replied, though there was a hint of uncertainty in his eyes. It wasn’t that the child didn’t want to; he was worried about something.

Bai Ruozhu felt a pang of heartache for this sensible child, and said to him, ”I won’t charge a consultation fee to treat you, and the medicine won’t cost anything either.”

Goudan popped his head over, ”Yeah, Xiaoyu, this sister just treated my wounds, and they don’t hurt anymore. It’s really effective! And she didn’t ask me for money.”

Bai Ruozhu smiled at Goudan; this child had a kind heart.

Yet Xiaoyu just turned and walked away, ”I said no need.”

The old beggar wanted to chase after him but couldn’t catch up. Angrily, he muttered, calling the child a harbinger of doom, with something wrong in his head.

”Shut up!” Ao Song shouted impatiently.

The old beggar instantly quieted down, shrank back his hands, and retreated to the side.

Ao Song reached into her money pouch, intending to give the children some money, but Bai Ruozhu held her hand down.

”Let’s go first. I’ll explain when we get back,” Bai Ruozhu said.

Ao Song was a bit confused, but she knew Bai Ruozhu was not a cold-hearted person, so she must have her reasons. She’d ask about it later.

Just as the two took a couple of steps, they heard Xiaoyu’s exclamation from afar, but the sound abruptly stopped. It was unclear whether he had fainted or someone covered his mouth.

”Xiaoyu, what’s wrong?” The old beggar immediately became nervous, asking while walking towards the direction of the sound.

Bai Ruozhu quickly stepped forward, pulling the old beggar back, ”Stay back, take the children and hide.”

No sooner had she finished speaking when an arrow flew towards her with a screeching sound.

The dagger was drawn, and with a clang, the arrow was knocked away, landing on the ground beside them.

”The arrowhead is poisoned.” Ao Song said, stepping forward, ”Who’s targeting us?”

”Probably,” Bai Ruozhu replied with a cold face, ”otherwise, why would they need such a setup to deal with a group of beggars?”

Bai Ruozhu was not angry about being ambushed, but because the opponent dared to use poison, which was utterly reckless.

Besides, there were so many people here. If the arrows injured innocent beggars, what then?

Maybe in these people’s eyes, the lives of beggars were not considered lives at all?

This made her incredibly furious. What’s wrong with being beggars? Beggars are people too! Their lives were miserable but should never be disregarded and slaughtered casually.

”You protect these children, I’ll deal with them.” Bai Ruozhu said.

”Be careful.” Ao Song said, a bit worried. Just now Bai Ruozhu had sent the dark guards to deliver the wooden doll, and now had no one to help her, will she be okay?

This mansion was dilapidated, overgrown with weeds in many places, and with some broken walls and remnants, it was indeed a good place to hide.

She hid not far away and had even better spots to conceal herself.

She used qinggong, quickly rushing forward.

Arrows whistled close by, evaded by her, or she deflected them with her dagger, or they were blocked by her magic technique’s defensive cover.

Then she flipped and hid herself in the overgrowth, and the killers could see the movement in the grass but couldn’t find Bai Ruozhu’s figure.

She had already entered the Space, took a sip of water, and brought out a handful of silver needles.

”She’s hiding in the grass, shoot the grass, and send someone over.” Someone ordered in a low voice, the voice deliberately hoarse, but Bai Ruozhu could still tell it was a woman.

”Madam Sun?” Bai Ruozhu’s lips curled into a smile, ”To avenge your husband, you bought assassins to kill, really trying everything openly and covertly.”

Someone slowly approached the overgrowth, Bai Ruozhu seized the opportunity and exited the Space, tossing a few silver needles over. The person fell to the ground without even a chance to scream.

The assassins realized they couldn’t continue playing hide and seek with Bai Ruozhu. At the leader’s command, everyone charged towards the overgrowth, including the woman suspected to be Madam Sun.
