Chapter 2780: Chapter 2781: The Matter of King Rui

Bai Ruozhu squinted her eyes. How did this old nun know?

The Emperor was confident enough to place Meng Jinse in Jingxin Temple, where almost everyone had been replaced, ensuring that no one would recognize Meng Jinse’s identity. But how did this old nun know?

Could it be that she used this to threaten Meng Jinse?

Speaking of Meng Jinse, she has been living in Beiyu City and rarely comes to Capital City, so not many people here know her, except for the aristocrats.

Moreover, during the investiture ceremony when King Rui ascended the throne, the common folks watched from afar and couldn’t see the faces clearly.

Suddenly, she reached out a hand and grasped Hui Ming’s throat tightly, ”Then you should know who I am, right? Killing you is just a formality for me.”

Her five fingers tightened, causing Hui Ming’s face to turn red and she began to struggle to breathe.

”Stop!” Meng Jinse’s voice rang out as she finally came out from inside the room.

Bai Ruozhu casually threw the plump nun on the ground and turned to Meng Jinse, saying, ”I just returned from the sea, killed dozens of pirates alone, and I won’t have any mercy for those with bad intentions.”

Meng Jinse’s eyes turned red, ”Ruozhu, would you let someone put out the fire first? Can we have a proper talk?”

Bai Ruozhu thought for a moment and finally nodded, following her into the room. It took a while for the other nuns to regain their senses and they hurriedly fetched water to extinguish the fire. Hui Ming sat on the ground, her eyes filled with a sinister look.

”It’s not her fault, it’s mine.” Meng Jinse seemed hesitant to speak, biting her lower lip almost to the point of bleeding.

”Go ahead, at least let me know what’s going on. You are also my sworn sister, like my real sister—there’s nothing you can’t tell me.” Bai Ruozhu said.

Meng Jinse lowered her voice, ”King Rui came to see me, and Hui Ming happened to see it.”

”What?” Bai Ruozhu was surprised. Back when Tang Yin fought his way back to the Capital City, King Rui was defeated but managed to escape using tricks. His whereabouts have remained unknown.

Some say he’s dead, while others say he went to North Liao, but there hasn’t been a definitive answer.

Yet, King Rui dared to come see Meng Jinse?

”Why did he come to see you? Does he want revenge on you?” Bai Ruozhu vaguely guessed something but found it hard to believe. Could the man behind the Ghost Mask have another side?

”He wanted me to leave with him. I threatened him with my life, only then did I avoid being taken away, and it was because of that incident that Hui Ming was alerted.” Meng Jinse looked away, feeling somewhat embarrassed.

Bai Ruozhu became more certain of her suspicions, ”He’s not afraid of being caught, just to take you with him?”

”He’s a psychopath. He said that once he marries me, I’ll be his wife for life and must stay by his side. I’d rather die than stay with him!” Meng Jinse’s face flushed red, her teeth grinding with anger.

Bai Ruozhu saw the hatred in her eyes and knew she didn’t care for King Rui, which made her breathe a sigh of relief. Such tormented love stories definitely didn’t suit Meng Jinse and would endanger her entire family.

”Then you didn’t report to the Emperor later on?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

Meng Jinse lowered her head, ”I didn’t want to cause further trouble, and I also feared that the Emperor would become suspicious of me, so I didn’t tell anyone.”

”So, I must kill Hui Ming then. She knows too much and doesn’t keep quiet.” Bai Ruozhu said.

”Don’t—don’t kill her. Although she’s somewhat greedy, she hasn’t committed a major wrong. Killing her would make me uneasy for life.” She hurriedly pulled Bai Ruozhu’s sleeve and pleaded.

”It’s fine not to kill her, but she can’t stay conscious either. Not talking nonsense is good for her, or else she would not only harm herself but also you and everyone in this temple.” Bai Ruozhu said while taking out a medicine bottle, ”I’ll be back shortly.”

Meng Jinse still felt unwilling, but she understood the severity of the consequences. If Hui Ming hadn’t mentioned it, it would have been fine, but today she used it as a threat against her and Ruozhu.

Soon Bai Ruozhu returned, ”She’s asleep now; she’ll be dazed when she wakes up—not exactly insane, but she’ll forget many things and won’t talk nonsense.”

”It’s better this way.” Meng Jinse lowered her gaze.

Bai Ruozhu suddenly slapped her shoulder, almost causing her to stumble and fall.

”Couldn’t you just discuss this with me directly? When threatened, you just accept fate, but speaking to me doesn’t count?” Bai Ruozhu asked sharply.

Meng Jinse, embarrassed, couldn’t look at her and said, ”I realize I was wrong; I just felt it difficult to speak about.”

”That’s why you should come back with us to Beiyu City. This place is remote, and there aren’t many guards. If he shows up again and takes you away, what will your father do?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

”I know I was wrong, I’ll go back with you now. Once back in Beiyu City, I will explain everything to my father so he can make preparations early.” Meng Jinse finally came to her senses.

Bai Ruozhu nodded with satisfaction, ”Then let’s go, and don’t bother packing, just buy what you need anew.”

”There really isn’t much.” She chuckled bitterly, carrying a small bundle as she followed Bai Ruozhu.

Bai Ruozhu felt a bit of heartache; she was once the legitimate eldest daughter of the city lord of Beiyu City, living a life of luxury. When did she become someone with such a small bundle, probably containing only a change of underwear? As for the nun’s robe, she certainly wouldn’t be taking it along.

”Here, use this bag.” Bai Ruozhu took out a new bag produced by Hua Xiangrong from the Space, slinging it over her shoulder and letting her stuff the small bundle in.

”Is this a new style? It’s really beautiful.” Meng Jinse reached out to touch it, lacking the excitement of a young girl but still longing for it.

Bai Ruozhu held her hand, ”There are new clothes and jewelry, let’s go buy them now.”

”It’s inconvenient for me to be seen; let’s just return.” Meng Jinse said worriedly.

Bai Ruozhu then took out a Person Mask, ”You can wear this when you get on the horse carriage, ensuring no one will recognize you.”

Meng Jinse found it intriguing and reached out to touch it, ”It’s so thin; is it really human skin?”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but laugh, ”Haha, you’re too naive. Just because it’s called a Person Mask doesn’t mean it’s made of human skin. Just like Buddha Jumps Over the Wall is still a dish, this thing is made of special materials. It’s called this because it resembles human skin.”

While talking, the two left the room, and the fire in the backyard had been extinguished. When the crowd saw the two, they quickly made way, fearing Bai Ruozhu.

Meng Jinse didn’t speak to anyone and was led out of Jingxin Temple by Bai Ruozhu, where they saw Jiang Yichun standing outside.

”I thought you really intended to burn down the nunnery.” Jiang Yichun teased.

”I scattered Drug Powder around the outside of the fire, don’t be fooled by its intensity and smoke, but it burned only within that range; the fire couldn’t spread.” Bai Ruozhu grinned, showing eight white teeth, ”I know what I’m doing.”

”Indeed, my wife is considerate and meticulous.” Jiang Yichun laughed, praising her.
