Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1250: Chapter 1252 Understanding Compassion_1

The townsfolk essentially kept their doors closed, so Jiang Yichun sent officers to go door-to-door to inform everyone. The people, upon hearing this news, were all extremely grateful, some going as far as to thank the Imperial envoy dispatched by the Imperial Court, especially those households that had fallen ill, because the families with sick members had to pay more. For many, making ends meet had become an issue; they simply couldn’t afford that much silver.

The operation progressed very smoothly, but unfortunately, after coming out, the two of them didn’t discover anything. Bai Ruozhu was still worried about the safety of the patients and could only hurriedly return to the quarantine zone.

On this day, she was busy as usual, treating patients and prescribing formulas. By afternoon, suddenly, the miserable crying of a child was heard, followed by a small figure running over and hugging Bai Ruozhu’s leg, asking, ”Auntie, is my Grandpa dead?”

Bai Ruozhu stiffened for a moment, but in the end, the child found out.

Here, everyone was from the same village, and even though they were separated by the quarantine, the people taking care of them were acquaintances and the news easily spread.

Bai Ruozhu nodded with difficulty, saying, ”Your Grandpa was old and suddenly suffered from heart disease.”

Xiuxiu cried even harder, sobbing and shouting, ”I want my Grandpa, I want my Grandpa to come back!”

At that moment, everyone couldn’t help but wipe the corners of their eyes, and some tender-hearted women even shed tears. Seeing such a young child wailing, who could remain unmoved?

Bai Ruozhu stood there, somewhat at a loss. She didn’t know how to comfort Xiuxiu and eventually could only crouch down and tightly hug her, offering her a bit more warmth.

Xiuxiu was just a child, after all; having cried herself out, she eventually fell asleep in Bai Ruozhu’s arms. Bai Ruozhu picked her up, intending to take her back to the place that had been arranged for her to stay, but suddenly stopped in her tracks.

Sun Jia came up and asked, ”Doctor Bai, what’s wrong?”

Bai Ruozhu’s eyebrows were tightly furrowed together. Xiuxiu’s plague had worsened, moving into the middle stage, and she could no longer stay with those in the early stage.

She should have known, Xiuxiu being a child with a delicate constitution, it would be difficult for her to recover from the early stage. But to face this series of calamities at this time was indeed too much to bear.

Before she could speak, Sun Jia exclaimed with surprise, ”Oh my god, her plague has transformed!”

Bai Ruozhu didn’t intend to hide Xiuxiu’s condition; she was just hesitant, but once Sun Jia voiced it out, she couldn’t treat Xiuxiu with any special exceptions.

”She has to be moved here. Sigh, her emotions have negatively affected her condition,” Bai Ruozhu sighed and instructed someone to arrange a more comfortable bed for Xiuxiu.

After coming out of the severe illness area, she told Jiang Yichun, ”Tonight, we must catch that internal spy!”

Jiang Yichun rubbed her furrowed brow, saying, ”I’ve already set the trap; you don’t need to worry. You’ve been too tired during the day; you should get a good night’s sleep tonight.”

”It’s fine, I’m healthy. I want to check things out tonight,” Bai Ruozhu insisted without yielding.

Come nightfall, Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun hid in a dark corner, along with others like Jianqi whom they’d deployed. If anyone made any suspicious move, they wouldn’t escape their vigilance.

After the hour of zi, activity indeed began to stir in the severe illness area.

Jiang Yichun placed a hand on Bai Ruozhu’s shoulder, communicating quietly with her, ”Don’t rush, let’s wait and see.”

The one moving was a middle-aged man, who seemed to be called Liu San. Since he was assigned a number, Bai Ruozhu hadn’t paid much attention to his real name.

They watched as Liu San stealthily approached a woman, nudged her, and whispered lowly, ”Chrysanthemum, wake up.”

Bai Ruozhu almost burst out laughing; she remembered that woman was a widow, everyone called her ”Mrs. Ding,” but she had no idea her maiden name was actually ”Chrysanthemum”...

When Mrs. Ding was shaken awake, she immediately wrapped her arms around Liu San’s neck, her eyes hazy as she murmered, ”My foe, why are you coming to find me again?”

Liu San chuckled softly, ”What do you think?”

After that, he pulled Mrs. Ding up and headed towards the deserted backyard bushes. Soon, the two burrowed into the thicket, and noises of undressing rustled through the air.

Bai Ruozhu’s mouth twitched, they were on a mission to catch a spy late at night and stumbled upon two wild lovebirds? Was it that ancient people were more open? Why did she always happen to encounter these situations? Last time it was Fu Yiyi and that masked man, and now, two patients.

”That man is an old bachelor, and the woman is a widow; they’re quite a match,” Jiang Yichun murmured into her ear, his breath tickling her earlobe.

With someone looking out for the pair of wild lovebirds, there was no telling if the spy would show up, yet they couldn’t completely let their guard down. Who knew if they were just a smokescreen?

Bai Ruozhu squatted and continued to keep watch, but her eyelids were fighting a battle of their own; she was truly exhausted these past few days.

In the end, Liu San and Mrs. Ding both returned to their places to sleep without any other disturbances, and Bai Ruozhu couldn’t hold on any longer, her eyelids completely closed.

She knew she had fallen asleep, and shouldn’t have while on a stakeout, but once the drowsiness hit, there was no stopping it.

When she woke up again, she found herself lying in a bed inside the house, almost believing that everything from the night before was just a dream.

Hearing her stirring, Jiang Yichun came in with hot water, ”Don’t move, let me wipe your face.”

”I can do it myself,” Bai Ruozhu said somewhat embarrassed, sticking out her tongue, ”I fell asleep while squatting there last night.”

Jiang Yichun’s lips curled into a smile, ”Yes, and drooled all over the place.”

”Ah? How is that possible!” Bai Ruozhu exclaimed. It was already incredible that she could fall asleep while squatting, how could she have drooled too?

”Why would I lie to you? If you don’t believe me, go check the spot from last night and see if your drool hasn’t drowned a patch of grass,” Jiang Yichun said, ignoring her protest, and wiped her face and hands with a towel. Although his face wore a smile, his eyes were filled with deep concern.

Bai Ruozhu’s mouth twitched, as if she would flood a patch of grass. Whether it was true or false, she was not going to believe it; she wouldn’t do something so embarrassing.

”By the way, what happened afterwards? Did you find anything?” Bai Ruozhu hurriedly asked, almost neglecting the real issue.

”Nothing stirred the whole night, nor did anyone’s condition worsen, it’s not clear if the other side knows we’re onto them and has stopped acting for the time being,” Jiang Yichun replied.

Bai Ruozhu sighed, somewhat petulant, ”We’ll just have to keep searching, it would be ridiculous if so many dark guards couldn’t outwit one spy.”

He nodded, and after he was done wiping, he brought her a bowl of hot porridge as if he was taking care of a patient, which left Bai Ruozhu with a baffled expression, ”I’m not sick, what are you doing?”

”You’re tired. By taking care of you, you can save some energy,” Jiang Yichun smiled in a somewhat naive way, like a child presenting a treasure.

”How much energy does it take to drink a bowl of porridge?” Bai Ruozhu muttered under her breath, yet inside she was feeling delighted; her man was truly considerate.
