Chapter 1248: Chapter 1250: Bring an Old Friend_1

Bai Ruozhu found an excuse to avoid the situation, going to look for Jiang Yichun and said directly, ”We must find that internal traitor.”

Jiang Yichun’s eyes darkened, ”Don’t worry, everything has been arranged. As long as he takes action tonight, we will definitely catch him.”

At that moment, Zhou Shu’s voice came from outside again. However, today, he did not sound as panicked as the day before.

”Doctor Bai, three more patients have been discovered!”

Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun exchanged glances. Bai Ruozhu curled her lip, ”If it weren’t for Zhou Shu being the Emperor’s confidant, I would suspect him of being the traitor, always bringing bad news.”

Jiang Yichun’s mouth twitched slightly, seeing her making jokes, he also felt somewhat relieved.

The two headed towards the door. Among the three who were brought in today, there were two women and a man; the man was carried in, filthy, with both women avoiding him from afar.

”These two women came to report on their own when they noticed the rash, while this man is a beggar who has been unconscious the whole time. It was another kind-hearted beggar who took care of him who noticed the rash and reported it,” Zhou Shu explained. Then he said to the two women, ”This is Doctor Bai, the Divine Doctor sent by the Imperial Court. With her treating you, you will definitely get better.”

The two women looked at Bai Ruozhu, who was even younger than them, with some disbelief, but they still bowed to Bai Ruozhu out of respect.

Bai Ruozhu saw that the two women were in the initial stages, so she had them sent to where those in the initial stages were kept. Then she turned her attention to the unconscious beggar.

This man was unconscious due to some illness, and if he had other issues, he had to be isolated from the rest.

The beggar was dirty and smelly, with the two people carrying the stretcher turning their heads to avoid the stench, fearing it would suffocate them. However, they saw the Divine Doctor sent by the Imperial Court walk straight to the beggar, not minding the filth, lifting the beggar’s sleeves to check for rashes, and even taking his pulse.

From the bottom of their hearts, they began to admire her, thinking, ”The healer’s heart must be like this.” They felt deeply ashamed for despising their patients.

The beggar’s condition was not serious; it was just the initial stage, but his Qi Blood was stagnant, and he had suffered severe internal injuries.

His face was almost unrecognizable under the dirt, but Bai Ruozhu looked carefully and discovered rashes hidden underneath the grime.

She then examined the beggar’s eyes, and suddenly, her face showed an odd expression. Jiang Yichun knew her best, and seeing her like this, he couldn’t help but worry.

”Isolate this man for now, put him in a separate room, and we’ll see after observation,” Bai Ruozhu said gravely. But no one saw that her hand hidden in her sleeve was tightly clenched and trembling slightly.

The quarantine zone’s workers took over to carry the beggar. Bai Ruozhu followed along, and Jiang Yichun caught up from behind, quietly holding her hand.

Her palm was slightly damp and still trembling, something others might not notice, but he knew all too well.

Bai Ruozhu’s eyes reddened slightly as she called out quietly, ”Achun.”

”It’s okay, I’m here with you,” he thought he had discovered a major problem and comforted her softly.

Bai Ruozhu smiled at him and shook her head gently, then secretly wrote two words in his palm, hidden within the sleeves of their clothes: Tu Bai.

Jiang Yichun was also taken aback, but he quickly concealed the surprise in his eyes, behaving as if nothing had happened. However, a storm of emotions was raging in his heart, and he understood Bai Ruozhu’s intention.

Tu Bai had mysteriously disappeared, only to be found in this small town, unconscious. The town had suddenly been struck by a plague, and there was a traitor hurting people in the quarantine zone they were in—a traitor whose method of harming others left no trace of murder, making it look like a natural death from sickness. All these incidents intertwined, creating a chaotic situation that required cautious handling.

”You two, step back, and take good care of the poisoning. This beggar has contracted a very strange contagious disease that might be a transformation of the plague. For now, it is difficult to treat, so you must be very careful,” Bai Ruozhu whispered to the two men carrying Tu Bai. She appeared to be concealing the news and even rewarded them with some broken silver to keep silent.

The two men ran off to disinfect themselves, trembling with fear—one of them nearly washed his hands raw in fear of catching the disease. Their actions soon drew the attention of others, and for a long period afterward, almost no one dared to approach the room where Tu Bai was, which fit Bai Ruozhu’s intentions perfectly.

Bai Ruozhu closed the door and pulled Jiang Yichun to take a look. Getting closer, Jiang Yichun was able to discern the traces of the old Tu Bai on that dirt-covered face with a tangled beard and messy hair.

Jiang Yichun also possessed medical expertise and understood at a glance that Tu Bai had suffered internal injuries. He probed with his inner strength and his expression quickly turned grave.

”His internal injuries are severe, the meridians are shattered. I’m afraid even if he awakens, he will be disabled,” Jiang Yichun said reluctantly. Although he was a cold person, on their journey through Jiangnan, they had formed a sort of comradeship between them.

”Not necessarily. Even if he can’t practice martial arts anymore, I’ll make sure he’s whole in body. Otherwise, how can I face Tu Ying?” Bai Ruozhu said with a sob catching in her throat. Even if he could recover fully, Tu Bai would no longer be able to be a general.

Jiang Yichun put an arm around her shoulder, ”Don’t worry, there will always be a way.”

Bai Ruozhu sniffled, ”If there was a way, I would’ve already cured the severe injury in your right arm’s meridians, so you wouldn’t have to always use your left hand for swordplay.” But Tu Bai had all his meridians shattered, which was an incredibly difficult problem to solve.

”Let’s first find a way to wake him up and ask what happened,” Bai Ruozhu said after taking a deep breath.

With such severe internal injuries, she felt somewhat powerless; after all, her own inner strength was limited. She could only slowly adjust with medicinal treatment, or Jiang Yichun could use his inner strength to help Tu Bai gradually clear his meridians. However, this would require time, especially since Tu Bai’s injuries were even graver than Chu Hai’s prior wounds.

Both of them had a lot of matters to deal with and couldn’t afford to watch over Tu Bai all day. After some discussion, they decided to entrust Tu Bai’s care to Chu Hai, who was much safer than him constantly going out to care for the many plague patients. Chu Hai had also been to Jiangnan with them and had met Tu Bai, so he was considered a trustworthy person.

In addition, Chu Hai had been learning the art of detoxification. Although his medical skills were somewhat lacking, he was at least as competent as an average doctor.

Chu Hai was quickly summoned. He was very surprised after learning it was Tu Bai, and Bai Ruozhu spoke seriously to him: ”You must not let anyone know his identity. Later I will prepare some medicine to alter his appearance. If anyone asks why you are taking care of him, just say you had the plague before and I cured you. Those who have recovered have resistance to the plague, which is why you are not afraid of being infected.”

Chu Hai nodded, ”Alright, I understand.”

Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun then left the quarantine zone. They had been there for three days. On both the second and third days, new cases were brought in—there were problems no matter how you looked at it. Jiang Yichun had his men inspect all areas without finding anything, so he planned to take Bai Ruozhu around to investigate, fearing some poison he had never seen before was at play.
