Chapter 1219: Chapter 1221 Mainly to Protect My Lady_1

The Emperor furrowed his brows, ”How can you ensure that the person you bring back will not die from the long and bumpy journey? What if she dies? What about Diao Bin then?”

Chu Hai and Diao Yao’s faces both turned slightly unsightly. When the Emperor mentioned their mother, he spoke as if she was not a person but rather an animal to be fetched that must not die, his only concern being for Diao Bin’s safety.

”I think the Saintess has been hidden by her master. Just because there have been no issues over the years doesn’t mean no one has tried to harm her. But, we will inevitably draw the attention of various factions from the Western Regions. What if someone strikes then? I think she will be better protected in Danliang Country,” Bai Ruozhu inquired.

The Empress Dowager looked at the Emperor, ”Ruozhu makes sense. It’s still safer to bring her back. If something happens when she’s outside, we can do nothing but watch helplessly.”

The Emperor was silent for a while, then looked at Bai Ruozhu again and asked, ”Can you guarantee that she will not succumb to the poison on the way?”

”I cannot guarantee that we will not encounter an assassination attempt on the way, this matter is naturally not for me to decide alone. However, I can guarantee that the Saintess’s Reincarnation Poison will not flare up and lead to her death during the journey,” Bai Ruozhu thought for a moment before answering.

”Hmph, you need not worry about her safety; I will personally send someone to escort her all the way. Just remember what you just said,” the Emperor snorted coldly.

Bai Ruozhu wanted to say she didn’t want to go at all, but how could she defy an Imperial Decree? What right did she have to refuse?

”I and Diao Yao will lead the way for you,” Chu Hai spoke up.

”No need, just you lead the way. Diao Yao can stay in the Palace and keep Diao Bin company,” the Emperor said indifferently.

Chu Hai’s face showed dissatisfaction, ”Are you afraid that we might run away and insist on keeping Diao Yao as a hostage? No matter what you say, she is your sister!”

The Emperor slapped his palm onto the table beside him, ”Who gave you the audacity to raise your voice at me? I have only one sister, Diao Bin. Others are irrelevant to me. If she wants to be a princess of Danliang, that’s not impossible, but is she prepared to be sent overseas for a marriage alliance?”

Diao Yao shook her head vigorously, ”Brother, don’t say anymore. I am nobody’s sister. I only have you as a brother. I’ll just stay here and accompany Sister Diao Bin. You don’t have to worry about me.”

Bai Ruozhu stepped back a bit, what lay ahead was a matter of the Royal Family, and she truly did not wish to get involved.

Fortunately, the Empress Dowager saw her intention and told her to go down with Ning Yu first to attend to the affairs of the Astrology Tower.

The two returned to the Astrology Tower, where Ning Yu led Bai Ruozhu to the library, allowing her to read the books there.

”My master didn’t teach you much in half a day, so you’ll have to pick up some books and learn on your own. Or, if there’s something you want to learn but don’t understand, you can come and ask me,” Ning Yu said.

Bai Ruozhu nodded, ”Okay, thank you in advance.”

She found a book on Qimen Dunjia and wanted to learn some skills for breaking arrays. After reading for a while, she realized from the corner of her eye that Ning Yu was still standing beside her, seemingly hesitating about something.

It was her excitement at seeing so many books that made her neglect to notice Ning Yu’s hidden worries.

”What’s the matter?” Bai Ruozhu asked, closing the book.

”The Emperor is likely to send me to the Western Regions as well, it’s just...” Ning Yu started to say but then swallowed the rest of his words.

”It’s just that you’re worried about Diao Bin and don’t want to leave, right?” Bai Ruozhu teased with a smile as Ning Yu’s face turned red all the way to the nape of his neck.

”I, I’m worried that if her curse changes unexpectedly, even if I return from the Western Regions, it would be a wasted trip. Someone being able to induce Diao Yao’s curse to flare up ahead of time doesn’t mean they can’t do it again,” Ning Yu spoke.

Bai Ruozhu thought about it and realized it made sense. Without Ning Yu going, if they encountered someone skilled in Curses or Qimen Dunjia, Saintess Fen Wan might not be able to return.

”If you really don’t want to go, I will try my best to persuade the Emperor, but it doesn’t mean I can change his decision. If you pay attention, you will notice that the Emperor seems quite displeased with me,” Bai Ruozhu said with a wry smile.

Ning Yu looked somewhat dejected. He had thought that the Empress Dowager quite liked Bai Ruozhu and perhaps Bai Ruozhu could have some influence. However, after Bai Ruozhu’s reminder, he realized that the Emperor indeed didn’t like Bai Ruozhu much.

Bai Ruozhu stopped paying attention to Ning Yu and continued reading her book. It was just a pity that the books from the Astrology Tower couldn’t be taken out; otherwise, she really wanted to take several books home to study in depth.

It wasn’t until dusk fell that she reluctantly put down the book and left the Astrology Tower to return to the Jiang Residence.

Jiang Yichun was already waiting in the small courtyard. He took her hand and said, ”Come on, it’s time to go to the Main Courtyard for dinner.”

”Okay,” she moved closer to him and said, ”The Emperor wants me to go to the Western Regions to ensure that the poison within Saintess Fen Wan doesn’t act up and to bring her back to the Capital City.”

”I know,” Jiang Yichun smiled.

Bai Ruozhu turned her head to look at his profile. He was clearly a man but had such demonically beautiful features. If it weren’t for his constant icy demeanor, it would be hard for anyone to take their eyes off him.

However, he was far from cold when facing her; instead, he was either throwing coquettish glances or giving electric shocks. Despite already having a child, he still managed to bewitch her completely.

The corner of his mouth lifted slightly, and he seemed to be in a good mood. Bai Ruozhu felt puzzled. He wasn’t angry or anxious at all. Was this really because he wanted to send her out of the Capital City to avoid disaster?

But she soon realized what was happening and widened her eyes. ”Don’t tell me the Emperor is assigning you to lead the team, responsible for the Saintess’s safety?”

He nodded slightly, ”Of course, but most importantly, to protect my wife.”

Bai Ruozhu let out an ’oh’, startling a maid of the Jiang Family nearby who was anxious about what might have happened to Bai Ruozhu.

”This Emperor is really laying a trap for us. I just said I would only take care of whether the Saintess gets poisoned, not her safety. The Emperor agreed so readily because he had already planned this out for both of us! That’s despicable!” Bai Ruozhu ground her back teeth as she spoke. She initially only worried about the poison affecting the Saintess, but now that her man was in charge of protecting the Saintess’s safety, how could she not worry?

Darn it, the Emperor is nothing but a sly, stingy, and utterly disgraceful fox!

Jiang Yichun, however, wrapped his arms around her shoulders and said with a suppressed laugh, ”Keep your voice down, cursing the Emperor is a grave offense, but I have already cursed him for you in person.”

On hearing this, Bai Ruozhu also laughed, ”Well scolded!”

”If I weren’t leading the team to escort her, I wouldn’t feel at ease letting you go,” he tightened his embrace on her shoulders.

Bai Ruozhu felt warmth in her heart at his words but soon became worried again. ”What about our Little Dengdeng? It’s not safe to take him with us, but leaving him behind is just too worrying, sigh.”

Jiang Yichun sighed along with Bai Ruozhu, ”We’ll have to leave him with my parents. We’ll just try to come back as soon as possible.”

Bai Ruozhu thought it over and felt that was the only option. The little one wouldn’t be able to handle the long journey either.

As they talked, they arrived at the Main Courtyard. Unexpectedly, as they entered the room, they saw Elder Jiang Ge sitting at the head of the table. This was the first time that Elder Jiang Ge had joined the family for a meal since they returned to the Jiang Residence.
