Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1231: Chapter 1233 Half for Each Family_1

Bai Ruozhu, having heard this, didn’t get angry or anxious. Instead, she just smiled and said, ”Let them buy if they want. Not knowing how to grow medicine, they will end up losing money just like Su Yongnian.”

Once she had finished speaking, the corner of her mouth quirked upwards, ”However, we can’t let the Yang Family off too easily. Raise the price a bit before letting go.”

Sui Ge was somewhat puzzled, thinking to himself, the master had made a big fuss and even went to the North Mountain to have a look. Why give up so easily? Shouldn’t we swallow this grievance so readily?

”Then...” Sui Ge pondered for a moment, ”Your subordinate will follow your orders.”

Bai Ruozhu smiled and gave Sui Ge some other instructions before leaving Hua Xiangrong.

Show weakness where you are strong, and strength where you are weak. Since the Yang Family came looking for trouble, she didn’t mind setting a trap for them. She refused to believe that the Yang Family had so much money that they wouldn’t mind burning it without feeling the pinch.

Of course, if it weren’t for those two unexpected windfalls, she might have been vexed by the Yang Family. But now, she really couldn’t care less. Even if she truly didn’t get anything, the Yang Family wouldn’t gain any advantage either.

Until Bai Ruozhu left, Sui Ge still felt muddled. He even suspected that there was some problem with those medicine fields, which was why his master didn’t care whether she got them or not.

If Sui Ge could harbor such suspicions, naturally the Yang Family could too. After Sui Ge raised the price a little, he quickly showed an inclination to give up and not compete with the Yang Family, which actually started to worry Madam Yang.

Bai Ruozhu, on her part, was no longer concerned with the medicine fields at all. She took some time to talk with her second brother.

”Second Brother, we will be leaving in a while. Since it’s a secret edict, I dare not tell our parents before the official decree arrives,” Bai Ruozhu said.

Bai Zepei’s expression changed, ”It sounds rather troublesome. This wouldn’t be related to the princess, would it?”

A twitch appeared at the corner of Bai Ruozhu’s mouth, her second brother was too demonically insightful. She hadn’t said much, yet he had guessed it.

”Don’t deny it. When you entered the capital, she followed all the way. There must be some issue,” Bai Zepei shook his head, ”It’s a pity Second Brother can’t be of much assistance to you now.”

”Second Brother, how can you not be of help? The Imperial Examination is just ahead. We’re all waiting for you to achieve a high rank and bring glory to our family. It’s just a pity that I probably won’t be able to make it back in time,” Bai Ruozhu said with a hint of guilt. She felt she was not fulfilling her duties as a sister by not being there for her brother during such an important moment.

Bai Zepei looked at her and couldn’t help but raise his hand to ruffle her hair, his expression softened, ”No worries. By the time you return, Second Brother might already be an official.”

Bai Ruozhu smiled, ”That’s for sure. Let me congratulate Second Brother in advance for securing a top position, and... for the wedding celebrations...” Her mouth ran on autopilot, listing the two greatest joys in life.

”What nonsense are you talking about?” Bai Zepei scolded with a straight face. Where was he supposed to go for wedding celebrations? He hadn’t even discussed marriage.

Bai Ruozhu laughed sheepishly, ”Mother is getting anxious. After your name appears on the top rankings, it will be time to find a suitable girl in the capital for you.”

”Alright,” Bai Zepei maintained a faint smile on his face.

Bai Ruozhu was taken aback. Yo, why had Second Brother agreed so readily this time? He had been so reluctant to marry before. Perhaps he really meant what he said before, to consider marriage only after securing his career. Now that he was confident, he naturally didn’t object to the idea of marriage.

That’s how she analyzed it. Thinking that her mother would definitely be happy to know this, Bai Ruozhu cheerfully bade her second brother farewell and went to share the good news with her parents.

”Oh, that’s wonderful, I’ll have the matchmaker come over tomorrow and take a good look at the Misses in the capital.” Lin Pinger was an impetuous person, ready to act on her words immediately, but it was Bai Ruozhu who hastily held her back.

”Mother, with the Imperial Examination approaching for my second brother, let’s not distract him. Besides, once he makes it to the top of the honor roll, there will certainly be matchmakers breaking down our door.” Bai Ruozhu said.

Upon hearing this, Lin Pinger slapped her head, ”Ruozhu thinks of everything. We really should not hurry. We’ll talk about it later.”

Even so, Lin Pinger was still delighted and had already started to make arrangements for her second son’s betrothal gifts.

Seeing her parents happy, Bai Ruozhu herself felt much more at ease. After greeting her parents, she went to the palace.

The Empress Dowager was very pleased to see Bai Ruozhu and inquired about her whereabouts over the past few days. Bai Ruozhu truthfully answered that she went to North Mountain to see the medicine field she wanted to buy, but she did not mention the betrayal she encountered on the way.

”Medicine field? How come I’ve heard that the wife of the Yang Family recently wants to buy a big patch of medicine fields?” The Empress Dowager asked, somewhat surprised.

Bai Ruozhu let out a light chuckle, ”It’s the one I was interested in, but now she’s raising the price to buy it, so naturally I can’t compete with her.”

The Empress Dowager frowned upon hearing this, ”That won’t do, wouldn’t that mean your trip was in vain? I’ll speak to the Emperor about this. The Yang Family can’t keep acting so arrogantly.”

”I truly wouldn’t want to trouble the Empress Dowager. If I’m meant to have the medicine field, then it will be mine. If not, it won’t affect my profits, so let nature take its course,” Bai Ruozhu replied with a smile.

The Empress Dowager sighed after hearing this, ”You are such a sensible child. If everyone were like you, there wouldn’t be so many troubles.”

Bai Ruozhu chuckled to herself - she wasn’t really being modest or letting the Yang Family have their way. She genuinely didn’t care, but of course, even if she said that out loud, the Empress Dowager wouldn’t believe her and would only assume she didn’t want to put the Empress Dowager in a difficult position.

Later, Bai Ruozhu visited Consort Yue and Princess Diao Bin before leaving the palace and returning to the Jiang Residence.

Unexpectedly, on the second day, the Emperor summoned Jiang Yichun and Yang Tianhua to the Imperial Study Room.

”I hear that Su Yongnian is selling a large medicine field, and that there has been some conflict between your two families over it?” The Emperor asked straightforwardly.

Yang Tianhua, shrewd and calculating, spoke first: ”All household affairs are managed by my wife. It seems Su Yongnian had approached her some time ago, and it was only later that Officer Jiang showed interest in buying it.”

Jiang Yichun didn’t argue, merely stating indifferently: ”My wife’s medical skills are quite good, and she’s well-versed in pharmacology, which is why she was interested in taking over that medicine field. However, as of yesterday, she mentioned she would not contend with the Yang Family for it.”

Yang Tianhua’s eyes shifted around because Bai Ruozhu had given up too quickly, which made him and his wife feel a bit suspicious. Could there be something wrong with that medicine field?

After all, Yang Tianhua and his wife had not personally visited North Mountain, although they had sent a steward there, but they also felt that the steward might not be as proficient in evaluating medicine fields as Bai Ruozhu, so last night Yang Tianhua even suspected that they might lose money on the field. However, his wife said that at this point, they couldn’t lose face, could they?

The Emperor glanced at the two men and said coolly, ”You are both pillars of the Imperial Court, and I would not like to see you develop a rift over a matter of medicine fields. Here’s what I’ll do: I understand that Su Yongnian’s field is not one plot, but has been divided into two. The northern plot shall go to Officer Jiang, and the southern plot to Officer Yang, how about that?”

Before Yang Tianhua could speak, the Emperor continued, ”Perhaps Officer Yang would like to choose a plot for himself. I’m opening this discussion hoping you two can live in harmony. Don’t let my good intentions be in vain.”

If it weren’t for the doubts from the previous day, with Yang Tianhua’s nature, he would definitely not have conceded. It wouldn’t have been the first time he had snubbed the Emperor. But now, the Emperor’s proposal conveniently offered him an out.
