Chapter 16: Chapter 12 Twisting Fate

”Hello, who is this?”

”Hi, are you a doctor from Mo’en Hospital?”

”Hmm? You’ve got the wrong number, I don’t work at Mo’en Hospital, and I’m not a doctor.”

The call was very short. Wen Xishu squinted, finding the situation becoming interesting.

After leaving the old building, he borrowed a phone from a passerby and made a call.

This number was left by Jack, regarding that doctor. But he couldn’t reach the doctor; it was a wrong number.

”Jack has no reason to lie to me. That doesn’t fit his character. So, it looks like there’s indeed something wrong with this doctor.”

Wen Xishu looked into the distance. The next place he was heading to was the Mo’en City Fourth Nursing Home.

Jack’s mother was in this nursing home.

As if thinking of something, he suddenly quickened his pace from a slow walk to a sprint.

...

Mo’en City, the old building in the slums.

Wen Xishu’s appearance did not delay Jack’s timing for doing certain things.

Unless there was a major shift in logic and guidance, the people in Desire Tower would try to stick to their original rhythms and do what they were supposed to do.

That was their fate.

After Wen Xishu left, Jack stopped daydreaming. He decided to go upstairs to ease relations with Remian.

At the end of his life, Jack hoped to be remembered as a good person by everyone.

But eventually, he stood at the staircase and heard Remian’s call to Yulia.

Those hurtful words shattered Jack’s self-deception completely.

Then, as he walked towards his room, he happened to overhear his ”friend” Anderson’s speech about friendship.

Just before his death, what he thought was important in life started to fall apart prematurely.

Jack’s silent tears fell on the stairs of the corridor.

This world was so terrible. Suddenly, he really wanted to see Jennifer.

That was probably the only way to give him strength and see something beautiful. He longed to hear Jennifer’s happy, childlike laughter.

But at this moment, Jack’s original behavioral logic changed.

Because he remembered the mysterious man had given him an invitation card.

”Open it when you feel you can no longer endure the pain and want to see Jennifer.”

He thought he would never use it, but he did not expect the man to foresee everything.

Jack now felt the overwhelming pain.

He opened the invitation card.

”Jack, my friend. When you decide to open this, I think you’ve realized you’ve been deceiving yourself.”

”There are many disgusting and awful guys in this world. Being a good person is not wrong, but you shouldn’t deceive yourself into believing in inherently bad people.”

”You don’t need to know how I knew you were crying silently in the hallway. I also know you really want to see Jennifer at this time.”

”Please don’t worry, Jennifer is a good child. She will attend your performance, but not now.”

”She is also not the only one in your life worth inviting. Your mother is still waiting for you. Why not go see her first?”

”Also, you won’t die of stomach cancer; you never had stomach cancer.”

”On the contrary, in the upcoming disastrous chaos that frightens everyone, you will be luckier than most.”

”If you want to know everything, put aside your despair for now and go see your mother.”

...

The distance between the nursing home and the old building wasn’t far, and Wen Xishu was running at full speed all the way.

He was racing against someone.

The formula for constructing villains in this world was simple: a terrible and malignant survival environment, and a little bit of love.

Use that little bit of love to keep people from giving up on life and hope in a bad environment.

Then, destroy that love, making them realize they never possessed love. In this way, an evil villain is created.

Wen Xishu had already received confirmation from Jack; Jack’s evolution was inevitable, unrelated to his experiences.

At the same time, he discovered signs that Jack’s life was orchestrated.

Remian’s betrayal, Anderson’s lies, Yulia’s disgust, all these made sense.

But then Jack’s mother also had an accident and passed away.

All of this happened in one day. These events were too coincidental and tightly knit. Combined, it was like a potent drug to change human nature.

When Wen Xishu heard about the doctor, he wondered how the doctor diagnosed Jack with stomach cancer.

Then he verified that the doctor was likely a fake.

So, the many coincidences in Jack’s day were possibly also designed.

Therefore, Jack becoming a monster and destroying everything tied to Jennifer could also be designed.

The key to saving Jennifer was, in fact, to save Jack.

”In Deceit Tower, the nursing home staff said on the phone that Jack’s mother met with an accident.”

”Accident means the elderly did not die naturally. Reasonable speculation would be that this was a murder.”

”There is someone hiding in the dark, trying to destroy Jack.”

”I have to retract my earlier description of Desire Tower; this place is as interesting as Deceit Tower.”

...

Mo’en City Fourth Nursing Home.

Jack’s mother was mostly in a state of daze because no doctor had been willing to take care of her for a while.

This is typical in nursing homes; in many of them, medical staff treat the elderly casually. The needier the elderly, the less they are liked.

Elderly yearning for attention gradually become obedient and dazed.

If children are filial or capable, who would send their parents to a nursing home?

But Jack’s work often kept him out day and night, leaving him no choice but to send his mother to a nursing home.

Some elderly can influence medical staff to be more attentive by casually revealing their savings.

But Jack’s mother obviously did not fall into this category.

Jack was poor. Even though he paid the nursing home fees and some extras, he couldn’t change his mother’s plight.

However, today, Jack’s mother was no longer alone.

A kindly looking young doctor surprisingly was willing to push her wheelchair and take her out for a walk.

But when the elevator she entered kept ascending higher and higher floors...

She began to get scared.

It suddenly occurred to her that she had never seen this doctor before.

When the elevator reached the 37th floor, the top of the building, she asked:

”Doc...Doctor, why are we here?”

”For joy. And glorious evolution, madam,” the doctor smiled strangely.

”I...I don’t understand.”

The ”doctor” gently pressed on the elderly woman’s shoulders:

”Let me explain then. You are Jack’s mother, also Jack’s nourishment. Now, it’s time for you to contribute.”

”The world is changing, and Jack is one of those who can change the world.”

”But his character hinders his destiny. He needs a little help, and I need a little joy.”

The wheelchair moved closer to the edge of the rooftop.

”Your fall will contribute to his rise. That’s the meaning of motherly love. It’s really touching, isn’t it?”

The ”doctor” spoke as if telling a bedtime story to a child.

His actions, however, terrified Jack’s mother. She struggled and waved her hands desperately.

The ”doctor” pushed the wheelchair towards the edge of the rooftop, accelerating. Then he let go, allowing the wheelchair to glide toward the edge, leading to a downfall.

His smile became brilliant, as if he was enjoying a fine comedy.

But just then, a tremendous force suddenly grabbed him.

His lab coat was torn apart by the sheer strength.

The doctor’s body paused. Next, a hand grasped his neck and violently pulled him backward.

”I like your way of curing diseases, but unfortunately, you picked the wrong patient.”

Chasing, dragging, and then stabilizing the wheelchair—all done in one go.

For Wen Xishu, who spent years living on the edge of death and was proficient in extreme sports, the previous moves were simple.

The ”doctor” sat on the ground, looking at the sudden appearance of Wen Xishu, his face showing shock.

The doctor couldn’t believe someone would come to stop him at this critical point.

He had done this kind of thing many times, so how could there be a mishap now?

Interestingly, faced with Wen Xishu’s violent behavior, the doctor, although looking tall and robust, chose not to fight back.

He even seemed somewhat flustered looking at Wen Xishu.

Wen Xishu’s actions undoubtedly violated the ”no violence” rule of Desire Tower.

But the game rules only constrained the Bunker People, the players, not the Three Tower People.

Though this doctor wasn’t a player, he was special and didn’t count as an ordinary Three Tower Person.

Wen Xishu also noticed that the doctor didn’t show any anger.

A mastermind who could manipulate Jack’s fate yet faced violence with such an expression.

This made him very intrigued. It seemed that Desire Tower had some unexpected existences.
