Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

A group of Gold Ability Users were diligently learning, surrounding Xie Ning and following her lead in making small golden spheres.

Lin Yiyi was squeezed to the outside by the crowd, unable to get in at all.

Naturally, she also couldn’t see the parrot she so coveted.

”Yiyi.” Xu Yu frowned, pulling her back a few steps. ”How are you now? What just happened?”

There was no way Lin Yiyi could tell Xu Yu that her taming attempt had failed and that her spirit world had nearly been shattered by a backlash from the spiritual-type mutated bird.

If she said that, she would surely be looked down upon by everyone in the Swift Leopard Team.

Though Lin Yiyi was young, she was extremely cunning. She would never say anything that put her at a disadvantage.

”Ms. Xu Yu, I’m fine. You don’t need to worry about me.” Lin Yiyi flashed an innocent smile, nodding slightly at Xu Yu. ”I think I was just too eager a moment ago, and my head was suddenly hit with a dull ache.”

Hearing this, Xu Yu’s expression changed drastically. ”A dull ache? Could it have been a Spiritual Attack from someone with ill intentions?”

”I don’t think so.” Lin Yiyi shook her head, a look of surprise on her face. ”Ms. Xu Yu, are you suspecting Captain Xie? Captain Xie and I just had a little squabble. A grown-up like her wouldn’t resort to such a dirty trick on a child like me, would she?”

The moment Xu Yu heard this, she exploded like a lit firecracker. ”What do you mean, ’wouldn’t’? Are you stupid, kid? Have you already forgotten how she targeted you back at the cotton workshop?”

Lin Yiyi immediately lowered her head, a look of profound guilt on her face. ”That’s because I was with my former captain’s group, and we did many things wrong.”

”Even though I was forced, a wrong is still a wrong. It’s only natural that Captain Xie doesn’t want to forgive me.”

”That was so long ago.” Xu Yu took the girl’s hand, her words rattling off like a string of firecrackers. ”That Xie Ning is such a petty person.”

”What’s she playing at, holding a grudge over something that happened so long ago?”

With a grim expression, Zhuang Lei walked to Xu Yu’s side. ”Alright, stop making a scene.”

Xie Ning’s prestige in the base was too high now. Picking a direct fight with her would only hurt the Swift Leopard Team; it wasn’t a wise move.

”How am I ’making a scene’?” Xu Yu, who had a hair-trigger temper, refused to listen to a word Zhuang Lei said.

They had all come from West City and Su City together, and the fact that Xie Ning was doing so well for herself filled her with a visceral discomfort.

The more Zhuang Lei told her to stop, the more her stubbornness flared, and the more she refused to back down.

”A Sixth-rank Superpower User fighting a child over a Mutated Bird? There’s no way to justify that, no matter how you spin it!”

”All these people are intimidated by her status as a Sixth-rank Superpower User, too scared to even fart. But I, Xu Yu, dare to speak and act as I please. I’m not afraid of anything.”

Zhuang Jia stood nearby with her arms crossed, sneering sarcastically, ”If you’re so daring, then go fight her for it. Just don’t drag our entire team into it. That would be your own doing, and have nothing to do with the Swift Leopard Team.”

”What did you say?”

”Don’t you get what I’m saying? Xu Yu, from the day you joined the Swift Leopard Team, how many times have you dragged down the team and your teammates? Do you have zero self-awareness? Hah.”

Zhuang Jia’s husband, Luo Yanan, stood by with a cold sneer, showing no intention of stopping her.

There were some things the couple only ever discussed in private, but today, they had finally reached their breaking point.

Xu Yu was like a rat dropping, constantly bobbing in the stew, impossible to throw out.

Goaded by Xu Yu’s glare, Zhuang Jia lost her cool and went on the offensive.

She unloaded on Xu Yu like a machine gun. ”A woman like you? Everyone knows what you’re really after!”

”You coveted that Mutated Bird and wanted it for yourself. But you can’t win against a Sixth-rank Superpower User, so all you can do is run your mouth behind her back and try to drag the entire Swift Leopard Team down with you.”

”So, I, Zhuang Jia, will make this clear. You, Xu Yu, can act up and cause trouble all you want, but my husband, myself, and everyone else—we won’t help you! Not a single one of us! If you want to court death, be my guest! Just don’t drag our whole team down again.”

”Zhuang Jia!”

Zhuang Lei glared angrily at his younger sister and scolded her with a cold expression, ”Is that any way to speak to your sister-in-law?”

”Brother, I’ve been putting up with her out of respect for you. If you don’t put a stop to this now, you’re just going to lead the whole team to its doom.”

”She’s Sixth Rank! Sixth Rank! She could wipe you all out with a single finger.”

”So what if she’s Sixth Rank? Does being Sixth Rank mean she can do whatever she wants and steal from a child?” Xu Yu shrieked, exasperated and furious.

”Steal?” Zhuang Jia’s whole face scrunched up into a mocking grin. Pointing at Xu Yu, she looked at her as if she were a moron. ”Listen up, everyone, just listen to this.”

”Someone tames a Mutated Bird with their bare hands, and you call it ’stealing’? HAHAHAHA! That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard!”

The other members of the Swift Leopard Team looked at Xu Yu as if she had lost her mind.

Xu Yu’s face burned under their stares, and a wave of indignation surged through her.

”What’s that supposed to mean? Zhuang Jia, are you determined to pick a fight with me today? Right here, in public?” Xu Yu gritted her teeth and shoved at Zhuang Jia.

Zhuang Jia’s husband, Luo Yanan, unhesitatingly slapped Xu Yu’s arm away and sneered, ”Who has the time to fight with you? You know perfectly well what kind of person you are.”

”Luo Yanan.” Xu Yu was trembling with rage.

Seeing things were getting out of hand, Lin Yiyi frowned slightly. She tugged on Xu Yu’s arm and coaxed in a soft, small voice, ”Ms. Xu Yu, don’t fight with everyone else over me. It’s all my fault. Stop fighting. Let’s just drop it.”

Tears of rage sprang to Xu Yu’s eyes. ”Brother Lei, am I doing this for myself? I’m doing this so Yiyi can improve her strength, which in turn will improve our team’s overall strength!”

”Stop pretending to be so noble. Everyone knows you and Lin Yiyi are two of a kind, a bitch recognizing her own.” Zhuang Jia, holding nothing back now, let loose with the most scathing insults she could think of.

”Let me tell you something, Xu Yu. Back in the Golden City underground shelter, you were always playing Holy Mother, handing out water and saving people, constantly giving away supplies from the rest of us on the team to feed your ’Great Holy Mother’ complex. And we let it go!”

”After all, saving people is a good deed. So everyone on the team put up with it. We didn’t mind suffering a little; we just chalked it up to indulging your ’Holy Mother’ heart. As long as you didn’t keep stirring up trouble, we could all live in peace.”

”But now, you’ve gone and courted death by picking a fight with a Sixth-rank Superpower User.”

”What? You play the Holy Mother day in and day out, but don’t tell me you actually think you’re the sun that lights up the Earth and that all Earth people have to revolve around you?”

”She’s Sixth Rank! And who the hell do you think you are?”
