Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

’What the hell is the point of explaining things at a time like this? It’s completely meaningless.’

An inexplicable anger also rose in Song You’ai’s heart.

’Look what Xie Xuezheng has driven poor Ningning to!’

’If Kang Yunru hadn’t suddenly shown up and caused all this trouble, Ningning wouldn’t have been provoked into such a sudden fit of rage.’

There had to be a reason, even though Song You’ai still didn’t understand what was going on.

Meanwhile, after having someone quickly carry Kang Yunru away, Wei Zhengtong dragged Xie Xuezheng along, unable to stop complaining. ”Old Xie, what on earth did you do? How did you manage to piss your own daughter off this badly?”

Xie Xuezheng was so anxious he was practically spinning in circles. ”How should I know?”

’What in the world is going on?’

He was a master when it came to biological research.

But trying to figure out what was on his daughter’s mind? That was truly giving him a splitting headache!

To this day, he still couldn’t understand how Kang Yunru had somehow, inexplicably, become his mistress.

’He and Miss Kang’s interactions were strictly professional. There was absolutely nothing else going on!’

”Hey, I don’t mean to criticize you,” Wei Zhengtong leaned in and muttered, ”but you really don’t pay attention to the gossip around the institute, do you?”

”You and Kang Yunru are way too close!”

”And have you really never noticed the passionate way Miss Kang looks at you?”

”How is that possible??” Xie Xuezheng turned to Wei Zhengtong in shock. ”Why are you jumping to wild conclusions, just like Ningning and her mother? Kang Yunru is barely older than my own daughter. How could she possibly have any feelings for me?”

Wei Zhengtong rolled his eyes and smacked him. ”You bookworm. I swear, you’re so buried in your experiments you’ve lost touch with reality! If Kang Yunru really didn’t have feelings for you, why would she scurry over to your wife and cause such a scene?”

”Sir.” Gu Chen strode over, calling out to them from a short distance away.

Xie Xuezheng turned his head and glared daggers at Gu Chen.

’This is the punk who’s brazenly wormed his way into the Old Song Family and has my wife and daughter wrapped around his little finger.’

Gu Chen’s clear, dark eyes met Xie Xuezheng’s resentful gaze, and he smiled politely. ”Sir, I hear that you’ve had people out looking for Aunt Song and Ningning all this time?”

”Then has no one told you, Sir, that for over a year, Ningning and Aunt Song have been right here in the Golden City Base?”

Xie Xuezheng froze, his face darkening as he glared at Gu Chen. ”What are you trying to say, kid?”

Gu Chen just smiled faintly. ”Sir, my meaning is simple. If, for over a year, you haven’t received a single shred of news about Ningning and Aunt Song... then shouldn’t you start investigating the people closest to you?’

Xie Xuezheng was stunned. When he looked up again, the young man gave him a slight nod before turning and leaving quickly.

Wei Zhengtong slapped his thigh. ”Ah, Xiao Gu is right! Xue Zhi, where do you think all this resentment from Ningning comes from? Doesn’t it all stem from that woman, Kang Yunru?”

”Who did you put in charge of the search for the mother and daughter? Could there be a problem there? Kang Yunru, she...”

Wei Zhengtong was still chattering away when he saw Xie Xuezheng suddenly spin around and take off running.

”Hey, Old Xie, where are you running off to so fast? Wait for me.”

「Base Infirmary」

Two young nurses had just hung up an IV drip when they heard a BANG from the doorway.

They turned to look, taken aback. ”Dr. Xie?”

Wei Zhengtong waved his hand at the young nurses, motioning for them to leave.

Xie Xuezheng rushed to the bedside in a few long strides, his sharp gaze fixed on Kang Yunru, who was completely covered in bandages. ”What did you do? What did you do to my daughter??”

Kang Yunru was currently wrapped in bandages from head to toe, with several broken bones in her back.

Suddenly seeing Xie Xuezheng rush up to confront her, she was utterly dumbfounded and stammered, ”Dr... Dr. Xie?”

’Is Dr. Xie asking the wrong question?’

’What does he mean, what did I do to his daughter?’

’Shouldn’t Dr. Xie be asking what heinous things his daughter did to me?’

’Xie Ning beat me half to death, so how could Dr. Xie rush over to question me?’

’Has the world gone completely upside down?!’

”I tasked you with putting out the mission to find my wife and daughter. Did you tamper with it somehow?”

Tears instantly streamed down Kang Yunru’s face.

She gave the man a pitiful look. Her lips quivered as she tried to speak, but for a long moment, not a single sound escaped, as if Xie Ning had beaten her mute.

Xie Xuezheng was seething. ”Why did you go looking for my wife and daughter? I never told you to cause trouble for them.”

”Besides taking matters into your own hands this time, what else have you done?”

”Doctor...” Kang Yunru’s tears flowed freely as she pursed her lips, looking utterly wronged.

”Cat got your tongue?” Xie Xuezheng’s anger flared. ”You went to see Ningning and her mother on your own, making Ningning resent me so much. This is all your fault!”

’If hitting someone weren’t so... unbecoming, Xie Xuezheng would have charged forward and landed a few blows right on Kang Yunru’s head.’

Kang Yunru was wrapped in bandages from head to toe, looking utterly miserable.

But Xie Xuezheng felt not a single shred of pity for her.

’If this woman hadn’t inexplicably gone to see my wife and daughter, how could my daughter have misunderstood me so deeply?’

’It was all her fault. This woman ruined everything!’

”Since when did my family’s private affairs become any business of a mere assistant like you?” Xie Xuezheng bellowed at her before turning and slamming the door with a BOOM.

Wei Zhengtong jumped in surprise. He glanced at Xie Xuezheng storming out like an angry lion, then back at the pitiful-looking Kang Yunru on the bed. He shook his head and sighed helplessly. ”Miss Kang, why did you have to do this?”

Kang Yunru sobbed.

Her mouth and cheeks were so badly swollen from the slaps that it was difficult for her to speak. ”Dr. Wei, it’s not... it wasn’t me, Dr. Wei. I never meant to destroy the relationship between Dr. Xie and his family, I... *sob*...”

”You shouldn’t have gone to see Ningning’s family in the first place,” Wei Zhengtong said, shaking his head. ”In what capacity did you go to them? It was bound to cause a misunderstanding between the mother and daughter, wasn’t it?”

”Now look at the mess you’ve made. You’ve put Old Xie in an impossible position, and he has no idea how he’s supposed to explain his way out of this.”

Kang Yunru was about to lose her mind.

’She was the one beaten into a mummy, so how come everyone was now blaming her?’

’What did she do wrong?’

’Dr. Xie’s daughter is way too violent!’

’She beat me to a pulp, hasn’t even apologized, and now she’s somehow won the sympathy of Dr. Wei and the others?’

’This is insane!’

”Cough, cough cough, COUGH COUGH COUGH.” Kang Yunru coughed nervously, struggling to sit up. ”Dr. Wei, can you help me talk to Dr. Xie? I... I really didn’t mean to.”

”I didn’t expect Miss Xie to react so strongly.”

Wei Zhengtong sighed, gave her a cool look, and left her with a parting shot: ”You brought this upon yourself.” Then he turned and left.

With her heavily bandaged hand, Kang Yunru violently swept a water cup from the nightstand. Her eyes turned sinister as she stared at the door.
