Apocalypse Escape: Day One of Survival

Zhai Ruobai couldn’t help but scoff. ”You must have seen Ningning’s combat footage. That’s why you’re so impatient, isn’t it?”

That much was obvious.

Word of Xie Ning’s battle on the city wall had already spread like wildfire throughout the base; there was no way these people from Country A hadn’t gotten their hands on the video.

”A Sixth-rank Superpower User fought two battles. Doesn’t she need to rest?” Gu Chen smiled slowly, but the look he gave Li Weide was ice-cold.

’These sons of bitches actually think they can trick my girlfriend into going to Country A to join the Global Superpower Academy.’

’What a joke!’

”Besides, the Country C branch of the Global Superpower Academy has also made it clear that they would be delighted to have Ningning join.”

”Of course, Ningning herself doesn’t know about this yet. We’ll find a suitable time to tell her.”

Li Weide smiled benevolently and wagged a finger. ”NO, NO. Don’t you think that’s a bit impersonal? How about this, I’ll give you another piece of news.”

”Besides our A Country Branch, people from the R Country Branch and Y Country Branch also hope to come to your Jingji Base to speak face-to-face with the Sixth-rank Superpower User.”

To be so blatant about poaching, Li Weide really wasn’t afraid of losing face.

Gu Chen smiled back at him. ”Mr. Li Weide, you must be single, right?”

Everyone: ...

A brawny, muscular foreigner beside him flew into a rage. In terribly broken Country C, he demanded, ”Are you calling Mr. Li Weide a dog?”

”No, no.” Li Weide quickly stood up to placate the blockhead, giving an awkward but polite smile. ”When people from Country C say ’single dog,’ it’s mostly a joke. He’s not actually insulting me.”

Gu Chen said expressionlessly, ”’Single dog’ is an insult. And I am, in fact, insulting you.”

Everyone: ...

Zhai Ruobai choked back a laugh, slammed his hand on the conference table, and retorted, ”Mr. Li Weide, you probably don’t know this yet, but the Sixth-rank Superpower User you’re trying to contact is my bro’s wife!”

”Wife, get it? Do you people from Country A even have wives?”

’As if you have a wife!’

Lu Wei was utterly speechless and secretly massaged his temples.

’He had to hand it to these clowns. This was supposed to be a normal meeting, but somehow they’d derailed it into nonsense about single dogs and wives...’

”Well?”

”Well what?” The man with the thick beard couldn’t grasp the profound subtleties of the Country C language. ”What’s a ’why-foo’?”

He turned his head to ask Mr. Li Weide.

Li Weide was exasperated. ”In Country C, ’xífù’ means ’wife.’ As in, your missus.”

”Oh! Wife.” The bearded man’s jaw dropped in surprise. ”The Sixth-rank Superpower User is Captain Gu’s wife??”

Then how were they supposed to pull this off?

How could they possibly succeed in poaching her for their own branch?

Lu Wei took a deep breath, trying hard to steer the bizarre conversation back on topic. ”Mr. Li Weide, it’s like this. You can see our current situation for yourself.”

”The zombie tide outside is overwhelming, and with the sudden change in weather, our entire Jingji Base is now surrounded by sandstorms.”

”It’s highly likely that in the next few days, we’ll have to arrange for the base’s survivors to evacuate to the underground tunnels.”

”So, could we ask you to, at the very least, not cause trouble for us at a time like this?”

Lu Wei’s words were polite and his tone was calm. Compared to his comrade Er Bai, who just derailed everything, his verbal skills were countless times better.

Zhai Ruobai nodded frequently at the side. For every sentence Lu Wei said, he would chime in with a ”Right,” to the point that he lost count of how many times he’d said it...

”I know saying this might provoke all of you, but there’s something I have to get off my chest.” Li Weide smiled at the group. ”Is it that you all have no confidence in Jingji Base?”

”Especially you, Captain Gu. I’m afraid you have no confidence in your own masculine charm!”

Gu Chen stared expressionlessly at Li Weide.

If there had been a bottle handy, Zhai Ruobai probably would have smashed it over Li Weide’s head...

”What did you say, old man!” Zhai Ruobai was furious. ”Are you saying my bro can’t perform?!”

Everyone: ...

Lu Wei adjusted his glasses and forcefully pushed Zhai Ruobai back down into his chair!

’Li Weide himself desperately wanted to ask Zhai Ruobai just where the hell he had pulled the word ”impotent” from!’

”The base previously said it would let us have a face-to-face discussion with the Sixth-rank Superpower User.”

”Then you went back on your word.”

”Now you won’t even let us meet her!”

Li Weide stared at Gu Chen. ”If Mr. Gu weren’t so completely lacking in confidence, why else would you act this way? Hiding your esteemed wife away, refusing to let us even see her?”

”Bro, can I punch this old geezer?” Zhai Ruobai didn’t want to waste time with the old man’s nonsense anymore. He wanted to punch someone!

Lu Wei, hand to his forehead, shoved him down again. ”Bro.”

Gu Chen shot to his feet and grabbed Li Weide by the collar.

’I’m going to explode!’ Lu Wei thought.

’What sins did I commit to deserve this? I spend all day placating my teammates and stopping them from flying off the handle at any moment.’

’So exhausting!’

”Let me put it this way, sir. You’d best get rid of those messy little ideas in your head. Don’t even think about poaching her, okay?”

Gu Chen smiled faintly and wagged a finger at the old man. ”If you dare try to trick my Ningning, you’d better be prepared to die.”

”How do you want to die? Electrocuted, burned, frozen, or hanged? Or would you like to experience the full package?”

This negotiation was going nowhere!

For the first time since they had entered the conference room, the color drained from Li Weide’s face!

”This is ber-rob behavior!” the bearded man shouted. His mangled Country C made Gu Chen and Lu Wei frown.

”What the hell is ’ber-rob’?” Zhai Ruobai didn’t understand.

”He means ’robber,’” Lu Wei rolled his eyes. ”You, shut up. Don’t say another word from now on.”

Er Bai was the kind of idiot who could lead an entire room astray the moment he opened his mouth.

So much for peace talks. The negotiations hadn’t even lasted fifteen minutes before Captain Gu got physical...

Lu Wei was at his wit’s end. He could only go forward and make a half-hearted attempt to pull at Gu Chen’s arm. ”Captain, calm down.”

”Yes, Captain Gu, calm down!” the muscular man also shouted. ”You’re making this very difficult for us! We will report this to our superiors! Have your Secretary-General come see us!”

”You promised to arrange a meeting, and now you suddenly won’t let us see her! Why?”

”We will have the Global Superpower Academy headquarters lodge a formal protest against you, Country C!”

Lu Wei reached out and slapped the wide-eyed muscle man on the head. ”Protest my ass! What are you protesting? Do you even have the right to protest?!”

”Who the hell do you think you are? You’d better behave yourselves in Jingji Base. All this damn nagging and causing trouble during a crisis, you’re annoying me to death!”

Gu Chen and Zhai Ruobai exchanged a look, then hurried forward to grab the rampaging Lu Wei.

Hilarious!

Wasn’t Lu Wei supposed to be the master of calm? Yet he was the first one to throw a punch!
