Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

I. Seventeen Chairs

The war room had seventeen chairs.

Kade Bher had counted them three times.

Not because he was particularly interested in furniture.

Not because the chairs themselves were impressive.

They weren’t.

Most were battered wooden things brought up from the lower barracks, their legs uneven and their backs carved with the initials of soldiers who had passed through the fortress over the years. Two had been repaired with mismatched timber. Another creaked whenever its occupant leaned too far backward.

One had a large crack running through the seat.

That one belonged to Kade.

He had claimed it deliberately.

The argument had taken approximately six seconds.

”That chair is damaged,” Ayame Fubuki had informed him.

Kade had glanced at it.

”Excellent. We have something in common.”

”You are not sitting in that.”

”Too late.”

”It could break.”

”Then we’ll both have a reason to complain.”

Elias Vale, who had been standing beside the table with a stack of ammunition reports, had looked at the chair.

Then at Kade.

Then back at the chair.

”Try not to destroy the only furniture we have.”

”No promises.”

Ayame had closed her eyes.

Elias had sighed.

And the matter had been settled.

Now, several hours later, all seventeen chairs were occupied.

All seventeen Heroes were alive.

Kade looked around the room.

It was an old command chamber built into the western side of a fortified watchtower overlooking the Dawnward Expanse. The walls were thick limestone reinforced with enchanted iron. Narrow windows admitted the final light of evening, and a pair of heavy doors stood open to the adjoining corridor.

The air smelled of oil, old parchment, roasted grain, and the faint medicinal sharpness of healing salves.

A large table occupied the center.

Maps covered most of its surface.

Military maps.

Magical charts.

Evacuation routes.

Marked defensive positions.

Reports from seven allied kingdoms whose armies were gathering across the Expanse.

The borders between those kingdoms appeared in different colors, carefully drawn and annotated.

Kade regarded them with familiar irritation.

The mapmakers had taken considerable care with the borders.

The Waves had never shown any interest in respecting them.

Outside, the camp stretched beneath an increasingly dark sky.

Thousands of soldiers occupied the surrounding defensive works.

Yollandian shield companies maintained the western approaches. Quilstead’s artillery crews were preparing their guns behind earthen revetments. Canderian infantry had established long defensive lines across the southern plain, where pikes, firearms, and enchanted field equipment waited beneath protective covers.

Farther north, the airship formations of Stirlingholme were securing their moorings against the evening wind.

Draqaar’s imperial soldiers occupied the central strongpoints.

Veliko’s cavalry remained assembled beyond the second ridge.

And O’dora’s healers had converted several field buildings into treatment stations large enough to receive more wounded than anyone wanted to count.

It was the largest coalition Kade had ever seen.

That should have been reassuring.

Instead, it made the approaching Wave feel even more terrible.

Wysteria had spent sixteen years sending the Heroes from kingdom to kingdom, from battlefield to battlefield, from one desperate defensive operation to the next.

Now those kingdoms had brought their armies together.

Not because they had finally learned to agree.

Not because centuries of rivalry had magically disappeared.

But because something was coming that none of them believed they could survive alone.

Kade leaned back in his chair.

It creaked.

Ayame looked up.

”Kade.”

He stopped moving.

”What?”

”The chair.”

He glanced down.

Then looked at her.

”Fubuki.”

”What?”

”If the world ends tomorrow, I refuse to spend my final evening being defeated by furniture.”

Elias lowered his head.

The Dagger Hero burst out laughing.

A few others joined her.

Ayame stared at Kade for several seconds.

Then sighed.

”If the world ends tomorrow, I intend to record that you were its most irritating inhabitant.”

Kade smiled.

”Make sure you spell my name correctly.”

”I’ve had sixteen years of practice.”

”Wonderful.”

He looked around the table again.

Seventeen people.

Not titles.

People.

And every one of them looked exhausted.

The Hammer Hero sat with one leg stretched beneath the table.

His old injuries troubled him whenever the weather changed, and the approaching disturbance had apparently convinced half the continent’s atmosphere to become unpleasant.

Beside him sat the Axe Hero, broad-shouldered and quiet, methodically checking the edge of his Weapon while listening to the discussion.

The Whip Hero was helping the Dagger Hero repair a torn fastening on her traveling cloak.

The Katana Hero sat with her blade across her knees, a small whetstone moving steadily along the edge.

The Bow Hero had removed his gloves and was rubbing a painful-looking scar across one wrist.

Farther down, the Harpoon Hero occupied a chair with the careless posture of someone who had spent too much of his life falling from ships, walls, and other places that ordinary people avoided.

The Staff Hero was reading through the most recent magical measurements.

The Scythe Hero sat beside him, quiet but attentive.

The Projectile Hero had both boots propped beneath the table and was staring at the ceiling with the expression of a man who had decided that he would rather be almost anywhere else.

Near the doors, the Airship Hero reviewed a weather report while occasionally glancing toward the narrow windows.

The War Horn Hero sat with his instrument beside his chair, its surface polished in places and battered in others.

The remaining Heroes were scattered among their companions, their sacred weapons resting close enough to reach without anyone needing to think about it.

Ayame occupied the chair beside Kade.

Her Holy Book lay open before her.

She had been writing for most of the afternoon.

Elias sat on Kade’s other side.

The Guardian Firearm rested against his leg, its metallic frame arranged in a compact configuration suitable for transport.

He was counting ammunition.

Again.

Kade watched him.

”Elias.”

”Hm?”

”How many times have you counted that?”

”Enough.”

”That’s not a number.”

”Then stop asking questions that don’t require answers.”

Kade grinned.

”Very friendly tonight.”

Elias continued checking the cartridges.

”You’re welcome.”

Across the table, the Dagger Hero raised her head.

”Has anyone considered that we might be more pleasant company if we weren’t all about to participate in the most dangerous battle of our lives?”

The Hammer Hero glanced toward her.

”Is that your excuse?”

”Yes.”

”For the last sixteen years?”

”Especially those.”

A few people laughed.

The sound was tired.

But genuine.

Kade smiled.

He liked that sound.

It had become increasingly precious.

 Sixteen years.

Sometimes he could hardly believe it.

He had arrived in Wysteria at twelve.

Ayame had been ten.

Elias had been fourteen.

The oldest of them had been sixteen.

They had stood on cold marble with unfamiliar Weapons appearing in their hands, surrounded by adults who called them blessed while children cried for their families.

Now the youngest was twenty-six.

The oldest were thirty-two.

Kade was twenty-eight.

He had been here for more than half his life.

That thought still felt wrong.

He remembered being a little boy racing along a road beneath cedar trees.

He remembered the stream beside the path.

He remembered Ranmei shouting his name.

He remembered Kuroha’s face.

Then came the gold.

And Wysteria.

Sixteen years since he had last seen the people who raised him.

Sixteen years since he had eaten a meal at home.

Sixteen years since he had gone to sleep without expecting that the next morning might bring news of another Wave.

He looked around the table.

Every face carried evidence of those years.

Scars.

Old injuries.

Premature lines of exhaustion.

Eyes that could assess the exits of a room before their owners consciously realized they were doing it.

They had grown older together.

They had become soldiers together.

And, through an extraordinary combination of skill, desperation, teamwork, stubbornness, and circumstances that occasionally seemed determined to make fools of their enemies, they had all survived.

Seventeen children summoned.

Seventeen adults still alive.

The kingdoms celebrated that as proof of divine favor.

Kade knew better.

They were alive because they had fought for it.

Because they had dragged one another off battlefields.

Because Ayame had spent countless nights learning how to stabilize injuries the healers considered hopeless.

Because Elias knew when to shoot and when to hold fire.

Because the Hammer Hero would put himself between an injured friend and something capable of crushing a fortress.

Because the Dagger Hero would crawl through a collapsing ruin to retrieve somebody who couldn’t move.

Because every single person in this room had, at some point, refused to leave another behind.

And because none of them could forget what happened when a Hero died.

Another child.

Another summoning.

Another stolen life.

Kade looked toward the seventeen chairs.

His expression became thoughtful.

For sixteen years, Wysteria had tried to teach them that Heroes could be replaced.

The seventeen people in this room had spent sixteen years proving that they wouldn’t make replacement easy.

Now the last Wave was approaching.

And for the first time, they might have an opportunity to end the cycle altogether.

If they survived it.

Kade lowered his gaze.

A very unpleasant little word.

If.

 II. The Map of Tomorrow

Ayame closed her Book.

The sound was enough to quiet the room.

Not because she had demanded attention.

Not because anyone feared her.

Although several people had developed a healthy respect for what happened when the Book Hero lost her patience.

It was simply that everyone knew what closing the Book meant.

She was ready to speak.

”All right.”

Ayame stood.

Her black-and-white combat robes had been repaired so many times that the original stitching was visible only in a few places. A pale scar crossed one hand, and another disappeared beneath the collar of her clothing.

She looked toward the table.

Then toward the seventeen people gathered around it.

”We have the final coalition deployment reports.”

Kade straightened.

Elias set aside his ammunition records.

The others turned toward her.

Ayame opened the Book again.

Its pages shifted without wind.

Pale lines of light rose from the paper, forming a three-dimensional image above the table.

The Dawnward Expanse appeared in miniature.

Rolling plains.

Low ridges.

Roads.

Rivers.

Fortified positions.

The ancient boundary markers separating the neighboring kingdoms.

Then the projection changed.

A dark region appeared near the eastern horizon.

Its edges pulsed.

Not red.

Not yet.

Black.

The Staff Hero leaned forward.

”Has the distortion grown?”

Ayame nodded.

”Since the last measurement.”

”By how much?”

She gave him the figures.

The room became quiet.

The War Horn Hero lowered his eyes.

The Airship Hero stopped reviewing the weather report.

Elias looked toward the projected darkness.

”That’s faster than yesterday.”

”Yes,” Ayame answered.

Kade regarded the image.

The black region appeared almost modest against the scale of the entire Expanse.

But he knew what the measurements represented.

The space around it was becoming unstable.

The old boundaries were shifting.

Magical currents had begun flowing toward the disturbance from directions that should have been impossible.

And several ancient anchors that had endured centuries of previous Waves were now registering stresses beyond their recorded limits.

Ordinary Waves appeared.

They expanded.

They unleashed their monsters.

Then, with sufficient force and the proper use of the sacred Weapons, the Heroes could destroy or seal them.

This disturbance was different.

It had been developing for weeks.

Possibly longer.

Ayame’s research suggested that the previous Waves had all been connected to something deeper.

Something the older records had described indirectly, sometimes through religious language and sometimes through technical terminology so ancient that the original meaning had been lost.

A central structure.

A source.

Perhaps even an anchor on which the entire destructive cycle depended.

The current disturbance was drawing those patterns together.

Whether it was doing so because the Heroes’ efforts had weakened the system, because the Waves had reached some natural culmination, or because something on the other side had begun deliberately concentrating its strength, nobody could yet say.

But one thing had become increasingly difficult to dispute.

The next Wave would not resemble the others.

The Scythe Hero looked toward Ayame.

”Are you still calling it the Final Wave?”

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

”In the technical records, yes.”

The Hammer Hero snorted.

”Optimistic.”

Ayame looked at him.

”It’s the designation used by the oldest surviving anchor studies.”

”Doesn’t mean whoever wrote them was right.”

”No,” she agreed. ”It doesn’t.”

The Harpoon Hero leaned forward.

”Then what’s with the other name?”

Kade glanced toward the dark projection.

”The Black Wave?”

Ayame nodded.

”The designation spreading through the armies.”

The Airship Hero looked toward the window.

”Hard to blame them. Half the eastern sky has been going dark before sunset.”

Elias studied the projection.

”Whatever we call it, the approach is the same problem.”

Ayame gave him a tired look.

”Thank you for that uplifting contribution.”

”You’re welcome.”

Kade raised a hand.

Everyone turned.

”Proposal.”

Ayame narrowed her eyes.

”Should I be concerned?”

”Probably.”

”Go on.”

He pointed toward the dark region.

”We stop arguing about whether it’s final until after we’ve killed it.”

The Projectile Hero laughed.

The Dagger Hero leaned back in her chair.

”Excellent. Kade has solved naming conventions.”

The Katana Hero shook her head.

Ayame closed her eyes.

”That is not how historical designations work.”

”Then history can complain when we’re done.”

Elias looked toward the projection.

”For once, he’s being practical.”

Ayame stared at him.

”Do not encourage him.”

Kade grinned.

”Too late.”

The laughter passed through the room.

It didn’t erase the fear.

But it gave everyone a moment to remember what their own voices sounded like when they weren’t issuing orders.

Then Ayame raised her hand.

And the planning continued.

The coalition intended to meet the Wave across three principal defensive regions.

The first was an outer screen of reconnaissance elements, cavalry, aerial observation, and mobile military units. Their task was to identify the direction and nature of the initial manifestations without becoming trapped by a sudden expansion of the breach.

The second comprised the main defensive formations.

Infantry.

Artillery.

Enchanted fortifications.

Prepared withdrawal routes.

Heavy magical support.

These units would protect the roads through which civilians and wounded soldiers might need to retreat.

The third region contained the central Hero operations area.

That was where the seventeen would fight.

Not all at once.

Not in one reckless rush toward an unknown enemy.

They had learned far too much over sixteen years to make that mistake.

The Guardian Weapons would support the stabilization of the world’s damaged anchor structures.

The Vassal Heroes would destroy dangerous manifestations, reinforce threatened sections, and exploit openings created by the principal weapons.

The Holy Heroes would concentrate on the largest threats and investigate any route toward the source of the Wave itself.

Every unit had fallback positions.

Every fallback position had a second route.

Every second route had an alternate communication plan.

And when those plans failed, as plans often did, the Heroes would have to do what they had spent sixteen years learning to do.

Think.

Move.

Adapt.

Survive.

Ayame indicated the southern defensive line.

”Canderia’s reserves have enough ammunition for the first planned engagement period. Their commanders are arranging additional deliveries, but the roads may become unusable if the initial rupture expands.”

Elias nodded.

”Then they need forward stores.”

”Already requested.”

”How much?”

Ayame answered.

Elias frowned.

”Not enough.”

”I know.”

”Can Quilstead spare anything?”

”Possibly, if their artillery allocation is reduced.”

The Firearm Guardian looked toward the western battery positions.

”That creates another problem.”

”Yes.”

Kade leaned back.

His chair creaked.

Ayame glanced at him.

He stopped moving.

Then sighed.

”Fine.”

The Hammer Hero looked toward the projected routes.

”What about casualties?”

The room quieted.

Ayame didn’t hesitate.

”O’dora’s healers have established three primary treatment areas and five smaller receiving stations. We’re also positioning trained military surgeons near the main withdrawal roads.”

”And if the roads collapse?”

”The Staff Hero and I have prepared temporary transfer bindings.”

The Staff Hero nodded.

”Limited capacity. We can’t move entire armies through them.”

”How limited?” Elias asked.

He received an answer.

Nobody looked particularly pleased.

Kade studied the projection.

Then spoke.

”Prioritize people who can’t move on their own.”

Ayame nodded.

”Already written.”

”And keep the routes clear of ceremonial traffic.”

The Dagger Hero looked up.

”Has someone tried to arrange a parade?”

Kade regarded her.

”Would you be surprised?”

She considered that.

Then sighed.

”No.”

The War Horn Hero leaned back.

”One of the royal officers asked whether the banners should be carried into the forward positions.”

Elias slowly closed his eyes.

Kade stared.

”...You’re joking.”

”Unfortunately.”

There was a silence.

Then Kade rubbed his face.

”I’ve spent sixteen years fighting monsters, and I’m still amazed by people.”

Ayame turned a page.

”The banners have been assigned to the appropriate rear formations.”

The Harpoon Hero grinned.

”By royal order?”

”By mine.”

Kade looked toward her.

A slow smile appeared.

”Fubuki.”

She didn’t look up.

”Don’t.”

”That was beautiful.”

”Please concentrate.”

He leaned back.

His chair creaked again.

This time, Ayame ignored it.

III. The Price of Sixteen Years

The planning continued until the last sunlight disappeared from the windows.

By then, Kade’s left hand had begun aching.

He had noticed it an hour earlier.

The pain wasn’t particularly severe.

Not compared with injuries he’d endured before.

It was simply persistent.

A dull discomfort running from the base of his thumb toward his wrist, accompanied by the faint stiffness that appeared whenever he spent too long wearing the Gauntlets without giving the underlying joints enough rest.

He flexed his fingers.

The metal responded.

Articulated plates shifted across his knuckles.

A faint golden line moved through one of the inset matrices.

Then the ache returned.

Kade frowned.

Wonderful.

The Gauntlets had changed enormously since their first manifestation.

Sixteen years of battles had unlocked new forms, reinforced old ones, and allowed him to develop techniques that the ceremonial Weapon manuals had never described.

They were magnificent instruments of destruction.

They were also exceptionally demanding.

The stronger he became, the more precisely he needed to control them.

He could channel enough force through one fist to rupture an armored monster’s skull.

He could redirect attacks that would have destroyed ordinary fortifications.

He could survive impacts that should have torn his arms from their sockets.

But none of those abilities made his body invincible.

His bones could still break.

His muscles could still tear.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

His organs could still fail.

And healing magic, for all its extraordinary power, did not make sixteen years of accumulated damage disappear as though it had never happened.

Kade looked down at his hand.

There were scars beneath the Gauntlets.

Some old.

Some newer.

A narrow line crossed one finger from an incident involving a creature with crystalline teeth.

Another ran along the inside of his wrist.

He couldn’t remember exactly which battle had caused that one.

The uncertainty bothered him.

It happened increasingly often.

Not with the important things.

He could remember the names of soldiers who had died in his arms.

He could remember the faces of children he’d pulled from collapsed houses.

He could remember the sound Ayame made when she discovered one of the Heroes had nearly died.

He could remember Elias’s expression after a battle in which his Firearm had almost shattered.

But smaller details disappeared.

Which Wave had damaged his left shoulder?

Which kingdom had that ruined bell tower belonged to?

Where had he acquired the scar beneath his right collarbone?

He could remember being injured.

He could remember pain.

He could remember people helping him.

But after sixteen years, the individual battles had begun blurring together.

Kade hated that.

He didn’t want to forget.

Yet sometimes he wished he could.

”Your hand.”

He looked up.

Elias was watching him.

Kade blinked.

”What about it?”

”You’re rubbing your wrist.”

Kade glanced down.

He was.

”...Ah.”

”Still bothering you?”

”Little.”

Elias looked unimpressed.

”How little?”

Kade considered that.

”Moderately little.”

”Kade.”

”Politically acceptable little.”

The Firearm Guardian sighed.

Across the table, Ayame looked up.

”What happened?”

”Nothing,” Kade answered.

Elias turned toward her.

”His left wrist is bothering him.”

Kade stared.

”Traitor.”

Ayame closed her Book.

”Kade.”

He groaned.

”Oh, wonderful. Here we go.”

”Let me see.”

”It’s fine.”

”Let me see.”

”Fubuki, we’ve spent sixteen years having this exact conversation.”

”Then you should have learned how it ends.”

The Dagger Hero glanced up from her repaired cloak.

”Usually with him losing.”

”Thank you,” Elias said.

Kade looked around the table.

”Does nobody respect the Holy Gauntlet Hero anymore?”

The Hammer Hero snorted.

”Did we ever?”

A ripple of laughter passed through the room.

Kade sighed.

”Terrible generation.”

Ayame held out her hand.

He looked at it.

Then at her.

She raised an eyebrow.

Kade reluctantly extended his left arm.

The Holy Book opened beside her.

A narrow column of pale light moved over the Gauntlet.

Its pages turned.

Several lines of diagnostic script appeared.

Ayame examined them.

Her expression tightened slightly.

Kade noticed.

”...That bad?”

”No.”

”Convincing.”

”There’s accumulated stress in the supporting tissues. Your Weapon’s protective structures are functioning, but you’ve been compensating for the discomfort by changing how you move your wrist.”

Elias looked toward him.

Kade avoided his eyes.

Ayame continued.

”You need treatment tonight. And you need to stop pretending that an ache doesn’t matter merely because you’ve survived worse.”

Kade considered that.

Then sighed.

”All right.”

She blinked.

”...All right?”

”Yes.”

”You’re agreeing?”

”Apparently.”

Ayame stared.

The Dagger Hero looked up.

”Is he dying?”

Kade pointed at her.

”Careful.”

The Hammer Hero leaned forward.

”Somebody get a healer. Kade just accepted medical advice.”

The War Horn Hero laughed.

Ayame slowly narrowed her eyes.

”You’re planning something.”

Kade looked offended.

”Fubuki.”

”What?”

”I’m twenty-eight years old.”

”Yes.”

”A fully grown adult.”

”Debatable.”

”I’ve been fighting the Waves for sixteen years.”

”Unfortunately.”

”Perhaps I’ve finally developed a mature respect for the limitations of my own body.”

The room became silent.

Everyone stared at him.

Then Elias said:

”No.”

The laughter was immediate.

Kade groaned.

”Unbelievable.”

Ayame smiled despite herself.

Then summoned a small stabilizing sigil and settled it around his wrist.

The warmth was gentle.

Not enough to repair everything.

Not enough to erase the strain.

Just enough to ease the discomfort until a healer could examine him properly.

Kade flexed his fingers.

The ache diminished.

He looked toward Ayame.

”...Thanks.”

She nodded.

”You’re welcome.”

A pause followed.

Then she added:

”Please keep it attached until the morning.”

Kade stared.

”My wrist?”

”The support binding, you idiot.”

”Oh.”

Elias shook his head.

The Dagger Hero started laughing again.

And for another precious minute, seventeen exhausted people sounded less like the last defense of a dying world and more like old friends gathered around a table.

 The laughter faded eventually.

It always did.

Not because they stopped finding things funny.

But because the weight of tomorrow remained.

The Airship Hero looked toward the projection above the table.

”Stirlingholme can put its entire available formation in the air.”

Ayame nodded.

”Confirmed.”

”And the Guardian Airship?”

The question came from the Staff Hero.

The Airship Hero glanced toward the ceiling.

Then toward the windows.

”Ready.”

Elias looked at him.

”Truly?”

The older Hero hesitated.

Then sighed.

”As ready as I can make her.”

The great enchanted vessel associated with his Guardian Weapon had undergone extensive preparations.

Its frame had been inspected.

Its magical systems reinforced.

Its aerial crews briefed.

The escort formations had practiced emergency withdrawal procedures.

But the Airship Hero knew what everyone else knew.

If the sky itself began tearing apart, normal flight procedures might become meaningless.

He looked toward the projection.

”I can hold an aerial corridor if the distortion behaves within the upper range of our estimates.”

Ayame lowered her eyes.

”And if it doesn’t?”

The Airship Hero smiled faintly.

”Then we’ll have to become exceptionally creative.”

Kade nodded.

”That’s our specialty.”

”Yours, perhaps.”

”Jealousy is unbecoming.”

The Airship Hero laughed.

Then his expression softened.

”I’ve spoken with the flight crews.”

Nobody interrupted.

”They know the risks. They know what we’re trying to accomplish.”

A pause.

”And they know that if things go badly, I may have to order them away from the center before I’m ready to leave myself.”

Elias looked toward him.

”You’ve prepared an alternate command arrangement?”

”Yes.”

”Good.”

Ayame made a note.

The War Horn Hero leaned forward.

”Morale across the coalition is holding better than expected.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

”That’s encouraging.”

”Mostly.”

”Ah.”

The older Hero sighed.

”People know something enormous is coming. They can feel the pressure in the air. The horses are restless. Some of the magical equipment has been behaving strangely.”

He looked toward the dark windows.

”And everyone has heard the name.”

The Black Wave.

Nobody said it immediately.

They didn’t need to.

It had spread through the armies long before the official reports adopted it.

An approaching darkness.

A distortion in the sky.

A concentration of forces beyond anything the previous Waves had revealed.

Something that made even veteran soldiers stop speaking when they looked toward the eastern horizon.

Kade regarded the projection.

Then asked quietly:

”How many civilians are still inside the expected danger zone?”

Ayame answered.

He frowned.

”Too many.”

”I know.”

”Can we move the last settlements before dawn?”

”The transports are already being used. Some routes are at capacity.”

Kade rubbed his face.

”Wonderful.”

Elias leaned forward.

”We can reassign the southern escort.”

”That leaves the artillery supply road exposed,” the Axe Hero said.

”Only if the first defensive line fails early.”

The Hammer Hero looked toward the map.

”Which is possible.”

”Yes,” Elias answered.

The room grew quiet again.

Kade studied the evacuation routes.

Then looked toward Ayame.

”Can the Book extend the temporary transfer network to the western villages?”

She hesitated.

”Not without risking interference with the world-anchor work.”

He nodded slowly.

”Right.”

The Staff Hero leaned forward.

”I may be able to support an additional transfer point if we reduce the reserve capacity near the northern ridge.”

Ayame frowned.

”That would weaken our emergency withdrawal options.”

”Yes.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the Dagger Hero said:

”Let’s ask the people running the evacuations what they can realistically move before we start rearranging the entire defensive plan.”

Kade looked toward her.

She shrugged.

”We’ve spent sixteen years watching commanders make decisions about roads they’ve never walked. I’d prefer not to become one of them.”

Ayame smiled faintly.

”Agreed.”

Elias nodded.

”Send the question.”

The Book opened.

A message was prepared.

And the seventeen returned to the work of preparing for a battle none of them wanted to fight.

 IV. Dinner for the Unreplaceable

The food arrived after the war room had grown too dark to read without magical light.

Not a ceremonial banquet.

There were no golden serving trays.

No royal cooks.

No elaborate procession of attendants announcing the glory of the sacred Heroes.

Someone simply knocked on the door.

The Hammer Hero looked up.

”Come in!”

Two military kitchen workers entered carrying large covered containers.

A third followed with a basket of bread and a stack of bowls.

The first worker looked nervous.

”Evening, my lords and ladies.”

Kade immediately raised a hand.

”Don’t.”

The young soldier froze.

”...Sir?”

”Nobody here is a lord unless they’ve done something very unfortunate with their free time.”

A few Heroes laughed.

The soldier looked toward Ayame.

She nodded.

”You can just set the food down.”

Relief crossed his face.

”Yes, ma’am.”

The containers were placed on a side table.

The smell reached Kade almost immediately.

Stew.

Warm bread.

Something involving roasted onions.

He straightened.

”...Oh.”

Elias glanced toward him.

Kade looked deeply moved.

”Food.”

Ayame closed her eyes.

”Yes, Kade.”

”Actual food.”

”We had breakfast.”

”That was hours ago.”

”You had lunch.”

”Allegedly.”

The Dagger Hero laughed.

The Hammer Hero rose from his chair.

”Move.”

Kade blinked.

”What?”

The larger man pointed toward the serving table.

”Before I eat everything.”

Kade stared.

Then grinned.

”Threatening the Gauntlet Hero?”

”With starvation.”

”Monster.”

The soldiers relaxed as the Heroes began gathering their bowls.

Within minutes, the room had changed.

Maps remained spread across the table, but the projection had been dismissed.

The Weapons rested beside their bearers.

Conversation shifted from defensive formations to food, old arguments, and the extraordinary difficulty of acquiring enough clean socks during a military campaign.

Kade sat with a bowl balanced carefully in his hands.

His left wrist still bore Ayame’s support binding.

The stew was hot.

A little too salty.

The bread was slightly stale.

He considered both excellent.

Across from him, the Harpoon Hero was explaining an incident involving a badly secured cargo sling, a wet wooden dock, and an unfortunate misunderstanding about whether the Guardian Airship could be used as an emergency crane.

The Airship Hero looked increasingly offended.

”I said we could lift the cargo.”

”You did!”

”I did not say you should stand on it!”

”You were being unclear!”

”There was a forty-meter drop!”

”A detail!”

The Projectile Hero nearly choked on his food.

The Katana Hero lowered her face toward her bowl, shoulders shaking.

Kade grinned.

”Sounds like excellent teamwork.”

The Airship Hero pointed at him.

”Don’t encourage him.”

”Too late.”

The Harpoon Hero raised his bread triumphantly.

”Thank you, Kade!”

Elias sighed.

Ayame continued eating.

The Whip Hero looked toward the Hammer Hero.

”Remember the siege of North Bell?”

The Hammer Hero groaned.

”No.”

The Dagger Hero brightened.

”Oh, I remember that.”

”Please don’t.”

”You got stuck in the gate.”

”I did not get stuck.”

Kade slowly lowered his spoon.

”...You got stuck in a gate?”

The Hammer Hero glared.

”It was collapsing.”

The Whip Hero smiled.

”And he tried to hold it open.”

”Which I did.”

”With his body.”

Kade stared.

The Dagger Hero nodded.

”Then the hinge failed.”

The Hammer Hero folded his arms.

”I saved twelve people.”

Ayame looked up.

”Fourteen.”

The man blinked.

”...Fourteen?”

She nodded.

”The official casualty report initially omitted two civilians evacuated through the eastern passage. I corrected the record.”

The Hammer Hero looked at her.

Then smiled faintly.

”Oh.”

Kade nodded solemnly.

”Fourteen lives saved by becoming a doorstop.”

The room erupted.

The Hammer Hero pointed at him.

”You’re next.”

Kade grinned.

”Bring it.”

Elias quietly moved his bowl farther from them.

Ayame did the same.

They had learned.

For a while, the conversation remained light.

Stories from old campaigns.

Arguments about whose kingdom had the best bread.

Complaints about military accommodations.

The astonishing incompetence of a noble who had once attempted to explain close-quarters combat to Kade.

The fact that Elias had, on one memorable occasion, spent twenty minutes silently staring at a quartermaster until the man admitted he’d falsified ammunition records.

”I didn’t threaten him,” Elias said.

The Dagger Hero raised an eyebrow.

”You didn’t have to.”

”He confessed.”

”Because you stared at him like you were choosing where to bury him.”

”I was calculating the discrepancy.”

Kade grinned.

”Terrifying mathematics.”

Ayame shook her head.

The Firearm Guardian continued eating.

Then the jokes began slowing.

Not all at once.

Nobody announced that the mood was changing.

It simply happened.

A pause lasted a little longer than usual.

Someone looked toward the dark windows.

Another glanced at the map.

The sound of soldiers moving along the outer corridor reminded everyone that the armies were still preparing.

And eventually, the Bow Hero set down his bowl.

”...Do you ever wonder what happens afterward?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Kade looked toward him.

”After what?”

The man gave him a tired look.

”Kade.”

”Just checking.”

”After tomorrow.”

The room grew quiet.

Ayame lowered her spoon.

Elias looked toward the table.

The Bow Hero folded his hands.

”I know we have plans. I know we have objectives.”

He glanced toward the dark projection that had been dismissed.

”But if we’re right...”

His voice softened.

”If this really is the last Wave...”

He stopped.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the Whip Hero asked quietly:

”What do we do?”

Kade looked around the table.

Seventeen people.

Thirty-two years old at the oldest.

Twenty-six at the youngest.

People who had spent sixteen years preparing for battles.

People who could explain military doctrine, magical structures, siege defenses, and monster anatomy with frightening precision.

People who had saved cities.

Buried friends.

Confronted kings.

Defied priests.

And survived catastrophes that would have broken most armies.

The Bow Hero looked down.

”...What do we do when there’s nothing left to fight?”

Kade opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

For once, he didn’t have an immediate answer.

V. The Lives They Might Still Have

The first person to answer was the Dagger Hero.

”I’m going to sleep.”

Everyone looked toward her.

She nodded firmly.

”For three days.”

The Hammer Hero snorted.

”Only three?”

”Fine. A week.”

The Whip Hero smiled.

”You’d get bored.”

”Then I’ll sleep somewhere interesting.”

Kade leaned back.

His chair complained.

Ayame glanced toward him.

He stopped moving.

The Dagger Hero continued.

”I’m serious. No alarms. No emergency summons. No priests knocking on the door to tell me a village has been eaten.”

She looked toward the others.

”No one saying a Hero has to rise before dawn because the kingdom needs her.”

The room became quiet.

She lowered her eyes.

”I want to wake up because I’ve finished sleeping.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then the Hammer Hero nodded.

”...That sounds nice.”

The Bow Hero smiled faintly.

”Very nice.”

The Axe Hero folded his arms.

”I want to build something.”

Kade looked toward him.

”Build what?”

The man considered that.

”A house.”

”Ah.”

”Not a fortress. Not a defensive wall. A house.”

He looked down at his enormous hands.

”Something with a proper roof. A door that locks. A table.”

The Harpoon Hero grinned.

”You’ve become ambitious.”

The Axe Hero smiled.

”And a garden.”

”Oh, now you’re dreaming.”

”Yes.”

The word came quietly.

The Harpoon Hero’s smile faded.

The Axe Hero looked toward the dark windows.

”I think I’d like that.”

No one laughed.

 The others began answering.

The Katana Hero wanted to visit the coast where she’d grown up.

She remembered the sound of waves breaking against stone steps and the smell of fish being grilled near the harbor. She remembered a little shop that sold sweets wrapped in colored paper.

She couldn’t remember the shopkeeper’s face anymore.

That bothered her.

The Staff Hero wanted to return to a library.

Not the cathedral archives.

Not a royal collection of military records.

A real library.

One where people read because they were curious.

He wanted to sit beside a window and finish a book without somebody arriving halfway through to explain that a province was under attack.

The Projectile Hero wanted to go fishing.

Kade stared at him.

”Fishing?”

”Yes.”

”After sixteen years of shooting things?”

”Exactly.”

He shrugged.

”I want to spend an entire afternoon attempting to catch something that won’t try to kill me.”

Elias nodded.

”Reasonable.”

The Projectile Hero smiled.

”Thank you.”

Kade considered that.

Then asked:

”What if the fish are aggressive?”

The man closed his eyes.

”Please don’t.”

”Could happen.”

”Kade.”

”Some fish have teeth.”

The Dagger Hero threw a piece of bread at him.

He caught it.

”Thank you.”

Ayame sighed.

But she was smiling.

The Airship Hero wanted to see his family’s home.

He hadn’t spoken of it much over the years.

Tonight, however, he described the view from a hill behind the place where he’d grown up.

He remembered sitting there as a boy, watching clouds move across the sky.

He’d always wanted to fly.

Wysteria had given him the ability.

It had also made flying into something he feared.

”I’d like to see clouds without wondering what’s hiding inside them,” he admitted.

The War Horn Hero nodded.

”I’d like to hear music again.”

Someone glanced toward the instrument beside his chair.

He shook his head.

”Not battle signals. Not marching songs. Just music.”

His expression softened.

”Someone playing badly at a festival. People laughing. Somebody trying to sing while everyone else tells them to stop.”

He paused.

”...That would be enough.”

The Harpoon Hero wanted to travel.

Not under orders.

Not to escort an army.

Not because a Wave had destroyed a port.

He wanted to board a vessel, watch the shoreline disappear, and have absolutely no obligation to fight anything at the other end.

The Whip Hero wanted a family.

She said it so quietly that several people nearly missed the words.

When they looked toward her, she flushed.

”What?”

The Hammer Hero smiled.

”Nothing.”

She folded her arms.

”Don’t.”

”I didn’t say anything.”

”You’re smiling.”

”Am I?”

”Yes!”

Kade grinned.

”Terrible behavior.”

The Whip Hero pointed at him.

”You’re even worse.”

”Frequently.”

Her expression softened.

Then she looked toward the table.

”I just... think it would be nice.”

A pause.

”To have a place where people come home because they want to. Not because they’re injured and the healers have brought them back.”

Nobody teased her after that.

 Then Elias spoke.

”I want to be useless.”

Kade turned.

”...What?”

The Firearm Guardian looked toward his Weapon.

”I want there to be a day when nobody needs me.”

Kade stared at him.

Elias continued.

”No one needs a firing solution. No one needs an evacuation route covered. Nobody needs to know how many rounds I have left.”

He looked around the table.

”I’d like to go somewhere, sit down, and have someone ask me to do something completely ordinary.”

The Dagger Hero smiled.

”Such as?”

Elias considered that.

”Carry groceries.”

Kade blinked.

Then started laughing.

Elias regarded him.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

”Then stop.”

”Sorry.”

Kade tried to compose himself.

Failed.

Then grinned.

”The legendary Firearm Guardian. Scourge of the Waves. Terror of siege monsters. Defender of kingdoms.”

Elias slowly closed his eyes.

Kade continued.

”Professional grocery carrier.”

The room dissolved into laughter.

Even Elias smiled.

Only slightly.

But it was enough.

”At least groceries don’t usually shoot back.”

Kade considered that.

”Depends where you’re shopping.”

Ayame groaned.

”Kade.”

”What?”

”Please.”

He raised both hands.

”Fine. Fine.”

The laughter faded.

Elias looked down at his Firearm.

Then said quietly:

”I’d like to know what my hands feel like when I don’t need to keep them steady.”

Kade’s smile softened.

He didn’t answer.

Because he understood.

 Eventually, everyone looked toward Ayame.

She noticed.

Her expression became suspicious.

”What?”

The Hammer Hero smiled.

”Your turn.”

Ayame blinked.

”My turn for what?”

”Tell us what you want to do.”

She looked toward her Book.

Then toward the maps.

”I haven’t decided.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

”Fubuki.”

”What?”

”Sixteen years, and you haven’t decided?”

”I’ve been busy.”

”Terrible excuse.”

She stared at him.

”Excuse me?”

”Don’t tell me you’ve spent sixteen years planning every evacuation route in Wysteria without planning what you’re going to do when we finally get rid of this stupid war.”

Ayame opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then looked away.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

When she finally spoke, her voice was quieter.

”I want to know whether my mother is alive.”

The room went still.

Ayame’s fingers rested on the edge of her Book.

She was twenty-six.

She had been ten when Wysteria summoned her.

The little girl who’d been crossing a road near a convenience store.

The girl who had stood in a golden circle looking for her schoolbag.

Sixteen years had passed.

She didn’t know whether the same amount of time had passed at home.

She didn’t know whether the world she’d left behind would recognize her.

And she didn’t know whether the people waiting there had survived the intervening years.

Ayame looked down.

”I remember her voice.”

Kade watched her.

”I remember what she sounded like when she called me to dinner. I remember how she used to complain when I left my schoolbooks in the wrong place.”

A faint smile appeared.

”She was very particular about that.”

Nobody interrupted.

Ayame continued.

”I remember promising I’d come home before it got dark.”

Her smile disappeared.

She looked toward the Book.

”...I didn’t.”

For several seconds, the room remained silent.

Then the Dagger Hero reached across the table and rested one hand over hers.

Ayame looked up.

The younger woman smiled.

”We’ll try.”

Ayame swallowed.

Then nodded.

”...Yes.”

Kade lowered his eyes.

The Book Hero’s fingers tightened around her friend’s hand.

For a moment, she looked exactly as tired as she was.

Not a sacred archivist.

Not the brilliant strategist who had kept their generation alive through a thousand terrible decisions.

Just Ayame.

A woman who wanted to know whether someone still remembered the little girl she’d once been.

Then the Hammer Hero looked toward Kade.

”Your turn.”

Kade blinked.

”...My turn?”

The man nodded.

”What do you want?”

Kade considered that.

Then smiled.

”A vacation.”

The Dagger Hero stared.

”You’ve already made that joke.”

”Still want one.”

Elias raised an eyebrow.

”A real answer.”

Kade sighed.

”Everyone’s very demanding.”

Ayame watched him.

He looked toward the map.

Then toward the windows.

For a moment, he considered making another joke.

It would have been easy.

Something about finding a tavern.

Something about sleeping for a month.

Something about escaping before the priests realized their Heroes had become unemployed.

But the others had answered honestly.

And after sixteen years of keeping one another alive, he supposed he owed them at least that much.

Kade rested his hands on the table.

The Gauntlets made a faint metallic sound against the wood.

”...I want to go home.”

Nobody laughed.

He looked toward the dark windows.

”There’s a place.”

A pause.

”A country I grew up in.”

Ayame nodded slowly.

She knew parts of it.

So did Elias.

Kade had told them stories over the years, usually when they were resting after battles or trying to distract somebody who couldn’t sleep.

Stories about peculiar roads.

Fox spirits.

Shrines.

Trains.

A market stall where people took tea and argued about things that weren’t remotely important.

He rarely explained the stranger parts.

Not because he didn’t trust them.

Simply because there were things about Mizunokuni that were difficult to describe to someone who had never stood beneath its sky.

Kade continued.

”I lived with my aunts.”

The Harpoon Hero raised an eyebrow.

”Aunts?”

”Yes.”

”Plural?”

Kade smiled faintly.

”Very plural.”

The Dagger Hero grinned.

”How many?”

He hesitated.

Then answered.

”Twelve.”

Silence.

The Hammer Hero slowly lowered his bowl.

”...Twelve?”

”Yep.”

The Projectile Hero stared.

”How did you survive?”

Kade considered that.

Then sighed.

”Excellent question.”

Laughter spread across the room.

Kade smiled.

Then continued.

”They’re all very different. Some are reasonable.”

A pause.

”Occasionally.”

Ayame shook her head.

”And the others?”

”Terrifying.”

Elias raised an eyebrow.

”More terrifying than you?”

Kade looked toward him.

Then nodded solemnly.

”Much.”

The Firearm Guardian considered that.

”...I see.”

”You don’t.”

The Dagger Hero burst out laughing.

Kade leaned back slightly.

”My Aunt Kuroha is the one who took me in. She can do some extraordinary things with roads and boundaries.”

The Staff Hero looked interested.

”Spatial manipulation?”

”Among other things.”

”How advanced?”

Kade smiled.

”Advanced enough that I used to think she could get anywhere.”

His expression softened.

”Maybe she can.”

A silence followed.

Then he continued.

”And Ranmei...”

The name came differently.

Warmer.

Older.

Almost painfully familiar.

Ayame looked toward him.

Kade smiled faintly.

”She was my friend.”

Elias raised an eyebrow.

”Was?”

Kade glanced at him.

”Is.”

The correction came immediately.

The Firearm Guardian nodded.

Kade looked down.

”One year older than me. Nine tails. Very pretty. Very annoying.”

The Dagger Hero smiled.

”Sounds like someone we know.”

Kade raised a hand.

”Don’t.”

She grinned.

”Just saying.”

He sighed.

”She found me when I was little. Brought me to Kuroha.”

The room grew quieter.

Kade continued.

”We grew up together. Ran around the roads. Got into trouble.”

Ayame smiled faintly.

”Mostly you?”

”Absolutely.”

The laughter was gentler this time.

Kade looked toward the Gauntlets.

”I used to call her Auntie Ranmei.”

The Dagger Hero blinked.

”Why?”

”Because she hated it.”

Elias nodded.

”Of course.”

”She’d chase me halfway across the countryside.”

Ayame smiled.

”And you kept doing it?”

”Naturally.”

”You’re impossible.”

”Frequently.”

Kade looked toward the windows.

The smile slowly faded.

”...We were playing when they summoned me.”

The room fell silent.

He swallowed.

”Running along a path. I think we were going to be late for dinner.”

The memory returned with terrible clarity.

Sunlight through the cedars.

The sound of Ranmei shouting.

Kuroha’s smile.

A ring of gold.

Kade stared toward the darkened window.

”Ranmei grabbed my hand.”

His voice became quieter.

”She tried to hold on.”

Ayame lowered her eyes.

Elias watched him without speaking.

Kade continued.

”Kuroha tried to stop it too.”

He flexed his fingers.

The Gauntlets moved.

”...She almost did.”

Nobody interrupted.

For a long moment, Kade stared at his hands.

Then he looked up.

”So that’s what I want.”

A pause.

”I want to go back.”

He tried to smile.

”I want to walk that road again.”

His voice caught slightly.

”I want Ranmei to call me an idiot because I stayed out too late.”

Another pause.

”And I want Aunt Kuroha to tell me dinner’s ready.”

For several seconds, the room remained completely silent.

Then the Hammer Hero nodded.

”...Sounds good.”

Kade looked toward him.

The older Hero smiled.

”I hope you get it.”

Kade swallowed.

Then nodded.

”Yeah.”

He looked around the table.

”I hope we all do.”

VI. What If Home Has Forgotten Us?

The question came from the Scythe Hero.

Quietly.

Almost reluctantly.

”What if there’s nothing left?”

Nobody answered.

He looked toward the table.

”I don’t mean Wysteria.”

His expression was troubled.

”I mean home.”

The room grew still.

He continued.

”What if the worlds we came from have changed? What if time passed differently?”

Ayame’s face tightened.

”What if the people we remember are gone?”

The Scythe Hero nodded.

”Yes.”

A long silence followed.

It was a fear every one of them had carried for years.

Most had simply avoided giving it words.

Sixteen years.

That was long enough for children to become adults.

For parents to grow old.

For homes to be sold.

For cities to change.

For wars to begin and end.

For people to move away.

For someone who had disappeared without explanation to be mourned.

The Heroes knew almost nothing about the passage of time beyond Wysteria.

They had spent years searching for answers.

The summoning ritual had reached across worlds, but the records were incomplete, contradictory, and often deliberately obscured by generations of religious interpretation.

Some scholars insisted time flowed evenly.

Others argued that each world possessed its own temporal structure.

A few claimed that the sacred Weapons could eventually return their bearers to the exact moment of departure.

Kade had always liked that theory.

Unfortunately, he’d never found evidence sufficient to trust it.

The Staff Hero leaned forward.

”We still don’t have a reliable model.”

Ayame nodded.

”No.”

”Even if we break the summoning framework...”

”We may not know where the original connections lead,” she finished.

Elias folded his arms.

”And we don’t know what happens to the Weapon bonds if the framework collapses.”

Kade looked down at his Gauntlets.

There it was.

Another unpleasant possibility.

They might win.

They might stop the Waves.

They might finally break the system that had stolen them.

And still remain trapped.

Or worse, discover that the worlds they’d left behind had continued without them.

The Dagger Hero spoke quietly.

”My little brother was seven.”

Several people looked toward her.

She stared at her hands.

”When they took me.”

Her voice trembled.

”He’d be twenty-three now.”

A pause.

”If time passed the same way.”

The Whip Hero rested a hand on her shoulder.

She swallowed.

”What if he doesn’t remember me?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody could promise otherwise.

The Harpoon Hero looked away.

The Bow Hero lowered his head.

Even Kade found himself staring at the table without knowing what to say.

After a while, Ayame spoke.

”We don’t know.”

The Dagger Hero looked toward her.

Ayame’s expression remained gentle.

”But we won’t know until we try.”

A pause followed.

Then Elias nodded.

”We’ve spent sixteen years looking for a route home while fighting a war.”

He glanced toward the others.

”If the Waves end, we can give that problem our full attention.”

The Staff Hero considered that.

Then nodded slowly.

”Yes.”

The Book Hero looked toward the map.

”And if the summoning framework can be stabilized instead of destroyed outright, we may be able to preserve enough information to reconstruct the original connections.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

”Can you do that?”

Ayame hesitated.

”I don’t know.”

He studied her.

She looked almost frustrated by the honesty of the answer.

Then he smiled faintly.

”All right.”

She blinked.

”All right?”

”Yeah.”

He leaned forward.

”We’ll find out.”

The Scythe Hero looked toward him.

”And if we can’t?”

Kade considered the question.

For a moment, he had no answer.

Then he looked around the table.

At Ayame.

Elias.

The Dagger Hero.

The Hammer Hero.

All seventeen.

”...Then we figure out what comes next.”

Nobody spoke.

He continued.

”I’d love to go home. More than anything.”

A pause.

”But I’m not pretending the road is guaranteed.”

He glanced toward the dark windows.

”And I’m not going to promise any of you that everything will be waiting exactly as you left it.”

The Dagger Hero lowered her eyes.

Kade’s voice softened.

”I can’t do that.”

He looked toward her.

”But if we win tomorrow, at least we get the chance to find out.”

A long silence followed.

Then the Hammer Hero nodded.

”That’s enough for me.”

The Bow Hero looked toward him.

After a moment, he nodded too.

Others followed.

Not because the answer solved anything.

It didn’t.

But because there was something more honest about an uncertain future than the false certainty Wysteria had been selling them since childhood.

They didn’t need another priest promising that everything would be wonderful.

They needed a chance to choose what happened after the fighting stopped.

And for now, that was worth protecting.

 VII. The Book of Names

The meal ended slowly.

Nobody seemed particularly eager to leave.

The maps had been put away.

The defensive orders were distributed.

The weapons inspected.

The final preparations assigned.

There was still work to do.

There would always be work to do.

But the seventeen remained together.

Some sat in silence.

Others spoke quietly in pairs.

The Katana Hero was helping the Dagger Hero repair a damaged strap.

The Hammer Hero had somehow fallen asleep in his chair.

The Whip Hero had placed a folded cloak beneath his head.

The Airship Hero was staring through the window toward the distant mooring fields.

Elias sat beside Kade, inspecting the Guardian Firearm one last time.

Ayame remained at the table.

Writing.

Kade watched her for several minutes.

Then leaned closer.

”Fubuki.”

”Hm?”

”What are you writing?”

”Names.”

He blinked.

”...Names?”

She nodded.

He looked toward the page.

There were seventeen entries.

Not Weapon designations.

Not titles.

Names.

Personal names.

Each written carefully.

No ceremonial honorifics.

No classification.

No accompanying statement about strategic importance.

Just the people.

Kade stared.

Ayame continued writing.

He glanced toward her.

”...Why?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she looked up.

”Because I want us to remember.”

Kade’s expression softened.

She looked toward the names.

”For sixteen years, every military report has called us by our Weapons.”

A pause.

”The Gauntlet Hero. The Firearm Guardian. The Book Hero.”

She closed her eyes.

”Some of the older records barely mention the people at all.”

Kade nodded slowly.

Ayame continued.

”If tomorrow really is the last Wave, I want something that belongs to us.”

She looked at him.

”Not the System. Not the kingdoms. Not the churches.”

Her fingers rested against the page.

”Us.”

Kade stared at the names.

Then smiled faintly.

”...You planning to write our entire history?”

Ayame considered that.

”Perhaps.”

He raised an eyebrow.

”That’ll be a long book.”

”Probably.”

”You’ll need several volumes.”

”I know.”

”And an entire chapter dedicated to my incredible heroism.”

She looked at him.

Then smiled sweetly.

”I was considering a footnote.”

Kade stared.

Elias made a suspicious sound beside him.

The Dagger Hero looked up.

Kade slowly placed one hand against his chest.

”...Betrayal.”

Ayame smiled.

”A very small footnote.”

”Heartless.”

”Accurate.”

He sighed.

”After everything I’ve done for you.”

”Especially after everything you’ve done.”

Elias finally laughed.

Kade turned toward him.

”Not you too.”

The Firearm Guardian shook his head.

Ayame looked toward the page again.

Then spoke more quietly.

”Kade.”

He turned.

”Hm?”

”If we make it...”

She stopped.

For a moment, the only sounds were the distant movements of soldiers and the soft breathing of the sleeping Hammer Hero.

Ayame looked toward the names.

”...If we make it, I want to write about who we were before all of this.”

Kade’s expression changed.

She continued.

”Not just the battles. Not the victories. Not the names of the kingdoms.”

Her eyes moved across the room.

”The things we liked. The things we hated. Where we came from.”

A pause.

”What we wanted to do when we grew up.”

Kade looked toward the other Heroes.

Some were laughing.

Some were exhausted.

Some were trying to sleep.

None looked particularly sacred.

They looked human.

And suddenly, Ayame’s idea seemed more important than another thousand monuments.

Kade smiled.

”Yeah.”

She looked at him.

”Yeah?”

”Do that.”

Her expression softened.

He nodded toward the page.

”Write us as people.”

Ayame looked down.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Then she nodded.

”I will.”

VIII. When Heroes Are Too Tired to Dream

Eventually, the others began leaving.

Not all at once.

A few remained behind to finish conversations.

Others went to check their equipment.

The Airship Hero departed for the mooring fields, where his flight crews were preparing for the morning.

The War Horn Hero went to speak with the coalition’s signal officers.

The Staff Hero returned to the magical observation station.

The Hammer Hero was awakened by the Axe Hero and informed that sleeping in a damaged chair was a terrible idea.

He disagreed.

Loudly.

Then discovered he could barely stand because his injured leg had gone stiff.

The Axe Hero helped him anyway.

Kade watched them go.

”Beautiful friendship.”

Elias glanced toward him.

”You’re one to talk.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

”What?”

”You needed Ayame to order you into treatment earlier.”

”That was different.”

”How?”

”I’m charming.”

Elias stared.

Then sighed.

”Good night, Kade.”

The Gauntlet Hero grinned.

”Love you too.”

Elias stopped at the doorway.

For a moment, he looked as though he might answer with something insulting.

Then his expression softened.

”...Try to sleep.”

Kade blinked.

He hadn’t expected that.

”Yeah.”

Elias nodded.

Then left.

Kade watched the door close.

For several seconds, he sat quietly.

Then he looked toward Ayame.

She was gathering her papers.

”You’re still here?”

She glanced up.

”So are you.”

”Fair.”

She closed her Book.

The room was almost empty now.

Only the two of them remained.

Kade looked toward the seventeen chairs.

Most were vacant.

The dishes had been cleared.

The maps were folded.

And the laughter that had filled the room was fading into memory.

He stared at the chairs.

Then spoke.

”...Sixteen years.”

Ayame stopped moving.

She looked toward him.

”Yes.”

He shook his head slowly.

”Doesn’t feel real.”

She considered that.

Then sat down again.

”No.”

A pause.

”Sometimes it feels longer.”

Kade nodded.

”Yeah.”

”Sometimes shorter.”

He smiled faintly.

”That too.”

Ayame looked toward the dark windows.

”Do you remember the summoning chamber?”

Kade’s expression changed.

”...Unfortunately.”

”I remember the floor.”

He glanced toward her.

She continued.

”The marble. It was cold.”

Kade nodded.

”Yeah.”

”And the bells.”

His jaw tightened.

”Still hate bells.”

Ayame smiled faintly.

”So do I.”

She looked down at her Book.

”I remember looking for my schoolbag.”

Kade nodded.

”I remember.”

”I thought I’d dropped it.”

A pause.

”I was more frightened of losing my bag than the Book at first. I didn’t understand what was happening.”

Kade looked toward his Gauntlets.

”...Neither did I.”

Ayame smiled sadly.

”I remember you shouting at the priest.”

Kade laughed quietly.

”Sounds like me.”

”You were twelve.”

”Unfortunately.”

”And you asked why they hadn’t asked us.”

His smile disappeared.

He looked toward the empty chairs.

”Still waiting for an answer.”

Ayame lowered her eyes.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then she asked:

”Do you regret it?”

Kade looked toward her.

”...What?”

”Staying.”

He stared.

Ayame continued carefully.

”After we learned what happens when one of us dies. When we decided not to allow replacements.”

Her expression tightened.

”We could have tried harder to force the kingdoms to release us. We could have refused to fight. We could have...”

She stopped.

Kade watched her.

Ayame shook her head.

”I don’t know.”

He considered the question.

Then leaned back.

The chair creaked.

Neither of them cared.

”...I regret a lot of things.”

She listened.

”I regret the people we couldn’t save.”

A pause.

”The times I was too slow.”

He looked toward his hands.

”The times I was angry enough to say something stupid to someone who didn’t deserve it.”

Ayame’s mouth twitched.

”That narrows nothing.”

Kade grinned.

”Rude.”

Then his expression softened.

”I regret that we had to grow up here.”

The smile disappeared.

”I regret that you were ten.”

Ayame lowered her eyes.

”That Elias was fourteen.”

A pause.

”That any of us were kids.”

He looked toward the door.

”But I don’t regret keeping everyone alive.”

Ayame’s eyes glistened.

Kade continued.

”And I don’t regret helping the people who would’ve died if we walked away.”

A long silence followed.

Then he added:

”I just wish we could have done it without giving up our lives.”

Ayame nodded slowly.

”...Me too.”

The room was quiet.

Finally, she stood.

Kade looked up.

She stepped closer.

Then rested a hand on his shoulder.

Not a ceremonial gesture.

Not the touch of a Holy Hero blessing another.

Just an old friend.

”Kade.”

”Hm?”

”I’m glad you’re here.”

He blinked.

The words seemed to surprise him.

Ayame smiled.

”I know you didn’t want to be.”

He looked down.

”None of us did.”

”No.”

A pause.

”But I’m still glad I met you.”

Kade stared at her.

Then his expression softened.

”...Yeah.”

He smiled faintly.

”Me too, Fubuki.”

She nodded.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Ayame stepped back.

”Try to rest.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

”Everyone keeps telling me that.”

”Perhaps there’s a reason.”

”Conspiracy.”

”Almost certainly.”

He grinned.

She smiled.

Then gathered her Book and left the room.

The door closed quietly behind her.

And Kade Bher remained sitting beside seventeen chairs.

One occupied.

Sixteen empty.

All waiting for tomorrow.

 IX. Under the Wrong Stars

The night was beautiful.

Kade hated that.

He stood on the western observation terrace, looking across the Dawnward Expanse beneath a sky filled with stars.

Below him, the coalition camp stretched across the plains.

Thousands of small fires glimmered between the fortified positions.

Soldiers moved along the roads.

Wagons carried supplies toward the forward depots.

Distant airships hung against the dark sky, their navigation lights moving slowly above the mooring fields.

Somewhere, a horse whinnied.

Another answered.

A bell sounded from the lower fortress.

Only once.

Kade flinched.

Then sighed.

”...Still hate those.”

He leaned against the parapet.

The stone was cold beneath his hands.

The Gauntlets rested in their compact configuration, their markings dimmed to a faint glow.

For several minutes, he simply watched.

Sixteen years.

The words felt enormous.

He had spent half his life in a world that wasn’t his.

More than half, now.

He’d been twelve when they took him.

Twenty-eight.

The number still seemed strange.

He wasn’t particularly tall.

He wasn’t particularly imposing when the Gauntlets were quiet.

Put him in ordinary clothes, hide the scars, and most people wouldn’t immediately recognize the man who had broken hundreds of Wave monsters with his hands.

He supposed there was something funny about that.

Wysteria had built statues of him.

Several.

He’d seen one in Yollandia.

A towering figure with broad shoulders, long hair, and an expression of such noble determination that Kade had wondered whether the sculptor had accidentally been given somebody else’s description.

The statue had been almost twice his actual height.

He’d stood beside it for several minutes.

Then asked whether the pedestal was carrying most of the weight.

The priests had been displeased.

Kade smiled at the memory.

Then looked upward.

The stars were unfamiliar.

Still.

After sixteen years.

He knew their names now.

He could identify the constellations used by Wysterian navigators.

He understood which stars marked the seasonal changes and how sailors charted their positions beneath the night sky.

He’d learned to recognize the distant clusters that appeared only during certain months.

He knew all of that.

But they still weren’t the stars above Mizunokuni.

Kade closed his eyes.

The shrine road returned.

The stream.

The bridge.

The cedars.

Ranmei.

He tried to imagine her now.

Twenty-nine, if the years had passed the same way.

A grown woman.

Probably still irritating.

Probably still beautiful.

Definitely still capable of becoming furious if he called her Auntie.

Kade smiled.

”...Wonder if you’d still chase me.”

The night wind moved through his hair.

He looked toward the stars.

”Probably.”

A pause.

”Probably faster now.”

His smile softened.

Then he thought of Kuroha.

The memory hurt.

Not as sharply as it once had.

Time had changed the pain.

It had settled into something quieter.

Something that lived beneath everything else.

He remembered her parasol.

Her calm expression.

The way she’d speak when he asked an unusually difficult question.

He remembered how effortlessly she’d seemed to move between places that should have been separated by enormous distances.

He remembered the warmth of her hand against his head.

And the last moment.

Always the last moment.

The terror on her face.

He swallowed.

”...Aunt Kuroha.”

The words disappeared into the night.

He looked toward the eastern horizon.

Somewhere beyond those hills, an enormous disturbance was gathering.

The Black Wave.

The Final Wave.

The last one, if Ayame’s calculations were right.

He wanted to believe that.

He desperately wanted to believe it.

Not because he thought the fighting would be easy.

Quite the opposite.

The reports were worse than anything he’d seen in sixteen years.

The magical disturbances were growing.

The System had begun producing warnings that even Ayame couldn’t fully explain.

The other Heroes had been preparing their most dangerous Weapon forms.

The coalition had assembled every army it could spare.

And the entire world seemed to be holding its breath.

Kade was frightened.

He wasn’t ashamed of that.

Not anymore.

He had been frightened during his first Wave.

He had been frightened when Hammer nearly died.

He had been frightened when Ayame collapsed after using more magic than her body could safely endure.

He had been frightened countless times.

Fear didn’t bother him.

What bothered him was the possibility that tomorrow might be the day their promise finally broke.

Seventeen people.

Sixteen years.

No replacements.

He looked down at the Gauntlets.

”...Just one more.”

The words came quietly.

”One more, and maybe we can stop.”

He flexed his fingers.

The metal shifted.

A faint golden line moved along his knuckles.

He stared at the light.

Then whispered:

”Please.”

For a moment, he sounded almost like the boy he’d been.

The twelve-year-old who had stood in a summoning chamber asking to go home.

The boy who had believed his aunt would find him.

The boy who had promised a frightened little girl that they would figure something out.

He looked toward the stars again.

”Ranmei.”

The name felt warm.

Familiar.

Painful.

He smiled faintly.

”Sorry I’m late.”

A long silence followed.

Then he added:

”Really late.”

The wind moved across the terrace.

His eyes burned.

He blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then rubbed his face.

”...Idiot.”

He didn’t know whether he meant himself.

Or the world.

Probably both.

He looked toward the distant campfires.

Thousands of people were sleeping out there.

Some were frightened.

Some were praying.

Some were writing letters they hoped would be delivered if they didn’t return.

Some were trying to laugh with friends because there might not be another opportunity.

The Heroes weren’t the only ones facing tomorrow.

Kade knew that.

He always had.

That was part of why he’d stayed.

Part of why he’d kept fighting.

But tonight, he allowed himself one selfish thought.

He wanted to live.

Not merely survive another battle.

Not merely remain useful to another kingdom.

He wanted an ordinary life.

He wanted to wake up somewhere without a Weapon warning waiting at the edge of his vision.

He wanted to complain about breakfast.

He wanted to get into arguments with people who loved him.

He wanted to walk a road without checking whether there was a Wave breach at the other end.

He wanted to go home.

Kade lowered his head.

Then laughed quietly.

”...Sixteen years.”

The stars remained silent.

He looked toward them one last time.

”If anyone’s listening...”

His voice softened.

”...I’m still here.”

A pause.

”And I’m trying.”

He swallowed.

”Please don’t forget me.”

 X. One More Morning

Kade returned to the war room just before midnight.

He had expected it to be empty.

It wasn’t.

Elias sat beside the table.
