Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

I. An Office That Still Smelled of Coffee

Kade Bher woke up in a bed.

This was sufficiently unexpected that, for several seconds, he regarded the ceiling with considerable suspicion.

It was white.

There was a small crack near the ventilation grille.

A ceiling fan turned slowly overhead.

Sunlight entered through a partially drawn curtain.

And somewhere nearby, somebody had placed a glass of water on a bedside table.

Kade blinked.

Then blinked again.

His first thought was that he had missed an alarm.

His second was that somebody had sedated him.

His third was that, if somebody had sedated him, he intended to have a serious conversation with them.

He attempted to sit up.

A blanket slipped from his shoulders.

His body immediately informed him that the movement had been an unnecessarily ambitious undertaking.

Every muscle seemed to object.

His neck hurt.

His shoulders felt like somebody had replaced them with poorly lubricated machinery.

And his head possessed the unpleasant heaviness of a man who had spent too many consecutive hours surviving on coffee and increasingly questionable decisions.

Kade stopped.

Looked around.

The room belonged to the command residence.

His command residence, specifically.

Which answered one question.

Unfortunately, it raised several others.

He distinctly remembered being on the eastern seawall.

Aster had been there.

He remembered sitting with her.

Her leaning against him.

The warmth of her shoulder.

The way he’d pulled her close without thinking.

He remembered her bringing him bread.

He remembered talking.

Then—

Nothing.

Kade slowly lowered his head into his hands.

“Oh, for the love of…”

His voice was hoarse.

He looked toward the clock.

Early afternoon.

He stared.

Then sat upright so quickly that his neck protested.

“What?”

He reached for the bedside telephone.

Stopped.

Then noticed a folded note resting beneath the water glass.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Neat enough to be readable.

Cheerful enough to be irritating.

He opened it.

You fell asleep.

I considered charging you for the use of my shoulder, but decided that would be cruel.

You’re welcome.

Also, Chief Fenwick says you are not allowed to declare war on the people who carried you back to your room.

Doctor Holt says you have to eat.

Hana says you have to stop treating yourself like a damaged machine with an unlimited service life.

I say all three of them are right.

— Aster

A smaller line had been added at the bottom.

P.S. You were actually pretty cute when you finally stopped looking angry at the ocean.

Kade stared.

For several seconds, he remained completely motionless.

Then he slowly lowered the note.

His ears felt warm.

He looked toward the door.

Then back at the note.

Then toward the ceiling.

“…Menace.”

The word emerged without any real irritation.

He read the note again.

For a moment, the corner of his mouth lifted.

Then he noticed something else.

A small drawing occupied the lower right corner.

Two stick figures sat on a wall.

One had a conspicuously large red ribbon.

The other was considerably shorter.

The ribbon-wearing figure had written NAP TIME above the other one’s head.

Kade covered his face.

There was a long silence.

Then he laughed.

Quietly.

Once.

And for several seconds afterward, he simply sat there holding the note.

The morning returned to him in pieces.

Aster leaning against him.

The way she’d gone still when he pulled her closer.

Her ridiculous arguments.

The bread.

Her hand resting over his.

The strange, unfamiliar feeling of not having to answer a question immediately.

He remembered telling her he didn’t know how to stop.

He remembered her answer.

You don’t have to stop all at once.

Kade looked toward the note.

For a moment, his expression softened.

Then he carefully folded it.

Not carelessly.

Not into a crumpled square he’d throw away later.

He folded it along its original creases and placed it inside the small drawer beside the bed.

Some things deserved to be kept.

Even if the author was an insufferable Fletcher-class destroyer.

Especially then.

Twenty minutes later, Kade entered his office wearing a clean shirt, a freshly fastened uniform jacket, and an expression of determined irritation.

He had washed.

Changed.

Eaten the meal that somebody had left for him.

And discovered that, despite all his objections, approximately four hours of uninterrupted sleep had accomplished something coffee had been failing to accomplish for the better part of two days.

He still felt exhausted.

He still remembered every casualty report.

But the world no longer seemed to be moving through a layer of thick glass.

That was something.

His office, unfortunately, had not improved.

It smelled of old coffee, paper, warm electrical equipment, and the faint metallic scent carried in from the repair district whenever the wind changed direction.

Several folders had accumulated on the desk.

A fresh stack of intelligence summaries rested beside the telephone.

The map of the Pacific remained pinned to the wall.

And the casualty register sat in a separate tray.

Kade looked toward it.

Fifteen.

His expression tightened.

The three newly recovered Pendants had changed the count.

Eleven secured.

Four missing.

He knew the numbers.

He had written them himself.

But seeing the register still made his stomach feel unpleasant.

For several seconds, he stood beside the desk without moving.

Then he reached for the folder.

Opened it.

And began reading.

The first page listed the confirmed sinkings.

The second contained the recovery status.

The third documented the unresolved cases.

He studied each one.

Slowly.

He hadn’t intended to.

He’d already reviewed the information.

But the names were there.

And he couldn’t bring himself to treat them like something that could be skimmed.

Yūgumo.

Kiri.

Suzu.

Takao Two.

La Galissonnière.

Le Fantasque.

Northampton.

Mahan.

Hibari.

Brooklyn.

And the others whose full identity and service records were still being reconciled after the sudden collapse of the PCA formation.

Some had been Horizon girls.

Some had worn PCA colors that very morning.

By nightfall, they had fought together.

By sunrise, fifteen were gone.

Kade lowered his eyes.

For a moment, he remembered the little silver objects resting in their protective cases.

Then the four empty spaces.

His jaw tightened.

He turned the page.

A supplementary recovery note had been attached.

The three Pendants found on the beach were being preserved in accordance with the established procedures.

No damage severe enough to prevent identification had been found.

That was good.

It was genuinely good.

He read the note twice.

Then placed it beside the register.

For several seconds, the office remained quiet.

Outside, a maintenance truck passed along the service road.

Someone called for a replacement lifting chain.

A radio crackled in the neighboring administrative room.

The station was moving again.

Not normally.

Not happily.

But moving.

Kade looked toward the window.

The lagoon was visible beyond the buildings.

Several damaged rigs rested at their maintenance berths.

A repair crew was guiding a cruiser mount beneath a suspended crane hook.

Farther away, the broken shape of the western coastal battery remained surrounded by engineers.

There was so much work.

He reached for his coffee.

Discovered the cup was empty.

Considered asking for another.

Then remembered Aster’s note.

And Irena’s likely response.

He sighed.

“Fine.”

He reached for the water instead.

The knock came at thirteen forty-six.

Three quick taps.

Measured.

Deliberate.

Kade looked up.

“Come in.”

The door opened.

Lieutenant Aaron Voss entered carrying a document case, two sealed folders, and a face that Kade immediately disliked.

Not because the man looked angry.

Because he looked worried.

Aaron was not easily worried.

Skeptical, yes.

Occasionally annoyed.

Frequently unimpressed by unverified claims.

But genuinely worried?

That required something special.

Kade set down his water.

“Aaron.”

The intelligence officer stopped beside the desk.

“Commander.”

For a moment, the two looked at one another.

Then Kade glanced toward the folders.

“Please tell me that’s a collection of restaurant menus.”

Aaron didn’t smile.

Kade’s expression changed.

“Oh, that’s unpleasant.”

The lieutenant approached.

“I’ve received a consolidated intelligence package from the outer Pacific reporting network.”

Kade leaned back.

“Define consolidated.”

“Survivor statements, recorded radio traffic, photographs, patrol observations, several intelligence summaries from independent settlements, and reports forwarded through surviving communications relays.”

The Commander frowned.

“How current?”

“Mixed. Some sightings are less than forty-eight hours old. Others are several weeks old and only reached us after being carried by ship.”

Kade considered that.

Aaron continued.

“The reports were initially treated as unrelated incidents.”

“Why?”

“Because the descriptions didn’t agree.”

A pause.

“And because several of them described ships that do not exist in the original FRONTLINE HEARTS database.”

Kade went still.

For several seconds, he stared.

Then his eyes narrowed.

“New ship classes?”

Aaron hesitated.

“Not only ship classes.”

The silence stretched.

Kade slowly lowered his chair’s backrest.

Sat upright.

“Close the door.”

Aaron turned.

Did so.

The latch clicked.

Kade pointed toward the opposite chair.

“Sit.”

The lieutenant obeyed.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Kade looked toward the document case.

“Aaron.”

“Yes?”

“How bad?”

The intelligence officer met his eyes.

And answered:

“I think what happened at Horizon was part of something considerably larger.”

The Commander did not move.

Outside, a truck engine started.

Somewhere in the harbor, a metal beam rang beneath a hammer.

The ordinary sounds continued.

Kade stared at the folders.

Then spoke quietly.

“Show me.”

 II. The Fleet Nobody Remembered

Aaron did not begin with the Princesses.

That was the first thing Kade noticed.

Instead, the lieutenant opened the larger folder and removed a map.

It wasn’t the familiar tactical map of Horizon’s immediate approaches.

It showed a broad section of the Pacific.

Island chains.

Shipping routes.

Surviving civilian settlements.

Former player bases.

Known Blackwake-controlled regions.

Areas that remained uncertain because nobody had conducted a reliable survey since Hour Zero.

And dozens of small markings.

Some black.

Some red.

Some outlined in blue.

Kade leaned forward.

For several seconds, he studied the map.

Then looked up.

“That’s a lot of contacts.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

“Independent sightings?”

“Primarily. We’ve removed obvious duplicates where we could establish that two observers saw the same force.”

The Commander scanned the western sectors.

Clusters of new markings occupied several sea lanes.

Others followed the approaches to islands with surviving ports.

A few appeared along the margins of known Blackwake-controlled territory.

Then he noticed something strange.

The markings were not scattered randomly.

They formed lines.

Not perfectly.

Not with the clean geometry of a peacetime naval traffic chart.

But patterns were emerging.

Kade raised an eyebrow.

“Are those patrol routes?”

Aaron nodded slowly.

“We believe so.”

The Commander looked toward him.

“Believe?”

“Repeated observations from different dates. Ships moving along similar tracks, maintaining roughly comparable patrol boundaries, and returning toward the same poorly surveyed regions.”

Kade stared at the map again.

His expression tightened.

“You’re telling me they’re holding stations.”

“In several areas, yes.”

The Commander leaned back.

For a moment, he considered that.

Blackwake ships had always been dangerous.

Nobody at Horizon had believed otherwise.

The original game had made that much clear, and the real-world Crisis had proven it brutally.

The enemy could ambush convoys.

Destroy patrols.

Attack fortified positions.

And even before the Princesses appeared, its formations had demonstrated enough coordination to overwhelm unprepared defenders.

But the patterns Aaron was describing were different.

A warship that attacked a convoy was a danger.

A warship that guarded a shipping lane for weeks was evidence of an assignment.

Kade looked toward the map.

Then asked:

“What are they protecting?”

Aaron’s expression became grave.

“That is one of our questions.”

The Commander nodded.

“Of course it is.”

The lieutenant opened the first photographic envelope.

“Let’s begin with the conventional units.”

Kade glanced up.

“Conventional?”

Aaron gave him a careful look.

“Native Blackwake. Not corrupted Keelborn.”

The Commander stilled.

For a moment, he looked toward the photographs.

Then nodded.

“Right.”

Aaron continued.

“We’ve been separating those two categories aggressively since the Horizon engagement. Humanoid appearance alone is not evidence of corruption.”

Kade’s expression softened slightly.

“Good.”

The lieutenant placed the first photograph on the desk.

It was grainy.

Taken at considerable distance.

The sea occupied most of the frame.

Near the center stood a massive black shape.

A narrow, armored body.

Heavy gun housings.

A long carapace sweeping backward like the fin of an enormous predatory animal.

And, above the machinery, something resembling a pale human torso.

The face was indistinct.

The weapons were not.

Kade leaned closer.

“Battleship?”

“Probably.”

“Those barrels look wrong.”

Aaron nodded.

“They do.”

A second photograph followed.

Another enormous vessel.

This one broader.

Heavier.

Its main gun housings were distributed around great armored structures resembling jaws.

A pale face sat between them.

The surrounding black armor looked almost like a fortress built around a living creature.

Kade studied it.

Then looked toward the first photograph.

“Two different types.”

“Yes.”

“Neither’s in the game.”

“Not in these configurations.”

The Commander stared.

He’d spent years learning the original FRONTLINE HEARTS ship roster.

So had thousands of other players.

Recognizing an enemy’s class used to tell a commander a great deal.

Approximate armament.

Armor.

Speed.

Likely behavior.

Torpedo capability.

Air threat.

That knowledge had never been perfect.

But it had been useful.

Now he was looking at two capital ships that resembled nothing he’d ever fought in the game.

He looked toward Aaron.

“What are we calling them?”

The lieutenant consulted his notes.

“Provisional designations. Razorwake-class fast battleship and Ironvault-class heavy battleship.”

Kade repeated the names silently.

Then nodded.

“Appropriate.”

Aaron placed a third image on the table.

Kade stared.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then slowly leaned forward.

“…What the hell is that?”

The photograph showed a pale, female-shaped central figure accompanied by an enormous dark sea-creature structure.

Heavy artillery barrels extended from its flanks.

Mechanical appendages curved around the central body.

And above the creature’s armored back, several structures resembled aircraft-handling equipment.

Kade looked from one weapon assembly to another.

Then back at Aaron.

“That’s not a carrier.”

“No.”

“Not just a battleship, either.”

“Correct.”

The Commander narrowed his eyes.

“Aircraft?”

“Confirmed in one report. Small reconnaissance aircraft were seen launching from the upper structures.”

Kade lowered his gaze.

“Main battery?”

“Heavy guns. Exact caliber uncertain.”

“Torpedoes?”

Aaron paused.

Then slid forward another report.

Kade read it.

Looked up.

Then stared at the photograph again.

“You’re joking.”

“No.”

The Commander tapped the page.

“Aircraft, battleship artillery, and torpedoes?”

“Yes.”

“In one native Blackwake unit?”

“Yes.”

Kade slowly lowered the paper.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he leaned back.

“Of course.”

Aaron raised an eyebrow.

The Commander looked toward the ceiling.

“Of course the ocean decided to invent a battleship with a flight deck and an attitude problem.”

The lieutenant almost smiled.

Almost.

Then his expression returned to seriousness.

“We’re calling it the Tempestwing-class aviation battleship.”

Kade looked toward the photograph again.

The monstrous sea creature stared back.

For a moment, he imagined a destroyer squadron approaching one of those things.

Attempting a torpedo attack.

Only to discover that the enemy could launch aircraft, fire heavy guns, and answer with its own torpedoes.

He swallowed.

“That’s going to make someone very unhappy.”

Aaron nodded.

“I suspect it already has.”

 The next photographs showed carriers.

Not the familiar Blackwake carrier forms from the original game.

These possessed more complex machinery.

Larger aircraft-handling structures.

Additional defensive weapons.

Some had distinctly humanoid central bodies.

Others were almost entirely monstrous.

One resembled a pale figure suspended beneath a vast black skull with a flight-deck-like surface extending from its crown.

Another possessed an enormous tooth-filled mouth beneath a rounded armored body.

A third showed a more specialized version of that same broad design, with enlarged launch structures and strange sensor fittings rising from the black carapace.

Kade studied the photographs.

“Three?”

“Two broad families, with a distinctive advanced light-carrier subtype.”

Aaron pointed.

“Widowcrown fleet carrier. Gullet light carrier. Hawkmaw strike-carrier variation.”

The Commander examined the aircraft visible in one image.

They were dark.

Narrow-winged.

Their outlines looked almost familiar, but not quite.

There were too many hard angles.

Some possessed strange protrusions beneath their wings.

Others appeared to carry ordnance in positions no ordinary aircraft designer would have chosen.

Kade frowned.

“Those don’t match Reina’s entire aircraft group.”

“No.”

“Different designs?”

“Several.”

The lieutenant produced another photograph.

This one had been taken from the deck of a merchant escort before its communications ceased.

Dark aircraft crossed beneath a low cloud layer.

One had a swollen forward fuselage and an unusually broad wing root.

Another was leaner, with a long nose and distinct underwing weapons.

A third resembled a night fighter, its silhouette broken by protruding equipment.

Kade examined them.

“New aircraft.”

Aaron nodded.

“Fighters, torpedo bombers, reconnaissance types, and possibly specialized night attackers.”

“How many?”

“Insufficient evidence for a complete count.”

The Commander looked up.

“Good answer.”

Aaron blinked.

Kade gestured toward the report.

“I’d rather know you don’t know than have you invent a number because it sounds reassuring.”

The intelligence officer nodded.

“Agreed.”

The Commander studied the photograph again.

He thought of Yuna.

Shōkaku.

Their exhausted fairy aircrews.

The girls who had spent the entire night trying to stop Reina’s attacks.

If the Blackwake was fielding multiple new carrier families, with aircraft the defenders had never encountered before—

Kade lowered the photograph.

“Yuna needs this.”

Aaron nodded.

“I’m preparing a separate aviation assessment.”

“Have her and Shōkaku review it together. No assumptions based on the old aircraft roster.”

“Understood.”

“And include the damaged aircraft photographs from Horizon.”

“Already indexed.”

Kade nodded.

Then leaned forward.

“All right.”

His expression hardened.

“Show me the cruisers.”

III. Things That Wore Human Faces

The first cruiser photograph disturbed Kade for an entirely different reason.

At first glance, the subject looked almost like a Keelborn.

A woman stood above the water.

Pale skin.

Long dark hair.

A recognizable face.

Her eyes appeared reddish beneath the shadow of her bangs.

Then Kade looked lower.

And the resemblance stopped being comforting.

The machinery surrounding her had no recognizable human engineering behind it.

Huge black armored appendages curled around her body.

Two of them ended in structures resembling the open jaws of deep-sea predators.

Heavy gun barrels projected through the armored surfaces.

Long, flexible cables trailed beneath them, vanishing into the water.

The woman’s legs were partly hidden within the central machinery, but there was no obvious place where the equipment could have been comfortably worn or removed.

It looked less like a person wearing rigging and more like a living creature whose body had grown around naval weapons.

Kade studied the image.

Then looked toward Aaron.

“Pendants?”

The lieutenant understood immediately.

“None visible.”

“Any missing-girl identification?”

“No.”

“Any reason to believe this one was ever Keelborn?”

Aaron shook his head.

“None that we can establish. Similar forms were present in the original Blackwake population, although not with this precise machinery. Our working classification is native Blackwake.”

Kade nodded slowly.

“Good.”

Then he glanced down again.

The woman’s expression in the photograph was almost playful.

Her mouth was slightly open.

The gun-bearing jaws around her seemed to echo it.

He exhaled.

“That’s going to cause confusion.”

Aaron raised an eyebrow.

“The humanoid appearance?”

“Yeah.”

The Commander tapped the photograph.

“A girl sees something like that through a searchlight and hesitates because she thinks it might be another Keelborn.”

He looked up.

“Or the opposite. Someone sees a corrupted Keelborn and decides it’s only another native Blackwake creature.”

Aaron nodded.

“That concern appears in several survivor reports.”

Kade considered the implication.

Then spoke firmly.

“We cannot make human appearance the distinction.”

“Agreed.”

“No shooting something solely because it looks monstrous. No assuming something is recoverable because it looks human.”

A pause.

“We identify it by behavior, weapons, context, and whatever evidence we can actually obtain.”

Aaron nodded.

“Precisely.”

Kade returned to the photographs.

“What is this one?”

“Ravenblade-class heavy cruiser.”

The Commander examined its armament.

Eight-inch-class artillery.

Torpedo equipment.

A long, relatively narrow support structure.

Fast.

Predatory.

Unpleasant.

The next photograph showed a much bulkier white-haired figure surrounded by a segmented black carapace. Its machinery was covered in sensor-like protrusions, and a long armored structure rose behind it like a spinal column.

“Thornwake,” Aaron said. “Another heavy cruiser family. At least one variant operates reconnaissance aircraft.”

Kade frowned.

“From a cruiser that size?”

“Apparently.”

“Interesting.”

The word contained absolutely no enthusiasm.

Aaron placed a third image beside it.

This one showed a small pale figure almost overwhelmed by enormous, chained, black mechanical heads.

Heavy gun barrels protruded from armored jaws.

Several structures carried red lights.

And the chains hanging beneath the rigging gave it the appearance of something dragged out of a shipwreck and assembled by a deeply disturbed engineer.

Kade stared.

For several seconds, he didn’t speak.

Then he pointed.

“Those are too large for ordinary cruiser guns.”

Aaron nodded.

“Likely approximately eleven-inch-class weapons, based on the best dimensional estimates.”

Kade turned toward him.

“On a cruiser?”

“That’s the apparent classification.”

The Commander looked back.

“Chainmaw?”

Aaron blinked.

“How did you—”

Kade tapped the great black jaws.

“Lucky guess.”

The intelligence officer sighed.

“Yes. Chainmaw-class siege cruiser.”

Kade leaned back.

He considered that.

A native enemy cruiser with weapons approaching older capital-ship calibers.

An ordinary Blackwake creature.

Not a Princess.

Not a unique commander.

Something that could appear in an escort or bombardment formation.

He looked toward the map again.

“How many sightings?”

“Very few reliable ones. Two likely observations and a possible third.”

“Could be the same individual?”

“Yes.”

Kade nodded.

“Then don’t report three.”

Aaron’s expression softened slightly.

“I haven’t.”

“Good.”

The Commander picked up the Ravenblade photograph again.

For several seconds, he studied the woman’s face.

She looked almost cheerful.

He imagined her leading a destroyer attack against a damaged Keelborn.

Not because she’d once been a girl from a friendly harbor.

Not because some Pendant had been captured beneath the water.

But because she was a native Blackwake creature, fully equipped for the task.

The distinction mattered.

It also meant the enemy could field humanoid naval combatants without first taking somebody from Horizon.

Kade placed the photograph down.

“Keep going.”

 The light-cruiser folder was thicker.

That surprised him.

He’d expected the battleship and carrier reports to contain the greatest variation.

Instead, Aaron produced image after image of smaller ships with wildly different designs.

Some looked like the older, monstrous Blackwake units.

Others were far more sophisticated.

A compact creature with a huge mouth and guns projecting from its upper armor.

A pale, nearly spherical central body enclosed by overlapping black jaws.

A strange two-headed structure with weapon mounts distributed along its shoulders.

A small pale figure almost buried beneath enormous armored gauntlets.

A woman surrounded by cables and multiple smaller mechanical heads.

And another humanoid with long dark clothing, red-black hornlike structures, and a great curved appendage rising behind her like a scythe.

Kade frowned.

“They’re all light cruisers?”

“Broadly.”

“That’s an impressively unhelpful answer.”

Aaron nodded.

“I agree.”

The Commander raised an eyebrow.

The lieutenant continued.

“The photographs suggest at least six recurring families. Their armaments and equipment vary considerably.”

Kade leaned forward.

Aaron arranged the images into two rows.

“Gunspine and Hollowjaw appear to be escort-oriented designs. Twinfang is faster, possibly an interceptor. Wardclaw carries substantial antiaircraft and antisubmarine equipment.”

He pointed toward the woman surrounded by cables.

“Choirmaw. Heavily armed. More resilient than its size suggests.”

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from NovelPhoenix. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

Then the dark-clad figure with the curved structure.

“Scytheveil. Rapid-firing six-inch-class artillery, apparently assisted by unusually effective fire-control equipment.”

Kade studied the last photograph.

“Effective how?”

Aaron opened a witness report.

“An escort captain described a Blackwake cruiser engaging two maneuvering destroyers at considerable range. The first salvo missed. The second straddled one target. The third hit it while it was changing course.”

Kade’s expression tightened.

“Spotting correction?”

“Likely.”

“Radar?”

“Possibly. The observer reported a rotating structure on the enemy’s upper rigging.”

The Commander considered that.

Then looked toward the Wardclaw.

“And this one?”

“An escort group operating north of a reported Blackwake-controlled island was attacked by a human submarine.”

Kade leaned forward.

Aaron continued.

“The submarine’s captain reported acquiring an apparent merchant-type target under escort. Before she could establish a firing solution, the escort changed course toward her position.”

The Commander frowned.

“Coincidence?”

“Possible.”

Aaron turned the page.

“The submarine then reported active underwater detection signals. The Blackwake light cruiser and two destroyers began coordinated antisubmarine maneuvers.”

Kade went still.

For several seconds, he stared.

Then asked:

“Did the submarine survive?”

“Yes. She escaped after an attack that damaged her outer hull.”

“Any explanation for how they found her?”

“None confirmed.”

Kade looked toward the photograph.

The Wardclaw’s armored structures were thick and angular.

Its gun housings clustered around the small central body.

Several strange protrusions extended beneath the waterline.

He exhaled.

“They’re developing proper antisubmarine escorts.”

Aaron nodded.

“That is our assessment.”

The Commander leaned back.

For a moment, he thought of Alice Lasky.

The Allen M. Sumner-class girl had spent the first day of the PCA invasion hunting a submarine inside Horizon’s lagoon.

She’d done it by listening.

By distinguishing machinery from background noise.

By treating each contact as a problem to be solved instead of a conveniently labeled game unit.

That skill had saved lives.

Now the Blackwake appeared to be developing units capable of doing the same thing to its enemies.

Kade looked toward Aaron.

“Get these to Alice.”

“Already planned.”

“And don’t just give her photographs. I want every acoustic recording we have.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“Understood.”

Kade studied the six light-cruiser families again.

Six.

Not six individual ships.

Six different apparent design families.

Each with possible variations.

All previously unknown to the players.

He slowly rubbed his forehead.

“We’re not going to be able to teach every girl to recognize all of these overnight.”

Aaron’s expression became serious.

“No.”

Kade looked toward the images.

“Then we teach threat identification.”

He pointed.

“Big mouth and clustered guns doesn’t tell me what it’ll do. Sonar does. A rotating search aerial does. A particular torpedo arrangement does. The aircraft launch equipment does.”

Aaron nodded.

“Capability first. Names second.”

“Exactly.”

The Commander looked toward the map.

“We don’t have the luxury of being wrong just because the enemy looks unfamiliar.”

The torpedo-cruiser photograph lay at the bottom of the folder.

Kade nearly laughed when he saw it.

Not because it was funny.

Because the absurdity was beginning to feel personally directed.

The creature resembled a pale torso emerging from an enormous armored predator’s head.

Its shieldlike upper structure was lined with launch equipment.

Several gun barrels projected from the machinery, but the most striking feature was the concentration of torpedo tubes.

Far too many to ignore.

Kade picked up the image.

“Let me guess.”

Aaron waited.

“Fast. Awful. Loves torpedoes.”

“Essentially.”

“Viperwake?”

Aaron blinked.

Then sighed.

“You’ve read the preliminary designations.”

“No. I just know how you name things.”

The lieutenant looked mildly offended.

Kade almost smiled.

Then he examined the weapons more closely.

For several seconds, his expression darkened.

“That’s a lot of torpedoes.”

“Yes.”

“Any confirmed launches?”

“One report describes a coordinated salvo from at least two similar units.”

“Against what?”

“A convoy escort attempting to withdraw from a surface engagement.”

Kade lowered the photograph.

“Of course.”

Aaron looked toward him.

The Commander tapped the launchers.

“This is what they did to us last night.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“Similar effect, though not necessarily the same ship family.”

“They don’t need to sink every girl directly.”

Kade looked toward the map.

“They just need to make the screen turn in the wrong direction.”

A pause.

“Then the next group kills whoever gets separated.”

Aaron’s expression hardened.

“That is consistent with the reported attacks.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Kade quietly set the photograph aside.

He’d begun the briefing expecting bad news.

He was receiving an entirely new vocabulary for it.

 The destroyers were worse.

Not because every one was individually more powerful than a cruiser.

Because there were so many designs.

Aaron had arranged them by apparent family resemblance.

The early-looking units were still predatory.

A narrow black head with a single glowing eye.

A flattened jaw with hooked aft structures.

An upright sharklike body.

A tall, blade-shaped form trailing long mechanical appendages.

Then a more elaborate rounded creature with an enormous circular mouth and an armored gun housing emerging from its head.

Kade studied them.

“Needlefin. Hooktooth. Dartfin. Knifecrest…”

Aaron nodded.

“And Violetmaw.”

The Commander looked toward the rounded design.

Several nearly identical examples appeared in the accompanying photographs.

Different locations.

Different dates.

Similar dimensions.

Comparable armament.

Kade frowned.

“Mass-produced?”

“That is one possibility.”

“Do we know?”

“No.”

Aaron pointed toward the images.

“But the resemblance is sufficiently close that we’re treating them as a common family, possibly with standardized configurations.”

Kade considered that.

The Blackwake had always possessed numerous ordinary combatants.

But a standardized escort destroyer was something different from an unpredictable collection of monsters.

It could form a consistent screen.

Operate with known spacing.

Be replaced when destroyed without forcing the entire formation to change.

The Commander looked toward Aaron.

“Any evidence they’re being deliberately deployed in similar groups?”

“Yes.”

The lieutenant showed him a report from a small island patrol.

Four nearly identical Violetmaws had been observed escorting a large Blackwake transport.

Two maintained positions ahead.

Two remained on the flanks.

When an unidentified aircraft approached, the nearest pair turned outward while the others stayed with the transport.

Kade read the description.

Then looked up.

“That isn’t a swarm.”

“No.”

“That’s a screen.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

The Commander stared at the report.

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then asked:

“And the last photograph?”

Aaron hesitated.

Only slightly.

But Kade noticed.

The lieutenant removed a separate envelope.

Placed it on the desk.

Then slid out the contents.

Kade looked down.

And stopped.

The central figure was unmistakably humanoid.

A pale woman with long black hair.

Red eyes.

A dark uniformlike dress.

A thin, almost playful smile.

Surrounding her were several smaller mechanical creatures.

They grinned with oversized mouths.

Their armored surfaces carried guns, torpedo equipment, and strange underwater weapon structures.

Long black tendrils connected them to the central body.

Kade stared.

For several seconds, he could only look at the woman’s face.

Then he slowly raised his eyes.

“That’s a destroyer?”

Aaron nodded.

“Apparently.”

“Not a cruiser?”

“Not according to the available dimensions and weapon estimates.”

Kade looked down again.

The humanoid figure smiled from the photograph.

Not kindly.

Not maliciously in any human sense he could establish.

Just with an expression that looked alarmingly natural.

He swallowed.

“Pendant?”

“None visible.”

“Keelborn identification?”

“None.”

Aaron turned the image over.

Several notes had been attached.

“Three observations of similar forms, possibly different individuals. All were associated with native Blackwake destroyer groups.”

Kade frowned.

“Then why the humanoid body?”

“We don’t know.”

“Could it be a Princess?”

Aaron shook his head.

“We have no evidence supporting that classification. The units appear to function as advanced conventional destroyers, sometimes leading smaller groups.”

Kade lowered the photograph.

For several seconds, he remained still.

Then he nodded.

“Right.”

The lieutenant pointed toward the notes.

“Widowspine-class.”

The Commander examined the weapons.

Five-inch-class guns.

A substantial torpedo battery.

Antisubmarine equipment resembling an advanced ahead-throwing projector.

And enough distributed machinery to make the little creature look more like a compact weapons platform than a conventional destroyer.

Kade exhaled.

“That’s going to be a nightmare for our destroyer girls.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

The Commander studied the woman’s face again.

He imagined someone like Shiori seeing that creature in a searchlight beam.

A humanoid Blackwake destroyer.

No Pendant.

No evidence of a lost Keelborn.

Just an enemy with a face.

Kade lowered the image.

Then spoke firmly.

“We need this distinction included in every intelligence briefing.”

Aaron nodded.

“Native humanoid Blackwake are not automatically corrupted Keelborn.”

“Exactly.”

The Commander looked toward the photographs.

Then continued.

“And we don’t invent a tragic backstory for every one of them because we feel uncomfortable shooting something that looks human.”

Aaron considered that.

Then nodded.

“Understood.”

Kade looked toward the Blackwake destroyer again.

Its red eyes stared from the photograph.

For one moment, he felt a new kind of dread.

The enemy had become capable of appearing human without ever having been human.

And somewhere beyond the island, actual Keelborn were being transformed into things that looked monstrous.

The surface was becoming a terrible place to trust appearances.

IV. A Navy Needs More Than Guns

Aaron waited until Kade had finished examining the destroyers.

Then he placed two smaller photographs on the desk.

The first showed three little creatures moving just above the surface.

They were black and pale.

Their mouths were enormous.

Their bodies carried compact weapon structures.

At first glance, they seemed almost ridiculous.

Kade leaned closer.

“Those look like imps.”

“That’s what the observers called them.”

“Should I be offended that the Blackwake is apparently fielding gremlins?”

Aaron remained perfectly serious.

“They sank a patrol boat.”

Kade stopped smiling.

The lieutenant pointed toward the first image.

“Blueimp torpedo packs. Small grouped attackers. Extremely difficult to identify early in poor visibility.”

Then the second.

“Redcap fast attack packs. Similar scale. More sophisticated weapons, including light antiaircraft equipment.”

Kade examined the photographs.

Tiny compared with battleships.

Small compared with ordinary destroyers.

But capable of launching torpedoes into vulnerable waters.

He thought of the narrow passages around Horizon.

The reefs.

The damaged western defenses.

Then looked up.

“If those get inside the lagoon approaches…”

Aaron nodded.

“They could create serious problems.”

Kade rubbed his forehead.

“Wonderful.”

The lieutenant turned the page.

“There’s more.”

Kade looked toward him.

For a moment, he simply stared.

Then sighed.

“Of course there is.”

 The submarine images came next.

Most were poor.

One was taken through a periscope.

Another showed a strange pale shape breaking the surface near a damaged escort.

The third had been sketched by a sailor who survived an encounter with a creature that surfaced briefly after attacking her ship.

Kade studied the first.

A long-haired humanoid figure partially enclosed inside a dark, narrow armored body.

The machinery around her face resembled a breathing apparatus.

The second looked almost frozen.

Blue-white skin.

Monstrous jaws.

A compact submarine structure extending beneath the water.

The third showed a pale, female-shaped figure with long hair hanging across her face, one arm extended above a living-looking submarine hull.

Kade lowered the images.

“Native?”

“Working assumption.”

“Pendants?”

“None reported.”

“Names?”

“Veilfin, Coldmouth, and Palehand.”

The Commander considered that.

Then leaned forward.

“Anything unusual besides appearance?”

Aaron opened the accompanying notes.

“Yes.”

The first report described a submarine contact that tracked a merchant formation for several hours without firing.

The second involved two probable submarines attempting to intercept a ship after it altered course to avoid a surface patrol.

The third concerned a small coastal escort that believed it had escaped one underwater contact, only to encounter another along its revised route.

Kade looked toward the map.

For several seconds, he stared.

Then slowly raised his eyes.

“They’re laying patrol lines.”

Aaron nodded.

“That’s one interpretation.”

“Or they’re passing contacts to one another.”

“Also possible.”

The Commander leaned back.

For a moment, he thought of Alice again.

Her headphones.

The carefully plotted acoustic bearings.

The way she had identified the unfamiliar scraping sounds before the Princess-led fleet arrived.

He exhaled.

“She’s going to hate this.”

Aaron’s expression softened slightly.

“Probably.”

Kade pointed toward the images.

“Make sure she gets a proper break before anyone buries her in this.”

The lieutenant blinked.

For a moment, he seemed surprised.

Then nodded.

“Understood.”

The Commander looked toward the submarine reports.

A new underwater threat was bad enough.

An organized underwater reconnaissance network was worse.

The Blackwake did not need to destroy every ship it detected.

It could follow them.

Observe their routes.

Report their destinations.

And send other forces to intercept them.

Kade studied the map.

For a moment, he imagined a civilian convoy spending several days at sea, unaware that a Blackwake submarine had been following it since departure.

Then he closed the file.

“What else?”

Aaron was quiet.

For several seconds, he regarded his Commander.

Then opened the final conventional-force folder.

And removed a photograph of a transport.

 The creature was enormous.

Not a battleship.

Not a cruiser.

It possessed no obvious capital-ship main battery.

Its body was broad and rounded, covered in overlapping black armored plates.

A pale humanoid upper section rose from the forward structure.

Beneath it stretched a deep, whale-like hull with mechanical organs and cargo-bearing assemblies arranged along the flanks.

Several small defensive guns protruded from its armor.

Others appeared to have been added to an advanced variant visible in the second photograph.

Kade stared.

For several seconds, he seemed unsure what he was looking at.

Then his expression changed.

“Transport.”

Aaron nodded.

“Burdenback-class.”

The Commander leaned forward.

“Confirmed cargo?”

“No direct inspection. However, observers reported large armored structures secured to the aft body, and one sighting suggests smaller units were traveling close aboard.”

Kade considered that.

Then looked toward the map.

“Where?”

Aaron pointed toward a series of observed routes near Blackwake-controlled waters.

Three sightings.

Separated by days.

A similar class of vessel moving between areas that might possess protected anchorages.

Escorts around each formation.

Not particularly large battle groups.

Enough to keep opportunistic attackers away.

Kade slowly lowered the photograph.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

Then he looked toward Aaron.

“That’s worse.”

The lieutenant raised an eyebrow.

“Worse than the battleships?”

“Potentially.”

Kade pointed toward the transport.

“A battleship can sink a convoy.”

Aaron nodded.

“A carrier can stop one reaching port.”

“Yes.”

“But a transport means somebody’s moving something.”

The lieutenant remained silent.

Kade continued.

“Fuel. Ammunition. Replacement parts. Aircraft. Whatever their equivalents are.”

He looked toward the photograph.

“We don’t know what they need or how they produce it. Fine. But if they’re moving it under escort, then something matters enough to protect.”

Aaron nodded slowly.

“And if they can move supplies…”

Kade finished:

“They can sustain operations.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then the Commander looked back at the Pacific map.

The patrol routes.

The repeated sightings.

The escorts.

The probable supply movements.

The newly observed combat classes.

A pattern began forming.

Not one he liked.

He stood.

Moved toward the map.

And studied the western ocean.

Aaron remained seated.

For a moment, Kade didn’t speak.

Then he raised one hand.

Pointed toward a marked island chain.

“Here’s a patrol line.”

Aaron nodded.

The Commander moved his finger south.

“Here’s a convoy route.”

Another movement.

“Here are submarine contacts on the approaches.”

Then farther west.

“And here are probable transport movements between controlled regions.”

He lowered his hand.

For several seconds, he stared at the markings.

Then whispered:

“They’re organizing.”

Aaron rose.

Approached the map.

“Yes.”

Kade looked toward him.

“Not just getting stronger.”

“No.”

“Organizing.”

The lieutenant nodded.

The Commander stared at the black markings.

For the first time since Aaron entered, the full meaning of the reports began settling into place.

The Blackwake had always been capable of destroying ships.

Now it appeared to be protecting routes, deploying specialized escorts, conducting persistent reconnaissance, and moving supplies between occupied regions.

Its capital ships were becoming more varied.

Its smaller vessels were becoming more specialized.

Its aircraft were evolving.

Its submarines were learning to support wider operations.

Its transports were moving under organized protection.

And, somewhere in that structure, the Princesses were beginning to appear.

Kade swallowed.

He thought of the night battle.

The Blackwake withdrawing at dusk.

Regrouping.

Returning after dark.

Coordinating separate attacks against Horizon’s already exhausted formations.

Not because the enemy had suddenly acquired infinite strength.

Because something had directed the forces it possessed.

He looked toward Aaron.

“Who is coordinating all of this?”

The lieutenant’s expression darkened.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he reached for the remaining sealed folder.

The one he hadn’t opened.

Kade saw the marking.

RESTRICTED — UNCONFIRMED COMMAND ENTITIES

His stomach tightened.

Aaron placed the folder on the desk.

Then spoke quietly.

“That’s why I came.”

 V. Four New Shadows

Kade did not open the folder immediately.

For several seconds, he looked at the warning stamped across its cover.

UNCONFIRMED COMMAND ENTITIES.

The phrase was deliberate.

Not Princesses.

Not corrupted Keelborn.

Not yet.

Aaron had learned enough from their previous conversations to know that the Commander disliked conclusions being smuggled into the wording of a report before the evidence justified them.

Kade appreciated the restraint.

He also hated what it implied.

He looked toward the intelligence officer.

“How many?”

Aaron considered the question.

“Four distinct appearances supported by sufficient evidence for provisional reporting.”

Kade’s expression tightened.

“Four?”

“Yes.”

“Beyond Maki and Reina?”

“Yes.”

The Commander slowly lowered himself into his chair.

For several seconds, he did not speak.

Then he looked toward the unopened folder.

“Aaron.”

“Yes?”

“Before you show me anything, I need you to answer a question.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“Go ahead.”

“Are you calling these things Princesses because they’re large, humanoid Blackwake flagships?”

Aaron shook his head.

“No.”

“Because they command fleets?”

“That is part of it.”

Kade waited.

The intelligence officer continued.

“Each appears to be an exceptional humanoid command entity integrated with capital-scale or cruiser-scale naval machinery. Each has been observed coordinating ordinary Blackwake formations.”

A pause.

“And each has something else in common with Maki.”

Kade went still.

He already knew what Aaron was going to say.

He hoped, absurdly, that he was wrong.

The lieutenant looked toward the sealed folder.

Then answered quietly.

“Pendants.”

For a moment, the office seemed to become very small.

Kade stared.

The intelligence officer continued.

“Not simply jewelry. At least one clear image from each case shows an object consistent with a Keelborn Pendant, attached to or embedded within the central humanoid’s equipment.”

The Commander felt his stomach tighten.

“Each one?”

“Yes.”

“Four separate sightings?”

“Four visually distinct entities.”

Kade lowered his eyes.

For several seconds, he remained perfectly still.

Then he whispered:

“Christ.”

Aaron said nothing.

The Commander looked toward the casualty folder.

Fifteen.

Eleven.

Four.

The numbers sat within arm’s reach.

He thought of Kiri.

Of Suzu.

Of Yūgumo’s Pendant washed onto the beach.

Then the four missing.

Somewhere beyond Horizon’s recovery area.

He closed his eyes.

Not necessarily.

The distinction mattered.

Four missing Pendants did not mean four new Princesses.

These reported entities had been seen in widely separated regions, some before the battle at Horizon had even begun.

Their existence did not establish what had happened to the four girls still missing from his own fleet.

But it established something else.

Something nearly as terrible.

Maki and Reina were not unique.

Kade opened his eyes.

Then looked toward Aaron.

“Show me.”

The first photograph was taken through a damaged patrol aircraft’s observation camera.

It depicted a broad expanse of sea beneath broken clouds.

Near the center stood a pale figure surrounded by immense black-and-white naval machinery.

The image was grainy.

Some details had been obscured by sunlight reflecting from the water.

But the central silhouette was clear enough.

A tall woman.

Long pale hair.

An expression that appeared almost aristocratic.

Heavy armored structures rising on either side of her shoulders.

Three enormous triple-gun assemblies arranged along the corrupted machinery.

Additional smaller guns distributed around the outer armor.

Several sensor structures extending above the central body.

The design was not simply large.

It was disciplined.

The machinery’s principal gun housings were positioned in a way that suggested careful control of their firing arcs.

The surrounding armor was dense, but not so bulky that it would prevent movement.

Kade leaned forward.

For several seconds, he studied the image.

Then whispered:

“Fast battleship.”

Aaron nodded.

“That is our working classification.”

Kade examined the turret arrangement.

Three triples.

Two forward.

One aft.

The proportions troubled him.

He knew that layout.

Not because it was unique.

Several battleship classes had used it.

But the length of the weapon structures and the arrangement of the corrupted supporting machinery suggested something familiar.

He looked toward Aaron.

“Iowa?”

The lieutenant’s expression sharpened.

“That’s one possibility.”

Kade pointed.

“Those forward turrets. The length of the barrels. The spacing.”

Aaron nodded.

“The surviving original features are consistent with an Iowa-class lineage, but the image doesn’t establish the gun caliber or barrel length precisely enough for confirmation.”

The Commander frowned.

“Any hull numbers?”

“No.”

“Original name?”

“No.”

“Pendant registry?”

“Not readable.”

Kade slowly nodded.

Then looked toward the woman again.

She did not resemble the ordinary Blackwake battleships Aaron had shown him.

Her central body was different.

More distinct.

More individualized.

The machinery seemed to have grown around a particular person rather than the person being a natural extension of a standard enemy design.

He swallowed.

“Where?”

Aaron placed the accompanying map on the desk.

“A remote shipping approach west of the Marshall Islands. Report forwarded by a surviving reconnaissance crew through two separate island relays.”

Kade studied the account.

The reconnaissance aircraft had been tracking a Blackwake surface formation.

Its crew expected to find several familiar enemy combatants.

Instead, they observed a group containing newly identified Ironvault-type heavy battleships, Razorwake-type fast capital units, multiple cruisers, and an organized destroyer screen.

At the center stood the pale woman.

The aircraft made a brief pass.

The formation did not scatter.

It changed course.

Several escorts adjusted their positions.

The central figure raised one arm.

And the surrounding Blackwake ships brought their guns around toward the aircraft’s projected escape route.

The pilot escaped by descending into cloud and flying away on an indirect course.

The reconnaissance camera captured several more frames before the aircraft withdrew.

One of them showed the Pendant.

Aaron placed it beside the first photograph.

Kade leaned closer.

There.

At the base of the woman’s throat.

A narrow silver object suspended beneath the black collar of her corrupted armor.

It appeared partially trapped beneath two dark mechanical structures, as though the armor had closed around the chain.

The reflection was small.

Almost lost among the pale fabric and black plating.

But recognizable.

Kade stared.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

Then he looked toward Aaron.

“Same general form as ours.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“Within the limits of the image.”

Kade lowered his eyes.

A Keelborn Pendant.

Hanging against the chest of a corrupted battleship girl.

He swallowed.

Then looked toward the main photograph.

The woman stood perfectly upright amid the immense machinery.

Her expression was cold.

Almost serene.

She looked like someone issuing orders to a fleet that had been built for her.

The Commander felt something unpleasant.

He thought of Scarlett.

Of the second South Dakota-class girl.

Of Riko.

Of Adelheid.

Of the other battleships that had defended Horizon.

Girls with different appearances.

Different equipment.

Different personalities.

Any one of them, if captured beneath the water, might have become something equally monstrous.

He forced the thought aside.

Not because it was impossible.

Because he could not afford to lose himself in possibilities while Aaron was still speaking.

“Designation?”

The lieutenant glanced down.

“Fast Battleship Princess. Variant One.”

Kade looked up.

“Variant?”

“We have evidence suggesting that the form is not necessarily unique to one original battleship class.”

The Commander frowned.

“Explain.”

Aaron removed a comparison sheet.

It did not contain another confirmed Princess.

Only equipment diagrams and several uncertain reports of unidentified heavy humanoid Blackwake units.

The lieutenant pointed toward the original fast-battleship image.

“This individual’s machinery appears elongated. The apparent proportions are consistent with a high-speed, relatively long-hulled battleship.”

Kade nodded.

Aaron continued.

“If the corruption process preserves aspects of the original ship class, then a South Dakota-derived individual might produce a considerably more compact form. An Iowa-derived individual would likely retain different structural proportions.”

The Commander stared at the diagrams.

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then nodded.

“So we’re naming what she can do.”

“Yes.”

“Not claiming every Fast Battleship Princess looks exactly like this.”

“Correct.”

Kade looked toward the photograph again.

The silver Pendant gleamed beneath her collar.

He swallowed.

“Good.”

A pause.

“Keep it that way.”

The second report came from an island passage farther southwest.

The original observers had been a small group of former players operating a coastal lookout station.

They had survived the first weeks of Hour Zero by keeping their radio transmissions brief and their vessels hidden.

Their station had never possessed enough firepower to engage a major Blackwake formation.

They had learned to watch.

Record.

And retreat when necessary.

One night, they observed a surface group moving through a narrow offshore passage.

At first, the reports described ordinary Blackwake cruisers.

Then came the new ships.

Ravenblade heavy cruisers.

Viperwake torpedo cruisers.

Several advanced destroyers.

A smaller sensor-equipped cruiser near the rear.

And something at the center.

Aaron placed the photograph on the desk.

Kade stared.

A woman with dark hair stood amid a massive arrangement of twisted black machinery.

Long, hornlike projections rose behind her.

Armored appendages curved around her hips and shoulders.

Some resembled gun housings.

Others looked like enormous limbs or tentacles.

A pale section of clothing remained visible beneath the black armor.

Her expression was unnervingly composed.

The equipment carried heavy-cruiser artillery.

Eight-inch-class guns.

Extensive torpedo machinery.

And what looked like a reconnaissance platform along the rear structures.

Kade leaned forward.

“Another cruiser.”

Aaron nodded.

“An exceptional one.”

The Commander studied the weapons.

Then the way the surrounding ships had been positioned in the accompanying tactical reconstruction.

Three cruiser groups.

Different bearings.

A narrow central passage.

Destroyers pushed forward.

Torpedo cruisers waiting outside the most obvious approach route.

Kade frowned.

“That’s a trap.”

Aaron looked up.

“The formation?”

“Yeah.”

The Commander pointed.

“Any ship coming through here sees the center group. Turns away from the heavy guns. Then runs toward the torpedo cruisers.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“That matches the survivors’ interpretation.”

Kade looked toward him.

“Did they attack somebody?”

“Yes.”

Aaron turned a page.

“A small defending group attempted to intercept. One cruiser was damaged. Two destroyers forced to withdraw. The Blackwake didn’t pursue them beyond the passage.”

The Commander frowned.

“Didn’t pursue?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Aaron considered that.

“Possibly because the defending vessels were not the objective.”

Kade went still.

He looked toward the map.

Then toward the photograph.

The Blackwake group had held the passage.

Forced the defenders out.

Maintained control of the route.

And continued its original movement.

He swallowed.

“They were protecting a corridor.”

“That is our assessment.”

The Commander slowly lowered the paper.

For several seconds, he studied the dark-haired woman.

Her expression looked disturbingly familiar.

Not because he knew her.

He didn’t.

But because he had seen the same kind of composed, almost deliberate attention in Maki’s corrupted face.

The lieutenant placed a second photograph beside the first.

This one had been taken under illumination from a coastal searchlight.

The woman’s central body was partly obscured by smoke.

But one detail stood out.

A small silver object hung near her left hip.

Suspended from a chain that disappeared into the black machinery around her waist.

Kade leaned forward.

The Pendant.

It was not worn around her neck.

Not attached where a human sailor might expect a medal.

Instead, the corrupted structures had caught the chain and drawn it into the armor, leaving the silver object hanging outside like a piece of captured equipment.

The Commander stared.

For a moment, he imagined the original girl reaching toward it.

Perhaps trying to keep it close.

Perhaps never having had a choice.

He stopped himself.

There was no evidence for that.

Only the object.

The chain.

The black machinery.

He looked toward Aaron.

“Identity?”

“Unknown.”

“Original class?”

“Probable heavy cruiser. Takao-class lineage is one possibility, although several other cruiser classes share enough features that we cannot be certain.”

Kade nodded slowly.

He thought of Takao One.

The girl who had found Maki’s Pendant.

The girl who had watched her sister sink.

The girl who had returned with Takao Two’s Pendant clutched against her chest.

He looked toward the photograph again.

A dark-haired woman surrounded by monstrous cruiser rigging.

For one moment, he found himself wondering whether someone, somewhere, had once called her by a simple name.

Not Heavy Cruiser Princess.

Not enemy flagship.

Just her name.

The thought hurt.

He swallowed.

“Designation?”

“Heavy Cruiser Princess. Passage-raider variant.”

Kade nodded.

Then stared at the photograph.

The enemy’s eyes seemed to look directly through him.

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then whispered:

“That’s two.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

The Commander looked toward the remaining folders.

His stomach tightened.

“Go on.”

The third report concerned an independent Blackwake surface group operating along a distant route south of the main Mid-Pacific controlled regions.

Its first sighting had been dismissed as a misidentified battleship.

The second described an enormous armored creature accompanying a fast capital ship.

The third included photographs.

Aaron placed them on the desk.

Kade looked down.

And went still.

The central girl was pale.

Her hair was long, almost white.

Her expression seemed unnaturally calm.

But the machinery surrounding her was unlike that of the other two Princesses.

It extended backward in a vast segmented structure resembling a monstrous deep-sea animal.

Dark plates overlapped along its length.

Heavy naval guns projected from armored sections.

A pair of immense mechanical jaws curved around the central figure.

And above the rear machinery lay structures that looked almost like aircraft-handling platforms.

Kade frowned.

“Battlecruiser?”

Aaron nodded.

“Probable.”

The Commander studied the gun arrangement.

Long barrels.

Twin housings.

A fast capital-ship silhouette beneath the corruption.

He looked toward the lieutenant.

“Original class?”

“Uncertain. Several features are consistent with a British battlecruiser lineage, possibly Hood, although the corruption obscures too much for a confident identification.”

Kade considered that.

Then looked toward the supporting photographs.

The Princess had been observed leading a fast surface group.

Razorwake battleships.

Ravenblade cruisers.

Several Knifecrest and Violetmaw destroyers.

An advanced light cruiser operating on the outer flank.

The formation appeared to be moving rapidly across a major open-ocean route.

Not attacking the nearest shore.

Not converging on every detected vessel.

Moving with purpose.

The observers attempted to shadow it.

The Blackwake formation accelerated.

Its leading destroyers adjusted position.

Then the Princess turned toward the pursuing aircraft.

A heavy gun mount elevated.

The observers broke contact before entering its likely firing envelope.

Kade looked toward the report.

“Did she engage?”

“Not in the confirmed observation.”

“Then how do we know she directed the formation?”

Aaron pointed toward the sequence.

“The accompanying vessels altered course in relation to her movement. Their screen remained centered on her position. The command inference is strong, but not conclusive.”

Kade nodded.

“Fair.”

The lieutenant turned to the next image.

The central figure was partly illuminated by the low sun.

A dark strip of armor crossed her upper chest.

Something silver hung from it.

Not freely.

The chain had been drawn beneath the outer plates.

The Pendant itself remained visible against the pale surface of her clothing.

Kade felt cold.

Another one.

He stared.

The object was small.

Almost absurdly small compared with the machinery surrounding it.

The guns.

The armored jaws.

The enormous segmented structure that stretched behind the girl.

An entire warship’s identity, condensed into something barely larger than a hand.

He swallowed.

For a moment, he thought of Aster.

Her warmth against his side.

Her hand over his.

The way she’d smiled when he finally stopped looking angry at the sea.

Then he imagined someone taking that same girl beneath the water.

Taking her Pendant.

Building a monster around her.

The thought hit so suddenly that his breath caught.

He closed his eyes.

Only for a second.

Then opened them.

Aaron noticed.

“Commander?”

Kade shook his head.

“I’m here.”

The lieutenant hesitated.

For a moment, he seemed uncertain whether to continue.

Then Kade looked toward him.

“Designation.”

Aaron swallowed.

“Battlecruiser Princess. Fast-raider variant.”

The Commander nodded.

He looked toward the photograph again.

The woman seemed to stand in perfect silence amid her enormous machinery.

Somewhere, once, she had been a Keelborn.

That was the working implication of the Pendant.

But who?

Where had she served?

Who had watched her sink?

Had anyone recovered enough information to know she was missing?

And was someone still waiting for her?

Kade lowered the photograph.

“That’s three.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

The Commander looked toward the final envelope.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he asked:

“The fourth?”

Aaron did not answer immediately.

Instead, he removed a much larger photograph.

And placed it on the desk.

At first, Kade could not understand the scale.

The image showed an enormous structure rising above the sea.

Blue-black armor.

Pale skeletal sections.

Curved machinery resembling the ribs of an impossible sea creature.

A vast elongated head.

Heavy gun housings embedded along the creature’s body.

And, near the center, a small pale woman standing amid the surrounding structure.

She looked almost delicate.

Her hair was very light.

Her clothing appeared white beneath the dark armor.

The contrast made the figure seem strangely isolated, as though she were the only human-shaped thing inside a moving fortress.

Kade stared.

For several seconds, he did not move.

Then he slowly leaned forward.

“…How big?”

Aaron consulted the report.

“Uncertain. The observing aircraft had no reliable reference object at the same range.”

Kade looked toward him.

“Estimate?”

The lieutenant hesitated.

“Larger than any ordinary Blackwake capital unit in the corresponding photographs.”

The Commander exhaled.

“That narrows it down to somewhere between enormous and absurd.”

Aaron didn’t smile.

Kade looked toward the image again.

The machinery resembled a living leviathan.

A pale skeletal whale formed from warship armor and deep-sea bone.

Several enormous naval gun structures ran along its flanks.

Some of the supporting armor looked damaged.

Other sections appeared too smooth, as though the black material had grown over older metal.

The woman at the center remained motionless.

Her face was indistinct.

But her posture was unmistakably upright.

A person-shaped figure amid an immense corrupted warship.

Kade swallowed.

“Where was this taken?”

Aaron pointed toward a broad region deep inside the central Pacific.

“Near the boundary of a Blackwake-controlled maritime sector. Exact coordinates withheld in the forwarding report because the observing station feared interception.”

The Commander frowned.

“Source?”

“A reconnaissance aircraft operating from a remote surviving settlement. The image was copied onto a physical storage device and delivered to a relay point by boat.”

“How old?”

“Nine days.”

Kade nodded slowly.

“What was she doing?”

Aaron’s expression darkened.

“Apparently maintaining station near an important approach route.”

The Commander looked up.

“Maintaining station?”

“Yes.”

“Not attacking?”

“Not during the observation.”

Kade stared at the photograph.

For several seconds, he considered that.

A monstrous Princess.

Enormous naval machinery.

Heavy guns.

A formation of ordinary Blackwake battleships and cruisers nearby.

And it had been holding position.

Guarding something.

The lieutenant placed the accompanying tactical sketch beside the photograph.

Kade examined it.

Ironvault battleships.

Chainmaw siege cruisers.

Wardclaw escorts.

Advanced destroyer groups.

Several possible submarine contacts on the outer approaches.

And, behind the main defensive line, something else.

A large rounded vessel.

Kade pointed.

“Burdenback?”

Aaron nodded.

“Probable.”

The Commander sat back.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then looked toward the map.

The Princess wasn’t simply passing through.

She was stationed near a protected area.

With escorts.

Submarine pickets.

And transport traffic.

His jaw tightened.

“A defensive command.”

Aaron nodded.

“That is one possibility.”

The Commander looked toward the pale figure.

“What are we calling her?”

The lieutenant answered quietly.

“Deepwater Leviathan Princess.”

Kade stared.

For several seconds, the name seemed to hang in the office.

Then he looked toward the final image.

It had been captured from a different angle.

The Princess’s enormous machinery filled most of the frame.

The pale central figure stood beneath an overhanging armored structure.

And there, half-hidden within a translucent section of the black material near her chest, something silver was visible.

Kade leaned closer.

The object appeared to be suspended inside the machinery itself.

Not hanging freely.

Not attached to an external chain.

Embedded.

The surrounding material had formed around it.

A small silver shape within an enormous dark shell.

The Lieutenant pointed.

“That is the best available image of the suspected Pendant.”

Kade stared.

For a moment, he remembered Maki’s photograph.

The little object held against her chest.

The black machinery grown around it.

The similarity was difficult to dismiss.

He swallowed.

“Identification?”

Aaron shook his head.

“None.”

“Original ship class?”

“Unknown. The gun arrangement suggests a heavily armed battleship lineage, possibly an older capital ship rather than a fast battleship. We cannot narrow it further.”

Kade nodded.

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then looked toward the map.

The deep Pacific.

The controlled territories.

The protected approaches.

The monstrous Princess holding station.

He felt something very unpleasant settle inside his chest.

There was a difference between finding a dangerous enemy.

And finding a dangerous enemy that appeared to be defending an organized system of ports, patrols, supply routes, and fleet formations.

The latter suggested permanence.

Planning.

A war that could continue.

He lowered the photograph.

Four new Princesses.

Four different appearances.

Four different naval roles.

Four Pendants visible within corrupted machinery.

And not a single original personal name confirmed.

Kade stared at the desk.

For several seconds, the only sound was the ceiling fan.

Then he spoke.

Very quietly.

“Six.”

Aaron looked toward him.

“Commander?”

Kade raised his eyes.

“Maki. Reina. These four.”

The lieutenant nodded slowly.

“Six observed entities fitting our provisional Princess classification.”

Kade looked toward the photographs.

The tall Fast Battleship Princess.

The dark-haired Heavy Cruiser Princess.

The pale Battlecruiser Princess.

The enormous Deepwater Leviathan Princess.

Then toward Maki and Reina’s earlier images.

Six faces.

Six corrupted forms.

Six sets of ship-derived machinery.

And, somewhere within each, the evidence of a Keelborn identity.

He swallowed.

For a moment, his eyes moved toward the casualty folder.

Four unrecovered Pendants.

Not necessarily related.

No proof.

But the new reports made it impossible to dismiss the larger danger.

He looked toward Aaron.

“Do the other settlements know?”

The lieutenant hesitated.

“Some know they’ve encountered unusual Blackwake command entities.”

Kade’s expression tightened.

“And the Pendants?”

“Not all of them understand what they’re seeing.”

The Commander closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then slowly opened them.

“We need to tell them.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

Kade looked toward the photographs.

His voice became firm.

“Not a panic bulletin. Not some dramatic announcement that the Pacific is full of resurrected monsters.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“We don’t know enough to say that.”

“Exactly.”

Kade pointed toward the images.

“We tell them what we observed. We tell them what the Pendants might mean. And we make it clear that the mechanism isn’t understood.”

Aaron’s expression softened slightly.

“Understood.”

The Commander lowered his hand.

For a moment, he stared at Maki’s photograph.

Then whispered:

“They’re still carrying their names.”

Aaron looked toward him.

Kade did not elaborate immediately.

He studied the little silver Pendant caught within the corrupted rigging.

Then continued.

“Even if nobody knows what those names are anymore.”

For several seconds, the office remained quiet.

The intelligence officer lowered his eyes.

And the six photographs remained spread across the desk.

VI. The Problem With Calling It Evolution

For several minutes, Kade said nothing.

He rearranged the photographs.

Not according to their reported dates.

Not according to their estimated firepower.

According to what they represented.

On one side of the desk, he placed the photographs of the native Blackwake combatants.

The humanoid Widowspine destroyer.

The Ravenblade cruiser.

The monstrous Tempestwing aviation battleship.

The Ironvault heavy battleship.

The Wardclaw escort cruiser.

The Burdenback transport.

On the other side went the Princesses.

Maki.

Reina.

The Fast Battleship Princess.

The Heavy Cruiser Princess.

The Battlecruiser Princess.

The Deepwater Leviathan Princess.

Aaron watched him.

For a moment, the lieutenant seemed uncertain what the Commander intended.

Then Kade placed a pencil between the two groups.

A simple line.

Nothing more.

He looked up.

“That’s the distinction.”

Aaron nodded.

“Native combatants and suspected corrupted Keelborn.”

“Right.”

The Commander pointed toward the Widowspine.

“She can look like a woman without ever having been one of our girls.”

The lieutenant nodded.

Then Kade pointed toward Maki.

“And she can look like a monster while still being the girl Halcyon lost.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Kade lowered his hand.

His expression tightened.

“That’s going to be hard for people.”

Aaron considered the statement.

Then nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“Particularly after Horizon.”

The lieutenant looked toward the casualty folder.

Fifteen.

Eleven.

Four.

His expression became grave.

Kade continued.

“People are going to look at every humanoid Blackwake unit and wonder whose sister she used to be.”

He glanced toward the Widowspine photograph.

“Then somebody gets too close trying to identify a Pendant that was never there.”

A pause.

“Or they see something like Maki and shoot without thinking because they assume she’s just another native unit.”

Aaron nodded.

“We need a recognition protocol.”

“An honest one.”

The intelligence officer raised an eyebrow.

The Commander continued.

“Not one that pretends a reconnaissance photograph can tell us everything about an enemy’s origin.”

Aaron considered that.

Then nodded.

“Agreed.”

Kade looked toward the Princess photographs again.

For a moment, he studied the Fast Battleship Princess.

The probable Iowa-derived machinery.

The long black armor.

The pale hair.

The silver Pendant near her throat.

Then he asked:

“Can you establish when these forms first appeared?”

Aaron opened another report.

“Not precisely.”

“Before Horizon?”

“Yes. Several confirmed observations predate our battle.”

“Before Hour Zero?”

“No credible evidence.”

Kade leaned back.

“Were they ever in the original game?”

The lieutenant shook his head.

“Not these entities. Not these configurations.”

The Commander looked toward the wall.

A framed illustration hung beside the bookcase.

It was an old promotional image from FRONTLINE HEARTS.

A bright harbor.

A group of Keelborn smiling beside their equipment.

A blue ocean beneath a cloudless sky.

Somebody had given it to him shortly after the island’s administration had been established.

He’d kept it.

Not because the old game had been perfect.

It hadn’t.

But because the picture reminded him of what people had once believed they were playing.

The girls were cheerful.

The harbor was clean.

The sea looked inviting.

A world of sorties, repairs, upgrades, and familiar enemy encounters.

Then Hour Zero happened.

The equipment became real.

The girls became real.

The wounds became real.

And the ocean stopped caring how many experience points a player had accumulated.

Kade looked back toward Aaron.

“Former players used to have charts for everything.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“Enemy armor estimates. Air superiority calculations. Torpedo performance.”

“Boss patterns.”

“Event strategies.”

Kade gave a humorless smile.

“Someone somewhere probably had an entire spreadsheet explaining exactly how many destroyers you needed to survive a particular engagement.”

Aaron almost smiled.

“Several thousand people did.”

“Right.”

Kade looked toward the new photographs.

The silver Pendants.

The unfamiliar ships.

The emerging patrol routes.

Then his expression hardened.

“Those spreadsheets are going to get people killed if they treat them like gospel.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

The Commander leaned forward.

“The Blackwake’s original strengths are still relevant. We can use what we know about naval gunnery, torpedoes, carrier operations, and how their older formations behaved.”

He tapped the photograph of the Tempestwing.

“But none of that tells us how this thing fights.”

Then the Widowspine.

“Or this.”

Then the Deepwater Leviathan Princess.

“Certainly not her.”

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then looked toward Aaron.

“We need to stop thinking about them as an enemy roster.”

The lieutenant frowned thoughtfully.

“And start thinking about them as an opposing navy?”

Kade nodded.

“Exactly.”

He stood.

Moved toward the Pacific map.

Then gestured toward the black markings.

“A navy with different ship types, specialists, patrol areas, supply routes, and command units.”

Aaron joined him.

The Commander continued.

“Some of their formations may still operate like the older Blackwake. Some might attack on sight. Others may have standing orders to protect a particular region.”

He pointed toward the transport sightings.

“Some of them might be defending logistics.”

Then toward the carrier reports.

“Some may be establishing air control.”

Then toward the submarine contacts.

“Some might be watching us without trying to kill us immediately.”

Aaron nodded slowly.

Kade looked toward the distant Mid-Pacific.

“And we don’t know who’s deciding any of it.”

The lieutenant considered that.

Then answered carefully.

“Not entirely.”

The Commander raised an eyebrow.

Aaron gestured toward the Princess photographs.
