Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

I. The Weight That Never Felt Heavy

The Pacific Ocean was beautiful.

Sakura Nagase had known that before Hour Zero.

She had seen photographs of it.

Videos.

Documentaries.

The bright blue expanses that stretched beyond tropical islands, the immense cloud formations rolling across the horizon, and the glittering reflections of sunlight upon water so clear that it seemed almost impossible for anything terrible to exist beneath it.

She had seen similar scenes in FRONTLINE HEARTS.

The original game had always possessed an extraordinary talent for making the ocean look inviting.

Morning sorties began beneath painted skies.

Sunrise reflected from calm harbors.

White wakes followed Keelborn formations across impossibly blue water.

Even battlefields were sometimes beautiful.

Especially the battlefields.

Back then, Sakura had thought the artists were exaggerating.

Now, several hours beyond Horizon Atoll’s eastern breakwater, she was beginning to suspect they hadn’t exaggerated enough.

“Oh…”

The sound escaped her before she realized she’d spoken.

She stood at the forward control position of her Senko Maru rigging, her dark brown ponytail shifting beneath the warm morning wind.

Ahead of her stretched the open Pacific.

No breakwater.

No crowded maintenance pier.

No cranes rising above the harbor.

Only an enormous blue surface that continued outward until sea and sky touched in a thin, almost invisible line.

Clouds towered far to the south.

Their upper edges glowed white beneath the sunlight, while their lower portions cast enormous patches of violet shadow over the water.

Small waves moved toward the convoy, each lifting and lowering the surface beneath her equipment.

The sensation was strangely gentle.

Her rigging adjusted automatically.

The propulsion assemblies maintained their assigned output.

The cargo connections behind her flexed with the sea.

And the three great pontoons followed in a long, steady procession.

Sakura turned her head.

For a moment, she simply watched them.

The first pontoon rose over a swell.

Its bow descended into the following trough.

The connecting mechanism adjusted.

Then the second pontoon followed.

Then the third.

Their upper structures remained securely aligned with the direction of travel, and the little windows of the rest cabins caught the sunlight.

They looked almost cheerful.

Like three tiny houses that had decided to go on a journey together.

Sakura smiled.

“Look at you.”

The machinery continued humming.

She laughed quietly.

“You’re doing great.”

Behind her, the leading pontoon rose over another swell.

The connection transmitted a gentle change in load through her control assembly.

Sakura felt it.

Not as a painful pull.

Not as though somebody had attached three cargo barges to her waist and expected her to drag them through the ocean using her own muscles.

It was much more natural than that.

Senko Maru’s primary propulsion and cargo-handling systems were integrated.

Her machinery had been designed to move laden pontoons.

The articulated connections distributed the towing forces through structural members rather than through her human-shaped body.

The pontoons possessed auxiliary maneuvering equipment that helped maintain alignment, especially during turns and changes in sea state.

And Sakura could sense their behavior through the same strange physical connection that allowed a battleship girl to feel the position of her turrets or a destroyer to recognize the response of her rudder.

Their weight was there.

Of course it was.

Thousands of structural loads, shifting water pressures, cargo masses, and mechanical stresses existed behind her.

But they were loads her equipment had been built to carry.

At their assigned cruising speed, with the pontoons correctly trimmed and the weather favorable, drawing them across the water required no extraordinary effort from Sakura herself.

She could stand comfortably.

Breathe normally.

Look toward the horizon.

And feel the great transport system working around her.

There was something almost wonderful about that.

A battleship felt powerful when her guns fired.

A destroyer felt powerful when she accelerated.

A carrier felt powerful when aircraft rose from her flight deck.

Sakura felt powerful when three enormous cargo pontoons followed her through the open ocean without a single connection straining beyond its limits.

It wasn’t spectacular.

There were no flashes.

No thunder.

No terrifying shell splashes.

Just a long white wake.

The steady hum of machinery.

And the knowledge that she could carry things other people needed.

She loved it.

Absolutely loved it.

 “Senko Maru.”

Harper’s voice entered the convoy circuit.

Sakura blinked.

Then raised her microphone.

“Senko Maru receiving.”

The South Dakota-class battleship continued.

“Confirm your aft coupling readings.”

Sakura glanced toward her equipment status.

The forward connection remained within the expected range.

The middle pontoon’s alignment was steady.

The aftermost unit showed a slight lateral movement as it crossed a small wake, then settled again.

Everything remained normal.

“All connections stable. No abnormal load. Auxiliary controls responding.”

“Received.”

A pause.

“How are you feeling?”

Sakura smiled.

“Wonderful.”

There was a short silence.

Then Harper answered:

“That’s a little more enthusiasm than I expected from an engineering report.”

Sakura laughed.

“Sorry.”

“Don’t apologize. Just keep an eye on the readings.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Harper sighed.

“We’ve discussed that.”

Sakura grinned.

“Yes, Harper.”

“Better.”

The battleship resumed her forward observation.

Sakura looked toward her.

Harper was holding a position ahead and slightly to one side of the transport’s intended course.

Her South Dakota-class rigging moved with a heavy, deliberate steadiness that contrasted sharply with the smaller escorts.

Three triple sixteen-inch turrets rested at safe training angles.

Her five-inch secondary mounts maintained their assigned sectors.

The dark armored machinery rose above the water like a compact fortress.

She did not move as nimbly as the destroyers.

Nor did she need to.

Harper’s job was to be present if something large and unpleasant appeared on the horizon.

A Blackwake heavy cruiser.

A fast battleship.

Something worse.

If a major surface threat tried to overwhelm the convoy, Harper’s guns would give the others a chance to maneuver.

But Sakura knew the battleship wasn’t invincible.

Not anymore.

Perhaps she never had been.

The night battle had taught Horizon that even enormous naval guns could not prevent every casualty.

Harper herself had endured damage and exhaustion before receiving clearance for this voyage.

Her ammunition was finite.

Her machinery required maintenance.

And prolonged combat would be dangerous so far from Horizon’s repair berths.

Sakura watched her.

For a moment, the transport girl’s smile softened.

Thank you.

She didn’t transmit the words.

Not yet.

She’d probably embarrass the battleship if she did.

Instead, Sakura returned her attention to the water.

The convoy continued east.

And the great blue ocean opened before them.

Noelle held the starboard antiaircraft station.

The Atlanta-class girl’s lighter rigging cut a narrow white wake beside the transport’s forward pontoon.

Her dual-purpose guns remained in assigned arcs.

Her optical directors swept the sky.

Every few minutes, she checked the cloud formations and the visibility along the horizon.

She was not expecting an immediate attack.

That did not mean she intended to be surprised by one.

The new Blackwake aircraft reports had disturbed her more than she’d admitted during the departure briefing.

Unknown aircraft configurations.

Possible night-fighting equipment.

Coordinated low-level attacks.

Carriers that no longer seemed content to launch everything at the nearest target and hope for the best.

Noelle knew what a lightly armed transport would look like to a Blackwake strike formation.

An opportunity.

A cargo target.

Something whose destruction could damage an entire naval base without requiring an assault on that base’s defenses.

She glanced toward Sakura.

The transport girl was smiling at the ocean.

For one moment, Noelle’s expression softened.

Then she raised her binoculars again.

There would be time to enjoy the scenery later.

Someone had to keep watching the sky.

Alice Lasky occupied the forward antisubmarine sector.

The former-player destroyer had settled into the quiet concentration that accompanied her work.

Her headphones rested over her ears.

The Allen M. Sumner-class machinery responded to the water beneath her.

She listened.

Not continuously blasting the ocean with active sonar.

That would have advertised their position unnecessarily and created a confusing acoustic environment around Sakura’s propulsion equipment.

Instead, she used controlled passive listening periods, occasional appropriate checks, and the information available from her own rigging.

The convoy was not quiet.

Transport machinery never was.

Sakura’s propulsion produced a steady underwater signature.

The pontoons created their own complicated combination of flow noise, mechanical vibration, and occasional coupling sounds.

Harper’s battleship equipment contributed lower-frequency machinery noise.

Noelle’s cruiser added another distinct pattern.

And Emi and Kagerō moved through the water on their assigned screening routes, periodically changing the acoustic picture as their bearings shifted.

Alice listened to all of it.

She was learning the convoy.

Its ordinary sounds.

The little irregularities.

The differences between an innocent mechanical vibration and something that deserved attention.

She had done the same thing at Horizon.

Before the Type VIII submarine was discovered.

Before the strange scraping contacts warned of the approaching Blackwake force.

Back when the sounds had seemed like meaningless disturbances beneath the water.

She had learned an unpleasant lesson since then.

There was no such thing as harmless uncertainty merely because a contact was difficult to explain.

That didn’t mean every strange sound was an enemy.

But it meant each one deserved an honest assessment.

Alice adjusted her headphones.

A faint metallic pulse sounded beneath the transport’s steady propulsion signature.

She frowned.

Listened again.

Then raised the internal circuit.

“Sakura, Alice.”

The transport girl answered immediately.

“Go ahead.”

“Your second pontoon is producing a repeating coupling sound. Not dangerous from what I can hear, but I’d like you to compare it with the mechanical readout.”

Sakura glanced toward the status display.

The middle connection showed normal load.

Its movement was slightly greater than that of the first pontoon, which was expected because it crossed some of the disturbed water produced farther forward.

She checked the auxiliary alignment system.

No abnormal readings.

“Second pontoon within limits. No warnings.”

Alice listened.

Then nodded.

“Understood. Probably normal articulation. I’ll mark the sound as part of our baseline.”

Sakura smiled.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

The destroyer adjusted her course slightly within her assigned patrol sector.

The sound changed with the new bearing.

Alice listened again.

Then made another note.

There.

Now she knew what the coupling sounded like when heard from ahead and to port.

It was a tiny piece of information.

Practically invisible compared with the enormous fleet battle Horizon had just survived.

But if an unfamiliar propeller signature appeared beneath that same sound later, being able to distinguish one from the other might save six lives.

Alice looked toward the horizon.

Then returned to listening.

Emi, meanwhile, was having a much more personal disagreement with the weather.

Specifically, the wind.

The Benson-class girl had discovered that the steady breeze was coming from an angle particularly well suited to blowing loose strands of her hair directly across her eyes.

This was intolerable.

She’d adjusted her hair twice.

Then three times.

Then declared war on the concept of crosswinds.

Kagerō heard the complaint over the short-range circuit.

“Are you all right?”

Emi sighed.

“No.”

The former PCA destroyer immediately became serious.

“What’s wrong?”

“My hair.”

Silence.

Kagerō blinked.

“Your… hair?”

“The wind hates me.”

For several seconds, Kagerō didn’t speak.

Then a small laugh escaped.

Emi looked toward her.

“What?”

The Kagerō-class girl shook her head.

“Nothing.”

“You’re laughing.”

“A little.”

Emi sighed dramatically.

“Betrayal.”

Kagerō smiled.

For one moment, the tension in her shoulders eased.

The two destroyers maintained their assigned positions.

Not racing.

Not crowding the transport.

Just moving together beneath the morning sun.

Emi looked toward Kagerō.

For several seconds, she was quiet.

Then spoke more gently.

“You doing okay?”

Kagerō’s smile faded slightly.

She looked toward the sea.

“Yes.”

Emi raised an eyebrow.

“Actual yes?”

The former PCA girl considered that.

Then answered honestly.

“I think so.”

Emi nodded.

“Good.”

A pause.

Then she smiled.

“If you need anything, say something.”

Kagerō glanced toward her.

For a moment, she seemed surprised.

Then nodded.

“I will.”

The two continued their patrol.

Ahead of them, Sakura’s cargo pontoons rose and fell with the swells.

And the ocean remained bright, blue, and beautiful.

II. The Ocean Beneath Her Feet

By midday, Horizon had disappeared below the western horizon.

Sakura had expected that.

She’d studied the route charts.

She knew the geometry.

She knew how far a person could see across the ocean from a particular height.

She knew that even a fortified island eventually vanished as a ship moved away.

But knowing something and watching it happen were not always the same.

For a while, the island had remained visible as a low, dark shape behind the convoy.

Then only the highest structures could be seen.

Then the radio mast.

Then nothing.

The last familiar outline slipped beneath the curvature of the earth.

Sakura turned her head.

For several seconds, she stared toward the empty western sea.

Horizon was still there.

Of course it was.

The island had not vanished.

Kade was still working.

Hana was still repairing damaged rigs.

Aster was probably making somebody’s day more complicated.

The medical staff were still caring for the wounded.

The recovered Pendants remained secure.

And the four missing ones were still somewhere beyond reach.

But she couldn’t see any of it now.

There was only water.

Sakura swallowed.

For the first time since departure, she felt the distance.

Not the number printed on the chart.

The actual distance.

The way the world became enormous when you could no longer see home.

She looked toward her pontoons.

The first followed faithfully.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Their wakes spread behind her.

And the little rest cabin’s windows reflected the sky.

She smiled faintly.

“Well…”

The wind moved across her cheeks.

“Guess we’re really going.”

She had always imagined that sailing as Senko Maru would feel like dragging a great weight behind her.

That had been the easiest way to picture it before Hour Zero.

A transport ship carrying heavy cargo.

A human-shaped girl connected to three enormous floating structures.

Surely that would feel awkward.

Unwieldy.

Exhausting.

But the real experience was entirely different.

The pontoons were part of her.

Not part of her flesh in the ordinary human sense.

They were integrated into the strange physical system that made Keelborn possible.

The connections transmitted load.

The auxiliary drives adjusted.

The cargo-handling assemblies responded to her intentions.

And the whole arrangement worked together with an elegance that sometimes astonished her.

When the sea rose beneath the first pontoon, Sakura could feel the connection compensate.

When the second entered a trough, she sensed the small adjustment in tension.

When the third passed through disturbed water, she could feel the slight change in alignment through the aft system.

None of it hurt.

At least, not in the favorable conditions they were experiencing.

She knew it could become uncomfortable in rough weather.

A heavily loaded pontoon could pull unevenly.

A sudden turn could increase lateral forces.

A failed auxiliary unit might force her to reduce speed.

And if an enemy attack damaged a coupling, the consequences could be disastrous.

But under ordinary conditions, the machinery simply worked.

She had been made for this.

The thought filled her with quiet delight.

She looked toward the sea.

Then, for no reason beyond happiness, stretched her arms slightly.

The wind caught her sleeves.

The sun warmed her face.

The cargo structures followed.

And Sakura laughed.

A bright, delighted sound.

Harper glanced toward her.

“Something funny?”

Sakura raised the radio.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m just happy.”

The battleship considered that.

Then looked toward the empty horizon.

For several seconds, she was quiet.

Finally, she answered:

“Good.”

Sakura smiled.

“That’s all?”

“What were you expecting?”

The transport girl laughed.

“I don’t know. A lecture about maintaining course?”

Harper glanced toward the navigation display.

“You are maintaining course.”

Sakura grinned.

“Then I suppose everything’s perfect.”

The battleship’s voice became dry.

“Let’s not tempt the ocean.”

Sakura laughed again.

Then returned her attention to the water.

For a little while, she let herself enjoy being alive.

The Pacific was not simply one color.

That was something the photographs had never fully captured.

Near Horizon, the water had been a brilliant tropical blue.

Farther offshore, it deepened into a richer color.

Sometimes almost violet.

Sometimes an extraordinary shade of dark blue-green that seemed to contain the entire sky.

When sunlight struck at a shallow angle, the wave crests became silver.

When a cloud passed overhead, enormous patches of shadow moved across the surface like slow, invisible ships.

The water was rarely flat.

Even in calm weather, long swells rolled through it.

Some came from distant weather systems beyond the horizon.

Others were smaller waves raised by the local wind.

They crossed one another.

Interfered.

Formed unexpected patterns of light and shadow.

Sakura watched them with fascination.

Her equipment rose gently over a swell.

The pontoons followed.

Their connections adjusted.

For several seconds, the entire transport system moved like a long creature stretching across the water.

Then everything settled again.

She smiled.

“Beautiful.”

This time, nobody answered over the radio.

She hadn’t transmitted the word.

It belonged to the moment.

The sky.

The water.

The warm wind.

The distant clouds.

And the simple happiness of being able to travel.

For several minutes, Sakura almost forgot the danger.

Almost.

Then a seabird appeared ahead of the convoy.

It flew low over the water, its wings moving only occasionally as it rode the wind.

Sakura watched.

The bird circled once.

Then continued south.

She smiled.

“Lucky thing.”

It didn’t seem worried about torpedoes.

Or ammunition inventories.

Or whether a Blackwake submarine was following it beneath the waves.

It just flew.

Sakura envied that simplicity for approximately three seconds.

Then the bird suddenly folded its wings, plunged toward the water, and emerged with a struggling fish.

She blinked.

“Oh.”

The bird flew away.

Sakura considered what she’d witnessed.

Then sighed.

“Never mind. Everyone’s got problems.”

Shortly afterward, Noelle approached the transport within the permitted formation distance.

Her Atlanta-class rigging moved steadily alongside Sakura’s leading pontoon.

The cruiser held a small covered container in one hand.

Sakura looked toward her.

“What’s that?”

Noelle raised it.

“Lunch.”

Sakura blinked.

Then her expression brightened.

“Oh!”

The cruiser smiled faintly.

“Corwin insisted we follow the meal schedule.”

Sakura laughed.

“That sounds like him.”

Noelle glanced toward the pontoons.

“You’ve got a sheltered preparation counter. I thought we might as well use it.”

The transport girl nodded enthusiastically.

“Yes!”

A pause.

“Wait. Who’s making lunch?”

Noelle considered that.

Then answered:

“Emi volunteered.”

Sakura went very still.

For several seconds, she stared.

Then slowly looked toward the Benson-class destroyer.

Emi was maintaining station.

She appeared perfectly content.

Possibly too content.

Sakura turned back.

“Noelle.”

“Yes?”

“Has anyone checked whether Emi can cook?”

The cruiser was quiet.

For a moment, her expression became thoughtful.

Then she looked toward the distant destroyer.

“…That’s an excellent question.”

Sakura covered her face.

“Oh, dear.”

Noelle sighed.

“I’ll supervise.”

The transport girl nodded immediately.

“Please.”

A pause.

“And don’t let her use any equipment that could explode.”

Noelle raised an eyebrow.

“That’s a rather broad restriction for a destroyer.”

Sakura laughed.

“Kitchen equipment!”

“Understood.”

The cruiser smiled.

Then returned toward her station.

Sakura watched her go.

For a moment, she felt something warm settle in her chest.

A floating home.

A real meal.

Friends who were beginning to relax.

They were only a few hours into a long voyage.

And already the pontoons were becoming more than cargo structures.

They were becoming somewhere the girls could live together.

A tiny piece of Horizon traveling across the ocean.

Sakura looked toward the three floating compartments.

Then smiled.

I think I like that.

III. The First Meal at Sea

The first meal aboard Senko Maru was almost a disaster.

Not a catastrophic disaster.

Nothing caught fire.

Nobody was injured.

No emergency equipment had to be deployed.

But for several alarming minutes, Sakura seriously considered whether she should prohibit Emi from entering the galley without adult supervision.

The problem began with a packet of dried noodles.

Or, more specifically, Emi’s interpretation of the instructions printed on the packet.

“It’s simple,” the Benson-class destroyer announced.

Noelle regarded her.

“That is what worries me.”

Emi looked offended.

“Have some faith.”

“I have faith.”

“Good.”

“In the stove’s emergency shutoff.”

The destroyer stared.

Then sighed.

“Cruel.”

The little preparation counter occupied one end of the forward rest cabin.

It wasn’t a full-sized galley.

There was no room for one.

This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version.

But it possessed enough equipment to prepare warm meals while the convoy was underway, provided the person operating it understood the instructions and secured everything properly.

A small electric heating unit was bolted to the counter.

Cooking equipment rested inside retaining brackets.

A sink was fitted with a covered drain.

The cupboards had proper latches.

And the floor had been treated with a nonslip surface suitable for a compartment that might move unexpectedly.

At least, that was the intention.

The actual circumstances were made considerably more entertaining by Emi’s determination to prove herself.

Noelle watched as the destroyer measured water into the cooking container.

“That’s too much.”

Emi looked up.

“No, it isn’t.”

Noelle pointed toward the instructions.

“Yes, it is.”

The Benson-class girl read the packet.

Then the measurement marking.

Then the packet again.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Finally, she said:

“…Oh.”

Noelle folded her arms.

Emi sighed.

“Fine.”

She removed the excess water.

Then reached for the seasoning packet.

Noelle’s eyes narrowed.

“Emi.”

“What?”

“That’s for two servings.”

“I know.”

“How many are you making?”

“Four.”

Noelle regarded her.

The destroyer blinked.

Then looked down.

“Oh.”

There was a silence.

Then the cruiser spoke.

“Would you like help?”

Emi considered that.

For approximately three seconds, she appeared ready to refuse.

Then another small swell passed beneath the pontoon.

The cooking container shifted against its retaining bracket.

Emi caught it.

Stared.

Then sighed.

“…Yes.”

Noelle smiled faintly.

“Good decision.”

Sakura heard most of the exchange over the small internal communication speaker beside her control position.

She had been listening with steadily increasing amusement while maintaining the transport’s assigned course.

At the moment, she couldn’t simply leave her rigging and walk into the cabin.

Senko Maru was still underway, with three pontoons moving through open water behind her.

The cruise-hold equipment could maintain course and propulsion settings for limited periods under proper supervision, but it wasn’t permission to abandon the controls whenever she felt like making tea.

For now, the transport girl remained at her operating position.

She could look toward the forward cabin.

Hear the conversation.

Monitor the equipment.

And wonder whether she’d made a terrible mistake allowing the Benson-class girl anywhere near food preparation.

Then the internal speaker crackled.

“Sakura?”

She smiled.

“Yes, Emi?”

“Important question.”

Sakura raised an eyebrow.

“Go ahead.”

“Do you like noodles?”

The transport girl blinked.

For a moment, she considered that.

Then answered:

“Yes.”

“Excellent.”

A pause.

“Do you like a lot of noodles?”

Sakura narrowed her eyes.

“Emi…”

“Hypothetically.”

The transport girl closed her eyes.

“Noelle?”

The Atlanta-class cruiser’s voice answered.

“I’ve taken control of the situation.”

Sakura exhaled.

“Thank goodness.”

Emi protested in the background.

“I was doing fine!”

Noelle replied:

“You attempted to season four servings with enough powder for eight.”

A pause.

Then Emi said:

“Flavor.”

Sakura began laughing.

So hard, in fact, that Harper called over the tactical circuit to ask whether something was wrong.

Sakura managed to compose herself.

“No emergency. Lunch preparations are proceeding.”

The battleship was quiet.

Then:

“Should I be concerned?”

Sakura considered the question.

Then glanced toward the cabin.

Emi was holding a packet of noodles with the expression of somebody who had been unjustly deprived of command authority.

Noelle was calmly measuring ingredients.

Sakura smiled.

“Not anymore.”

 They ate in shifts.

That was part of the plan.

Someone always had to maintain the tactical watch.

Someone had to monitor the convoy’s navigation and the weather.

And someone needed to remain responsible for the transport’s machinery.

The entire escort couldn’t simply gather around a table while six sets of naval equipment moved unattended across the Pacific.

Harper had made that extremely clear.

Emi had complained that the battleship was ruining the concept of a family meal.

Harper had replied that surviving long enough to enjoy another meal was an excellent family tradition.

The argument ended there.

Noelle brought Sakura’s lunch forward in a secured container.

Warm noodles.

A little preserved meat.

Vegetables from the ship’s refrigerated stores.

And a cup of tea.

Nothing elaborate.

No banquet.

No homeport feast.

Just a proper meal prepared in a tiny floating cabin while the Pacific stretched endlessly around them.

Sakura accepted the container.

“Thank you.”

Noelle smiled faintly.

“You’re welcome.”

The transport girl took a bite.

Then paused.

For several seconds, she remained perfectly still.

Noelle watched.

Her expression became cautious.

“Well?”

Sakura slowly looked up.

“This is good.”

The cruiser relaxed.

“Excellent.”

Sakura took another bite.

Then smiled.

“Really good.”

Noelle nodded.

“Most of the work was fairly straightforward.”

From inside the cabin, Emi shouted:

“I HELPED!”

Noelle closed her eyes.

Sakura laughed.

“Yes, Emi!”

A pause.

Then she added:

“Thank you!”

The destroyer’s voice came back, triumphant.

“YOU’RE WELCOME!”

Noelle looked toward the transport girl.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then both began laughing.

Later, Kagerō took her turn in the cabin.

She entered quietly.

Removed her gloves.

Carefully placed her personal equipment in the assigned locker.

Then looked toward the little table.

A warm serving waited beneath a cover.

Beside it sat a cup.

And a folded napkin.

Kagerō stopped.

For a moment, she seemed uncertain what to do.

Noelle looked up.

“Something wrong?”

The destroyer blinked.

“No.”

“Food’s there.”

Kagerō nodded.

“Yes.”

She approached.

Sat.

Then looked toward the serving.

For several seconds, she didn’t move.

Noelle noticed.

Her expression softened.

“You don’t have to rush.”

Kagerō looked up.

The cruiser continued.

“Emi and I have this watch for another twenty minutes. Take your time.”

The former PCA girl swallowed.

Then nodded.

“Thank you.”

She picked up the chopsticks.

Took a small bite.

And closed her eyes.

Warm food.

In a clean cabin.

A seat that didn’t shake with gunfire.

No one shouting at her to identify targets.

No superior officer demanding that she obey an order she knew was wrong.

Just noodles.

The little fan overhead.

The sound of water against the pontoon.

And the faint hum of Senko Maru’s machinery.

Kagerō swallowed.

Then took another bite.

Noelle went back to her notebook.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Finally, Kagerō whispered:

“It’s nice.”

The cruiser looked up.

“The food?”

The destroyer nodded.

Then hesitated.

Her eyes moved around the room.

The bunks.

The lockers.

The little window showing open water.

The emergency equipment carefully stored near the doorway.

Then she continued.

“All of it.”

Noelle considered that.

For a moment, her expression became gentler.

Then she smiled.

“Yeah.”

She looked toward the window too.

“It is.”

When Sakura finally completed her first extended control period, the convoy reduced speed to perform a scheduled machinery and cargo inspection.

Harper supervised the tactical positions.

Noelle maintained the air watch.

Alice continued passive listening from the forward screen.

Sakura secured the transport’s controls in the approved holding configuration while the engineers’ monitoring system confirmed that the pontoons were steady.

Only then did she step onto the forward cabin deck.

She stretched.

A long, luxurious stretch.

Then sighed.

“Oh, that’s better.”

Emi looked up from the doorway.

“Tired?”

Sakura smiled.

“A little.”

The Benson-class girl considered that.

Then gestured toward the cabin.

“Your floating palace awaits.”

Sakura laughed.

“Palace?”

Emi nodded solemnly.

“An elegant establishment featuring fine dining, luxury accommodation, and ocean views.”

The transport girl looked toward the narrow bunks.

The folding table.

The little stove.

Then back at Emi.

“Luxury?”

“Absolutely.”

Noelle entered behind them.

“Someone had to clean a noodle off the ventilation grille.”

Emi went still.

Sakura slowly turned.

For several seconds, she stared.

Then asked:

“How?”

The destroyer looked away.

“A mystery.”

Noelle folded her arms.

“An extremely short mystery.”

Sakura began laughing.

Emi sighed.

“I’m never cooking again.”

The transport girl smiled warmly.

“That’s probably for the best.”

“Betrayal.”

Sakura laughed harder.

Then entered the cabin.

For a little while, she simply sat at the table.

The cabin moved gently beneath her.

The sea was visible through the windows.

White sunlight lay across the floor.

Her tea remained warm in the insulated cup.

And she could hear the quiet sounds of the convoy outside.

Harper’s radio.

Alice making a short report.

Noelle acknowledging an air-watch correction.

Emi complaining about an unfair accusation involving noodles.

Kagerō laughing softly.

Sakura closed her eyes.

For a moment, she remembered the original game.

How the transport missions had worked.

How she had arranged cargo and navigated routes that existed behind menus, icons, and numbers.

How she’d chosen ships based on their ability to carry useful materials rather than their position on the combat rankings.

Back then, a successful supply operation ended with a little notification.

Cargo delivered.

Resources transferred.

Mission complete.

Sometimes she received a reward.

Sometimes the others thanked her.

Then everyone queued for another operation.

There had been no smell of hot noodles.

No cabin rolling gently with the swell.

No sound of real water against the hull.

No wounded girls waiting for medical supplies because their injuries would not disappear when a mission ended.

No Pendants locked inside a recovery room.

Sakura opened her eyes.

The sea beyond the window was so blue it almost hurt to look at.

She swallowed.

For a moment, the beauty made her sad.

Not because she wished it were ugly.

Because it seemed unfair that such a beautiful world could contain so much suffering.

She looked toward her hands.

Then toward the little table.

The warm tea.

The food.

The neatly arranged safety equipment.

All the small things people needed.

Her expression softened.

That’s why we’re going.

She took a sip.

Then looked toward the open water.

That’s why.

IV. A Name From Before the Crisis

The sun was beginning its slow descent when Sakura found a moment to check the sealed correspondence stored in her mission folder.

She had printed it before departure.

Several pages.

Technical inventory summaries.

Messages from Resolute Shoals.

Loading instructions.

An engineering contact schedule.

And one short personal note.

She unfolded that last page.

The handwriting wasn’t physical handwriting in the ordinary sense.

It had been entered into a message system and printed by the communications office.

But Sakura could practically hear the sender speaking.

Hey, Sakura.

Before you get excited, I am not promising you a miracle.

The components are real. I’ve seen them. I’ve checked the markings twice. They were stored properly, but that doesn’t tell us what will happen when someone tries to rebuild the entire installation.

Please make sure your repair team understands that.

Also, if you’re actually coming to Resolute, bring me something from Horizon that doesn’t taste like military coffee.

I’m serious.

— Mei

Sakura smiled.

“Still the same.”

For a moment, she imagined Mei Takahara sitting in the technical depot.

Probably wearing protective glasses.

Probably surrounded by disassembled machinery.

Probably arguing with somebody about a component that had been filed under the wrong inventory category.

Mei had been like that before Hour Zero.

Not a particularly dramatic player.

Not someone who wanted to lead enormous fleets into spectacular battles.

She had enjoyed the systems behind everything.

Construction.

Repair.

Facility upgrades.

Support mechanics.

The obscure details that many players ignored until something broke.

Sakura had liked her almost immediately.

Their friendship had begun with an argument about storage capacity.

Sakura had insisted that one of Mei’s proposed equipment allocations would leave insufficient room for emergency provisions.

Mei had insisted the equipment was necessary.

Sakura had sent her a cargo calculation.

Mei had responded with a revised load plan.

They’d argued for half an hour.

Then decided they were friends.

It had been an excellent beginning.

Sakura looked toward the letter.

For a moment, she remembered sitting at a desk before the Crisis, staring at a computer screen while the two of them worked out how to support a major cooperative sortie.

Back then, it had seemed important.

And it had been.

To them.

But the stakes had been different.

If a mission failed, players lost resources.

Time.

Progress.

Perhaps an especially valuable ship if they’d been careless with the game’s rules.

Now—

Sakura swallowed.

Now a failed mission could mean somebody didn’t come home.

She looked toward the engineering inventory attached behind Mei’s note.

The component descriptions were technical.

Almost boring.

A resonance-coupling manifold.

An interface cradle.

Alignment regulators.

Control modules.

Diagnostic equipment.

Nothing about the list sounded miraculous.

That was one of the things Sakura liked about it.

It wasn’t a promise written by someone who wanted to exploit grief.

It was a practical collection of parts.

Measurements.

Mounting references.

Serial numbers.

Warnings.

Conditions.

The kind of information Hana could examine and disagree with.

The kind of information Dain could test.

The kind of information Irena could demand safeguards around.

The kind of information that gave a difficult project somewhere to begin.

Sakura folded the letter.

For a moment, she held it between her fingers.

Then whispered:

“Please let them be useful.”

The cabin remained quiet.

Outside, the sea moved past.

A soft knock came at the door.

Sakura looked up.

Kagerō stood in the doorway.

“May I?”

The transport girl smiled.

“Of course.”

The destroyer stepped inside.

For a moment, she glanced toward the papers.

Then looked away.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt.”

“You aren’t.”

Kagerō nodded.

She approached the table.

Then hesitated.

Sakura noticed.

“Something wrong?”

The destroyer looked toward the window.

For several seconds, she was quiet.

Then she spoke.

“I wanted to ask you something.”

Sakura tilted her head.

“Go ahead.”

Kagerō swallowed.

“Why did you choose me?”

The transport girl blinked.

For a moment, she seemed surprised.

Then smiled faintly.

“We talked about that.”

“I know.”

The destroyer lowered her eyes.

“But…”

She stopped.

For several seconds, she seemed unable to find the words.

Finally, she continued.

“I keep thinking you could have selected somebody who’d always served Horizon.”

Sakura looked toward her.

Kagerō’s hands tightened.

“Someone who hadn’t arrived with the PCA.”

The transport girl remained quiet.

“Someone who hadn’t fought against the people here.”

Sakura slowly set down the letter.

The destroyer looked toward the floor.

“I know the Commander approved the assignment.”

A pause.

“And I know Medical cleared me.”

Her voice softened.

“But when you told me you trusted me…”

She swallowed.

“I don’t know why you were so sure.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

The cabin rolled gently with a passing swell.

A small cup shifted against its holder.

The ventilation fan hummed overhead.

Sakura considered the question.

Then she leaned back.

“Can I tell you something?”

Kagerō looked up.

“Yes.”

Sakura smiled faintly.

“I wasn’t sure.”

The destroyer blinked.

For one second, she seemed almost hurt.

Then Sakura continued.

“Not about whether you’d deliberately betray us.”

Kagerō went still.

“I didn’t think that.”

The transport girl looked toward her.

“But I didn’t know whether you’d be ready for a long voyage after everything that happened.”

Kagerō lowered her eyes.

Sakura continued.

“I didn’t know whether you’d want to leave the island. Or whether you’d be comfortable serving beside people who had fought your old fleet.”

A pause.

“Or whether you still needed time to decide what came next.”

The destroyer listened.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then nodded.

“That makes sense.”

Sakura smiled gently.

“So I asked.”

Kagerō looked up.

The transport girl continued.

“I didn’t pick you because you used to be PCA.”

A pause.

“And I didn’t pick you because I wanted to make a point about forgiveness.”

The destroyer’s expression changed.

Sakura leaned forward.

“I picked you because you know how to work in a destroyer screen. Because your equipment was cleared. Because you fought to protect people when the Blackwake came.”

Her eyes softened.

“And because you brought La Galissonnière’s Pendant home.”

Kagerō swallowed.

Sakura continued.

“That tells me something about the kind of girl you chose to be.”

For several seconds, Kagerō stared.

Then she lowered her head.

Her eyes shone.

The transport girl waited.

Finally, the destroyer whispered:

“I thought she’d make it.”

Sakura’s expression softened.

Kagerō looked toward the table.

“La Galissonnière.”

She swallowed.

“We were withdrawing. The Blackwake was firing. She kept covering us.”

Her fingers tightened against her knees.

“Even after her rigging was damaged, she kept trying to hold the line.”

Sakura listened.

The destroyer’s voice trembled.

“I wanted to go back.”

A pause.

“But there were other girls in the water.”

She closed her eyes.

“And then she was gone.”

For several seconds, the little cabin remained quiet.

Kagerō took a slow breath.

Then continued.

“I found her Pendant.”

Sakura nodded.

“I know.”

“I don’t even remember seeing it clearly at first. Just something silver.”

The destroyer lowered her eyes.

“I reached down, and it was there.”

Her voice broke.

“Her.”

Sakura swallowed.

For a moment, she couldn’t think of anything to say.

Then she reached across the table.

And took Kagerō’s hand.

The destroyer went still.

Sakura smiled gently.

“I’m glad you brought her back.”

Kagerō’s eyes filled.

She nodded.

For several seconds, she couldn’t answer.

Then whispered:

“Me too.”

The transport girl squeezed her hand.

They sat quietly together.

Outside, the Pacific continued moving beneath the warm afternoon sky.

Eventually, Kagerō looked toward the documents.

“The parts…”

Sakura followed her gaze.

“Mm?”

“Do you really think they might help?”

The transport girl hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“Yes.”

Kagerō looked up.

Sakura continued.

“I don’t know whether they’ll be enough.”

A pause.

“I don’t know whether the Respite Bath will ever work properly.”

The destroyer lowered her eyes.

“But Mei thinks the parts are worth examining. Hana thinks they’re worth bringing home.”

Sakura smiled faintly.

“And I trust them both.”

Kagerō considered that.

Then nodded.

For a moment, her expression became thoughtful.

Finally, she whispered:

“If it works someday…”

Sakura waited.

The destroyer looked toward the sea.

Her voice became very quiet.

“Do you think La Galissonnière will remember me?”

The question hurt.

Sakura felt it settle inside her chest.

She wanted to answer yes.

Wanted to tell Kagerō that everything would be all right.

That the French cruiser would return.

That she’d remember the battle.

That she’d thank the destroyer for recovering her Pendant.

That the whole terrible night would become something they could talk about together over breakfast.

But Sakura couldn’t promise any of that.

She didn’t know.

Nobody did.

So she squeezed Kagerō’s hand.

And answered:

“I hope so.”

The destroyer closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she remained still.

Then slowly nodded.

“Me too.”

Sakura smiled gently.

Kagerō looked toward the folded letter.

Then back at the transport girl.

For the first time since entering, something like determination appeared in her expression.

“Then we’ll bring those parts home.”

Sakura nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Together.”

Kagerō smiled.

A small smile.

But real.

“Together.”

 V. When the Sea Turns Gold

The first sunset came slowly.

So slowly that Sakura almost failed to notice the beginning.

For much of the afternoon, the western sky had remained a clear, brilliant blue. Then the light changed.

The clouds took on a warmer edge.

The sea beneath them turned darker.

The distant horizon began glowing with an extraordinary mixture of gold, orange, and pale pink.

Sakura stood at her control position and watched as the colors spread.

Behind her, the pontoons followed in their usual steady line.

Their dark surfaces caught the sunlight.

Their wakes became long ribbons of gold.

For several minutes, it seemed as though the entire convoy were sailing across a sea made from molten glass.

Sakura smiled.

Then looked toward Harper.

The South Dakota-class battleship was maintaining her assigned position, her great guns silhouetted against the evening sky.

Her armored structures cast long shadows across the water.

A little farther out, Noelle’s Atlanta-class rigging moved beneath a cloud whose underside had turned the color of copper.

Emi and Kagerō were dark shapes against the distant brightness.

Alice held the forward sector.

Six girls.

A little transport convoy.

And an ocean so enormous it made them look impossibly small.

Sakura’s throat tightened.

For a moment, she wished she could take a photograph.

Not a tactical recording.

Not something for the intelligence archive.

Just a picture.

Something to show Hana when they returned.

Something to bring Aster.

Something Kade could look at during one of those moments when the weight of Horizon became too much.

She imagined placing the photograph on his desk.

Look.

This is what we’re protecting.

The thought made her smile.

Then she realized that she could, in fact, take a photograph.

The transport’s navigation equipment included an optical camera used for documenting cargo operations and surface conditions.

It wasn’t intended for artistic photography.

But there was nothing preventing her from recording a scenic image when circumstances were safe.

Sakura checked her course.

Confirmed that the cruise controls were steady.

Then raised the camera.

She framed the convoy against the western sky.

Harper’s battleship.

Noelle’s smaller cruiser equipment.

The distant destroyer silhouettes.

And the golden wakes stretching behind Sakura’s three pontoons.

She took one photograph.

Then another.

The images appeared on the small display.

Sakura stared.

For several seconds, she couldn’t speak.

Then whispered:

“Oh…”

The photographs were beautiful.

Not perfect.

The lighting wasn’t balanced.

One of the destroyers had almost disappeared into the glare.

And the rear pontoon occupied considerably more of the frame than Sakura had intended.

But the scene was real.

The girls were real.

The ocean was real.

And for that moment, nobody was shooting at them.

She saved the images.

Carefully.

Then smiled.

I’ll show them when we get home.

Emi saw the sunset and immediately decided it deserved commentary.

“Okay, that’s unfair.”

Harper glanced toward her.

“What is?”

“The sky.”

A pause.

The battleship looked up.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then answered:

“It’s very nice.”

Emi sounded scandalized.

“Very nice?”

“Yes.”

“Harper, that is the understatement of the century.”

Noelle entered the circuit.

“Technically, the century is still relatively young.”

Emi groaned.

“Noelle.”

“Yes?”

“Please appreciate the sunset like a normal person.”

The Atlanta-class cruiser considered that.

Then looked toward the western sky.

The clouds were burning gold.

The sea beneath them stretched into bands of violet and copper.

For several seconds, she was quiet.

Finally, she answered:

“It’s beautiful.”

Emi sounded satisfied.

“Thank you.”

A pause.

Then Noelle added:

“Visibility will deteriorate significantly over the next hour.”

Emi sighed.

“You were doing so well.”

Sakura began laughing.

Kagerō’s voice came over the circuit.

Soft.

Almost hesitant.

“I think it’s beautiful too.”

For a moment, the others went quiet.

Then Emi answered warmly.

“See? Kagerō understands me.”

The former PCA destroyer laughed.

Harper sighed.

“I’m beginning to understand why destroyer squadrons require supervision.”

Alice joined the conversation.

“For the record, I’ve been appreciating the sunset silently.”

Emi gasped.

“Alice! You were supposed to support me!”

The Sumner-class girl smiled.

“I am supporting you. Silently.”

Sakura laughed so hard that she had to stop talking for a moment.

Then she looked toward the golden horizon.

The laughter faded into a warm smile.

She knew the voyage would not always be like this.

She knew the Blackwake could appear.

The weather could turn.

Machinery could fail.

Someone could get hurt.

But she also knew that none of those possibilities made the beauty in front of her less real.

And she was grateful for it.

The watch rotation changed shortly before sunset.

Not every girl left her combat station at once.

Harper remained on tactical command.

Noelle continued monitoring the sky while the light changed.

Alice maintained the acoustic watch.

Emi moved into a closer escort position while Kagerō prepared for her scheduled rest period.

Sakura adjusted the transport’s equipment to the approved evening operating condition.

The lighting on the pontoons was reduced to the minimum permitted by the convoy’s safety plan.

Externally, the escort remained under light discipline appropriate to the operating area. Navigation lights would be used as required for safe operation, but unnecessary illumination was prohibited.

The rest-cabin curtains were closed where they might otherwise expose the convoy.

The crew checked the securing arrangements.

Nothing loose on deck.

Cargo doors properly latched.

Emergency equipment accessible.

Radio procedures confirmed.

And everyone knew where the others were supposed to be.

Sakura liked that.

It made the convoy feel organized.

Not rigidly formal.

Just cared for.

She checked the pontoons again.

The leading connection was steady.

The second had settled after its earlier articulation noise.

The third remained in alignment.

The auxiliary equipment was working within the expected load range.

Sakura smiled.

For a moment, she imagined Corwin reading the report.

He would probably approve.

Then immediately ask whether she’d checked the cargo straps.

She looked toward the relevant indicators.

All green.

Sakura grinned.

Already did.

As the last of the sun slipped toward the sea, Harper approached the transport.

Not too closely.

Her battleship machinery remained outside the pontoons’ maneuvering envelope.

But close enough for a quiet conversation over the short-range channel.

“Sakura.”

The transport girl looked toward her.

“Yes?”

“How’s the equipment?”

Sakura glanced toward the displays.

“Good. All three pontoons are handling nicely.”

“Any fatigue?”

The transport girl considered that.

Then nodded.

“A little.”

Harper’s expression softened.

“That’s normal.”

Sakura smiled.

“I know.”

A pause.

Then the battleship continued.

“We’ll complete the evening machinery checks and let you rest in the sheltered control berth.”

The transport girl glanced toward the forward pontoon.

A small resting position had been fitted near the main operating controls.

It wasn’t as comfortable as the proper bunks farther inside the cabin.

But it allowed Sakura to remain linked to the transport’s underway systems while reducing the physical strain of standing continuously.

The navigation equipment could hold a stable course and propulsion setting under supervision.

Just as a conventional ship’s propulsion and steering systems could maintain a steady voyage without the captain personally holding the controls every second.

It did not eliminate the need for watchkeepers.

Nor could it safely perform complex evasive maneuvers without immediate intervention.

But in settled weather, with the escort maintaining a proper watch, Sakura could take short periods of rest.

Longer sleep would require an appropriate low-risk operating condition and a carefully arranged relief plan.

Harper had insisted on that before departure.

Sakura had objected that she wasn’t particularly tired.

Harper had looked at her for several seconds.

Then asked how many days she expected to remain awake.

The argument had ended quickly.

Now the battleship looked toward her.

“You’re not going to try standing there all night, are you?”

Sakura smiled innocently.

“I hadn’t decided.”

Harper closed her eyes.

For a moment, she seemed to be gathering patience.

Then answered:

“I’ve decided for you.”

Sakura laughed.

“Yes, Harper.”

The battleship nodded.

“Good.”

The transport girl looked toward the pontoons.

Then back toward the fading sunlight.

For a moment, she became quieter.

“Harper?”

The battleship glanced toward her.

“Mm?”

“Do you ever think about how beautiful it is?”

Harper looked toward the horizon.

For several seconds, she didn’t answer.

Then nodded.

“Sometimes.”

Sakura smiled.

The battleship continued.

“Usually when I remember to look.”

The transport girl’s expression softened.

Harper regarded the sea.

The light had become a dark, glowing orange.

The edges of the clouds were lined in gold.

For a moment, the South Dakota-class girl looked almost wistful.

Then she spoke.

“It’s easy to forget.”

Sakura lowered her eyes.

Harper continued.

“When you’re watching for contacts. Checking ammunition. Calculating firing solutions.”

A pause.

“You start thinking about the ocean as something that hides enemies.”

The transport girl listened.

The battleship looked toward the horizon.

“Not something beautiful.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Sakura smiled gently.

“I don’t want to forget.”

Harper turned toward her.

The transport girl continued.

“Even if it’s dangerous.”

A pause.

“Especially then.”

The battleship studied her.

For a long moment, she remained silent.

Then her expression softened.

“Good.”

Sakura blinked.

Harper smiled faintly.

“Maybe that’s something we need to remember.”

The transport girl nodded.

Together, they watched the last sunlight disappear.

And the Pacific slowly turned dark.

VI. A House on the Water

Night settled over the convoy.

Not all at once.

The first stars appeared while a little blue light still lingered along the western horizon.

Then the sky deepened.

The clouds became enormous dark shapes.

The sea lost its bright color, turning into a shifting surface of black and silver.

And the stars multiplied.

Sakura had never seen so many.

Not like this.

At Horizon, the harbor lights illuminated the clouds and scattered a pale glow into the night sky.

There were still stars, of course.

But out here, far from cities and major installations, the darkness seemed impossibly deep.

Stars spread overhead in extraordinary numbers.

Some bright.

Some faint.

Some appearing almost red or blue.

A pale band of light stretched across the sky.

The Milky Way.

Sakura looked up.

For several seconds, she forgot to speak.

Then whispered:

“Wow.”

The word seemed inadequate.

She considered trying another.

Beautiful.

Incredible.

Wonderful.

None seemed sufficient.

So she simply watched.

Her cargo pontoons followed behind her beneath the stars.

The little windows of the rest cabin were darkened.

Inside, Kagerō was sleeping.

Emi had completed her first rest period and was preparing to relieve one of the screening positions.

Noelle maintained the sky watch.

Alice continued alternating listening periods with necessary breaks.

And Harper remained awake long enough to supervise the transition into the night schedule.

It was all very ordinary.

In a way.

Six girls doing their jobs.

A little convoy traveling across the Pacific.

A careful arrangement of watches, meals, and rest.

Yet to Sakura, it felt extraordinary.

Because for the first time since Hour Zero, she was doing something that resembled the life she had chosen before the world changed.

She wasn’t pretending to be Senko Maru.

She was Senko Maru.

And she was carrying people somewhere important.

The first unexpected sound of the night came from the water.

A soft, rhythmic clicking.

Then another.

Sakura frowned.

She checked the equipment.

No warning.

The pontoon couplings remained normal.

The propulsion machinery was steady.

She listened again.

Something moved beneath the surface.

Not close enough to touch the transport.

But close enough that she could hear a faint disturbance when the water was quiet.

She raised the circuit.

“Alice?”

The Sumner-class girl answered almost immediately.

“Yes?”

“I’m hearing something off the starboard side. Any contact?”

Alice listened.

For several seconds, she didn’t answer.

Then:

“Stand by.”

Sakura looked toward the dark water.

The sound came again.

A faint clicking.

Then a low, almost musical vibration.

Alice adjusted her listening equipment.

A longer pause followed.

Harper entered the circuit.

“Alice, report when ready.”

The destroyer answered.

“Unclassified biological-sounding activity, starboard sector. No identified propeller or machinery signature. I’m continuing to evaluate.”

Sakura blinked.

“Biological?”

“Possibly.”

The transport girl looked toward the water.

For a moment, her expression became curious.

Then something pale appeared beneath the surface.

Not a ship.

Not a mechanical eye.

A moving shape.

Smooth.

Curved.

It passed through the moonlit water.

Then vanished.

Sakura gasped.

“Oh!”

Another shape appeared.

Then a third.

For several seconds, she stared.

Then laughed softly.

“Dolphins?”

Harper looked toward the water.

The first shape surfaced.

A dark, streamlined back.

A brief arc above the water.

Then a splash.

Several more followed.

Sakura’s face lit up.

“Oh, look!”

Emi’s voice entered the circuit.

“What?”

Sakura pointed, although the destroyer was too far away to see the gesture clearly.

“Dolphins!”

There was a pause.

Then Emi sounded delighted.

“Where?”

Noelle immediately answered.

“Do not leave your assigned station.”

The Benson sighed.

“I was going to look!”

“You can look from your assigned station.”

“You’re no fun.”

The Atlanta-class girl replied calmly.

“Correct.”

Sakura laughed.

The animals moved through the dark water.

For a little while, several kept pace with the convoy’s forward wake, turning and surfacing before slipping beneath the waves again.

Moonlight caught their backs.

Water glittered around them.

Their movements were effortless.

Graceful.

So quick that Sakura sometimes lost track of them between one breath and the next.

She watched with open delight.

“Hello!”

One surfaced nearby.

Then vanished with a splash.

Sakura grinned.

For several seconds, she almost forgot to check her equipment.

Then Harper spoke.

“Sakura.”

The transport girl blinked.

“Yes?”

“Pontoon readings.”

She immediately looked down.

All normal.

She smiled sheepishly.

“Still steady.”

The battleship sighed.

“Good.”

A pause.

Then Harper added:

“You can keep watching them.”

Sakura looked up.

Her smile returned.

“Thank you.”

For several minutes, she watched the dolphins play among the waves.

Then they turned away.

One by one, the dark shapes vanished into the night.

Sakura continued looking after them.

For a long moment, she was quiet.

Then whispered:

“Be safe.”

She wasn’t certain why she’d said it.

Perhaps because the ocean was dangerous for everybody.

Even the creatures that belonged to it.

Later that night, the sea began glowing.

Not everywhere.

Not dramatically.

At first, Sakura noticed only a faint bluish sparkle beneath the leading pontoon.

She blinked.

Looked closer.

Then saw another.

Tiny points of light appeared where the water broke against the machinery.

They flashed.

Faded.

Then flashed again.

The wake behind the cargo pontoons began shimmering with little pale-blue specks.

Sakura stared.

For several seconds, she couldn’t speak.

Then raised her hand.

“Oh…”

Bioluminescence.

She remembered reading about it.

Microscopic organisms producing light when disturbed.

A natural phenomenon.

A little chemistry.

A little biology.

An entire ocean quietly illuminated by living things too small to see individually.

She knew the explanation.

But it did nothing to diminish the wonder.

The pontoons moved through the water.

Their wakes shimmered.

A soft, blue-white glow spread along the disturbed surface behind them.

Not bright enough to illuminate the whole convoy.

Not a magical trail.

Just a delicate scattering of living light.

Sakura smiled.

For a moment, she imagined the ocean itself remembering the stars.

Above her, the night sky glittered.

Below her, tiny lights answered.

And between them, Senko Maru carried six girls eastward across the dark Pacific.

Sakura swallowed.

Her eyes shone.

“It really is beautiful.”

This time, she transmitted the words.

Noelle answered first.

“It is.”

Alice followed after a few seconds.

“I can see it too.”

Emi sounded delighted.

“Sakura, your wake is sparkling!”

The transport girl laughed.

“I know!”

Kagerō’s voice came next.

Soft.

Sleepy.

She had evidently awakened and looked out through the cabin window.

“Oh…”

A pause.

“That’s lovely.”

Harper remained quiet for several seconds.

Then answered simply.

“Yeah.”

The convoy continued east.

No guns fired.

No torpedoes crossed the water.

No distant searchlights tore through the darkness.

And for a little while, the Pacific seemed to offer something other than danger.

Sakura watched the sparkling wake.

Then looked toward the stars.

For one brief moment, she wished the girls whose Pendants rested at Horizon could see it too.

The thought tightened her throat.

She swallowed.

Then lowered her eyes toward the equipment that carried her.

Her cargo pontoons.

Her little floating cabins.

The empty compartment waiting for the Respite Bath components.

She smiled faintly.

Maybe someday.

The thought was small.

Fragile.

But she allowed herself to keep it.

Maybe someday, they will.

VII. The Girl at the Center of the Convoy

Sakura finally went to sleep a little after midnight.

Not because she particularly wanted to.

Because Harper ordered her to.

The transport girl had been sitting in the sheltered control berth for nearly an hour, watching the navigation displays while the voyage-hold system maintained their planned course.

The system was functioning correctly.

The weather remained favorable.

No hostile contacts had been reported.

And the escort was operating smoothly under the established night-watch arrangement.

There was no practical reason for Sakura to remain wide awake until dawn.

That did not stop her from trying.

Harper approached the forward pontoon during a scheduled formation adjustment.

“Sakura.”

The transport girl looked up.

“Yes?”

“How long have you been awake?”

Sakura considered that.

Then answered:

“Since before sunrise.”

The battleship was silent.

For several seconds, she seemed to be examining an invisible calculation.

Then:

“And how long were you planning to remain awake?”

Sakura hesitated.

“A little longer?”

Harper sighed.

“Go to sleep.”

The transport girl looked toward the horizon.

“But we’re underway.”

“Yes.”

“And I’m the transport.”

“Also yes.”

Sakura considered those facts.

Then nodded as though she’d just won an argument.

“Exactly.”

Harper remained completely unimpressed.

“Sakura.”

The transport girl sighed.

“Yes?”

“Your equipment has an approved supervised cruising mode.”

“I know.”

“The weather is within limits.”

“Yes.”

“The route is stable.”

“Yes.”

“And we have an entire escort keeping watch.”

Sakura lowered her eyes.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then whispered:

“I know.”

Harper’s voice softened.

“Then trust us.”

The transport girl looked up.

The battleship stood beyond the pontoon, her dark armored rigging silhouetted against the moonlit sea.

For a moment, she remembered Kade standing beside the pier.

The way he’d looked at her.

The careful seriousness in his voice.

Bring everyone home.

Sakura swallowed.

Then nodded.

“Okay.”

Harper’s expression softened.

“Good.”

She looked toward the transport’s status display.

“Secure the control position for rest. No one will alter your cruising settings without notifying you unless an emergency requires it.”

Sakura nodded.

“Understood.”

The battleship paused.

Then added:

“And if anything happens, we wake you.”

The transport girl smiled faintly.

“Immediately?”

Harper raised an eyebrow.

“Immediately.”

Sakura exhaled.

Then laughed quietly.

“All right.”

She settled into the sheltered resting position while the monitored systems maintained the steady transit.

The control connections remained secured.

The displays were visible to the assigned watch.

Her equipment continued operating within the prescribed limits.

And the girls outside maintained their protective formation.

Sakura closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she listened.

The propulsion machinery.

The soft movement of the pontoons.

The sound of water against the floating structures.

The occasional quiet radio acknowledgment.

Harper.

Noelle.

Alice.

Emi.

Kagerō.

All there.

All watching.

Sakura smiled faintly.

I don’t have to do everything myself.

The thought seemed strangely important.

Then her breathing slowed.

And Senko Maru’s captain finally slept.

She dreamed of the original game.

Not a battle.

Not a victory screen.

Just a harbor.

A bright, painted harbor beneath a morning sky.

Her old transport character stood beside the water.

The cargo holds were full.

A convoy waited near the breakwater.

Somebody was laughing over voice chat.

Mei was arguing about equipment compatibility.

Another player wanted more ammunition.

Someone else had forgotten to repair a destroyer before departure.

It was ordinary.

Warm.

Familiar.

Then the dream changed.

The harbor became real.

The water moved.

The sunlight felt warm against Sakura’s cheeks.

And far away, beyond the breakwater, a row of little silver Pendants lay on a table.

Eleven of them.

Sakura approached.

She knew she shouldn’t touch them without permission.

But she wanted to see them.

Wanted to read the labels.

Wanted to make sure each one was safe.

As she drew closer, she heard voices.

Not words she could understand.

Not anybody calling her name.

Just the faint sound of people talking in another room.

The way a crowded harbor sounded when girls were laughing together after a sortie.

She looked toward the doorway.

A warm yellow light shone beyond it.

For one brief moment, she thought somebody might emerge.

Then the dream faded.

Sakura woke to the quiet sound of waves.

For several seconds, she remained still.

The sheltered resting position was dimly lit.

The navigation display glowed softly beside her.

The machinery hummed.

The cargo pontoons moved in their familiar rhythm.

And nothing was wrong.

She blinked.

Then checked the status indicators.

All within limits.

She looked toward the clock.

A little more than two hours had passed.

The transport girl slowly sat upright.

For one moment, she felt almost surprised.

She’d slept.

Actually slept.

While moving across the Pacific.

And the world had not ended.

Sakura smiled.

Then reached for the internal communication control.

“Senko Maru to Escort Commander.”

Harper answered immediately.

“Receiving.”

“I’m awake.”

A pause.

Then the battleship replied:

“I noticed.”

Sakura laughed softly.

“Everything okay?”

“Everything’s fine.”

The transport girl looked toward the navigation display.

The convoy remained on its planned route.

The weather was stable.

No new contacts had been reported.

She exhaled.

“Good.”

Harper’s voice softened.

“How do you feel?”

Sakura considered that.

Then smiled.

“Better.”

The battleship nodded.

“Good. Take another rest period when the schedule permits.”

Sakura raised an eyebrow.

“You’re very bossy.”

Harper answered without hesitation.

“That’s why you selected me.”

The transport girl laughed.

“Fair.”

She leaned back.

For several seconds, she watched the soft glow of the instruments.

Then looked toward the little window.

The stars remained.

The ocean stretched into the dark.

And Senko Maru continued moving east.

Sakura smiled.

For the first time, she understood something about her own equipment that had nothing to do with cargo capacity.

A transport was not merely a ship that carried objects.

It carried people through distances they could not cross alone.

And sometimes, that meant giving them somewhere safe enough to close their eyes.

VIII. The Weather Has No Respect for Schedules

The second morning began with clouds.

Not the towering, distant formations that had made the previous afternoon so beautiful.

These were lower.

Heavier.

And approaching from the southeast in long, irregular bands.

Sakura noticed them shortly after breakfast.

The sky ahead remained bright.

But the southern horizon had darkened.

A low gray curtain seemed to hang beneath the cloud bank.

Rain.

Probably.

The wind had also shifted.

Not dramatically.

But enough to change the angle of the smaller waves moving across the convoy’s course.

Sakura checked the weather information.

Then raised the tactical circuit.

“Harper, Sakura. Weather developing southeast.”

The battleship answered.

“I see it.”

Noelle added:

“Looks like a passing squall line.”

Alice’s voice followed.

“Surface noise is increasing.”

Harper considered the reports.

Then issued the appropriate orders.

Reduce speed.

Tighten the escort arrangement without crowding the transport.

Prepare for reduced visibility.

Secure loose equipment.

Confirm the pontoon weather closures.

And maintain acoustic awareness despite the worsening surface-noise conditions.

Nobody panicked.

Nobody dramatically declared that a storm was about to destroy them.

It was weather.

The Pacific possessed a great deal of it.

But ignoring an ordinary squall because it wasn’t a Blackwake attack would have been foolish.

Sakura looked toward the approaching rain.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then smiled faintly.

“Well.”

A pause.

“Guess the ocean wants to say hello.”

The rain arrived twenty minutes later.

At first, only a few drops struck Sakura’s jacket.

Then more.

The wind freshened.

The water grew rougher.

Small waves began striking the pontoons at an angle, sending spray across the outer deck surfaces.

The sky darkened.

And suddenly the convoy entered a world made from gray water.

Sakura narrowed her eyes against the rain.

Her rigging responded to the changing sea state.

The forward pontoon rose.

Dropped.

Its coupling flexed.

The middle pontoon followed.

Then the third.

For several seconds, the loads remained within the expected range.

Then a larger wave crossed the convoy’s wake.

The leading pontoon lifted sharply.

The following unit entered the trough at a different angle.

A warning indicator flashed.

Not a failure.

A transient lateral-load warning.

Sakura immediately checked the readings.

The middle connection had taken a greater sideways force than it preferred.

She reduced propulsion slightly.

The loading eased.

Then the warning disappeared.

Sakura exhaled.

“Senko Maru to Escort Commander. Temporary lateral-load warning on middle pontoon. Corrected by speed reduction. No damage indicated.”

Harper answered.

“Received. Maintain reduced speed. Do not turn sharply.”

“Understood.”

The battleship continued.

“Noelle, hold the inner air-defense station. Emi, shorten your screening leg. Kagerō, remain clear of the transport’s aft maneuvering envelope.”

The acknowledgments came.

Steady.

Professional.

Sakura looked toward the pontoons.

Rain ran down the cabin windows.

The decks shone.

Water streamed from the drainage outlets.

The little floating houses looked much less cheerful than they had in the sunlight.

But they were doing their jobs.

The structures remained secure.

The cargo holds were dry.

The weather closures held.

And the connections continued responding.

Sakura smiled faintly.

“Good girls.”

She paused.

Then laughed at herself.

She was talking to cargo pontoons again.

Perhaps she needed more sleep.

A sudden gust struck from the southeast.

Sakura’s ponytail whipped across her shoulder.

Spray caught her face.

She blinked rapidly.

The transport’s forward equipment shifted against the wave.

She adjusted course by a small amount to reduce the worst cross-sea loading.

Not an abrupt turn.

Not a destroyer’s evasive maneuver.

A deliberate correction.

The leading pontoon followed.

Its connection aligned.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Their movements settled into a more manageable rhythm.

Sakura felt the improvement immediately.

She smiled.

“There.”

The machinery hummed.

The lateral loads eased.

For a moment, she felt an extraordinary satisfaction.

Not the excitement of hitting a target.

Not the thrill of outrunning something dangerous.

Just the quiet pleasure of making a complicated system work correctly.

She knew what she was doing.

She understood her ship.

And the sea was responding exactly as her training suggested it should.

The rain continued.

Sakura kept her course.

And the pontoons followed.

Inside the forward cabin, Emi was discovering that the term cozy little floating home became somewhat less convincing when the floor moved unexpectedly.

She sat on a secured bench holding a cup of hot tea.

The cup had a locking lid.

That was fortunate.

A wave lifted the pontoon.

The cabin tilted slightly.

Emi looked down.

Then toward the ceiling.

“Okay.”

Another movement.
