Chief Petty Officer Mara Fenwick had come to the conclusion that the younger generation had invented a new language specifically to inconvenience her.
She arrived at this conclusion at approximately seven twenty-three in the morning, shortly after a visiting officer informed one of Horizon Atoll’s supply clerks that he had spent most of the previous evening searching for his inventory screen.
The clerk, naturally, had directed him to the supply office.
The officer had apparently found this unhelpful.
He had returned ten minutes later to explain that he meant his personal inventory.
The clerk had asked whether he was missing any belongings.
The officer had looked at her as though she had sprouted a second head.
And now, as Mara stood in the administrative building with a cup of coffee in one hand and the morning duty report in the other, the clerk was explaining the entire incident with the weary disbelief of somebody who had already decided it was going to be a very long day.
”He kept pointing at the air, Chief.”
Mara looked over the rim of her cup.
”Pointing at it?”
”Yes.”
”Why?”
”Apparently there was supposed to be a menu.”
”A menu.”
”That’s what he said.”
Mara considered this.
Then took another sip of coffee.
”Did you send him to the mess hall?”
The clerk stared.
”Chief.”
”What?”
”That was my first suggestion.”
”Reasonable.”
”He said I didn’t understand.”
”Did you?”
”No!”
Mara nodded.
”Then he was correct.”
The clerk opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Then sighed.
”I suppose.”
Mara returned her attention to the morning report.
Outside the office windows, Horizon Atoll was waking beneath a brilliant tropical sky. The harbor had been unusually busy throughout the night, and the early sunlight revealed the consequences.
Cargo containers occupied the western loading platform.
Two fuel-transfer crews were still working around the deep-water anchorage.
The immense silhouette of the battleship Breakwater rested beyond the primary piers, its funnels quiet and its decks already crowded with sailors beginning their morning duties.
Several Keelborn had remained overnight at the maintenance facilities.
Others were waiting for inspections.
The transport girl Senko was still in the western repair yard, where an Akashi-class specialist and several station engineers had spent hours working around her damaged equipment.
Mara had already received three requests for additional warehouse space.
Two requests for more fuel.
One complaint about the condition of the western pier.
And an astonishingly detailed memorandum from the battleship’s engineering department describing the consequences of operating large machinery without adequate replenishment.
That last report contained six pages.
Mara had read all of them.
She rather liked the engineer responsible.
He appeared to understand that problems became considerably easier to solve when somebody bothered writing them down.
The clerk leaned against the doorway.
”Chief?”
Mara looked up.
”Yes?”
”Is this normal?”
Mara raised an eyebrow.
”Define normal.”
”The new people.”
”Ah.”
”All of them.”
Mara looked toward the harbor.
The clerk continued.
”They’re strange.”
”Yes.”
”I mean really strange.”
”Also yes.”
”Yesterday, one of the newly assigned Keelborn girls asked me where the nearest quest board was.”
Mara considered that.
”What did you tell her?”
”I showed her the duty assignment board.”
”Good.”
”She stared at it for almost a minute.”
”Less good.”
”Then she asked how much experience she’d receive for completing a repair assignment.”
Mara closed her eyes.
There were moments when she regretted understanding even the ordinary language spoken by the people around her.
”What did you tell her?”
”That I had no idea.”
”Honest answer.”
”She looked disappointed.”
”People often do.”
The clerk hesitated.
Then added, ”A man from the visiting battleship called our harbor his new spawn point.”
Mara stopped reading.
Slowly, she looked up.
”He called it his what?”
”Spawn point.”
There was a long silence.
Then Mara sighed.
”Is that supposed to mean something?”
”I assumed you would know.”
”Why?”
”You’re the Chief.”
Mara stared.
The clerk stared back.
Finally, Mara set down her coffee.
”That is not how language works.”
The clerk looked offended.
Mara smiled faintly.
”Don’t worry about it. I’ve heard stranger things from sailors.”
”Have you?”
”Certainly.”
”Such as?”
Mara considered several decades of naval service.
There had been a great many strange things.
Many of them inappropriate for conversation before breakfast.
”Never mind.”
The clerk sighed.
”Chief.”
”Yes?”
”Should we report it?”
Mara looked toward her.
”The vocabulary?”
”The behavior.”
For a moment, the chief’s expression became thoughtful.
She had been asking herself the same question since the earthquake.
New commanders.
New Keelborn detachments.
Personnel whose appearances had changed overnight.
Human officers who sometimes behaved as though they had never seen a naval installation before.
Young women wearing historical warship classifications who asked basic questions about their own equipment.
And those extraordinary shared headaches.
None of it made sense.
Regional Command was still investigating.
The medical department had no explanation.
The official guidance amounted to confirming identities, checking health, maintaining security, and continuing essential operations.
Mara could understand the practical value of those instructions.
What she couldn’t understand was how people from so many different nations and assignments had suddenly developed the same collection of incomprehensible expressions.
Players.
NPCs.
Servers.
Character builds.
Respawns.
And, particularly troubling, logging out.
The last expression seemed to make some of the newcomers genuinely upset.
She had heard one young woman repeat it over and over in the infirmary, her hands shaking as she tried to explain that she couldn’t do it anymore.
Mara had not pressed her for an explanation.
The girl had been frightened enough.
She looked back at the clerk.
”If anyone appears disoriented or unwell, send them to medical. If somebody’s behavior presents a genuine safety concern, report it.”
The clerk nodded.
”And otherwise?”
Mara picked up her coffee.
”Otherwise, we have a naval station to operate.”
The clerk considered that.
Then smiled faintly.
”Fair enough.”
She turned to leave.
Mara stopped her.
”One more thing.”
”Chief?”
”If that officer comes back looking for his inventory screen, send him to Quartermaster Services.”
The clerk blinked.
”But—”
”And tell him they have very thorough records.”
The clerk’s smile widened.
”Yes, Chief.”
She left.
Mara returned to her report.
For approximately twelve seconds, the office was peaceful.
Then another administrative assistant appeared in the doorway.
”Chief?”
Mara lowered her eyes.
”Yes?”
”The new Commander wants to know whether we have a complete list of functioning toilets.”
Mara stopped.
She stared at the assistant.
The assistant stared back.
Then, slowly, Mara set down her pen.
”...Well.”
She considered the request.
Then smiled despite herself.
”At least he’s asking the right questions.”
Kade Bher had discovered a troubling weakness in Horizon Atoll’s restoration plans.
Nobody appeared to know exactly how many of the station’s bathrooms worked.
This was, he felt, an oversight.
A surprisingly serious one.
He stood in the operations room beside the maintenance board, examining the station’s infrastructure reports while an engineer explained why the northeastern barracks had been listed as habitable despite possessing an unreliable water supply.
”Because the building is structurally sound, Commander.”
Kade nodded.
”Good.”
”And the electrical system is operational.”
”Better.”
”And the sleeping quarters are usable.”
”Wonderful.”
The engineer looked relieved.
Then Kade pointed at the plumbing diagram.
”Water?”
The engineer hesitated.
”Intermittent.”
”How intermittent?”
”Depends on the pressure.”
Kade looked at him.
The engineer looked back.
”Right,” Kade said. ”And the pressure depends on?”
”The auxiliary pumping system.”
”Which?”
”Is awaiting repairs.”
Kade nodded slowly.
”So we have a perfectly habitable barracks where the toilets may or may not work.”
The engineer considered that.
”Technically.”
”Marvelous.”
Chief Fenwick entered just in time to hear the last exchange.
She looked toward the maintenance board.
Then toward Kade.
”Commander.”
”Chief.”
”You’re investigating the barracks?”
”Apparently.”
”Any particular reason?”
Kade gestured toward the plumbing schematic.
”I’d like to avoid assigning several hundred additional sailors to buildings whose sanitation arrangements are based on optimism.”
Mara looked at the engineer.
The engineer sighed.
”We’ve been using temporary facilities for the worst sections.”
Kade nodded.
”Good. How many temporary facilities?”
The engineer consulted his notes.
Chief Fenwick set down her coffee.
The question was reasonable.
Inconvenient, certainly.
But reasonable.
The arrival of Breakwater had created an immediate accommodation problem. The ship possessed its own berthing spaces and galley, and most of its crew could continue living aboard while repairs and fuel transfers proceeded.
However, the engineering and medical personnel had requested access to shore facilities.
The damaged anti-aircraft gallery required outside assistance.
Some sailors had injuries needing continued observation.
Others needed space for meetings and maintenance planning.
And if the battleship’s crew intended to remain at Horizon for any considerable period, the station would need to decide how to support them without exhausting its already limited resources.
None of those questions could be answered by simply declaring that the base possessed barracks.
The barracks had to function.
Kade looked at the engineer.
”Look, I’m not asking you to rebuild the entire building before lunch.”
The man relaxed slightly.
”Understood.”
”I just want to know which parts are usable.”
”Right.”
”And which aren’t.”
”Yes.”
”And why.”
The engineer nodded.
”Of course.”
Kade smiled.
”Excellent. Then we’re making progress.”
Chief Fenwick watched him for a moment.
He was eighteen.
That remained one of the strangest facts in her current administrative life.
A naval Commander.
Eighteen years old.
Shorter than several of the officers assigned beneath him.
Possessing a habit of speaking as though he were perpetually one remark away from making somebody regret asking a question.
And yet he was taking a surprisingly practical interest in things previous commanders had considered beneath their notice.
Water pressure.
Food storage.
Medical supplies.
Repair materials.
The availability of qualified personnel.
The condition of the docks.
The actual contents of the shipments arriving at the station.
He had not begun by asking how many battleships he could deploy.
He had begun by asking which facilities could support them.
Mara wasn’t sure whether she found that reassuring or merely unusual.
Possibly both.
The engineer gathered his papers.
”I’ll have a revised accommodation survey by this afternoon.”
Kade nodded.
”Thank you.”
The man left.
Chief Fenwick approached.
”Commander.”
”Hm?”
”Did you sleep?”
Kade glanced toward her.
”Yes.”
”How much?”
He considered the question.
”Enough to be dangerous.”
”That’s not a number.”
”I’ve noticed people keep objecting to that answer.”
Mara raised an eyebrow.
”Because it’s not an answer.”
”Very demanding workplace.”
She smiled.
Then looked toward the board.
”You’ve been busy.”
”Somebody has to investigate the thrilling mysteries of our plumbing.”
”Naturally.”
Kade turned another page.
Mara watched him.
Then asked something she had been considering since the previous evening.
”Commander, may I ask you a personal question?”
He glanced up.
”Depends how personal.”
”Nothing inappropriate.”
”Reassuring.”
She hesitated.
Then continued.
”Where did you serve before Horizon Atoll?”
Kade’s hand stopped moving.
Only for an instant.
Then he looked toward her.
It was a reasonable question.
A very reasonable question.
Chief Fenwick had spent eleven years at the station. She had served at other installations before that. She knew the kinds of experience normally expected of someone assigned command responsibility.
And Kade had no conventional record that could adequately explain the situation.
He had been attending school before entering a VRMMORPG.
He had not served in the Admiralty Union’s armed forces.
He had also, in a previous existence, spent sixteen years fighting a war in a different world.
Neither answer was particularly useful.
The second was none of her business.
He considered the question carefully.
Then replied:
”Nothing that translates neatly to this posting.”
Mara blinked.
”How so?”
”Different circumstances.”
”Different service?”
He looked at her.
”Something like that.”
Mara studied him.
There were clearly details he wasn’t offering.
She could see that.
But his expression wasn’t evasive in the manner of someone trying to hide a recent disciplinary incident.
It was simply closed.
As though the subject belonged somewhere he did not intend to invite her.
Mara had known enough soldiers to recognize that expression.
She nodded.
”Understood.”
Kade regarded her for a moment.
Then smiled faintly.
”Thank you.”
She returned the smile.
”You’re welcome.”
After a brief silence, she looked toward the infrastructure board.
”So. Toilets.”
Kade sighed.
”Apparently our greatest strategic challenge.”
Mara laughed.
And the subject of his past was allowed to remain exactly where he had left it.
The people who had lived at Horizon Atoll before the new arrivals did not spend their mornings contemplating the nature of reality.
Mostly, they contemplated machinery.
Machinery was considerably more immediate.
It had a distressing habit of breaking at inconvenient moments, and unlike philosophical questions, a failed water pump could leave an entire barracks without anything to drink.
Senior Maintenance Engineer Dain Okoro had been contemplating Pump Station Four since six thirty.
He was forty-eight years old, had worked at Horizon for nearly seventeen years, and possessed a collection of professional qualifications that would have impressed almost anyone who understood what they meant.
Unfortunately, none of those qualifications had persuaded the pump to start.
He stood in the main distribution chamber beneath a row of overhead pipes, examining the machine with an expression of personal disappointment.
”Well.”
The pump remained silent.
Dain folded his arms.
”That is unfortunate.”
A young technician beside him looked toward the control panel.
”Sir?”
Dain pointed.
”The bearing housing.”
The technician examined it.
”What about it?”
”It’s still warm.”
”Is that bad?”
”Considering we isolated the equipment twenty minutes ago? Not ideal.”
The technician winced.
Dain sighed.
The pump was one of several serving the naval station’s water-processing and distribution system. It wasn’t the most important piece of equipment on Horizon, nor the largest, but its failure had become increasingly inconvenient.
For months, the station had been moving water around the problem.
Other pumps worked harder.
Storage tanks provided limited buffers.
Buildings farther from the main distribution line experienced pressure fluctuations.
Maintenance personnel adjusted valves, rerouted supply, and performed increasingly desperate acts of industrial persuasion.
The system functioned.
Barely.
That was the trouble with barely functional systems.
They developed a habit of expecting everyone else to compensate for their shortcomings.
Dain disliked that expectation.
He particularly disliked it from pumps.
The technician crouched beside the housing.
”Can we replace the bearing?”
Dain nodded.
”Yes.”
”Do we have one?”
Dain looked toward the storeroom.
A long silence followed.
Then he sighed.
”That has traditionally been the difficulty.”
The technician nodded.
”Right.”
A voice came from the doorway.
”What size?”
Dain turned.
Two young women stood beside a trolley loaded with sealed crates.
One wore a practical maintenance uniform with an Akashi-class insignia.
The other wore the ordinary work clothes of a civilian technician, though a small synthetic-service badge rested on her collar.
The Keelborn girl had dark hair tied back and carried a clipboard.
The synthetic woman had short ash-gray hair, dark eyes, and an expression of patient curiosity.
Dain recognized her.
”Tali.”
The synthetic technician nodded.
”Morning, Engineer.”
”Morning. What’s all this?”
”New parts from the western pier.”
Dain stared at the trolley.
Then looked toward the Akashi-class girl.
She smiled.
”Hana. Repair Keelborn.”
”Ah.”
He glanced at the crates.
”Those for us?”
”Possibly.”
Dain’s expression changed.
”Possibly?”
Hana opened the manifest.
”Industrial pump assemblies, replacement bearings, mechanical seals, electrical connectors, and motor-service components.”
Dain slowly lowered his clipboard.
He stared at her.
Then at the trolley.
Then back.
”You’re joking.”
Hana blinked.
”No?”
Dain looked toward Tali.
She nodded.
”Delivery confirmed. Senko Maru brought them in last night.”
Dain closed his eyes.
For a moment, he appeared to be experiencing something approaching religious fulfillment.
Hana looked toward Tali.
Tali looked back.
Neither spoke.
Then Dain opened his eyes.
”Please tell me there’s an impeller service kit in there.”
Hana consulted the manifest.
”There are three.”
Dain inhaled.
Very slowly.
Then he whispered:
”Beautiful.”
Hana grinned.
”I know.”
The two exchanged a look of immediate understanding.
Tali watched them.
Then shook her head.
”Wonderful. Two of you.”
Dain turned.
”What?”
”Nothing.”
”That sounded judgmental.”
”It was.”
Hana laughed.
Dain examined the trolley again.
”All right. Let’s see what we’ve got.”
The next twenty minutes were the happiest he’d been at work in months.
Not because anything had been repaired yet.
Because he finally possessed enough replacement components to begin the repair properly.
They checked part numbers.
Inspected packaging.
Compared specifications against the station’s outdated maintenance records.
Then Hana pointed toward the isolated pump.
”That’s the one?”
Dain nodded.
”Pump Four.”
”What’s wrong?”
”Several things.”
”Good.”
Dain raised an eyebrow.
”Good?”
Hana blinked.
Then smiled apologetically.
”I meant good that we can identify them.”
He considered that.
Then laughed.
”Fair enough.”
Tali rolled the tool trolley closer.
Dain looked toward her.
”Electrical isolation?”
”Confirmed at the local disconnect. I’ll verify the downstream circuit before anyone removes the motor cover.”
”Good.”
The synthetic technician moved toward the panel.
She was part of Horizon Atoll’s maintenance department.
Not recently assigned.
Not an outsider.
She had worked with Dain for several years, beginning as a junior service unit attached to the Industrial Ordnance Program’s civilian labor distribution network.
Her body was synthetic.
Her memories were not.
She remembered learning the station’s old systems.
She remembered Dain teaching her how to recognize the difference between a harmless vibration and a bearing failure.
She remembered an engineer who used to bring fruit to the maintenance workshop every Friday.
She remembered being frightened during her first Blackwake alert, when the outer batteries opened fire and the floor shook beneath her feet.
She remembered everything that had happened yesterday.
The earthquake.
The sirens.
The newly arrived Keelborn collapsing in the streets.
She had spent much of the night carrying blankets and emergency equipment between the infirmary and the barracks.
Nobody had told her why the girls had fallen unconscious.
Nobody had explained why several of them now looked entirely different.
And one of the repair Keelborn had asked her whether she was an NPC.
Tali hadn’t known what that meant.
She had asked.
The girl had become very embarrassed and changed the subject.
Tali had assumed it was a new technical abbreviation.
There were so many technical abbreviations.
Many of them were unnecessary.
She continued checking the electrical connections.
Beside her, Hana crouched to examine the motor housing.
Dain watched.
”You’re comfortable working on industrial pumps?”
Hana nodded.
”With proper documentation and supervision, yes.”
He raised an eyebrow.
”Supervision?”
”You’re the engineer responsible for this installation.”
Dain considered that.
Then smiled.
”That’s a pleasant change.”
Hana looked up.
”From what?”
”Most newly assigned specialists arrive expecting to know everything.”
She laughed.
”I definitely don’t.”
”Good.”
”Although I know enough to recognize that this pump has had an unfortunate life.”
Dain nodded.
”That it has.”
The technician returned from the electrical panel.
”Isolation verified.”
”Excellent,” Dain said.
Then he reached for his tools.
For the next hour, the three of them worked together.
Not magically.
Not instantly.
They drained the relevant section of the system.
Removed the worn protective housing.
Disconnected the motor from the pump assembly.
Inspected the damaged bearing.
Then discovered that the coupling had also suffered enough wear to require replacement.
Dain examined the damaged component.
His expression darkened.
”Of course.”
Hana looked toward it.
”Oh.”
Tali leaned closer.
”That’s not supposed to look like that.”
Dain nodded.
”No.”
Hana checked the new parts.
Then smiled.
”Wait.”
Dain looked up.
”What?”
”One of Senko’s crates includes a replacement coupling assembly.”
He stared.
”Really?”
She nodded.
”Right here.”
He looked toward the ceiling.
Then lowered his head.
”I could kiss that transport girl.”
Tali regarded him.
”She might prefer a thank-you note.”
Hana burst out laughing.
Dain considered that.
Then nodded.
”Fair point.”
They continued.
The replacement bearing went in.
The coupling was changed.
New seals were installed.
Damaged insulation was removed.
Corroded connectors were replaced.
Tali completed the electrical checks.
Dain inspected the mechanical alignment.
Hana helped prepare the refurbished assembly for testing.
By the time they were finished, the morning had disappeared.
Dain wiped his hands on a cloth.
Then looked toward the pump.
”All right.”
Hana stood beside him.
”Ready?”
”Almost.”
Tali checked the panel again.
”Electrical tests complete. No short circuits detected. Grounding checks satisfactory.”
Dain nodded.
”Good.”
He looked toward the technicians.
”Everybody clear?”
Several voices answered.
”Clear!”
He verified the downstream valves.
Then authorized power.
The motor hummed.
The pump began turning.
At first, it produced a faint vibration.
Dain listened.
Hana listened.
Tali watched the instruments.
The pump settled into a steady operating rhythm.
A pressure indicator rose.
Then stabilized.
Water began moving through the distribution line.
Dain stared.
The technician beside him smiled.
”Sir?”
Dain held up one hand.
”Quiet.”
Everyone fell silent.
He listened to the machinery.
The sound was smooth.
Steady.
A little rougher than he would have preferred.
But no alarming metallic knock.
No sharp vibration.
No strained coupling.
He exhaled.
”Well.”
Hana grinned.
”Good well?”
Dain looked toward her.
Then smiled.
”Very good well.”
Tali examined the pressure gauge.
”Output is stable within the initial test range.”
Dain nodded.
”Excellent.”
This story has been unlawfully obtained without the author’s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.
The young technician raised both hands.
”IT WORKS!”
Dain pointed.
”Temporarily.”
The technician froze.
Hana laughed.
Dain continued.
”We’ll run it under observation, check temperatures, verify the seals, and make sure the distribution network doesn’t produce another problem.”
The technician lowered his hands.
”Right.”
Dain smiled.
”But yes.”
He looked toward the pump.
”It works.”
For the first time in months, Pump Station Four was doing more than occupying space.
Dain watched the pressure rise along the auxiliary distribution line.
Then he looked at Hana.
”How long have you been stationed here?”
She hesitated.
”Technically? Since yesterday.”
Dain stared.
”...Yesterday?”
Hana nodded.
He looked toward the restored pump.
Then back at her.
A slow smile appeared.
”Well.”
He offered his hand.
”Welcome to Horizon Atoll.”
Hana shook it.
”Thank you.”
Tali smiled beside them.
The pump continued running.
And several buildings across the naval station began receiving a steadier supply of water than they’d enjoyed in months.
Not perfect pressure.
Not full restoration.
But better.
Considerably better.
The next victory was smaller.
And much louder.
It involved the northeastern electrical distribution board, a replacement circuit breaker, two electricians, a Keelborn repair specialist, and an argument about whether anybody could remember which cable fed the old communications annex.
Nobody could.
That was the problem.
The original drawings had been amended several times.
The labels no longer matched the physical installation.
And somebody, years earlier, had rerouted a circuit without updating the final maintenance record.
Hana regarded the junction panel.
Then the diagram.
Then the junction panel again.
”That’s upsetting.”
Dain stood beside her.
”Yes.”
”Who did this?”
”Couldn’t tell you.”
”Would you like to know?”
”Very much.”
Tali examined the cable markings.
”The recorded connection doesn’t match the test result.”
Dain sighed.
”I know.”
Kade arrived halfway through the investigation.
He had been following the morning’s maintenance updates between meetings with the quartermaster and the harbor engineering staff.
When he stepped into the electrical building, the first thing he saw was Hana sitting on an overturned crate, glaring at a diagram.
Dain stood beside the open distribution cabinet.
Tali held a testing instrument.
Several electricians were discussing the circuit labels.
Kade stopped.
”Having fun?”
Hana looked up.
”No.”
”Encouraging.”
Dain raised one hand.
”Commander.”
”Engineer.”
”We’ve got a wiring problem.”
Kade looked at the cabinet.
”Is that the technical term?”
”One of them.”
”Excellent.”
Hana pointed at the diagram.
”This is supposed to be the communications annex feeder.”
Kade nodded.
”Right.”
”Except it isn’t.”
”Less right.”
”And the actual feeder is connected through a different section that the records don’t identify correctly.”
He considered that.
Then looked toward Dain.
”Can we identify it safely?”
”Yes. It’ll take time.”
”Then take the time.”
Hana looked at him.
”You don’t want it done quickly?”
Kade raised an eyebrow.
”Not particularly, if quickly means setting fire to something.”
Dain smiled.
”Good answer.”
Kade looked toward the old distribution equipment.
”What would happen if we energized the wrong circuit?”
Tali answered.
”Potential overload. Equipment damage. Possibly a fire, depending on the condition of the connected devices.”
He nodded.
”Wonderful. Let’s avoid that.”
Hana sighed.
”We intend to.”
Kade smiled.
”Then I’ll stop distracting the professionals.”
He turned toward the door.
Dain called after him.
”Commander.”
Kade looked back.
”Yes?”
”Pump Four’s running.”
Kade stopped.
Then turned fully.
”Really?”
Dain nodded.
”Reduced service load for now. Still under observation. But it’s moving water.”
Kade looked toward Hana.
She smiled.
Tali nodded.
He considered the news.
Then smiled.
”Well, that’s a remarkably good way to ruin our reputation for incompetence.”
Hana laughed.
Dain shook his head.
Kade nodded toward the functioning pump report.
”Good work.”
He looked at each of them.
”All of you.”
For a moment, Dain seemed faintly surprised.
Then he nodded.
”Thank you, Commander.”
Kade left.
Behind him, the electricians returned to their circuit tracing.
The distribution board remained partly inactive.
But the replacement components were there now.
The documentation could be corrected.
And, with a little luck, the station’s communications annex might have reliable power by the following day.
Nobody was promising it.
Nobody was pretending the entire electrical network could be restored from one supply shipment.
But the work had begun.
Outside, Horizon Atoll continued waking.
And beneath the pleasant tropical sunlight, the people who had lived there for years began discovering that the newcomers might actually be useful.
Even if nobody could understand half the things they said.
By early afternoon, the mess hall’s northern washroom had working water pressure.
This might not have sounded like a particularly important event to anyone outside Horizon Atoll.
To the kitchen staff, however, it bordered on a miracle.
The news reached Mara Fenwick while she was reviewing the station’s accommodation report with an elderly supply officer named Corwin Hale.
Hale had served at Horizon since before the Pestilence.
He was a broad, gray-haired man who possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of shipping regulations, warehouse inventories, and the kinds of administrative disasters that occurred when officers assumed supplies would simply appear because they had signed the correct paperwork.
He was also growing increasingly irritated with the new arrivals.
”Another one called me a non-player character.”
Mara looked up.
”Oh?”
”Yes.”
”What did you say?”
”I told him my name was Corwin.”
”Reasonable.”
”He laughed.”
Mara’s expression became less amused.
”At you?”
”Not exactly.”
Hale considered the exchange.
”He looked surprised. Then he apologized.”
”Good.”
”Then he asked how long I’d been working here.”
”How long did you tell him?”
”Twenty-two years.”
Mara nodded.
”And?”
”He stared at me for a very long time.”
”Perhaps he was impressed.”
”Chief.”
”What?”
”Then he asked whether I remembered all twenty-two years.”
Mara slowly lowered her pen.
That was a strange question.
Stranger than the talk about menus, respawns, and quests.
”Did you answer?”
Hale looked offended.
”Of course I remember them.”
She nodded.
”I know.”
”I remember my first commanding officer. I remember the typhoon that tore the roof off Warehouse Four. I remember the year we had to ration freshwater because the main processing plant failed. I remember when this station actually had enough fuel to operate the heavy patrol groups without begging regional logistics for another shipment.”
He gestured toward the harbor.
”And I remember when the western loading pier was new.”
Mara smiled faintly.
”That was some time ago.”
”Don’t remind me.”
He leaned back.
”What’s wrong with these people?”
Mara considered the question.
Then looked toward the accommodation report.
”I don’t know.”
”That seems to be everybody’s answer.”
”Unfortunately.”
Hale rubbed his forehead.
”Some of them behave as though they arrived yesterday.”
Mara raised an eyebrow.
”Some did.”
”You know what I mean.”
She nodded.
Yes.
She did.
Yesterday, one of the newly assigned Keelborn had asked whether the flooded coastal cities mentioned in the history briefing had really existed.
The station’s history instructor had looked at her in disbelief.
Of course they’d existed.
His grandparents had been born in one of them.
He possessed family photographs.
He had grown up hearing stories about the evacuation.
The girl had apologized, then asked whether the photographs were generated assets.
The instructor hadn’t understood the expression.
He’d shown her the photographs anyway.
Afterward, she’d sat quietly for almost an hour.
Mara had heard about the incident from Irena Holt.
The medic had been concerned.
Not about the photographs.
About the girl’s reaction.
The new personnel seemed to be experiencing an extraordinary kind of disorientation.
They were unfamiliar with places they supposedly knew.
They asked questions about basic history.
They used terminology nobody else recognized.
And many had begun behaving as though they were frightened of the very world they lived in.
Mara could understand that fear.
The medical crisis alone would have been enough.
The physical changes were worse.
But the unfamiliar vocabulary remained a mystery.
Hale tapped the report.
”And now one of the visiting officers wants to know whether the barracks have a fast-travel point.”
Mara stared.
”A what?”
”Exactly.”
She sighed.
Hale continued.
”He seemed disappointed when I said there was a railway station.”
”Did you explain the timetable?”
”Yes.”
”Good.”
”He asked whether he could skip the journey.”
Mara closed her eyes.
For a moment, she pictured a world in which entire trains could simply omit the inconvenient business of traveling.
It sounded rather pleasant.
Then she remembered the railway department’s maintenance reports.
Perhaps not.
She opened her eyes.
”Corwin.”
”Chief?”
”Did he need to go somewhere?”
”Yes.”
”Where?”
”The western pier.”
Mara stared.
Hale stared back.
”The western pier,” she repeated.
”Yes.”
”From the barracks?”
”Yes.”
She looked toward the window.
The western pier was less than a kilometer away.
There were roads.
There were utility vehicles.
There was even a scheduled station shuttle.
Mara slowly exhaled.
”Did you tell him to walk?”
Hale nodded.
”Yes.”
”And?”
”He looked upset.”
She considered that.
Then smiled.
”Well.”
Hale narrowed his eyes.
”Don’t.”
”Perhaps he should level up his walking.”
For the first time that afternoon, Corwin Hale laughed.
It began as an incredulous snort.
Then grew into something considerably louder.
Mara found herself laughing too.
Neither of them actually knew what level up meant in the way the newcomers used it.
But they’d heard it often enough that the joke seemed reasonable.
Eventually, Hale wiped his eyes.
”You’re terrible, Chief.”
”I’ve been told.”
”By whom?”
”Mostly people who don’t like completing requisition forms.”
He laughed again.
Then the amusement faded.
He looked toward the harbor.
”Still.”
Mara waited.
”Some of them look terrified.”
Her smile softened.
”Yes.”
”And the Commander?”
”What about him?”
”Is he the same?”
She considered Kade.
The questions.
The strange remarks.
The refusal to discuss his earlier service.
The way he treated obvious safety requirements as more important than appearances.
And the fact that he had just spent part of his morning investigating whether the station’s water pressure was sufficient to accommodate additional personnel.
”He’s unusual.”
Hale snorted.
”That’s an understatement.”
”But he listens.”
The older officer looked toward her.
She continued.
”He asks questions before issuing instructions. He doesn’t pretend to know machinery better than the engineers. He notices when people haven’t slept.”
Hale nodded slowly.
”That’s something.”
”Yes.”
Mara glanced toward the station map.
Then smiled faintly.
”And he hasn’t asked us to relocate the drydock.”
Hale stared.
Then laughed.
”Well, thank the seas for that.”
The two returned to their paperwork.
Beyond the windows, the naval base continued operating.
The people who had always lived there remained.
They had jobs.
Families.
Arguments.
Old grievances.
Preferences.
Memories of happier years.
They didn’t know what a player was.
They didn’t know why the new arrivals talked as though the world were something that had suddenly begun existing around them.
And frankly, most had far too much work to do to spend every waking moment investigating it.
So they learned the new expressions.
They learned which questions made the newcomers uncomfortable.
They tried to be patient.
And, whenever possible, they helped.
Because the new arrivals were here now.
The ocean beyond the reef hadn’t become any safer.
The station hadn’t become any less broken.
And there were only so many people left willing to keep it running.
At three seventeen in the afternoon, Captain Daniel Mercer discovered that transferring an entire battleship to a new homeport involved more paperwork than firing twelve fourteen-inch guns.
He found this personally offensive.
He sat across from Kade in the station’s administrative conference room, looking at a collection of documents spread across the table.
Beside him stood his executive officer, a tall man named Adrian Cole.
Cole had served as a naval history enthusiast and amateur simulation organizer before the Crisis. He was the kind of person who believed a spreadsheet was a perfectly acceptable way to spend a Saturday evening.
At the moment, his appreciation for spreadsheets was being severely tested.
Chief Fenwick stood near the filing cabinet.
Corwin Hale occupied the far end of the table with a cup of tea and a growing collection of forms.
Kade examined the first document.
Then the second.
Then looked toward Mercer.
”You want Breakwater attached to Horizon Atoll.”
Mercer nodded.
”Yes.”
”Not just temporary repairs?”
”Permanent homeport assignment, if we can arrange it.”
Kade raised an eyebrow.
”That’s a rather substantial decision.”
”Yes.”
”How substantial?”
Mercer looked toward Cole.
The executive officer opened a folder.
”Our crew discussed it after the battle.”
Kade glanced at him.
”All of them?”
”Representatives from every department. Then we put the question to the full crew.”
”Good.”
Mercer nodded.
”We don’t want to go wandering around the Pacific looking for a better place while running short on fuel and ammunition.”
Kade smiled faintly.
”Reasonable.”
”And we’re going to need proper maintenance support.”
”Also reasonable.”
”Plus the station has a deep-water anchorage.”
”One of our few genuinely excellent features.”
Cole looked toward the window.
”And a drydock.”
Kade slowly turned toward him.
Cole hesitated.
”...Eventually?”
Kade smiled.
”Excellent recovery.”
Mercer laughed.
The captain gestured toward the harbor.
”Look, we know the base isn’t in great shape.”
”Very diplomatic.”
”We’ve seen the reports.”
”Then you know it’s worse than it looks.”
”Probably.”
Kade nodded.
”Excellent. We’re making progress.”
Mercer leaned forward.
”But we’ve also seen people working on it. The transport got unloaded. The fueling team got enough equipment functioning to stabilize our immediate situation. Your engineers started helping with the damaged gallery almost as soon as we’d secured.”
He glanced toward Chief Fenwick.
”And I appreciate that.”
Mara nodded.
”You’re welcome, Captain.”
Mercer looked back at Kade.
”We could try transferring somewhere more developed.”
”Probably.”
”But we’d still need fuel to get there.”
”Definitely.”
”And we’d be competing with other fleets for repair berths and supplies.”
”Also probably.”
Mercer folded his arms.
”So we’d rather stay.”
Kade considered him.
”Because this place has room.”
”Yes.”
”And because you think you can help build it up.”
Mercer nodded.
”Exactly.”
Kade looked toward Cole.
The executive officer returned the look.
”Captain Mercer isn’t speaking for himself alone, Commander. The crew agreed. We want a base we can contribute to, not just somewhere to dock until we burn through the next fuel allocation.”
Kade nodded slowly.
That was important.
An actual battleship wasn’t a single Keelborn who could walk into his office and request reassignment.
It was a large vessel operated by a group of human beings.
Their lives depended on the crew working together.
A captain could make command decisions, but permanent station attachment involved more than deciding where to leave the anchor.
Kade looked toward the documents.
”What happens if we accept?”
Corwin Hale answered.
”Breakwater becomes a homeported vessel under Horizon Atoll’s administrative support structure, subject to approval by the relevant naval authority. Her captain retains responsibility for his ship, while local operational coordination and station support fall under the Commander.”
Kade nodded.
”Supplies?”
Hale consulted the forms.
”Allocated through approved requisitions and whatever additional resources the crew can lawfully obtain.”
”Fuel?”
”Limited initial replenishment. Longer-term allocations will require a revised request.”
”Repairs?”
”Existing station facilities can provide some support, but major work will remain constrained until more equipment is restored.”
”Berthing?”
”Most crew accommodations remain aboard ship until suitable shore arrangements become available.”
Kade nodded.
”That answers the obvious questions.”
Mercer raised an eyebrow.
”What about the non-obvious ones?”
Kade looked at him.
”How many of your crew can actually operate the ship without someone standing behind them explaining which lever does what?”
Cole coughed.
Mercer closed his eyes.
A long silence followed.
Then the captain sighed.
”We’re working on it.”
Kade smiled faintly.
”I thought so.”
Mercer leaned back.
”Yesterday’s battle was a rather intense training exercise.”
”Yes.”
”Very educational.”
”Yes.”
”Would prefer not to repeat it.”
”Excellent attitude.”
Cole opened another folder.
”We’ve identified gaps in training. Damage-control coordination, ammunition handling, compartment organization, emergency communications, and several areas of machinery operation.”
Kade looked toward him.
”Can your people help train the station’s support personnel?”
Cole considered that.
”Some of them, yes. Others still need training themselves.”
”Good.”
Mercer raised an eyebrow.
”Good?”
”Honest answer.”
The captain smiled.
Kade continued.
”I’m not expecting Breakwater to arrive and magically solve our defensive problems.”
Mercer laughed.
”Very good.”
”She needs fuel. Repairs. Food. Medical support. Ammunition.”
”Yes.”
”And she’ll need somewhere safe to remain while we sort those things out.”
”Yes.”
Kade looked at the ship’s condition report.
”Then let’s start there.”
He glanced toward Corwin.
”Can we process this as a provisional station attachment pending authorization?”
The older officer nodded.
”Yes. We can prepare the application and maintain Breakwater under temporary local support arrangements until the transfer is approved.”
Kade looked back at Mercer.
”That work?”
The captain smiled.
”Perfectly.”
”Good.”
Kade held out his hand.
Mercer shook it.
”Welcome to Horizon, Captain.”
Mercer glanced toward the windows.
The old drydock stood beyond the harbor.
Half the surrounding infrastructure looked ready to retire.
Somebody had parked a damaged utility vehicle beside the supply warehouse.
And a repair technician was arguing with a sailor about the correct way to carry an ammunition-handling component.
Mercer smiled.
”Glad to be here.”
Kade considered that.
Then sighed.
”You’re all very strange people.”
Cole laughed.
Mercer grinned.
”Says the eighteen-year-old Commander of the worst naval base in the Pacific.”
Kade raised an eyebrow.
”Fair.”
Chief Fenwick looked toward Hale.
The quartermaster was smiling.
For the first time in a long while, Horizon Atoll was receiving transfer requests from people who actually wanted to stay.
That was unfamiliar.
Mara rather liked it.
The next transfer meeting was considerably more complicated.
Not because the people involved were difficult.
Although some of them were.
It was complicated because four Keelborn were trying to make decisions about their own futures inside an administrative system that did not entirely recognize those decisions as theirs to make.
Calla and June arrived first.
The two Atlanta-class girls wore freshly cleaned uniforms, though both still looked tired from the convoy battle.
Elsa followed, her left arm supported by a temporary medical brace.
Nadya came last, carrying a cup of tea and an expression of mild impatience.
Kade looked up from the table.
”Morning.”
Nadya glanced toward the window.
”It’s afternoon.”
He looked at the clock.
Then back at her.
”Tragic.”
Calla smiled.
June shook her head.
Elsa looked amused.
Chief Fenwick gestured toward the chairs.
”Please sit.”
They did.
Nadya set her tea down.
”Right. Who do I have to threaten to get assigned here?”
The room fell silent.
Kade slowly looked toward her.
Chief Fenwick stopped writing.
Calla closed her eyes.
Elsa sighed.
June stared at the table.
Nadya blinked.
”What?”
Kade considered the question.
Then answered.
”Preferably nobody. Threatening people tends to complicate paperwork.”
Nadya smiled.
”Oh, good.”
”Good?”
”I was hoping.”
Calla sighed.
”She means we want to request transfers.”
Kade nodded.
”That’s less alarming.”
June leaned forward.
”All four of us.”
He looked toward her.
”Really?”
She nodded.
Calla opened a folder.
”We’ve discussed the situation. Horizon needs escorts. We need somewhere stable to work from. The base has repair facilities, even if they’re limited, and Senko is already being attached here.”
Elsa added, ”Breakwater’s crew is staying.”
Kade nodded.
”Provisionally.”
”Provisionally,” Elsa agreed.
Nadya folded her arms.
”Then why shouldn’t we?”
Kade considered that.
”Honestly? I don’t see a reason you can’t request it.”
June looked relieved.
”But,” he continued, ”I want to make sure everyone understands what they’re volunteering for.”
Nadya raised an eyebrow.
”That’s ominous.”
Kade nodded.
”Quite.”
He gestured toward the station map.
”Horizon Atoll has limited industrial capacity. Our primary drydock is inactive. Several workshops need repairs. We have fuel shortages, unreliable power distribution, and enough infrastructure problems to make the maintenance department develop a personal relationship with several hundred broken machines.”
Elsa smiled.
”Sounds familiar.”
”And,” Kade continued, ”we don’t have a fully restored defensive network.”
Calla nodded.
”We’ve seen the reports.”
”Good.”
June looked toward the harbor.
”We also saw the training area.”
Kade glanced at her.
”Hm?”
”The destroyer girls practicing movement and formation.”
He nodded.
”Yes.”
”They need help.”
Kade was quiet for a moment.
Then nodded again.
”Yes.”
June glanced toward Calla.
Then continued.
”We’ve both got anti-aircraft experience from before the Crisis. Some of the techniques will need adapting, but we can help with the basics.”
Calla nodded.
”Communications. Defensive formations. Target tracking. Keeping people from chasing every aircraft that crosses the horizon.”
Kade looked toward her.
”Useful.”
”Very.”
Elsa leaned back.
”I can help the heavy cruisers.”
”Also useful.”
Nadya smiled.
”And I’m excellent at explaining why old battleships deserve respect.”
Kade raised an eyebrow.
”Is that a training qualification?”
”It should be.”
He smiled faintly.
”I’ll put it under consideration.”
Elsa laughed.
Nadya looked pleased.
Chief Fenwick opened the transfer documents.
”Very well. We can begin the applications. You’ll remain attached to the convoy’s existing command structure until your releases and new assignments are approved.”
Calla nodded.
”Understood.”
Mara looked toward the forms.
”Each unit will need to be entered into the station’s asset register.”
The room became quieter.
Not silent.
Just quieter.
Kade noticed.
He looked toward the four girls.
Calla’s expression had tightened.
June glanced down.
Elsa looked toward the window.
Nadya continued sipping her tea, but her smile had disappeared.
Chief Fenwick, accustomed to the terminology, didn’t immediately understand the change.
She examined the register.
”That’s standard procedure.”
Kade looked at the document.
EMBODIED NAVAL ASSET TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION.
He knew the form.
He had spent enough time reading similar documents since the Crisis to recognize it instantly.
A military unit was being transferred between administrative authorities.
In the AU’s language, the process resembled the reassignment of equipment.
The names were listed.
The classes.
The Pendants.
The operational capabilities.
The condition reports.
Then came the space for command authorization.
Kade looked at Calla.
”Do all four of you want this assignment?”
Chief Fenwick glanced toward him.
The question wasn’t part of the form.
Calla blinked.
Then nodded.
”Yes.”
Kade looked toward June.
”June?”
She nodded.
”Yes.”
”Elsa?”
”Yes.”
”Nadya?”
The older-design battleship girl smiled faintly.
”Obviously.”
Kade nodded.
”Good.”
He looked toward the chief.
”Then let’s proceed with their requests.”
Mara studied him.
For a moment, she seemed ready to ask why he’d bothered confirming something already implied by the applications.
Then she looked toward the women seated across the table.
Their expressions had changed.
Calla seemed relieved.
June’s shoulders had relaxed.
Elsa was smiling faintly.
And Nadya had returned to her tea.
Mara looked back at Kade.
He had already begun reviewing the operational condition reports.
The question had cost him nothing.
But it had clearly mattered to the girls.
She made a small notation beside the applications.
Assignment requested by personnel concerned.
There was no official field for it.
She wrote it anyway.
Kade glanced toward the note.
Then looked at her.
Mara gave him a small smile.
He returned it.
Nothing else was said.
The paperwork continued.
Calla and June discussed how their Atlanta-class equipment might support the station’s developing anti-aircraft training program.
Elsa wanted to examine the repair capacity available for her damaged cruiser rigging.
Nadya was interested in the old coastal artillery and asked whether anybody had considered using the surviving batteries as instructional equipment.
Marina, who had joined them during the latter half of the meeting, nearly fell in love with the idea.
By the time the applications were complete, the four women had provisional arrangements for local support and work while their formal transfers were considered.
Nothing had been guaranteed.
Their former assignments still had to authorize release.
Regional Command still had to approve the destination.
And Horizon Atoll would need to demonstrate that it could support them without compromising its other responsibilities.
But the process had begun.
Calla looked toward Kade.
”Commander.”
He glanced up.
”Hm?”
”Thank you.”
”For the paperwork?”
”For asking.”
Kade considered that.
Then shrugged.
”Seemed like the sensible thing to do.”
Calla smiled.
”It was.”
Elsa rose carefully.
June gathered her documents.
Nadya finished the last of her tea.
Then looked toward Kade.
”Commander.”
”Yes?”
”Do you have anywhere to practice twelve-inch gunnery?”
Kade slowly closed his eyes.
There was a long pause.
Then he answered.
”Please tell me you’re asking about an approved offshore range.”
Nadya grinned.
”Of course.”
He opened one eye.
”Wonderful.”
She laughed.
Calla shook her head.
Elsa looked amused.
June smiled.
Kade sighed.
Horizon Atoll was getting more battleships.
Apparently, this was becoming a pattern.
At the medical building, Irena Holt was having an entirely different sort of conversation.
It began when a young destroyer girl asked whether the food in the infirmary was real.
Irena looked toward the tray.
There was bread.
Soup.
A small dish of fruit.
And a cup of tea.
She considered the question.
Then looked back at the girl.
”Yes.”
The destroyer stared.
”Really?”
Irena raised an eyebrow.
”Would you like me to bring you something else?”
”No, no. It’s just...”
The girl picked up a piece of bread.
She examined it.
Then took a small bite.
Her expression changed.
”Oh.”
Irena waited.
The girl chewed.
Swallowed.
Then stared down at the bread again.
Irena slowly folded her arms.
”Is there a problem?”
The girl looked toward her.
”It’s actually bread.”
There was a silence.
Irena glanced toward the tray.
Then back at the patient.
”Yes.”
”Like, actual bread.”
”That is what we generally serve here.”
The girl looked down.
For a moment, she appeared almost embarrassed.
Then she laughed weakly.
”Sorry.”
Irena’s expression softened.
”Don’t apologize.”
The patient hesitated.
Then asked:
”Can you feel it?”
Irena blinked.
”The bread?”
”No. I mean...”
The girl looked toward her own hands.
”Everything.”
Irena studied her.
She had heard variations of this question several times since the previous day.
Newly arrived personnel asking whether people could feel pain.
Whether they needed sleep.
Whether they remembered their childhoods.
Whether injuries really hurt.
Whether a person who died would remain dead.
The medical department had received so many peculiar questions that one nurse had begun maintaining a small notebook of unfamiliar expressions.
Irena knew the earthquake had affected the newcomers.
She knew the shared headaches had caused severe distress.
And she knew several of the Keelborn were experiencing profound confusion after their physical appearances changed.
But this was something more.
The girl looked frightened.
Not merely curious.
Irena pulled a chair closer to the bed.
”What’s your name?”
The girl blinked.
”Emi.”
”All right, Emi.”
Irena sat.
”Tell me what you’re actually asking.”
Emi looked down at her bread.
For several seconds, she didn’t speak.
Then she whispered:
”Do you remember growing up?”
Irena remained still.
The question was strange.
But the fear behind it was unmistakable.
”Yes.”
Emi looked up.
”Really?”
”Yes.”
”What was it like?”
Irena considered that.
Then smiled faintly.
”Complicated.”
The girl blinked.
Irena continued.
”My father worked at a coastal hospital. My mother taught mathematics. We lived in a cramped apartment where the kitchen window never closed properly.”
Emi listened.
”I had an older brother who thought it was his duty to make my life miserable.”
A small smile appeared on the girl’s face.
”Really?”
”Constantly.”
”What did he do?”
”Once, he hid every pair of shoes I owned because I had borrowed his radio without asking.”
Emi laughed quietly.
Irena smiled.
”He was unbearable.”
”Where is he now?”
The medic’s expression softened.
”At a hospital in the Crown Commonwealth. We exchange letters when the postal services cooperate.”
Emi looked down at the bread.
Then up again.
”That’s...”
She stopped.
Irena waited.
Finally, the girl whispered:
”That sounds normal.”
Irena raised an eyebrow.
”It was.”
Emi stared at her for a moment.
Then her eyes began filling with tears.
Irena’s expression changed immediately.
”Hey.”
The girl shook her head.
”Sorry.”
”You haven’t done anything wrong.”
”I know.”
But she was crying now.
Quietly.
Irena leaned forward.
”Do you want me to call someone?”
Emi shook her head.
”Not yet.”
”All right.”
The medic remained seated.
She didn’t understand what the girl was going through.
Not completely.
She couldn’t imagine why somebody would be surprised that a hospital worker remembered her childhood.
But she understood that the question mattered.
So she stayed.
After a while, Emi wiped her eyes.
Irena offered a tissue.
The girl accepted it.
”Thank you.”
”You’re welcome.”
Emi looked toward her.
”You’re really nice.”
Irena smiled.
”Depends who you ask.”
The girl laughed weakly.
”Really?”
”Ask the sailors who try to leave before I finish their examinations.”
Emi smiled.
Irena stood.
”Now. Finish your breakfast.”
The destroyer looked at the tray.
Then nodded.
”Okay.”
”And if you have more questions, ask.”
Emi looked up.
”Even weird ones?”
Irena considered that.
Then smiled.
”Especially the weird ones. Apparently I’m getting plenty of practice.”
Emi laughed.
For the moment, that seemed to help.
Irena continued her rounds.
She checked the remaining patients.
Updated several treatment records.
Confirmed that the Keelborn who had awakened were recovering from their collapse injuries.
And carefully noted another problem for the medical department to address.
The new personnel weren’t merely recovering from headaches.
Many were frightened by the ordinary facts of existence.
Food.
Pain.
Memory.
The fact that a body could be injured.
The fact that the people around them possessed histories of their own.
Irena couldn’t explain why.
But she didn’t need an explanation to recognize distress.
She returned to the nurses’ station.
Opened a fresh page in her notebook.
And wrote:
Additional psychological support recommended for recently assigned personnel.
She hesitated.
Then added:
Avoid dismissing unfamiliar questions. Patients appear genuinely frightened.
For a moment, she looked toward the ward.
Emi was eating her bread.
A nurse had stopped beside her bed.
The two were talking.
Emi smiled at something the nurse said.
Irena watched.
Then returned to work.
The world was strange enough.
There was no reason to make it lonelier.
The afternoon brought a temporary improvement to Horizon Atoll’s electrical distribution.
Not the whole station.
Not even most of it.
Only the communications annex and one section of the adjacent administrative buildings.
But the improvement was sufficient to make the local radio operators cheer.
Dain had discovered the misidentified feeder.
Hana had helped document the actual connections.
Tali and the electrical technicians had tested the repaired section.
Then, after confirming the load requirements and checking the protective equipment, they had energized the circuit.
The lights came on.
The ventilation system started.
A formerly unreliable radio repeater returned to service.
And the old communications building stopped requiring a portable generator every time the main supply voltage fluctuated.
A radio operator immediately reported the change to Harbor Control.
”Horizon Control, Communications Annex. Auxiliary distribution restored to partial service. Repeater Two is back online.”
The answer came through a speaker on the wall.
”Copy, Communications Annex. Signal is clear.”
Another operator leaned toward the microphone.
”Thank goodness.”
A third laughed.
Someone applauded.
Dain stood near the distribution board, looking deeply satisfied.
Hana was checking the final test records.
Tali monitored the electrical panel.
The repair was complete enough to return the section to limited use.
They had not restored the entire distribution grid.
Several damaged circuits remained isolated.
The backup generator network still required attention.
And the industrial district continued operating under load restrictions.
But a little more of Horizon Atoll worked.
Dain looked toward the new breaker.
Then toward the maintenance report.
”That’s another one.”
Hana smiled.
”Another one.”
Tali looked at the instrument readings.
”Voltage stable.”
”Good.”
”Load within permitted limits.”
”Better.”
”Temperature normal.”
Dain nodded.
”Excellent.”
A technician appeared in the doorway.
”Engineer!”
Dain turned.
”What?”
”The communications people are asking if they can run the additional equipment now.”
He considered that.
Then looked toward the approved load schedule.
”No.”
The technician blinked.
”Sir?”
”Not until we finish the final distribution checks.”
”But they said—”
”They can wait.”
The technician sighed.
”Understood.”
He disappeared.
Hana smiled faintly.
Dain looked at her.
”What?”
”Nothing.”
”You’re smiling.”
”Just appreciating the fact that somebody else is willing to say no when equipment isn’t ready.”
Dain laughed.
”That’s half the job.”
”Apparently.”
Tali turned from the panel.
”More than half, sometimes.”
Dain nodded.
”Quite.”
The three returned to their documentation.
Across the station, the repaired electrical section was already changing small things.
The communications operators no longer needed to worry about the portable generator cutting out during an important transmission.
Several administrative offices could use their lighting and ventilation simultaneously.
And the restored repeater improved local radio reliability around the harbor district.
None of it made Horizon Atoll a fully functioning fortress.
But it made everyday work slightly easier.
And when a place had been struggling for years, small improvements were worth celebrating.
The people who had maintained the station before the Crisis knew that better than anyone.
They had spent too many years watching equipment fail because replacement parts never arrived.
Now the parts were coming.
The old systems were responding.
And the newcomers were beginning to help.
Strange vocabulary and all.
By evening, the administrative building had become crowded with transfer applications.
Senko’s original posting was being finalized.
Breakwater’s provisional attachment request had been submitted.
Calla and June’s transfer applications were awaiting release authorization from their previous assignments.
Elsa’s request required additional review because her heavy cruiser registration remained tied to an existing operational group.
Nadya’s paperwork had become complicated by the fact that two different administrative records disagreed about her most recent assignment.
She had responded by suggesting that the records settle their differences in a duel.
Corwin Hale had not appreciated the suggestion.
Kade had.
Unfortunately, he had appreciated it within the chief’s hearing.
”Commander.”
Kade looked up.
”Yes?”
Mara pointed toward Nadya’s paperwork.
”No.”
He blinked.
”I didn’t say anything.”
”You were about to.”
”Terrible accusation.”
She raised an eyebrow.
Kade sighed.
”Fine.”
Corwin continued reviewing the transfer documents.
Nadya sat across from him, looking mildly offended.
”I still think a duel would be faster.”
Hale didn’t look up.
”Absolutely not.”
”Paper swords?”
”No.”
”Blunt ones?”
”No.”
”A very stern staring contest?”
Hale slowly raised his head.
Nadya smiled.
He stared at her.
She stared back.
A long silence followed.
Then Hale sighed.
”Please stop helping.”
Kade closed his eyes.
His shoulders shook.
Chief Fenwick looked toward him.
”Commander.”
He raised one hand.
”Sorry.”
”You don’t look sorry.”
”Tragic medical condition.”
Nadya grinned.
Even Corwin smiled despite himself.
The paperwork continued.
There were no instant confirmations.
No magical menus that resolved the process.
The station staff had to verify the records, communicate with the existing commands, and make sure Horizon could support the additional personnel.
For the time being, the visiting Keelborn remained attached to their existing assignments while receiving local maintenance, accommodation, and operational support.
Senko’s transfer was the simplest.
Her original posting had already been intended for Horizon.
The supporting authorization existed.
The destination was correct.
Only the disrupted arrival process and updated medical records required additional attention.
When Corwin finished checking the documents, he looked toward her.
”Miss Senko.”
She immediately straightened.
”Yes?”
”Your station assignment is approved for local registration.”
Her eyes widened.
”Really?”
”Yes.”
”Officially?”
”Officially.”
She stared at him.
Then at the document.
Then back.
”Can I have a copy?”
Corwin smiled.
”Of course.”
”Two copies?”
He raised an eyebrow.
”Two?”
”One for my records and one in case the first one gets wet.”
Kade looked toward her.
”Practical.”
Senko nodded enthusiastically.
”Exactly!”
Corwin sighed.
Then prepared two copies.
Senko accepted them with both hands.
For a moment, she simply looked down at the paperwork.
HORIZON ATOLL NAVAL STATION.
Her name.
Her class.
Her assigned role.
Her new homeport.
She smiled.
Then looked toward Kade.
”Commander?”
He glanced up.
”Hm?”
”Does this mean I can start planning the next supply run?”
The room became very quiet.
Hana, who had been standing beside the equipment inventories, slowly turned.
Chief Fenwick closed her eyes.
Corwin lowered his pen.
Kade stared at Senko.
She smiled brightly.
He considered the damaged cargo support.
The medical report.
The limited fuel reserves.
The amount of work already waiting in the maintenance yard.
Then sighed.
”Senko.”
”Yes?”
”Your rigging is currently held together by a repair brace and the good intentions of our engineering department.”
She blinked.
He continued.
”Let’s get you repaired before we start discussing another voyage.”
Her smile faltered.
”...Right.”
”And medically cleared.”
”Yes.”
”And properly fueled.”
”Yes.”
”And give the logistics department enough time to figure out what we actually need next.”
She considered that.
Then nodded.
”That’s fair.”
Kade smiled faintly.
”Excellent.”
Senko looked toward the documents again.
Then back at him.
”Can I make a list?”
He raised an eyebrow.
”A list?”
”Of supplies we might need.”
Kade considered the question.
Then looked toward Hana.
The repair girl smiled.
Far too enthusiastically.
He sighed.
”Of course you can.”
Senko beamed.
”Thank you!”
Hana immediately approached.
”I have a list too.”
Kade slowly closed his eyes.
”Naturally.”
”And we should compare them,” Hana continued.
Senko nodded.
”Absolutely.”
”Then check the station inventory.”
”Yes!”
”And figure out which suppliers could provide the necessary materials.”
”Exactly!”
The two young women began talking with the increasing intensity of people who had discovered a shared enthusiasm.
Kade watched them.
Then looked toward Chief Fenwick.
”Chief.”
”Yes, Commander?”
”Is there a limit to how much paperwork two determined women can generate?”
Mara considered Hana and Senko.
Then smiled sympathetically.
”No, Commander.”
He sighed.
”Thought so.”
Corwin laughed.
For the moment, the transfer office sounded less like a military bureaucracy and more like the beginning of an extremely enthusiastic engineering club.
Which, considering Horizon Atoll’s condition, might not have been a bad thing.
Not every adjustment to the station’s new population was quite so cheerful.
The trouble at Warehouse Two began with a perfectly ordinary request.
A dockside supervisor wanted additional hands to move several heavy crates out of the western loading area before the night shift began.
The cranes were busy.
The wheeled transport platforms were already assigned elsewhere.
And a shipment of replacement motor assemblies needed to be moved into covered storage before the evening weather changed.
There were available personnel nearby.
Several newly arrived Keelborn were helping organize supplies.
A group of SIA Dolls had completed an inspection of the warehouse security system.
From the supervisor’s perspective, the solution was obvious.
He pointed toward the nearest synthetic infantry unit.
”You. Get the other girls and shift those crates into Storage Bay Four.”
The SIA Doll looked up.
She had short black hair, pale gray eyes, and a dark service uniform marked with the insignia of the station’s auxiliary security detachment.
Her name was Mira.
She glanced toward the crates.
Then toward the supervisor.
”Sir, we’re assigned to a security inspection.”
”Inspection’s finished, isn’t it?”
”The external perimeter inspection is complete. The interior inspection is still pending.”
The supervisor waved one hand.
”That can wait.”
Mira hesitated.
The man looked impatient.
”What?”
”We were ordered to complete the inspection before the evening watch.”
”Well, I’m ordering you to move the crates.”
Mira lowered her eyes.
There was nothing unusual about the exchange from the supervisor’s perspective.
Horizon Atoll had always depended on reassignment of limited personnel.
SIA Dolls were military assets.
They were expected to perform whatever lawful support duties their supervisors required.
The warehouse had a problem.
He was trying to solve it.
He did not consider himself cruel.
He wasn’t shouting.
He wasn’t threatening punishment.
He was simply accustomed to treating synthetic labor as an available resource.
Mira looked toward the other Dolls.
Then back.
”Understood.”
She moved toward the crates.
A voice called from behind her.
”Hang on.”
The supervisor turned.
Kade stood beside the warehouse entrance, carrying a folder and looking toward the stacked motor assemblies.
Chief Fenwick was a few steps behind him.
The supervisor straightened.
”Commander.”
Kade nodded.
”Afternoon.”
”Sir.”
Kade glanced toward the crates.
”Those going to Bay Four?”
”Yes, sir.”
”What’s the problem?”
”Transport platforms are occupied. I was arranging a manual transfer.”
Kade looked toward the crates.
They were large.
Heavy.
Several bore handling instructions requiring mechanical lifting equipment.
He raised an eyebrow.
”Manual?”
The supervisor nodded.
”We have the synthetic units available.”
Kade looked toward Mira.
Then the other Dolls.
Then back at the crates.
”Do you?”
The supervisor blinked.
”Sir?”
”Have them available.”
He gestured toward Mira.
”She’s on security duty.”
The man looked toward her.
Then back at Kade.
”That’s correct, Commander, but the inspection can be delayed.”
Kade nodded.
”Possibly.”
The supervisor relaxed.
Then Kade continued.
”Why not wait for the transport platform?”
The man hesitated.
”Because the shipment needs to be moved.”
”Before what time?”
”Evening.”
Kade looked toward the sky.
There were several hours of daylight remaining.
He glanced at the crates.
”Are they weatherproof?”
”Sealed, sir.”
”Then we’re not about to lose them if they sit here another thirty minutes.”
The supervisor considered that.
”No, sir.”
Kade looked toward Mira.
”How long to finish your inspection?”
She blinked.
Then answered.
”Approximately forty minutes, Commander.”
”Good.”
He looked back at the supervisor.
”Let them finish. Then ask if they’re available for support. And use proper lifting equipment for anything marked as requiring it.”
The supervisor looked toward the crate labels.
For the first time, he seemed to notice the handling instructions.
He frowned.
”Right.”
Kade nodded.
”Excellent.”
The man hesitated.
Then saluted.
”Understood, Commander.”
Kade returned the gesture.
The supervisor began looking for another transport platform.
Mira remained still.
Kade glanced toward her.
”Something wrong?”
She shook her head.
”No, Commander.”
”Good.”
He nodded toward the warehouse.
”Go finish your inspection.”
”Yes, sir.”
She hesitated.
Then added:
”Thank you.”
Kade looked toward her.
He considered the situation.
Then shrugged.
”Seemed like a waste to interrupt one job just to make another one more difficult.”
Mira’s expression softened.
”Yes, Commander.”
He nodded.
Then continued toward the harbor with Chief Fenwick.
After they had gone, Mira stood beside the warehouse for another moment.
One of the other Dolls approached.
”What happened?”
Mira looked toward the crates.
Then toward the inspection route.
”The Commander told us to finish our assignment.”
Her companion blinked.
”That’s unusual.”
Mira considered that.
Then nodded.
”A little.”
They returned to work.
The warehouse supervisor eventually found a suitable lifting platform.
The crates were moved without damage.
The security inspection was completed.
And, by evening, nobody remembered the incident as anything particularly dramatic.
Except Mira.
She remembered it.
Because she was a person.
And small things had a way of staying with people.
Chief Fenwick waited until they were outside the warehouse district before speaking.
”Commander.”
Kade glanced toward her.
”Hm?”
”May I ask something?”
”Apparently everyone can.”
She smiled faintly.
”Why did you intervene?”
He looked toward the loading yard.
”The crates?”
”Yes.”
He considered the question.
”Because I didn’t want someone injuring herself carrying equipment we have machinery to move.”
Mara nodded.
”Reasonable.”
”And because the Dolls were already doing another job.”
”Yes.”
He glanced toward her.
”Was there something else?”
The chief hesitated.
Then answered.
”Some officers would simply have reassigned the units.”
Kade looked toward the warehouse.
”I noticed.”
”It’s permitted.”
”Also noticed.”
She studied him.
”You’re not accustomed to using synthetic personnel?”
He considered that.
Tali had spent the morning helping restore the electrical distribution system.
Mira was completing the warehouse inspection.
Several other Dolls had been assisting with medical support, security, transport, and repair work.
All of them had names.
All of them had opinions.
Some were cheerful.
Some were quiet.
Some were apparently just as capable of avoiding maintenance paperwork as the human sailors.
And the legal framework classified them as assets.
Kade looked toward Mara.
”I’d rather use the right people for the right jobs.”
She nodded.
”That’s sensible.”
”And I’d rather not hurt somebody because I was too impatient to wait for a forklift.”
Mara smiled.
”Also sensible.”
He glanced toward the harbor.
Then added:
”Besides, the warehouse supervisor looked like he needed an excuse to read the handling instructions.”
Mara laughed.
”He did.”
They continued walking.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Mara looked toward the damaged industrial buildings.
”Some people will find your approach unusual.”
Kade raised an eyebrow.
”Only some?”
She smiled.
”Perhaps quite a few.”
”Good. I was beginning to worry.”
She laughed quietly.
Then her expression became more thoughtful.
”The Keelborn and the Dolls are still registered under the existing legal system.”
He nodded.
”Yes.”
”You’re aware of what that means?”
”More than I’d like.”
Mara studied him.
He wasn’t smiling anymore.
For a moment, she wondered whether she had asked something too personal again.
Then Kade glanced toward the old seawall.
”We’ve got people who can operate as battleships, cruisers, destroyers, and synthetic infantry.”
”Yes.”
”That’s a tremendous amount of capability.”
”Certainly.”
He looked toward her.
”Be a shame to squander it by treating them badly.”
Mara considered that.
Then nodded slowly.
”Yes.”
It was a practical answer.
But she suspected it wasn’t the entire answer.
That was becoming another familiar quality of Horizon Atoll’s new Commander.
He rarely explained more about himself than he needed to.
Sometimes she thought he was avoiding questions.
Other times, he seemed perfectly happy to discuss something as mundane as the correct placement of warehouse labels for twenty minutes.
He was strange.
A great many newcomers were strange.
But Mara had spent enough of her life around soldiers to know that being strange was not necessarily a problem.
Sometimes it was merely another thing people had to learn about one another.
She glanced toward Kade.
”Commander?”
He looked up.
”Yes?”
”You have an unusual way of speaking.”
He considered that.
”Tragic.”
She smiled.
”For example.”
”Ah.”
”And some of the younger personnel keep using terms I don’t recognize.”
Kade’s expression remained neutral.
”Really?”
”Yes.”
”Such as?”
Mara looked toward him.
”Players.”
He was quiet.
She continued.
”Spawns. Character builds. Respawns. Something about servers.”
Kade nodded slowly.
”Right.”
”I’ve even heard older officers using those expressions.”
”Have you?”
”An Admiral on the regional communications circuit asked yesterday whether his player group had reached the correct assignment.”
Kade considered that.
”Interesting.”
”Is it new slang?”
He looked toward her.
The question was sincere.
She wasn’t asking whether her entire life had been part of a computer program.
She wasn’t asking whether the station’s memories were artificially constructed.
She wanted to understand the people arriving at her workplace.
Kade considered telling her something.
A small part.
Enough to explain the language.
Then he thought of the young destroyer who had asked Irena whether food was real.
The bewildered personnel in the infirmary.
The reaction of people discovering that their injuries now had consequences beyond an inconvenience on a screen.
And Mara herself.
Eleven years at Horizon.
A husband who had died six years ago.
An entire life built around places, people, and memories she had every reason to regard as real.
Because they were.
Kade looked toward her.
”Something like that.”
Mara raised an eyebrow.
”Something like slang?”
He nodded.
”People from different backgrounds are trying to explain things they don’t understand.”
She considered that.
”Well.”
He waited.
”That much is obvious.”
Kade smiled faintly.
”Yes.”
Mara looked toward the harbor.
”Do you think they’ll settle down?”
Kade considered the question.
The players had been inside this world for less than two days since the Crisis.
Some had already died.
Others were discovering that their bodies, equipment, and surroundings no longer obeyed the assumptions they’d brought with them.
The world wasn’t waiting for them.
He looked back at Mara.
”Eventually.”
She nodded.
”Good.”
Then she sighed.
”Because if I hear someone ask where the quest board is one more time, I may start charging an administrative fee.”
Kade laughed.
”That might actually work.”
”Do you think?”
”People become very thoughtful when you mention fees.”
Mara smiled.
”Excellent.”
They continued toward the command building.
Behind them, the warehouse district remained busy.
A cargo platform rolled past carrying the crates that had caused the earlier disagreement.
The SIA Dolls completed their inspection.
The loading supervisor signed the appropriate records.
And Horizon Atoll went on with the ordinary business of surviving another afternoon.
By the time the sun began setting, Horizon Atoll had accomplished four things that would have seemed almost embarrassingly modest at a major naval fortress.
Pump Station Four was operating under restricted load.
The communications annex had a restored electrical feeder.
A section of the northeastern barracks was receiving more reliable water pressure.
And the western cargo district had finally established an inventory system that could identify its newly delivered machinery without requiring three people to search through six contradictory manifests.
Hana regarded this as an excellent day.
Dain Okoro regarded it as a promising day.
Corwin Hale regarded it as a day in which several outstanding administrative problems had become less outstanding.
Chief Fenwick regarded it as evidence that Horizon Atoll might finally be developing the strange condition known as progress.
Kade Bher regarded it as a beginning.
An expensive beginning.
An exhausting beginning.
A beginning that had already generated enough additional paperwork to occupy several clerks well into the following week.
But a beginning nonetheless.
The operations room was quiet when he returned.
The main tactical map displayed the station in muted blue and gray.
A handful of facilities now glowed green.
Most remained amber or inactive.
The western loading pier was operational under restrictions.
The primary drydock remained closed.
The main industrial power network still required extensive repairs.
The old runway was unusable for regular aviation operations.
The coastal defense grid remained incomplete.
The station possessed more naval equipment than it had possessed three days earlier, but supporting that equipment was already placing pressure on its limited facilities.
Kade stood before the map with his arms folded.
”Well.”
Chief Fenwick looked up from her desk.
”Commander?”
”Would you describe our current situation as improving?”
Mara considered the question.
Then looked toward the map.
”Yes.”
He nodded.
”Good.”
”Slowly.”
”Of course.”
”And unevenly.”
”Naturally.”
”And we’re still waiting on several essential deliveries.”
”Expected.”
She smiled.
”But improving.”
Kade looked toward the green markers.
”Then I’ll take it.”
The radio on the communications desk crackled.
”Horizon Command, this is Harbor Control. Breakwater reports completion of the initial fuel transfer. Engineering confirms the ship can maintain essential services and has a safer operating reserve than on arrival.”
Chief Fenwick raised the handset.
”Harbor Control, acknowledged. Any problems with the transfer?”
”None beyond expected limitations. The fueling crew is preparing the final inspection report.”
”Good. Thank them for their work.”
”Will do, Chief.”
The transmission ended.
Kade glanced toward the harbor.
The enormous Tennessee-class battleship rested beyond the western piers, its upper decks illuminated by rows of working lights.
A few men moved around the damaged anti-aircraft gallery.
Others stood near the rails, looking toward the island.
The ship wasn’t repaired.
Not completely.
Its fuel reserves remained below what a fully supplied battleship would require for extended operations.
Its ammunition expenditure still needed replenishment.
And several injured sailors remained under medical care.
But Breakwater was no longer in immediate danger of exhausting its fuel merely by remaining in the anchorage.
Kade smiled faintly.
”Good.”
Mara nodded.
”Very.”
He looked toward the transfer files.
”Any news on the attachments?”
Chief Fenwick consulted the latest communications.
”Captain Mercer’s provisional homeport request has been accepted for review. Breakwater remains attached to Horizon under temporary support arrangements.”
”All right.”
”Calla and June’s transfer applications have been received by their former command.”
”Good.”
”Elsa’s requires additional administrative clearance.”
”Expected.”
”Nadya’s records have been corrected. Her request is being processed.”
Kade raised an eyebrow.
”No duel?”
Mara looked offended.
”Commander.”
”What?”
”We are a professional military administration.”
”That’s what the brochure says.”
She sighed.
He smiled.
”And Senko?”
Chief Fenwick’s expression softened.
”Local assignment completed.”
Kade nodded.
”Good.”
Senko Maru.
Horizon Atoll’s first genuinely useful auxiliary supply Keelborn.
Not simply a visiting transport.
Not merely a cargo delivery.
Someone who had chosen the base before the Crisis, finally reached it afterward, and immediately begun discussing future supply routes despite the fact that her own damaged equipment needed considerable attention.
Kade glanced toward the maintenance district.
He suspected Hana and Senko were still comparing inventories.
That suspicion was confirmed approximately three seconds later when an administrative clerk appeared in the doorway carrying another folder.
”Commander?”
Kade turned.
”Yes?”
”Repair Department sent an additional materials request.”
He stared.
The clerk held up the folder.
”It’s rather long.”
Kade slowly closed his eyes.
Chief Fenwick covered her mouth.
The clerk looked worried.
”Sir?”
Kade opened his eyes again.
”Does it have Hana’s name on it?”
The clerk checked.
”Yes.”
”Senko’s?”
She examined another page.
”...Also yes.”
Kade nodded.
”Of course.”
He held out his hand.
The clerk gave him the folder.
He opened it.
Read the first page.
Then the second.
Then looked toward the chief.
”Mara.”
She blinked.
He rarely used her first name.
”Yes?”
”I believe we’re going to need a second filing cabinet.”
The chief laughed.
Kade looked toward the folder.
Then sighed.
”Possibly a warehouse.”
The clerk smiled.
For a moment, the operations room filled with the comfortable sound of people who were beginning to know one another well enough to find the same things ridiculous.
Then the harbor bell rang outside.
Evening watch.
Chief Fenwick checked the clock.
”Commander, you’ve been working most of the day.”
”So have you.”
”True.”
”And half the station.”
”Also true.”
Kade closed the folder.
”Then perhaps everybody should stop.”
Mara raised an eyebrow.
”Everybody?”
”Everyone who isn’t required for essential watch or maintenance duties.”
She nodded thoughtfully.
”We can stagger the shifts.”
”Good.”
”And the emergency repairs?”
”Continue only where necessary and safe.”
”Understood.”
Kade looked toward the station map.
The green markers remained.
The gray ones did too.
He considered the enormous amount of work still waiting.
Then looked back at Mara.
”None of this is going to disappear overnight.”
She smiled.
”No.”
”Then there’s no point exhausting everyone today and discovering tomorrow that nobody can hold a wrench.”
”An excellent observation.”
Kade nodded.
”Occasionally I have those.”
”Rarely?”
”Extremely.”
Mara laughed.
Then began issuing the updated shift instructions.
Senko received the news that she was officially assigned to Horizon Atoll while sitting on a maintenance platform beside Hana.
She had been waiting for confirmation all day.
Now she had the completed paperwork in her hands.
Two copies.
Both properly stamped.
Both protected inside waterproof sleeves.
She had checked them three times.
Hana watched with amusement.
”Still correct?”
Senko nodded.
”Yes.”
”Good.”
”Definitely correct.”
”Excellent.”
Senko looked down again.
”Horizon Atoll.”
Hana smiled.
”Yes.”
She traced the printed name with one finger.
Then looked toward the harbor.
The station wasn’t particularly beautiful up close.
The repair yard smelled of oil.
Several cranes needed maintenance.
The large drydock was inactive.
The barracks were old.
And half the road between the warehouse district and the administrative buildings seemed to possess potholes that had developed historical significance.
But the sunset was beautiful.
The lagoon glowed gold.
Warm lights shone beneath the old gantries.
A supply trolley rattled toward the warehouses carrying crates she had delivered.
And somewhere nearby, a group of destroyer girls were laughing about a training exercise.
Senko looked toward Hana.
”Do you think we’ll actually get it working?”
Hana followed her gaze.
”The base?”
Senko nodded.
The repair girl considered the question.
Then looked toward the enormous primary drydock.
”Not quickly.”
”I know.”
”And not without a lot more materials.”
”Yes.”
”And the power system needs major work.”
”Definitely.”
”And we’ll need more technicians.”
Senko nodded.
Hana glanced toward her.
”You’re smiling.”
Senko smiled wider.
”I know.”
”Why?”
”Because all those problems have solutions.”
Hana considered that.
Then smiled.
”Some of them.”
Senko nodded.
”Some of them.”
For a while, they watched the harbor.
Then Senko looked down at the transfer papers again.
Her expression softened.
”I was supposed to be here from the start.”
Hana nodded.
”I know.”
”I kept thinking I’d missed my chance.”
”Why?”
Senko hesitated.
She touched her Ship Pendant.
”The earthquake.”
Hana looked toward her.
Senko continued.
”Everything changed. I couldn’t find the logout button. I couldn’t contact anybody from home. Then I woke up looking like myself again.”
She swallowed.
”For a while, I didn’t know what I was supposed to do.”
Hana remained quiet.
Senko looked toward the cargo cranes.
”Then I saw the supply request.”
A small smile appeared.
”And I thought, well, I can do that.”
Hana smiled faintly.
”You certainly could.”
Senko laughed.
”Apparently.”
She looked toward her damaged rigging.
The starboard cargo support remained secured in the maintenance frame.
Repairs were underway, but the equipment would not be ready for another voyage immediately.
Senko considered it.
Then looked toward Hana.
”How long?”
Hana raised an eyebrow.
”Until what?”
”The support.”
”Long enough that you should stop asking.”
Senko groaned.
”Hana.”
”Senko.”
”Just an estimate.”
”We’re still checking the structural damage.”
”So...”
Hana smiled sweetly.
”No.”
Senko sighed.
”You’re cruel.”
”Professionally.”
They laughed.
A few minutes later, Tali arrived carrying an updated component list.
She looked toward the two Keelborn.
”Am I interrupting?”
Hana shook her head.
”No.”
Senko smiled.
”Come sit.”
Tali hesitated.
She had come to deliver the report.
Sitting wasn’t required.
But there was room on the platform.
The evening was pleasant.
And her work assignment was nearly finished.
She sat.
Hana opened the report.
Senko leaned closer.
The three began discussing the replacement parts.
There were several components Horizon already possessed.
Others could be refurbished.
A few would need to be ordered.
Some damage required more thorough inspection before any repair schedule could be approved.
They discussed all of it.
Not as an abstract list of upgrades waiting to be unlocked.
As actual work.
Work they could do together.
And, for the first time since arriving at the staging port, Senko began feeling that she was precisely where she belonged.
Captain Mercer spent his evening aboard Breakwater.
He stood on the bridge wing with a mug of coffee, watching Horizon Atoll’s harbor lights reflect across the lagoon.
The ship was quiet by battleship standards.
Not silent.
Never silent.
Machinery hummed below.
Ventilation equipment continued running.
Sailors moved between compartments.
The engineering department maintained its watches.
Security personnel patrolled the decks.
The damage-control teams had completed their inspections for the evening, and the wounded sailors were receiving proper medical attention.
But the immediate danger had passed.
The Blackwake aircraft were gone.
The heavy cruiser lay broken somewhere beneath the Pacific.
And Breakwater’s anchors held securely inside a defended harbor.
Mercer considered the sight.
It was almost enough to make him forget that two days earlier, he’d been sitting at home waiting to play a naval VRMMORPG.
Almost.
His executive officer stepped onto the bridge wing.
”Captain.”
Mercer glanced over.
”Cole.”
”Engineering report.”
Mercer sighed.
”Please tell me it contains good news.”
”Some.”
”Wonderful.”
Cole handed him the folder.
”Initial fuel transfer completed. Propulsion machinery remains operational. Damage-control repairs are progressing.”
”Good.”
”Starboard anti-aircraft gallery requires replacement equipment.”
”Expected.”
”Medical confirms the injured men are recovering.”
Mercer nodded.
”Very good.”
”And the crew accommodation survey is complete.”
He looked up.
”Any problems?”
Cole hesitated.
Mercer narrowed his eyes.
”Adrian.”
”Some of the men are unhappy with the showers.”
The captain stared.
A long silence followed.
Then he slowly looked toward the dark water.
”Of course.”
Cole smiled faintly.
”They work.”
”Excellent.”
”But several want more hot water.”
Mercer closed his eyes.
”Naturally.”
He remembered the aircraft.
The gunfire.
The shell splashes.
The enormous Blackwake heavy cruiser coming toward the supply transport.
He remembered the terrible certainty that one mistake might kill men who had expected to spend the day enjoying a game.
Now those same men were complaining about hot water.
He laughed.
A short, helpless sound.
Cole raised an eyebrow.
”Captain?”
Mercer shook his head.
”Nothing.”
He looked toward the harbor.
”Tell them we’ll see what we can do.”
Cole nodded.
”Understood.”
Then he hesitated.
”Captain?”
”Hm?”
”Do you think we made the right decision?”
Mercer looked toward him.
”About Horizon?”
Cole nodded.
The captain considered the island.
Its old drydock.
The damaged cranes.
The warehouses.
The half-restored piers.
The Keelborn helping unload cargo.
The station personnel who had worked through the night to receive a convoy they hadn’t expected.
And the eighteen-year-old Commander who had greeted him by asking whether his crew was safe before discussing the transfer arrangements.
Mercer smiled faintly.
”I think we’ve found a place worth giving a chance.”
Cole nodded slowly.
”Yeah.”
He looked toward the harbor.
”Me too.”
They stood together for a while.
Then Cole glanced toward the forward turrets.
”Captain?”
”Yes?”
”Somebody in Gunnery wants to know whether we can schedule more target practice.”
Mercer slowly turned.
Cole maintained a perfectly straight face.
”Apparently they want to improve their grouping.”
The captain stared.
Then sighed.
”Tell them we’re not firing twelve fourteen-inch guns in the middle of the harbor.”
Cole grinned.
”Already did.”
”And?”
”They asked whether the Commander might approve an exception.”
Mercer looked toward the island.
Then back at his executive officer.
A slow smile appeared.
”Tell them to ask him.”
Cole blinked.
”Really?”
”Absolutely.”
The executive officer laughed.
”You’re terrible.”
”Naturally.”
Mercer took another sip of coffee.
Then smiled toward the dark water.
It was good to have something ridiculous to complain about again.
Later that night, Mara Fenwick stood outside the administrative building, looking toward the harbor.
The air was warm.
The sky was clear.
The stars above Horizon Atoll shone with an intensity rarely seen above the larger fortress cities.
Beyond the seawall, the Pacific stretched into darkness.
A few ships moved within the protected approaches.
Most were anchored.
The enormous Breakwater rested near the deep-water fueling berth.
The visiting Keelborn had been assigned temporary accommodations while their transfer requests proceeded.
Senko’s cargo equipment remained in the repair yard.
The station’s workshops were quieter now.
The electrical grid carried a slightly more reliable load.
The water-processing system had recovered some of its capacity.
And Beacon Three continued sweeping the western channel.
Mara watched the light.
She remembered when it had gone out.
She remembered the maintenance request.
The denied replacement parts.
The decision to postpone repairs.
She remembered walking past the dark approach chart for months, wishing somebody would finally give the station enough resources to make the necessary repairs.
Then an eighteen-year-old Commander had arrived.
A Commander who occasionally behaved like a sarcastic child.
Who asked unusual questions.
Who seemed strangely surprised by ordinary things.
Who referred to other newcomers as players and then looked uncomfortable when anyone asked what that meant.
And who had spent his first afternoon helping repair a navigation beacon.
Mara smiled faintly.
The door opened behind her.
Kade stepped outside carrying a cup of tea.
He looked toward the harbor.
Then toward her.
”Chief.”
”Commander.”
”Still here?”
”Apparently.”
He smiled.
”Terrible habit.”
”Quite.”
He leaned against the railing.
For a while, neither spoke.
The night was pleasant.
Warm wind moved through the palms.
A vehicle passed along the harbor road.
Somewhere in the distance, sailors were laughing.
Mara looked toward the administrative building.
Then toward Kade.
”Can I tell you something?”
He glanced over.
”Go ahead.”
She considered the words.
Then spoke.
”When I first heard we’d been assigned another Commander, I wasn’t particularly optimistic.”
Kade nodded.
”Reasonable.”
”We’ve had several.”
”So I’ve heard.”
”Most didn’t stay.”
”Also heard.”
She smiled faintly.
”One wanted to move the drydock.”
Kade slowly closed his eyes.
”Still my favorite.”
Mara laughed.
Then her expression softened.
”I’ve spent eleven years at this station.”
He nodded.
”I know.”
”Some of the people here have been here even longer.”
”Yes.”
”They’ve worked through shortages, storms, equipment failures, and every administrative disappointment the Admiralty Union could send our way.”
Kade listened.
Mara looked toward the harbor.
”These people aren’t just names on a register.”
His expression became quieter.
She continued.
”Corwin knows which suppliers can be trusted and which ones will send us the wrong equipment. Dain knows the machinery better than most of the engineers who designed its replacements. Irena has kept this station’s medical department functioning through situations that should have overwhelmed it.”
She paused.
”Tali remembers every electrical modification in half the maintenance district. The dockworkers know which cranes are safe. The kitchen staff know how much food we can actually prepare.”
Kade nodded slowly.
Mara looked toward him.
”I suppose what I’m saying is that Horizon Atoll was never empty.”
He studied her.
She smiled faintly.
”It was neglected.”
The beacon swept across the water.
”Not empty.”
For a moment, Kade didn’t answer.
He thought of the first day.
The ruined buildings.
The cracked concrete.
The absurd station report.
The old machinery.
The lack of supplies.
He had thought of Horizon as an unwanted base.
A place nobody had claimed.
A starting location left behind because better options were unavailable.
He hadn’t considered what that description would sound like to somebody who had spent eleven years living here.
Mara Fenwick had buried her husband while serving at this station.
Dain had spent seventeen years maintaining its machinery.
Corwin had spent twenty-two years managing its supplies.
Irena had treated its wounded.
Tali and Mira had lives and memories and work they took pride in.
Horizon Atoll had not begun existing when Kade accepted the Commander assignment.
These people had already been here.
Waiting for supplies.
Repairing equipment.
Keeping the lights on.
Trying to make a difficult place worth living in.
Kade looked toward Mara.
”You’re right.”
She blinked.
He glanced toward the harbor.
”I’ve been thinking about how much the base needs rebuilding.”
”Understandable.”
”But it isn’t a blank slate.”
Mara smiled.
”No.”
He nodded slowly.
”Good thing, too.”
She looked toward him.
”Why?”
Kade gestured toward the station.
”Because if it were, I’d have absolutely no idea where to start.”
Mara laughed.
A genuine laugh.
The kind she hadn’t enjoyed nearly enough in recent years.
Kade smiled faintly.
Then looked toward the harbor again.
The lights reflected across the water.
The enormous battleship remained at anchor.
The repairs would continue tomorrow.
So would the transfer applications.
So would the difficult questions nobody knew how to answer.
The Crisis remained unexplained.
The players remained trapped.
The Blackwake remained at sea.
And the Admiralty Union still regarded many of the women protecting its coastlines as military assets.
None of that had changed.
But Horizon Atoll had changed a little.
Not because someone had arrived to save it single-handedly.
Because the people already there finally had more materials, more help, and a few additional reasons to believe their work might lead somewhere.
Kade took another sip of tea.
Then glanced toward Mara.
”Chief.”
”Yes?”
”Tomorrow, remind me to ask Corwin about the long-term supply contracts.”
She smiled.
”Of course.”
”And Dain about the industrial power network.”
”Certainly.”
”And Irena about the medical department’s staffing requirements.”
”Already on the list.”
He nodded.
”Excellent.”
Mara looked toward him.
”And what about Senko’s next supply mission?”
Kade slowly closed his eyes.
There was a long pause.
Then he sighed.
”Please tell me she’s not planning one already.”
Mara smiled sweetly.
”She and Hana have prepared a preliminary route proposal.”
Kade stared.
”Of course they have.”
”And a supply inventory.”
”Naturally.”
”And a list of possible vendors.”
He looked toward the dark repair yard.
Then back at Mara.
”Has anyone told them they’re supposed to sleep?”
”I believe they were informed.”
”Did it work?”
”Not immediately.”
Kade nodded solemnly.
”Terrifying women.”
Mara laughed again.
He looked toward the harbor.
Then sighed.
”Fine. We’ll look at the proposal tomorrow.”
She nodded.
”Very well.”
”And Chief?”
”Yes?”
”Make sure nobody approves another voyage until Senko’s rigging is actually repaired.”
Mara smiled.
”Already instructed the repair department.”
Kade looked relieved.
”Wonderful.”
For a while, they remained beside the railing.
An eighteen-year-old Commander.
A chief petty officer who had served at the station for eleven years.
Two people from impossibly different histories.
Neither fully understood the other.
One possessed memories of a world he refused to discuss.
The other possessed a lifetime that the newcomers might once have dismissed as background information.
But for the moment, they didn’t need to understand everything.
They had work to do.
People to look after.
A naval station to keep running.
And a harbor that was beginning, little by little, to resemble somewhere worth coming home to.
Mara finished her coffee.
Then looked toward Kade.
”Commander?”
”Hm?”
”Are you planning to stay?”
He glanced toward her.
The question was simple.
But it carried more weight than the words suggested.
He looked toward the old drydock.
The repaired beacon.
The warehouse lights.
Breakwater at anchor.
The maintenance yard where Senko’s equipment waited.
The barracks where the Keelborn were finally resting.
The ordinary men and women who had spent years keeping the station alive.
Kade considered the question.
Then smiled faintly.
”Well.”
He glanced toward the paperwork visible through the operations-room window.
”I’ve got a rather impressive collection of unfinished forms.”
Mara raised an eyebrow.
”Commander.”
”And the drydock still doesn’t work.”
”Yes.”
”And apparently our new battleship has developed an unhealthy relationship with the fuel depot.”
”Also yes.”
He looked toward her.
”Seems a little rude to leave before we fix any of that.”
Mara studied him.
Then smiled.
”Yes.”
She nodded slowly.
”It would.”
Kade looked toward the sea.
The beacon made another revolution.
Then he sighed.
”Besides.”
Mara glanced at him.
”Hm?”
”I’ve still got several days off.”
For a moment, the chief stared.
Then she laughed so suddenly that she nearly spilled her coffee.
Kade smiled.
The night wind moved across the railing.
And Horizon Atoll continued its slow, stubborn recovery.
Its people were still confused.
Its facilities were still broken.
Its new arrivals still spoke in strange terms that nobody understood.
Its latest transfers were not all guaranteed.
And its Commander remained a young man who seemed determined to treat military administration as an opportunity to make sarcastic observations about plumbing.
But the station had more working equipment than it possessed the previous morning.
Its newest auxiliary transport had finally reached home.
A human-crewed battleship was asking to stay.
Four more Keelborn had begun their own transfer requests.
And the people who had always lived there were beginning to discover that, whatever else the newcomers might be, some of them were willing to help.
For now, that was enough.
Tomorrow, there would be more work.
More questions.
More repairs.
And probably more paperwork.
Kade looked toward the administrative building.
Then down at his tea.
He sighed.
”Chief.”
”Yes, Commander?”
”Do we have any more of this?”
She looked at the cup.
”Tea?”
”Yes.”
”Of course.”
He smiled faintly.
”Excellent.”
Mara turned toward the building.
”Come along, then.”
Kade followed.
Behind them, Horizon Atoll’s harbor lights shone across the lagoon.
The wind moved through the palms.
The old drydock stood waiting.
And over the western approach, Beacon Three continued its quiet, faithful work.
