I. The Commander Versus the Supply Department
Kade Bher had fought monsters that could swallow entire buildings.
He had survived battlefields where the ground itself attempted to kill anything standing upon it.
He had once encountered a creature that possessed seven heads, twelve arms, and an apparently limitless enthusiasm for making everyone else’s day considerably worse.
He had punched it.
Repeatedly.
Until it stopped being enthusiastic.
And yet, on this particular morning, seated behind his desk in the administrative headquarters of Horizon Atoll, he found himself confronting an opponent that appeared entirely immune to physical violence.
A supply requisition form.
More specifically, a supply requisition form that had been returned to him because somebody had apparently forgotten to initial the third page.
Kade stared at the document.
The document stared back.
Or would have, if paper possessed eyes.
He rather suspected this particular sheet was considering developing them purely to spite him.
”Chief.”
Across the office, Mara Fenwick continued writing.
”Commander?”
”I have a question.”
”How unusual.”
”Are we absolutely certain that paperwork is necessary for civilization?”
Mara didn’t look up.
”Yes.”
”Entirely certain?”
”Yes.”
”Not even a little doubt?”
”No.”
He leaned back in his chair.
”Tragic.”
The Chief of Staff turned a page.
Kade regarded the requisition form again.
Then reached for his pen.
The morning sun streamed through the tall windows behind him, illuminating the crowded surface of his desk. Outside, Horizon Atoll continued its slow recovery beneath a brilliant Pacific sky. Repair crews worked along the western harbor, where the previous battles had left damaged platforms, battered concrete, and entire stretches of waterfront awaiting reconstruction.
A crane moved carefully above one of the maintenance piers.
Somewhere farther inland, an engine coughed to life.
Beyond the administrative district, the airfield’s service vehicles were beginning their morning inspections.
And out in the lagoon, a handful of Keelborn were already gathering near the designated training waters.
Horizon was awake.
It was busy.
It was damaged.
And it needed approximately seventeen different things before lunch.
Kade sighed.
He signed the third page.
Then held up the completed form.
”There.”
Mara glanced toward him.
”Congratulations.”
”Thank you.”
”Only fourteen more.”
He stared.
She smiled.
Kade slowly lowered the document.
”...You enjoy this.”
”Immensely.”
”You’re a terrible person.”
”An observation you’ve made several times this week.”
”And yet you refuse to improve.”
”Someone has to provide continuity around here.”
Kade snorted.
Then reached for the next folder.
Unlike the earlier requisition, this one was considerably more important.
Its cover bore the identification of Horizon Atoll’s logistics department, along with a series of annotations in Corwin Hale’s distinctive handwriting.
Some were neat.
Some were increasingly less neat.
One had been underlined three times.
PERISHABLE FOOD STORES — REPLENISHMENT REQUEST.
Kade opened the folder.
The first page contained a summary of Horizon’s current food situation.
It wasn’t catastrophic.
Not yet.
The station possessed preserved food, emergency rations, dry goods, and enough basic supplies to avoid an immediate shortage.
But there was a substantial difference between possessing enough calories to prevent starvation and maintaining a healthy military population.
Fresh vegetables were being consumed faster than they could be replaced.
Fruit was becoming scarce.
The medical department had raised concerns about dietary variety among recovering patients.
And Eliza Ward, Horizon’s cook, had apparently reached the point where the phrase another week of canned vegetables was considered a personal insult.
Kade could sympathize.
The previous cargo delivery had brought fresh food to the island.
Oranges.
Tomatoes.
Leafy vegetables.
Eggs.
Other provisions that had made the kitchens substantially more cheerful for a short while.
Unfortunately, Horizon possessed a remarkable number of people capable of eating.
And most of them had demonstrated absolutely no interest in preserving the novelty of fresh produce by consuming it slowly.
Kade turned the page.
Fresh milk products.
Eggs.
Leafy greens.
Root vegetables.
Fruit.
Chilled medical diets.
Additional food suitable for patients with restricted digestive or nutritional requirements.
He nodded slowly.
”All right.”
Mara looked up.
”Found something?”
”Food.”
”An excellent discovery.”
”Apparently, people need it.”
”So I’ve heard.”
He ignored her.
”Corwin’s been asking for a more reliable resupply arrangement.”
”He has.”
”And Eliza’s threatening to march on the quartermaster’s office.”
”She already did.”
Kade blinked.
”What?”
”Yesterday afternoon.”
”...Did she win?”
”She left with two crates of potatoes and an additional allocation of cooking oil.”
Kade considered that.
Then nodded gravely.
”Decisive victory.”
Mara smiled.
”Corwin described it differently.”
”Corwin needs to learn that some battles are unwinnable.”
The Chief of Staff set down her pen.
”Have you heard back from the distribution office?”
”Not yet.”
”Then perhaps we should find out before Eliza launches another offensive.”
Kade reached for the telephone.
”Agreed.”
He lifted the receiver.
An operator answered.
Kade requested the established supply contact responsible for Horizon’s previous fresh-food shipment.
The connection took a little time.
That was normal.
The Pacific communications network was extensive, but it was also strained by military traffic, damaged infrastructure, and the increasingly complicated task of keeping isolated installations supplied while the Blackwake occupied large portions of the surrounding ocean.
A supply request that would once have seemed entirely ordinary now had to travel through several offices, each attempting to reconcile operational needs with limited aircraft, limited fuel, and an expanding list of bases requesting assistance.
Eventually, the connection was established.
A woman’s voice came through.
”Regional Distribution Office.”
”Commander Kade Bher, Horizon Atoll.”
There was a faint rustle of paper.
”Horizon Atoll. One moment, Commander.”
Kade waited.
Mara returned to her documents.
A few seconds later, the woman spoke again.
”Yes, Commander. We received your updated requisition.”
”Excellent. Tell me you have vegetables.”
A pause.
”...Vegetables, sir?”
”Preferably the edible variety.”
Another pause.
Then the woman laughed quietly.
”We do, Commander.”
Kade closed his eyes.
”Beautiful.”
”We’re able to accommodate a portion of the requested fresh-food allocation. Your medical dietary supplies have also been approved in principle.”
He straightened.
”That’s good news.”
”However, we’ll need to coordinate transportation.”
”Naturally.”
”The distribution unit has access to an aircraft equipped for temperature-sensitive cargo. It normally handles perishable foods, medical provisions, and similar supplies for military installations.”
Kade glanced toward Mara.
She looked up.
He mouthed one word.
Aircraft.
Her eyebrows rose.
The woman continued.
”We may be able to assign Horizon to one of its upcoming distribution movements, provided the airfield can accept the aircraft and the final cargo allocation is approved.”
Kade reached for a notepad.
”All right. What do you need from us?”
”Current runway inspection certification, unloading capability, receiving personnel, cold-storage availability, and confirmation that the base can process the cargo within the required temperature limits.”
He began writing.
”Understood.”
”We’ll also need to coordinate the delivery window with your airfield operations office.”
”Fine.”
”And the perishables will have to be unloaded promptly.”
”Believe me, our kitchen staff will be waiting.”
”Good.”
Kade glanced at the requisition.
Then asked the question that had been bothering him since the woman mentioned the aircraft.
”Actually, while I have you...”
”Yes, Commander?”
”Does that aircraft have any capacity for technical cargo?”
There was a pause.
”Technical cargo?”
”Machinery. Specialized components. Nothing classified in this request, just engineering equipment we’re attempting to secure from another installation.”
The woman was silent for a moment.
Then answered carefully.
”Not through this distribution service, Commander.”
Kade looked toward the ceiling.
”...Of course.”
”Our aircraft are assigned specifically to food, medical cargo, and related distribution requirements.”
”Even if there’s unused space?”
”I’m afraid so.”
He rubbed his forehead.
”Is that a weight restriction or a departmental restriction?”
”Both may apply, depending on the cargo, but the principal issue is our service authorization. We don’t transport general engineering equipment.”
Kade glanced toward the open folder containing the Respite Bath correspondence.
”What if the equipment is intended for a medical recovery facility?”
There was a longer pause.
”Would it be medical equipment covered by our approved distribution categories?”
”Specialized restoration machinery.”
”From another depot?”
”Yes.”
”I’m sorry, Commander. That would require a separate transport arrangement.”
He sighed.
”Had to ask.”
”I understand.”
”No, really. I was hoping the answer would be something other than no.”
The woman sounded sympathetic.
”Unfortunately, we have to protect the service’s capacity for perishables and medical deliveries. If we start accepting unrelated technical freight, the next base might not receive its food or medicine.”
Kade considered that.
Then nodded.
”Fair enough.”
He meant it.
He didn’t like the answer.
But that didn’t make it unreasonable.
A transport service assigned to distribute food and medical supplies couldn’t simply begin accepting heavy industrial machinery because one Commander had a particularly persuasive argument.
The aircraft had its own loading restrictions.
Its own schedule.
Its own cargo-handling procedures.
And, more importantly, other installations depended upon it.
Kade wasn’t going to deprive another base of medicine merely to make his own logistics situation easier.
”All right,” he said. ”We’ll handle the engineering cargo separately.”
”Understood.”
”But let’s get the food moving.”
”Of course, Commander.”
They spent the next several minutes discussing the practical arrangements.
Runway conditions.
Potential scheduling windows.
Cold-chain requirements.
Receiving staff.
Documentation.
The distinction between requested quantities and those the distribution service could actually supply.
By the end of the conversation, Horizon had a provisional air-delivery arrangement.
The aircraft had not departed.
The delivery was not guaranteed until final coordination was complete.
But the distribution office had accepted the request and begun planning a perishable-food flight.
That was more than Kade had possessed yesterday.
He thanked the woman.
Then ended the call.
For several seconds, he sat quietly.
Mara watched him.
”Well?”
Kade looked at her.
”We’re getting a plane.”
Her expression brightened.
”Really?”
”Provisionally. Food and medical supplies. They’re working through the delivery schedule.”
”That’s excellent.”
”Yes.”
”And the engineering cargo?”
”No.”
Mara nodded.
”Expected.”
He stared at her.
”You could pretend to be disappointed.”
”I am disappointed.”
”Your face isn’t.”
”My face is being practical.”
”Rude.”
She smiled.
Kade placed the receiver down.
”Still. Fresh food. Medical provisions. Something that doesn’t require Sakura dragging three floating houses across the Pacific.”
Mara considered that.
”She would probably enjoy carrying the food.”
”She would.”
”Especially if she could cook for everyone afterward.”
”She’d try to feed the entire island.”
”Probably.”
Kade looked toward the window.
Somewhere far beyond the horizon, Sakura Nagase and her five escorts were preparing to continue their mission.
He hoped they were having a reasonably uneventful morning.
He also hoped Emi hadn’t eaten their emergency supplies.
Then he looked back at Mara.
”Get Corwin.”
”He’s already on his way.”
Kade blinked.
”...How?”
”I told him you were speaking with the distribution office.”
A pause.
”Chief.”
”Commander?”
”You are frighteningly efficient.”
”Thank you.”
”That wasn’t a compliment.”
”I know.”
II. An Island Cannot Eat Ammunition
Corwin Hale arrived seven minutes later carrying three folders, a clipboard, and the expression of a man who had already been informed that somebody intended to make his morning more complicated.
Behind him came Eliza Ward.
And behind Eliza came Dr. Irena Holt.
Kade regarded the procession.
Then looked toward Mara.
”Did you invite the entire supply chain?”
”Only the relevant departments.”
”Marvelous.”
Corwin placed his folders on the desk.
”Commander.”
”Corwin.”
”I understand we may be receiving an air delivery.”
”That is the idea.”
”Perishables?”
”Primarily.”
”Temperature-controlled?”
”Yes.”
”Medical cargo?”
”Also yes.”
Corwin nodded.
Then opened his clipboard.
”Very good. I’ll need the proposed manifest, aircraft handling requirements, distribution schedule, and unloading procedures.”
Kade slowly looked toward Mara.
”He’s been here less than thirty seconds.”
”Efficiency,” she answered.
Eliza stepped forward.
”Commander.”
Kade turned.
”Eliza.”
”Did you get the vegetables?”
”I got approval for some vegetables.”
She stared.
”Some?”
”Pending allocation.”
”How many?”
”We’re working on that.”
”What kinds?”
”Also working on that.”
”Fresh?”
”Yes.”
Her expression changed immediately.
”Oh, thank goodness.”
Corwin sighed.
”Please remember the allocation is not final.”
Eliza ignored him.
”Eggs?”
”Requested.”
”Fruit?”
”Requested.”
”Milk?”
”Chilled provisions are on the list.”
Eliza pressed one hand against her chest.
Kade raised an eyebrow.
”Are you all right?”
”I may cry.”
”Please don’t. Irena charges extra for emotional emergencies.”
The doctor looked at him.
”No, I don’t.”
”See? Already negotiating.”
Irena folded her arms.
”Commander.”
Kade smiled faintly.
Then became serious.
”The medical dietary supplies are approved in principle as well.”
Irena nodded.
”That’s important.”
She moved closer to the desk.
”We have several recovering patients whose nutritional needs are becoming increasingly difficult to meet with preserved stores alone. The kitchen has been doing excellent work, but there are limits to what preparation can compensate for.”
Eliza looked pleased.
”Thank you.”
”You’re welcome.”
Irena continued.
”Some patients need appropriate protein intake, adequate vitamin sources, and foods they can actually tolerate. Others are struggling with appetite after prolonged treatment.”
Kade nodded.
”What do you need?”
The doctor handed him a short list.
Not enormous.
Not extravagant.
But specific.
Certain nutritional supplements.
Fresh produce where available.
Appropriate chilled food.
Medical provisions for patients whose diets could not simply be treated as ordinary mess-hall meals.
Kade studied it.
”All right.”
Corwin leaned forward.
”Commander, we need to be careful about the aircraft’s allocated capacity.”
”I know.”
”The distribution unit may approve the food request but reduce quantities to accommodate other stations.”
”I know.”
”And we cannot assume the cold-storage facilities here can handle everything at once.”
Kade looked toward him.
”Then we check them.”
Corwin blinked.
”What?”
”The cold storage.”
”Yes, Commander. I intended to—”
”Good. Dain can get Engineering to inspect the refrigeration equipment. Eliza can help determine how much needs to be moved directly into the kitchens. Irena can identify the medical portion that requires separate handling.”
He looked around the room.
”And you can make sure nobody misplaces the manifest.”
Corwin straightened.
”Naturally.”
Kade nodded.
”Excellent.”
Mara had already begun taking notes.
”Airfield Operations will need to inspect the runway again.”
”Yes,” Kade answered. ”Last clearance doesn’t mean today’s surface is automatically suitable.”
”Engineering already has an inspection scheduled.”
”Move it up if they can do so without disrupting essential repairs.”
Mara nodded.
”I’ll coordinate.”

Kade leaned back.
For a moment, he imagined the operation.
A transport aircraft approaching the island.
Ground crews preparing the cargo apron.
A loadmaster checking the unloading sequence.
Crates moving from the aircraft into waiting vehicles.
Refrigerated containers transferred promptly.
Food distributed between the kitchens, medical department, and storage facilities.
Nothing particularly heroic.
No battleship guns.
No desperate evasive maneuvering.
No screaming over the radio.
Just an aircraft bringing food to people who needed it.
The simplicity was almost suspicious.
He glanced toward Corwin.
”One more thing.”
The quartermaster looked up.
”Yes?”
”When the aircraft arrives, I want the unloading team prepared before it lands. Not after.”
”Of course.”
”And somebody competent needs to inspect the cargo seals.”
”Naturally.”
”And if anything requiring refrigeration arrives outside its acceptable condition, it gets checked before distribution.”
Irena nodded.
”Agreed.”
Eliza looked mildly offended.
”I wasn’t going to serve spoiled food.”
”Didn’t say you were.”
”You looked at me.”
”I possess eyes. It’s a terrible burden.”
Mara made a small sound.
Kade glanced at her.
”Chief?”
”Nothing.”
”You’re laughing.”
”Certainly not.”
He looked at the four people standing before him.
For a moment, the office felt almost ordinary.
A meeting about food.
A quartermaster concerned about storage.
A cook eagerly anticipating fresh ingredients.
A doctor making sure recovering patients were fed properly.
And a Chief of Staff quietly arranging for everything to happen without the Commander personally chasing every crate across the island.
It was a good meeting.
A productive meeting.
Kade almost didn’t trust it.
Then Corwin cleared his throat.
”Commander.”
Kade looked at him.
”Yes?”
”There’s another matter.”
Of course there was.
”There always is.”
”The airfield’s refrigerated holding room has been experiencing intermittent compressor problems.”
Kade slowly closed his eyes.
Mara sighed.
Eliza stared at the ceiling.
Irena folded her arms.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Kade opened his eyes.
”...Naturally.”
Corwin nodded gravely.
”Engineering has already submitted a repair request.”
”Of course they have.”
”Unfortunately, the required replacement parts—”
”Corwin.”
”Yes, Commander?”
Kade raised one hand.
”Before you finish that sentence, I need you to understand something.”
The quartermaster blinked.
”Sir?”
”If you tell me that the refrigeration room requires a component currently sitting at Resolute Shoals, I’m going to start screaming.”
Corwin hesitated.
Then shook his head.
”No, Commander.”
Kade relaxed.
”Oh, thank goodness.”
”The necessary parts are already in Horizon’s maintenance stores.”
Silence.
Kade stared.
Mara stared.
Eliza stared.
Even Irena looked surprised.
Then Kade leaned forward.
”Corwin.”
”Sir?”
”That may be the most beautiful sentence you’ve said since I became Commander.”
The quartermaster looked faintly pleased.
”I try.”
III. The Other Battle
While Kade Bher struggled to keep an island fed, Aster was attempting to prevent several very enthusiastic Keelborn from inventing exciting new ways to injure themselves.
The morning training area had been established inside one of Horizon’s sheltered lagoon sections.
The water was calm enough for controlled exercises, but not perfectly still.
A light breeze moved across the surface, producing small ripples that glittered beneath the sun.
Temporary marker buoys outlined the designated maneuvering lanes.
A safety launch waited beyond the eastern boundary, its crew observing the girls through binoculars.
Another maintenance craft remained closer to the servicing platform, ready to assist with any equipment problem that required outside intervention.
Onshore, a portable communications station had been set beneath a canvas awning.
A medic stood nearby.
Hana Saeki was present with several technical personnel, examining the equipment status reports.
And Aster stood at the edge of the training platform with her hands on her hips.
Her dark-auburn hair had been tied back securely, the familiar red ribbons moving gently in the sea breeze.
Her Fletcher-class rigging rested on its servicing supports nearby, the physical machinery looking considerably more substantial outside the sleek profile it assumed when moving across the water.
Aster’s expression was deeply suspicious.
Not because something had gone wrong.
Not yet.
But because everything had gone suspiciously well during the preliminary briefing.
And experience had taught her that this generally meant the universe was preparing something unfortunate.
”All right!”
Her voice carried across the platform.
”Everyone listening?”
Riko Minase raised a hand.
Aster looked at her.
”Riko.”
”Yes?”
”Why is your hand up?”
”I have a question!”
”Of course you do.”
The Yamato-class girl lowered her hand.
”Are we doing the same maneuvering exercises again?”
”Some of them.”
Riko frowned.
”But we already passed those.”
Aster smiled.
”Excellent.”
Riko blinked.
”...Excellent?”
”Then you should have no difficulty passing them again.”
The battleship stared.
Yuna Mori adjusted her glasses.
”She’s trapped you rather neatly.”
Riko turned.
”Yuna!”
The carrier smiled.
”What?”
”You’re supposed to be on my side!”
”I am.”
”Then help me!”
”I believe I just did.”
Aster laughed.
Riko made a noise that suggested she was seriously considering becoming a submarine purely to escape the conversation.
Nearby, June watched with a polite expression.
Mina stood beside her, checking the fastening arrangement of her Leander-class training rigging.
Calla, who had volunteered to assist with the day’s instruction, looked toward Aster.
”Are we beginning?”
Aster straightened.
”Right.”
She turned toward the assembled girls.
The humor faded slightly.
”Today’s exercises are going to be different from the ones we were doing before.”
Riko looked interested.
June straightened.
Mina stopped adjusting her equipment.
Yuna lowered the notes she had been reviewing.
Aster continued.
”We’re not just practicing how to move around the lagoon without hitting anything.”
A pause.
”Although, apparently, some of us still need work on that.”
Riko immediately grinned.
Aster pointed at her.
”Don’t.”
”I didn’t say anything!”
”You were about to.”
”I was thinking!”
”That was the problem.”
Yuna covered her mouth.
June’s shoulders shook.
Aster sighed.
Then returned to the briefing.
”The fighting around Horizon showed us several things we need to improve.”
The girls became quiet.
The change was immediate.
Riko’s grin disappeared.
Yuna lowered her eyes slightly.
Mina stopped moving altogether.
June watched Aster with renewed attention.
They all remembered.
The attack.
The explosions.
The Blackwake.
The reports arriving afterward.
Fifteen Keelborn sunk.
Eleven Pendants recovered.
Four missing.
There was no need for Aster to repeat those numbers aloud.
They were already present in the room.
And in the minds of everyone standing there.
”We survived,” Aster said quietly.
She looked toward the lagoon.
”But surviving doesn’t mean we did everything right.”
Nobody answered.
”Some things went wrong because the enemy was stronger than we expected. Some things went wrong because we didn’t have enough information. Some happened because our equipment couldn’t do what we needed it to do.”
She turned back toward the girls.
”And some things went wrong because we weren’t ready.”
Riko swallowed.
Aster looked at her.
Not accusingly.
Not unkindly.
Simply acknowledging the truth.
”We need to change that.”
Calla stepped forward.
”The purpose of today’s exercise is controlled response under pressure.”
She indicated the chart attached to the portable board.
”Formation maintenance. Communications discipline. Emergency separation. Propulsion restrictions. Damage reporting. And the ability to respond to an unexpected contact without everyone attempting to solve the same problem at once.”
June nodded.
Mina studied the diagram.
Yuna adjusted her glasses.
Riko looked toward the water.
Aster continued.
”Nobody is being asked to perform beyond her approved equipment or medical limits. Nobody is firing live ammunition. Nobody is launching torpedoes.”
She pointed toward the training equipment.
”And nobody is going to decide that a practice emergency is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate how brave she is.”
Riko opened her mouth.
Aster raised one finger.
”No.”
”I wasn’t—”
”No.”
Riko closed her mouth.
Then folded her arms.
”...Fine.”
Yuna smiled faintly.
Aster looked around the group.
”Questions?”
Mina raised her hand.
”Are we being evaluated individually or as a formation?”
”Both,” Calla answered.
Mina nodded.
June looked toward the exercise chart.
”What about simulated aircraft contacts?”
”Later,” Calla said. ”First, we need to establish that everyone can maintain the assigned spacing while receiving conflicting reports.”
Yuna raised a hand.
”Will the exercise include carrier communications?”
Aster nodded.
”Yes, but no actual aircraft launches during this stage. Your flight crews remain secured.”
Yuna looked satisfied.
Riko raised her hand again.
Aster closed her eyes.
”Yes, Riko?”
”Do I get to use my main guns?”
”No.”
”Not even blanks?”
”No.”
”What about simulated fire?”
”Yes.”
Riko brightened.
Aster pointed at her.
”Simulated.”
”I heard you!”
”No spontaneous demonstrations.”
”I heard you!”
”No pretending that firing nine eighteen-inch guns inside a training lagoon is an acceptable teaching method.”
Riko looked deeply offended.
”I wasn’t going to do that!”
Yuna adjusted her glasses.
”She considered it.”
”YUNA!”
Aster laughed.
Then clapped her hands.
”All right, girls! Equipment checks!”
The training began.
IV. The Difference Between Confidence and Control
Aster had missed the water.
That was the first thing she noticed when the technicians finished helping her into the Fletcher-class rigging.
The familiar equipment settled against her body in stages.
A reinforced support assembly fitted around her waist and back.
The propulsion units were secured along their proper mounting points.
The compact naval gun structures and associated fittings were checked for safe configuration, their training restrictions verified before anyone permitted her to move.
The torpedo equipment remained empty and secured.
Additional braces supported the damaged areas that were still undergoing rehabilitation.
Nothing appeared out of thin air.
Nothing attached itself through a convenient flash of light.
The technicians performed every connection manually, confirming each lock, fitting, and mechanical interface.
Aster waited patiently.
Mostly.
”How much longer?”
Hana didn’t look up.
”Until we’re finished.”
”I feel like I’ve heard that before.”
”Because you’ve asked three times.”
”Four.”
Hana paused.
Then slowly raised her eyes.
Aster smiled sweetly.
The repair ship regarded her.
”...Would you like me to start the inspection again?”
Aster straightened.
”No, ma’am.”
”Good.”
Hana returned to her work.
Aster glanced toward Riko.
The battleship girl was watching with a delighted expression.
Aster narrowed her eyes.
”Don’t.”
Riko grinned.
”I didn’t say anything!”
”You don’t have to.”
”I was just remembering something.”
”No, you weren’t.”
”A very important historical event.”
”Riko.”
”The Battle of the Bollard.”
Aster closed her eyes.
Yuna made a suspicious little sound.
June turned away.
Mina pressed one hand over her mouth.
Hana continued tightening a fastening point.
”If everyone could stop tormenting my patient while I’m working, I would appreciate it.”
Riko looked toward her.
”Sorry.”
A pause.
Then Hana added, ”There will be plenty of time afterward.”
Aster stared.
”HANA!”
The Akashi-class girl smiled without looking up.
”Hold still.”
A few minutes later, Aster was permitted to enter the water.
The initial movement was deliberately slow.
She stepped from the servicing platform into the shallow section of the lagoon, allowing her rigging’s buoyancy systems to take their intended loads.
The familiar sensation returned gradually.
Water pressing against the equipment.
The subtle resistance of the propulsion assemblies.
The shift in balance as the machinery settled into its operating position.
And beneath all of it, the awareness of her own body.
That last part mattered more than she liked admitting.
Before her injuries, Aster had moved through the water almost instinctively.
She was an experienced beta player.
A Fletcher-class destroyer.
Fast.
Responsive.
Comfortable with the peculiar relationship between human movement and physically worn naval machinery.
Now she had to think about things she’d once done automatically.
How much weight to place through her right side.
How quickly to shift her hips.
Whether a turn caused discomfort near the healing injuries.
How much resistance she could tolerate before the motion became unsafe.
She hated it.
Not because the equipment was difficult.
Because it reminded her that she had been hurt.
That she wasn’t yet the girl who could race across the water without thinking.
That the last battle had taken something from her.
Aster drew a slow breath.
Then moved forward.
The propulsion machinery responded.
A gentle wake formed behind her.
She traveled several meters.
Stopped.
Turned.
Then returned toward the platform.
No pain.
No instability.
No collision with harbor infrastructure.
An excellent beginning.
Calla watched from the observation area.
”How does it feel?”
Aster considered the question.
Then smiled.
”Like home.”
Hana raised her head.
”Any discomfort?”
”A little stiffness.”
”Where?”
Aster indicated the relevant area.
Hana made a note.
”Any sharp pain?”
”No.”
”Any difficulty maintaining balance?”
”Not yet.”
”Good. Remain within the approved operating limits.”
Aster nodded.
Then looked toward the open water.
The training markers seemed to be inviting her toward them.
The lagoon glittered beneath the morning sunlight.
She could almost imagine accelerating.
Feeling the wind rush past.
Leaving a long white wake behind her.
Turning hard around the outer marker and returning before anyone had finished complaining.
Her fingers tightened slightly.
Then she relaxed.
Not yet.
She knew that.
She simply didn’t like knowing it.
Aster turned toward the others.
”All right!”
Her smile returned.
”Let’s see what you’ve learned while I’ve been busy making Hana miserable.”
Hana looked up.
”You make everyone miserable.”
”Only because I care.”
”How generous.”
Riko laughed.
And the exercise began.
The first formation was deliberately simple.
Calla served as the exercise controller.
June and Mina operated together in the central section.
Riko maintained a designated heavy-unit position with sufficient room for her bulky Yamato-class training equipment.
Yuna remained outside the immediate maneuvering lane, coordinating the simulated aviation reports.
Aster moved along the formation’s edge as an instructor and observer, restricted to her approved speed and maneuvering limits.
It was not a combat deployment.
It was a controlled training arrangement.
The girls knew the course.
They knew the marker positions.
They knew the boundaries.
But they did not know when Calla would introduce the simulated problems.
That was the point.
The first several minutes passed without incident.
Mina maintained her assigned position.
June made careful speed corrections.
Riko seemed almost suspiciously focused.
Yuna reported the status of her simulated aircraft operations with the calm precision of someone who had learned that carrier work involved considerably more than launching impressive machines into the sky.
Aster watched.
Then smiled.
”Looking good!”
Riko brightened.
”See?”
”Don’t celebrate yet!”
”I wasn’t!”
”You were about to!”
Yuna’s voice came over the training circuit.
“Controller, Illustrious. Simulated aircraft report. Unknown surface contact, bearing zero-eight-five relative to formation center. Classification uncertain.”
Calla responded immediately.
“Received. Maintain observation. Do not assign hostile classification without confirmation.”
Aster watched the other girls.
June glanced toward the indicated direction.
Mina adjusted her position slightly.
Riko began turning.
Too quickly.
Aster noticed immediately.
”Riko.”
The Yamato-class girl stopped.
”What?”
”Why are you turning?”
”There’s a contact!”
”Unknown contact.”
”Right!”
”Did anyone order you to change course?”
Riko hesitated.
”...No.”
”Then?”
The battleship looked toward the marker.
Then slowly corrected her course.
”...Sorry.”
Aster nodded.
”Good correction.”
Riko glanced toward her.
”Really?”
”Yes.”
The destroyer smiled.
”Noticing your own mistake before it becomes a bigger one is part of learning.”
Riko looked pleased.
Then immediately became suspicious.
”You’re being nice.”
Aster blinked.
”Excuse me?”
”You’re complimenting me.”
”Should I stop?”
”No!”
”Then focus.”
Riko straightened.
”Yes, ma’am!”
Aster sighed.
Yuna’s dry voice returned over the circuit.
“Illustrious to Controller. Yamato’s enthusiasm appears to have been temporarily contained.”
Riko stared toward the carrier.
”YUNA!”
Calla closed her eyes.
”Radio discipline, please.”
”...Sorry.”
Aster laughed.
Then looked back toward the formation.
The girls resumed their assigned positions.
The first problem had been small.
A premature maneuver.
A misunderstood report.
Nothing dangerous.
Nothing that couldn’t be corrected.
But Aster knew how easily those mistakes could grow.
In real combat, an unexpected turn by a heavy unit could disrupt another girl’s firing position.
A sudden speed change could force a destroyer to maneuver into a dangerous area.
A carrier misinterpreting an uncertain contact could launch aircraft toward the wrong location, wasting fuel and placing living fairy crews in unnecessary danger.
And once shellfire began falling, there might not be time to patiently correct every misunderstanding.
Aster looked toward Calla.
The Atlanta-class veteran met her gaze.
They exchanged a small nod.
Then Calla introduced the second problem.
“Exercise formation, Controller. Simulated propulsion casualty. Leander, reduce speed to the designated emergency setting and report.”
Mina reacted immediately.
“Leander acknowledges. Simulated propulsion casualty. Reducing speed.”
Her rigging responded smoothly.
But as she slowed, June’s position became awkward.
The Atlanta-class girl hesitated.
Should she reduce speed to remain alongside Mina?
Maintain her own assigned movement?
Adjust her separation?
Aster watched.
June looked toward Calla.
Then activated her radio.
“Controller, Atlanta. Request clarification. Am I maintaining screen position or adjusting to cover Leander?”
Calla answered.
“Maintain assigned screen position until directed otherwise.”
“Understood.”
June corrected her movement.
Mina maintained the simulated emergency setting.
Riko held her position.
Yuna continued observation.
The formation didn’t collapse.
Nobody attempted an unauthorized rescue.
Nobody accelerated across the training area because she believed moving quickly was automatically helpful.
Aster smiled.
”Good.”
And she meant it.
V. Nobody Wants Another Night Like That
The next exercise was considerably more difficult.
Not because anyone had increased the speed.
Not because the girls had been asked to perform spectacular maneuvers.
But because Calla introduced several problems close together.
An uncertain surface contact.
A simulated communications delay.
A temporary loss of position information from one unit.
A report of damage to an important propulsion component.
And a sudden order to maintain separation while the formation reorganized.
Nothing impossible.
Nothing unfair.
But enough to make the girls work.
June became visibly tense.
Mina’s expression tightened.
Riko concentrated so hard that she stopped making comments entirely.
Yuna began requesting clarification whenever the reports became ambiguous.
Aster watched from the edge of the formation.
Her own movement remained controlled.
She could feel the familiar urge to accelerate forward and demonstrate the correct procedure.
It would have been easy.
Much easier than waiting.
But that wasn’t why she was here.
She wasn’t supposed to solve every problem for them.
She was supposed to help them become capable of solving problems themselves.
Calla’s next instruction sounded over the circuit.
“Formation, Controller. Simulated hostile contact approaching from the southwest. Defensive maneuvering authorized within training limits. Maintain separation. No weapons employment.”
Riko immediately moved to adjust her position.
June began following the assigned defensive course.
Mina reported her simulated propulsion restriction.
Yuna updated the contact picture.
Then June made a mistake.
Not a dramatic one.
Not the sort that would cause a spectacular explosion in a combat demonstration.
She simply failed to account for the speed difference between herself and Mina while maneuvering.
Their separation began narrowing.
Aster noticed.
”June.”
The Atlanta-class girl looked toward her.
Aster pointed.
”Distance.”
June glanced toward Mina.
Her eyes widened.
”Oh!”
She corrected.
Too sharply.
Her equipment responded, causing her position to shift awkwardly.
For a moment, her balance looked uncertain.
Aster’s stomach tightened.
”Easy!”
June reduced the correction.
Her stabilizers compensated.
She regained control.
Mina maintained her own course.
The distance between them began increasing again.
Aster exhaled.
Calla’s voice sounded across the circuit.
“Atlanta, report.”
June swallowed.
“Temporary spacing error. Corrected. No damage.”
“Acknowledged. Maintain assigned position.”
“Yes, Controller.”
The exercise continued.
But June’s expression had changed.
She looked shaken.
Aster watched her.
Then moved closer at a permitted speed.
”June?”
The cruiser turned.
”Yes?”
”You all right?”
June hesitated.
”...Yes.”
Aster raised an eyebrow.
The younger girl looked away.
”...I almost hit Mina.”
”You didn’t.”
”But I almost did.”
Aster nodded.
”Yes.”
June looked at her.
The Fletcher-class girl’s expression had become gentle.
”You made a mistake.”
June lowered her eyes.
”I know.”
”And you corrected it.”
”After you warned me.”
”That’s why we’re training.”
June didn’t answer.
Aster continued.
”Do you think I learned how to handle destroyer rigging without making mistakes?”
The Atlanta-class girl glanced toward her.
Aster smiled.
”Believe me. I have an extremely embarrassing collection of stories.”
From across the training area, Riko shouted, ”WE KNOW!”
Aster slowly turned.
”RIKO!”
The battleship grinned.
Yuna adjusted her glasses.
”I believe the bollard qualifies as recent evidence.”
”YUNA!”
June made a small sound.
Then another.
Then she started laughing.
Not loudly.
Not uncontrollably.
But enough.
Aster smiled.
”There.”
June looked toward her.
”Better?”
”A little.”
”Good.”
The destroyer glanced toward Calla.
Then back at June.
”Now remember what happened. Don’t bury it. Don’t pretend it didn’t matter. Just understand why it happened and make sure you recognize it earlier next time.”
June nodded.
”Right.”
”And if you need to ask for clarification, ask.”
”Yes.”
”Nobody gets extra points for guessing wrong in silence.”
The cruiser smiled faintly.
”Understood.”
Aster nodded.
Then returned toward the outer marker.
But as she moved away, her smile faded.
Because she remembered the night battle too.
The confusion.
The overlapping reports.
The sudden realization that the enemy was capable of things none of them had expected.
The wounded girls trying to withdraw.
The desperate calls for assistance.
The names that had disappeared from the communications network.
Training could not guarantee that such a night would never happen again.
Aster knew that.
She wasn’t foolish.
The Blackwake might return with overwhelming force.
Their next attack might contain weapons Horizon had never seen.
Someone could make every correct decision and still die.
But Aster could teach the girls to communicate clearly.
To recognize danger.
To maintain formation.
To trust the people around them.
And to avoid adding preventable mistakes to an already terrible situation.
That was worth doing.
She looked across the lagoon.
Riko had resumed her position.
Yuna was communicating calmly.
Mina and June were maintaining proper separation.
Calla watched them with the focused expression of an experienced instructor.
Aster smiled faintly.
Again.
Not because she enjoyed making the girls repeat the same exercises.
Because she wanted them to come home.
All of them.
VI. The Medical Officer Has Opinions
By midday, Aster had begun feeling the strain.
It wasn’t particularly dramatic.
There was no sudden collapse.
No sharp scream of pain.
Nothing that would make an exciting scene in a military film.
Just a growing ache near one of the areas that had been injured.
A dull, persistent reminder that her body was still recovering.
She ignored it for approximately three minutes.
Then made the mistake of assuming Hana hadn’t noticed.
”Aster.”
The repair ship’s voice came over the training circuit.
Aster looked toward the platform.
”Yes?”
”Return to the servicing area.”
She blinked.
”What?”
”You’re finished with the waterborne portion.”
”But—”
”Now.”
Aster looked toward Calla.
The Atlanta-class veteran merely raised an eyebrow.
Aster sighed.
”...Understood.”
She returned toward the platform at her approved speed.
Her equipment settled into the shallow servicing position, where the technicians prepared the support stands.
The machinery was secured.
The propulsion systems were brought down.
The relevant weapon assemblies remained locked.
Only after the supports had taken the necessary loads did Aster begin the dismounting procedure.
Hana watched carefully.
Then approached.
”Pain?”
Aster considered lying.
Unfortunately, Hana possessed an expression that suggested she had already anticipated this possibility.
”...A little.”
”Where?”
Aster indicated the area.
Hana nodded.
”Intensity?”
”Manageable.”
”That’s not a number.”
Aster sighed.
”Three?”
Hana raised an eyebrow.
”...Four.”
The Akashi-class girl made a note.
”Any sharp pain?”
”No.”
”Numbness?”
”No.”
”Dizziness?”
”No.”
”Abnormal weakness?”
”No.”
Hana nodded.
”Good. You’re done for now.”
Aster stared.
”Done?”
”Yes.”
”But we still have—”
”The others can continue under Calla.”
”I can help!”
”You can help from the observation platform.”
Aster folded her arms.
”Hana.”
”Aster.”
”I’m fine.”
The repair ship slowly looked up.
Aster recognized that expression.
She had seen it before.
Usually immediately before someone discovered that medical personnel were capable of becoming surprisingly terrifying when their patients refused to cooperate.
Hana spoke calmly.
”You have been cleared for graduated, controlled trials.”
”I know.”
”Not unrestricted operation.”
”I know.”
”And the purpose of graduated trials is to assess your condition without causing further injury.”
”I know.”
Hana folded her own arms.
”Then why are we having this conversation?”
Aster opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Then looked away.
”...Because I want to help.”
The answer came quietly.
Hana’s expression softened.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then the repair ship sighed.
”I know.”
Aster looked toward the lagoon.
Riko was turning around one of the markers.
June was making another careful spacing adjustment.
Yuna was reviewing the next simulation.
Mina waited for the controller’s instructions.
”They’re still learning,” Aster said.
”Yes.”
”And Calla can’t teach everyone by herself.”
”She’s not by herself.”
Aster looked at Hana.
The repair ship continued.
”You’re still here.”
”...I am?”
”Yes.”
Hana pointed toward the observation area.
”You can watch. You can review their maneuvers. You can explain mistakes and help them understand what they need to improve.”
Aster hesitated.
”But I can’t demonstrate.”
”Not right now.”
The Fletcher-class girl looked down.
Hana’s voice became gentler.
”Aster.”
She looked up.
”You don’t have to prove you’re useful by hurting yourself.”
The words struck harder than Aster expected.
For a moment, she couldn’t answer.
Then she looked away.
”...Right.”
Hana smiled faintly.
”Good.”
A pause.
Then she added, ”Besides, if you damage that rigging again, Dain may personally bury you beneath a stack of repair orders.”
Aster blinked.
Then laughed.
”He wouldn’t!”
Hana gave her a flat look.
”...Would he?”
The repair ship considered that.
”Probably not.”
Aster relaxed.
”Thank goodness.”
”But Corwin might.”
Aster stared.
Hana smiled.
”Come on. Observation platform.”
VII. A Commander Who Understands Too Much
Kade arrived at the training lagoon shortly after the afternoon session began.
He hadn’t intended to stay long.
There were still reports waiting on his desk.
The provisional cargo flight required runway certification and receiving arrangements.
Corwin wanted an updated supply allocation.
Eliza was already discussing menus based on food that hadn’t even arrived.
Irena had requested another review of the medical department’s consumable stores.
And Aaron Voss had submitted a preliminary intelligence memorandum concerning recent Blackwake patrol behavior.
Kade had enough work to occupy several people.
Unfortunately, he remained only one person.
A particularly short person.
With a deeply unhealthy tendency to believe that if something needed doing, he should probably do it himself.
He knew this was a flaw.
He simply hadn’t found a convenient way to stop.
The training lagoon offered a welcome distraction.
He approached the observation platform, where several personnel were watching the Keelborn exercises.
Aster sat beneath the awning with a clipboard resting across her knees.
Her rigging had been removed and secured nearby.
A small bottle of water stood beside her chair.
Kade stopped.
Then looked at her.
”Well.”
Aster raised her head.
Her expression brightened.
”Kade!”
He glanced toward the lagoon.
Then toward the equipment.
Then back at her.
”No reports of injured harbor furniture?”
Her expression changed immediately.
”Oh, don’t you start.”
He looked thoughtful.
”That’s promising.”
”Kade.”
”Maybe the bollards have finally negotiated a ceasefire.”
She glared.
He smiled.
Aster pointed toward the empty chair beside her.
”Sit down.”
He raised an eyebrow.
”Ordering your commanding officer around?”
”Yes.”
”Bold.”
”Very.”
He considered that.
Then sat.
Aster smiled triumphantly.
”See? Easy.”
Kade leaned back.
”Enjoy your victory.”
”I will.”
For a moment, they watched the training exercise.
Riko maintained her position through a controlled turn.
June and Mina adjusted their separation.
Yuna delivered a simulated aviation report.
Calla observed from the control station.
Kade nodded slowly.
”How are they doing?”
Aster looked pleased.
”Better.”
”That good?”
”Better than yesterday.”
”Which is?”
”Good.”
He glanced toward her.
”Compelling technical assessment.”
She laughed.
”Fine. Their spacing’s improving. Communications are cleaner. Riko’s finally learning that moving the entire Yamato assembly requires something resembling a plan.”
Kade nodded.
”Revolutionary.”
”And June caught herself making the same correction error twice.”
”How bad?”
”Nothing serious. She was embarrassed.”
”Good.”
Aster blinked.
”Good?”
Kade looked toward the water.
”Embarrassment’s cheaper than casualties.”
Her smile faded slightly.
He continued.
”Provided nobody uses it as an excuse to humiliate her.”
Aster nodded.
”I didn’t.”
”I know.”
She looked at him.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Aster glanced toward the lagoon.
”Nobody wants another night like that.”
Kade’s expression changed.
Not dramatically.
But enough.
”I know.”
Aster folded her hands over the clipboard.
”They’re trying really hard.”
”Good.”
”Riko especially.”
He glanced toward the battleship.
”She’s got a habit of doing that.”
Aster smiled faintly.
”She wants to be useful.”
”She already is.”
”She doesn’t always feel that way.”
Kade watched Riko complete another controlled maneuver.
Her Yamato-class equipment remained cumbersome compared with the sleek configurations worn by experienced Keelborn.
The great gun structures moved carefully through the turn, supported by the training assembly’s stability systems.
She looked determined.
Focused.
Proud.
And still so very inexperienced in certain things.
Kade understood that feeling.
Better than he wanted to.
He had once been given a weapon with extraordinary power and told that the people around him expected miracles.
The weapon had not taught him how to survive.
It had only made surviving his responsibility.
He watched Riko for another moment.
Then spoke.
”She’ll get there.”
Aster looked at him.
”You sound sure.”
”She’s learning.”
”That doesn’t mean she’ll be ready if the Blackwake attacks tomorrow.”
”No.”
Aster lowered her eyes.
Kade continued.
”That’s why we don’t pretend she’s ready for things she hasn’t been trained to do.”
He glanced toward the equipment reports.
”And why we keep training.”
She nodded slowly.
Then looked at him.
”...You really don’t like sending people out before they’re ready.”
He gave a small, humorless smile.
”No.”
”Because of what happened?”
He looked toward her.
She hesitated.
”I mean... the battles.”
Kade held her gaze for a moment.
Then looked back toward the lagoon.
”Partly.”
Aster waited.
He didn’t elaborate.
She knew better than to force an explanation from him when he clearly wasn’t ready to give one.
Instead, she shifted slightly in her chair.
Then asked, ”How’s your day been?”
Kade stared toward the water.
”...I fought a telephone.”
Aster blinked.
”What?”
”And lost.”
She slowly turned toward him.
”...You lost a fight with a telephone?”
”Terribly.”
Her mouth twitched.
”Was it armed?”
”Regulations.”
Aster burst out laughing.
Kade folded his arms.
”Vicious opponent.”
”Oh, no.”
”Completely immune to intimidation.”
”Kade.”
”Possessed the ability to say no in approximately seventeen different administrative dialects.”
She laughed harder.
He nodded solemnly.
”Nearly killed me.”
Aster covered her mouth.
”What were you trying to do?”
”Get food delivered.”
She stopped laughing.
Then blinked.
”Food?”
”Yes.”
He leaned back.
”Apparently, people insist upon eating.”
Aster smiled.
”Strange habit.”
”Deeply inconvenient.”
”What happened?”
He explained.
Not every detail.
Not every requisition number.
But enough.
The regional distribution unit.
The planned cargo aircraft.
The refrigerated provisions.
Fresh vegetables.
Medical food.
The requirements for accepting a temperature-sensitive delivery.
And the question he’d asked about carrying the restoration components.
Aster listened carefully.
When he finished, she tilted her head.
”So they said no?”
”Flat no.”
”Even though the plane might have space?”
”Wrong distribution category. They only handle food, medical supplies, and related things.”
Aster considered that.
Then nodded.
”Makes sense.”
Kade looked offended.
”You’re supposed to sympathize with me.”
”I do!”
”Doesn’t sound like it.”
She grinned.
”Poor Commander Kade. Defeated by vegetables and shipping regulations.”
He stared.
She smiled sweetly.
”Would you like a hug?”
Kade narrowed his eyes.
”Are you mocking me?”
”Absolutely.”
He snorted.
Then looked toward the lagoon.
Aster’s expression softened.
”But getting food here is important.”
”Yes.”
”Especially for the girls recovering.”
”Yes.”
”And the medical department.”
”Yes.”
She smiled.
”Then that’s good news.”
Kade nodded.
”It is.”
Aster leaned back beside him.
For several seconds, they sat quietly.
The lagoon glittered.
Riko shouted something at June.
Calla called for better radio discipline.
Yuna made a remark that caused Riko to become audibly offended.
Aster smiled.
Then looked toward Kade again.
”You know...”
He raised an eyebrow.
”Hm?”
”You really should rest more.”
He sighed.
”Here we go.”
”I’m serious.”
”So am I. This is a terrifying development.”
She ignored him.
”You’ve been running around the island since the battle.”
”Occupational hazard.”
”Paperwork. Repairs. Food. Medical supplies. Sakura’s mission. Everything.”
”Not everything.”
”Most things.”
He didn’t answer.
Aster watched him.
Then, very gently, she rested her hand against his.
Kade went still.
Not dramatically.
Just enough for her to notice.
She didn’t pull away.
Neither did he.
For a moment, the sounds of the training lagoon seemed distant.
Then Aster spoke.
”You don’t have to fix everything yourself.”
He looked at their hands.
Then at her.
”...You sound like Mara.”
Aster smiled.
”She’s a smart woman.”
”Terrifyingly.”
”Then maybe you should listen.”
Kade considered that.
Then sighed.
”You’re both conspiring against me.”
”Obviously.”
”Unacceptable.”
She leaned a little closer.
”Completely.”
For a few moments, they watched the girls train.
And Kade allowed himself to remain seated.
No paperwork.
No radio.
No immediate crisis.
Just the warmth of the afternoon and a Fletcher-class girl sitting close enough that their shoulders occasionally touched.
He found that he didn’t particularly mind.
VIII. When the Enemy Doesn’t Wait
The final training exercise of the afternoon began with a deliberately incomplete report.
Calla had arranged the scenario to simulate an unexpected contact approaching Horizon’s defensive waters.
The girls were given a general position.
A possible enemy direction.
An uncertain classification.
And instructions to maintain their assigned patrol formation until additional information became available.
The purpose was not to defeat a fictional enemy.
It was to see how the girls handled uncertainty.
Aster watched from the observation platform.
Kade remained beside her.
Riko maintained the heavy-unit position.
June and Mina formed the supporting element.
Yuna coordinated the simulated aviation picture.
The first report came through.
“Exercise formation, Controller. Unidentified surface contact. Classification pending.”
Riko straightened.
June glanced toward Mina.
Yuna immediately requested clarification.
“Controller, Illustrious. Do we have any indication of hostile intent?”
“Negative. No confirmation.”
“Understood. Maintaining observation.”
Kade nodded faintly.
Aster smiled.
”Good.”
The second report followed.
“Possible additional contact. Bearing uncertain. Acoustic information incomplete.”
Mina looked toward the outer marker.
June tightened her formation.
Riko’s shoulders rose.
Aster noticed.
”She’s getting tense.”
Kade watched.
”Yes.”
”Think she’ll break position?”
”Depends.”
”On what?”
”Whether she remembers she’s not the only person responsible for the formation.”
Aster glanced at him.
Then smiled.
”Good answer.”
The next report arrived.
“Simulated torpedo threat. Sector uncertain.”
Riko immediately raised her radio.
“Yamato to Controller. Request maneuver authorization.”
Calla answered.
“Stand by. Maintain assigned separation.”
Riko hesitated.
Her rigging continued moving.
She looked toward the indicated sector.
Then toward June.
And waited.
Aster smiled.
Kade nodded.
”Good.”
Then Calla introduced the final problem.
“Exercise formation, Controller. Leander reports simulated propulsion degradation. Atlanta, maintain screen until ordered to reposition. Yamato, prepare to cover the withdrawal corridor. Illustrious, maintain observation.”
Mina reduced speed.
June held her position.
Riko adjusted cautiously.
Yuna requested an updated contact position.
For several seconds, the formation moved with surprising discipline.
Then the simulated threat changed direction.
Calla updated the report.
Riko began turning.
June recognized the developing problem.
She transmitted immediately.
“Yamato, Atlanta. Your projected course intersects my station. Request adjustment.”
Riko looked toward her.
Then checked her course.
“Received. Correcting.”
She adjusted.
Not quickly.
Not perfectly.
But early enough.
The separation remained safe.
June continued.
Mina maintained her emergency setting.
Yuna delivered another simulated report.
And the exercise concluded without a collision, unauthorized maneuver, or communications breakdown.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Calla announced:
“Exercise complete. All units return to designated servicing positions.”
Riko raised both fists.
”YES!”
Aster laughed.
Kade smiled.
Yuna’s voice came over the circuit.
“Congratulations, Riko. You have successfully completed a training exercise without attempting to defeat the entire enemy fleet by yourself.”
Riko turned.
”YUNA!”
The carrier smiled.
“A significant achievement.”
June started laughing.
Mina followed.
Even Calla looked amused.
Aster leaned forward.
”Well?”
Kade nodded.
”Better.”
She grinned.
”Just better?”
”Much better.”
Aster looked pleased.
He continued.
”But don’t tell Riko I said that.”
She blinked.
”Why?”
”Her ego’s already large enough to require its own anchorage.”
Aster burst out laughing.
Unfortunately, Riko was approaching the servicing area.
And she had apparently heard enough.
”COMMANDER!”
Kade slowly looked toward her.
”Ah.”
Riko glared.
”What was that about my ego?”
He considered his options.
Then smiled.
”Excellent work today.”
She blinked.
”...What?”
”Your formation control was considerably better.”
Riko stared.
Then slowly brightened.
”Really?”
”Really.”
Her expression became delighted.
Kade nodded toward the water.
”Still plenty to improve, but you’re making progress.”
Riko smiled.
A broad, genuine smile.
”Thank you!”
”Keep it up.”
”Yes, Commander!”
She turned and hurried toward the servicing platform.
Aster watched her go.
Then slowly looked toward Kade.
”...You distracted her.”
He folded his arms.
”Did I?”
”With a compliment.”
”Wasn’t false.”
”No.”
She narrowed her eyes.
”But you absolutely did that on purpose.”
Kade smiled.
”Strategic withdrawal.”
Aster laughed.
”You’re terrible.”
”Frequently.”
She leaned against him.
”Good thing I like you.”
Kade went still.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Aster noticed.
Her cheeks warmed.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Kade looked toward her.
”...Your standards are questionable.”
She stared.
Then groaned.
”Kade!”
He laughed.
And Aster, despite herself, joined him.
IX. The Work That Keeps Us Alive
The sun was beginning to descend when Kade returned to headquarters.
The afternoon had been productive.
The food-delivery arrangements were progressing.
Engineering had confirmed that the refrigeration-room repairs could be completed with materials already held at Horizon.
The runway inspection remained scheduled.
Corwin was preparing the receiving plan.
Eliza had begun adjusting her menus.
Irena was coordinating the medical cargo requirements.
And the training reports suggested that Horizon’s developing Keelborn were improving.
No miracles.
No sudden solutions.
No convenient disappearance of the island’s many problems.
But progress.
Actual progress.
Kade found Mara waiting in his office.
She looked up as he entered.
”Commander.”
”Chief.”
”How was training?”
”Productive.”
”Any injuries?”
”No new ones.”
”Excellent.”
”Riko’s ego remains a threat to maritime navigation.”
Mara sighed.
”Of course.”
”Aster’s recovering.”
”Good.”
”Calla’s doing good work.”
”Also good.”
”And June and Mina are improving.”
Mara smiled.
”Then the training program is doing what it’s supposed to.”
Kade nodded.
”Seems that way.”
He crossed to his desk.
A fresh folder rested beside the telephone.
He looked at it.
Then at Mara.
”...More paperwork?”
”Unfortunately.”
He sighed.
”Terrible.”
”But there’s something you may appreciate.”
He raised an eyebrow.
Mara indicated the top page.
”Regional Distribution has acknowledged the provisional airlift request. Airfield Operations is coordinating an acceptable receiving window, subject to aircraft assignment and final cargo approval.”
Kade picked up the report.
He read it.
Then read it again.
A small smile appeared.
”Good.”
Mara nodded.
”Very.”
He turned the page.
”The engineering cargo?”
”Still not eligible for that service.”
”Figured.”
”Sakura’s operation remains our primary route for the restoration components.”
Kade nodded.
”Then we keep both efforts separate.”
”Agreed.”
He looked toward the window.
The lagoon was beginning to turn gold.
Farther away, the damaged western facilities remained under repair.
The scars of the night battle were still visible.
They would remain visible for some time.
Some might never disappear entirely.
But on the eastern side of the island, training had continued.
In the administrative district, food shipments were being arranged.
At the docks, engineers were repairing damaged equipment.
In the kitchens, Eliza was preparing dinner.
And somewhere in the medical annex, eleven Pendants remained protected.
Waiting.
Kade set down the report.
For a moment, his expression became distant.
Mara watched him.
Then spoke quietly.
”Something on your mind?”
He considered the question.
”...A lot of things.”
”I assumed.”
He smiled faintly.
Then looked toward the harbor.
”We’ve spent so much time dealing with emergencies.”
”Yes.”
”Blackwake attacks. Repairs. Casualties. Missing supplies.”
Mara nodded.
Kade continued.
”Sometimes I forget that running a base is supposed to involve ordinary things.”
”Such as?”
”Food.”
”Yes.”
”Training.”
”Naturally.”
”Keeping people healthy.”
”Of course.”
He looked toward her.
”Making sure everyone has a reason to get up tomorrow.”
Mara’s expression softened.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then nodded.
”That’s a good way to think about it.”
Kade sighed.
”Shame it’s so much work.”
She laughed quietly.
”Nobody said command would be easy.”
”No.”
He leaned back against the desk.
”Though I feel someone should’ve mentioned the vegetables.”
”An oversight.”
”A criminal one.”
Mara smiled.
Then collected the completed reports.
”I’ll handle the next round of coordination.”
Kade glanced at her.
”You sure?”
”Yes.”
”Because I can—”
”Commander.”
He stopped.
She raised an eyebrow.
”Go have dinner.”
He stared.
”...You’re dismissing me?”
”I’m strongly recommending that you eat before Eliza begins another campaign.”
Kade considered that.
Then nodded gravely.
”Understood.”
Mara turned toward the door.
”And Kade?”
”Hm?”
”Good work today.”
He blinked.
For a moment, he looked almost embarrassed.
Then his familiar expression returned.
”Don’t spread that around.”
She smiled.
”Wouldn’t dream of it.”
Outside, the evening air was warm.
The island smelled of salt, damp concrete, and cooking food carried on the breeze.
Kade walked slowly along the path leading from headquarters toward the mess hall.
He passed a group of maintenance workers returning from the western piers.
They saluted.
He returned the gesture.
A pair of SIA personnel crossed the road ahead, discussing tomorrow’s training schedule.
Farther down the path, a few off-duty sailors were arguing about something that sounded suspiciously like a card game.
Ordinary things.
Little things.
The sort of moments people rarely remembered when recounting a war.
But they mattered.
Kade knew that.
He had spent too many years seeing what happened when ordinary life disappeared.
He had watched people forget what peace was supposed to feel like.
He had watched cities become nothing more than defensive positions.
Families become casualty lists.
Children become soldiers.
And entire nations become so accustomed to disaster that survival itself was treated as a triumph.
He didn’t want that for Horizon.
Not if he could help it.
As he approached the mess hall, he heard familiar voices.
Riko.
Yuna.
June.
Aster.
Apparently discussing the training exercise.
Loudly.
He stopped outside the doorway.
Listened.
Then smiled.
Riko was defending her performance.
Aster was being insufferable.
Yuna was supplying ammunition in the form of dry commentary.
June was laughing.
Somewhere nearby, Hana was probably wondering whether she could legally confiscate all their equipment until they learned to behave.
Kade shook his head.
”...Idiots.”
The word carried no real irritation.
Only affection.
He reached for the door.
Then paused.
Far beyond the horizon, Sakura Nagase and her escorts remained on their mission.
Eleven Pendants were waiting.
Four were missing.
The Blackwake still occupied the sea.
And Horizon still needed more repairs, supplies, training, and preparation than any one Commander could reasonably provide.
None of that had changed.
But tomorrow, if the arrangements held, an aircraft would be one step closer to bringing fresh food to the island.
Tomorrow, Aster’s students would return to the lagoon.
Tomorrow, the engineers would repair another piece of equipment.
Tomorrow, the medical department would continue caring for its wounded.
And tomorrow, somewhere across the Pacific, Sakura would continue trying to bring home the machinery Horizon desperately needed.
Kade smiled faintly.
It wasn’t much.
Not compared with the enormity of everything still threatening them.
But it was something.
A place worth protecting.
A community worth feeding.
People worth teaching.
A future worth preparing for.
He opened the mess-hall door.
Riko immediately spotted him.
”COMMANDER!”
Kade stopped.
”...What did I do?”
Aster turned.
Her expression brightened.
”Kade!”
Yuna adjusted her glasses.
June smiled.
And somewhere behind them, Eliza called from the kitchen.
”Commander! You’re just in time!”
Kade looked toward the serving counter.
Then toward the girls.
Then back toward the kitchen.
”...Please tell me it’s not canned vegetables again.”
There was a pause.
Eliza’s expression became dangerous.
Kade slowly closed his eyes.
Aster began laughing.
Riko followed.
Yuna smiled into her tea.
And Kade Bher, Commander of Horizon Atoll, former Holy Gauntlet Hero of Wysteria, survivor of things no one on this island could possibly imagine, found himself facing the most terrifying prospect of the entire day.
An offended cook.
”...I should’ve stayed in my office.”
The mess hall erupted in laughter.
Outside, the Pacific sun sank slowly toward the horizon.
And Horizon Atoll continued living.
Not merely surviving.
Living.
One ordinary, precious day at a time.
