Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

I. The Morning That Came Anyway

The sun rose over Horizon Atoll as though nothing had happened.

That was the first cruelty of the morning.

Its light slipped over the eastern horizon in long, golden bands, touching the clouds above the lagoon and turning the water beneath them a gentle blue.

The sky was nearly clear.

A few seabirds wheeled above the breakwater.

The wind came from the southeast, carrying the familiar smells of salt, wet concrete, and warm tropical vegetation.

Somewhere on the eastern side of the island, a rooster announced the new day with an enthusiasm that could only belong to a creature completely unaware that naval warfare existed.

It was beautiful.

Painfully beautiful.

And nothing about it resembled the night before.

The western approaches had burned for hours.

Battleship guns had thrown orange fire across the darkness. Blackwake cruisers had torn through defensive formations. Destroyer girls had shouted warnings to one another while torpedoes cut through the water beneath their feet.

Aircraft had fallen burning into the sea.

A conventional Tribal-class destroyer had fought through the night to protect vessels carrying wounded people.

And fifteen Keelborn had gone beneath the waves.

Now the sun was rising.

The gulls were crying.

The tide was coming in.

And the world behaved as though sunrise had somehow made everything all right.

It hadn’t.

Horizon Atoll was still alive, but it looked like a place that had spent the previous day arguing with death.

The western lighthouse was gone.

The shoreline defenses were scarred by shell impacts, several still surrounded by temporary warning barriers while engineers inspected unexploded ordnance and damaged structural supports.

One maintenance pier had lost a crane.

Another had been converted into an emergency rigging-recovery berth.

Across the harbor, damaged Keelborn equipment stood beneath temporary floodlamps, some of it stripped down to its support frames while exhausted mechanics worked through prioritized inspection lists.

There were fewer girls moving along the walkways than usual.

The ones who were present walked slowly.

Some had bandaged arms.

Others had braces fitted over injured joints or wore their rigging’s temporary maintenance supports.

Several were being escorted by medics who seemed determined to enforce the idea that surviving a battle did not automatically grant permission to resume normal duties.

On the northern service road, a destroyer girl sat on a wooden crate while two engineers carefully detached a twisted gun housing from her damaged rigging.

She stared at the machinery as though it belonged to somebody else.

A woman carrying breakfast stopped beside her.

“Have you eaten?”

The destroyer blinked.

“What?”

“Breakfast.”

The girl looked toward the food.

For a moment, she seemed confused by the idea.

Then she shook her head.

“No.”

The woman handed her a paper-wrapped roll.

“Here.”

The destroyer accepted it.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

The woman walked on.

The girl looked down at the bread.

It was warm.

Not particularly special.

Just bread.

She held it for several seconds before taking a bite.

Then, quite unexpectedly, she began crying.

The engineer beside her stopped working.

For a moment, he seemed uncertain what to do.

Then he placed his tools on the crate and sat beside her.

He didn’t ask why.

There were too many possible answers.

Instead, he waited while she ate.

And cried.

And tried to remember what it had felt like to wake up on an ordinary morning.

The harbor’s surviving repair crews had stopped pretending they could finish everything by noon.

Hana Saeki had personally struck that expectation from the maintenance schedule shortly after sunrise.

She’d done it with a red pencil.

Violently.

One of her technicians had watched the process with a mixture of fear and admiration.

“Chief?”

Hana looked up.

“What?”

The technician indicated the clipboard.

“Is that the revised schedule?”

“Yes.”

“It seems…”

He hesitated.

Hana narrowed her eyes.

“Seems what?”

“Less optimistic.”

“Good.”

The man blinked.

She pushed the clipboard toward him.

“Yesterday we had people promising three-hour repairs on equipment that needed six hours of inspection before we could even establish what was broken.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

“We had girls fighting with temporary fittings. We had damaged support frames accepting loads they weren’t designed to carry. And we had people skipping meals because they thought the Blackwake would be polite enough to wait until maintenance was finished.”

The technician lowered his eyes.

Hana exhaled.

Then her expression softened.

“I know why everyone was trying.”

He nodded.

For a moment, she looked toward the enormous machinery filling the repair hangar.

A damaged battleship turret.

Several cruiser mounts.

Twisted destroyer supports.

Riko’s portside stabilizer assembly, removed once again for a full inspection after the Yamato-class girl’s restricted night deployment.

Hana swallowed.

Then continued quietly.

“But nobody is going to help these girls by rushing a repair and sending them out with machinery that fails the next time someone fires a gun.”

The technician nodded more firmly.

“Understood.”

“Good.”

She reached for a different clipboard.

Then paused.

“And make sure the night crew gets relieved.”

The man hesitated.

“Some of them volunteered to stay.”

“I know.”

“They said they’re still able to work.”

Hana looked toward him.

For a moment, her expression became remarkably severe.

“That’s what exhausted people say before they make mistakes.”

The technician straightened.

“Yes, Chief.”

“Send them to breakfast. Then bed.”

He nodded and departed.

Hana watched him go.

Only after he disappeared did she allow herself to lean against the workbench.

Her hands hurt.

Her back hurt.

Her head hurt.

And she was so tired that the simplest mechanical drawings seemed to blur if she stared at them too long.

She closed her eyes.

Only for a moment.

Then opened them.

The repair hangar remained.

The damage remained.

The work remained.

But at least the guns had stopped.

For now, that would have to be enough.

At the western reception pier, the conventional destroyer Tribal lay alongside a temporary servicing berth.

Her paint was scorched.

One of her after gun mounts had been wrecked.

A splinter-damaged section of the superstructure was covered by a protective tarpaulin, and engineering personnel had begun tracing the extent of the damage to the communication circuits running beneath it.

Her all-female crew had survived the battle.

Not without injuries.

Not without exhaustion.

And certainly not without memories they would have preferred to leave somewhere in the dark sea behind them.

Captain Eliza Ward stood on the bridge wing holding a cup of tea.

It had gone cold.

She hadn’t noticed.

Below her, two sailors carried a sealed medical supply case toward the gangway.

Another supervised the removal of damaged equipment.

A third stood near the hatch leading into the temporary casualty area.

For several seconds, Eliza watched her.

Then she lowered her eyes.

The room had been crowded with wounded men only hours earlier.

Ironwake survivors.

Baltimore survivors.

Sailors dragged from burning wreckage and oily water.

Now most had been transferred ashore.

The space was empty.

That should have felt like an accomplishment.

It did.

But it also reminded her of the people they hadn’t found.

Ruth Mercer emerged from the bridge.

Her injured arm rested in a sling.

Eliza turned.

“Morning.”

Ruth looked toward the cold tea.

Then toward her captain’s face.

“That’s a generous description.”

Eliza almost smiled.

“Not much of a morning person?”

“I was, once.”

The captain raised an eyebrow.

“When?”

Ruth considered that.

“Before yesterday.”

For a moment, the two women shared a tired smile.

Then Ruth moved beside the railing.

Below them, Horizon personnel were unloading supplies from a small truck.

Several boxes carried medical markings.

Another contained fresh bedding.

A kitchen worker had arrived with insulated containers of breakfast.

The destroyer’s crew was being fed again.

Ruth looked toward the pier.

“Apparently they’ve decided we’re staying.”

Eliza’s expression softened.

“Have they?”

“They’re assigning us a repair team.”

“Good.”

“And temporary quarters for personnel whose sections can’t be occupied during the work.”

Eliza blinked.

Then looked toward her executive officer.

“Really?”

Ruth nodded.

“Really.”

A pause.

The captain looked toward the harbor.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then whispered:

“That’s more than we deserve.”

Ruth turned sharply.

“Eliza.”

The captain looked up.

Her executive officer’s expression was unusually firm.

“We pulled people out of the water.”

“I know.”

“We protected medical transports.”

“Yes.”

“We fought the Blackwake until we couldn’t safely continue.”

Eliza lowered her eyes.

Ruth continued.

“We made the right decision.”

For several seconds, the captain said nothing.

Then she looked toward the western sea.

“I know.”

Her voice was quieter.

“But I keep thinking about the ones we couldn’t reach.”

Ruth’s expression softened.

For a moment, she seemed to understand perfectly.

Then she moved closer.

“So do I.”

They stood together.

The sun continued rising.

And the crew below began unloading breakfast.

II. Three Things the Tide Refused to Keep

The first Pendant was found at six forty-three.

A civilian maintenance worker named Joel Mercer was walking the western beach beside two volunteers when he saw something glinting between the dark rocks near the tide line.

He almost missed it.

The previous day’s fighting had left the shoreline littered with debris.

Splintered wood.

Broken flotation equipment.

Fragments of metal.

Lengths of cable.

A damaged ammunition container that had already been marked for disposal.

The search teams had been instructed not to touch anything that might be unexploded ordnance, and to report unfamiliar objects rather than attempting to identify them themselves.

Joel had spent nearly an hour doing exactly that.

Then sunlight struck something small and silver.

He stopped.

For a moment, he thought it was a piece of broken instrument housing.

Then a wave retreated.

The object moved slightly in the wet sand.

A chain lay tangled around it.

Joel’s expression changed.

He crouched.

Looked closer.

And went very still.

The shape was unmistakable.

A Keelborn Pendant.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

Then he raised one hand.

“Over here!”

The two volunteers turned.

One hurried toward him.

“What?”

Joel pointed.

For a moment, the volunteer stared.

Then her face went pale.

“Oh.”

The other woman stopped a few paces away.

She understood immediately.

Nobody reached down.

Nobody wanted to damage it.

Nobody wanted to make a mistake.

Joel slowly removed his radio.

His hands were shaking.

“Beach Recovery Three to Harbor Control.”

Victor’s relief operator answered.

“Harbor Control receiving.”

Joel swallowed.

“We’ve found a Pendant.”

A pause.

Then the operator’s voice changed.

“Confirm.”

Joel looked down.

The little object lay in the sand.

Its silver surface was scratched.

The chain was tangled.

A faint line of dirt marked the edge.

But it appeared intact.

He swallowed.

“Confirmed. Keelborn Pendant. Western beach, search marker twelve.”

The answer came immediately.

“Do not move it unless necessary to prevent loss to the tide. Recovery specialist responding.”

Joel nodded.

“Understood.”

The connection ended.

For several seconds, the three workers remained standing.

Then another wave rolled toward the beach.

Joel looked down.

The water was almost touching the Pendant.

He hesitated.

The radio instruction remained clear.

Unless necessary to prevent loss to the tide.

He slowly removed a clean cloth from the recovery kit.

Then reached toward the silver object.

His hand paused.

For a moment, he felt absurdly nervous.

It was only metal.

Small enough to fit in his palm.

But he knew it wasn’t merely metal.

He’d heard the stories.

Everybody at Horizon had.

What Pendants meant.

Why the Keelborn protected them.

Why Camille had crossed half the ocean carrying five belonging to girls who hadn’t come home.

Joel swallowed.

Then carefully lifted the Pendant before the next wave reached it.

It rested in the cloth.

Cold.

Wet.

Surprisingly heavy.

He looked toward the two volunteers.

One had begun crying.

The other whispered:

“Whose is it?”

Joel lowered his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

He closed the cloth around the Pendant.

Then spoke quietly.

“But we’ll find out.”

The second Pendant appeared twenty minutes later.

Farther south.

Caught beneath a line of seaweed and broken driftwood.

A recovery team spotted it while examining the beach for pieces of damaged destroyer equipment.

The third was found near the remnants of an old navigation marker, half-buried in sand where the tide had left it.

Three separate discoveries.

Three small objects.

Three girls who had disappeared in different parts of the night battle.

And now the ocean had brought something of them back.

By seven thirty, all three Pendants had been transferred to Horizon’s secured recovery facility.

They were rinsed and cleaned according to the established preservation procedures, examined for physical damage, and matched against identification records.

No one attempted to activate them.

No one knew how to repair the destroyed Respite Bath yet.

And nobody was permitted to promise that securing a Pendant guaranteed a girl’s return.

But the objects were safe.

That mattered.

Aaron Voss stood beside the identification officer while the final comparisons were completed.

He had not slept.

His eyes were red.

His normally neat clothing looked as though it had been slept in, although he hadn’t enjoyed that luxury.

The first record appeared.

The identification officer checked the serial marking.

Then the archived equipment photograph.

Then the associated registry.

For a moment, she went quiet.

Aaron looked toward her.

“What?”

She swallowed.

“Kiri.”

The lieutenant stopped.

For several seconds, he stared.

Then slowly nodded.

“The Akizuki-class destroyer?”

“Yes.”

The girl who had saved a support cruiser’s Pendant.

The girl who had remained behind to protect a recovery craft.

The girl whose own Pendant had vanished beneath the water.

Aaron lowered his eyes.

“Kiri.”

The officer recorded the identification.

Then opened the next file.

A few minutes passed.

The second Pendant was confirmed.

Suzu.

The Akizuki-class destroyer.

The girl whose Pendant Hibari had managed to recover before sinking herself.

The small silver object had somehow worked free of the lost recovery pouch and reached the shore.

Aaron swallowed.

For several seconds, he could only stare.

Then the identification officer turned toward the third Pendant.

Her expression was tense.

She checked the marking.

Then checked it again.

Then opened the corresponding registry.

The lieutenant waited.

Finally, she looked toward him.

“The Yūgumo-class girl.”

Aaron’s breath caught.

For a moment, the memory returned.

Asashio’s frantic transmission.

The torpedo attack.

The lost Pendant sinking beyond her outstretched hand.

Now it had washed ashore.

Aaron slowly pulled out a chair.

Sat.

And stared at the three records.

Kiri.

Suzu.

The Yūgumo-class girl.

Three.

Not fifteen.

Not seven.

Three.

He looked toward the recovery officer.

“Notify Operations.”

She nodded.

“And the associated surviving units?”

Aaron swallowed.

For a moment, he thought of Asashio.

Of Emi.

Of Shiori in Medical.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Carefully.”

The officer understood.

She reached for the telephone.

Aaron remained sitting.

For several seconds, he looked toward the sealed containers.

Then whispered:

“Welcome home.”

At seven forty-six, Mara brought the news to Kade.

The Commander was standing in Operations beside the western tactical plot.

He hadn’t removed his jacket.

His hair was a mess.

The shadows beneath his eyes were dark enough that the station’s physician had already threatened to order him into bed.

He had spent the previous hour reviewing the final Blackwake tracking reports.

The enemy’s surface groups had cleared the immediate engagement area.

Long-range observations placed the surviving fleet on a broadly westward course, consistent with a return toward Blackwake-controlled territories in the Mid-Pacific.

The last reliable contact had been lost beyond the outer surveillance limit.

There were no indications of an immediate renewed attack.

Not in the local theater.

Not that morning.

Maki and Reina were gone.

For now.

Kade looked toward the plot.

Two Princess symbols had been moved beyond the primary tactical display.

The markers remained on the intelligence board.

He had no intention of removing them.

Mara approached quietly.

“Kade.”

He looked up.

“Chief.”

“We have news.”

His expression sharpened immediately.

“Blackwake?”

“No.”

A pause.

“Recovery.”

He stopped.

For several seconds, he stared.

Then asked:

“What?”

Mara held out the report.

“Three Pendants washed up on the western beach.”

Kade went perfectly still.

The Chief continued.

“All three have been identified.”

He slowly accepted the paper.

His eyes moved down the page.

Kiri.

Suzu.

Yūgumo-class.

For several seconds, he didn’t speak.

Then he looked toward Mara.

“Intact?”

She nodded.

“All three.”

His mouth opened.

Closed.

Then he lowered his eyes again.

For one brief moment, something in his expression loosened.

Not a smile.

Not quite.

But relief.

Real relief.

He stared at the report.

Then whispered:

“Three.”

Mara nodded.

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“Three came back.”

The Chief’s expression softened.

“Yes.”

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then his eyes moved to the revised total.

Pendants secured: 11.

Pendants unrecovered: 4.

The relief faltered.

He stared at the second number.

Four.

Still four.

Four girls whose Pendants were somewhere beyond Horizon’s reach.

Perhaps buried beneath wreckage.

Perhaps drifting in currents.

Perhaps already lost in deeper water.

Perhaps—

Kade stopped himself.

He couldn’t know.

He would not invent an answer simply because uncertainty frightened him.

Mara watched him.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then spoke gently.

“We have three more than we had before sunrise.”

Kade nodded.

“I know.”

“That matters.”

He looked toward her.

For a moment, the exhaustion in his face became almost painful to see.

Then he answered:

“I know.”

His voice was soft.

He lowered the report.

“Tell the recovery teams they did well.”

Mara nodded.

“I will.”

“And notify the girls who were with them.”

“Yes.”

Kade looked toward the casualty board.

For several seconds, he remained motionless.

Then he reached for a pencil.

He updated the count himself.

Eight became eleven.

Seven became four.

The numbers were smaller.

The loss was not.

He looked toward the three names.

Then slowly set the pencil down.

Mara watched him.

For a moment, she seemed about to say something.

But Kade spoke first.

“Chief.”

“Yes?”

“Can you handle Operations for a little while?”

This narrative has been purloined without the author’s approval. Report any appearances on Amazon.

She blinked.

The question surprised her.

He had barely left the command room since the battle began.

For a moment, she searched his face.

Then answered immediately.

“Of course.”

Kade nodded.

“Thanks.”

He turned toward the door.

Mara watched him go.

Only when he reached the threshold did she speak again.

“Kade.”

He stopped.

Looked back.

Her expression softened.

“Take as long as you need.”

For one moment, he seemed uncertain how to answer.

Then he nodded.

“Right.”

He left.

The door closed behind him.

And Mara remained standing beside the casualty board.

Eleven secured.

Four missing.

Fifteen sunk.

She looked toward the empty chair at the command station.

Then whispered:

“Please rest.”

III. The Girl Who Went Looking

Aster learned about the recovered Pendants while helping Dr. Irena Holt distribute breakfast.

It was a task she had negotiated her way into after losing a considerably less successful argument about returning to combat duty.

Irena had made the conditions exceptionally clear.

No carrying heavy equipment.

No unnecessary strain.

No sudden movements likely to aggravate the injuries she was still recovering from.

And absolutely no attempting to convince the medical staff that feeling better meant she could ignore the rest of her treatment.

Aster had agreed.

Then she’d asked whether she was allowed to carry a tray.

The doctor had stared at her.

Aster had smiled.

And somehow, that had become the morning’s compromise.

Now she stood beside a supply cart with a stack of clean cups, her familiar red ribbon securing her hair and a lightweight cardigan concealing the bandaging beneath her shirt.

The ward was calmer than it had been during the night.

Some of the wounded were sleeping.

Others were receiving fresh dressings.

A pair of exhausted medics sat beside the nurses’ station eating breakfast with the solemn concentration of people who had forgotten food could be pleasurable.

Aster was pouring tea when the recovery announcement reached the medical staff.

Three Pendants identified.

Kiri.

Suzu.

The Yūgumo-class destroyer.

Aster’s hand stopped.

For several seconds, she stared at the cup.

Then she slowly set the kettle down.

“Three?”

The nurse beside her nodded.

“Yes.”

Aster swallowed.

“Kiri and Suzu?”

“And the Yūgumo girl.”

For a moment, the Fletcher-class destroyer closed her eyes.

She remembered Kiri.

Not especially well.

A handful of encounters around the harbor.

A few exchanges over equipment inspections.

The Akizuki-class girl had been the sort who apologized when somebody else bumped into her.

Aster remembered thinking that was adorable.

Now Kiri was gone.

But her Pendant had reached the beach.

Aster opened her eyes.

For several seconds, she looked toward the ward.

Shiori’s bed was near the far wall.

The younger Akizuki-class destroyer was awake.

She’d heard.

Her face had gone still.

Aster approached carefully.

“Shiori?”

The girl looked up.

For a moment, she seemed afraid to ask.

Then whispered:

“Suzu?”

Aster nodded.

“Her Pendant was found.”

Shiori stared.

For several seconds, she didn’t move.

Then her lower lip trembled.

“Really?”

Aster sat beside the bed.

“Really.”

The younger girl looked down.

Her fingers tightened around the blanket.

For one moment, she seemed unable to breathe.

Then she raised both hands to her face.

Aster reached toward her.

The Akizuki caught her hand.

Held it.

And cried.

These tears were different from the ones she’d shed when the loss was first confirmed.

They were still grief.

Still pain.

Still the knowledge that Suzu would not be walking through the medical annex door with stolen breakfast and a ridiculous excuse for why she’d taken so long.

But now there was something else.

Something precious.

The certainty that Suzu’s Pendant was no longer somewhere beneath the waves.

Aster waited.

When Shiori finally lowered her hands, her face was wet.

“Can I see it?”

The Fletcher’s expression softened.

“I think we can ask.”

Shiori swallowed.

“Not now. I know I’m not allowed to get up.”

Aster almost smiled.

“Doctor Holt will be delighted to hear that.”

The younger destroyer gave a tiny, miserable laugh.

Then looked toward the window.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Finally, she whispered:

“Hibari?”

Aster felt her chest tighten.

Shiori looked back.

“Did they find hers too?”

The Fletcher hesitated.

Only briefly.

Then shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Shiori lowered her eyes.

“Oh.”

Aster squeezed her hand.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Shiori whispered:

“It’s not fair.”

Aster looked toward her.

The young destroyer’s eyes filled again.

“Suzu was with Hibari. Hibari tried to save her. She actually got Suzu’s Pendant out of the water.”

Aster nodded.

“I know.”

“And then—”

Shiori stopped.

Her voice broke.

For several seconds, she struggled to continue.

Then whispered:

“And then she didn’t come back either.”

Aster lowered her eyes.

The younger girl looked toward the blanket.

“It isn’t fair that Suzu came back and Hibari didn’t.”

Aster’s throat tightened.

She knew what Shiori meant.

Not that finding Suzu’s Pendant was wrong.

Not that she wished it had remained lost.

Only that relief and sorrow had arrived together, and the heart was not always capable of sorting them neatly.

Aster leaned forward.

Gently, she rested her forehead against Shiori’s.

The Akizuki girl closed her eyes.

For a moment, the two remained like that.

Then Aster whispered:

“No.”

A pause.

“It isn’t.”

She did not offer an explanation.

Some things did not have one.

Aster began looking for Kade shortly afterward.

It wasn’t because anyone had told her to.

Although, as she would later discover, several people had been considering the same idea.

She simply realized that she hadn’t seen him since the night battle ended.

That bothered her.

The Commander had a habit of appearing at the worst possible moments.

He would materialize beside an injured Keelborn with a sarcastic remark and a cup of something warm.

He would turn up in a repair bay to ask Hana how long a task would take, receive an answer he disliked, and immediately begin negotiating as though engineering tolerances were open to debate.

He would visit the training grounds, stand among people twice his size, and somehow manage to look like the most dangerous person present while arguing about safety procedures.

He could be infuriating.

He could be funny.

He could make people feel safe without pretending there was nothing to fear.

And he was almost always moving.

Even when he looked exhausted.

Especially when he looked exhausted.

But Aster hadn’t seen him all morning.

She checked the Operations Room first.

Mara was there.

The Chief of Staff stood beside the western plotting board, reviewing a report with Aaron.

Aster waited until they finished speaking.

Then approached.

“Morning, Chief.”

Mara looked up.

For a moment, her expression softened.

“Aster.”

The Fletcher smiled.

“Everyone behaving?”

Mara glanced toward the report in her hand.

“That would be a first.”

Aster grinned.

Then her expression became more serious.

“Is Kade here?”

The Chief paused.

Only slightly.

But Aster noticed.

“No.”

The Fletcher looked around.

“Office?”

“I don’t believe so.”

“Medical?”

“Not unless somebody has finally persuaded him to submit to an examination.”

Aster smiled faintly.

Then looked toward the command station.

Kade’s chair was empty.

A jacket lay folded over the back.

A half-finished cup of coffee sat near a stack of reports.

The Commander himself was nowhere in sight.

Aster’s expression tightened.

“Has he slept?”

Mara was quiet.

For a moment, that was answer enough.

Then the Chief sighed.

“Not properly.”

Aster looked toward her.

Mara continued.

“He asked me to take over Operations about an hour ago.”

The Fletcher raised an eyebrow.

“He voluntarily left?”

“Yes.”

“Without somebody physically carrying him?”

The Chief gave her a tired look.

“Aster.”

“What? I’m trying to establish whether this is an emergency.”

Despite herself, Mara almost smiled.

Then her expression softened.

“I think he needed to be alone.”

Aster glanced toward the door.

For several seconds, she considered that.

Then asked:

“Do you know where he went?”

Mara shook her head.

“No.”

The Fletcher nodded slowly.

Then looked toward the empty command chair again.

For a moment, she imagined Kade sitting there through the night.

Receiving one casualty report after another.

Watching fifteen names accumulate.

Learning that Maki and Reina were not simply imitations.

Then waking—if he’d slept at all—to the news that three Pendants had washed onto the beach.

Aster swallowed.

“I’ll look for him.”

Mara regarded her carefully.

For several seconds, she didn’t speak.

Then she nodded.

“All right.”

Aster started toward the door.

Then the Chief spoke again.

“Aster.”

The Fletcher stopped.

Looked back.

Mara’s expression had become unusually gentle.

“If you find him…”

She hesitated.

For a moment, the usually decisive woman seemed unable to choose her words.

Then she sighed.

“Just make sure he’s all right.”

Aster’s smile faded.

She nodded.

“I will.”

She checked the main dining hall.

No Kade.

The small conference room near Intelligence.

Empty.

The eastern administration courtyard.

A pair of technicians were sitting there with breakfast, but the Commander was nowhere in sight.

She passed the medical supply building, where Irena was discussing bandage inventory with a nurse.

The doctor asked whether she needed anything.

Aster said no.

Then, after a moment, asked if she’d seen Kade.

Irena’s expression changed.

“No.”

A pause.

“Should I be concerned?”

Aster considered that.

Then smiled faintly.

“Probably not.”

The doctor raised an eyebrow.

The Fletcher sighed.

“I’m just checking.”

Irena regarded her for several seconds.

Then nodded.

“If you find him, remind him that exhaustion is not a medical achievement.”

Aster smiled.

“I’ll quote you exactly.”

“Please do.”

She continued walking.

Past the administration buildings.

Beyond the quieter maintenance road.

Toward the older eastern section of the island.

There was a small observation area near the inner seawall.

It had once been used for weather measurements and harbor navigation exercises.

The main instruments had since been relocated.

A few remained inside a shuttered hut.

The walkway was narrow but safe, protected from the open ocean by a low concrete barrier and separated from the busy service roads by a strip of grass and wind-shaped shrubs.

It wasn’t a place many people visited anymore.

Not when there were newer observation platforms with better equipment.

But Aster remembered Kade going there once.

Months earlier.

After a particularly ugly argument about the station’s readiness.

He’d stood beside the seawall, staring out at the water.

When she’d asked what he was doing, he’d replied that he was attempting to determine whether the Pacific Ocean had any intention of apologizing for being inconvenient.

She’d laughed.

He’d looked offended.

Then she’d stolen half his lunch.

It had been a good afternoon.

Aster found herself walking in that direction without quite deciding to.

The path curved past a stand of palms.

The sounds of the repair district faded.

The air smelled of salt and warm stone.

A gull cried overhead.

Then she saw him.

Kade Bher sat alone on the eastern seawall.

And Aster stopped walking.

Because the Commander looked like hell.

Not merely tired.

Not the ordinary exhaustion she’d grown accustomed to seeing after long days in Operations.

This was different.

His brown hair was uncombed.

His uniform shirt was wrinkled.

The jacket he’d carried from Operations lay folded beside him, untouched.

His sleeves were rolled unevenly to his elbows.

A half-empty bottle of water rested near one foot.

He hadn’t shaved.

His eyes were fixed on the sea, but Aster wasn’t certain he was actually seeing it.

There were shadows beneath them that made his face look drawn and hollow.

The sunlight caught the edges of his windswept hair.

He didn’t move.

For a moment, Aster thought he might be asleep sitting upright.

Then she saw his hand.

Resting against his knee.

Fingers slowly closing.

Opening.

Closing again.

As though he were counting something.

Aster’s chest tightened.

She knew, without asking, what it probably was.

Fifteen.

Eleven.

Four.

And all the numbers in between.

The Fletcher stood at the end of the walkway.

For several seconds, she simply watched him.

Her Commander.

The person who had kept Horizon together through disasters that should have destroyed it.

The boy who could grin at a battleship twice his size and tell her to stop arguing with the maintenance staff.

The person who made difficult decisions and then stayed awake worrying about the people affected by them.

She’d seen him angry.

Exhausted.

Amused.

Furious.

Sarcastic.

Even frightened, although he’d usually hidden that beneath a particularly irritating remark.

But she’d never seen him look quite so empty.

Aster swallowed.

Then approached.

Slowly.

She did not call out immediately.

The sound of her footsteps on the concrete was enough.

Kade’s head shifted.

Only slightly.

He’d heard her.

Of course he had.

Even half-dead on his feet, the man seemed incapable of being properly surprised.

Aster stopped beside him.

For a moment, she looked out at the sea.

Then down at him.

“Hey.”

Kade blinked.

His eyes moved toward her.

For a second, he seemed to be pulling himself back from somewhere very far away.

Then his mouth shifted.

“Aster.”

His voice was rough.

Not from shouting.

From exhaustion.

She tried a small smile.

“Found you.”

He looked toward the walkway.

Then back at the sea.

“Apparently.”

The sarcasm was there.

Barely.

Aster’s smile softened.

For several seconds, she remained standing.

Then she looked toward the empty space beside him.

“Mind if I sit?”

Kade blinked.

For a moment, he seemed confused by the question.

Then he glanced toward the wall.

“It’s public property.”

Aster raised an eyebrow.

“That a yes?”

He exhaled.

“That’s a yes.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

The Fletcher carefully lowered herself onto the seawall beside him, minding the injuries that still made certain movements uncomfortable.

The concrete was warm from the morning sunlight.

A gentle breeze moved through her red hair.

The lagoon stretched before them.

Blue.

Quiet.

Almost unbearably peaceful.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Aster looked toward the water.

Kade continued staring at the horizon.

The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.

Not yet.

But she could feel how far away he seemed.

As though he were sitting beside her physically while some other part of him remained trapped in Operations.

Still listening to the radio.

Still counting.

Still waiting for a voice that would not answer.

She glanced toward him.

His hand closed again.

Then opened.

Aster swallowed.

She had intended to ask whether he was okay.

But the answer was obvious.

She’d thought about telling him he needed rest.

That was equally obvious.

She’d considered making a joke.

Usually that worked.

Usually Kade would take the bait, and within a minute they’d be arguing about something absurd.

But looking at him now, she couldn’t quite bring herself to do it.

Instead, she thought of something much simpler.

Maybe…

She hesitated.

Maybe some human contact would help.

The idea felt almost embarrassingly small.

After everything that had happened, what could leaning against somebody possibly accomplish?

It wouldn’t bring back the girls who had sunk.

It wouldn’t repair their rigging.

It wouldn’t locate four missing Pendants.

It certainly wouldn’t make the Blackwake Princesses disappear.

But Aster remembered what it had felt like to wake up injured, frightened, and uncertain whether she was ever going to stand in her rigging again.

She remembered how much it had helped when somebody sat beside her.

Not to solve anything.

Just to be there.

She looked toward Kade.

Then, very carefully, shifted closer.

Her shoulder touched his.

He didn’t move.

For one second, she wondered whether he’d noticed.

Then she leaned gently against him.

Not hard enough to hurt either of them.

Just enough for him to feel her weight.

Her warmth.

The quiet certainty of another person beside him.

Kade went rigid.

Aster felt it immediately.

His shoulder tightened.

His breathing stopped for half a beat.

The muscles along his arm tensed.

For one awful moment, she thought she’d made a mistake.

That he didn’t want to be touched.

That she’d intruded on something private.

She began pulling away.

“Sorry, I—”

Then his arm moved.

Not away from her.

Around her.

He reached behind her shoulders and drew her closer.

Firmly.

Carefully.

As though he’d been holding something up for so long that he’d forgotten how to accept support until somebody offered it.

Aster stopped.

Her eyes widened.

For one moment, she didn’t know what to do.

Then she felt him exhale.

A long, uneven breath.

His shoulder lowered.

The rigid tension in his body eased, just a little.

And his arm remained around her.

Aster’s expression softened.

Oh.

She slowly settled against him again.

This time without hesitation.

Her head rested near his shoulder.

One hand came to rest lightly against his sleeve.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

The gulls cried overhead.

A small wave struck the inner seawall.

The morning breeze shifted through the palms.

And Kade Bher, Commander of Horizon Atoll, held a wounded Fletcher-class destroyer close as though her presence was the first thing all morning that made sense.

Aster closed her eyes.

It helps.

The thought surprised her.

Not because she’d doubted he cared.

But because she’d never seen him allow himself to need something so ordinary.

She smiled faintly.

Good.

She stayed where she was.

And, for a little while, the two of them watched the sea together.

IV. The Things He Hadn’t Said

It was a long time before either of them spoke again.

Aster wasn’t sure how long.

Five minutes, perhaps.

Maybe ten.

Time seemed less important here than it had in Operations, where every second had been measured against ammunition expenditure, approach bearings, and the distance between incoming torpedoes and frightened girls.

Here, the seconds passed without demanding anything.

A breeze moved across the seawall.

Somewhere below, water lapped against the stones.

The sun warmed Aster’s knees.

Kade’s arm remained around her shoulders.

Occasionally, his hand shifted slightly against the fabric of her cardigan.

Not fidgeting.

More like he was checking that she was still there.

She didn’t mind.

If anything, the small movement made her feel strangely protective of him.

That was ridiculous, she thought.

Kade could be one of the most intimidating people she’d ever met when he wanted to be.

He was the Commander of an entire naval installation.

He could argue strategy with battleship girls, refuse the demands of hostile captains, and make people twice his age reconsider their choices with a single raised eyebrow.

He had faced the Pacific Campaign Authority.

He had watched a rogue Iowa-class battleship threaten his home.

He had ordered his fleet into battle against enemies that shouldn’t have existed.

And somehow, here he was, sitting beside her with one arm around her shoulders, looking as though the effort of keeping himself upright might be more than he could comfortably manage.

Aster swallowed.

For a moment, she stared at his hand.

Then she spoke quietly.

“You look terrible.”

Kade’s head shifted.

A pause.

Then his voice came.

“That’s encouraging.”

She smiled faintly.

“I’m known for my bedside manner.”

“You’re not a doctor.”

“Thank goodness.”

A beat.

Then she added:

“Doctor Holt would probably fire me.”

Kade made a sound.

Not quite a laugh.

More a faint breath of amusement.

Aster felt something warm stir in her chest.

She kept her head against his shoulder.

“Seriously, though.”

He looked toward the sea.

“Mm?”

“When did you last sleep?”

Kade considered the question.

For a moment, he seemed genuinely unable to answer.

Then he said:

“Define sleep.”

Aster closed her eyes.

“Oh, we’re doing this.”

He shifted slightly.

“Doing what?”

“The thing where you pretend a very simple question is philosophically complicated.”

“It’s a complicated world.”

“Kade.”

“Aster.”

She lifted her head just enough to look at him.

He finally turned toward her.

His steel-blue eyes were tired.

So tired.

And despite the familiar sarcasm, she could see that every reply cost him effort.

Her expression softened.

“Have you slept at all?”

He looked away.

For several seconds, he didn’t answer.

Then:

“A little.”

Aster raised an eyebrow.

“An actual little?”

He sighed.

“Something resembling it.”

“While sitting in a chair?”

A pause.

“That counts.”

“No, it doesn’t.”

“I object.”

“Objection denied.”

He glanced toward her.

For one moment, the corner of his mouth moved.

Then his expression settled again.

Aster watched it happen.

The small smile disappearing.

The exhaustion returning.

The invisible weight settling back onto his shoulders.

She lowered her head against him.

“All right.”

Kade blinked.

“All right?”

“I’ll stop interrogating you.”

“That would be a first.”

She gave him a very gentle nudge with her shoulder.

“Don’t ruin my generosity.”

Another faint breath of amusement.

Then silence.

Aster closed her eyes.

For a while, she simply listened to him breathe.

The rhythm was uneven at first.

Too shallow.

Occasionally interrupted by a sigh that seemed to begin somewhere deep in his chest.

But gradually, it slowed.

His arm remained warm around her.

And the rigid tension she’d felt when she first leaned against him continued easing.

Not disappearing.

Nothing was going to make it disappear in a single morning.

But easing.

Aster thought that was enough.

Kade had forgotten what it felt like to sit still without waiting for something terrible to happen.

That realization annoyed him.

Not because it was inaccurate.

Because it was accurate enough that he couldn’t dismiss it.

He’d spent so much of the previous night listening to reports that his thoughts had begun sorting themselves into categories without his permission.

Damage.

Fuel.

Ammunition.

Casualties.

Recovery.

Unknown contacts.

Missing personnel.

Confirmed losses.

And now, even with the Blackwake beyond the local surveillance boundary, his mind continued running through the same sequence.

Was the northern approach adequately covered?

Had the coastal batteries received enough ammunition?

Was the damaged Chapayev-class cruiser still being watched?

Had Tribal’s crew been properly examined?

Were the recovered Pendants secure?

Had anybody followed up on the wounded Akizuki who survived the deck-gun hit?

Were there enough antibiotics?

Enough spare hydraulic seals?

Enough food?

Enough people?

Enough time?

The questions arrived one after another.

He knew most had been delegated.

Mara was handling Operations.

Aaron was managing the intelligence picture.

Hana had the repair schedules.

Irena had Medical.

Corwin had supplies.

Dain had engineering.

Victor had communications.

They were competent.

More than competent.

He trusted them.

And still his mind refused to stop.

Then Aster had leaned against him.

And something had happened that he hadn’t expected.

For half a second, the contact had startled him.

Not because he disliked it.

Because he’d been so far inside his own thoughts that another person’s warmth felt almost unfamiliar.

His body had reacted before his mind caught up.

Then he’d realized who it was.

Aster.

Red hair.

Red ribbon.

Fletcher-class destroyer.

Currently under strict medical restrictions.

A girl who could turn an ordinary conversation into an argument over nothing and somehow make him enjoy losing.

She hadn’t asked him to justify his decisions.

Hadn’t demanded a recovery plan.

Hadn’t asked whether the missing Pendants could still be found.

She’d simply sat beside him.

Then leaned close.

He’d pulled her against him almost without deciding to.

And now—

Now, for the first time since the night battle ended, he wasn’t thinking about ammunition every second.

He could feel the breeze.

The sunlight.

The warmth of the girl beside him.

The small, living movement of her breathing.

It did not make the dead return.

It did not undo the battle.

But it reminded him that the world contained something other than things he needed to prevent from breaking.

He swallowed.

Then looked toward the horizon.

Aster shifted slightly.

“Penny for your thoughts?”

Kade blinked.

He glanced down at her.

“Inflation.”

She looked up.

“What?”

“My thoughts cost more than a penny.”

Aster stared.

Then sighed dramatically.

“Terrible customer service.”

“I have excellent customer service.”

“You have the bedside manner of an angry sea mine.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

“Sea mines don’t have bedside manners.”

“Exactly.”

For one moment, he smiled.

A real one.

Small.

Tired.

But real.

Aster felt it through the way his posture changed.

She smiled too.

Then she looked back toward the water.

For several seconds, she was quiet.

Finally, she spoke.

“I heard about the Pendants.”

Kade’s smile disappeared.

Not sharply.

Not because she shouldn’t have mentioned them.

Simply because the names were never far away.

He nodded.

“Three.”

Aster swallowed.

“Kiri. Suzu. Yūgumo.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward his hands.

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then spoke.

“I changed the board myself.”

Aster looked up.

Kade continued.

“Eight to eleven.”

A pause.

“Seven to four.”

The Fletcher nodded slowly.

“That’s good.”

Kade looked toward the horizon.

“Yeah.”

The word was almost a whisper.

For a moment, Aster wondered whether he would say anything more.

Then he continued.

“It’s good.”

Another pause.

“But every time I look at the number…”

He stopped.

His jaw tightened.

Aster waited.

Kade swallowed.

“I keep seeing the other four.”

She lowered her eyes.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Aster said gently:

“I know.”

He shook his head.

“No, I mean…”

His voice faltered.

Not dramatically.

He simply seemed unable to find the words.

Then he looked toward the water.

“Eight wasn’t enough. Eleven isn’t enough. I could get another one back tomorrow and I’d still be thinking about the three that weren’t there.”

Aster’s throat tightened.

Kade continued.

“And it isn’t because I’m not glad.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“I am.”

His arm tightened slightly around her.

“I am, Aster.”

“I believe you.”

He looked down.

For a moment, his expression was almost desperate.

Not for forgiveness.

For understanding.

“Those three girls…”

He stopped.

Swallowed.

Then continued.

“Kiri died protecting a rescue craft. Suzu and Hibari were trying to keep each other alive. Yūgumo went down after protecting another destroyer.”

His voice became quieter.

“They weren’t doing anything wrong.”

Aster’s eyes softened.

“No.”

“They were doing exactly what we needed them to do.”

A pause.

“And they’re gone.”

The Fletcher swallowed.

For several seconds, she didn’t answer.

Then she looked out at the water.

A wave broke against the stones below.

Foam spread.

Retreated.

Left the rocks wet and shining.

Aster watched it.

Then spoke quietly.

“They made choices.”

Kade looked toward her.

She continued.

“Kiri chose to help that recovery craft. Yūgumo chose to protect the other girl. Suzu chose to cover Hibari.”

He lowered his eyes.

“They did.”

Aster nodded.

“That doesn’t make it less awful.”

“No.”

“And it doesn’t mean you don’t have to think about what happened.”

He looked up.

For a moment, she met his eyes.

Then she said:

“But don’t turn their choices into something they had no say in.”

Kade went still.

Aster swallowed.

She hadn’t intended to sound so serious.

But now the words had come, she wanted to finish.

“They trusted you.”

He looked away.

“And I sent them out.”

“Yes.”

The answer surprised him.

He turned back.

Aster’s expression remained gentle.

“You did.”

For several seconds, she held his gaze.

Then continued.

“You were their Commander. You gave the orders. I know that matters.”

Kade said nothing.

“But they weren’t pieces on your map.”

His jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“They were girls who could decide what they wanted to protect.”

A pause.

“And you taught us that.”

Kade stared.

For a moment, he couldn’t answer.

Aster continued quietly.

“Maybe you don’t get to forget that part just because you’re hurting.”

The words settled between them.

Kade lowered his eyes.

For several seconds, he remained completely still.

Then he exhaled.

Slowly.

“You know…”

Aster raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“You’re annoyingly perceptive sometimes.”

She smiled faintly.

“It’s one of my many attractive qualities.”

He huffed.

“Debatable.”

“Rude.”

The silence returned.

But it was different now.

Less brittle.

Less afraid of being broken.

Kade looked toward the water.

For a moment, he thought of the girls who had died.

He did not stop feeling responsible for them.

Aster hadn’t asked him to.

She had simply reminded him that responsibility was not the same thing as ownership over every outcome.

He swallowed.

Then said quietly:

“Thanks.”

Aster smiled.

“Anytime.”

She settled against him again.

His arm remained around her shoulders.

And the ocean continued moving beneath the morning sun.

After a while, Kade spoke again.

“There’s something I keep thinking about.”

Aster turned slightly.

“Mm?”

“Maki.”

The Fletcher went still.

Then nodded.

“And Reina?”

“Yeah.”

For a moment, he looked toward the distant western horizon.

The Blackwake had gone that way.

Beyond the island.

Beyond the immediate surveillance limit.

Toward the Mid-Pacific territories that remained under enemy control.

He stared.

“They weren’t new girls.”

Aster swallowed.

“No.”

“They were new enemies.”

A pause.

“But not new girls.”

She lowered her eyes.

Kade continued.

“I keep going over the Halcyon records.”

He stared at the water.

“Camille’s account. The damage reports. The circumstances of the sinking. The last known positions.”

Aster listened.

“The Blackwake didn’t just build something that looked like them.”

His voice became quieter.

“Maki had her Pendant.”

Aster swallowed.

She remembered hearing the report.

The Takao-class girl seeing that little silver object embedded within the corrupted aviation-cruiser Princess’s rigging.

For a moment, Aster had hoped the photograph had been mistaken.

Not because she wanted to dismiss the witness.

But because the alternative was horrifying.

Kade looked down.

“And Reina’s Pendant never came back from Halcyon.”

A pause.

“So what happened to them beneath the water?”

Aster was quiet.

For several seconds, she considered the question.

Then answered honestly.

“I don’t know.”

Kade nodded.

“Neither do I.”

The Fletcher looked toward him.

He continued.

“Were they conscious? Did they understand what was happening? Did the Blackwake change them all at once? Did they resist?”

His voice tightened.

“Do they remember who they are?”

Aster felt cold.

The morning sun suddenly seemed very far away.

She thought of Maki’s white flowers.

Reina’s red eyes.

The monstrous machinery.

The empty spaces where the girls from Halcyon should have been.

Then she looked toward Kade.

“We don’t know.”

He nodded.

Aster swallowed.

“Maybe…”

She stopped.

For a moment, she seemed frightened of what she was about to say.

Then continued.

“Maybe there’s still something of them.”

Kade looked toward her.

The Fletcher held his gaze.

“I don’t mean that we can definitely bring them back.”

He nodded slowly.

“I know.”

“And I don’t know how.”

Another pause.

“But if those are really the girls who sank…”

She looked toward the sea.

“…then I don’t want to decide they’re beyond saving before we even understand what happened.”

For several seconds, Kade said nothing.

Then he nodded.

“Neither do I.”

His voice was very quiet.

Aster lowered her head against his shoulder.

The two remained silent.

Four Pendants were still missing from the latest battle.

And, somewhere beyond the western horizon, two girls who had once possessed names and homes were moving toward Blackwake-controlled waters.

The thought was terrible.

But here, beside the seawall, Aster felt something else.

Determination.

Not certainty.

Not a promise that everything could be fixed.

Just the refusal to treat unanswered questions as already settled.

She closed her eyes.

For the moment, that was enough.

 V. He Didn’t Cry

Aster had wondered about Kade before.

More often than she admitted.

Everyone at Horizon knew their Commander was unusual.

That wasn’t an insult.

It was almost impossible to spend any significant amount of time around him without noticing.

He was eighteen.

Eighteen.

There were sailors on Breakwater who had served in their world’s armed forces longer than Kade had been alive.

There were engineers with decades of experience, officers with distinguished careers, and veteran former players who had spent years mastering the original game.

Yet when something went wrong, people looked toward Kade.

Not always because he knew more than they did.

He often didn’t.

He asked questions.

Listened to specialists.

Changed his plans when new information arrived.

And occasionally admitted he had absolutely no idea what was happening.

But when a decision had to be made, he made it.

When somebody needed help, he appeared.

When people were frightened, he stood with them.

And when a situation became terrible enough that everyone else began wondering how to survive it, Kade somehow continued moving.

Aster had seen him do it too many times to count.

She’d also seen the cost.

The exhaustion he tried to conceal.

The way he grew quieter after casualty reports.

The tension in his shoulders when a medical emergency arrived.

The private moments when he stared at the horizon with an expression she couldn’t understand.

Sometimes she wondered whether he’d simply been born with an extraordinary capacity to endure things.

Other times she wondered whether he’d learned it.

And if he’d learned it—

What on earth happened to you?

The thought slipped into her mind before she could stop it.

She looked toward him.

Kade’s eyes were fixed on the water.

He wasn’t crying.

Not even a little.

His expression was tired.

His jaw tightened occasionally.

His breathing sometimes caught when he mentioned one of the lost girls.

But his eyes remained dry.

Aster didn’t know how.

She had cried last night.

Not in public.

Not where the younger Keelborn could see her.

But in the medical annex, after learning that several girls she’d eaten with were missing, she’d turned toward the wall and cried into her pillow until she was too tired to continue.

Shiori had cried.

Hibari had cried before she sank.

Takao One had cried while handing over her sister’s Pendant.

Even the nurses had cried, briefly, in corners where they thought nobody could see.

Kade hadn’t.

At least, not that anyone knew.

He had received the reports.

Counted the names.

Changed the defensive orders.

Asked for medical supplies.

And continued commanding.

Now he sat beside Aster with an arm around her shoulders, looking so exhausted that she was beginning to worry he might collapse if he stood too quickly.

Yet still no tears came.

For a moment, she considered asking him why.

Then she decided against it.

She didn’t want him to feel as though he needed to perform grief correctly.

Crying wasn’t proof of caring.

And not crying wasn’t proof of strength.

Perhaps his tears simply hadn’t come.

Perhaps they never would.

Perhaps something inside him was holding them back because he still believed there would be another emergency the moment he let go.

Whatever the reason, Aster didn’t need to know it today.

She just wanted him to stop being alone.

So she shifted slightly closer.

Kade noticed.

His arm adjusted around her shoulders.

Then he spoke.

“You’re going to aggravate your injuries if you keep twisting like that.”

Aster blinked.

For a moment, she stared at him.

Then slowly raised her head.

“Excuse me?”

He looked toward her.

“Your side.”

She narrowed her eyes.

“My side?”

“You’re still recovering.”

Aster stared.

For several seconds, she appeared genuinely speechless.

Then she sighed.

“Oh, that’s rich.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“Absolutely magnificent.”

He looked confused.

Aster sat up just enough to meet his eyes.

“You are currently a walking medical warning label.”

He blinked.

She continued.

“You’ve been awake for approximately forever, you look like somebody dragged you backward through an engine room, and I strongly suspect you haven’t eaten breakfast.”

Kade opened his mouth.

Aster raised one finger.

“And you’re worried about my injuries?”

He considered that.

For a moment, he seemed to be searching for an argument.

Then he answered:

“Yes.”

Aster stared.

Then covered her face with one hand.

“Oh, you’re impossible.”

Kade’s expression softened.

“I’ve been told.”

She lowered her hand.

For a second, she wanted to scold him.

Then she saw how tired he looked.

The frustration vanished.

Aster sighed.

Gently, she rested her head against his shoulder again.

“Fine.”

Kade blinked.

“Fine?”

“I’ll be careful.”

A pause.

“Will you?”

He looked toward the sea.

For a moment, he didn’t answer.

Then quietly:

“I’ll try.”

Aster nodded.

“Good.”

She let the silence settle.

A few seconds passed.

Then Kade spoke again.

“You really shouldn’t be walking this far.”

Aster closed her eyes.

“Kade.”

“What?”

“I am going to bite you.”

He stared.

For a moment, his expression became almost comically offended.

Then he laughed.

A small laugh.

Brief.

But unmistakable.

Aster felt it.

The movement of his shoulders.

The change in his breathing.

The way the sound escaped before he could hide it behind another sarcastic comment.

She smiled.

There you are.

Kade shook his head.

“You’re ridiculous.”

“Thank you.”

“That wasn’t a compliment.”

“I’ve decided it was.”

He sighed.

She grinned.

And for a moment, the horrible morning loosened its grip.

Aster eventually reached into her cardigan pocket.

Kade looked down.

“What are you doing?”

“Preparing an assassination attempt.”

He blinked.

She removed a paper-wrapped bread roll.

Held it up.

“Behold.”

Kade stared.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to think of anything to say.

Then:

“That’s bread.”

Aster nodded solemnly.

“Very observant.”

“Should I be impressed?”

“Yes.”

He glanced toward the roll.

Then toward her.

“Why do you have bread in your pocket?”

“Because I possess foresight.”

“You possess a suspicious amount of stolen food.”

“Allegedly stolen.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

Aster grinned.

Then her expression softened.

“I brought it for you.”

He stopped.

For a moment, he looked toward the roll.

Then toward her face.

“Me?”

She nodded.

“Mm-hm.”

“You didn’t know where I was.”

“I knew I’d find you.”

He stared.

The certainty in her voice seemed to catch him off guard.

Aster unwrapped the bread.

It was still slightly warm.

A little flattened from the journey.

But perfectly edible.

She offered it.

Kade looked down.

For several seconds, he didn’t move.

Then he accepted it.

“Thanks.”

Aster smiled.

“You’re welcome.”

He took a bite.

Chewed.

Swallowed.

Then looked toward her.

“You know, if the Navy ever gets tired of you, there’s probably a career in smuggling.”

Aster gasped.

“How dare you.”

“I’m serious.”

“I am an upstanding Fletcher-class destroyer.”

“Who carries contraband breakfast.”

“Emergency provisions.”

“Unregistered.”

“Morale supplies.”

Kade shook his head.

Aster looked extremely pleased with herself.

He took another bite.

Then another.

And, despite everything, realized he was hungry.

Very hungry.

The bread wasn’t nearly enough to constitute breakfast.

But it gave him something simple to do.

Something that required no report.

No signature.

No decision affecting someone’s survival.

Just eat.

Aster watched him without comment.

Only when he’d finished did she speak.

“Better?”

Kade considered the question.

Then nodded.

“A little.”

Her smile softened.

“Good.”

He looked toward the sea.

For several seconds, he remained quiet.

Then he spoke.

“You didn’t have to come looking for me.”

Aster blinked.

For a moment, she seemed surprised.

Then she looked toward him.

“I know.”

He lowered his eyes.

“You’re supposed to be resting.”

“I know that too.”

He considered the answer.

Then frowned faintly.

“You’re not going to make this easy, are you?”

Aster smiled.

“Nope.”

Kade sighed.

She leaned against him again.

For several seconds, they watched the sea.

Then she spoke very softly.

“Kade?”

“Mm?”

“I wanted to.”

He looked toward her.

Aster kept her eyes on the water.

“I wanted to find you.”

A pause.

“That’s all.”

The Commander went still.

For one moment, he seemed unable to answer.

Then his arm tightened around her shoulders.

Just slightly.

Aster closed her eyes.

She felt the movement.

And smiled.

 The morning continued.

The sun rose higher.

The shadows along the walkway shortened.

Somewhere behind them, a utility truck drove along the eastern service road.

Its engine hummed briefly before disappearing beyond the palms.

Neither Kade nor Aster moved.

The Fletcher had begun wondering whether he might actually fall asleep sitting there.

Then Kade spoke.

“Aster?”

She opened her eyes.

“Yeah?”

“Do you know what scares me?”

Her expression changed.

For a moment, she looked toward him.

Then answered quietly.

“What?”

Kade stared at the horizon.

For several seconds, he remained silent.

Then:

“Getting used to it.”

Aster swallowed.

He continued.

“The reports.”

A pause.

“The names.”

His voice tightened.

“I know there’ll be more casualties. I’m not stupid. We’ve been at war since the Crisis started, and whatever this is becoming, it’s not going to stop because we ask nicely.”

The Fletcher listened.

Kade looked down.

“But I don’t ever want to reach a point where I see fifteen girls sunk and think it’s just another number.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then he continued.

“I don’t want to look at a Pendant and see a resource.”

His jaw tightened.

“Or look at a damaged girl and start calculating whether she’s worth repairing.”

Aster’s expression became pained.

Kade swallowed.

“That’s what the PCA did.”

A pause.

“Not all of them. But enough.”

He looked toward the water.

“And they made it sound reasonable.”

For several seconds, the wind was the only sound.

Then Aster spoke quietly.

“You won’t.”

Kade looked toward her.

The Fletcher met his eyes.

For a moment, she seemed uncertain how to explain what she meant.

Then she continued.

“Not because you’re incapable of making mistakes.”

He lowered his eyes.

“And not because you’re some perfect Commander who always knows the right answer.”

A faint, exhausted smile touched his mouth.

“Good. That would be a depressing standard.”

Aster almost smiled.

Then she became serious again.

“You ask their names.”

Kade went still.

She continued.

“When somebody gets hurt, you ask who it was. Not just their class. Not just whether their guns are still working.”

Her voice softened.

“You want to know who’s missing.”

A pause.

“You remember us.”

Kade looked toward her.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Aster continued.

“And if you ever stop…”

She hesitated.

Then shrugged slightly.

“I’ll remind you.”

He blinked.

She smiled faintly.

“Loudly.”

For a moment, he stared.

Then she added:

“Probably with physical violence.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

“You’re threatening your commanding officer?”

“I’m offering a valuable accountability service.”

“Sounds expensive.”

“Very.”

A pause.

Then she smiled.

“Payment accepted in snacks and reasonable working hours.”

Kade stared.

Then laughed again.

Not loudly.

Not for long.

But enough.

Aster’s smile became warm.

The Commander looked toward her.

For one moment, his expression softened in a way she had rarely seen.

Then he spoke quietly.

“You’d really do that?”

The Fletcher tilted her head.

“Remind you?”

He nodded.

She looked almost offended.

“Of course.”

For several seconds, she held his gaze.

Then added:

“That’s what we’re here for.”

Kade lowered his eyes.

For a moment, he seemed to be thinking about something much older than the battle.

Something Aster couldn’t see.

Then he nodded.

“Right.”

She leaned against him.

His arm settled more securely around her.

And the two remained together.

Aster didn’t know how he endured it.

She suspected nobody did.

Not Mara.

Not Aaron.

Not Hana.

Not Scarlett.

Not even the girls who had known him longest.

They knew how he behaved.

They knew he could make difficult decisions.

They knew he kept working when he should have been sleeping.

They knew he could be frighteningly calm in emergencies.

But knowing what somebody did was not the same thing as knowing how much it cost.

Aster looked toward him.

His eyes were still dry.

There were no tears on his cheeks.

No dramatic collapse.

No great speech about the burden of command.

Just an exhausted eighteen-year-old sitting beside the sea, holding a wounded destroyer girl close because she’d leaned against him and he’d discovered he didn’t want her to move away.

For a moment, Aster felt something ache beneath her ribs that had nothing to do with her injuries.

How long have you been doing this?

She wanted to ask.

How long have you been carrying everything like that?

But she didn’t.

Not today.

Instead, she placed her hand over his.

His fingers moved beneath hers.

Then turned slightly.

And held on.

Aster smiled.

All right.

She let her eyes close.

We can start with this.

VI. The People Who Came Back in Silver

Elsewhere on the island, the news of the three recovered Pendants was traveling through the surviving fleet.

It reached Asashio while she was sitting in the medical assessment room.

The destroyer had been ordered to remain ashore for a complete inspection.

She disliked that order.

But for once, she hadn’t argued.

Her equipment was damaged.

Her body ached.

And every time she closed her eyes, she saw Yūgumo sinking beneath the water.

The younger girl reaching toward her.

The little silver Pendant drifting away.

Her own fingers closing on nothing.

Asashio had replayed those moments so many times that she could barely remember what happened afterward.

She remembered the wounded Akizuki asking her not to leave.

She remembered turning back.

She remembered continuing the withdrawal.

But the rest of the night felt like a collection of broken images.

Gun flashes.

Smoke.

Cold water.

A distant explosion.

Yūgumo’s voice.

Sorry.

That one word returned whenever she tried to sleep.

Now Asashio sat on an examination bed, staring at the floor.

A nurse had brought her breakfast.

She hadn’t touched it.

Then someone knocked.

Asashio looked up.

An administrative officer entered carrying a small document case.

“May I come in?”

The destroyer nodded.

“Yes.”

The woman approached.

For a moment, she seemed uncertain how to begin.

Then she sat opposite Asashio.

“We’ve recovered a Pendant from the western beach.”

The destroyer went still.

Her eyes widened.

For one moment, she couldn’t breathe.

The officer continued.

“It has been identified.”

Asashio swallowed.

Her hands tightened around the blanket.

Then she whispered:

“Who?”

The woman opened the document case.

A photograph rested inside.

The Pendant.

Cleaned.

Secured.

Its identification markings clearly visible.

The officer looked toward Asashio.

“The Yūgumo-class girl who was with you.”

For several seconds, Asashio stared.

Then she reached toward the photograph.

Her fingers stopped just above it.

She looked toward the officer.

“Are you sure?”

The woman nodded.

“Yes.”

Asashio swallowed.

“Not just…”

Her voice trembled.

“Not something that looks like hers?”

The officer’s expression softened.

“We checked the markings and registry. It’s hers.”
