Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

I. The Sea Has No Roads

On the third morning, Sakura Nagase discovered that the ocean had changed color again.

She wasn’t sure when it had happened.

Yesterday, the water had been a deep, brilliant blue, darkening almost to violet where the clouds cast their shadows.

Today it seemed brighter.

Clearer.

A rich blue-green that caught the early sunlight in long, shifting ribbons.

Sakura stood at the forward control position of her Senko Maru rigging, watching the light move across the surface.

Behind her, three cargo pontoons followed in their accustomed line.

The first rose over a long swell.

Its articulated connection adjusted.

The second climbed the same swell a few moments later.

Then the third.

Three dark floating structures, each carrying cargo spaces, machinery, or little rooms where her friends could rest.

Their wakes stretched away behind the convoy.

Sakura smiled.

“Good morning.”

The ocean did not answer.

A warm breeze moved through her brown ponytail.

She considered that a perfectly acceptable response.

For a little while, she watched the water.

No islands.

No coast.

No towers or buildings.

Nothing to suggest that people had ever inhabited this part of the world.

Only the enormous Pacific, spreading away in every direction beneath a sky that seemed impossibly high.

There was something wonderfully humbling about it.

Sakura had spent years studying maps.

She knew where Horizon Atoll lay.

She knew where Summit Key lay.

She could identify Resolute Shoals, the Echoing Wastes, and most of the major human-controlled maritime corridors without looking at a chart.

She knew the approximate distances between them.

But a map was a strange thing.

It made the ocean appear manageable.

A stretch of blue paper.

A line drawn between two points.

A number printed beside a route.

A person could look at a chart and forget that every little centimeter represented miles upon miles of open water.

Actual waves.

Actual weather.

Actual darkness.

And places where a ship could sail for days without seeing land.

Sakura looked toward the eastern horizon.

Somewhere beyond it waited Summit Key.

A major human fortress.

An escort rendezvous.

A place where the convoy could verify its onward route and coordinate the passage toward Resolute Shoals.

Farther still waited Mei Takahara.

And the restoration components.

Sakura drew a slow breath.

Then smiled again.

“Still a long way to go.”

Her equipment hummed steadily.

The cargo pontoons followed.

She glanced toward the coupling indicators.

All within limits.

The transit speed remained consistent with the convoy plan.

The pontoons were properly trimmed for their relatively light outbound load.

The propulsion machinery had settled into an efficient operating condition, and the auxiliary positioning systems required only occasional corrections.

Sakura rested one hand against the forward control housing.

It was warm from the machinery beneath.

Comfortingly warm.

She loved that feeling.

Not because Senko Maru was invulnerable.

She knew better.

A transport was a complicated arrangement of useful compromises.

Cargo capacity in exchange for greater size.

Efficient cruising in exchange for rapid acceleration.

Living and storage compartments in exchange for heavy armor.

And a tow arrangement that made sudden maneuvering much more difficult than it would be for a destroyer.

But it was her arrangement.

Her ship.

Her responsibility.

She understood it in ways she’d once only imagined.

The movement of the first pontoon reached her as a subtle change in loading.

A small tension through the forward connection.

Then a response from the auxiliary control system.

The second pontoon followed without difficulty.

The third moved through slightly disturbed water and settled back into alignment.

Nothing needed correcting.

Sakura smiled.

“That’s my girls.”

A voice answered over the short-range circuit.

“Are you talking to the pontoons again?”

Sakura blinked.

Then looked toward the portside escort position.

Emi was watching her.

The Benson-class destroyer wore an expression of enormous satisfaction.

Sakura sighed.

“Good morning, Emi.”

“Good morning, Sakura.”

A pause.

Then the destroyer grinned.

“You didn’t answer the question.”

Sakura looked toward the pontoons.

Then back at Emi.

“Maybe.”

The Benson laughed.

“That’s adorable.”

Sakura narrowed her eyes.

“You were talking to your torpedo mount yesterday.”

Emi went still.

There was a brief silence.

Then:

“That was different.”

“How?”

“It was being difficult.”

Sakura smiled sweetly.

“So were my pontoons.”

Emi opened her mouth.

Stopped.

Then sighed.

“I hate it when you make sense.”

The transport girl laughed.

For a moment, the morning became pleasantly ordinary.

Two friends making jokes over a quiet sea.

Then Harper’s voice entered the convoy circuit.

“Lantern Road, Escort Commander. Morning status check.”

The amusement faded into professional attention.

Sakura straightened.

The battleship continued.

“Report readiness in station order.”

Noelle answered first.

“Antiaircraft screen ready. No unusual air contacts. Directors and communications functioning normally.”

Alice followed.

“Acoustic watch ready. No identified hostile underwater contacts. Background conditions stable.”

Emi:

“Close escort ready. All systems normal.”

Kagerō:

“Outer screen ready. No surface contacts of concern.”

Sakura checked her equipment.

The pontoons.

Cargo locks.

Propulsion.

Power distribution.

Environmental systems.

Then raised her microphone.

“Senko Maru ready. Three pontoons secure, all coupling loads normal, no cargo movement or mechanical faults reported.”

Harper acknowledged.

“Heavy escort ready. Maintain assigned course and watch rotation.”

The convoy returned to its morning rhythm.

Six girls.

One transport.

Five escorts.

A modest formation in an enormous ocean.

Sakura looked toward the horizon.

Then, for a moment, her expression softened.

It still astonished her that those girls were here.

Harper, whose battleship could throw shells heavier than some small vehicles.

Noelle, surrounded by dual-purpose guns and careful calculations.

Alice, listening to things the rest of them couldn’t hear.

Emi, irrepressible and occasionally disastrous in a kitchen.

Kagerō, quiet and determined, still learning how to live with the choices that had brought her to Horizon.

They were protecting her.

A transport.

A girl whose largest compartments were designed to carry food, medicine, equipment, and people.

She swallowed.

Then smiled.

I’ll make it worth your time.

And Senko Maru continued east.

The first truly important event of the morning occurred at eight seventeen.

It concerned breakfast.

Specifically, Harper discovered that the last serving of sweet preserved fruit had disappeared from the communal food locker.

This would not ordinarily have qualified as an important operational matter.

Unfortunately, the South Dakota-class battleship had been looking forward to that serving for most of her night watch.

Her expression became deeply troubled.

She stood in the forward rest cabin, examining the empty container.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she raised her eyes.

“Emi.”

The Benson-class destroyer looked up from the table.

“Yes?”

Harper held up the container.

“Do you know anything about this?”

Emi blinked.

Then glanced toward the container.

A pause.

“No.”

The battleship regarded her.

The destroyer smiled innocently.

Harper narrowed her eyes.

“Emi.”

“Harper.”

“Where is the fruit?”

There was a long silence.

Then, from the opposite bunk, Alice spoke without opening her eyes.

“She ate it during the second night watch.”

Emi turned.

“ALICE!”

The Sumner-class girl remained perfectly still.

“I was awake.”

“That doesn’t mean you had to tell her!”

Harper slowly lowered the container.

Emi swallowed.

For several seconds, the battleship stared at her.

Then sighed.

“Did you at least enjoy it?”

The destroyer hesitated.

Then answered honestly.

“…Very much.”

Harper closed her eyes.

Noelle, entering the cabin with the meal register, took in the scene.

She looked toward the empty container.

Then toward Emi.

Then toward Harper.

For a moment, she seemed to understand everything.

“Inventory discrepancy?”

Harper nodded.

“Resolved.”

Noelle made a small note.

Emi stared.

“You’re actually recording this?”

The Atlanta-class cruiser looked up.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because somebody consumed a communal ration outside the assigned distribution.”

Emi slowly covered her face.

“Oh, come on.”

From the doorway, Kagerō made a quiet sound.

A laugh.

Small.

Uncontrolled.

Emi looked toward her.

“Kagerō!”

The former PCA destroyer immediately tried to compose herself.

“Sorry.”

That only made it worse.

Alice opened one eye.

Noelle continued writing.

Harper looked tired.

And Sakura, listening from the transport control position, laughed so hard that she nearly spilled her morning tea.

It was absurd.

Wonderful.

Exactly the sort of argument that made the little pontoon cabin feel like a home.

For several minutes, Sakura forgot how far they were from Horizon.

She could hear her friends.

Smell warm breakfast through the cabin ventilation.

Feel the sun on her cheeks.

And watch the ocean stretching away beneath the blue sky.

She thought of the Pendants.

Eleven silver objects stored safely at Horizon.

Eleven girls who should have had mornings like this.

Perhaps one of them would have stolen the fruit too.

Perhaps another would have kept a meticulous ration ledger.

Perhaps two sisters would have argued over the last sweet serving until somebody split it in half.

Sakura’s smile softened.

Then faded slightly.

I wish you were here.

She lowered her eyes.

For a moment, she felt an ache in her chest.

Not overwhelming.

Just persistent.

A reminder of why she was sailing.

Then she looked toward the empty precision-cargo compartment.

The place she’d prepared for the Respite Bath components.

Her expression became determined again.

We’re coming for them.

She looked east.

And kept moving.

II. The Little Things That Make a Home

By the third afternoon, the pontoons had acquired personalities.

Not literally.

Sakura was fairly certain of that.

Although, after Hour Zero, she had become considerably less confident about what could and could not possess a personality.

But among the convoy’s six girls, the three structures were no longer referred to simply as First, Second, and Third.

Emi had begun calling the forward pontoon The Palace.

This was largely because it possessed the main rest cabin and the galley.

Alice preferred The Listening Room, on the grounds that the quieter equipment compartment gave her somewhere to review acoustic recordings when she wasn’t on active watch.

Kagerō called the second pontoon The Workshop, because it contained emergency repair equipment, spare fittings, and the small maintenance locker.

Noelle referred to all three by their official numbers.

Harper approved of that.

Sakura did not object to any of the names.

She thought they were charming.

The third pontoon remained mostly empty.

Its cargo spaces waited for the supplies they would collect at Resolute.

Its securing points were freshly inspected.

Its protective cradles remained folded and locked.

And its enclosed machinery compartment had been carefully checked to ensure the sensitive equipment could be carried under controlled conditions on the return journey.

That pontoon had no popular nickname.

Not yet.

Sakura had thought about naming it.

Several times.

But every suggestion had felt a little premature.

It was empty.

Waiting.

Like an unfinished sentence.

Perhaps it should remain that way until they had something to bring home.

Harper inspected the pontoons that afternoon.

The scheduled machinery check required the convoy to reduce speed, and Sakura used the opportunity to examine the aftermost cargo connections.

She stood beside the second coupling housing while a small maintenance team consisting entirely of herself, Noelle, and Alice compared readings.

There was no separate human crew aboard the transport.

The Keelborn handled the routine maintenance they were equipped and trained to perform.

Sakura’s rigging contained mechanical supports and service access points designed for that purpose.

But the complexity still demanded care.

The first connection showed normal wear.

The second contained a trace of salt residue near one of the protective seals.

The third had a minor adjustment requirement in an auxiliary alignment actuator.

Nothing serious.

No damaged structural members.

No hydraulic failure.

No reason to stop the voyage.

Sakura cleaned the residue, inspected the seal, and recorded the condition.

Noelle checked the actuator reading.

Alice listened to the equipment during a controlled movement test.

The three worked in quiet concentration.

For a little while, the ocean seemed almost peaceful enough to forget that this was a naval convoy.

Then Harper approached.

“How is she?”

Sakura looked up.

The battleship stood on the water beside the pontoon.

Her immense armored machinery occupied a safe position clear of the cargo structures.

Sakura smiled.

“Everything looks good.”

Harper raised an eyebrow.

“Everything?”

“Nothing beyond ordinary adjustment.”

The battleship nodded.

“Good.”

Then she looked toward the little rest cabin.

The windows.

The ventilation housings.

The secured lifelines.

For a moment, her expression became thoughtful.

“I didn’t understand why you wanted all this.”

Sakura blinked.

“The accommodation?”

Harper nodded.

“Yes.”

The transport girl smiled faintly.

“I thought it would help.”

“It does.”

The battleship looked toward Alice, who was carefully replacing the cover over an acoustic monitoring access point.

Then toward Noelle, checking a fastening.

Then back at Sakura.

“More than I expected.”

The transport girl tilted her head.

Harper continued.

“I’m used to sailing as a battleship. My rigging carries everything necessary for my own operation.”

Sakura nodded.

“But there isn’t much room to stop being a battleship.”

The transport girl’s expression softened.

Harper looked toward the little window.

“A bunk. A table. Somewhere to put your shoes.”

She gave a faint smile.

“It’s strange how much difference that makes.”

Sakura nodded slowly.

Then asked:

“Do you like it?”

The battleship considered the question.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then answered:

“Yes.”

The transport girl smiled.

Harper added:

“Even with Emi stealing the fruit.”

Sakura laughed.

The battleship’s mouth twitched.

Then her expression became serious again.

“Just remember that the cabins aren’t armored like my rigging.”

Sakura nodded.

“I know.”

“If we enter combat conditions, nobody stays aboard merely because it’s comfortable.”

“Of course.”

“Anyone resting needs to be accounted for.”

“Yes.”

“And if a pontoon becomes unsafe, you must be prepared to isolate it.”

Sakura looked toward the long cargo structures.

Her smile faded.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then nodded.

“I know.”

Harper studied her.

The transport girl looked toward the third pontoon.

The empty cargo compartments.

The clean securing points.

The place where the components were supposed to go.

Then she said softly:

“I don’t want to lose any of them.”

The battleship’s expression softened.

“Neither do I.”

Sakura looked up.

Harper continued.

“But your cargo pontoons are equipment.”

A pause.

“You aren’t.”

The transport girl swallowed.

For a moment, she remembered Kade telling her almost the same thing.

This mission is successful if you bring yourself and your people home safely.

She nodded.

“Right.”

Harper gave her a small smile.

“Good.”

Then she glanced toward the rear cabin.

“And if Emi eats another unauthorized ration, we may have to classify that as a separate emergency.”

Sakura burst out laughing.

Harper smiled.

For a moment, the serious battleship looked almost mischievous.

Then she returned to her station.

Kagerō spent her next rest period in the forward cabin.

She had begun sleeping more easily.

Not perfectly.

Sometimes Sakura heard her wake during the night.

A sudden movement.

A quiet intake of breath.

Then the rustle of bedding as she sat up.

Sakura didn’t ask her to explain.

She knew enough about the battle at Horizon to understand that some memories didn’t disappear merely because a girl was exhausted.

Instead, she made sure there was warm water available.

A place to sit.

And someone nearby if Kagerō wanted to speak.

That afternoon, the destroyer sat at the table holding a mug between both hands.

Sakura entered after securing the machinery-check arrangements.

She smiled.

“Hi.”

Kagerō looked up.

“Hello.”

The transport girl sat opposite her.

For a little while, neither spoke.

The cabin rolled gently with the swell.

The little fan hummed.

The light through the windows was soft and warm.

Then Kagerō looked toward the wall.

Emi’s drawing of the convoy remained clipped beside the table.

Its proportions were still terrible.

But Sakura loved it.

Kagerō studied the picture.

Then smiled faintly.

“She drew us together.”

Sakura followed her gaze.

“Mm-hm.”

The destroyer looked toward the little flower beside her own name.

For several seconds, she remained quiet.

Then whispered:

“I don’t know why she put that there.”

Sakura smiled.

“Why don’t you ask?”

Kagerō shook her head.

“I did.”

The transport girl raised an eyebrow.

“And?”

The destroyer lowered her eyes.

A little color entered her cheeks.

“She said I looked like I needed something nice.”

Sakura’s expression softened.

For several seconds, she didn’t answer.

Then she smiled.

“That sounds like Emi.”

Kagerō nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked toward the drawing again.

For a moment, the expression on her face became difficult to read.

Then she spoke.

“Sakura?”

“Mm?”

“Do you think the girls at Horizon will still be angry with me when we return?”

The transport girl’s smile faded.

She considered the question carefully.

Kagerō had helped attack Horizon.

That was real.

She had also refused the PCA’s orders when their nature became undeniable.

That was real too.

She had fought against the Blackwake.

Recovered La Galissonnière’s Pendant.

And now she was helping protect a mission intended to supply the island and support its recovery research.

None of those things erased what had happened.

But they mattered.

Sakura folded her hands.

“Some might be.”

Kagerō lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

The transport girl continued gently.

“You can’t expect everyone to feel comfortable immediately.”

The destroyer nodded.

“I understand.”

“But…”

Sakura hesitated.

Then smiled faintly.

“I think people will notice that you came back.”

Kagerō looked up.

The transport girl continued.

“That you protected the convoy. That you helped us bring supplies home.”

A pause.

“And that you didn’t run away when it would have been easier.”

For several seconds, Kagerō stared.

Then she lowered her eyes.

Her fingers tightened around the mug.

Sakura reached across the table.

Rested her hand beside the destroyer’s.

Not quite touching.

Just offering.

Kagerō looked toward it.

Then slowly placed her hand over Sakura’s.

The transport girl smiled.

“You don’t have to fix everything in one voyage.”

Kagerō’s throat tightened.

For a moment, she looked toward the window.

The open ocean stretched beyond it.

Then she whispered:

“I’d like to do something right.”

Sakura nodded.

“You already are.”

The destroyer closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she remained still.

Then she nodded.

A small movement.

But enough.

Later, Sakura returned to her control station.

The cargo pontoons settled back into their cruising alignment.

The escort resumed its normal formation.

And the ocean remained blue and beautiful beneath the afternoon sunlight.

She looked east.

Then west.

No land.

No buildings.

No signs of home.

Just the long road beneath the waves.

Sakura smiled faintly.

For a moment, she thought of the eleven Pendants waiting at Horizon.

Then of Kagerō.

Of La Galissonnière.

Of the little flower in Emi’s drawing.

The transport girl drew a slow breath.

We have to get there.

Her smile faded.

Not into fear.

Into determination.

She checked the route.

Confirmed the speed.

Then raised the convoy circuit.

“Senko Maru. Cargo inspection complete. All pontoons secure. Ready to resume scheduled transit.”

Harper answered.

“Received. Resume cruising speed.”

Sakura nodded.

“Understood.”

The propulsion machinery responded.

The first pontoon followed.

Then the second.

Then the third.

And the convoy sailed onward.

III. A Shape Against the Sun

The first warning did not come from Alice’s sonar.

It came from Noelle.

Late on the third afternoon, with the light beginning to soften and the wind settling after a long, warm day, the Atlanta-class cruiser noticed something moving near the edge of a high cloud bank.

At first, she thought it was a bird.

A small dark shape.

Almost indistinguishable from the distant shadows crossing the clouds.

Then it changed direction.

Not like a seabird turning into the wind.

Like an aircraft adjusting its observation angle.

Noelle raised her optics.

The shape passed through a shaft of sunlight.

For an instant, she saw narrow wings.

A dark fuselage.

Something projecting above the forward section.

Then it turned away.

Her expression hardened.

“Air contact. Bearing northeast. High altitude, considerable distance. Unidentified aircraft, single.”

The convoy’s relaxed conversation stopped.

Harper answered immediately.

“Noelle, can you classify?”

“Negative. Insufficient visual detail.”

Sakura looked toward the sky.

She could see the cloud bank.

And, after several seconds, a tiny dark speck moving beneath its edge.

Nothing more.

She checked the transport’s defensive equipment.

The small gun mounts remained ready.

But their effective reach was nowhere near the altitude of the distant contact.

Even Noelle’s five-inch dual-purpose guns would have difficulty achieving a meaningful engagement without a reliable range and target track.

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

Harper knew that.

“Noelle, maintain observation. No firing unless the contact closes or demonstrates hostile intent.”

“Understood.”

Alice reported no new underwater contacts.

Emi and Kagerō maintained their screening positions.

Sakura looked toward the dark shape again.

It seemed to move parallel to the convoy’s general course for a short while.

Then it turned.

And disappeared into a patch of cloud.

Noelle watched for another ten minutes.

Nothing reappeared.

Finally, she reported:

“Contact lost. Identity unresolved.”

Harper acknowledged.

For a moment, the circuit remained quiet.

Then Sakura raised her microphone.

“Could it have been friendly?”

Noelle considered that.

“Possible.”

Harper added:

“We’re still outside the main area of reliable air coverage from Summit Key. A long-range patrol aircraft could operate here, but we weren’t advised of friendly aircraft on that track.”

Sakura swallowed.

“And Blackwake?”

The battleship did not immediately answer.

Then:

“Also possible.”

The transport girl looked toward the empty sky.

The aircraft had been so small.

Just a speck.

Something she might have admired from a distance if Noelle hadn’t been watching carefully.

Now she wondered what it had seen.

A South Dakota-class battleship.

An Atlanta-class cruiser.

Three destroyers.

A transport towing three substantial cargo pontoons.

Not the largest formation in the Pacific.

But distinctive.

Slow.

And worth investigating.

Sakura looked toward the aft structures.

The empty precision-cargo compartment waited beneath its secured cover.

She swallowed.

We haven’t even collected the parts yet.

The realization unsettled her.

If the Blackwake found them interesting now, what would happen on the return voyage when Senko Maru carried a substantial cargo of ammunition, medical supplies, and rare technical equipment?

She tried not to imagine it.

Then she remembered Kade’s instructions.

Follow your plan. Take care of one another.

Sakura drew a slow breath.

The ocean was still beautiful.

The light across the water had not changed.

Only her understanding of it.

Harper convened a short tactical discussion over the encrypted convoy circuit.

“We have one unresolved aerial sighting,” she began. “That is not proof we’re being shadowed.”

Noelle acknowledged.

“But it could be reconnaissance.”

“Correct.”

Alice spoke next.

“I’ve had no corresponding underwater contact.”

The battleship nodded.

“Good. Keep the observation record. Don’t invent a submarine merely because we’ve seen an aircraft.”

Sakura appreciated that.

The new Blackwake intelligence had been frightening enough.

The last thing she needed was a commander who responded to every unclassified contact by imagining an entire enemy fleet beneath the horizon.

Harper continued.

“We maintain the approved route for now. I’m requesting the latest regional contact summary from the Summit Key liaison. No unnecessary transmissions after that.”

Emi raised a question.

“Do we change speed?”

“Not yet. An unplanned speed change could disrupt our rendezvous without improving our safety.”

The Benson acknowledged.

Kagerō spoke quietly.

“If it was scouting, it may have reported our position already.”

Harper considered that.

Then answered:

“Yes.”

A pause.

“But we don’t know who received the report, or whether one was transmitted at all.”

Sakura looked toward the horizon.

The battleship continued.

“Our job isn’t to defeat every hypothetical enemy between here and Summit Key. Our job is to reach the rendezvous.”

The transport girl’s expression softened.

She looked toward Harper.

For a moment, she felt grateful.

Not because the battleship was pretending everything would be fine.

Because she wasn’t.

Harper was treating the situation as a problem.

One they could respond to without surrendering to fear.

Sakura smiled faintly.

That’s why I chose you.

 The evening meal was quieter.

Nobody said much about the aircraft.

They talked about other things.

Food.

Watch schedules.

Whether the second pontoon’s ventilation fan made a funny noise.

How many cargo crates Resolute Shoals would actually be able to release.

Whether Emi should be trusted with another cooking assignment.

Emi insisted she had learned from her mistakes.

Noelle stated that the galley had not yet recovered from the first experiment.

Alice suggested conducting a controlled trial using cold sandwiches.

Kagerō laughed.

Sakura laughed too.

But every so often, somebody looked toward the little window.

Beyond it, the western sky grew darker.

The horizon remained empty.

And the ocean rolled on beneath the first stars.

That night, Sakura found Harper standing beside the forward pontoon during a scheduled machinery check.

The battleship had reduced her own speed to match the transport’s inspection setting.

Her equipment moved steadily in the moonlight.

The main guns were trained safely away from the pontoon.

Her expression was calm.

But her eyes were tired.

Sakura looked toward her.

“Harper?”

The battleship glanced up.

“Mm?”

“Are you worried?”

Harper considered that.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Sakura went still.

For a moment, she hadn’t expected such a straightforward answer.

The battleship continued.

“I’m responsible for five other girls.”

A pause.

“And a transport carrying equipment Horizon badly needs.”

Sakura swallowed.

Harper looked toward the dark ocean.

“I’d be worried if I wasn’t paying attention.”

The transport girl considered that.

Then asked:

“Do you wish we’d chosen someone else?”

Harper turned toward her.

“Another escort commander?”

Sakura nodded.

The battleship seemed genuinely surprised.

Then she shook her head.

“No.”

For several seconds, she studied Sakura.

Then continued.

“I chose to come.”

The transport girl lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“And I know the risks.”

Harper’s expression softened.

“So don’t carry them all by yourself.”

Sakura looked up.

The battleship continued.

“You’ve already got three pontoons to pull.”

For a moment, Sakura stared.

Then she laughed.

A small, surprised laugh.

Harper smiled faintly.

“Let the rest of us carry the worry.”

Sakura swallowed.

For several seconds, she was quiet.

Then nodded.

“Okay.”

A pause.

“Thank you.”

Harper returned the nod.

“Get some rest when your watch ends.”

Sakura smiled weakly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“An excellent sign that everybody’s paying attention.”

The transport girl laughed again.

And the convoy continued toward Summit Key.

 IV. The Contact That Waited

At three fourteen the following morning, Alice heard something that did not belong.

It was faint.

So faint that she initially thought it might be interference from the transport’s machinery.

A low periodic vibration.

An irregular mechanical component.

Then silence.

Alice frowned.

Adjusted her listening equipment.

Waited.

The sound returned.

She compared it against the acoustic baseline she’d spent days building.

It did not match Senko Maru’s propulsion.

Nor the pontoon couplings.

Nor Harper’s battleship machinery.

Nor the escort destroyers.

It also lacked several features she’d expected from an ordinary conventional submarine.

But that didn’t make it harmless.

Alice listened again.

For several seconds, she remained perfectly still.

Then quietly raised the tactical circuit.

“Escort Commander, Alice. Possible underwater machinery contact.”

Harper answered immediately.

“Bearing?”

Alice provided the approximate direction.

“Port quarter. Classification uncertain. Weak intermittent signal.”

“Range?”

“Not reliable on passive.”

The battleship considered that.

Then ordered:

“Maintain observation. Do not close independently.”

“Understood.”

Alice listened.

The faint signal returned.

This time, it appeared to be moving.

Slowly.

Not directly toward the convoy.

Almost parallel to its course.

Her expression tightened.

A submarine could shadow a slower formation from outside effective attack range while waiting for a favorable approach.

Or it might simply be crossing the area.

She needed more evidence.

Alice made a small course adjustment within her assigned screen.

Listened again.

The contact’s bearing changed in a way that suggested relative movement, but the result was not enough to establish its position confidently.

She frowned.

Then spoke.

“Harper, contact persists. Possible submerged vessel maintaining a broadly similar course. Recommend defensive adjustment and limited active interrogation if the bearing develops.”

The battleship paused.

Then answered:

“Approved. Coordinate with Kagerō. Sakura, stand by for a gentle course change.”

The transport girl’s voice came through the circuit.

Sleepy.

But immediately attentive.

“Receiving.”

Sakura had been resting in the sheltered control berth when the call arrived.

Now she sat upright.

Checked her equipment.

And looked toward the night sea.

The stars were still visible.

The water remained dark and calm.

Her three pontoons followed behind her.

For a moment, nothing seemed wrong.

Then Alice’s words settled.

Possible submerged vessel.

Sakura swallowed.

“Understood.”

Harper gave the new course.

Not a sudden turn.

A modest alteration intended to open distance from the uncertain contact while preserving the general route toward Summit Key.

Sakura checked the coupling loads.

Then began changing course.

Her primary rigging responded.

The first pontoon followed.

The second moved through the widening arc.

The third adjusted more slowly.

Sakura reduced thrust slightly to prevent unnecessary lateral loading.

The aft equipment settled.

She monitored the readings.

All within limits.

Then reported:

“Senko Maru established on adjusted course. Pontoons stable.”

Harper acknowledged.

Alice continued listening.

Kagerō moved toward a supporting antisubmarine position.

The two destroyers did not charge toward the contact.

They did not fire weapons into the water.

They formed a cautious screen intended to prevent an unidentified submarine from gaining an uncontested approach.

Several minutes passed.

Then Alice received another faint return.

The bearing had changed.

The sound remained weak.

But the pattern resembled the earlier contact.

She frowned.

For a moment, she felt something cold settle in her stomach.

It’s still out there.

She raised the circuit.

“Contact remains possible. Similar acoustic characteristics, altered bearing. Cannot confirm whether it’s the same source.”

Harper acknowledged.

The battleship looked toward the horizon.

For several seconds, her expression hardened.

Then she asked:

“Any sign of an attack approach?”

Alice listened.

A longer pause followed.

Finally:

“Not confirmed.”

Harper nodded.

“Maintain defensive posture.”

Sakura watched the dark water.

For several seconds, she barely breathed.

Then she looked toward her pontoons.

The little windows were dark.

Kagerō’s bunk stood empty because she was on watch.

Emi was awake and moving into the revised screen.

Noelle remained at her antiaircraft station.

Harper guarded the convoy’s forward sector.

And Alice was listening for something none of them could see.

Sakura swallowed.

She had imagined enemies before.

Blackwake battleships.

Destroyers.

Carriers.

Massive gun flashes on the horizon.

But this was different.

There was no visible target.

No silhouette.

No smoke.

Just a faint sound beneath the water.

And the possibility that something had been following them while she admired the stars.

 An hour passed.

The contact remained intermittent.

It never approached clearly enough to justify an aggressive antisubmarine attack.

Nor did it vanish so convincingly that Alice could declare the area safe.

At one point, she conducted a brief active-sonar check under Harper’s authorization.

The pulses traveled through the water.

A faint, uncertain return appeared.

Then disappeared.

Not enough for a reliable firing solution.

Alice frowned.

“Possible contact, but no stable echo.”

Harper acknowledged.

Then asked:

“Do you recommend prosecution?”

The destroyer considered that.

The word carried weight.

If she recommended a search-and-attack maneuver, she might be asking the convoy to delay its journey and divert several escorts toward something she could not positively locate.

The transport would become more exposed.

The Blackwake might possess additional units.

And the submarine, if one existed, might already have reported their position.

Alice closed her eyes.

Listened again.

Then answered honestly.

“No. Not with current information. Recommend continued avoidance and observation.”

Harper nodded.

“Agreed.”

Sakura exhaled.

For a moment, she felt enormously relieved.

Not because the submarine was gone.

Because nobody had decided to turn the entire voyage into a hunt.

She looked toward the horizon.

The sky was beginning to pale.

The first hint of dawn touched the east.

And somewhere beneath the dark water, the unknown contact remained unresolved.

As sunlight began appearing, Sakura noticed how tired everyone looked.

Harper’s expression remained steady.

But the battleship had spent much of the night coordinating the uncertain contact response.

Alice had been listening for hours.

Kagerō and Emi had altered their patrol patterns repeatedly.

Noelle had maintained an air watch beneath a sky that slowly changed from black to gray.

Nobody was injured.

No weapons had been fired.

The convoy remained on course.

And yet the night had cost them something.

Rest.

Attention.

Fuel.

The margin of comfort that made a long voyage manageable.

Sakura thought of the new Blackwake intelligence.

The reports from Echo Cay.

The way those unfamiliar destroyers had attacked two Keelborn, inflicted serious damage, and withdrawn before reinforcements arrived.

She looked toward the water.

Then whispered:

“They don’t even have to shoot.”

Noelle heard her.

“Sakura?”

The transport girl blinked.

Then shook her head.

“Nothing.”

A pause.

Then she corrected herself.

“Actually… I was thinking about that contact.”

Noelle waited.

Sakura continued.

“If something follows us all night, we lose sleep. We change course. We burn more fuel.”

The Atlanta-class girl nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“And it might not have to attack at all.”

For several seconds, Noelle remained quiet.

Then answered:

“That’s one reason reconnaissance is valuable.”

Sakura looked toward her.

The cruiser continued.

“But don’t assume every unidentified sound is part of an elaborate enemy plan.”

The transport girl smiled faintly.

“Right.”

Noelle looked toward the brightening horizon.

“We have evidence of a possible submarine. We don’t know its mission.”

Sakura nodded.

Then she looked toward the pontoons.

The connections remained secure.

The cargo was undisturbed.

The little floating home had survived another night.

She drew a slow breath.

One thing at a time.

The sun began rising.

And the ocean turned blue again.

 V. The Screen Opens

The first radar contact appeared at eight forty-two.

Harper’s surface-search equipment detected it ahead and to port.

A small return.

Intermittent.

Initially indistinguishable from the clutter produced by the low rain clouds forming along the northern horizon.

Then a second return appeared.

And a third.

The battleship’s expression changed.

She checked the track.

The contacts were moving.

Not stationary weather.

Not a distant island.

Three objects approaching the convoy’s general sector at relatively high speed.

Harper raised the tactical circuit.

“Lantern Road, unidentified surface contacts. Port forward sector. Three probable vessels. All units maintain alert.”

The acknowledgments arrived.

Sakura looked toward the northern horizon.

Clouds hung low over the water.

A narrow band of haze reduced visibility.

She could not see the contacts.

Not yet.

She checked her pontoons.

All secure.

Then her own defensive weapons.

The small mounts were available, but Sakura knew perfectly well that they would not stop a determined destroyer attack by themselves.

She swallowed.

Harper continued.

“Noelle, surface observation. Alice, maintain underwater watch. Emi and Kagerō, remain within assigned screening boundaries.”

The battleship paused.

Then addressed the transport.

“Sakura, prepare for defensive maneuvering. Reduce to the planned precautionary speed.”

The transport girl’s hands moved immediately.

Propulsion eased.

The three pontoons settled into the lower-speed wake.

The aft alignment systems adjusted.

She checked the mechanical loads.

Normal.

Then reported:

“Senko Maru ready.”

Harper acknowledged.

For several minutes, the radar returns remained indistinct.

Then Noelle acquired a visual silhouette through the haze.

Her expression hardened.

“Contact One. Small dark hull-form, raised blade-shaped armored structure. Possible Knifecrest family.”

Sakura’s stomach tightened.

The name was familiar.

Horizon had recently circulated photographs of the new native Blackwake destroyers.

The same family that had attacked Stelle and Ivy near Echo Cay.

Noelle continued.

“Contact Two. Rounded forward structure, enlarged mouthlike opening. Possible Violetmaw.”

A pause.

Then:

“Contact Three partially obscured. Appears similar to Contact Two.”

Sakura looked toward the horizon.

For a moment, the haze broke.

And she saw them.

Three dark shapes.

Small compared with Harper.

Fast.

Low over the water.

One narrow and angular.

The others broader, with strange rounded forward structures that seemed to open into enormous mechanical jaws.

Their eyes glowed faintly through the haze.

Sakura felt cold.

Native Blackwake destroyers.

Not former Keelborn.

Not Princesses.

Ordinary enemy units of a kind the original game had never taught her to recognize.

And all three were maneuvering together.

Her throat tightened.

Harper’s voice remained calm.

“Lantern Road, probable hostile destroyer group. We will avoid engagement if possible. Maintain defensive formation.”

Noelle answered.

“Understood.”

Alice:

“Understood.”

Emi:

“Understood.”

Kagerō:

“Understood.”

Sakura swallowed.

Then raised her microphone.

“Senko Maru understands.”

The transport girl checked the course.

The enemy group had been detected sufficiently early that the convoy could begin adjusting away from it without immediately exposing the pontoons to violent maneuvering.

She applied a gradual correction.

The first pontoon followed.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Everything remained controlled.

For one brief moment, she felt almost hopeful.

Perhaps the Blackwake would simply continue on its own route.

Perhaps the two groups would pass beyond one another’s weapon range.

Perhaps the encounter would remain nothing more than a tense entry in the voyage log.

Then the three enemy ships changed course.

Together.

Toward the convoy.

Sakura’s stomach dropped.

Harper’s voice entered the circuit.

“Hostiles altering course. Defensive engagement probable.”

The battleship’s tone hardened.

“Weapons ready. No firing until authorized.”

Sakura looked toward the approaching shapes.

For several seconds, she remained perfectly still.

Then she whispered:

“Oh, no.”

The Blackwake did not immediately open fire.

That was the first thing that troubled Harper.

The three destroyers had changed course toward the convoy, but they were not charging directly at the transport.

Instead, the narrow Knifecrest moved outward.

One Violetmaw remained closer to the center.

The second began widening its approach.

They were opening their formation.

Creating separate firing angles.

Harper studied the movement.

Then checked the sea to the convoy’s rear.

Alice’s unresolved underwater contact from the night remained in her thoughts.

Not as a confirmed part of the approaching force.

But as a possible additional threat that could not be ignored.

The battleship raised the circuit.

“Alice, submarine picture?”

The Sumner-class girl listened.

“No positive current contact.”

“Understood.”

Harper looked toward the Blackwake destroyers.

The leading Knifecrest accelerated.

The central Violetmaw adjusted toward the transport’s projected course.

And the third remained slightly farther north.

The arrangement was simple enough.

A surface group seeking to force the convoy to maneuver.

But its purpose was not yet clear.

Harper considered the tactical situation.

The escort possessed superior heavy artillery.

Her sixteen-inch guns could inflict devastating damage on a destroyer if they achieved a hit.

But that did not guarantee the enemy would remain obligingly within a firing solution.

The Blackwake ships were smaller.

Faster.

More maneuverable.

And likely carrying substantial torpedo armament.

The convoy’s vulnerable element was not Harper.

It was Sakura.

A transport with three connected pontoons.

A long formation that could not turn like a destroyer.

The battleship narrowed her eyes.

“Noelle, prepare supporting fire. Emi, hold the inner port screen. Kagerō, don’t extend beyond our defensive boundary.”

Both destroyers acknowledged.

Sakura listened.

For a moment, she felt something unfamiliar.

Not the natural weight of her cargo equipment.

A different weight.

The knowledge that five girls were positioning themselves between her and an enemy group.

She swallowed.

Please don’t get hurt.

Then the first Blackwake gun flashed.

A distant orange spark beneath the haze.

The shell splashes rose well ahead of the convoy.

Harper’s expression hardened.

“Hostile fire confirmed. Return fire authorized.”

The ocean erupted with gunfire.

 Noelle fired first.

Her five-inch dual-purpose mounts traversed toward the leading enemy.

The initial salvo crossed the water.

Fell short.

Then the fire-control system adjusted.

The next rounds landed closer.

The Knifecrest altered course.

Its narrow armored body seemed to twist across the wave tops.

Sakura watched with mounting dread.

The enemy wasn’t simply charging into the shell splashes.

It was responding to the fall of shot.

Trying to maintain speed while complicating the defenders’ calculations.

Emi opened fire from the inner port screen.

Her five-inch guns sent a controlled salvo toward the closest Violetmaw.

The enemy turned.

Its rounded armored head opened.

A dark gun barrel projected from the enormous circular mouth.

It fired.

Several shells crossed the water.

Two fell short.

One burst near the edge of the transport’s projected route.

Sakura flinched.

The shell splash rose high enough that she could see it over the first pontoon’s forward structure.

For a moment, her breath caught.

Then the water collapsed.

No damage.

Not yet.

Harper’s voice entered the circuit.

“Sakura, maintain your defensive course. Do not turn toward the gunfire.”

The transport girl swallowed.

“Understood.”

She checked the coupling loads.

All normal.

Her propulsion system remained steady.

The pontoons continued trailing behind her.

They didn’t know a battle was happening.

They simply followed.

Sakura looked toward the enemy.

The central Violetmaw was firing again.

Its mouthlike weapon housing recoiled.

The surrounding armor shifted.

The dark creature moved through the water with an unsettling rhythm.

She felt fear rise in her chest.

Then Kagerō’s voice entered the circuit.

“Outer screen. I have Contact Three. Engaging.”

The Kagerō-class destroyer opened fire.

Her shells crossed the sea.

The first salvo straddled the distant Blackwake.

The second struck one of its outer structures.

A small explosion burst across the rounded armor.

The creature turned sharply.

For a moment, Sakura felt relief.

Then a new warning arrived.

Alice’s voice.

Sharper than before.

“Underwater contact! Port quarter! Probable submarine machinery!”

Harper went still.

For one terrible second, Sakura understood.

The unknown sound from the night.

The shadowing contact.

The enemy destroyers opening their formation.

They might be connected.

Or they might not.

But both threats were real now.

Harper answered immediately.

“Alice, take the antisubmarine picture. Kagerō, maintain your surface screen. Emi, cover Sakura.”

Alice acknowledged.

The Sumner-class girl changed course within her assigned sector.

Her sonar equipment began building a fresh contact picture.

The underwater signal was still difficult.

But now it appeared more clearly.

A machinery source moving beneath the surface.

Not her convoy.

Not the cargo pontoons.

Not ordinary biological noise.

She checked the bearing.

Then her expression tightened.

“Possible submerged contact moving toward attack position.”

Sakura felt cold.

The surface destroyers were still firing.

The submarine might be closing.

Her three pontoons stretched behind her like an enormous invitation.

She swallowed.

Then raised her microphone.

“Harper.”

The battleship answered.

“Go ahead.”

Sakura’s voice trembled slightly.

“I can alter course, but I need to do it gradually. If we turn too sharply at this speed, the aft coupling loads will rise.”

Harper nodded.

“Understood. Prepare for a controlled turn on my order.”

The transport girl took a slow breath.

Then looked toward the sea.

The ocean was still beautiful.

Even now.

The sunlight glittered on the waves.

White spray rose where enemy shells struck.

Clouds moved slowly overhead.

And somewhere beneath that wonderful blue surface, something was trying to put torpedoes into her.

Sakura gritted her teeth.

Not today.

The first torpedo warning came from Alice.

Not a dramatic white wake spotted at the last possible second.

A change in the underwater sound.

A brief mechanical disturbance.

Then a probable high-speed contact moving away from the submarine’s estimated position.

Alice’s eyes widened.

She checked the bearing.

Then shouted into the circuit.

“Possible torpedo launch! Port aft sector! Bearing and track developing!”

Harper responded immediately.

“All units, torpedo defense!”

The battleship looked toward the transport.

“Sakura, reduce speed and prepare to come right on my mark. Controlled turn. Do not overload the connections.”

The transport girl’s hands moved.

She reduced thrust.

The pontoons settled into their lower-speed wake.

The first connection adjusted.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Sakura felt the load change.

Her eyes remained fixed on the indicators.

Alice continued reporting.

The underwater contact was uncertain.

A possible second weapon.

The tracks appeared to be aimed at the convoy’s previous course.

Harper waited only long enough to establish that the turn would improve the transport’s position rather than carry it across another predicted track.

Then gave the order.

“Sakura. Right ten. Now.”

The transport girl obeyed.

Her rigging began turning.

Not sharply.

Not with a destroyer’s sudden sideways movement.

The motion was deliberate.

A great transport system easing onto a new course.

The first pontoon followed.

The second began its wider arc.

The third lagged as expected.

A yellow caution indicator appeared.

Lateral load rising.

Sakura reduced power slightly.

The load stabilized.

She watched the figures.

Come on.

The pontoons continued turning.

The caution disappeared.

For one moment, she felt triumph.

Then an underwater explosion rolled through the sea behind the outer screen.

Not against the transport.

Some distance away.

A heavy, muffled concussion.

Sakura flinched.

The water lifted beneath her equipment.

A long pressure wave passed through the surface.

The pontoons moved.

Their connections flexed.

No damage warnings appeared.

Alice’s voice followed.

“Underwater detonation. Cannot confirm target or cause. I retain one probable submerged contact.”

Sakura swallowed.

She looked toward the aft equipment.

Still secure.

The first pontoon.

The second.

The third.

All following.

For one brief moment, she wanted to laugh with relief.

Then an enemy shell struck the water beside the outer cargo pontoon.

A column of spray rose.

Sakura’s heart nearly stopped.

The water fell.

A sharp metallic sound echoed from the aft structure.

Not a direct shell hit.

A fragment.

Something had struck the external equipment.

An indicator flashed.

AFT PONTOON — EXTERNAL FITTING DAMAGE.

Sakura stared.

For a moment, she felt the impact through the machinery.

A brief, unpleasant vibration.

Not severe.

But real.

She checked the connection.

Still secure.

The cargo compartment remained dry.

The protective housing over one external fitting had been damaged.

She swallowed.

Then raised the radio.

“Senko Maru reports minor aft-pontoon external damage. No loss of alignment or cargo integrity.”

Harper acknowledged.

“Keep moving. Don’t attempt repairs under fire.”

Sakura nodded.

“Understood.”

She looked toward the damaged fitting.

Then toward the approaching Blackwake destroyers.

For one terrible moment, fear became anger.

That was her pontoon.

Her equipment.

The little floating home she’d spent days preparing.

The place where her friends slept.

The compartment waiting for the restoration parts.

And the Blackwake was firing at it.

Sakura’s hands tightened.

Her defensive gun mounts began tracking the nearest threat automatically under the authorized settings.

She could fire.

She could try to hurt it.

But the enemy remained beyond the effective reach of her small weapons.

And if she became distracted, she might overload the aft connections or miss the next maneuvering order.

She forced herself to breathe.

My job isn’t to chase them.

The thought was painful.

But clear.

My job is to carry everyone home.

She checked the coupling loads.

Adjusted propulsion.

And kept sailing.

VI. The Difference Between Fighting and Winning

Kagerō saw the enemy Knifecrest turn toward Sakura.

It was not a dramatic maneuver.

Not a sudden charge.

Just a change in heading that brought the Blackwake destroyer closer to the transport’s projected route.

The blade-shaped creature’s forward structure tilted.

Its gun housing traversed.

And the dark appendage trailing behind it moved through the water in a slow arc.

Kagerō checked the bearing.

For a moment, her stomach tightened.

The enemy was attempting to use the submarine warning to its advantage.

While Sakura maneuvered away from the possible torpedo tracks, the Knifecrest was repositioning to threaten the course she would have to take next.

Kagerō recognized the principle immediately.

A surface ship forced to avoid one danger became vulnerable to another.

She’d learned that in the original game.

Then relearned it under far worse conditions during the defense of Horizon.

She raised her radio.

“Escort Commander, outer screen. Knifecrest moving toward Senko Maru’s revised track.”

Harper answered.

“I see it. Maintain your screen.”

Kagerō swallowed.

The enemy was approaching a range where her guns could engage effectively.

She adjusted her fire-control solution.

Waited for the Knifecrest to steady on its new course.

Then fired.

Her main battery discharged.

The first salvo straddled the dark creature.

The Knifecrest turned.

The next salvo followed its movement.

One shell struck an armored appendage near the enemy’s rear structure.

A bright explosion burst across the black surface.

The creature shuddered.

A long mechanical section broke away and fell into the water.

Kagerō felt a fierce satisfaction.

Then something else.

A sudden urge to accelerate.

To close the distance.

To finish the enemy before it could recover.

She could do it.

Her torpedoes remained available.

Her rigging was in good condition.

The Knifecrest was damaged.

Its speed appeared reduced.

A pursuit might destroy it.

For one brief moment, she imagined the enemy disappearing beneath the water.

A confirmed kill.

One less Blackwake destroyer to threaten another girl.

Then Harper’s voice entered the circuit.

“Kagerō, hold the assigned boundary.”

The destroyer froze.

She looked toward Sakura.

The transport was still turning carefully through the disturbed water.

Its pontoons followed behind.

Emi remained close to the vulnerable formation.

Noelle’s guns were engaged against another attacker.

Alice was trying to maintain contact with the probable submarine.

And Harper was covering the whole engagement.

Kagerō swallowed.

The enemy Knifecrest was withdrawing northward.

It would be easy to pursue.

Far too easy.

She remembered La Galissonnière.

The French cruiser’s damaged rigging.

The desperate withdrawal.

The moment Kagerō had wanted to turn back and do something—anything—rather than accept that the battle was going badly.

She closed her eyes for half a second.

Then opened them.

“Understood. Holding boundary.”

Her machinery maintained station.

The Knifecrest continued withdrawing.

Kagerō watched it.

For one moment, the decision hurt.

Then Sakura’s voice entered the circuit.

“Kagerō, thank you. That one was coming straight toward us.”

The destroyer went still.

She looked toward the transport.

Sakura stood amid her large cargo machinery, guiding the pontoons through the turn.

Her face was pale.

But she was still moving.

The connections remained secure.

The little rest cabins were intact.

Kagerō swallowed.

Then answered:

“You’re welcome.”

A pause.

“Stay behind the screen.”

Sakura smiled faintly.

“Believe me, that’s the plan.”

Kagerō looked toward the retreating Blackwake destroyer.

Then back at Sakura.

For the first time, she felt no need to pursue.

Her assignment wasn’t to sink the enemy at any cost.

It was to make sure Sakura survived.

And she was still doing that.

 Noelle’s five-inch guns continued firing.

The Atlanta-class cruiser had selected the central Violetmaw as her immediate target.

The creature was maneuvering aggressively, making short course changes while its mouth-mounted weapon continued firing toward the convoy.

Its accuracy wasn’t perfect.

Several shells landed far from the transport.

Others came close enough to raise dangerous columns of spray.

But it didn’t need perfect accuracy to be frightening.

Sakura’s three pontoons offered a much larger target than the human-shaped girl controlling them.

A single shell striking an unprotected accommodation compartment could be disastrous.

Noelle understood that.

Her expression hardened.

She adjusted the fire-control solution.

Then fired another salvo.

The rounds crossed the water.

The first landed short.

The second struck the Violetmaw’s forward armor.

The third burst against an exposed gun housing.

A shower of black fragments scattered across the sea.

The creature turned sharply.

Its enormous mouth opened.

Then closed.

For a moment, the gun inside appeared unable to fire.

Noelle watched.

Her eyes narrowed.

“Come on.”

She adjusted the next solution.

The enemy began turning away.

Then another flash appeared from its flank.

A smaller gun.

Still operational.

Noelle sighed.

“Of course.”

She fired again.

The shell splashes rose around the creature.

The Violetmaw accelerated.

Not toward the convoy.

Away.

Noelle checked the formation.

The damaged Knifecrest was already retiring northward.

The central Violetmaw now appeared to be following.

Only the third destroyer remained committed to the attack.

Her eyes narrowed.

They’re not staying.

She raised the radio.

“Escort Commander. Two hostiles opening distance. Third remains on attacking bearing.”

Harper acknowledged.

Then the battleship looked toward the last enemy.

The remaining Violetmaw had maneuvered outside Noelle’s most favorable firing sector.

It was farther away than Emi could safely pursue without weakening Sakura’s screen.

And it appeared to be preparing another attack.

Harper turned one of her forward main turrets.

The enormous sixteen-inch barrels moved slowly.

Deliberately.

The fire-control system began calculating.

A destroyer was not an ideal target for such a weapon.

It was small.

Fast.

Capable of changing course in the time a heavy salvo took to arrive.

But the battleship didn’t need to demonstrate perfect accuracy.

She needed to make that enemy reconsider the wisdom of continuing toward Senko Maru.

Harper checked the sector.

No friendly vessel lay near the intended firing line or target area.

Her turret reached alignment.

The loading system confirmed ready.

Then she transmitted:

“All units, heavy-gun fire. Maintain present safe sectors.”

Sakura looked up.

For one brief moment, she saw Harper’s immense barrels elevate.

Then the South Dakota-class battleship fired.

The concussion rolled across the sea like thunder.

Sakura flinched.

The three great guns recoiled.

Enormous shells rose toward the distant Blackwake destroyer.

For several seconds, the enemy continued moving.

Then the water around it erupted.

One shell fell short.

Another landed beyond the target.

A third struck the sea close enough to throw a tremendous column of spray across the creature’s forward machinery.

The underwater concussion and fragments shook the smaller enemy.

A dark armored section broke away.

The Violetmaw turned violently.

For a moment, it seemed almost to roll.

Then it recovered.

Its speed decreased.

The mouth-mounted gun swung toward Harper.

For one terrible second, Sakura thought it might fire again.

Instead, the creature changed course.

Away from the convoy.

The remaining Blackwake ships were withdrawing.

Harper watched.

Her expression remained hard.

She did not order pursuit.

The gun crews began restoring the main turret to a safe condition.

Ammunition expenditure was recorded.

One heavy salvo.

Expensive.

Imperfect.

But effective enough to help force the enemy away.

The battleship raised the circuit.

“All units, hold defensive positions. Do not pursue.”

The acknowledgments came.

Sakura closed her eyes.

For one brief moment, relief threatened to overwhelm her.

Then Alice spoke.

“Submerged contact still possible. I haven’t established a reliable position.”

The relief stopped.

Sakura opened her eyes.

The Blackwake surface ships were withdrawing.

But the sea beneath her remained uncertain.

She swallowed.

Not finished.

Alice had one opportunity to attack the submarine.

Only one.

The probable underwater contact became briefly distinct enough for her sonar to establish an approximate position.

The enemy appeared to be maneuvering away from its earlier approach.

Its machinery signature was unfamiliar.

Possible Veilfin family.

But the exact classification remained uncertain.

Alice looked toward the bearing.

Then checked the relative positions of Sakura and the other escorts.

A submarine trying to disengage might be a threat for several more minutes.

Its torpedoes could still be in the water.

Its position could be wrong.

And the convoy’s own maneuvering noise complicated everything.

She requested permission for a limited antisubmarine attack.

Harper considered it.

Then authorized one defensive pattern, provided Alice could maintain sufficient localization and remain within the assigned protection area.

The Sumner-class girl acknowledged.

Her expression became focused.

She adjusted course.

Brought the underwater weapon system into the correct sector.

Listened again.

The contact remained faint.

But the estimated position was usable.

She checked that no friendly unit occupied the danger area.

Then fired.

The ahead-throwing antisubmarine projectiles entered the water in a controlled pattern.

For several seconds, the sea appeared unchanged.

Then a series of muffled underwater detonations traveled through the water.

Sakura felt the vibrations through her rigging.

Not close enough to threaten the pontoons.

But distinct.

She looked toward Alice.

The destroyer remained focused.

Listening.

Waiting.

For a moment, nothing followed.

Then a faint disturbance appeared on the acoustic display.

An irregular mechanical sound.

A possible change in propulsion.

Then silence.

Alice’s expression tightened.

She listened longer.

No stable contact.

No confirmed destruction.

No visible wreckage.

She raised the circuit.

“Antisubmarine attack complete. Contact lost. No confirmed result.”

Harper acknowledged.

“Return to screen. Maintain caution.”

Alice nodded.

“Understood.”

The Sumner-class girl looked toward the dark water.

For one moment, she wished she could know what had happened.

Had the projectiles damaged the submarine?

Driven it deeper?

Forced it to withdraw?

Or had the enemy simply evaded the pattern?

She couldn’t tell.

And she refused to invent an answer.

Alice returned to her position.

The ocean settled.

The gunfire stopped.

And the convoy continued east.

For several minutes, Sakura barely noticed the sunlight.

She was too busy checking her equipment.

The aft pontoon had suffered minor external damage.

A protective cover was torn.

One small support bracket was bent.

The damaged section had not penetrated the primary cargo compartment.

The connections remained sound.

The auxiliary maneuvering systems were operational.

But the impact had to be inspected.

She reduced speed under Harper’s supervision.

The convoy adjusted.

Alice maintained the underwater watch.

Noelle monitored the sky.

Emi and Kagerō screened the approaches while Harper covered the wider surface sector.

Only then did Sakura examine the damaged fitting more closely.

The cover hung at an awkward angle.

A length of protective material had been torn away.

And one exposed section showed a shallow gouge from the shell fragment.

Sakura touched the metal.

For a moment, she felt a little ache through the mechanical connection.

Not like being struck in the flesh.

More like recognizing that part of her equipment was no longer quite right.

She swallowed.

Then called toward Noelle.

“Could you help me?”

The Atlanta-class cruiser approached.

Her expression became concerned.

“Of course.”

Together, they inspected the damage.

Noelle secured the loose outer cover.

Sakura checked the bracket.

The mounting remained strong enough for the journey, but the damaged edge needed to be stabilized before rough weather imposed additional strain.

They fitted a temporary retaining plate and protective covering from the transport’s emergency repair stores.

The work was slow.

Awkward.

Made more difficult by the fact that the pontoons still moved with the sea.

But it was manageable.

When they finished, Sakura checked the status readings again.

All within the approved limits.

She exhaled.

“Okay.”

Noelle looked toward her.

“You all right?”

Sakura nodded.

Then hesitated.

The cruiser noticed.

Her expression softened.

“Sakura?”

The transport girl looked toward the little cabin windows.

One of them was close enough to the damaged area that a slightly different shell impact might have struck the accommodation compartment.

Her stomach tightened.

She swallowed.

“Someone could have been in there.”

Noelle followed her gaze.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then the cruiser answered gently.

“But nobody was.”

Sakura nodded.

“I know.”

“We followed the battle-station procedure. The rest compartments were cleared before the engagement developed.”

The transport girl lowered her eyes.

The Atlanta-class girl continued.

“That mattered.”

For several seconds, Sakura remained quiet.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Noelle placed a hand on her shoulder.

“You did well.”

The transport girl looked up.

Her eyes widened slightly.

The cruiser smiled.

“You handled the pontoons properly. You reported damage. You kept your course under fire.”

A pause.

“And you didn’t try to become a battleship.”

Sakura laughed weakly.

“Wouldn’t have gone very well.”

“No.”

Noelle smiled faintly.

Then became serious.

“You protected what you were carrying.”

Sakura looked toward the three pontoons.

The first.

The second.

The third.

Still there.

Still connected.

Still moving through the ocean.

She swallowed.

Then smiled.

“Yeah.”

A pause.

“I did.”

The formal engagement report was brief.

Three probable native Blackwake destroyers.

One Knifecrest-family unit.

Two Violetmaw-family units.

Surface gunfire exchanged.

One or more probable submarine contacts, possibly associated with the surface group.

An underwater attack attempted.

One defensive antisubmarine pattern expended.

No confirmed submarine sinking.

No confirmed surface enemy sinking.

All three visible Blackwake destroyers withdrew after receiving damage and encountering determined defensive fire.

Friendly damage consisted of minor external damage to Senko Maru’s aft pontoon and several small superficial impacts to escort equipment.

No Keelborn had been sunk.

No serious injuries had been reported.

Ammunition had been expended.

Fuel had been consumed during maneuvering.

The convoy had temporarily deviated from its planned track.

And the crew was tired.

Sakura read the summary.

For several seconds, she stared.

Then looked toward Harper.

“That’s it?”

The battleship raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

The transport girl pointed toward the report.

“We fought for our lives.”

Harper nodded.

“Yes.”

“And that’s how it sounds?”

The battleship considered that.

Then smiled faintly.

“Operational reports rarely capture how something feels.”

Sakura lowered her eyes.

For a moment, she looked toward the dark smudge on the aft pontoon where the damaged fitting had been temporarily secured.

Then she nodded.

“I guess not.”

Harper studied her.

Then continued.

“What matters is that we know what happened.”

A pause.

“And what we still don’t know.”

Sakura looked up.

The battleship pointed toward the report.

“The probable submarine might have been coordinating with the surface group. Or the timing might have been opportunistic.”

The transport girl nodded.

“We don’t know.”

“Exactly.”

Harper continued.

“We damaged their ships. We didn’t confirm any sinkings.”

“Yes.”

“And they withdrew before we could determine whether they intended a sustained attack.”

Sakura looked toward the horizon.

The Blackwake destroyers were gone.

For now.

She swallowed.

“They hurt Stelle and Ivy like this.”

Harper’s expression darkened.

“Yes.”

The transport girl remembered the Echo Cay report.

A hit-and-run destroyer group.

Two wounded Keelborn.

Three attackers withdrawing before reinforcements arrived.

Now Sakura had watched something similar herself.

The enemies hadn’t remained to fight Harper’s battleship until the last one sank.

They’d approached.

Threatened the transport.

Forced the escorts to respond.

Launched an underwater attack.

Then withdrawn when continued engagement became costly.

Sakura felt cold.

“They can do this again.”

Harper nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“And so can we respond again.”

The transport girl looked toward her.

The battleship’s expression remained serious.

“We know more than we did yesterday.”

Sakura considered that.

Then looked toward her pontoons.

The damaged fitting.

The temporary repair.

The little floating cabin that was still intact.

For a moment, the fear remained.

Then something steadier settled beneath it.

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Harper smiled faintly.

“Good.”

Then she raised her radio.

“Lantern Road, Escort Commander. Resume assigned route at reduced inspection speed. We’ll increase only after the aft repair is cleared for sustained cruising.”

The acknowledgments came.

Sakura returned to her controls.

Checked the pontoons.

Then gently increased propulsion.

The first followed.

The second.

The third.

The damaged external cover held beneath its temporary repair.

The convoy moved forward.

Sakura looked toward the eastern horizon.

She was still afraid.

But she was still sailing.

And that mattered more than she had ever understood before.

 VII. Nobody Sails Alone

They did not reach their intended cruising speed again until late afternoon.

By then, the temporary repair on the aft pontoon had passed its inspection.

The damaged bracket remained a concern.

Sakura had recorded a restriction against unnecessary heavy-weather maneuvering until a proper replacement could be fitted.

She had also placed a small marker beside the relevant machinery display so she wouldn’t have to search through several pages of information every time she wanted to check it.

Noelle approved.

Harper approved.

Corwin, Sakura suspected, would eventually approve.

Probably after asking why she hadn’t brought an additional spare bracket.

That thought made her smile.

Only a little.

The battle had left her feeling strangely hollow.

She’d expected to be excited after surviving.

Relieved.

Triumphant, perhaps.

She’d watched enough dramatic sorties in the original game to imagine how the scene should have ended.

The enemy withdrawing.

The friendly fleet regrouping.

A victory announcement.

Someone making a joke.

Then everyone going home.

But the ocean didn’t provide a victory announcement.

The Blackwake simply disappeared beyond effective contact range.

The guns fell silent.

The smoke dispersed.

And six tired girls were left checking their equipment, counting ammunition, and confirming that nobody had been hurt.

Sakura sat in the forward rest cabin during her next permitted break.

A cup of tea rested between her hands.

She hadn’t taken a sip.

The liquid had begun cooling.

Across the table, Emi was quiet.

That alone said a great deal.

The Benson-class destroyer had developed a shallow dent and several scrapes on one of her external armor plates during the engagement.

None had compromised her essential systems.

But the damage reminded her that the enemy had been firing toward her, too.

Alice sat nearby with her headphones resting around her neck.

She was reviewing the acoustic contact record.

Not because anyone had ordered her to work through her rest period.

Because she was trying to understand what she’d heard.

Kagerō occupied the bench beside Sakura.

Her expression was thoughtful.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Emi looked toward the empty fruit container sitting in the storage rack.

She sighed.

“I really wish I hadn’t eaten that.”

Sakura blinked.

Then turned toward her.

For a moment, she couldn’t understand.

“Why?”

Emi looked toward the container.

“Could’ve used something sweet right now.”

There was a long silence.

Then Alice slowly lowered her report.

She looked toward the destroyer.

“Emi.”

“What?”

“You ate it.”

“I know.”

“And now you’re upset that it’s gone.”

“Yes.”

Alice considered that.

Then nodded.

“An entirely preventable tragedy.”

Sakura made a small sound.

Then covered her mouth.

Emi stared.

For several seconds, she looked indignant.

Then she sighed.

“Fine. Fine. I deserve that.”

Sakura began laughing.

Quietly at first.

Then harder.

She tried to stop.

Failed.

Covered her face.

And laughed until her eyes watered.

Emi blinked.

Kagerō looked toward her.

Alice smiled.

For a moment, all three seemed surprised.

Then Emi grinned.

“There she is.”

Sakura lowered her hands.

Her cheeks were warm.

She was still smiling.

The Benson-class girl leaned back.

“Thought we’d lost you to the cargo manifests.”

Sakura laughed again.

Then shook her head.

“Sorry.”

Kagerō’s expression softened.

“Don’t be.”

The transport girl looked toward her.

For several seconds, the former PCA destroyer remained quiet.

Then she spoke.

“You were frightened.”

Sakura’s smile faded.

She considered that.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Kagerō looked toward the table.

“So was I.”

Emi stopped smiling.

Alice lowered her eyes.

For a moment, the cabin became quiet.

Then Sakura spoke.

“When that shell hit the aft pontoon…”

She swallowed.

“I thought…”

The words stopped.

Kagerō waited.

Sakura looked toward the little window.

The third pontoon followed behind them.

Its external cover bore the temporary repair.

The cargo compartment remained intact.

The small sheltered maintenance space was still dry.

Nobody had been inside when the fragment struck.

But somebody could have been.

And on the return voyage, that same compartment might hold the very machinery Horizon needed.

Sakura lowered her eyes.

“I thought we were going to lose it.”

Kagerō nodded.

Emi looked toward the window.

Then back at Sakura.

For several seconds, she was quiet.

Finally, she spoke.

“You didn’t.”

The transport girl looked up.

Emi continued.

“You did exactly what Harper told you to do. You made the turn. Kept the pontoons together.”

Sakura swallowed.

The Benson smiled faintly.

“And you didn’t panic.”

The transport girl looked down.

For a moment, she considered correcting that.

She had been frightened enough that her hands were still trembling slightly after the battle.

But Emi hadn’t said she wasn’t afraid.

Only that she hadn’t let fear take control of her machinery.

Sakura nodded slowly.

“I suppose.”

Alice spoke next.

“You also gave us useful damage reports.”
