Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

I. The Boy Who Stopped Counting His Kills

On the eighth anniversary of his summoning, Kade Bher killed something that had once been a man.

Or, at least, something that had remembered enough of being a man to make the experience unpleasant.

The creature came through the smoke on four limbs.

Its body was tall and emaciated, its skin stretched across an impossible arrangement of bones. A human face hung beneath its rib cage, eyes shut, mouth moving soundlessly as though it were reciting a prayer nobody could hear.

Above its shoulders rose a crown of black antlers.

The antlers were covered in small, pale mouths.

Every one of them was screaming.

Kade ducked beneath the first sweeping limb.

The thing struck the broken ground where his head had been.

Stone shattered.

A soldier several paces behind him stumbled backward, raising his shield too late to do anything useful.

Kade stepped inside the creature’s reach.

His right gauntlet struck its forward joint.

The impact sounded like an iron gate being torn from its hinges.

Bone split.

The creature folded sideways.

Before it could recover, Kade seized the broken limb with his left hand, twisted his hips, and drove his right fist through the narrow space beneath its ribs.

Golden-white force erupted from the articulated plates around his knuckles.

The creature convulsed.

For a heartbeat, every mouth on its antlers stopped screaming.

Then the entire body collapsed inward, its unnatural structure breaking apart beneath the concentrated force.

Kade tore his arm free.

Black blood splashed across his boots.

The creature struck the ground.

Its bones twitched once.

Then dissolved into ash.

Kade exhaled.

”Well.”

He looked down at his gauntlet.

”That was disgusting.”

Something shrieked behind him.

He turned.

Another creature came leaping over a ruined barricade.

This one possessed a broad, armored head and six limbs ending in hooked claws.

Kade raised his left hand.

The monster landed.

He caught it by the throat.

Its momentum drove him backward half a step.

The metal plates of his gauntlet groaned beneath the strain.

Kade’s boots cut grooves into the mud.

Then he planted his feet.

”Wrong person.”

He drove the creature downward.

Its head struck the ground.

He followed with a punch powerful enough to crater the soil beneath it.

The impact sent a ring of dust and shattered stone across the battlefield.

The monster did not rise.

Kade stood over it for a moment.

Then looked toward the western defensive line.

”NEXT!”

A soldier nearby stared at him.

For a second, the young man’s expression suggested he wasn’t entirely certain whether he should be relieved or terrified.

Kade noticed.

He pointed toward the next barricade.

”Don’t admire the scenery! Get behind cover!”

The soldier flinched.

”Y-Yes, Hero!”

”Use my name!”

”YES, LORD GAUNTLET!”

Kade closed his eyes.

”...Close enough.”

Then the next group of monsters reached the barricade.

And the fighting continued.

 Eight years.

Eight years since the summoning chamber.

Eight years since the golden circle.

Eight years since the road in Mizunokuni had vanished beneath his feet.

Kade was twenty now.

Not particularly tall, even by the standards of some of the ordinary soldiers fighting alongside him, but the difference mattered considerably less when his arms were covered in Holy Gauntlets capable of shattering monsters larger than houses.

His brown hair had grown longer than he usually preferred, though he cut it whenever it became inconvenient. Old scars marked his body. Newer ones crossed his hands and forearms where the Gauntlets’ protective systems had failed to prevent every injury.

His face had changed.

Not so completely that Ranmei would have failed to recognize him.

At least, he hoped not.

But enough that the boy who had once raced along a shrine road in pursuit of dinner had become difficult to find in the man standing amid the smoke.

The mischievous grin remained.

Unfortunately for everyone who knew him.

So did the habit of saying exactly the wrong thing at exactly the wrong moment.

But eight years of warfare had taught him when to stop smiling.

And when to kill.

He was exceptionally good at the latter.

Among the current generation of Heroes, nobody matched him in close-quarters combat.

The Sword and Katana Heroes possessed tremendous technique with their respective weapons.

The Hammer Hero could deliver devastating blows against armored formations.

The Axe Hero excelled at breaking fortified positions.

The Dagger Hero could slip through spaces most fighters never noticed.

But Kade’s Gauntlets made his own body the weapon.

There was no blade to recover after an enemy struck it aside.

No bowstring to draw.

No distance required between him and his opponent.

If a monster stepped close enough to reach him, it had already entered the most dangerous place on the battlefield.

Kade could break limbs, crush armored joints, redirect attacks, and strike through supernatural defenses by concentrating the Gauntlets’ power at the point of impact.

He had spent years refining those abilities.

Years learning how to fight without wasting movement.

Years discovering which creatures needed their hearts destroyed, which could survive decapitation, and which had to be broken apart before their bodies stopped trying to reassemble themselves.

He had learned how to kill things that were larger than siege towers.

Things that could fly.

Things that could crawl through shadows.

Things that wore the faces of the dead.

And things that possessed no recognizable anatomy at all.

He no longer counted his kills.

He had tried during the first year.

Back when the numbers had seemed important.

Back when the priests had praised every victory and presented the children with ceremonial records of their achievements.

After a while, the numbers had become meaningless.

One monster.

Ten.

A hundred.

An entire swarm.

Kade could remember the battles.

He could remember particular wounds.

He could remember the names of soldiers who had died beside him.

But the creatures themselves blurred together.

There were always more.

Always another breach.

Always another Wave rising somewhere beyond the borders of a kingdom that had finally begun rebuilding after the last one.

And always another adult explaining that the Heroes were Wysteria’s greatest blessing.

Kade had learned to hate that sentence.

 II. The Eight-Year Victory

The battlefield lay along the eastern frontier of Yollandia.

Before the Wave, the region had been a collection of farming settlements, low wooded hills, and fortified roads carrying grain toward the larger cities.

Now much of it was burning.

A reddish fracture hung above the valley.

It wasn’t a crack in the sky in any ordinary sense.

It was a wound in the world’s structure, an opening through which the Wave poured creatures that had no place beneath Wysteria’s sun.

The fracture pulsed.

With each pulse, the ground trembled.

Monsters emerged from the red darkness and spilled across the fields.

Some ran.

Some crawled.

Some unfolded themselves into shapes that seemed to require more space than their bodies possessed.

A line of Yollandian infantry held the eastern road.

Beyond them, archers and enchanted artillery crews prepared their next volleys.

The soldiers were brave.

They were also exhausted.

The Wave had struck before dawn.

It was now well into the afternoon.

The outer villages had been evacuated, but the road behind the infantry remained crowded with supply wagons, wounded soldiers, and civilians who had been unable to travel as quickly as the military planners had hoped.

The line could not afford to break.

Kade knew that.

So did everyone else.

A horn sounded from the western ridge.

Three short notes.

Then one long.

The signal for a coordinated push.

Kade looked toward the ruined barricade.

A captain stood beside the surviving members of a battered infantry company.

His left arm was bandaged.

Blood had soaked through the cloth.

He was still holding a sword.

Kade approached.

”Captain.”

The man turned.

”Lord Gauntlet!”

Kade sighed.

”We’re going to have to work on that.”

The officer attempted a smile.

It didn’t last.

”Your orders?”

Kade looked past him.

The remaining infantry were struggling to keep their formation intact.

Several carried cracked shields.

Others had lost helmets.

An exhausted healer knelt beside a wounded spearman, pressing both hands against a terrible injury while pale light flickered between her fingers.

The healer was shaking.

Kade recognized the signs.

She was almost out of strength.

He looked back at the captain.

”Pull your people behind the second barricade.”

The man stiffened.

”Hero, if we abandon this position—”

”You’re not abandoning it.”

Kade pointed toward the road.

”You’re moving before you lose half your company holding a pile of broken wood.”

The captain hesitated.

Kade continued.

”The Hammer’s taking the central approach. The Firearm Guardian has the western slope. Ayame’s setting a barrier across the withdrawal lane.”

The officer stared.

”Then who’s holding this section?”

Kade smiled.

The captain closed his eyes.

”...You.”

”Congratulations. You understand the plan.”

”Hero—”

”Kade.”

The man sighed.

”Kade. There are hundreds of them.”

The Gauntlet Hero glanced toward the approaching swarm.

”Yeah.”

”Possibly more.”

”Probably.”

”And you intend to hold this section alone?”

Kade raised one gauntleted hand.

Flexed his fingers.

Then looked toward the captain.

”Not alone. Your archers are staying behind the second line, and I’d appreciate it if they didn’t shoot me in the back.”

The captain stared.

Kade continued.

”That happened last month. Very rude.”

Despite everything, the man let out a startled laugh.

Kade’s expression softened.

”Get your people out.”

The captain looked toward the exhausted infantry.

Then nodded.

”Understood.”

He turned.

”SECOND COMPANY! ORDERLY WITHDRAWAL! WOUNDED FIRST!”

The line began moving.

Kade stepped forward.

His boots sank into the blood-soaked earth.

The Gauntlets hummed.

Pale symbols shifted across their reinforced surfaces.

The System responded to the rising concentration of enemies.

HOLY GAUNTLET — COMBAT STATUS

HOSTILE WAVE CONTACTS: MULTIPLE GAUNTLET INTEGRITY: STABLE SOUL RESONANCE: ELEVATED IMPACT FORM: AVAILABLE WARNING: EXTENDED COMBAT EXPOSURE

Kade glanced at the warning.

Then snorted.

”Eight years, and you’re still telling me combat is dangerous.”

The Gauntlets did not answer.

They rarely appreciated his sense of humor.

The first monster reached him.

Kade punched it through the chest.

The second tried to leap over his shoulder.

He caught its leg, turned, and slammed it into the third.

Both broke against the ground.

A fourth lunged.

He ducked.

Its claws passed over his head.

Kade stepped forward and drove his fist beneath its jaw.

The impact shattered its skull.

Black blood splashed across his chest.

A fifth creature struck his side.

He staggered.

Its claws scraped against the reinforced plates of his left gauntlet.

Kade caught its wrist.

Twisted.

Then tore the limb free at the joint.

The creature screamed.

He struck it once.

It fell.

More came.

Dozens.

Then scores.

The road became a narrow passage of bodies and ash.

Kade moved through them.

Not elegantly.

Not beautifully.

There was nothing beautiful about close-quarters combat after eight years of learning exactly how much force it took to destroy something that did not belong in the living world.

He fought with short movements.

Hard pivots.

Precise footwork.

Every step placed him where he could avoid one attack and answer another.

He used broken shields as obstacles.

Corpses as barriers.

The narrowest parts of the road as places to prevent the swarm from surrounding him.

When the monsters tried to climb over one another, he broke the front rank and sent the bodies tumbling backward.

When larger creatures appeared, he attacked the joints supporting their weight.

When smaller ones rushed toward the infantry, he intercepted them before they reached the withdrawal corridor.

His Gauntlets flashed again and again.

Each impact shook the air.

The ground became a broken field of craters.

And behind him, the soldiers continued withdrawing.

One by one.

Wounded men carried between companions.

Archers covering their retreat.

Healers stumbling toward the second barricade.

Kade didn’t look back.

He trusted them to do their part.

He needed to do his.

A monster with three armored heads emerged from the smoke.

It was almost twice his height.

Its shoulders were covered in overlapping plates of black bone.

One head opened its jaws and began gathering crimson light.

Kade saw the attack forming.

He lowered his center of gravity.

Then ran forward.

The creature fired.

A beam of burning red energy struck the road behind him.

Stone exploded.

Kade slipped beneath its second head.

His left fist struck the joint beneath its armored shoulder.

The Gauntlet’s impact matrix flared.

The joint broke.

The creature collapsed sideways.

Kade stepped onto its fallen limb.

Launched himself upward.

And drove both fists into the base of the central skull.

The impact cracked the armor.

The monster screamed.

He struck again.

And again.

Until the red light inside its mouth flickered out.

Then he jumped clear.

The body collapsed across the road, blocking the passage behind it.

Kade landed in a crouch.

He exhaled.

”...There.”

He looked toward the swarm gathering behind the corpse.

”Traffic control.”

Then a familiar voice sounded through the communication charm secured near his collar.

”Bher, are you finished renovating the road?”

Kade grinned.

”Ayame.”

”That wasn’t an answer.”

”I’m improving the infrastructure.”

”You’ve destroyed forty meters of it.”

”Then there’s plenty of room for improvement.”

A pause.

Then Ayame answered with profound weariness.

”I am beginning to understand why nobody lets you attend civil engineering meetings.”

Kade laughed.

Then glanced toward the sky.

Above the battlefield, golden letters appeared in a great arc.

A barrier began forming across the withdrawal corridor.

Ayame’s work.

He recognized the structure immediately.

The lines were careful.

Interlocking.

Built to absorb the pressure of anything that attempted to cross the protected route.

The Book Hero had become extraordinarily good at this.

Kade watched the barrier settle into place.

Then spoke into the charm.

”Second Company clear?”

”Last wounded are crossing now.”

”Good.”

”Hammer is ready. Elias has the western approach.”

”Excellent.”

”Kade.”

He stopped smiling.

Ayame’s voice had changed.

”Do not stand directly beneath the rupture when it collapses this time.”

He considered that.

Then looked upward.

”...How directly?”

”BHER.”

”Just clarifying.”

”You required three days of treatment after the last incident.”

”Two and a half.”

”THREE.”

Kade sighed.

”Fine.”

A pause.

Then he added:

”Love you too, Fubuki.”

The response came immediately.

”I am going to write that you died of stupidity.”

He grinned.

”Make the handwriting nice.”

Then the next surge hit.

And Kade returned to work.

III. Seventeen Names, Not Seventeen Titles

There were seventeen of them.

Seventeen children who had been stolen eight years earlier.

Seventeen sacred weapons awakened in the hands of people too young to understand the world that had taken them.

The priests had called them a generation.

The royal courts had called them a blessing.

Military commanders called them strategic assets.

The churches called them living proof that the heavens had not abandoned Wysteria.

The Heroes themselves had considerably less flattering names for the arrangement.

Most of those names were not suitable for public ceremonies.

Eight years had changed them.

Ayame Fubuki was eighteen now.

Her Holy Book had become one of the most valuable tools in the entire coalition.

It could record information that ordinary witnesses might miss.

Translate complicated magical structures into readable patterns.

Form barriers.

Establish bindings.

And preserve details from battles that armies would otherwise remember only through unreliable reports and incomplete casualty lists.

Ayame had learned to use all of those abilities.

She had also developed a remarkably extensive vocabulary for describing the incompetence of military officers who confused confidence with intelligence.

Kade considered this one of her finest qualities.

Elias Vale was twenty-two.

The Guardian Firearm had grown into a terrifyingly versatile weapon under his care.

The boy who had once stood trembling in the summoning chamber now moved through combat with a controlled precision that made experienced marksmen go quiet.

He understood lines of fire.

Movement.

Cover.

Ammunition expenditure.

The difference between hitting a monster and actually stopping it.

And the uncomfortable fact that sometimes the most important shot in a battle was the one a person chose not to take.

Elias spoke less than Kade.

Considerably less.

But when he did speak, people listened.

The oldest members of the generation were twenty-four.

The youngest, Ayame, was eighteen.

None of them had escaped the years.

Some carried terrible scars.

Others possessed injuries that had healed badly even beneath powerful magic.

Several had nightmares.

A few could no longer tolerate loud bells.

One refused to enter a cathedral unless another Hero accompanied her.

Another had stopped attending ceremonies altogether after discovering that the priests had commissioned a statue of him while he was still recovering from a wound that had nearly killed him.

They had learned how to march.

How to fight.

How to identify the warning signs before a Wave breach.

How to evacuate civilians through streets that were already falling apart.

How to carry a wounded companion without interfering with a sacred weapon’s bond.

How to survive nights when the healers were exhausted and the monsters had not stopped coming.

They had learned a great many things no child should ever have needed to know.

But they had also learned something else.

Something Wysteria’s rulers had never intended them to understand.

And it had changed everything.

The discovery had come during their third year.

Kade remembered it clearly.

He had been fifteen.

Ayame had been thirteen.

Elias had been seventeen.

And the three of them had been sitting in a cathedral archive while a senior cleric explained the historical continuity of the sacred weapons.

It had been an exceptionally boring lecture.

At least until Ayame began asking questions.

The archive itself was enormous.

Stone walls.

Tall bookshelves.

Golden lamps hanging from chains.

Hundreds of years of records kept beneath the cathedral’s central sanctum.

The cleric stood beside an enormous register.

”The sacred Weapons cannot be permitted to remain without bearers during an active period of Waves,” he explained.

Ayame looked up.

”Why?”

The man smiled.

”Because the world’s stability depends upon their continued presence.”

She nodded slowly.

”And what happens if a bearer dies?”

The cleric hesitated.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from NovelPhoenix; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

”That is an unfortunate possibility.”

Kade leaned back in his chair.

Elias watched quietly.

Ayame continued.

”But what happens?”

”The Weapon returns to the sacred summoning framework.”

”And?”

The man looked toward the register.

”Another suitable bearer must be called.”

Silence.

Kade stopped leaning back.

Elias’s expression changed.

Ayame stared.

”...Called?”

”Yes.”

”From where?”

The cleric seemed surprised by the question.

”From beyond the boundaries of Wysteria, naturally.”

Ayame looked down at the register.

Then back at him.

”How old?”

The cleric blinked.

”Pardon?”

”How old are the replacements?”

A pause.

”The sacred Weapons select compatible souls.”

”That’s not what I asked.”

Kade looked toward her.

Ayame’s voice had gone very quiet.

”How old?”

The cleric shifted uncomfortably.

”The age of the chosen soul is not the primary consideration.”

Elias spoke for the first time.

”Answer her.”

The man turned.

The Guardian Firearm rested beside Elias’s chair.

He wasn’t touching it.

He didn’t need to.

The cleric swallowed.

”The summoned are traditionally young.”

Kade felt something cold settle inside his chest.

”How young?”

The man hesitated.

Then answered.

”Children are often the most compatible.”

Nobody moved.

Kade stared.

A terrible silence spread across the table.

He remembered Ayame looking down at her hands.

Small hands.

Still not fully grown.

He remembered Elias’s jaw tightening.

He remembered the enormous register lying open between them.

Its pages were filled with titles.

Names.

Dates.

Deaths.

Successions.

The same weapons passing from one bearer to the next.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The priest had called it continuity.

Kade had stared at the page.

Then looked up.

”So when one of us dies...”

The cleric nodded solemnly.

”The sacred succession ensures that Wysteria is not left defenseless.”

Kade’s expression went blank.

”...You steal another kid.”

The man stiffened.

”That is an inaccurate description of a holy—”

”You steal another kid.”

”Kade, you must understand—”

”Another kid.”

His voice rose.

”Somebody who was eating dinner. Or walking home from school. Or playing with their friend.”

The cleric stepped backward.

Kade stood.

His chair scraped across the floor.

”You take them.”

The man raised both hands.

”The sacred Weapons choose—”

”YOU DO THE SUMMONING!”

Silence crashed through the archive.

Elias rose slowly.

Ayame closed the register.

The sound of its cover striking the table seemed unbearably loud.

Kade’s Gauntlets flickered into a more active configuration around his hands.

The cleric went pale.

For one dreadful instant, Kade wanted to hit him.

Not because the man could change what had happened.

Not because a punch would bring the stolen children home.

But because the cleric stood there speaking about replacing dead children as though he were discussing broken tools.

Kade’s hands trembled.

Then Elias spoke.

”Kade.”

Just his name.

Nothing more.

Kade closed his eyes.

He breathed.

Once.

Twice.

Then he stepped away from the table.

The Gauntlets dimmed.

The cleric looked relieved.

Kade hated that too.

Ayame rose.

Her face was expressionless.

She looked toward the man.

”Are there records of every replacement summoning?”

The cleric nodded uncertainly.

”Yes.”

”Good.”

She picked up her Book.

”Then I want to see them.”

 They found the records.

That was the worst part.

Not because the records were hidden particularly well.

They weren’t.

The previous generations were preserved in ceremonial histories.

The Weapons were celebrated.

The succession lines were praised.

The repeated summoning of children had been treated as an ordinary necessity for so long that entire sections of the archives recorded it without shame.

A bearer died.

The Weapon returned.

Another summoning was authorized.

Another child arrived.

A new Hero took the fallen one’s place.

The war continued.

Sometimes the replacement came within days.

Sometimes weeks.

Occasionally, when the System required more time to identify a compatible soul, the kingdoms endured longer periods without the missing Weapon.

The records called these interruptions strategic vulnerabilities.

Ayame read them until her hands began shaking.

Elias studied the entries in silence.

Kade stood beside the table.

And when the three finally left the archive, he didn’t speak for almost an hour.

That night, the Heroes gathered in a room far away from the cathedral.

No priests.

No nobles.

No commanders.

Just seventeen children sitting together while the oldest tried to make the youngest understand something that none of them wanted to believe.

Ayame brought copies of the records.

Elias explained what the succession procedure meant.

Kade sat against the wall.

His Gauntlets rested across his knees.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Then the Dagger Hero began crying.

Someone beside her took her hand.

The Hammer Hero stared at the floor.

The Staff Hero asked whether the records could be wrong.

Ayame shook her head.

”No.”

A silence followed.

Then somebody asked the question that had been hanging over all of them.

”So if we die...”

Elias answered.

”Someone else comes.”

Another pause.

”Another kid?”

Ayame nodded.

”Yes.”

The youngest among them lowered her face into her hands.

Kade closed his eyes.

He thought of Ranmei.

Of the shrine road.

Of Kuroha reaching through the golden circle.

He remembered being twelve.

Remembered standing in the summoning chamber while a little girl cried for her mother.

He looked around the room.

Seventeen children.

Some fifteen.

Some thirteen.

Some younger.

The oldest not yet grown enough to look comfortable carrying the responsibilities placed upon them.

And every one of them understood.

Dying wouldn’t necessarily end the system that had stolen them.

It would simply create a vacancy.

A new name.

A new child.

Another family waiting beside another empty road.

Kade stood.

Everyone looked toward him.

He didn’t make a grand speech.

He had never been particularly good at those.

He simply looked at the others and said:

”Then nobody dies.”

Silence.

The Katana Hero frowned.

”Kade—”

”I’m serious.”

The Hammer Hero rubbed his face.

”You can’t just decide that.”

”Watch me.”

Ayame looked up.

Her eyes were red.

”Kade.”

He turned toward her.

She held the records against her chest.

”We can’t guarantee that.”

”I know.”

”Some of these Waves have nearly killed us already.”

”I know.”

”Eventually—”

”Don’t.”

She stopped.

Kade looked around the room.

His voice grew steadier.

”We’ve spent three years doing what they tell us. Fighting where they send us. Getting hurt. Getting patched up. Being dragged back into the next battle.”

Nobody interrupted.

”And every time they talk about us, they act like the Weapons are the important part.”

He looked toward his Gauntlets.

”Like if one of us breaks, they can just go get another.”

Elias lowered his eyes.

Kade continued.

”Well, they can’t.”

The room was quiet.

He looked at each of them in turn.

”They don’t get another kid because I decided to stop fighting.”

A pause.

”They don’t get another kid because somebody thought I was replaceable.”

His hands tightened.

”And they sure as hell don’t get one because we weren’t willing to help each other.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the Dagger Hero raised her head.

”...What do we do?”

Kade looked toward Elias.

Then Ayame.

Then the others.

”We stay alive.”

The Hammer Hero let out a humorless laugh.

”That’s your plan?”

”Part of it.”

”And the other part?”

Kade’s expression hardened.

”We find out why the Waves keep coming.”

Ayame looked up.

He continued.

”And then we stop them.”

A long silence followed.

Then Elias spoke.

”Not just defend against them?”

Kade shook his head.

”No.”

Ayame looked toward her Book.

The records lay open before her.

Countless names.

Generations of stolen children.

An endless succession of Heroes who had been praised, used, buried, and replaced.

She slowly closed the cover.

”...Then we need to understand the summoning framework.”

Elias nodded.

”And the Waves.”

The Staff Hero leaned forward.

”And the Weapons.”

Others began speaking.

Not all at once.

Not chaotically.

For the first time since their arrival, the children were discussing something that belonged to them.

Not an order from the throne.

Not a command from a priest.

A choice.

A terrible, difficult choice.

They would fight because the people of Wysteria would die if they didn’t.

But they would not accept being treated as a renewable supply of bodies.

They would protect one another.

They would keep each other alive.

And somehow, someday, they would find a way to end the Waves themselves.

Kade looked around the room.

Seventeen children.

Seventeen sacred weapons.

One promise.

Nobody dies.

Not because they were immortal.

Not because they believed they could never lose.

But because if one of them fell, another child would be stolen.

And none of them could bear the thought.

That night, the current generation of Heroes began its rebellion.

Not by storming a palace.

Not by overthrowing a king.

But by refusing to make room for their replacements.

IV. The Ones Who Refused to Fall

Five years had passed since that night.

Five years of trying to honor an impossible promise.

And now, on Yollandia’s eastern frontier, the Hammer Hero was about to die.

Kade didn’t know it yet.

He was still fighting along the ruined road when the first warning came through his communication charm.

”All forward units, central approach compromised! Heavy Wave manifestation breaking through the second barricade!”

Kade tore his fist free from a creature’s shattered armor.

He turned.

Across the valley, something enormous had emerged from the rupture.

It resembled a siege beast built from the remains of several different monsters.

Six massive legs supported a body covered in jagged black plates. Its head was little more than a fortified opening filled with moving teeth.

Long bone structures protruded from its back, each carrying clusters of smaller creatures that clung to the larger monster like parasites.

The thing advanced through the broken fields.

Every step shook the ground.

Kade watched it.

”...Well, that’s new.”

Then the Hammer Hero struck it.

The impact lit the valley.

A tremendous wave of golden force expanded from the creature’s forward legs as the sacred hammer collided with its armor.

The nearest infantry dropped behind their shields.

Dust rose.

Stone broke.

And for an instant, the enormous monster stopped moving.

Kade grinned.

”Good hit!”

Then the creature’s body split open.

Not from the Hammer’s attack.

From inside.

A second mouth unfolded beneath the first.

A vast tendril of hardened bone erupted from the opening and struck the Hammer Hero before he could withdraw.

The blow sent him flying.

He crashed through the remains of a stone wall.

The ground shook.

Kade’s grin vanished.

”...Hammer?”

No answer.

He raised his communication charm.

”Hammer, report.”

Static crackled.

Then a faint, ragged voice answered.

”Still... here.”

Kade’s stomach tightened.

He knew that voice.

He knew what it meant when one of them sounded like that.

”Can you move?”

A pause.

”Working... on it.”

Kade looked toward the central approach.

The enormous monster was advancing.

Beyond it, smaller creatures poured through the broken defensive line.

The Hammer Hero lay somewhere among the shattered stones.

Kade closed his eyes for half a heartbeat.

Then spoke.

”Ayame.”

Her response came immediately.

”I see it.”

”Get me a route.”

”Kade, you’re holding the eastern withdrawal corridor.”

”Second Company is clear.”

”The eastern swarm isn’t.”

”Then I’ll leave them something to think about.”

She paused.

He could hear the frustration in her silence.

Then she answered.

”Elias, I need suppression across the eastern approach. Kade is transferring to Hammer’s position.”

Elias replied through the charm.

”Already moving.”

Kade grinned.

”Love when you two read my mind.”

Ayame’s answer was sharp.

”There isn’t much in there to read.”

”Rude.”

”Accurate.”

He laughed once.

Then ran.

The Gauntlets shifted.

Reinforced plates moved around his forearms, locking into a configuration designed to endure greater force at the point of impact.

Pale symbols flared across his wrists.

Kade lowered his shoulders.

The first monster attempted to intercept him.

He drove through it.

His fist struck its chest.

The creature folded backward and struck two others.

Kade vaulted over the bodies.

Another leaped from the side.

He caught its head between both hands and twisted.

The thing collapsed.

He kept moving.

A third creature charged.

Then a sharp report cracked across the battlefield.

The monster’s head exploded.

Kade didn’t look back.

”Thanks, Elias!”

The Guardian Firearm’s reply came through the charm.

”Keep running.”

”Already doing that!”

”Then stop talking.”

”Terrible bedside manner.”

Another shot rang out.

A creature fell.

Kade smiled despite himself.

Then the central battlefield opened before him.

The Hammer Hero’s impact had damaged the enormous monster.

One of its forward legs hung at an unnatural angle.

Several armor plates had shattered.

But the creature was still moving.

And Hammer lay beneath the remains of the collapsed wall.

Kade saw him.

His stomach dropped.

The man’s sacred weapon rested beside him, half-buried in rubble.

One arm was twisted beneath his body.

Blood stained the stones.

His chest rose and fell in short, terrible movements.

For a moment, Kade was fifteen again.

Standing in a cathedral archive.

Staring at a page that explained how another child would be summoned when a Hero died.

No.

He accelerated.

A creature lunged from the rubble.

Kade punched it aside.

Another attempted to reach Hammer.

He caught it around the throat.

The monster screamed.

Kade drove its head through the nearest wall.

Then he dropped beside his friend.

”Hey.”

The Hammer Hero opened his eyes.

Barely.

Kade forced a smile.

”You look terrible.”

The man coughed.

Blood stained his lips.

”...You always... say that.”

”Because you keep proving me right.”

A weak, painful laugh escaped him.

Kade glanced at the injuries.

His expression hardened.

”Can you stand?”

The Hammer Hero tried.

A strangled sound escaped him.

He stopped.

Kade caught his shoulder.

”Don’t.”

The man looked at him.

”...Sorry.”

Kade stared.

Then shook his head.

”Don’t start.”

He reached for the communication charm.

”Ayame, I found him. Severe injuries. He’s conscious, but he isn’t moving under his own power.”

Her answer came immediately.

”I have his signal. Do not move him until I stabilize the internal damage.”

Kade looked toward the enormous monster.

It was turning.

The second mouth opened.

Its bone tendrils began lifting.

Kade’s eyes narrowed.

”Ayame.”

”I know.”

”That thing’s coming.”

”I KNOW.”

The Holy Book’s light appeared above the rubble.

Golden script unfolded across the air, forming a lattice of protective lines around the fallen Hero.

Kade felt the pressure change.

Ayame’s magic settled over the injured man.

The System registered the intervention.

The Hammer Hero gasped.

Then his breathing became slightly steadier.

Not normal.

Not safe.

But steadier.

Kade looked down.

”See?”

His friend blinked.

”What?”

”You’re not allowed to die.”

The Hammer Hero attempted a smile.

”...Bossy bastard.”

”Frequently.”

A terrible roar shook the ruins.

Kade looked up.

The enormous monster was almost upon them.

He rose.

Then stepped between the creature and his friend.

The Hammer Hero lifted his uninjured hand.

”Kade...”

”Yeah?”

”...Don’t do anything stupid.”

Kade considered that.

Then smiled.

”Terrible time to ask.”

He turned toward the advancing monster.

Raised both Gauntlets.

And planted his feet.

The first tendril struck him like a falling tower.

Kade caught it with both hands.

The impact drove his boots through the shattered stone.

His knees bent.

Pain exploded through his shoulders.

The Gauntlets screamed.

He gritted his teeth.

The enormous monster pushed forward.

Kade’s arms trembled.

He could feel the pressure building through the articulated supports of his weapons.

The creature’s weight was too great.

Not even the Holy Gauntlets could simply make him immune to force.

His boots sank deeper.

The ruined ground cracked.

He looked toward the injured Hammer Hero.

The protective script around him was still forming.

Ayame needed more time.

Kade exhaled.

Then smiled through clenched teeth.

”All right.”

He shifted his grip.

The tendril twisted.

The monster’s forward armor shifted slightly as its attack lost alignment.

Kade stepped to one side, allowing the force to pass rather than trying to stop all of it.

The enormous limb struck the ground beside him.

He released it.

Pivoted.

And drove his right fist into the exposed joint.

The impact broke the outer armor.

The creature roared.

Kade struck again.

Another crack.

Then a third time.

The joint ruptured.

The tendril collapsed.

Black fluid poured across the stones.

Kade staggered backward.

His right shoulder burned.

He ignored it.

The creature opened its lower mouth.

Crimson light gathered between its teeth.

Kade stared.

”...Oh, that’s unpleasant.”

Ayame’s voice came through the charm.

”Kade, MOVE!”

He looked toward the Hammer Hero.

Still lying beneath the barrier.

Still unable to move.

Kade shook his head.

”No.”

”KADE!”

He raised his Gauntlets.

The creature fired.

A column of red light struck him.

The impact swallowed the space between the ruins.

Stone vaporized.

A shock wave rolled outward, throwing debris across the battlefield.

The nearest surviving soldiers dropped behind the second barricade.

Elias swore through the communication charm.

Ayame’s Book flashed with warning messages.

And for one dreadful instant, Kade’s signal disappeared beneath the noise.

Then the red light began breaking apart.

Not fading.

Breaking.

Golden cracks spread through the beam.

One.

Three.

A dozen.

The concentrated magic split around something standing at its center.

Kade Bher emerged from the brilliance with both arms crossed before his face.

His boots scraped across the ruined ground.

Smoke rose from the Gauntlets.

Blood ran down one side of his forehead.

His sleeves had burned away beneath the pressure.

But he was still standing.

And behind him, Ayame’s barrier remained intact.

He lowered his arms.

Looked toward the monster.

Then spat blood onto the stones.

”...My turn.”

The Gauntlets flared.

Kade ran.

He moved through the lingering energy before the creature could recover.

Its damaged forward leg buckled as he struck the knee.

The enormous body tilted.

Kade continued forward.

He leaped onto the broken armor.

Climbed the moving creature with short, brutal movements.

Then reached the opening beneath its primary skull.

He planted his feet against a ridge of bone.

Pulled back his right fist.

And concentrated every available measure of force into a single point.

The Gauntlet’s markings turned white.

Kade’s teeth clenched.

”GET.”

He struck.

The first impact shattered the outer armor.

”OFF.”

The second drove through the exposed structure.

”MY.”

The third ruptured the creature’s inner protective shell.

”FRIEND!”

The fourth punch detonated inside the monster’s skull.

Golden-white force erupted through the back of its head.

The entire creature convulsed.

Its legs folded.

Kade kicked away from the collapsing body.

He landed badly.

One knee struck the ground.

Pain shot through his shoulder.

He hissed.

Then forced himself upright.

The enormous monster fell across the ruined road.

Its body struck the ground with a tremendous crash.

Dust rose around the wreckage.

For several seconds, the battlefield seemed to hold its breath.

Then the creature began dissolving.

Black ash lifted from its armor.

The six legs collapsed inward.

The skull cracked.

And the vast thing that had nearly killed one of Wysteria’s sacred Heroes vanished into the same darkness from which it had emerged.

Kade stood among the ruins.

Breathing hard.

His arms trembled.

His Gauntlets flickered.

Then he turned.

Ayame’s barrier glowed around the Hammer Hero.

The wounded man was still alive.

Kade exhaled.

”...Good.”

His knees nearly buckled.

He caught himself against a broken wall.

Then laughed.

Just once.

A ragged, exhausted sound.

”Good.”

 V. Healing Is Not Mercy

They won the Wave before sunset.

The final breach collapsed after the coordinated attack from the surviving Heroes.

The Staff Hero stabilized the surrounding magical field.

The Book Hero established the binding structure required to prevent the rupture from widening again.

The Guardian Firearm suppressed the creatures attempting to interfere.

The Vassal Weapons broke the remaining concentrations of hostile manifestations.

And Kade, despite his injuries, helped destroy the final armored creature protecting the center of the fracture.

The sky closed.

The red light faded.

The ground stopped shaking.

For a moment, the valley was silent.

Then the surviving soldiers began cheering.

The sound spread along the defensive line.

Men and women raised their weapons.

A wounded captain fell to his knees and wept.

Some soldiers embraced.

Others simply sat down wherever they stood, too exhausted to celebrate properly.

The Wave had been defeated.

Again.

Eight years.

Every Wave the current generation had fought had ended in victory.

No Hero had died.

The kingdoms would celebrate another miracle.

The royal courts would issue proclamations.

The churches would ring their bells.

The people would thank the sacred Weapons.

And the battlefield would still need burying.

Kade knew that.

He stood at the edge of the ruined road, watching the medics move between the wounded.

The victory had not saved everyone.

It never did.

A Yollandian infantry company had lost nearly a third of its strength before the Heroes could relieve its position.

The western artillery crews had suffered casualties when the first rupture shifted unexpectedly.

Several civilians had died during the evacuation.

One healer had exhausted herself trying to keep a wounded soldier alive and now lay unconscious beside the person she’d saved.

The road was covered in broken equipment.

Shattered shields.

Discarded helmets.

Weapons whose owners would never retrieve them.

Kade looked toward the second barricade.

The captain he’d spoken with earlier was sitting beside a row of covered bodies.

His left arm had been properly bandaged.

His face was gray with exhaustion.

Kade approached.

The man looked up.

For a moment, he seemed about to stand.

Then Kade shook his head.

”Don’t.”

The captain hesitated.

Then remained seated.

”Hero.”

”Kade.”

The man gave a tired smile.

”...Kade.”

The Gauntlet Hero looked toward the covered bodies.

”How many?”

The captain’s expression tightened.

He gave the number.

Kade closed his eyes.

A long silence followed.

Then the captain said:

”We held.”

Kade nodded.

”Yeah.”

”The road remained open.”

”Yes.”

”The civilians got through.”

Kade looked toward the distant evacuation route.

Then nodded again.

”They did.”

The captain lowered his eyes.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then the man whispered:

”It still doesn’t feel like a victory.”

Kade looked down at him.

The captain was older.

Not elderly.

But old enough to have children.

Old enough to remember a life before this particular battle.

He had probably been a soldier long before Kade ever arrived in Wysteria.

And yet, at this moment, he looked just as tired as the Heroes.

Kade sat beside him.

The captain blinked.

”...Hero?”

”Don’t.”

The man gave a faint, humorless laugh.

Kade looked toward the bodies.

Then spoke quietly.

”You’re allowed to be glad we won.”

A pause.

”You’re also allowed to hate what it cost.”

The captain lowered his head.

His shoulders began shaking.

Kade didn’t say anything else.

He simply sat there.

The sun continued setting beyond the ruined fields.

And the people who had survived another Wave began the terrible work of counting those who had not.

The field hospital had been established inside a damaged stone monastery.

Its walls were old and thick enough to offer reasonable protection, and the surviving monks had surrendered their sleeping quarters, dining hall, and storage rooms to the medical staff without hesitation.

The place smelled of blood.

Clean water.

Herbal medicine.

Burned cloth.

And the sharp, unmistakable odor of magical healing.

Kade hated that smell.

He had learned to associate it with pain that the healers could reduce but never entirely erase.

He entered the treatment chamber with one arm held close to his body.

Ayame was already there.

Her Book rested on a table beside her.

Several pages glimmered faintly as she reviewed the medical notes.

Elias sat nearby, cleaning the Guardian Firearm with precise, mechanical movements.

The Hammer Hero lay on a reinforced bed.

Alive.

Barely.

His chest was bandaged.

His left arm had been immobilized.

A pale healing circle glowed beneath the bed while two exhausted priests worked to stabilize the damage.

Kade stopped in the doorway.

”Well.”

Elias looked up.

His expression darkened.

”Oh, good. The idiot survived.”

Kade smiled.

”Missed you too.”

Ayame slowly turned.

Her face was expressionless.

That was rarely a good sign.

”Kade.”

”Fubuki.”

”Sit down.”

He raised an eyebrow.

”Hello to you too.”

”Sit.”

”Very demanding.”

”Kade.”

He sighed.

Then sat.

Ayame approached.

She took one look at his shoulder.

Then closed her eyes.

”How bad?”

”Could be worse.”

”That wasn’t the question.”

He considered that.

Then shrugged.

Pain shot through his arm.

He winced.

Ayame stared.

Elias slowly lowered his firearm.

”...You are an extraordinary moron.”

”Thank you.”

”Not a compliment.”

”I’ll treasure it anyway.”

Ayame called for a healer.

Kade protested.

She ignored him.

The healer examined the injury.

A dislocated shoulder.

Severe bruising.

Damage to several muscles.

Burns from the energy attack.

And enough accumulated strain that the healer looked at Kade with the exhausted contempt of a person who had spent too many years treating people who refused to stop getting hurt.

”How long have you been fighting with this?”

Kade considered the question.

”...Define fighting.”

The healer stared.

Ayame made a noise of profound personal suffering.

Elias sighed.

The healer reached for Kade’s arm.

He looked at her.

”Please be gentle.”

She smiled.

It was not a reassuring smile.

”Of course, Hero.”

Then she began the treatment.

Kade’s shout echoed through the monastery.

Somewhere in the adjoining room, the Dagger Hero burst out laughing.

 Healing magic was powerful.

It could close wounds that would otherwise have killed ordinary people.

It could stabilize damaged organs.

Repair broken bones.

Reduce infection.

And, in the hands of exceptionally skilled practitioners, restore injuries that would have left permanent disabilities in worlds without such magic.

But healing was not the same as rest.

Kade had learned that the hard way.

Bones could be mended while the surrounding muscles remained exhausted.

Blood could be replaced only so quickly.

A healed wound could still ache.

And the pain of having one’s body repaired through concentrated magical intervention was not always particularly pleasant.

The priests had a habit of telling wounded Heroes that their injuries were signs of sacred devotion.

Kade had once responded by asking whether sacred devotion could fetch him a pillow.

The priest had not appreciated the question.

Kade had considered that unfortunate.

Now, eight years later, he was considerably less polite.

The healer finished stabilizing his shoulder.

Then stepped back.

”You are not returning to combat tomorrow.”

Kade blinked.

”That sounds optimistic.”

Ayame folded her arms.

”She’s serious.”

”So am I.”

”You need rest.”

”I know.”

Elias looked up.

”Then try doing it.”

Kade sighed.

”Everyone’s very aggressive today.”

Ayame stared.

He smiled weakly.

She did not smile back.

He looked away.

”...Fine.”

The healer nodded.

”Good.”

Then she moved toward the next patient.

Ayame sat beside him.

For a while, neither spoke.

Across the room, the Hammer Hero remained unconscious.

Kade watched the steady rise and fall of his friend’s chest.

Then asked quietly:

”He’s going to make it?”

Ayame followed his gaze.

Her expression softened.

”The healers believe so.”

Kade exhaled.

A long, slow breath.

”Good.”

She looked toward him.

”Kade.”

”Hm?”

”You nearly died too.”

He smiled faintly.

”Not my first attempt.”

”That’s not funny.”

”Didn’t say it was.”

A pause followed.

Ayame lowered her eyes.

For several seconds, she seemed to be struggling with something.

Then she spoke.

”I saw your signal disappear.”

Kade looked at her.

The Book Hero’s hands tightened around the edge of her robe.

”After the creature fired.”

He said nothing.

”I couldn’t tell whether you were alive.”

Her voice remained controlled.

But Kade knew her too well.

He could hear what it cost her to say the words.

For a moment, he remembered the summoning chamber.

A little girl holding a Book too heavy for her hands.

A twelve-year-old boy promising that they would find a way home.

Eight years had passed.

Ayame was eighteen now.

A formidable magician.

A brilliant analyst.

One of the most important people in Wysteria’s defense.

And still, when she spoke about almost losing him, Kade could hear the frightened child she’d once been.

He looked down.

”...Sorry.”

Ayame turned toward him.

The word seemed to surprise her.

Kade continued.

”I didn’t mean to scare you.”

Her expression tightened.

”Then stop doing things that nearly kill you.”

He glanced toward the Hammer Hero.

Ayame followed his gaze.

A long silence passed.

Then she sighed.

”...I know.”

Kade nodded.

”Yeah.”

They sat together.

Two survivors.

Two stolen children who had become adults in a world that kept insisting they were blessed.

Elias finished cleaning the Firearm.

He set it aside.

Then looked toward them.

”Hammer’s alive.”

Kade nodded.

”So are we.”

Ayame closed her eyes.

”All seventeen.”

Elias looked toward the treatment chamber.

Then nodded.

”All seventeen.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Kade smiled faintly.

”Another day without replacements.”

Ayame looked at him.

Her expression changed.

Not into happiness.

Not quite.

Something quieter.

Something stubborn.

”...Another day.”

And for that one evening, it was enough.

VI. Victory, According to Wysteria

The following morning, a royal messenger arrived at the monastery.

He came dressed in polished ceremonial armor, accompanied by two attendants carrying sealed documents and a small wooden chest.

The messenger was young.

Perhaps twenty-five.

He looked extremely pleased with himself.

That alone was enough to make Kade suspicious.

The Gauntlet Hero sat on the edge of his bed with his injured arm secured in a support sling.

Ayame stood beside a table reviewing the previous day’s reports.

Elias was eating a piece of bread.

The Hammer Hero remained under medical supervision in another chamber.

The messenger bowed.

”Honored Heroes!”

Kade looked at him.

”...Morning.”

”By decree of His Majesty’s court, I bring the gratitude of the Yollandian Crown!”

Elias continued eating.

Ayame turned a page.

Kade raised an eyebrow.

”Does gratitude come with breakfast?”

The messenger hesitated.

”...My lord?”

”Just asking.”

The man recovered quickly.

”Your magnificent victory has preserved the eastern frontier!”

Kade glanced toward Ayame.

She didn’t look up.

The messenger continued.

”The kingdom rejoices! The royal court has ordered three days of thanksgiving, and a procession will be held in the capital to honor your deeds!”

Kade stared.

”Three days?”

”Yes!”

”Of thanksgiving?”

”Indeed!”

He considered that.

Then looked toward Elias.

The Guardian Firearm took another bite of bread.

Kade turned back.

”How many people are still missing from the villages?”

The messenger blinked.

”...Pardon?”

”The evacuation reports. How many civilians haven’t been accounted for?”

The man’s smile faltered.

”I don’t have those figures, my lord.”

”How many soldiers are still in treatment?”

”I—”

”How many families haven’t been told whether their people are alive?”

The room became quiet.

The messenger looked down at his documents.

Kade waited.

Then spoke more softly.

”I’m not asking to embarrass you.”

The young man glanced up.

Kade nodded toward the window.

Outside, the monastery courtyard was crowded with wounded soldiers.

Several were being helped between the medical buildings.

Others sat beneath the shade of the stone arcade, waiting for healers to assess whether they could travel.

A cart stood beside the outer wall.

It carried covered bodies.

”The Wave’s gone,” Kade said. ”That’s good.”

The messenger nodded slowly.

”But the battle isn’t finished for the people cleaning it up.”

A silence followed.

Then Ayame closed her Book.

”Please inform the court that the Heroes will remain available for recovery operations until the military and medical authorities determine our assistance is no longer required.”

The messenger bowed uncertainly.

”Of course, Holy Book Hero.”

She looked toward him.

”And request updated casualty reports.”

”Yes.”

”Accurate ones.”

The man’s expression became uncomfortable.

Ayame’s eyes narrowed.

”Not the ceremonial summary.”

He swallowed.

”...Understood.”

Elias finally spoke.

”Also tell them the western road is still damaged. Their engineers will need materials before civilian traffic can resume safely.”

The messenger nodded rapidly.

”Yes, Guardian.”

Kade regarded him for a moment.

Then sighed.

”And tell them we appreciate the thanks.”

The young man looked up.

His expression brightened.

”Of course!”

”But we’d appreciate the supplies more.”

The messenger nodded.

”I’ll convey that immediately.”

He bowed again.

Then retreated toward the doorway.

Just before he left, he turned.

”Oh! The Crown has also prepared commemorative medals.”

Kade stared.

Ayame slowly closed her eyes.

Elias stopped chewing.

A dreadful silence settled over the room.

Then Kade asked:

”...Can we eat them?”

The messenger blinked.

”No, my lord.”

”Can we use them to repair the road?”

”...No.”

”Medical supplies?”

”No.”

”Are they at least comfortable to sleep on?”

The messenger looked utterly bewildered.

Kade sighed.

”Tragic.”

Ayame pressed two fingers against her forehead.

Elias resumed eating.

The messenger fled.

When the door closed, Ayame turned toward Kade.

”Must you?”

He looked innocent.

”Must I what?”

”Torment every royal messenger who visits us?”

”He brought medals.”

”Yes.”

”I asked practical questions.”

”You asked whether we could eat them.”

”Still practical.”

Elias made a small sound.

Both turned.

He was laughing.

Quietly.

Almost unwillingly.

Kade grinned.

”There he is.”

Elias shook his head.

”You’re insufferable.”

”Frequently.”

Ayame sighed.

Then, despite herself, smiled.

For a moment, the hospital room felt almost peaceful.

Three people.

Bread.

A table.

A window overlooking a courtyard.

The sort of ordinary moment that should have belonged to young adults whose lives hadn’t been spent fighting monsters.

Then Ayame opened her Book.

The humor faded.

”I’ve finished comparing the last seven major Wave reports.”

Kade straightened.

Elias set down his bread.

”And?” Kade asked.

Ayame hesitated.

Then placed several pages on the table.

”The manifestations are changing.”

Kade looked at the records.

”How?”

”Their tactics. Their responses to our weapons. The way the breaches establish themselves.”

Elias leaned forward.

”Adapting?”

”Possibly.”

Kade studied the diagrams.

Lines crossed the pages.

Arrows indicated movement.

Small annotations identified the sequence in which particular manifestations had appeared.

Ayame continued.

”We keep winning.”

”Yes.”

”But the Waves keep coming.”

”Also yes.”

She looked toward them.

”And the pattern is becoming less random.”

Elias’s expression hardened.

Kade regarded the records.

For years, they’d treated the Waves as recurring catastrophes.

Terrible.

Unpredictable.

But fundamentally similar.

A rupture appeared.

Monsters emerged.

Armies fought.

The Heroes intervened.

The breach was eventually sealed or destroyed.

Wysteria celebrated.

Then everyone waited for the next one.

But Ayame had been studying the records.

Not just the battles they’d fought.

Earlier Waves.

Older generations.

Previous summoning cycles.

The relationships between the locations where breaches appeared and the kinds of creatures that came through them.

The evidence was incomplete.

Much of the historical record had been written by people more interested in praising victories than documenting what had actually happened.

But something was emerging.

A pattern.

Perhaps the first suggestion that the Waves were not merely disasters to be endured.

Perhaps they had a structure.

Perhaps there was a reason they kept coming.

Kade leaned closer.

”Can you find where they start?”

Ayame shook her head.

”Not yet.”

”Can you find what keeps them coming?”

”Not yet.”

He looked disappointed.

She continued.

”But I think we’re finally asking the right questions.”

Kade considered that.

Then nodded.

”Good.”

Elias examined the reports.

”We’ll need the other Heroes involved.”

”Yes,” Ayame answered. ”Especially Staff and the Guardians. Some of these patterns concern the structure of the summoning framework itself.”

Kade looked toward the window.

Eight years.

Eight years of fighting one Wave after another.

Eight years of winning battles without ending the war.

He thought of the records they’d discovered as children.

The names.

The replacements.

The generations that had come before them.

Then he looked toward Ayame.

”Let’s find out.”

She nodded.

”We will.”

Elias folded his arms.

”And when the next Wave comes?”

Kade looked at him.

Then smiled.

”We win that one too.”

Ayame sighed.

”That’s not a strategy.”

”No.”

Kade leaned back.

”But it’s a requirement.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Elias nodded.

”Agreed.”

Ayame looked between them.

Her expression softened.

”...Agreed.”

Seventeen Heroes.

Eight years.

No replacements.

And somewhere beyond the known edges of Wysteria’s understanding, an answer still waited.

They intended to find it.

Not because the kings had ordered them.

Not because the priests had called them sacred.

Because they had decided that no more children would be taken if they could possibly prevent it.

And because they were very, very tired of fighting a war that everyone else seemed content to call eternal.

 VII. The Stars Were Wrong

Kade rarely allowed himself to be alone anymore.

Not because he disliked solitude.

He actually enjoyed it.

But the moments when he could sit quietly without an immediate task, an injury requiring attention, or another Hero demanding his assistance had become surprisingly rare.

There was always something to do.

A strategy meeting.

A report.

A visit to the wounded.

An argument with a noble.

A weapons inspection.

A training exercise.

A new lead concerning the Waves.

Or simply someone knocking on his door because they needed help with a problem that apparently required the Holy Gauntlet Hero’s particular talent for saying things nobody else wanted to say.

He didn’t resent all of it.

Some days, he even enjoyed the work.

But every once in a while, usually when the camp had fallen quiet and the other Heroes were asleep, he would find himself slipping outside.

Not to train.

Not to patrol.

Not to inspect the walls.

Just to sit.

And look at the stars.

Tonight was one of those nights.

The monastery rested beneath a clear sky.

The wounded had been settled.

The campfires were burning low.

A few sentries walked along the outer wall, their boots making soft sounds against the stone.

Beyond the monastery, the devastated fields stretched toward dark hills.

The fires had mostly gone out.

A faint smell of smoke lingered in the air.

Kade walked up a narrow stairway leading to a small observation terrace.

It was a quiet place.

An old section of the monastery wall, built high enough to overlook the valley.

Someone had left a wooden bench beneath the parapet.

The bench was slightly crooked.

One leg had been repaired with a different kind of wood.

Kade regarded it.

Then sat down.

It creaked.

He raised an eyebrow.

”...Don’t you start.”

The bench remained intact.

He considered that a victory.

Then he leaned back and looked upward.

The sky was beautiful.

That was one thing Wysteria possessed in extraordinary abundance.

Beautiful skies.

Bright mornings.

Violet sunsets.

Storms that rolled across vast plains beneath towering clouds.

Nights when the stars seemed so close that a person might reach upward and brush their fingers against them.

Kade remembered loving those things when he was younger.

He still did.

Though sometimes he hated himself for noticing.

Because the beauty made Wysteria seem like a place where he might have chosen to live.

And he hadn’t chosen any of it.

The stars glimmered overhead.

Thousands of them.

White.

Blue.

Pale gold.

A faint band of luminous dust stretched across the darkness, curving above the distant mountains.

Kade studied the unfamiliar constellations.

Eight years.

He’d been twelve when he arrived.

Now he was twenty.

He had spent the years between those ages learning how to fight, how to survive, and how to keep his companions from becoming casualties.

He knew the names of kingdoms he’d never heard of as a child.

Yollandia.

Quilstead.

Canderian.

Draqaar.

Stirlingholme.

Veliko.

O’dora.

Places filled with people.

Places with histories, cultures, families, and ordinary lives.

He’d eaten their food.

Walked their roads.

Seen their cities burn.

Helped rebuild their defenses.

Watched soldiers weep over friends who wouldn’t be returning home.

He had become familiar with a great deal of Wysteria.

But there was one thing he had never managed to do.

Forget Mizunokuni.

Kade closed his eyes.

The memory came easily.

A shrine road beneath tall cedars.

Sunlight moving through the leaves.

The sound of a stream.

An old footbridge.

The smell of rice and tea drifting from a nearby house.

Ranmei shouting his name.

He smiled faintly.

”...You little menace.”

The words escaped before he realized he was speaking.

He opened his eyes.

Then laughed quietly.

”Actually, I suppose that was me.”

He could still picture her.

Golden-blonde hair.

Nine beautiful tails.

Fox ears that twitched whenever she became annoyed.

The expression she wore when he called her Auntie Ranmei.

He’d loved doing that.

He had known perfectly well that she hated it.

That had been the point.

Ranmei had found him when he was little.

Before he understood the boundaries of Mizunokuni.

Before he knew what it meant to have a real home.

She had been his first friend there.

The one who had led him toward Kuroha.

The one who had stayed.

The one who had raced him down the roads and argued with him about everything.

Kade looked toward the stars.

”...Wonder if you’re still angry.”

He smiled.

Then the smile faded.

Eight years.

If time passed the same way in Mizunokuni, Ranmei would be twenty-one now.

That was a strange thought.

He had trouble imagining her as an adult.

The last time he’d seen her, she had been thirteen.

Furious.

Terrified.

Her golden hair disheveled.

Her nine tails spread behind her as she fought to keep him from being pulled away.

He remembered the way she’d screamed.

The way she’d held his wrist.

The way her hand had slipped from his when he pushed her out of the circle.

Kade’s smile disappeared.

”...Sorry.”

The word hung in the night air.

Nobody answered.

He lowered his eyes.

”I didn’t want you to get hurt.”

His fingers tightened against the edge of the bench.

The Gauntlets rested over his hands.

They had changed over the years.

Their forms had developed.

The System had allowed him to unlock additional configurations, reinforce their structures, and improve the way they channeled his fighting techniques.

Eight years of battle had left the sacred metal covered in scars and repairs that no ordinary blacksmith could have reproduced.

Kade could destroy a siege monster with those hands.

He could break enchanted armor.

He could fight creatures that could tear through ordinary military formations.

And yet, no matter what he tried, he couldn’t make the Gauntlets open a road home.

He had asked the System.

He had searched the summoning archives.

He had spoken to scholars, mages, priests, and people who claimed to understand the boundaries between worlds.

Most had offered prayers.

Some had offered theories.

A few had admitted that they didn’t know.

And several had become deeply uncomfortable when Kade asked whether the summoning ritual could be reversed.

He had learned a great many things about what the sacred Weapons could do.

Very little about how their bearers could leave.

Kade looked down at his hands.

”...Useless things.”

The Gauntlets did not answer.

He sighed.

Then leaned back against the stone wall.

Above him, the stars continued shining.

He wondered whether Mizunokuni’s sky looked the same tonight.

Probably not.

He had studied the constellations of Wysteria often enough to know they didn’t match the ones he’d been taught as a child.

Perhaps they weren’t even visible from the same kind of world.

Perhaps the distance between them wasn’t something a person could measure.

Kuroha would have known.

The thought made his chest tighten.

Aunt Kuroha.

He remembered her standing beneath the cedar tree.

The closed parasol in one hand.

That small, familiar smile.

Her patient expression when Ranmei complained about his behavior.

The way she’d rested a hand on his head when he asked whether roads remembered people.

He remembered her answer.

Sometimes simply the care people take in returning.

Kade swallowed.

For eight years, he had held onto those words.

He’d repeated them to himself during marches.

During battles.

While lying in hospital beds waiting for injuries to heal.

During nights when other Heroes cried quietly because they missed their families.

Sometimes, when he was particularly exhausted, he’d wondered whether he had remembered the words correctly.

Perhaps Kuroha had said something slightly different.

Perhaps he’d changed the memory over time.

Eight years was a long time.

Especially when so much had happened between then and now.

But he remembered her face.

That, he couldn’t change.

The last expression he’d seen before the light swallowed him.

Terror.

Kade closed his eyes.

”...Did you find anything?”

His voice was barely audible.

”Any trace?”

The wind moved across the terrace.

He listened to it.

Somewhere below, a sentry coughed.

A horse shifted in the stable.

The monastery’s old wooden beams creaked softly as the night cooled.

No answer came.

Kade looked upward again.

He had always believed Kuroha could do anything.

Not literally.

She’d corrected him often enough about the difference between extraordinary power and unlimited power.

But to a little boy growing up in Mizunokuni, she had seemed close enough.

The roads bent for her.

Boundaries parted.

Distances became negotiable.

Things that terrified ordinary people seemed to interest her more than frighten her.

She was Kuroha Sakaime.

His aunt.

The person who had taken him in when he was small.

The person who had always known how to get him home.

And on the day he was summoned, he’d watched her fail.

That was the part that haunted him.

Not because he blamed her.

He didn’t.

Never.

But because the last look on her face had told him something he’d never been forced to understand before.

Even Kuroha could be afraid.

Even Kuroha could lose someone.

And even the strongest person he knew could reach with everything she had—

And still be too late.

Kade rubbed his face.

His fingers caught against the metal of the Gauntlets.

He sighed.

”...I’m sorry.”

The words came out more heavily than he intended.

He didn’t know whether he was apologizing for being taken.

For failing to return.

For the fact that she’d tried to save him.

Or for the simple, terrible possibility that she might still be looking.

Eight years.

Had she been searching for eight years?

Had Ranmei?

Had his other aunts?

He thought of the women who had raised him.

The different households.

The different tempers.

The arguments.

The way everyone seemed to have a particular opinion about how Kade ought to behave.

He had complained about it constantly.

He missed it so much that sometimes the memory hurt worse than his injuries.

He wondered whether they still talked about him.

Whether someone occasionally set an extra bowl at the table before remembering.

Whether Ranmei still walked the shrine road where they had been playing.

Whether Kuroha had returned to that place again and again, searching for the point where the summoning had broken through.

He wondered whether they thought he was alive.

Then came the thought he hated most.

What if they’ve stopped looking?

Kade went still.

He stared toward the mountains.

It wasn’t a fair thought.

He knew that.

He knew Kuroha.

He knew Ranmei.

He knew the people who had given him a home.

But eight years was a long time.

And sometimes, when the fighting had been particularly terrible, he wondered whether the world he’d left behind had continued moving without him.

Whether the places he remembered had changed.

Whether the people he loved had grown older.

Whether they had found some way to live with his absence.

Whether, if he ever returned, he would still recognize the life that had once belonged to him.

He swallowed.

”...I hope you’re okay.”

His voice cracked slightly.

He looked up at the stars.

”All of you.”

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

Then he laughed quietly.

A small, unhappy sound.

”Ranmei’s probably still mad at me.”

He smiled faintly.

”Probably still calling me an idiot.”

A pause.

”...She’s not wrong.”

The wind moved through his hair.

Kade rested his head against the stone.

He could almost imagine hearing her voice.

You promised you’d come back before dinner!

He closed his eyes.

”...Yeah.”

A long silence followed.

Then he whispered:

”I know.”

 The night grew colder.

Kade remained on the terrace.

He didn’t know how long he sat there.

He wasn’t counting.

For once, he didn’t want to.

The monastery behind him remained quiet.

The wounded were sleeping.

The other Heroes were recovering.

The battlefield beyond the walls had finally stopped burning.

Another Wave had been defeated.

Another kingdom had survived.

Another victory had been recorded.

And every member of the current Hero generation was still alive.

Kade looked toward the stars.

Eight years earlier, he’d been twelve.

He had wanted to go home.

Now he was twenty.

He still wanted to go home.

That hadn’t changed.

But something else had.

He wasn’t the only one who’d been taken.

He wasn’t the only one waiting for a road that might never appear.

Sixteen other people had lived through the same eight years.

Ayame.

Elias.

Hammer.

Staff.

Dagger.

Bow.

Katana.

The others.

Children who had become his companions.

His friends.

His family, in a way that had never been planned or chosen.

He knew their habits.

Their fears.

The way they behaved when injured.

Which ones became quiet after battle.

Which ones needed somebody to sit beside them until the shaking stopped.

Which ones hid their exhaustion behind jokes.

Which ones needed reminding to eat.

Which ones would throw themselves into danger for another Hero without hesitating.

He loved those idiots.

Every one of them.

And he knew they loved him too, though several would rather swallow a sword than admit it aloud.

Kade smiled faintly.

”...Stuck with you.”

He looked down at his Gauntlets.

Then toward the distant valley.

The Waves were still coming.

They had won every battle.

But they hadn’t ended the war.

Wysteria’s kingdoms remained standing because armies continued bleeding and Heroes continued fighting.

The sacred Weapons were still bound to their bearers.

The summoning framework still existed.

And if one of them died, another child would be brought here to take that person’s place.

Kade’s expression hardened.

Eight years ago, he hadn’t known enough to understand what had been done to him.

Five years ago, he’d learned.

Now he had enough experience to understand just how difficult ending the system would be.

The Waves were not going to disappear because he hated them.

The kingdoms were not going to surrender their dependence on the Heroes because he complained.

And the System would not release him merely because he asked.

He knew that.

But he also knew something else.

Every time a Hero returned from battle, the replacement summoning remained unnecessary.

Every time they rescued one another from the edge of death, another child remained in their own world.

Another family kept its son or daughter.

Another little girl got to walk home from school.

Another boy got to finish playing with his friend.
