Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

The Morning After the Holiday

On the first Monday after Beach Week, Horizon Atoll remembered that it was a naval base.

The change was not immediate.

Military installations rarely transformed themselves from one condition to another as cleanly as the schedules printed on their noticeboards suggested they should. The holiday ended at midnight, but the evidence of it lingered well into the morning: a folding chair abandoned beneath the shade of a palm tree, a handwritten volleyball bracket still attached to the recreation office’s window, a row of washed barbecue equipment drying behind the mess hall, and several badly sunburned sailors discovering that their uniforms were considerably less comfortable than they remembered.

The southern recreation beach had been cleaned and returned to its normal supervised status. The temporary food stations were gone. The volleyball nets had been taken down and stored. The lane markers remained where the water-safety teams needed them, and the restrictions surrounding the contaminated lagoon were still posted with the same uncompromising clarity as before.

Nobody had moved those signs.

Nobody was permitted to.

A few people had suggested leaving one of the volleyball courts assembled for future off-duty use. Mara Fenwick had approved the idea after confirming that it would not interfere with patrol access or the coastal safety arrangements.

Kade had signed the recommendation with a brief note:

Excellent. Maybe next time someone else can be the target.

Nobody had been entirely certain whether he meant the volleyball or the efforts to coax him out of his quarters.

Aster had interpreted it as an invitation.

Mara had advised the Commander to choose his words more carefully in the future.

He had informed her that careful wording had never protected him from Aster.

That had been the last significant argument of Beach Week.

At least, the last significant argument involving Kade.

Riko and Scarlett had managed to continue disputing the finer points of volleyball technique until Sunday evening.

By Monday morning, however, both battleship girls were back on their assigned schedules.

The workshops had reopened for routine work. Engineering had begun reviewing the inspections postponed during the holiday. The Keelborn training division was preparing its next sequence of supervised exercises, accounting for the limited availability of damaged equipment and the medical restrictions that remained in force.

Aster was still recovering. So was June. Neither had received permission to resume unrestricted operations.

Hana returned to her repair station with the attitude of someone who had enjoyed several days of freedom and now deeply resented being reminded that machinery existed.

Senko resumed her cargo duties.

Yuna reported for an aviation-maintenance conference, her surviving fairy crews considerably better rested than they had been before the holiday.

VESPER’s scheduled training resumed under Alina and Mira, though the women were now comparing notes about which beach activities should become permanent fixtures of the station’s recreation program.

Cassidy had suggested a weekly sandcastle competition.

Morgan had objected to allowing Réka anywhere near the judging criteria.

Réka had declared the objection discriminatory toward civil engineering.

The argument was still unresolved.

Kade had received a written account of it at seven forty-three.

He had considered the report for several seconds before writing:

No fortifications taller than the participants. No artillery. No requisitions for cement.

Then he’d placed it in the completed tray.

That had been the final pleasant thing about his morning.

Commander Kade Bher sat behind his desk in the administration building, looking at a cup of coffee he had not yet touched.

Outside, Horizon Atoll was bright beneath the morning sun.

The sky was clear.

The breeze was mild.

A few clouds drifted beyond the harbor, their shadows moving slowly across the water.

From his window, Kade could see part of the maintenance quay and the upper structures of USS Breakwater. The battleship remained unmistakably damaged, but the worst of the exposed areas had been secured. Temporary weather protection covered several sections awaiting permanent repair, and the electrical teams were gradually restoring systems damaged during the Battle of the Burnt Narrows.

A crane stood beside the ship’s starboard side.

Its boom was moving.

Slowly.

Carefully.

A load of replacement material hung beneath the hook, guided by several men who looked very small beside the enormous vessel.

Breakwater was real.

The crew were real.

The damage was real.

Kade had spent enough time around the ship to find the fact almost ordinary now.

Almost.

He lifted his coffee.

Then stopped.

A faint ache ran through his right forearm.

He looked down.

For a moment, he regarded the arm with mild resentment.

Volleyball.

Of all things.

Several days had passed since he’d played Riko, and the soreness had mostly disappeared, but he still occasionally noticed it when lifting something at an awkward angle.

He considered the irony.

Sixteen years of fighting monsters, armored soldiers, magical constructs, and beings large enough to regard an ordinary human as a rather inconvenient snack.

Then a twenty-minute volleyball match had reminded him that athletic technique and combat experience were not the same thing.

He smiled faintly.

“Twenty-two to twenty.”

He took a sip of coffee.

“Terrible.”

Riko had been delighted.

He’d been delighted for her.

She’d learned something important during the match, and the victory had mattered far more to her than it had to him.

That made it a good result.

Aster, naturally, had spent the remainder of the holiday threatening to arrange a rematch.

Kade had repeatedly informed her that he was considering filing for protection under the station’s regulations against workplace harassment.

Aster had replied that the regulations didn’t cover volleyball.

He’d suggested that they should.

She’d laughed.

He’d laughed too.

For a little while, everything had felt almost normal.

Kade set down his cup.

The memory lingered pleasantly.

Then his eyes moved toward the documents waiting on the desk.

The holiday was over.

The war wasn’t.

There were repair approvals to examine, personnel rotation records to sign, fuel allocations to review, and a long list of questions concerning what Horizon should do with the industrial equipment recovered from the Burnt Narrows.

Hana’s preliminary assessment of the old Respite Bath facility was still incomplete. The destroyed structures had revealed several serious problems with the surrounding foundations and utility systems, and the engineering staff were understandably reluctant to promise that the facility could be restored quickly.

Kade supported that reluctance.

He much preferred an engineer who admitted something would be difficult to one who promised miracles and then discovered the existence of gravity halfway through construction.

The four empty synthetic SIA replacement frames recovered during Senko’s salvage operation remained quarantined for inspection.

There were questions about their compatibility, their original intended users, and the technical systems required to make them useful.

Those questions had not disappeared just because the station had taken a holiday.

Neither had the five fallen Keelborn whose Pendants remained beyond Horizon’s restoration capabilities, however this was due to Camille telling Horizon via radio call that she was transferring due to tension where she is at getting worse amongst former-players.

Neither had Thomas Reed.

Neither had Mateo Alvarez.

Death did not go away when someone stopped looking at the paperwork.

Kade knew that better than most.

He looked toward the clock.

Eight twenty-six.

His morning meeting with Mara was scheduled for nine.

Corwin wanted to discuss the week’s supply requirements.

Dain had requested authorization to inspect an auxiliary electrical installation that had not received proper attention in several years.

Eliza had sent a short message thanking him for Beach Week and asking whether the mess hall could keep one of the holiday’s new meal rotations.

Kade had approved that last request immediately.

The others would have to wait until their scheduled appointments.

He reached for the next document.

Then somebody knocked on his office door.

Three times.

Precise.

Measured.

Not Aster.

Kade knew that immediately.

Aster knocked as though she expected the door to become more cooperative if she shouted at it.

This was different.

He looked up.

“Come in.”

The door opened.

A man in an Admiralty Union officer’s uniform entered carrying a thin folder beneath one arm and a second, thicker collection of papers secured with a dark clip.

He was tall enough that Kade had to look up slightly even when both were standing.

His dark hair was neatly combed, though the faint disorder around his collar suggested he’d dressed in a hurry.

He wore no expression of amusement.

That, more than anything, caught Kade’s attention.

“Commander.”

Kade set down his pen.

“Lieutenant Voss.”

The man stepped inside.

“Do you have a moment?”

Kade glanced toward the folders.

Then toward his visitor’s face.

“Judging by that expression, I doubt you’re here to discuss the volleyball tournament.”

“No, sir.”

“Shame. I was beginning to enjoy those reports.”

The lieutenant didn’t smile.

Kade’s own expression changed.

Slowly.

Almost imperceptibly.

He gestured toward the chair.

“Sit down.”

The man obeyed.

Then placed the folders on the desk.

Kade looked toward the uppermost one.

A crimson marking had been applied across the corner.

PRIORITY INTELLIGENCE — PACIFIC LOGISTICS NETWORK

Below it was another stamp.

MULTIPLE SOURCE CORROBORATION REQUIRED

The Commander stopped smiling entirely.

“Talk to me.”

Lieutenant Aaron Voss was thirty-two years old.

He was a former player.

One of the comparatively few people assigned to Horizon’s command establishment who had arrived in this world from the same original Earth as Kade.

There were other former players scattered throughout the installation, of course. Keelborn girls. SIA personnel. The all-male ship’s company aboard Breakwater. Technical specialists, security personnel, and people whose selected roles had placed them in positions that didn’t fit neatly into the original Admiralty Union’s existing administrative hierarchy.

But the station’s senior everyday staff were mostly natives.

Mara Fenwick.

Dain Okoro.

Irena Holt.

Corwin Hale.

Eliza Ward.

They’d been here before the Crisis.

Their lives didn’t begin when FRONTLINE HEARTS launched.

Aaron understood that.

He had learned it more slowly than Kade, and not without embarrassment.

Before Hour Zero, Aaron had spent his evenings playing the new naval game after work. He’d selected an intelligence-and-signals specialization because he liked the idea of finding patterns in incomplete information.

On the original Earth, his employment had involved records, transport scheduling, and the kind of patient data analysis that seldom attracted much public attention.

It had not prepared him for the possibility that the people whose reports he was reading might actually die if he missed something important.

Almost nothing could have prepared him for that.

During the first week after the Crisis, he had spent a great deal of time trying to determine whether his situation was temporary.

He’d checked the familiar assumptions.

Searched for systems that ought to exist.

Waited for the sort of announcement that would have been inevitable if a commercial game had developed a serious technical problem.

No announcement came.

No interface opened.

No administrator explained the situation.

Then he’d spoken with the native operators at Horizon.

Listened to them describe attacks that had taken place years before FRONTLINE HEARTS existed.

Seen damage records older than the game’s public launch.

And watched a technician break down crying over the death of a friend whose name had never appeared in any player-accessible database.

Eventually, Aaron had stopped asking when the simulation would end.

He’d started asking what the reports actually meant.

That was the beginning of his usefulness.

Kade valued him for two reasons.

First, he was good at his job.

Second, he knew what former players tended to believe when they were frightened, confused, or desperate to find an explanation that would make their situation less terrifying.

Aaron could read native naval reports without dismissing them as artificial scenario text.

He could also recognize the peculiar vocabulary of a player who hadn’t yet accepted that the world was real.

That combination had proved invaluable.

And now it had brought him to the Commander’s office with a face that looked as though he’d aged several years overnight.

Kade studied him.

“You haven’t slept.”

Aaron looked up.

“Not much, sir.”

“How much?”

The lieutenant hesitated.

“Two hours.”

Kade sighed.

“That’s a terrible number.”

“I know.”

“Have you eaten?”

“Yes.”

“Properly?”

Aaron considered that.

Then looked faintly ashamed.

“A sandwich.”

Kade nodded.

“Excellent. A full banquet.”

The lieutenant almost smiled.

Almost.

Kade leaned forward.

“What’s happened?”

Aaron opened the first folder.

“Halcyon Roads.”

The name was unfamiliar only in its urgency.

Kade knew the location.

He’d seen it marked on the Pacific logistics charts.

One of the major distribution hubs supplying the Admiralty Union’s scattered naval stations.

A place whose existence made life easier for bases like Horizon, even when no direct shipment arrived from it.

Fuel and equipment passed through networks.

Not straight lines.

Destroy one important node, and shortages traveled much farther than the immediate damage.

Kade’s eyes narrowed.

“The supply hub?”

“Yes.”

“What about it?”

Aaron turned the first page.

“Yesterday afternoon, local time, Halcyon Roads was attacked.”

Kade sat still.

“Blackwake?”

“Initially.”

The Commander noticed the word.

Initially.

Aaron continued.

“The defenders reported a substantial Blackwake air raid. Their aviation units intercepted it. The base took some damage, but the initial reports indicate that the harbor was still operational.”

Kade nodded slowly.

“Then?”

Aaron looked down.

For a moment, he seemed unwilling to say it.

Then he raised his eyes.

“The station was attacked again. From the west.”

“Another Blackwake force?”

“No.”

Silence settled over the office.

Aaron pushed a photograph across the desk.

It was grainy.

Poorly framed.

Taken through haze at considerable distance.

But the shape in the center was unmistakable.

A long hull.

A towering bridge.

Three triple-gun main turrets.

Two forward.

One aft.

Kade looked at it for a long time.

Then he spoke quietly.

“Iowa.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

The Commander stared at the photograph.

Then toward the next page.

A name had been typed beneath the image.

USS IRONWAKE

Kade didn’t move.

For several seconds, he didn’t speak.

Then he lowered the photograph.

“Explain.”

Aaron drew a breath.

“The Iowa-class battleship Ironwake, operating with an unidentified number of Keelborn escorts and at least two carrier-capable units, attacked Halcyon Roads during the recovery period following the Blackwake air raid.”

Kade looked back at the photograph.

“Confirmed?”

“Identification is strong. We have the Halcyon visual report, an emergency radio transmission, and an independent relay station’s copy of the hull identification.”

“Transponder?”

“Unavailable in the final record.”

“Could be false markings.”

“It’s possible.”

Kade raised his eyes.

Aaron continued.

“But the ship’s silhouette, gun arrangement, visual markings, and reported radio identification are consistent. The attackers identified themselves as Ironwake over an open command channel.”

The Commander considered that.

Then nodded once.

“Keep going.”

Aaron turned the page.

“The rogue force attacked the western defense line. At least one Keelborn suffered a torpedo hit. Heavy-caliber bombardment followed. Carrier aircraft were observed approaching the harbor.”

Kade leaned forward.

“Which Keelborn?”

Aaron checked the report.

“Mogami-class aviation cruiser. Local callsign Mogami Group. A woman named Maki.”

The Commander was quiet.

“Condition?”

“Unknown.”

“Last sighting?”

Aaron swallowed.

“Sinking. Other Keelborn were attempting to keep her above water.”

Kade looked toward the window.

For a moment, he said nothing.

The sun continued shining outside.

A crane moved beside Breakwater.

Somewhere in the hallway, someone laughed at an ordinary conversation.

The sound felt suddenly distant.

Kade turned back.

“Is Halcyon still transmitting?”

Aaron’s expression tightened.

“Not on the channels we can reach.”

“Destroyed?”

“We cannot confirm that.”

“Occupied?”

“Also unconfirmed.”

“Survivors?”

“We have evidence of evacuation attempts, but no reliable count.”

Kade nodded slowly.

He appreciated the honesty.

Unpleasant information was bad enough.

Unpleasant information buried beneath confident guesses was worse.

He reached for the next page.

“Who sent the warning?”

Aaron rested one hand on the folder.

“That,” he said quietly, “is why I’m here.”

The Man at the Other End of the Radio

Aaron reached into the folder and removed a second document.

Unlike the neatly typed operational summaries, this one had been assembled in considerable haste.

Some lines were handwritten.

Others had been copied from a receiver’s recording log, complete with interruptions, missing words, and notations explaining where the signal had become too weak to understand.

Several paragraphs had been marked in red.

At the top was a name.

RAFAEL ORTIZ

Beneath it:

HALCYON ROADS SIGNAL OFFICE — CIVILIAN RADIO OPERATOR, FORMER PLAYER

Kade looked toward Aaron.

“Another one of us.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“Yes.”

“You know him?”

“Not personally.”

“Then how did you establish contact?”

“Through the Pacific emergency-relay network. He’d been trying to reach anyone who would listen.”

Aaron paused.

“Yesterday wasn’t the first time.”

Kade looked up.

“What do you mean?”

The intelligence officer drew a breath.

“Ortiz had been reporting suspicious traffic for nearly eleven days. Strange identification codes. Ships failing to respond to authorized routing requests. Former players using channels that were supposed to be restricted to civilian movement. At first, it looked like ordinary post-Crisis confusion.”

“Which would hardly be unusual.”

“No, sir.”

Kade leaned back.

“Continue.”

“Then we started hearing similar things from other stations. Supply convoys being intercepted by people claiming to represent a new player command. Equipment requisitioned without authorization. Keelborn disappearing from assigned routes. Survivors mentioning ships that insisted they’d been ordered into special combat events.”

Kade’s expression darkened.

“Ordered by whom?”

“That’s one of the problems.”

Aaron turned a page.

“Their explanations keep changing. Sometimes they claim they’re operating under a hidden scenario. Sometimes they say the game has entered an accelerated campaign phase. Sometimes they describe themselves as a player guild exercising authority over captured territory.”

“Do any of them agree on who gave the orders?”

“No.”

“Do they have orders?”

“Nothing we’ve authenticated.”

Kade was quiet.

Then he looked down at Rafael Ortiz’s name.

“What did he hear?”

Aaron hesitated.

“More than we did.”

He slid another paper across the desk.

It contained the earliest complete transcript.

HALCYON ROADS EMERGENCY SIGNAL — PARTIAL RELAY COPY

Transmission origin: Halcyon Roads civilian/military shared communications network.

Originating operator: Rafael Ortiz.

Relay source: Admiralty Union western emergency station.

Authentication: Originating operator’s registered voice and station code provisionally matched; subsequent details independently corroborated.

Status: Last complete direct transmission prior to signal disruption.

Kade read the first lines.

“This is Halcyon Roads. This is Halcyon Roads. Emergency warning to all Admiralty Union stations monitoring the Pacific relay. If you can hear me, record this.”

A burst of interference had obscured the next several seconds.

Then:

“The unidentified surface group is Ironwake. Repeat, the battleship is Ironwake. Male former-player crew. Iowa class. Escorts include Keelborn. At least two carriers. They attacked after our air-defense battle.”

Another gap.

“Do not assume they’re operating under Union orders.”

Kade’s eyes narrowed.

He continued reading.

“They’ve been contacting players through private channels for days. They keep saying the scenario hasn’t ended. They’re calling the last two months an accelerated event. I heard them myself. They believe—”

The transcript broke into static.

A notation explained that the operator had changed frequencies.

The message resumed.

“They believe we’re still inside the game.”

Kade stopped reading.

For several seconds, the office was utterly quiet.

Then he looked toward Aaron.

“They believe what?”

The lieutenant’s expression remained grim.

“That the Crisis is part of FRONTLINE HEARTS.”

Kade stared.

Aaron continued.

“Not that they’re trapped in the game and hoping to get out. They believe the world itself is still a live game environment. That the two months since Hour Zero are an artificial time-compression feature.”

The Commander blinked once.

Slowly.

“Two months.”

“Yes.”

“And they think it’s been what? A few hours outside?”

“Depending on which intercepted statement you believe, anywhere from several hours to a weekend.”

Kade looked toward the document again.

Aaron continued carefully.

“They say the developers accelerated in-game time so players could experience a long campaign without spending months in the real world.”

The Commander slowly lowered the paper.

For a moment, he appeared to be considering something deeply unpleasant.

Then he asked:

“Have any of them actually spoken to someone on the original Earth?”

“No.”

“Have they logged out?”

“No.”

“Seen a functioning player interface?”

“Not that we’ve verified.”

“Received a message from anyone outside this world?”

“No.”

Kade folded his hands on the desk.

“Then what exactly are they basing this on?”

Aaron’s answer was quiet.

“Faith, mostly.”

The Commander looked at him.

The lieutenant continued.

“They’ve built explanations around every contradiction. No logout function? Hardcore-event rules. No menus? Immersion mode. Injuries hurt? Advanced sensory integration. Natives remember years of history? Procedural narrative depth. Dead players don’t return? Character-lock penalties until the event ends.”

Kade said nothing.

Aaron watched him carefully.

“Some of the statements are almost childish when you read them alone.”

The Commander slowly raised his eyes.

“And when you read them beside the casualty reports?”

The lieutenant swallowed.

“They stop being childish.”

Kade looked down at the transcript.

A line had been underlined heavily.

“They’re calling people experience sources.”

His jaw tightened.

He read farther.

“They refer to Keelborn as farmable units. They refer to bases as resource nodes. They think taking a harbor gives them permanent account control over its infrastructure.”

A long break appeared in the transcript.

Then:

“If you receive this, please tell your commanding officers these people are not treating casualties as real.”

Kade remained still.

For a moment, all he could hear was the ceiling fan.

Its bearings made a faint clicking sound every few rotations.

He’d noticed it during his first week at Horizon.

Had intended to submit a maintenance request.

Never had.

Now the sound seemed unusually loud.

He continued reading.

The final paragraphs were shorter.

More hurried.

“They’re firing on the station. The western defenses are being hit. We have wounded on the waterline. One of our girls—Mogami—she’s—”

The sentence ended abruptly.

Kade’s fingers tightened around the page.

Another transmission fragment followed.

“Please tell the others. Do not let them enter your harbors under friendly identification. Do not believe the account-rights nonsense. These people are killing—”

Static.

Then:

“If I lose the transmitter, I’m moving to the backup set. I’ve sent the frequencies and identifiers to the relay station. Please confirm receipt.”

A different voice replied.

“Halcyon Roads, message copied. Relay in progress.”

Rafael answered:

“Thank God.”

Those were the last two words of the complete transmission.

Kade stared at them.

For a while, he didn’t move.

Then he asked:

“Anything after that?”

Aaron nodded.

“Fragments.”

He placed another sheet on the desk.

“A brief carrier warning. A harbor distress call. Several unidentified transmissions. Then a partial station evacuation signal.”

“From Ortiz?”

“Not authenticated.”

“Any indication he got out?”

“No, sir.”

Kade closed his eyes for a moment.

Then opened them.

“Did the relay station receive enough for us to act?”

“Yes.”

“Have the other hubs been warned?”

“Some. Communications is working through the network. We don’t know which stations are receiving reliably.”

“Priority?”

“Highest available.”

Kade nodded.

Then looked toward the name on the page again.

Rafael Ortiz.

A man from the original Earth.

Someone who had logged into a game expecting entertainment.

Someone who had discovered a real communications room, a real naval station, and real people depending upon him.

And who had stayed at his transmitter long enough to warn strangers hundreds of miles away that other former players were behaving like monsters.

Kade looked toward Aaron.

“He knew what they were.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“I think so.”

“He tried warning people before the attack.”

“Yes.”

“And when they came, he stayed on the radio.”

Aaron looked down.

“Yes.”

Kade was quiet.

Then he carefully set the transcript aside.

“Good man.”

The words were barely above a whisper.

Aaron looked toward him.

For a moment, the lieutenant seemed relieved that someone had said it.

Then he nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

Aaron had not heard Rafael Ortiz’s voice in person.

Not exactly.

He had heard it through a battered receiver, several relay stations, recording equipment that had not been serviced properly in years, and an emergency communications network whose original designers probably hadn’t expected it to carry warnings of naval mutiny across half the Pacific.

Even so, something about the voice remained with him.

It hadn’t sounded heroic.

That was what disturbed Aaron most.

Rafael hadn’t delivered a grand declaration of defiance.

He hadn’t threatened the rogue fleet.

He hadn’t promised that help would arrive.

He’d sounded like a tired radio operator trying desperately to make sure his message was copied correctly.

Aaron knew the sound.

He’d made calls like that himself.

During the Crisis’s early weeks, he’d spent nights telling other stations that a convoy had been delayed, a dangerous route had been closed, or someone was searching for personnel whose last known positions had become uncertain.

His responsibility had seemed simple at first.

Relay the information.

Preserve the records.

Don’t lose the messages.

Then he’d begun learning what happened when a message failed.

A transport arrived without knowing the anchorage had been mined.

A patrol moved into a sector where the Blackwake had been sighted hours earlier.

A family waited at the wrong landing point because nobody had corrected a passenger manifest.

Sometimes the errors were small.

Sometimes they were not.

Now Halcyon Roads had sent a warning.

And Aaron had spent the better part of the night trying to determine how much of it was true.

He’d listened to the recording four times.

Once for the identification.

Once for the emergency traffic.

Once for the unusual references to game mechanics.

And once because he couldn’t stop thinking about the voice at the end.

Thank God.

Not a military code.

Not a formal report.

Just relief that somebody had heard him.

Aaron looked toward Kade.

The Commander was studying the remaining pages.

His expression was difficult to read.

He wasn’t shouting.

Wasn’t demanding that Aaron find the impossible.

Wasn’t filling the gaps in the report with guesses.

He was asking careful questions.

And that made the lieutenant more nervous than anger would have.

Kade lifted another sheet.

“This part.”

Aaron leaned forward.

The Commander tapped a paragraph.

“‘Private channels.’ How did Ortiz hear them?”

“We believe some of the rogue fleet’s officers were transmitting on former-player social frequencies. Channels that existed as informal voice networks during the game’s launch period.”

“Still functioning?”

“Some are. They’ve been repurposed through local transmitters and naval radio equipment.”

Kade nodded.

“How did he get access?”

“He had been monitoring nearby traffic after a cargo captain complained about a strange boarding demand. One of the frequencies appeared in the boarding party’s communications notes. Ortiz began listening.”

“Did they know?”

“We don’t think so.”

“And he recorded it?”

“Some of it.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

Aaron opened a supplementary file.

“That’s the material I’ve been trying to confirm.”

The Commander looked toward the first page.

There were fragments of conversation.

Not polished military transmissions.

Not formal operational orders.

Casual voices.

Jokes.

Arguments about supplies.

A male voice discussing whether the destruction of a damaged cruiser counted toward a guild objective.

Another asking when experience points would appear.

A third insisting that the game developers were withholding rewards until the end of the event.

Kade read silently.

Then he stopped at one particular exchange.

“Are you sure that was a player?”

“Who cares? If it shoots, it gives progression.”

“What about the crew?”

“NPC losses don’t matter. They regenerate when the map resets.”

A note beneath the fragment explained that the source was unverified but consistent with the Halcyon operator’s description of rogue terminology.

Kade looked toward Aaron.

“Do we know who said this?”

“No.”

“Was it definitely Ironwake’s group?”

“We can’t establish that from this fragment alone. Ortiz believed it belonged to an associated unit. The frequency and timing support the connection, but they don’t prove it.”

Kade nodded.

“Mark it that way.”

“I have.”

“Good.”

The Commander turned another page.

A photograph showed a damaged supply vessel pulled alongside an unfamiliar pier.

Another showed several cargo containers being moved under armed supervision.

A third depicted a Keelborn girl with damaged rigging standing beside a group of armed personnel.

The image was distant.

Her face was indistinct.

Kade studied it.

“Where?”

“A smaller logistics station west of Halcyon. We don’t have a reliable local name for the photograph’s exact location.”

“Date?”

“Probably within the last ten days.”

“Probably.”

Aaron winced.

“Yes.”

“Who took it?”

“Unknown. It was forwarded through a civilian shipping contact.”

Kade returned the image.

“Then it’s a lead. Not proof.”

“Agreed.”

He studied the lieutenant.

Aaron looked exhausted.

But he’d done the work.

He hadn’t presented every rumor as fact simply because it supported an alarming conclusion.

He’d separated what could be verified from what merely seemed possible.

Kade appreciated that.

A great deal.

Then he asked:

“What’s the worst confirmed action before Halcyon?”

Aaron drew a breath.

“A supply convoy was stopped by armed former players operating with at least one Keelborn escort. The survivors reported forced seizure of cargo.”

“Anyone hurt?”

“Yes.”

“Killed?”

“Unconfirmed.”

“Other incidents?”

“Unauthorized detention at a small island depot. A communications station reporting armed demands for fuel. Several missing Keelborn. At least two cases where local command officers were threatened with attack if they didn’t release supplies.”

Kade’s eyes narrowed.

“And nobody stopped them?”

“Sir, the Pacific is enormous. Some reports took days to reach the nearest command. Others were dismissed as post-Crisis disputes between former players and native administrators.”

The Commander said nothing.

Aaron continued carefully.

“Until Halcyon, there hadn’t been a confirmed major surface attack by an organized former-player fleet.”

“Now there has.”

“Yes.”

Kade leaned back.

For a moment, he stared toward the ceiling.

Then he asked:

“How many people believe this is still a game?”

Aaron hesitated.

“We don’t know.”

“Estimate.”

“Hundreds, perhaps. Possibly more associated with the wider network. Not all of them necessarily involved in the attacks.”

Kade nodded.

“Important distinction.”

“Yes.”

“Believing something foolish isn’t the same as firing on civilians.”

“No, sir.”

“And being a former player doesn’t make someone part of Ironwake’s organization.”

“Absolutely not.”

The Commander looked toward the photograph of the Iowa-class battleship.

Then quietly asked:

“But the people on that ship are firing, aren’t they?”

Aaron swallowed.

“Yes.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Kade reached for the Halcyon transcript again.

He read the final lines.

The voice that had reached across the Pacific.

The plea not to mistake friendly identification for safety.

The warning that people were being treated as resources.

Then he carefully returned the papers to the folder.

“Lieutenant.”

Aaron straightened.

“Sir?”

“How many stations received that warning?”

“At least four confirmed. We’re seeking acknowledgment from the rest.”

“And how many supply hubs are there in the wider Pacific network?”

“Ten or eleven major hubs, depending on whether you count the northern reserve installation.”

Kade nodded.

“Halcyon is one of them.”

“Yes.”

“Which means the attackers know what they’re taking.”

Aaron looked toward him.

The Commander continued.

“This isn’t somebody raiding an isolated warehouse because they’re hungry.”

“No.”

“They attacked a major logistical node.”

“Yes.”

“With an Iowa-class battleship, escorting Keelborn, and carrier air support.”

“Yes.”

“After waiting for a Blackwake attack to exhaust the defenders.”

Aaron hesitated.

“We know the timing. We don’t know whether they coordinated with the Blackwake.”

Kade nodded immediately.

“Correct. Don’t assume they did.”

The lieutenant looked relieved.

“We haven’t.”

“Good.”

The Commander tapped the photograph.

“But they exploited the aftermath.”

“That appears certain.”

Kade was quiet.

Then he stood.

Aaron rose automatically.

The Commander looked toward the door.

For several seconds, he seemed to be considering something.

Then he spoke.

“Get your maps.”

The lieutenant blinked.

“Sir?”

“Your reports. Last confirmed positions. Suspected contacts. Weather. Distances. Fuel requirements. Everything you’ve been using to track them.”

Aaron straightened.

“Yes, sir.”

Kade reached for the Halcyon folder.

Then glanced toward the wall clock.

Nine eleven.

Mara would be expecting him in less than an hour.

Corwin would have supply questions.

Dain would want approval for his inspection.

None of those things had stopped mattering.

But something larger had just entered the room.

The Commander took the folder.

Then moved toward the door.

“Come with me.”

Aaron gathered his papers.

“Where are we going?”

Kade glanced back.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

“Operations.”

He opened the door.

“We’re going to find out where these idiots are going next.”

The Hallway Between Two Kinds of War

The administration building had the peculiar atmosphere of a workplace returning from holiday.

People were alert.

Mostly.

Several looked rested.

Others appeared to be rediscovering the unpleasant fact that paperwork did not become easier simply because nobody had touched it for seven days.

A clerk passed carrying a stack of forms.

Two maintenance officers stood beside a noticeboard discussing revised inspection dates.

A telephone rang behind a partially open office door.

Somebody farther down the corridor was asking whether the mess hall still had any of the oranges delivered by the previous week’s supply aircraft.

Ordinary conversations.

Ordinary concerns.

The normal sounds of a base trying to keep itself functioning.

Kade walked through them without slowing.

Aaron followed half a pace behind, carrying the intelligence folders.

Several personnel straightened as they passed.

“Commander.”

Kade nodded.

“Morning.”

“Sir.”

“Morning.”

At the end of the corridor, the Commander turned toward the stairwell leading to the operational planning wing.

Aaron watched him carefully.

Kade wasn’t moving quickly enough to attract attention.

He wasn’t storming through the building.

But there was a purpose to his steps that hadn’t been there when the lieutenant entered his office.

His posture had changed.

The relaxed, slightly sarcastic young man who’d spent the holiday being bullied into playing volleyball was gone.

In his place was someone very focused.

Aaron had noticed that change before.

During the early mine incident.

When the first reports of Blackwake activity near Horizon arrived.

During planning for the Burnt Narrows.

And especially when Breakwater’s distress traffic reached the command station.

Kade became quiet when things were serious.

Not distant.

Not emotionless.

Quiet.

As though every unnecessary thought had been moved out of the way.

The lieutenant wasn’t certain whether he found that reassuring.

They reached the stairwell.

Kade pushed open the door.

Aaron followed.

For several seconds, the only sound was their footsteps.

Then the intelligence officer spoke.

“Commander.”

Kade glanced back.

“Yes?”

“There’s something else you should know about the Halcyon transmission.”

The younger man stopped.

Aaron almost walked into him.

Kade turned.

“What?”

The lieutenant hesitated.

“Ortiz knew one of the rogue fleet’s radio operators.”

The Commander remained still.

“Personally?”

“From before the Crisis. They’d participated in the game’s launch preparations. Different units, same social network.”

Kade considered that.

“Did he speak to him?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Several days before the attack.”

Kade’s eyes narrowed.

Aaron continued.

“He tried explaining that people were dying. That the natives weren’t acting out scripted conversations. That damaged equipment didn’t reset. That former players who died were staying dead.”

“Response?”

The lieutenant looked down.

Then answered quietly.

“He was told he was taking the event too seriously.”

Kade said nothing.

Aaron continued.

“The other operator said everyone knew the developers had increased the immersion level. Said the whole point was to make the campaign feel real.”

For a moment, the stairwell was silent.

Then Kade asked:

“Did Ortiz tell him about the bodies?”

“Yes.”

“The funerals?”

“Yes.”

“The people with families?”

“Yes.”

The Commander looked toward the wall.

A long silence followed.

Then he exhaled.

Slowly.

“Did it matter?”

Aaron swallowed.

“No, sir.”

Kade nodded once.

Then turned toward the stairs.

“Come on.”

They continued upward.

Aaron watched the Commander’s back.

For a moment, he wondered whether he should say anything else.

The lieutenant had read the entire exchange.

There had been more.

The rogue operator had laughed at Rafael.

Called him gullible.

Suggested that the grieving native families were part of an elaborate emotional simulation.

Then asked whether Halcyon Roads had any high-tier carrier units assigned.

As though the question naturally followed a discussion of dead people.

Aaron had listened to the recording twice.

On the second pass, he’d become physically ill.

He hadn’t included that detail in the first report.

There had seemed little point.

Now he followed Kade toward Operations and wondered what sort of man could hear the same words without becoming angry.

He would find out soon enough.

An Ocean Is Not a Chessboard

Horizon Atoll’s Operations Room occupied the upper floor of a reinforced building near the administration wing.

The room had originally been designed to coordinate local naval patrols and routine harbor activity. Over the years, it had gradually acquired additional responsibilities as the station’s funding diminished and neighboring installations began relying on its communications systems.

By the time Kade arrived, the room had become something of an improvised headquarters.

A long plotting table occupied its center.

Several wall charts covered the surrounding surfaces.

A communications station stood near the entrance, staffed by two operators who maintained contact with Harbor Control, the airfield, and the surrounding patrol network.

A larger chart of the central and western Pacific had been mounted on a reinforced frame.

Its surface was marked with shipping lanes, known hazards, patrol sectors, fuel stations, and the locations of installations whose continued operation mattered far more than their names suggested.

Colored markers indicated recent Blackwake sightings.

A separate set identified supply routes that remained open.

Several areas had no recent information at all.

Those blank regions troubled Kade more than the crowded ones.

The Pacific was not empty.

It was simply difficult to observe.

Ships could travel enormous distances without passing within sight of a friendly vessel.

A radio failure could isolate a station for days.

Bad weather could conceal an entire convoy.

A damaged harbor might stop reporting not because its inhabitants had been killed, but because a storm had destroyed the antenna or a generator had finally surrendered after too many years of poor maintenance.

The absence of information was not proof of disaster.

Nor was it proof of safety.

Kade entered the room.

“Morning.”

The duty personnel turned.

“Commander!”

“Carry on.”

The operators returned to their work.

Kade approached the plotting table.

Aaron followed.

A young officer was standing beside the chart, reviewing the previous night’s communications summary.

Lieutenant Peter Sloane was twenty-three, another former player serving on Horizon’s operations staff. His selected role had placed him in the station’s naval planning establishment, where he’d spent the past month discovering that the real Pacific was considerably less cooperative than the game interface had implied.

This story has been stolen from NovelPhoenix. If you read it on Amazon, please report it

He looked up.

“Commander.”

Kade nodded.

“Sloane.”

The officer noticed Aaron’s folders.

His expression changed.

“Problem?”

“Yes.”

“How serious?”

“Bring me the Pacific traffic overlay. Last fourteen days. All confirmed friendly and unidentified surface movements.”

Peter straightened.

“Understood.”

“And get the current weather chart.”

“Yes, sir.”

Kade turned toward Aaron.

“Set your files down.”

The lieutenant obeyed.

Within minutes, the plotting table had been cleared.

Routine harbor paperwork moved to one side.

The intelligence folders were opened.

A fresh sheet of transparent plotting material was secured across the Pacific chart.

A ruler appeared.

Then dividers.

Then a grease pencil.

Kade looked toward the map.

He knew the sea was vast.

Every navigator knew that.

But knowing something intellectually and seeing the distances spread before him were different experiences.

Horizon Atoll occupied one part of the chart.

Halcyon Roads lay far away, connected through a complicated network of shipping lanes and supply routes.

Between them were islands, reefs, open water, and regions where the Admiralty Union’s control depended more on the willingness of scattered patrol crews to keep working than on any comprehensive military presence.

Farther along the transport network lay the Burnt Narrows.

A broken chain of islands and reefs.

A former Blackwake logistical site.

A place where Kade had recently sent people into combat because Horizon desperately needed the supplies hidden there.

A place where VESPER had rescued Mara Venn.

Where Belle had died.

Where Breakwater had taken terrible damage protecting the withdrawal.

Where Thomas Reed and Mateo Alvarez had lost their lives.

Kade’s eyes settled on the name.

Then he looked away.

Not yet.

First, the facts.

“Halcyon.”

Aaron placed a marker on the chart.

“Here.”

“Last confirmed Ironwake position?”

“Western approach. At the time of the attack.”

He placed a second marker.

“Last direct observation?”

“During the bombardment. The final reports don’t establish when the fleet withdrew.”

Kade nodded.

“Other recent sightings?”

Aaron reached for another page.

“Possible identification here. Another here. A confirmed former-player boarding incident in this sector, although we can’t prove it involved the same group.”

He placed three smaller markers.

Different colors.

Different levels of confidence.

Kade studied them.

“Why those colors?”

“Red for confirmed hostile action with direct evidence. Amber for probable association. Gray for unresolved reports.”

“Good.”

The Commander looked toward the chart again.

“And the earlier rumors?”

Aaron opened a file.

“Two cargo seizures here and here. A missing Keelborn escort near this smaller depot. An unusual concentration of former-player radio traffic along this route.”

He indicated a line connecting several minor islands.

“Several stations reported hearing the name Ironwake, but most never saw the ship.”

Kade considered that.

Then asked:

“Are we looking at one fleet or several?”

Aaron hesitated.

“Unknown.”

“Best assessment?”

“The Iowa-class battleship appears to be the center of a larger organization. It may divide into smaller groups for supply raids, then concentrate when attacking a major installation.”

“Which would explain why some reports mention only destroyers.”

“Yes.”

“And why others mention a capital ship.”

“Exactly.”

Kade leaned over the map.

“How many Keelborn?”

“Halcyon reported several destroyer- and cruiser-class units, plus two carrier-capable groups. Earlier sightings suggest more, but we can’t confidently count them.”

“Combat experience?”

“Substantial, judging by the Halcyon attack.”

Kade raised his eyes.

Aaron continued.

“They approached under concealment while the defenders were occupied. The torpedo strike was well timed. The battleship’s bombardment followed closely enough that the defending formation couldn’t recover its balance.”

“Anyone can get lucky.”

“Yes.”

“Did they?”

Aaron shook his head.

“I don’t think so.”

Kade nodded slowly.

Neither did he.

Luck could explain one well-placed torpedo.

Perhaps even a second.

But a coordinated attack involving submarines or torpedo-equipped escorts, a full-sized battleship, and carrier Keelborn required more than enthusiasm.

Somebody had planned it.

Somebody had examined the harbor.

Somebody had known the defenders were tired.

And somebody had been willing to kill them for an advantage.

Kade straightened.

“Any indication Ironwake’s captain personally planned the attack?”

“No verified evidence.”

“Command voice?”

“We have the transmission.”

“Name?”

“Not yet confirmed.”

“Find it.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

Kade returned to the chart.

“Now show me their routes.”

A map was a wonderfully dishonest thing.

Kade had known that long before Horizon.

It made mountains look like little brown shapes.

It made rivers appear as thin blue lines.

It turned cities into names and borders into symbols.

It could make a march through a frozen valley look like an afternoon’s inconvenience, or a battle involving thousands of terrified people look like two arrows meeting beside a hill.

Naval charts possessed the same problem.

A ruler moved easily across paper.

Ships did not.

They required fuel.

Food.

Maintenance.

Navigable water.

Reasonable weather.

Crews capable of standing watch.

Repair facilities when something broke.

And, unless the people aboard possessed an extraordinary appetite for dying, some consideration of what would happen if they met a hostile force before reaching their destination.

Kade leaned over the Pacific chart.

Aaron stood beside him with the traffic records.

Peter Sloane checked the distance scale.

The Commander placed a pair of dividers between Halcyon Roads and the first suspected intermediate staging point.

“Straight-line distance?”

Peter read the measurement.

Then gave the figure.

Kade nodded.

“Actual route?”

“Longer. There are reefs along the direct approach, and the larger vessels would need to use the established deep-water passage.”

The Commander glanced toward the weather chart.

“Prevailing conditions?”

“Mostly favorable over the next several days, though we have a developing disturbance farther north.”

“Could they cut through?”

Aaron considered that.

“An Iowa-class could make an extremely fast passage if fuel and escort coordination weren’t limiting factors.”

Kade looked toward him.

“But they are.”

“Probably.”

“Explain.”

Aaron pointed toward the escort markers.

“Keelborn units have their own propulsion arrangements and endurance limitations. Some can make high-speed passages, but sustained high-speed travel is expensive in fuel and hard on machinery. The carriers also have to maintain aircraft and recover their crews.”

“Supply ships?”

“We don’t know how many are accompanying the fleet.”

“Assume they have at least one support element.”

Peter frowned.

“Why?”

Kade looked toward him.

“Because they’re raiding supply bases. They need somewhere to put the supplies.”

The younger officer considered that.

Then nodded.

“Right.”

Aaron pointed toward one of the suspected routes.

“They may be using captured merchant vessels.”

Kade nodded.

“Mark that as a possibility, not a fact.”

“Yes, sir.”

The Commander leaned farther over the table.

“What about ammunition?”

Peter glanced toward the records.

“Ironwake’s main battery has an enormous demand. If they’re firing heavy bombardments frequently, they’ll need a secure ammunition supply.”

“Exactly.”

Kade tapped the Halcyon marker.

“Could Halcyon provide it?”

Aaron’s expression darkened.

“If they captured the storage facilities intact, yes. Some of it, at least. Compatibility would still matter.”

“What about aviation fuel?”

“Halcyon’s stores would be a major prize.”

“Food?”

“Extensive.”

“Repair materials?”

“Also extensive.”

Kade nodded.

“Then Halcyon wasn’t merely valuable for its position.”

“No.”

“It was a replenishment opportunity.”

Aaron looked toward the island.

“Yes.”

The Commander was quiet.

For a moment, he considered the possibilities.

The rogue fleet could remain at Halcyon to strip it.

It could turn north toward another supply route.

It could travel west, seeking a more heavily defended prize.

It could scatter its escorts across several smaller islands.

Or it could move toward a target that offered something more valuable than ordinary fuel and ammunition.

Kade looked toward the cluster of markers indicating the Burnt Narrows.

He didn’t touch them.

Not yet.

Instead, he asked:

“What’s the pattern?”

Aaron raised an eyebrow.

“Sir?”

“The targets. Show me what they have in common.”

The intelligence officer considered the chart.

Then began moving markers.

A cargo depot.

A fuel station.

A damaged island harbor.

A communications point.

Halcyon Roads.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Kade studied the arrangement.

He wasn’t looking for a neat line.

Real movement rarely provided one.

He was looking for priorities.

The places the rogues had chosen.

The things they appeared willing to fight for.

The targets they’d ignored.

The difference between what was nearby and what was valuable.

Aaron pointed toward the cargo depot.

“Fuel and machinery.”

Then another marker.

“Food stores, electrical equipment, and a small repair yard.”

A third.

“Unknown inventory. Reportedly a Keelborn maintenance facility.”

Kade’s eyes narrowed.

“Reportedly?”

“Source is a damaged commercial transmitter.”

“Keep going.”

Aaron indicated Halcyon.

“Fuel, ammunition, aviation servicing, cargo distribution, repair infrastructure.”

Peter looked toward the chart.

For a moment, he seemed to be thinking.

Then he spoke.

“They’re not simply taking whatever’s nearest.”

Kade glanced toward him.

“Go on.”

The younger officer pointed toward an unused island anchorage.

“This would have been easier.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes.”

“And this harbor has a shorter approach.”

“True.”

Peter looked toward Halcyon.

“But they chose the supply hub.”

Kade smiled faintly.

“Good.”

The officer looked up.

“Sir?”

“That’s the right question.”

He returned to the map.

“Why take the harder target?”

Aaron answered quietly.

“Because the reward is larger.”

The Commander nodded.

“And because they think they’re playing a game.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Kade continued.

“Which means they may be thinking about more than supply efficiency. They may be choosing targets according to what they believe gives them better rewards.”

Aaron’s expression changed.

“Yes.”

“Facilities with rare equipment. High-value Keelborn. Places with salvage that looks like premium loot.”

The lieutenant looked toward the Burnt Narrows.

Kade noticed.

For several seconds, the two men remained quiet.

Then the Commander asked:

“What?”

Aaron hesitated.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t reach that conclusion.”

Kade followed his gaze.

The broken islands lay on the chart like scattered fragments of bone.

He looked toward the name.

BURNT NARROWS

Then he reached for the pencil.

The Burnt Narrows had been important to Horizon long before anyone at the station could afford to call the operation a success.

A chain of reefs and battered islands beyond the most frequently patrolled approaches, it had once held substantial industrial and logistical facilities.

Then the Blackwake took it.

The native population suffered.

The surviving infrastructure deteriorated.

And eventually the place became one of those dangerous blanks on the map: a location everyone knew existed but nobody had sufficient resources to investigate properly.

Kade had ordered the reconnaissance and recovery operation because Horizon needed parts.

Not because the island offered glory.

Not because he believed the facility held some miraculous resource that would solve every shortage.

Because Breakwater required repairs and the station’s stockpiles were inadequate.

Because the harbor needed steel, copper, electrical equipment, mechanical components, and tools.

Because the old industrial installation might contain things that couldn’t easily be manufactured on Horizon.

The operation had revealed more than supplies.

It had revealed survivors.

Blackwake contamination.

The terrible fate of Belle, a former-player Sherman Sensha who had been corrupted into serving the enemy.

It had brought VESPER into a fight far beyond what anyone had hoped the mission would require.

It had drawn Breakwater and her escorting Keelborn into a major naval engagement.

And it had cost the lives of Thomas Reed and Mateo Alvarez.

Kade remembered the casualty reports.

The damaged battleship.

The men who hadn’t returned.

The quiet faces in the mess hall afterward.

He remembered Lucía arriving on a supply aircraft, hoping to see a brother who was already dead.

He remembered the girl asking to learn the work Mateo had loved.

He remembered Mercer allowing her that possibility without pretending she could replace him.

There had been real suffering at the Burnt Narrows.

But the operation had also given Horizon access to materials it desperately needed.

The follow-up salvage expedition led by Senko had recovered useful equipment under escort.

The damaged facilities remained hazardous, and nobody had declared the entire region permanently secure.

But Horizon had learned enough to identify promising salvage areas.

It had records.

Partial inventories.

Routes.

A limited claim established through its military operations.

And, most importantly, a reason to believe that further carefully controlled recovery might help repair Breakwater and restore some of the station’s lost capabilities.

Kade looked at the chart.

A remote industrial site.

Partially surveyed.

Known to contain valuable equipment.

Associated with a recent battle against the Blackwake.

And now appearing in shipping rumors as a place where unusual salvage had been recovered.

His stomach tightened.

Aaron opened another file.

“We received three separate references to the Burnt Narrows over the last five days.”

Kade looked up.

“From whom?”

“One merchant captain. One former-player traffic channel. One anonymous relay.”

“What did they say?”

“The merchant captain mentioned a damaged industrial island where a battleship had fought a Blackwake carrier force. The player channel called it a recently cleared high-value zone.”

Kade stared.

Aaron continued.

“The anonymous relay referred to salvageable naval equipment and abandoned infrastructure.”

The Commander lowered his eyes.

Then he looked toward the chart again.

“Any indication Ironwake’s people heard those rumors?”

Aaron hesitated.

“Not directly.”

“But they were circulating on former-player frequencies.”

“Yes.”

“And the rogues use those frequencies.”

“Yes.”

Kade nodded slowly.

“Continue.”

Aaron pulled out another page.

“One of the intercepted messages mentioned a ‘freshly cleared industrial instance’ somewhere beyond the main supply lanes.”

Peter frowned.

“Instance?”

Kade answered without looking up.

“A game area.”

The younger officer blinked.

The Commander continued.

“A repeatable mission location. Something players would visit for rewards.”

Peter looked toward the chart.

Then toward Aaron.

“But the Burnt Narrows isn’t repeatable.”

“No,” Kade said.

His voice was very quiet.

“It isn’t.”

The three stood around the table.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Kade drew a line between Halcyon Roads and the Burnt Narrows.

Not a straight course.

A possible route.

He marked the deep-water passages.

The likely refueling opportunities.

The island groups where a large fleet might pause.

Then he looked toward the weather chart.

“Now calculate the travel time.”

Peter straightened.

“Yes, sir.”

Aaron reached for the navigation tables.

Kade stood still.

Watching.

For several minutes, the room filled with the quiet sounds of work.

Paper sliding across the chart.

Pencils moving.

Measurements being checked.

A navigator consulting the latest weather summary.

Aaron comparing the estimated route against the last confirmed position.

Nobody rushed the calculation.

The difference between four days and six days mattered.

The difference between an Iowa-class battleship’s theoretical maximum speed and an actual mixed fleet’s sustainable speed mattered.

The difference between a direct passage and a route suitable for escorts, support vessels, and carrier operations mattered.

And the possibility that the rogue fleet might remain at Halcyon to load captured stores mattered most of all.

Kade waited.

At last, Peter looked up.

“Commander.”

“Yes?”

“If they departed after the attack, used a realistic cruising speed for the slower units, and followed the likely deep-water route, they could reach the Burnt Narrows within roughly six days.”

Kade was quiet.

Peter continued.

“Faster if the fleet has better endurance than we assume. Slower if they stop to resupply or encounter bad weather.”

Aaron nodded.

“The weather currently favors the route. There’s a disturbance farther north, but nothing on the forecast that would obviously force them away from these passages.”

Kade looked toward the map.

Six days.

If the weather held.

He glanced toward Aaron.

“Confidence?”

The lieutenant considered that.

“Moderate at best. We have a plausible destination, not a confirmed order.”

Kade nodded.

“Good.”

He took the pencil.

Then circled the Burnt Narrows.

Once.

Carefully.

The dark line remained on the chart.

A small mark.

An enormous problem.

Kade looked toward the officers.

“Six days.”

Neither answered.

He set down the pencil.

“That’s our working estimate.”

Aaron nodded.

Peter straightened.

“Yes, sir.”

The Commander looked at the circled island again.

Then spoke quietly.

“If they’re going there, they’re not going to find a resettable dungeon.”

Aaron’s expression darkened.

“No.”

“They’ll find the place where our people bled for salvage.”

The intelligence officer swallowed.

Kade looked toward the photograph of Ironwake.

His voice became very soft.

“And if they think they can take it because someone cleared the level for them...”

He didn’t finish.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Aaron’s communications handset began ringing.

The Folder with No Return Address

The sound cut sharply through the quiet planning room.

Aaron glanced toward the handset.

Then toward Kade.

The Commander nodded.

“Answer it.”

The lieutenant crossed to the communications desk and lifted the receiver.

“Intelligence. Lieutenant Voss.”

He listened.

His expression changed.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“When?”

He glanced toward the wall clock.

Then toward the Commander.

“Understood. Send it up.”

Aaron lowered the handset.

Kade watched him.

“What?”

“A supplementary intelligence packet just reached the station.”

“From?”

“Our communications section. It came through the western relay chain.”

“Same source as Halcyon?”

“Partly.”

Kade narrowed his eyes.

“Partly?”

Aaron nodded.

“There’s an additional witness account. Physical copies. They held it for authentication before passing it to us.”

The Commander looked toward the intelligence folders spread across the table.

“Why wasn’t it included earlier?”

“Because it wasn’t here earlier.”

Kade considered that.

Then nodded.

“Fair enough.”

Aaron looked toward the entrance.

The duty operator had already acknowledged the approaching messenger.

For a moment, the room was quiet again.

Then Peter Sloane spoke.

“Commander?”

Kade glanced over.

“Yes?”

“Should we warn the Burnt Narrows salvage team?”

The question was reasonable.

Too reasonable to answer without checking something first.

Kade looked toward the chart.

“Current team strength?”

Peter consulted the operations schedule.

“Limited personnel at the last temporary survey position. No large salvage movement underway today. The next major cargo expedition hasn’t been authorized.”

Kade nodded slowly.

“Can we reach the local patrol?”

“Yes.”

“Then put them on an elevated watch condition. No unnecessary shore work. No independent approach to unidentified vessels. Tell them we’re reviewing new intelligence and will issue further instructions.”

Peter straightened.

“Yes, sir.”

Kade raised one finger.

“Do not tell them an enemy fleet is definitely six days away.”

The younger officer hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Because we haven’t confirmed the destination.”

“Exactly.”

Kade looked toward the chart.

“Tell them what we know. Not what we’re afraid of.”

Peter nodded.

He moved toward the communications station.

Aaron watched him go.

Then turned back.

“Sir, we could order a complete withdrawal.”

“We could.”

“Should we?”

Kade considered the question.

A withdrawal might save the limited personnel currently operating near the Burnt Narrows.

It would also surrender local observation of the site, perhaps at precisely the moment when Horizon needed information most.

The available vessels had to be counted.

Their fuel.

Their endurance.

The time required to return.

Whether they could withdraw unseen.

Whether an approaching hostile force could reach them before they cleared the area.

He couldn’t answer the question responsibly without knowing those things.

“Prepare the withdrawal options,” he said. “We’ll decide once we know what forces are actually exposed.”

Aaron nodded.

“Yes, sir.”

“And no heroic last stands over piles of damaged steel.”

The lieutenant glanced toward him.

Kade’s expression was serious.

“If the situation becomes untenable, we save the people. We can recover equipment later.”

Aaron nodded again.

“Understood.”

The Commander looked toward the chart.

For a moment, he remembered Breakwater returning from the Burnt Narrows, damaged and exhausted.

He remembered how close the operation had come to losing far more than two men.

He would not repeat that mistake for the sake of preserving a salvage claim.

Not if he could help it.

The messenger arrived six minutes later.

She was a communications clerk from the station’s native staff, wearing a practical uniform with a small radio-services insignia on her sleeve.

A thin sheen of perspiration glistened across her forehead.

She’d clearly come directly from the relay office.

She stopped beside the door.

“Lieutenant Voss?”

Aaron turned.

“Yes?”

“Priority packet, sir.”

She held out a sealed folder.

Unlike the earlier intelligence files, this one was bound with red security tape and carried several relay markings.

Aaron accepted it.

“Authentication?”

“Attached inside. The western relay station confirmed the originating signatures, and our signals section checked the voice references against the earlier Halcyon recording.”

“Any alterations?”

“Only transmission recovery. Missing portions are marked.”

Aaron nodded.

“Thank you.”

The clerk hesitated.

For a moment, she looked toward Kade.

Then she spoke quietly.

“Sir?”

The Commander turned.

“Yes?”

“Communications asked me to pass on something else.”

“Go ahead.”

“The western relay operator said the sender was very insistent that this not be treated as ordinary piracy.”

Kade watched her.

The clerk swallowed.

“She said the people taking the supplies were also taking...”

Her voice faltered.

Aaron lowered his eyes.

Kade’s expression softened slightly.

“Take your time.”

The woman drew a breath.

“Keelborn Pendants, sir.”

The room became quiet.

Peter stopped beside the communications station.

Aaron slowly looked toward the folder in his hands.

Kade didn’t move.

For several seconds, the clerk appeared to be waiting for a question.

None came.

Then the Commander spoke.

“Thank you.”

She straightened.

“Sir.”

“You did the right thing bringing it directly.”

The clerk nodded.

Her expression remained troubled.

“Will there be anything else?”

“Not now. Return to Communications, please.”

“Yes, Commander.”

She saluted and left.

The door closed.

For a moment, the room seemed unusually still.

Aaron stood holding the sealed folder.

Kade looked at it.

Then extended his hand.

“Lieutenant.”

Aaron stepped forward.

“Yes, sir?”

“Give it to me.”

The intelligence officer hesitated only long enough to confirm the packet’s recipient.

Then he placed it in the Commander’s hand.

Kade studied the exterior.

The envelope had been marked with an urgent warning:

ALLEGED SYSTEMATIC CAPTURE OF KEELBORN PERSONNEL AND PENDANTS

Below it:

POTENTIAL COERCIVE RESTORATION INTENT

Another line had been added by a different hand.

FORMER-PLAYER COMMAND ELEMENT IMPLICATED

Kade read the words.

Then he carefully removed the security tape.

He opened the folder.

And began reading.

The first document was an eyewitness statement.

Its author was a civilian cargo officer who had escaped an unauthorized boarding of a minor island depot several days before the Halcyon attack.

The statement was not especially elegant.

The writer had been frightened.

He’d repeated himself.

Several descriptions were uncertain.

He had admitted not knowing the names of the armed personnel involved.

But there were details.

Specific details.

A loading crane painted with the wrong harbor’s registration number.

A damaged Keelborn rigging component secured to a cargo cradle.

An improvised storage area guarded by men who wore former-player naval uniforms.

Several small sealed cases being transferred from one vessel to another under close supervision.

And a conversation overheard between two of the armed men.

One had asked whether the cases contained ammunition.

The other had laughed.

Then answered:

“No. Better. Shipgirls.”

Kade’s eyes stopped moving.

For several seconds, he stared at the line.

Then he continued.

The cargo officer had asked what that meant.

The armed man had reportedly shown him one of the cases.

Inside was a small object that resembled a naval keepsake.

A Pendant.

The officer had recognized the type.

He’d worked with native Keelborn crews before.

He knew what the devices represented.

The witness statement continued:

The armed man said they had collected several from destroyed or captured Keelborn units. He said they were valuable because the shipgirls could eventually be brought back. He described them as rewards belonging to his group.

Kade turned the page.

A photograph had been attached.

The image was poor.

Taken at an angle.

Partially obscured by the edge of a loading vehicle.

But the contents of the open case were visible.

Three small objects resting in separate padded compartments.

Each bore the distinctive shape of a Keelborn Ship Pendant.

Kade studied the photograph carefully.

He’d seen Pendants before.

He knew what they looked like.

He knew what had been recovered from the Burnt Narrows.

He knew how much work would be required to restore a damaged Keelborn from one.

And he knew that, even when restoration was possible, a Pendant wasn’t an ordinary piece of equipment.

It was bound up with a person’s identity.

History.

Life.

Everything that made that individual more than the machinery she carried.

His expression remained unreadable.

He turned the page.

The next statement came from a former-player maintenance specialist who had fled a rogue-controlled repair depot.

This account was more technical.

Its author had recognized parts of the infrastructure.

Industrial restoration cradles.

Damaged medical and mechanical support systems.

Equipment intended to assist with the difficult process of reconstructing Keelborn bodies and rigging.

The witness did not claim those systems were working.

In fact, the report repeatedly stated that the depot’s personnel appeared to be missing critical components.

But the intention was unmistakable.

The rogue organization was collecting Ship Pendants.

Recording them.

Cataloguing them.

Trying to determine which could be restored.

And looking for facilities capable of performing the work.

Kade’s fingers tightened slightly around the paper.

Aaron watched him.

The Commander turned another page.

A list appeared.

Not a casualty list.

Not a memorial.

Not a register prepared to preserve the identities of the dead until their families could be notified.

An inventory.

The columns were labeled:

UNIT TYPE

PENDANT CONDITION

RECOVERY LOCATION

ACCOUNT CLAIMANT

RESTORATION PRIORITY

Kade read the headings.

Then looked toward the attached explanation.

The inventory had been photographed before the maintenance specialist escaped.

The image was incomplete.

Several rows were illegible.

But enough remained to understand what the men compiling it believed they were doing.

They were listing Keelborn as possessions.

Not patients.

Not prisoners of war.

Not even defeated military personnel.

Possessions.

The phrase account claimant appeared repeatedly.

Sometimes beside a former-player identification code.

Sometimes beside an informal guild designation.

Once beside a name that appeared to match a member of Ironwake’s wider organization.

Aaron spoke quietly.

“Sir.”

Kade didn’t look up.

The lieutenant fell silent.

Another page.

Another statement.

This one described a dispute between two rogue officers over ownership of a recovered Pendant.

The argument had not concerned the girl’s identity.

Or whether she had surviving friends.

Or whether restoration was feasible.

It had concerned which former player’s supposed account had earned the reward.

Kade read the last line.

One officer said the Pendant should belong to whoever had caused the most damage before the target was destroyed.

The Commander placed the page on the table.

Then stood perfectly still.

 Aaron had been expecting anger.

He’d seen the contents of the folder.

He’d spent part of the previous night studying the implications.

He knew how Kade felt about the native personnel at Horizon.

He knew the Commander refused to treat Keelborn as disposable equipment.

He’d watched him argue over medical resources, rest periods, equipment safety, and the preservation of Pendants recovered from combat zones.

But the reaction that followed was not what Aaron expected.

Kade didn’t shout.

Didn’t slam the folder shut.

Didn’t curse.

He simply read.

Slowly.

Every page.

Every notation.

Every statement marked as uncertain.

Every photograph.

Aaron watched the young Commander work through the evidence with the concentration of a man determined not to miss anything simply because it made him furious.

That unsettled the lieutenant more than an outburst would have.

He looked toward Peter Sloane.

The younger officer stood near the chart, watching in silence.

Neither spoke.

Kade reached the final page.

An intercepted message.

The source was believed to be a rogue fleet logistics channel.

It was partially authenticated through voice comparison and communications metadata.

The transcript was short.

“Don’t waste the good Pendants. Those are account assets.”

A second voice responded.

“What if the girls refuse when we bring them back?”

The answer came immediately.

“They won’t have a choice. They’re bound to whoever claims them.”

A third voice laughed.

“Then we make them serve. That’s what they’re for.”

Kade stopped.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the distant hum of ventilation equipment.

Then he read the next line.

“If the reconstruction takes a while, fine. Put them in storage. They’re ours now.”

Silence.

Kade looked at the paper.

He did not move.

Aaron could see the Commander’s face in profile.

No smile.

No sarcastic expression.

No raised eyebrow.

Nothing.

Then the young man turned another page.

There were no more pages.

Only a photograph of the storage cases.

Small.

Orderly.

Labeled.

As though the contents were valuable components being prepared for resale.

Kade looked at the picture.

For a long time.

Then he carefully closed the folder.

He placed it on the plotting table.

Straightened its edges.

And rested both hands beside it.

Aaron swallowed.

“Commander?”

Kade didn’t answer.

The lieutenant waited.

Outside, a vehicle passed along the road.

Its engine faded into the distance.

The clock on the wall ticked.

Peter remained still.

Then Kade spoke.

His voice was very quiet.

“Property.”

Neither officer answered.

The Commander looked toward the folder.

“That’s what they called them.”

Aaron swallowed.

“Yes, sir.”

Kade nodded once.

Then his eyes moved toward the photograph of Ironwake.

For a moment, something changed in his expression.

A terrible stillness settled over him.

Not confusion.

Not disbelief.

Recognition.

Of an idea.

An excuse.

The kind of excuse people used when they wanted to do something cruel without admitting what it was.

The kind of excuse that turned a human being into a resource and then insisted that the word made everything acceptable.

Kade stared at the photograph.

And said nothing.

For the first time that morning, Aaron wished the Commander would make a joke.

Any joke.

Even a terrible one.

Especially a terrible one.

Kade did not.

A Word Older Than the War

Kade had heard the word before.

Property.

He had heard it spoken in palaces.

In courtrooms.

In military camps.

In the offices of men who wore fine clothes and believed the suffering of other people became respectable once it was entered into an official ledger.

He’d heard it attached to land.

To food.

To animals.

To weapons.

And, sometimes, to people.

The first time he’d heard the word used that way, he’d been young enough to believe that adults were supposed to know better.

He had lost that particular belief rather quickly.

A memory stirred.

A stone chamber.

A circle of light.

Voices celebrating.

A child standing far from home while strangers congratulated themselves on receiving a Hero.

He’d been twelve.

He hadn’t wanted glory.

He hadn’t wanted a kingdom.

He hadn’t wanted a Holy Weapon.

He’d wanted to go home.

Back to Mizunokuni.

Back to the familiar roads, the crowded market stalls, the people who knew his name, and the family who would have searched for him if they’d known where to look.

Instead, strangers had told him what he’d been chosen to do.

Some had been kind.

Some had meant well.

Others had looked at him the way a starving army might look at a newly delivered shipment of weapons.

Useful.

Powerful.

Necessary.

The distinction between saving people and being owned by the people he was expected to save had taken him years to understand.

Then more years to fight.

Kade stood above the intelligence folder.

The old memory passed across his mind without changing his expression.

He’d learned long ago that memories could be dangerous things if he allowed them to decide what his hands did before his judgment caught up.

The people in this room knew nothing of Wysteria.

They knew him as Horizon’s Commander.

An eighteen-year-old former player.

A boy who was too short for half the furniture in the administration building and whose sarcasm had become a minor occupational hazard.

That was enough.

They did not need to know about the Gauntlets.

They did not need to know what the last sixteen years of his first life had demanded.

They certainly did not need to know that the phrase they’re ours now had awakened memories he preferred to leave buried.

Kade looked down at his hands.

Small hands.

Young hands.

Not the hands of the twenty-eight-year-old man who’d died at the end of the Final Wave.

But they remembered more than they should have.

He slowly relaxed his fingers.

One at a time.

Then he took a breath.

It was quiet enough that Aaron didn’t notice.

Another followed.

Kade looked toward the folder again.

Three Pendants in a case.

A ledger.

Account claimant.

Restoration priority.

He thought of Riko.

Loud, stubborn Riko, who had spent the previous Thursday learning that a carefully placed volleyball could defeat a great deal of confidence.

He thought of Yuna’s fairies, who had built him a tiny invitation card.

Of Aster, seated beneath a beach umbrella with her medical restrictions tucked into a bag beside her.

Of Hana, who treated damaged machinery as a problem to be solved and exhausted herself trying to make sure everyone else had working equipment.

Of Calla and June.

Elsa.

Nadya.

Senko.

Mina.

Emi.

Scarlett.

Adelheid.

Marina.

Each of them a person.

Each with preferences, fears, irritating habits, friendships, and choices that belonged to them alone.

He imagined someone writing Riko’s name beside the words account claimant.

His jaw tightened.

He imagined Yuna being told that the person who’d shot her down now owned the right to decide whether she could be restored.

His stomach turned.

He imagined an exhausted, frightened Keelborn waking after an impossibly difficult reconstruction only to find armed strangers telling her she was no longer permitted to choose whom she served.

Kade’s expression remained still.

Then he closed his eyes for one brief moment.

No.

The word formed without sound.

Not a plan.

Not an order.

Not yet.

Just a refusal.

A very old refusal.

When he opened his eyes, Aaron was watching him.

The lieutenant looked uncertain.

“Commander?”

Kade glanced toward him.

For a moment, he seemed to be searching for a suitable response.

Then he asked:

“Do we know whether any of these girls have actually been restored?”

Aaron blinked.

He’d expected anger.

Not another question.

He looked toward the folder.

“No verified cases.”

“Any proof that the rogues have functioning Keelborn reconstruction equipment?”

“No.”

“Any proof that an account claim gives them control over a restored person?”

Aaron shook his head.

“No.”

“Good.”

The intelligence officer hesitated.

“Good?”

Kade looked toward the photograph.

“Yes.”

He tapped the dossier.

“Because I want the distinction understood. They are collecting Pendants. That appears to be supported. They intend to use restoration technology. That is supported by the witness accounts and their own statements.”

Aaron nodded.

“But their claim that a person becomes someone else’s property because a name was written into an account field?”

The Commander looked directly at him.

“That is nonsense.”

The lieutenant released a breath.

“Yes, sir.”

Kade continued.

“And we will not repeat that nonsense as though it’s a technical fact.”

“No, sir.”

“Do they have a working facility?”

“Unknown.”

“Do they understand what restoration requires?”

“Probably not completely.”

“Do they have the materials?”

“We can’t establish that.”

“Then don’t say they’re reviving people on demand.”

Aaron nodded.

“I won’t.”

Kade looked toward the folder.

His expression remained hard.

“But do not mistake their incompetence for harmlessness.”

The lieutenant straightened.

“No, sir.”

The Commander tapped the photograph again.

“A man who believes he owns someone can hurt her whether his paperwork is valid or not.”

For several seconds, the Operations Room was silent.

Then Kade continued.

“If they restore one of those girls, she doesn’t wake up as a reward item. She wakes up as herself. Maybe injured. Maybe frightened. Maybe confused. And if those people are waiting with guns and restraints, then their fantasy about account ownership becomes a real threat.”

Aaron swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Even if they never restore a single Pendant, they can still prevent other people from recovering their friends.”

Peter looked toward the case photograph.

His face had gone pale.

Kade continued.

“They can hide them. Damage them. Move them beyond our reach. Use them to extort families and commanders. Trade them to other groups who are just as confused.”

He paused.

“Or destroy them because somebody decides a trophy is worth more than a life.”

The younger operations officer looked away.

Aaron lowered his eyes.

Kade’s voice remained quiet.

“That’s why the distinction matters.”

For a while, nobody spoke.

Then the Commander opened the folder again.

He turned to the inventory page.

“Count.”

Aaron looked up.

“Sir?”

“How many Pendants can we identify from the documents?”

The lieutenant moved beside him.

“Three in the photograph. At least four additional entries in the partial inventory, though some may refer to the same items.”

“Do we have confirmed unique identifiers?”

“Two legible. One partly obscured.”

“Names?”

“No reliable personal names. Mostly ship classes and claimant codes.”

Kade nodded.

“Then we have photographic evidence of three suspected Pendants, a ledger suggesting a larger collection, and statements about others. We do not have a confirmed total.”

Aaron nodded.

“Correct.”

The Commander looked toward Peter.

“Write that into the operational summary.”

The younger officer reached for a pen.

“Yes, sir.”

Kade considered the photograph.

Then spoke again.

“And wherever possible, identify the girls.”

Aaron’s expression softened.

“We’ll try.”

“Not just the classes.”

“Yes.”

“Names. Home ports. Last assignments. Friends. Families if they have them.”

The lieutenant nodded.

“Understood.”

Kade looked toward him.

“Those are people we’re trying to find.”

Aaron held his gaze.

Then nodded again.

“Yes, Commander.”

For several minutes, the room returned to work.

Peter revised the plotting notes.

Aaron checked the witness statements.

The duty communications personnel continued their normal traffic, though the volume of messages had begun increasing as other Pacific stations acknowledged the Halcyon warning.

Kade stood beside the map.

He was no longer reading.

He was thinking.

The rogue fleet’s alleged purpose wasn’t merely to collect supplies.

It was to collect power.

And, in the minds of at least some of its members, power included possession of other people.

That changed the threat.

A pirate force wanted resources.

A mutinous military unit might want independence, territory, or control of an existing command structure.

A group convinced it was participating in a special game event could want all of those things while refusing to accept the consequences of its actions.

But a group that believed Keelborn were collectible units had another incentive.

It would seek battles.

Not simply avoid them.

It might deliberately attack valuable Keelborn because sinking them produced the Pendants the attackers wanted.

It might prefer to capture a severely damaged opponent rather than allow her to escape.

It might prioritize restoration equipment even when ordinary logistics suggested choosing something easier.

It might strike an island that contained unusual naval machinery despite the risk.

Kade looked toward the Burnt Narrows.

His eyes narrowed.

The island had once contained significant industrial infrastructure.

The Blackwake had used parts of it.

Horizon had fought there.

Horizon had recovered supplies from it.

And now rumors of valuable salvage were spreading through former-player channels.

He reached for the chart.

Then turned toward Aaron.

“Do any of the intercepted messages mention restoration equipment?”

The lieutenant looked up.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Aaron opened another file.

“One message refers to something called a ‘revival workshop.’ Another mentions needing a higher-tier naval facility.”

Kade frowned.

“Actual locations?”

“No confirmed coordinates.”

“Any mention of the Burnt Narrows?”

“Not explicitly in those messages.”

The Commander considered that.

Then pointed toward the chart.

“Does Ironwake know we’ve recovered supplies from there?”

Aaron hesitated.

“Probably.”

“Why?”

“The battle was substantial. Survivors and shipping crews have been talking. The appearance of Breakwater and the Keelborn reinforcements was reported on several informal channels.”

Kade nodded.

“The damage?”

“Also reported.”

“Casualties?”

Aaron paused.

“Some.”

Kade’s expression darkened.

“Names?”

“I don’t believe the broader channels have reliable details.”

The Commander was quiet.

For a moment, he thought of Thomas Reed’s marked grave.

Then of Mateo’s sister.

He looked toward the map again.

“Which means they’re hearing that a damaged battleship fought a carrier force and recovered valuable salvage.”

“Yes.”

“And that the area may contain further industrial equipment.”

“Yes.”

Kade nodded slowly.

“From their perspective, that’s an attractive target.”

Aaron looked toward him.

“Very.”

The Commander studied the chart.

Then he picked up the pencil.

Beside the Burnt Narrows marker, he wrote:

POTENTIAL HIGH-VALUE TARGET — UNCONFIRMED

He underlined the last word.

Aaron watched.

Kade continued.

“Now show me every other location within a comparable travel window that might interest them.”

The lieutenant hesitated.

“Sir?”

“We don’t fall in love with one theory.”

Aaron nodded.

“Right.”

Kade looked toward Peter.

“You too.”

The younger officer straightened.

“Yes, Commander.”

“Find me alternatives.”

For the next half hour, the three men worked through the possibilities.

A fuel depot on a northern route.

A repair anchorage closer to the mainland.

A damaged submarine facility.

Two smaller cargo stations.

An island with a modest naval-aircraft servicing yard.

And the Burnt Narrows.

Each target had advantages.

Each had problems.

The northern depot was farther from the rogue fleet’s last confirmed movement, but its fuel stores were valuable.

The repair anchorage possessed machinery, but recent patrol reports suggested stronger defenses.

The submarine facility might interest a fleet seeking torpedo supplies, though its damaged status made the expected rewards uncertain.

The smaller cargo stations were easier targets but less valuable individually.
