Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

The first sign that something was wrong at Horizon Atoll was that Aster had managed to eat an entire bowl of noodles without anybody accusing her of hitting a bollard.

This was, by the standards of the naval station, a remarkable achievement.

Aster herself considered it evidence that the evening was progressing exceptionally well.

She sat at a long wooden table in the station’s mess hall, leaning over an oversized bowl of noodles while the battered ceiling fans stirred warm tropical air above the diners. Her dark auburn hair was tied back with its familiar red ribbon, although the bow had become slightly crooked during the afternoon, and a faint streak of grease remained beneath her left ear.

Her naval rigging was safely stored in the maintenance building.

She had washed her hands.

She had even remembered to submit her inspection report.

As far as Aster was concerned, she deserved some recognition.

Naturally, nobody was providing any.

She looked toward the young man seated across from her.

”Commander.”

Kade Bher lifted his eyes from his dinner.

”Hm?”

”I’ve been thinking.”

”Condolences.”

Aster stared at him.

Riko made a noise into her drink.

Hana looked down at her bowl, her shoulders shaking.

Yuna attempted to disguise a smile behind her chopsticks.

Aster pointed toward Kade.

”See? This is exactly what I’m talking about!”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

”You haven’t actually said what you’re talking about.”

”Respect!”

He considered that.

”For whom?”

”Me!”

”Oh.”

Aster leaned forward.

”Oh?”

”That’s unfortunate.”

Riko burst out laughing.

Hana finally surrendered and laughed into her hand.

Yuna shook her head.

Aster looked around the table with the wounded expression of a woman who had discovered that her allies were unreliable.

”Unbelievable.”

Kade took another bite of his dinner.

”I agree.”

”You’re the problem!”

”I’ve been here for one day.”

”And you’ve already become the problem!”

He nodded.

”Efficient.”

Aster opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Then looked toward Hana.

”How do you argue with him?”

Hana thought about that.

”You don’t.”

”That’s terrible advice.”

”He’s quite good at making people continue an argument long after he’s stopped participating.”

Kade looked toward her.

”Am I?”

”Yes.”

”Interesting.”

”Don’t.”

He smiled.

Hana sighed.

Riko leaned back, thoroughly entertained.

”I like him.”

Yuna glanced toward her.

”You’ve said that six times.”

”Have I?”

”Yes.”

”Then I must mean it.”

Across from them, Kade continued eating with the contentment of someone who had recently discovered that the station’s kitchen produced considerably better food than its infrastructure reports had led him to expect.

The noodles were good.

The broth was excellent.

The portions were generous enough that he had briefly wondered whether the cook was attempting to compensate for some other deficiency in the naval station.

He had decided not to investigate.

A working mess hall was a blessing.

A working mess hall that served good food was practically a strategic asset.

He intended to appreciate it.

The room itself was hardly luxurious.

Horizon Atoll’s main mess hall occupied a long concrete building near the administrative district. Its broad windows overlooked a courtyard planted with palms, and its walls were painted a faded cream color that had probably been considerably more cheerful when the paint was new.

Several ceiling fans rotated overhead.

A television near the serving counter displayed a local news bulletin.

The bulletin concerned supply priorities, weather conditions, and a disagreement between two regional port authorities regarding maintenance allocations.

Nobody appeared especially interested.

Most of the diners were station personnel finishing their evening meals.

Some wore naval uniforms.

Others wore industrial work clothes.

A few Keelborn sat together near the windows, their voices rising above the ordinary clatter of plates and cutlery.

Farther back, two SIA Dolls in dark service uniforms were discussing tomorrow’s patrol assignments while sharing a large bowl of rice.

One of them had taken off her jacket and folded it over the back of her chair.

Her companion was attempting to convince her that a damaged boot should be reported to maintenance.

”It still works,” the first Doll insisted.

The second looked under the table.

”The sole is separating.”

”Only slightly.”

”You can see your sock.”

”Ventilation.”

”That’s not ventilation.”

”Comfortable ventilation.”

The second Doll sighed.

”Please report it.”

”After dinner.”

”You said that yesterday.”

”And now I’m saying it again.”

Kade overheard enough of the conversation to smile.

Apparently the inability to admit that one’s equipment needed maintenance was a universal military tradition.

Riko followed his glance.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

She turned.

Saw the two Dolls.

Then looked back at him.

”Something funny?”

”Just appreciating the commitment to avoiding paperwork.”

Hana looked up.

”Don’t encourage that.”

”Wouldn’t dream of it.”

”You’re already smiling.”

”Medical condition.”

Yuna laughed quietly.

Outside, the last traces of daylight had begun withdrawing behind the harbor buildings.

The tropical evening was settling over the island.

Beyond the mess hall courtyard, the station’s old lamps illuminated pathways between administrative offices, barracks, workshops, and supply buildings.

Several worked properly.

Others flickered.

A few remained dark.

The restored western navigation beacon shone in the distance, its white beam sweeping slowly across the approaching darkness.

Kade could see it whenever the angle of the windows allowed.

He found the sight unexpectedly satisfying.

One day.

One functioning beacon.

A whole island full of other problems.

It wasn’t bad progress.

Especially considering that he had entered the game with the specific intention of avoiding schoolwork, responsibilities, and anything that resembled a meeting.

He had somehow spent his first afternoon supervising electrical repairs.

He considered that mildly suspicious.

Perhaps he had a talent for accidentally becoming employed.

The thought amused him.

He returned his attention to dinner.

Across from him, Riko had opened another page of her character progression information.

The enormous A-150 battleship model rotated above her tablet.

Kade looked toward it.

Then toward her.

”Still studying that thing?”

Riko nodded enthusiastically.

”Of course.”

”Planning the next refit?”

”Several.”

Hana lowered her chopsticks.

”Riko.”

”What?”

”You haven’t completed the first one.”

”I’m planning ahead.”

”You’re planning about six rebuilds ahead.”

”That’s called ambition.”

”That’s called making me very tired.”

Riko smiled sweetly.

”You’ll help.”

Hana stared at her.

”I have no idea why I agreed to be your repair ship.”

”Because we’re friends.”

”An unfortunate weakness.”

Yuna smiled.

”I think it’ll be fun.”

Hana looked toward her.

”You’re not the one who’ll have to figure out how to maintain four twin twenty-inch turrets.”

Yuna considered that.

”True.”

Riko pointed at her.

”Traitor.”

Yuna laughed.

Kade leaned back.

”Personally, I think the most impressive part is that you’ve found a way to make a Yamato-class battleship look like an intermediate step.”

Riko brightened.

”Exactly!”

”That’s a remarkable accomplishment.”

”Thank you!”

”Historically concerning, but remarkable.”

Her smile faltered.

”Historically concerning?”

He gestured toward the model.

”Somewhere, a naval architect is having a very difficult evening.”

Hana laughed.

Riko opened her mouth to argue.

Then closed it and looked at the diagram.

”...Probably.”

”Good. Progress.”

Aster leaned over to inspect the display.

”Can it shoot a harbor bollard?”

There was a silence.

Kade slowly turned toward her.

Riko stared.

Hana lowered her head.

Yuna covered her mouth.

Aster blinked.

Then realized what she had said.

”Oh, for—”

The table erupted into laughter.

Aster buried her face in her hands.

”I DID IT TO MYSELF!”

”Yes,” Kade agreed.

Riko nearly fell out of her chair.

Hana was laughing too hard to speak.

Yuna had to put down her drink before she spilled it.

Aster remained motionless, forehead pressed against her palms, while her friends thoroughly enjoyed the moment.

At another table, one of the Allen M. Sumner-class girls looked over.

”Did somebody say bollard?”

Aster raised her head.

”NO!”

The Sumner girl blinked.

Then smiled.

”All right!”

She turned back to her dinner.

Aster slowly lowered her face onto the table.

Kade regarded her with what he considered appropriate sympathy.

”Rough day?”

She answered without lifting her head.

”I hate this island.”

”Understandable.”

”I hate all of you.”

”Also understandable.”

”I hate bollards.”

”That one’s mutual, apparently.”

Aster made a noise of pure despair.

Riko started laughing again.

For another few minutes, the mess hall remained a perfectly ordinary place.

Food was served.

People talked.

The ceiling fans turned.

Somewhere outside, a maintenance truck changed gears with a grinding protest that suggested Hana would soon have another problem to investigate.

Aster eventually recovered enough dignity to finish her noodles.

Riko continued plotting the acquisition of absurd naval artillery.

Yuna offered to help organize the next day’s meeting.

Hana insisted that they needed an accurate equipment inventory before anybody made grand promises concerning the drydock.

Kade listened, contributed the occasional remark, and gradually began forming a practical idea of what tomorrow might require.

It was a pleasant evening.

So pleasant, in fact, that he had almost stopped thinking about the fact that he was inside a game.

Almost.

Then, elsewhere in the mess hall, a sailor stopped in the middle of a sentence.

He looked toward the window.

His companion noticed.

”What?”

The sailor frowned.

”Did you feel that?”

”Feel what?”

He hesitated.

”Nothing.”

Then he shook his head.

”Must have been a truck.”

The conversation resumed.

Outside, the palms moved gently in the evening breeze.

Beacon Three continued turning.

And across the distant oceans of the game’s alternate Earth, the last active player-controlled vessels were returning to their ports.

In a fortress harbor thousands of kilometers away, a carrier formation completed its approach beneath a cloudy evening sky.

One of the carrier girls glanced toward the horizon.

”That’s everyone?”

Her companion checked the incoming aircraft reports.

”Last squadron is landing.”

”Good.”

The final aircraft descended.

Its wheels touched the carrier’s fitted deck.

The arresting mechanism caught.

The girl controlling the equipment released a breath and smiled.

”All home.”

Elsewhere, a destroyer squadron entered a narrow channel between armored breakwaters.

Their rigging was still warm from recent operations.

A young woman at the front of the group raised her radio.

”Harbor Control, requesting permission to enter.”

A crackling voice answered.

”Permission granted. Proceed to assigned berths.”

The destroyers accelerated toward shore.

At another installation, a battleship girl stepped onto a maintenance platform, allowing technicians to disconnect the heavy components of her rigging.

An enormous gun mount settled into its cradle.

Locking clamps engaged.

A mechanic raised one hand.

”You’re clear.”

The battleship smiled.

”Thank you.”

On an island airfield, a player assigned to an aviation support position entered a concrete operations building just as the last aircraft rolled into shelter.

In a snowbound fortress farther north, a repair party reached its barracks after completing work on a damaged defensive emplacement.

In a crowded Pacific port, dozens of Keelborn returned from evening patrol.

Some laughed.

Some complained.

Some went directly to dinner.

Others hurried toward their rooms, eager to finish their sessions and rest.

Across continents and oceans, a strange coincidence unfolded.

Players who had been operating above open water or moving through dangerous environments completed their immediate journeys.

Those in aircraft reached their landing points.

Those moving across the sea came ashore.

Those in repair operations stepped onto stable maintenance platforms or solid floors.

Even people who had been rushing between locations found themselves somewhere they could safely stand.

None of them understood the significance.

Why would they?

They were playing a game.

A difficult, spectacular, extraordinarily convincing game, but a game nonetheless.

Tomorrow, they expected, there would be more sorties.

More equipment upgrades.

More arguments about fleet assignments.

More opportunities to explore the strange drowned Earth that had drawn them all into its oceans.

For tonight, they were merely finishing what they had been doing.

And when the last of them stood upon solid ground, the world moved.

The first tremor was so small that Kade mistook it for the passing of another heavy truck.

A spoon rattled against a ceramic bowl.

The water in his glass developed a series of tiny ripples.

Overhead, the ceiling fan made an unfamiliar sound.

Kade looked up.

The fan continued rotating.

Click.

Click.

Then the lights flickered.

Hana noticed first.

”Was that the generator?”

Chief Fenwick, who had just entered the mess hall carrying a small folder, stopped near the doorway.

She looked toward the ceiling.

”No.”

The floor shifted.

Not much.

Only enough to make the legs of several chairs scrape against the tiles.

Aster lifted her head.

”...Okay, that wasn’t me.”

Nobody laughed.

A deeper vibration rolled through the building.

The windows rattled.

Somewhere beyond the courtyard, metal structures began groaning.

Kade set down his chopsticks.

”Earthquake?”

Chief Fenwick’s expression sharpened.

”Everyone away from the windows.”

Another tremor passed beneath them.

Stronger.

A stack of dishes clattered behind the serving counter.

Someone shouted.

Kade pushed his chair backward.

”Under the tables or outside?”

Chief Fenwick looked toward the ceiling.

The building shuddered again.

”Cover first! Stay clear of glass!”

Kade moved.

He had barely placed one hand against the nearest table when the floor lurched sideways.

The entire mess hall seemed to tilt.

A chair fell.

Glass shattered near the serving counter.

Somebody screamed.

Riko grabbed the table.

”WHAT THE HELL?”

Hana stumbled against her chair.

Yuna caught the edge of the bench.

Aster rose halfway, apparently intending to help somebody across the room.

Then stopped.

Her expression went blank.

For one strange instant, she looked almost puzzled.

”...Ow?”

Kade turned toward her.

”Aster?”

She lifted one hand to her forehead.

Her face twisted.

”Ah—”

Then Kade felt it.

And every thought he had been about to form vanished.

Pain erupted behind his eyes.

There was no gradual warning.

No ordinary throbbing headache.

No familiar discomfort that could be endured by closing his eyes and waiting for it to pass.

Something seemed to drive an enormous spike through the center of his skull.

He staggered.

His knees struck the floor.

The impact barely registered.

His vision flashed white.

Then black.

Then white again.

An unbearable pressure spread through his head, behind his eyes, down the back of his neck, and into his teeth.

For one disorienting instant, he thought something inside him had ruptured.

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Across the table, Riko screamed.

Not a theatrical scream.

Not an exaggerated complaint.

A raw, involuntary sound of pain.

She clutched her head with both hands and collapsed from her chair.

Yuna fell beside her.

Hana struck the table hard enough to knock several plates to the floor.

Aster crumpled where she stood.

Around the mess hall, every player experienced the same catastrophic pain.

The Keelborn near the windows fell from their benches.

One of the Allen M. Sumner girls attempted to stand, managed half a step, and collapsed.

The South Dakota-class player dropped to her knees beside the serving counter.

A girl who had been laughing only seconds earlier pressed both hands against her temples and began sobbing through clenched teeth.

Kade tried to breathe.

The pain intensified.

His body no longer seemed to obey him.

He heard Chief Fenwick shouting.

”MEDIC!”

The word came from somewhere impossibly far away.

Kade tried to turn his head.

The movement sent another wave of agony through him.

He collapsed onto his side.

His cheek struck the cold tile.

The building was still shaking.

But the earthquake had become almost irrelevant.

Because the pain was no longer the worst part.

Something was happening inside his head.

Something was opening.

A door.

No.

Not a door.

That was too simple.

It was as if an enormous portion of his own existence had been locked behind a wall, and the wall had suddenly been torn apart.

Memories struck him.

Not images from the game.

Not things he had watched on a television or read in a character biography.

Memories.

His memories.

A child’s hands.

Rain.

A market lantern.

The smell of warm food.

A woman kneeling in front of him.

Golden fox ears.

Nine tails.

A young voice, confident and curious.

What’s your name?

He tried to answer.

The memory disappeared beneath another.

A mountain road.

A red bridge.

A narrow room lit by paper lanterns.

Someone laughing.

A woman with an enormous presence leaning down toward him, smiling as though the laws of reality were a private joke she had already understood.

Kade.

He knew that voice.

He knew—

Another memory struck.

A corridor of unfamiliar stone.

A summoning circle.

Robed strangers.

A sacred weapon appearing around his hands.

He was twelve years old.

He was frightened.

People were celebrating.

They were celebrating because they had successfully stolen him.

The name of that world came back.

Wysteria.

Kade’s fingers curled against the floor.

The pain behind his eyes became unbearable.

His mouth moved.

”...No.”

He wasn’t speaking to Chief Fenwick.

He wasn’t speaking to the game.

He was speaking to something that had already happened.

Something he remembered.

And something he desperately wished he didn’t.

Chief Petty Officer Mara Fenwick had served at Horizon Atoll long enough to recognize a disaster when one arrived.

She had seen tropical storms tear the roofs from warehouses.

She had watched a cargo crane fail during unloading and send several tons of equipment into the lagoon.

She had spent three days coordinating emergency water distribution after the station’s main processing system broke down during a heat wave.

She had once personally removed a rat from the communications cabinet while the technician assigned to the task stood on a chair and provided exceptionally unhelpful encouragement.

She was not easily frightened.

The earthquake frightened her.

Not because the building shook.

Horizon Atoll had survived seismic disturbances before.

Its foundations were old, but the mess hall was built from reinforced concrete, and the ceiling showed no immediate signs of collapse.

What frightened her was what happened to the Keelborn.

They fell.

All of them.

In the same few seconds.

Some cried out.

Others collapsed without a sound.

The new Commander went down beside the central table, clutching his head.

Chief Fenwick had barely reached him when the shaking intensified.

A stack of plates fell behind the serving counter.

An electrical fixture sparked.

Someone shouted that a window had broken.

”EVERYONE STAY DOWN!”

She dropped beside Kade.

His eyes were squeezed shut.

His jaw was clenched so tightly that she could see the muscles standing out along his cheeks.

For a moment, she thought he was having a seizure.

”Commander!”

No answer.

She reached for his shoulder.

”Commander Bher, can you hear me?”

His body jerked.

He made a strained sound.

Then curled inward.

The chief looked toward the nearest sailor.

”Medical personnel. Now!”

The sailor nodded and ran toward the door.

Another member of the station staff approached.

”Chief, the Keelborn—”

”I can see them!”

”There are more outside!”

”How many?”

”All of them!”

She froze.

”What?”

”Every Keelborn we can see! They’re going down!”

Chief Fenwick looked around.

Riko lay beside an overturned chair.

Hana was unconscious near the table.

Yuna had collapsed against the bench.

Aster lay on her side with one arm bent awkwardly beneath her.

The other Keelborn were in equally terrible condition.

But the ordinary sailors were still standing.

So were the kitchen staff.

The two SIA Dolls near the rear of the room had risen immediately and were helping keep fallen furniture away from the unconscious girls.

Neither appeared to be suffering the same pain.

The chief looked back at Kade.

He wasn’t a Keelborn.

He was human.

Yet he had collapsed at exactly the same moment.

A cold realization began forming.

This was not ordinary seismic injury.

Something else was happening.

The earthquake continued.

The chief braced one hand against the table while a cabinet rattled against the wall.

”Get everybody away from anything that can fall! Check breathing! Do not move anyone with a suspected neck injury unless they’re in immediate danger!”

The two SIA Dolls moved without hesitation.

One carefully shifted a fallen chair away from Yuna.

The other knelt beside a South Dakota-class girl whose head had struck the edge of the serving counter.

”She’s breathing,” the Doll reported.

”Good. Keep her still.”

Chief Fenwick looked toward the doors.

”Where’s medical?”

”Coming!”

A deeper tremor rolled beneath the building.

The floor shuddered.

A fluorescent light shattered.

Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the shaking stopped.

The silence afterward was worse.

The ceiling fans continued turning.

One of the cooks was crying quietly behind the counter.

Water dripped from a broken pipe near the wall.

Outside, alarms began sounding across the naval station.

But inside the mess hall, the fallen Keelborn did not move.

Neither did the Commander.

Chief Fenwick pressed two fingers against Kade’s neck.

A pulse.

Rapid.

Strong.

He was breathing.

She exhaled.

”All right.”

Her voice was quieter now.

”All right, Commander. Stay with us.”

He did not answer.

The chief looked toward the others.

”Blankets. Medical bags. Anything useful. Now.”

The room burst into motion.

And Chief Fenwick, who had spent years keeping a neglected naval station functioning through sheer persistence, discovered that she had never been more grateful for the station’s remaining medical staff.

Because she had absolutely no idea what was happening.

A few minutes later, the first reports began reaching the mess hall.

They were almost impossible to believe.

The Keelborn had collapsed throughout the station.

Every one of the newly arrived player detachments.

The girls at the maintenance platforms.

The destroyers inside the barracks.

The battleships preparing for evening inspections.

The carrier personnel in the aviation district.

Anyone who had been standing, sitting, or walking was now unconscious.

Several had suffered injuries when they fell.

Others remained physically unharmed apart from whatever had caused the terrible pain.

The base’s ordinary human personnel were frightened but generally conscious.

The SIA Dolls and other station inhabitants were similarly unaffected by the mysterious collapse, though several had been injured by falling objects during the earthquake.

The same pattern was being reported elsewhere.

A radio operator approached Chief Fenwick with a handset.

”Chief. Regional Command.”

She took it.

”This is Fenwick.”

Static crackled.

”Horizon Atoll, confirm status of newly assigned naval personnel.”

Fenwick looked toward the motionless girls.

”Mass casualty incident. Multiple Keelborn unconscious following seismic activity. Commander Bher also affected.”

A pause.

”Your Commander?”

”Yes.”

”Human officer?”

”Yes.”

Another pause.

”Stand by.”

She heard distant voices.

Paper rustling.

Then someone else took the channel.

”Horizon Atoll, this is regional medical coordination. Are any non-Keelborn personnel exhibiting the same symptoms?”

”Not among our established station staff.”

”Any SIA units?”

”No.”

”Are the affected personnel newly assigned?”

”Most of them.”

The voice hesitated.

”Understood. Continue emergency medical care. Do not attempt to reactivate unconscious personnel through electrical stimulation or other nonstandard procedures.”

Chief Fenwick stared at the radio.

”Why would I do that?”

The officer on the other end sounded exhausted.

”We are distributing that instruction to all reporting facilities.”

”What exactly is happening?”

Silence.

Then:

”We don’t know.”

Chief Fenwick looked toward Kade.

He remained motionless.

Around him, several medical personnel were checking the others.

The chief tightened her grip on the handset.

”Find out.”

”We’re trying.”

The transmission ended.

Fenwick lowered the radio.

She looked toward the station medic who had just arrived beside Kade.

”How is he?”

The medic knelt beside the unconscious Commander.

Her name was Irena Holt.

She wore a pale medical uniform beneath a dark field jacket, and her hair had been hastily tied back in a practical knot. There was a small scar beside her left eyebrow, earned years earlier during a coastal evacuation when a piece of broken glass had struck her face.

She had served as a medical corpsman long enough to know that a patient could look perfectly healthy while something terrible was happening beneath the surface.

She checked Kade’s pupils.

Then his breathing.

Then his pulse.

”Stable.”

Chief Fenwick exhaled.

”Good.”

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from NovelPhoenix; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

”Unconscious, but stable.”

”Can you wake him?”

Irena looked toward her.

”Not safely by forcing it.”

”Any sign of head trauma?”

”Nothing obvious. No external bleeding. No indication that the fall caused major injury.”

She hesitated.

”The headache appears to have preceded the collapse.”

The chief nodded.

”Yes.”

”Did he say anything?”

”Not much.”

”What did he say?”

Fenwick thought back.

She remembered his expression.

The terrible pain.

The way his fingers curled against the floor.

Then one strained word.

”No.”

She looked at Irena.

”Only that.”

The medic nodded.

”All right.”

She checked his breathing again.

Then reached for a blanket.

”We need to move him to a proper bed once we’re satisfied his neck and spine are safe.”

Chief Fenwick looked toward the others.

”And the Keelborn?”

”Same priority. Airway, breathing, circulation, injuries from falling. We can move the stable patients to medical facilities when transport is ready.”

She glanced toward Riko.

Then Hana.

Then Yuna.

Then Aster.

Her expression tightened.

”I’ve never seen anything like this.”

”Neither have I,” Chief Fenwick admitted.

For a while, neither woman spoke.

The station continued responding to the earthquake.

Emergency crews checked damaged buildings.

Harbor Control verified that the navigational lights were still operating.

The restored Beacon Three continued sweeping the western channel.

And across the island, the unconscious players remained unresponsive.

Then something even stranger began happening.

The first report came from the maintenance district.

A newly assigned destroyer girl had changed appearance while unconscious.

Her hair had become shorter.

Her face had changed.

Her height had altered.

The medical team initially suspected a magical transformation, though no familiar energy signature could be identified.

A second report followed.

Then a third.

Then Chief Fenwick watched it happen with her own eyes.

Riko Minase lay on a temporary medical stretcher near the mess hall wall.

One moment, she was the tall Yamato-class Keelborn who had spent the afternoon discussing gigantic guns and restoration projects.

The next, her appearance began to change.

It was not violent.

There was no flash of light.

No explosion.

No burst of supernatural energy.

Her features simply seemed to lose the form they had previously held.

The carefully customized proportions of her avatar receded.

Her face shifted.

Her dark hair shortened.

Her height diminished.

And within a few seconds, the person lying on the stretcher looked like an ordinary nineteen-year-old woman.

Not the imposing battleship girl from the afternoon.

Not the carefully designed Yamato-class avatar.

A young woman with an entirely different face.

The medic beside her recoiled.

”What—”

Chief Fenwick stepped forward.

”Riko?”

The unconscious girl did not answer.

Her naval pendant remained at her chest.

Her uniform still bore the appropriate insignia.

Her equipment classification had not changed.

But the face was different.

The chief stared.

Then looked toward Hana.

The same phenomenon was occurring.

The Akashi-class Repair Keelborn’s green-eyed, copper-haired avatar was disappearing, replaced by the ordinary appearance of the young woman who had chosen it.

The decorative cat-ear accessories remained tangled in her hair for a moment before a medic carefully removed them.

Yuna changed too.

Her pale-lavender hair gave way to her natural dark hair.

Her carefully selected violet eyes, currently closed, no longer matched the character design Chief Fenwick remembered.

Aster’s transformation began near the rear of the room.

Her auburn hair changed.

Her face became unfamiliar.

Her body returned to the proportions she possessed beyond the avatar.

Yet the red ribbon remained.

Chief Fenwick stared at them.

Then at the medic.

Irena looked equally bewildered.

”Chief...”

Fenwick swallowed.

”I see it.”

”What are they?”

The question escaped before the medic could stop herself.

Chief Fenwick looked at the unconscious girls.

She thought of Aster arguing about her wrench.

Of Riko discussing the future of the drydock.

Of Hana inspecting the station’s broken machinery.

Of Yuna smiling as the restored beacon began turning.

She looked back at Irena.

”They’re our people.”

The medic held her gaze.

Then nodded.

”Yes, Chief.”

She returned to her patients.

And the station’s medical teams continued working.

Because whatever had just happened to the girls’ appearances, they were still breathing.

They still needed care.

And somebody had to make sure they survived the night.

Kade Bher was three years old.

He was cold.

That was the first thing he understood.

Cold, hungry, and terribly frightened.

Rainwater had soaked the sleeves of his little jacket, and his shoes were muddy from walking along roads he no longer recognized.

The world was enormous.

There were too many unfamiliar sounds.

He remembered crying, although he could not remember when he had started.

Then came a lantern.

Warm yellow light beneath a roof.

The smell of food.

Voices.

A woman crouching to look at him.

She was not frightened of him.

She did not demand to know why he was there.

She did not tell him to leave.

She asked whether he was hungry.

He nodded.

A bowl appeared.

He remembered holding it with both hands.

He remembered being afraid that someone might take it away.

And he remembered the woman gently telling him there would be more if he wanted it.

The Tsuzura Third Stall.

The name returned with such force that it seemed to displace the darkness around him.

He remembered the old wooden counter.

The lanterns.

The market sounds.

The fox women moving between customers.

The smell of steaming rice and sweet bean buns.

A place built around the strange, almost unbelievable notion that a person could be fed without first proving they deserved it.

He remembered sitting beneath a lantern while rain struck the roof.

Then a small girl had approached him.

Golden hair.

Golden fox ears.

Nine enormous tails.

She was four years old.

One year older than him, a distinction she apparently considered tremendously important.

She had tilted her head.

Looked at his bowl.

Then at his face.

”Hello.”

He remembered staring.

She smiled.

”I’m Ranmei.”

His throat tightened.

Ranmei.

Ranmei Sakaime.

The name opened a hundred other memories.

She had taken him to meet Kuroha.

He remembered walking beside her, holding her hand while her enormous tails swayed behind them.

He remembered being frightened of the unfamiliar road.

She had told him not to worry.

She knew where they were going.

Of course she knew.

Ranmei always seemed to know.

Until she didn’t.

He remembered her getting lost once and becoming extremely offended when he pointed it out.

He remembered calling her Aunt Ranmei for the first time.

Her expression had been priceless.

Then came the time he called her Auntie Ranmei in front of Kuroha.

The memory arrived so suddenly that, somewhere inside his unconscious body, Kade almost laughed.

He remembered Ranmei’s ears standing straight up.

Her face turning red.

Kuroha laughing so hard she had to sit down.

And Ranmei threatening to bury him beneath all nine tails.

He remembered her doing exactly that.

It had been a remarkably effective punishment.

Kade wanted to laugh.

Instead, another memory struck.

A woman’s hand resting gently on his head.

Kuroha Sakaime.

She had looked down at him with those strange, knowing eyes.

A woman who understood boundaries, impossible distances, and things that ordinary people did not have words to describe.

He remembered falling asleep in one of her rooms.

He remembered the feeling of being safe there.

The memory opened into others.

Akasuzu Kurenomiya sitting with exaggerated dignity while a small human child cheerfully informed her that she was shorter than he had expected a terrifying vampire aristocrat to be.

Saigetsu Saionji laughing softly in a garden full of butterflies while he tried to understand why everybody became nervous when she offered to tell him about death.

Junrei Hakuen watching him practice a simple exercise with an expression that could have frightened an army, then quietly correcting his stance.

Izayo Shigurezuki moving so quickly that he could never understand how she seemed to appear behind him whenever he attempted to steal an extra pastry.

Hekari Mikagami explaining something about the heavens while existing in more than one place at once, apparently regarding his confusion as perfectly adorable.

Mirei Hoshikado telling him stories beneath painted stars.

Ouka Hinomori showing him how to recognize dangerous equipment, then being forbidden from demonstrating anything involving a miniature sun indoors.

Mamori Kasuragi smiling with the particular expression of someone who had just invented an elaborate prank and was waiting for him to become involved.

Kagera Tsukigase walking beside him along a moonlit road, keeping pace with his much smaller steps.

Kuzuha Fumizuki explaining the importance of reading every word in an agreement before signing it.

Shutenha Arashidō laughing as though the entire world had been created for the express purpose of giving her reasons to celebrate.

Twelve women.

Twelve impossible, extraordinary, frequently ridiculous women.

Twelve aunts.

His aunts.

His family.

He remembered them.

All of them.

Not as entries in a character sheet.

Not as unfamiliar names from a half-remembered childhood story.

He remembered their voices.

Their homes.

Their habits.

The smell of their kitchens.

The way they argued with one another.

The way they worried about him.

The way they loved him.

He remembered an entire country.

Mizunokuni.

Rain-covered roads.

Ring-line trains.

Mountain shrines.

Fox markets.

Ancient bridges.

Electrical machinery installed beside structures older than recorded history.

A civilization that had survived for thousands of years without forgetting that somebody still had to cook dinner, repair the roof, and make sure lost children had somewhere warm to sleep.

He remembered being happy.

That was what hurt.

Not the monsters.

Not the weapons.

Not even the terrible years that followed.

It was remembering that he had once been happy enough to believe the world would always give him another morning.

He had been twelve when that belief was taken away.

The memory changed.

He stood on a familiar road.

Rain drifted through the trees.

He had been thinking about something ordinary.

A conversation.

A meal.

Perhaps an errand someone had asked him to complete.

He couldn’t remember every small detail.

Then light appeared beneath his feet.

Not the familiar glow of Mizunokuni’s boundary roads.

Something foreign.

Something reaching across a distance it had no right to cross.

He remembered trying to move.

The light rose.

The world disappeared.

And suddenly he stood inside a room full of strangers.

Marble floors.

Robed priests.

Armed guards.

Nobles.

A great summoning circle.

People shouted in a language he didn’t understand.

Someone began crying with relief.

Another person fell to their knees.

They looked at him as though his arrival had answered every prayer they had ever made.

He remembered staring at them.

He remembered asking where he was.

Nobody answered the question he actually meant.

He asked to go home.

They told him he had been chosen.

He asked for his family.

They called him blessed.

He remembered looking down.

A pair of magnificent gauntlets had appeared around his hands.

Holy weapons.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Terrible.

The people in the chamber began celebrating again.

They had summoned a Hero.

They had no idea what they had taken.

Or perhaps they did.

Perhaps they simply didn’t care.

Wysteria.

The name struck through him like a hammer.

His entire previous life opened behind it.

Not in orderly sequence.

Not as a collection of pages being turned.

The memories returned together, overlapping in a storm of sensation so overwhelming that he could not separate one year from the next.

He remembered learning the language.

Learning the rules.

Learning how to fight.

He remembered the first time the Gauntlets transformed.

The first time he absorbed a material and watched the weapon respond.

The first time he opened a status display and understood that the numbers were not a harmless abstraction.

He remembered his first battle.

The sound of claws scraping against armor.

The smell of blood.

The awful realization that the people lying on the ground were not going to stand up again when the fighting ended.

He remembered being frightened.

He remembered pretending not to be.

He remembered adults congratulating him.

A child.

Twelve years old.

Covered in blood that wasn’t entirely his.

He remembered someone calling him brave.

He remembered wanting to scream at them.

Then came years.

Entire years.

Snow.

Rain.

Burning villages.

Collapsed fortresses.

Ancient forests.

Mountain passes.

Sickrooms.

Camps full of refugees.

Children crying beside roads.

Soldiers waiting for orders.

The Gauntlets striking flesh, steel, stone, and things that had never belonged in a human world.

He remembered waking before dawn because something outside the camp had moved.

He remembered going days without proper sleep.

He remembered carrying injured people away from battlefields.

He remembered making promises.

Keeping some.

Breaking others.

He remembered names.

So many names.

People he had protected.

People who had protected him.

People who had died because he was not fast enough.

People who had died despite everything he did.

He remembered the Book Hero.

Ayame Fubuki.

A girl who had once been summoned from an ordinary street and told that she possessed a destiny.

She had learned to turn terror into discipline.

She had learned to write down the things everybody else wanted to forget.

He remembered her looking at him over the pages of her Book, exhausted and furious because he had done something stupid again.

He remembered arguing with her.

He remembered making her laugh.

He remembered the way she refused to let the dead become statistics.

He remembered Elias Vale.

The Firearm Guardian.

A man who could make a joke at the worst possible moment and somehow make it sound like the only sensible response to disaster.

He remembered Elias checking his weapon.

He remembered standing beside him.

He remembered an argument about whether a particular maneuver was tactical brilliance or an elaborate attempt to get everybody killed.

He remembered Elias deciding it was probably both.

Kade tried to draw breath.

Inside the returning memories, sixteen years passed without giving him a moment to rest.

He had grown.

Not merely taller.

Older.

Harder.

Stronger.

More experienced.

More tired.

He remembered learning how to command because the people around him needed somebody to make decisions.

He remembered hating those decisions.

He remembered making them anyway.

He remembered how easily the title Hero could become a chain.

How a kingdom could praise someone while denying them the right to refuse.

How people could speak of sacrifice with such reverence that they stopped noticing the person being sacrificed.

He remembered the Curse Series.

The temptation of power born from despair.

The price that power demanded.

He remembered terrible battles in which the easiest way to win would have been to surrender another piece of himself.

He remembered resisting that temptation.

Sometimes successfully.

Sometimes at a cost he would never entirely understand.

He remembered wanting to go home.

For years.

Then, eventually, becoming afraid of what home might be like if he ever reached it.

Would Ranmei still recognize him?

Would Kuroha?

Would his aunts see the boy they had raised?

Or would they see what sixteen years of war had made of him?

The thought had haunted him.

Not constantly.

There had been too much to do for constant grief.

But on quiet nights, when everyone else was sleeping and the fire had burned low, he had wondered.

He remembered those nights.

Then came the last one.

The sky was red.

Not sunset red.

Not the warm crimson of evening clouds.

The sky had been torn open.

Black-gold light pulsed through enormous wounds in reality.

The earth shook.

Monsters poured across a battlefield that no longer resembled any place he had ever known.

The Final Wave.

The Black Wave.

The end of everything.

He remembered the screams.

The broken banners.

The burning airships.

The soldiers holding positions that no longer mattered because their comrades were still trying to escape.

He remembered the Holy Weapons failing.

The Vassal Weapons failing.

Guardian signals disappearing one by one.

He remembered the Heart.

Huge.

Impossible.

Hanging above the battlefield like a wound in the world itself.

He remembered Ayame.

Her Book shaking in her hands.

He remembered Elias.

Bleeding.

Still fighting.

Still refusing to let the enemy close the path ahead.

He remembered understanding that the Heart had to be destroyed.

He remembered understanding what it would cost.

The Gauntlets were breaking.

He was breaking.

Everybody was breaking.

And there was no longer time to find a better answer.

He remembered looking at Ayame.

He remembered what he had asked her.

Write us as people.

Not weapons.

Not titles.

Not the names of legendary artifacts.

People.

He remembered her expression.

He remembered the terrible, furious refusal in her eyes.

He remembered turning toward the Heart anyway.

The Gauntlets answered him.

One last time.

Final Release.

The Holy Weapon began unraveling into his fists.

Not separating.

Not merely changing shape.

Unraveling.

Its power, its structure, and the centuries of authority bound into it were being consumed.

He remembered the pain.

He remembered the first strike.

The Heart’s resistance breaking.

He remembered the second.

The terrible certainty of contact.

The instant when the impossible thing finally gave way.

Then came the light.

And the end.

His last living breath had left him at twenty-eight years old.

He remembered dying.

Not metaphorically.

Not as a dramatic conclusion to a story somebody else had told.

He remembered the moment his body failed.

The sensation of everything ending.

The strange silence afterward.

He remembered the Gauntlets disappearing.

He remembered the System falling away.

He remembered being without a body.

Without a weapon.

Without a title.

For a moment, he had been nothing but himself.

A tired man who had finally reached the end of the road.

Then something distant had brushed against his awareness.

Not a voice.

Not an order.

Not another summoning.

A presence.

Quiet.

Associated with roads, lost travelers, and journeys interrupted before their intended destination.

He remembered it only as a distant impression.

There had been no explanation.

No promise.

No new mission.

Then another life had begun.

Eighteen years.

A different childhood.

Different circumstances.

Different memories.

A history that had always contained strange gaps he couldn’t quite explain.

He remembered existing in the ordinary world without understanding why some things felt familiar.

Why certain dreams left him unsettled.

Why particular sounds or phrases occasionally brought a moment of inexplicable sadness.

Why he sometimes felt as though he had forgotten something too important to have been forgotten.

He had never possessed a satisfactory answer.

He had grown used to not having one.

Until now.

Now the missing years returned.

Now the gaps filled.

Now the two lives met.

And Kade Bher, eighteen years old and lying unconscious on the floor of a military mess hall inside a VRMMORPG, remembered exactly who he had been.

Everything.

The warmth of Mizunokuni.

The terror of Wysteria.

The Gauntlets.

The Heroes.

The Final Wave.

His death.

All of it.

The memories settled into place with an awful completeness.

Then the pain stopped.

And the darkness remained.

When Kade opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was an unfamiliar ceiling.

For approximately three seconds, he regarded this as a problem of moderate importance.

Then the rest of his situation returned to him.

The earthquake.

The mess hall.

The headache.

And the memories.

All of them.

Kade stared at the ceiling.

It was painted a pale institutional green.

A small circular light glowed above the bed.

An old ventilation unit hummed somewhere to his left.

Beyond the half-open curtains, night had settled over Horizon Atoll.

Not evening.

Not the last orange light of sunset.

Full night.

The windows were dark except for the reflected glow of the infirmary’s interior lamps and the occasional sweep of the western beacon far beyond the hospital courtyard.

For several seconds, Kade didn’t move.

He listened.

The ventilation system.

Footsteps in a corridor.

The soft scrape of a chair.

The sound of somebody breathing nearby.

A pen moving across paper.

Then a woman’s voice.

”Commander?”

Kade slowly turned his head.

Chief Petty Officer Mara Fenwick sat beside the bed.

She was still wearing her naval uniform, although the jacket had been removed and folded over the back of her chair. Her sleeves were rolled up, and there were fresh scuff marks on one of her hands.

She looked exhausted.

Not the stylized version of tiredness he associated with NPC animation.

Not a fixed expression.

She had the unmistakable appearance of somebody who had spent several hours dealing with a genuine emergency and had not yet decided whether she was allowed to relax.

Her eyes widened when she saw him looking at her.

”Oh, thank goodness.”

She immediately leaned forward.

”Commander Bher? Can you hear me?”

Kade blinked.

He considered several possible answers.

The most appropriate involved a long sequence of profanity.

He settled for something less alarming.

”Unfortunately.”

Chief Fenwick stopped.

Then let out a breath that was almost a laugh.

”Good.”

Kade looked at her.

”That’s debatable.”

”You’re awake.”

”Apparently.”

She reached toward a small communications button beside the bed.

”Medical, the Commander’s conscious.”

A soft chime answered.

Then a woman’s voice came through the wall speaker.

”Acknowledged. I’ll be there shortly.”

Chief Fenwick turned back toward him.

”Don’t try to stand yet.”

Kade considered that instruction.

It was probably sensible.

He obeyed.

For once.

”How long?”

”Since the earthquake?”

He nodded.

”A few hours.”

Kade looked toward the window.

”Night already.”

”Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

The memories were still there.

Mizunokuni.

Wysteria.

The Final Wave.

Ayame.

Elias.

Everything.

It hadn’t been a dream.

That was almost the worst part.

The headache was gone, but the memories remained perfectly accessible.

He could remember standing inside a summoning chamber at twelve years old.

He could remember the weight of the Gauntlets around his arms.

He could remember the taste of ash in the air during the Final Wave.

And he could remember sitting in a school classroom in his current life, wondering why he occasionally dreamed about places that didn’t exist.

Kade opened his eyes again.

Chief Fenwick was watching him.

”How do you feel?”

He considered the question.

Physically, his head felt strangely normal.

His body was sore.

His throat was dry.

One shoulder hurt from striking the floor.

But the catastrophic pressure behind his eyes had disappeared.

Mentally?

That was another matter.

He had just remembered an entire lifetime ending in a violent sacrifice.

He was lying in a medical bed inside a game.

And he was fairly certain something had gone catastrophically wrong.

He looked at the chief.

”Like someone put my head through an industrial press.”

Her expression tightened.

”Is the pain still severe?”

”Not anymore.”

”Any dizziness?”

He moved his eyes carefully.

”No.”

”Nausea?”

”Not currently.”

”Can you remember what happened?”

Kade nearly laughed.

It would not have been a particularly cheerful laugh.

”Yes.”

Chief Fenwick looked relieved.

”Good.”

He stared at her for another moment.

Then asked:

”How’s everyone else?”

The relief vanished from her face.

Kade noticed immediately.

He knew that expression.

He had seen it on officers who had received casualty reports and were trying to decide how much to tell the people waiting for them.

His stomach tightened.

”Chief.”

She held up one hand.

”They’re alive.”

Kade exhaled.

A little.

”All of them?”

”Every patient we’ve checked at the station.”

”Conscious?”

”Some are waking. Others are still under observation.”

He nodded.

”Good.”

Chief Fenwick’s expression remained troubled.

He watched her.

”What?”

She hesitated.

”There’s something I need to explain.”

Kade looked at her.

Then toward the darkened window.

Then back.

”That sentence never ends well.”

She didn’t smile.

That was concerning.

A moment later, the infirmary door opened.

The station medic entered carrying a clipboard and a compact diagnostic kit.

Irena Holt looked as tired as Chief Fenwick.

She had a fresh ink stain on one sleeve and a medical instrument tucked into the pocket of her field jacket. Her hair had partially escaped its knot, and she wore the expression of somebody whose evening had been ruined by a problem that no textbook had thought to describe.

She stepped beside the bed.

”Commander Bher.”

Kade looked at her.

”Present.”

”How are you feeling?”

”Chief already asked.”

”Now I’m asking.”

He considered that.

”Popular question.”

Irena didn’t blink.

”Answer it.”

Kade smiled faintly.

”Headache’s gone. Shoulder hurts. Throat’s dry. Nothing else obvious.”

She nodded.

”Good. Any double vision?”

”No.”

”Difficulty breathing?”

”No.”

”Chest pain?”

”No.”

”Do you know where you are?”

Kade looked around.

”Horizon Atoll infirmary.”

”Good. Your name?”

”Kade Bher.”

”Age?”

”Eighteen.”

”Role?”

”Commander.”

”Do you remember the earthquake?”

”Yes.”

She made a note.

”Do you remember losing consciousness?”

”Very enthusiastically.”

Irena paused.

Chief Fenwick made a small noise behind her hand.

The medic gave Kade a flat look.

”I’d prefer a medically useful answer.”

Kade sighed.

”Headache started. Extremely severe. Vision went strange. Couldn’t move properly. Fell. Then nothing.”

Irena nodded.

”Better.”

”Glad I could help.”

She examined his eyes.

Checked his reflexes.

Measured his pulse.

Then inspected the shoulder he had complained about.

Kade allowed it.

He knew enough about injuries to recognize that being unconscious during an earthquake was a reasonable excuse for accepting medical attention.

He also knew that the alternative involved arguing with a medical professional who already looked ready to bite someone.

That seemed unnecessary.

Irena gently pressed the bruised area.

He winced.

”That hurt?”

”Yes.”

”How much?”

”Enough to inspire criticism.”

She raised an eyebrow.

”Of my examination?”

”Of the floor.”

Chief Fenwick laughed.

It escaped before she could stop herself.

Irena sighed.

”Your shoulder is bruised. I don’t see indications of a fracture, but we’ll continue observing it.”

”Lovely.”

”Don’t lift anything heavy tonight.”

Kade looked toward the ceiling.

”Tragic.”

”Commander.”

”Yes?”

”I’m serious.”

”So am I. There goes my plan to rearrange the furniture.”

She stared.

Then, despite herself, smiled.

”You’re going to be difficult.”

”People keep saying that.”

”I wonder why.”

”Medical mystery.”

Chief Fenwick laughed again.

For a brief moment, the infirmary almost felt ordinary.

Then Irena lowered her diagnostic instrument.

Her expression changed.

”Commander, there’s another matter.”

Kade looked toward her.

”Chief already tried that sentence. Didn’t like it then.”

The medic did not smile.

”Your loss of consciousness wasn’t an isolated incident.”

He nodded.

”Everyone in the mess hall.”

”Beyond the mess hall.”

Kade remained still.

”How far beyond?”

Irena glanced toward Chief Fenwick.

The chief answered.

”Every newly assigned player-associated personnel group we’ve been able to contact.”

Kade’s eyes narrowed slightly.

The phrasing was odd.

But it made sense from their perspective.

They did not know they were characters in a game.

They were describing a pattern in the personnel records.

He kept his voice even.

”Other bases?”

Chief Fenwick nodded.

”Regional Command is receiving similar reports from facilities across the Pacific. We’ve also heard that the incident extends well beyond our operational area.”

”How many?”

”Nobody has a confirmed total.”

Kade stared at her.

A long silence followed.

Then he asked:

”Did everyone experience the same headache?”

”As far as we know.”

”And pass out?”

”Yes.”

”And the rest of the station?”

”Uninjured by that particular effect. We had some minor earthquake injuries.”

Kade looked toward Irena.

She nodded.

”That’s correct.”

He leaned back against the pillow.

Very slowly.

”Oh.”

Chief Fenwick watched him.

”Commander?”

Kade stared at the ceiling.

His expression remained neutral.

Inside his head, however, the situation had just become significantly worse.

All the players.

Across multiple bases.

Possibly the whole world.

The earthquake.

The headaches.

The unconsciousness.

The impossible memories.

He turned toward the window.

The dark glass reflected his face.

His real face.

Eighteen years old.

Brown hair.

Steel-blue eyes.

The same physical body he had possessed before entering the game.

That wasn’t unusual for him.

He had designed his Commander to look much like himself.

But the Keelborn...

He remembered the faces from the mess hall.

The tremendous height Riko had given her Yamato-class character.

The pale-lavender hair Yuna had chosen.

Hana’s bright green eyes.

Aster’s carefully crafted appearance from the promotional trailer.

He looked back at the medic.

”Chief said something changed.”

Irena hesitated.

”Yes.”

”What?”

She exchanged another glance with Fenwick.

Then answered:

”The physical appearances of many Keelborn have altered.”

Kade felt a cold sensation settle behind his ribs.

”Altered how?”

”We’re still documenting it.”

”Are they injured?”

”Not by the changes themselves, as far as we can determine.”

”Do they remember who they are?”

”The ones who’ve awakened appear to.”

He nodded.

Then looked toward the chief.

”Can I see them?”

”After we finish your examination,” Irena answered.

Kade considered arguing.

Then looked at her expression.

He decided against it.

”Fine.”

The medic nodded.

”Thank you.”

He looked toward the bedside table.

There was a glass of water.

A folded cloth.

A small personal-effects tray.

And a compact communications handset.

No headset.

No familiar physical controller.

No equipment suggesting that he could simply remove himself from the environment.

Of course there wasn’t.

He was inside the game.

His avatar was lying in the infirmary.

The headset would be somewhere in the physical room outside.

That was how immersion systems worked.

All he needed to do was open the system menu.

He raised one hand.

Made the familiar gesture.

Nothing happened.

He blinked.

Tried again.

Nothing.

He focused on the interface command.

Waited.

The room remained unchanged.

The fan continued humming.

Irena wrote something on her clipboard.

Chief Fenwick adjusted her chair.

Kade tried another gesture.

Still nothing.

He stared at his hand.

Then slowly lowered it.

No menu.

No logout option.

No interface response.

He did not say anything.

He simply looked toward the window.

And for the first time since waking, a single very clear thought rose above the confusion.

Absolutely the fuck not.

Kade had spent sixteen years in a world where a numerical System governed much of daily life.

He remembered status displays.

Inventory functions.

Equipment classifications.

Skill descriptions.

Weapon transformations.

He remembered the Gauntlets responding to commands that would have sounded ridiculous to anyone unfamiliar with Wysteria.

Those things had belonged to the metaphysical laws of that world.

They had not been computer software.

The distinction mattered.

He understood it now with uncomfortable clarity.

Wysteria had been real.

The people who died there had been real.

The kingdoms that summoned children had been real.

The Final Wave had been real.

And the world he had entered that morning had been a video game.

At least, it had been.

He remembered putting on the headset.

He remembered his bedroom.

The warm tea beside his desk.

His phone.

The classmate who had asked whether he wanted to go out.

The ridiculous message about an international naval conference.

He remembered the character-selection interface.

The Commander role.

The unavailable naval bases.

The map of the Pacific.

Horizon Atoll.

He remembered every step.

There was no confusion about having been summoned into Wysteria a second time.

This was different.

He had willingly entered a VRMMORPG.

Something had happened.

And now...

Kade looked toward Chief Fenwick.

The chief was speaking quietly with Irena.

She was not waiting for him to select a dialogue option.

She wasn’t repeating the same expression every few seconds.

She wasn’t standing in a prearranged location to offer a station-management quest.

Those observations alone proved very little. Modern games could simulate convincing interactions, and the VRMMORPG had already demonstrated exceptional immersion.

But there was something else.

Kade had noticed it before without knowing what to call it.

The chief’s eyes.

She had been frightened when he woke.

Genuinely frightened.

Relieved enough to laugh when he made a joke.

Then worried again when the medic began discussing the other unconscious personnel.

Kade knew that kind of fear.

He had seen it often enough.

There were tiny signs.

The way she kept glancing toward the infirmary door.

The way she held her hands together when she wasn’t using them.

The tension in her jaw whenever Irena mentioned another unexplained symptom.

The fatigue that had settled into her posture.

And the very ordinary habit of checking the bedside water glass whenever he moved.

She was worried about him.

Not because he was a player who had completed a requirement.

Not because his health bar had fallen below some threshold.

Because he was a person lying in a medical bed, and she had spent several hours wondering whether he would wake up.

Kade watched her.

Then asked:

”Chief?”

She turned.

”Yes, Commander?”

”How long have you been stationed here?”

Fenwick blinked.

The question clearly surprised her.

”At Horizon?”

”Yes.”

”Eleven years.”

He nodded.

”Long time.”

”Longer than I intended.”

She smiled faintly.

”Why?”

”Curious.”

The chief leaned back.

”I was transferred here after serving at a much larger installation. I expected to stay two years, possibly three.”

”What happened?”

”Three became five. Five became eight. Then I was the only person left who knew where half the old procurement records had gone.”

Kade smiled.

”Trapped by paperwork.”

”Precisely.”

”Terrible fate.”

”You have no idea.”

He studied her.

”Ever think of leaving?”

Chief Fenwick looked toward the dark window.

For a moment, her expression became distant.

”Sometimes.”

”Why stay?”

She took her time answering.

”My husband used to say that if nobody stayed when a place became difficult, there wouldn’t be anywhere left worth returning to.”

Kade was quiet.

The chief looked down at her hands.

”He died six years ago.”

”I’m sorry.”

She nodded.

”Thank you.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then she continued.

”He was a harbor engineer. Stubborn man. Thought every broken machine was personally insulting him.”

Kade smiled faintly.

”Sounds familiar.”

”He would have liked your repair girl.”

”Hana?”

”Yes.”

”Probably.”

Chief Fenwick looked toward the window.

”I stayed because the station needed people who knew it. And because I didn’t much like the idea of everything he worked on being abandoned.”

Kade nodded slowly.

She looked back at him.

”Besides, somebody has to keep the coffee machine working.”

He laughed softly.

”Vital duty.”

”Extremely.”

She smiled.

Kade looked away.

He had asked a question.

She had given an answer.

Nothing about it felt like a scripted backstory.

He could have asked another question.

About her husband.

Her years at the station.

The places she had served.

The people she had lost.

He suspected she could have spent hours answering, and every answer would lead to another memory, another small ordinary detail, another part of a life that had existed long before he entered the game.

A life.

A real one.

Kade closed his eyes for a moment.

Then opened them again.

Oh, you’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

It wasn’t enough that the entire player population might be trapped.

It wasn’t enough that the game had apparently decided to treat his nervous system like an enemy combatant.

It wasn’t enough that he had just recovered twenty-eight years of memories, including an extremely unpleasant death.

No.

Apparently the world itself had become real.

And the woman sitting beside his bed was no longer an NPC.

She was Mara Fenwick.

A tired chief petty officer with a dead husband, eleven years of service at a neglected naval station, and a coffee machine she considered a matter of personal pride.

Kade looked at her.

She raised an eyebrow.

”Something wrong?”

He considered his answer.

Then sighed.

”Chief.”

”Yes?”

”I think I’ve had an unusually bad day.”

She looked toward the medical equipment.

Then at him.

”Yes, Commander.”

Her expression softened.

”I think you have.”

For once, Kade didn’t have a sarcastic answer ready.

He simply nodded.

And allowed the silence to remain.

Irena eventually declared that Kade could sit upright without immediate concern.

She did not declare him healthy.

That, apparently, required more observation.

Kade found the distinction irritating.

He also found it reasonable.

Which made arguing about it difficult.

He sat on the edge of the bed while Irena checked his blood pressure for a second time. The infirmary’s overhead lights were dimmer now, and the night beyond the windows had deepened into a darkness broken only by the station’s exterior lamps.

His shoulder ached.

His head did not.

He regarded that as a suspicious improvement.

”Any dizziness?”

”No.”

”Nausea?”

”No.”

”Difficulty remembering things?”

Kade looked at her.

He had to make a considerable effort not to laugh.

”No.”

”Good.”

If only you knew.

Irena examined her notes.

”Your symptoms are resolving more rapidly than some of the other patients.”

”That’s encouraging.”

”Yes. It is.”

He glanced toward the door.

”Can I check on the others now?”

The medic hesitated.

Then nodded.

”Briefly. You are not cleared for normal duties, and I want you to report immediately if the headache returns.”

”Understood.”

”And you are not to perform strenuous activity.”

”Tragic.”

”Commander.”

He looked at her.

”I know.”

She considered him.

Then sighed.

”Good.”

Kade stood carefully.

The floor felt cold beneath his feet.

Not merely cool.

Cold in the ordinary physical sense that a person experienced when bare skin met tile.

He shifted his weight.

There was resistance.

Friction.

The ache in his shoulder changed with the movement.

He could feel his pulse in his fingertips.

He could smell antiseptic, fabric, and the faint salt carried through the infirmary’s ventilation system.

Everything was immediate.

Unfiltered.

Terribly precise.

Kade looked down at his hand.

He flexed his fingers.

The movement was familiar.

His body was his own.

The eighteen-year-old body he had occupied before entering the VRMMORPG.

Not the body of the twenty-eight-year-old Gauntlet Hero.

Not the broad, battle-conditioned form that had spent sixteen years surviving Wysteria.

His current hands were smaller.

His shoulders narrower.

His skin lacked the old scars.

The Gauntlets were gone.

They had been destroyed during the Final Wave.

Nothing had restored them.

Nothing had transferred them into his present body.

He could remember how to fight.

He could remember how to command.

He could remember an extraordinary amount of pain.

But memory and ability were not the same thing.

He had neither the strength nor the supernatural support that had once accompanied the Holy Weapon.

Kade turned his hand over.

For a moment, he remembered the feeling of sacred metal wrapping around his fingers.

The power beneath it.

The terrible final release.

Then he looked toward Irena.

She was watching him with professional concern.

”Commander?”

He lowered his hand.

”Just checking.”

”Checking what?”

”Whether the floor still works.”

She blinked.

He gestured downward.

”Good news. It does.”

Chief Fenwick made a noise suspiciously close to a snort.

Irena closed her eyes.

”Please don’t make me regret allowing you to stand.”

”No promises.”

”Commander.”

”Fine.”

He followed her toward the infirmary’s main ward.

Chief Fenwick came with them.

The corridor was busy.

Medical personnel moved between rooms carrying diagnostic equipment and supplies. Several station sailors waited on benches, some with minor earthquake injuries, while an SIA Doll in a medical support uniform transported a trolley of clean blankets toward the rear treatment area.

Nobody was standing idle.

Nobody was performing the same movement over and over because a program required it.

A woman near the nurses’ station was quietly arguing with a colleague about whether she needed to take a break.

Another member of the medical staff was drinking cold coffee with the miserable determination of someone who had not slept enough.

A young sailor sat beside a wall with his arm in a sling, attempting to persuade a nurse that he could return to duty.

The nurse was unimpressed.

Kade watched them.

Every movement seemed ordinary.

Every conversation carried the weary texture of people dealing with an unexpected emergency.

This wasn’t a decorative medical facility.

It was a working infirmary.

And those were people.

Actual people.

The realization made something tighten beneath his ribs.

He looked away before anyone noticed.

They reached a set of double doors.

Irena pushed them open.

The ward beyond was full.

Temporary beds occupied the spaces between the permanent ones, and several additional stretchers had been brought in from nearby emergency storage.

A few patients remained unconscious.

Others had begun waking.

One was crying.

Another was arguing with a medical orderly.

Someone farther back shouted that she wanted to speak to a game moderator.

There was a long, uncomfortable silence.

Then the orderly answered:

”I’m sorry, miss. I don’t know what that is.”

Kade closed his eyes for half a second.

Oh, that’s not good.

He opened them again.

The first person he recognized was Hana.

Not because of her appearance.

That had changed.

The copper-colored hair was gone.

So were the bright green eyes she had chosen for her Akashi-class avatar.

The young woman sitting on the medical bed looked like somebody Kade might have passed in an ordinary university corridor. Her natural hair was dark, tied back loosely, and her face was smaller and less exaggerated than the character model he remembered.

The practical expression, however, remained unmistakable.

She was sitting upright with a blanket around her shoulders, examining her own hands.

A small Ship Pendant hung against her shirt.

She looked toward Kade.

Then blinked.

”...Commander?”

He stopped beside the bed.

”Hana?”

She stared.

Then nodded.

”Yes.”

Her voice was different from the one the avatar had used.

Not entirely.

The cadence was the same.

The dry, practical manner remained.

But the actual sound of her voice was her own.

She looked down at herself again.

Then back at him.

”Oh.”

Kade raised an eyebrow.

”Oh?”

Hana looked around.

Then whispered:

”I think something’s very wrong.”

Kade considered that.

”Strong possibility.”

She stared at him.

Then, despite everything, laughed once.

It was a small, incredulous laugh.

”You’re still doing that?”

”Apparently.”

”How?”

”Natural talent.”

She shook her head.

Then looked at her hands again.

”I look like me.”

Kade remained quiet.

Hana looked toward the nearby window.

”Not my character.”

”No.”

”My actual face.”

”Seems that way.”

She swallowed.

”How?”

Kade looked toward the room.

Then back at her.

”I don’t know.”

It was a truthful answer.

A very frustrating one.

Hana touched the pendant at her chest.

”This was part of my avatar.”

Kade nodded.

”Yes.”

She held it between two fingers.

”It hasn’t disappeared.”

”No.”

She looked toward him.

”Do you think the Repair Keelborn abilities still work?”

Kade considered the question.

”Possibly.”

”That’s not reassuring.”

”It’s also not a promise I’m qualified to make.”

Hana let out a breath.

Then nodded slowly.

”Fair.”

Her eyes moved toward Chief Fenwick.

The chief stood a short distance away, speaking with Irena.

Hana watched her.

Then leaned closer to Kade.

”Commander.”

”Hm?”

”She doesn’t know.”

He followed her gaze.

”Know what?”

Hana stared at him.

Then lowered her voice.

”That she’s an NPC.”

The words sounded absurdly small inside the busy medical ward.

Kade watched the chief.

Mara Fenwick was discussing the placement of additional beds with a nurse.

She looked worried.

Tired.

Irritated about something in the supply report.

Entirely human.

He turned back toward Hana.

”Would you believe someone who walked up to you and said your whole life was part of a computer game?”

Hana opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Her expression changed.

”No.”

”Neither would I.”

She looked down.

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

”What the hell happened?”

Kade considered the question.

His own memories pressed against the back of his mind.

A summoning circle.

A sacred weapon.

A foreign world.

Sixteen years.

Death.

He had seen impossible things before.

He knew that being familiar with the impossible did not make it less unpleasant.

He looked at Hana.

”No idea.”

She nodded.

Then glanced at him again.

”You’re taking this remarkably well.”

Kade smiled faintly.

”Am I?”

”You haven’t started screaming.”

”Would it help?”

”Probably not.”

”Then I’m saving my voice.”

Hana laughed weakly.

For a moment, she looked as though she might cry.

Then she pressed both hands against her face.

Kade didn’t interrupt.

He waited.

Eventually, she lowered her hands.

”Sorry.”

”For what?”

”I don’t know.”

”Then we’re making excellent progress.”

She gave him a tired smile.

Kade nodded toward the pendant.

”Don’t lose that.”

Hana looked down.

”Why?”

He considered how much the game’s lore might still matter.

Then answered carefully.

”Ship Pendants were important before all this. I’d rather not discover that they’ve become less important in the worst possible way.”

Hana’s face tightened.

She closed her fingers around the pendant.

”Right.”

Kade nodded.

Then glanced toward the other beds.

”Where are Riko and Yuna?”

Hana pointed.

”Over there.”

He followed her gesture.

And discovered that Riko Minase was experiencing a personal crisis of considerable magnitude.

 ”THIS IS BULLSHIT!”

The shout came from a bed near the far wall.

Kade looked over.

A nineteen-year-old woman sat upright beneath a blanket, glaring at her reflection in the darkened window.

Her dark hair was shorter than it had been in the game.

Her face was entirely different.

Her height was considerably less impressive.

And she appeared absolutely furious.

Yuna sat beside her, now wearing her natural dark hair and familiar glasses.

She was trying very hard not to laugh.

”Riko.”

”No!”

”Please calm down.”

”I SPENT FORTY MINUTES MAKING THAT CHARACTER!”

Kade closed his eyes.

Of course.

Of all the things that could have happened, this was apparently where Riko had decided to begin.

Yuna attempted to reason with her.

”You still have your Ship Pendant.”

”THAT’S NOT THE POINT!”

”Your class hasn’t changed.”

”YUNA!”

”Yes?”

”I WAS TALL!”

Kade pressed one hand against his mouth.

It was a tactical mistake.

Riko noticed him.

Her eyes narrowed.

”Commander.”

He lowered his hand.

”Riko.”

”Don’t.”

”Wasn’t going to.”

”You’re smiling.”

”Medical condition.”

Yuna began laughing.

Riko pointed toward Kade.

”THIS IS NOT FUNNY!”

He considered the accusation.

Then looked at her.

”I’ve been short all my life. I sympathize deeply.”

She stared.

There was a pause.

Then Yuna laughed so hard she had to take off her glasses.

Riko looked betrayed.

”YUNA!”

”I’m sorry!”

”You’re not!”

”No!”

Kade smiled.

Riko crossed her arms.
