Horizon Atoll: Hearts of Steel

The Box Beside the Bed

Almost two months had passed since the day Camille Duret had staggered into a coastal defense harbor carrying five Ship Pendants and almost nothing else that remained of her friends. Her name had traveled across the Pacific during the first morning after Hour Zero, when the recording of six inexperienced destroyer girls meeting a Blackwake horror played on news broadcasts and mess-hall televisions. A month later, while other survivors were still discussing that recording, she had remained in the same coastal recuperation facility. And now the Crisis had reached its second month and gone on toward its third, with no sign that the world intended to return to what it had been.

She had spent nearly the whole intervening period at that base. Not a brief convalescence. Not a handful of days, nor simply a few troublesome weeks. The hospital room, maintenance piers, medical examinations, restricted rigging trials, and long stretches of waiting had occupied almost two months of her life. The people who watched her arrive had come to recognize her footsteps in the corridor, the meal she usually left untouched when her sleep had been bad, and the reinforced case she never willingly left unattended.

Camille Duret had developed a habit of counting to five.

She did it when she woke.

She did it before eating.

She did it whenever someone knocked on the door of her recovery room, whenever a voice sounded unexpectedly in the corridor, and whenever the silence lasted long enough for her mind to begin supplying memories she would rather not revisit.

Most often, she did it at night.

Not aloud.

Not usually.

Her lips sometimes moved, but the names rarely escaped them.

Instead, she sat beside her narrow bed in the coastal defense facility’s recuperation wing, opened the small reinforced case resting on the table, and counted the objects inside.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

The case was the same one she’d been using since the day she reached the harbor.

Its original latches had been damaged. One hinge had been replaced, the lining repaired, and the compartment separators adjusted to prevent the contents from striking one another when the case moved.

The work had been performed by a patient maintenance technician who hadn’t asked too many questions.

Camille had been grateful for that.

The five objects lay in individual protective recesses, each secured beneath a soft retaining strap. None was particularly large. Without knowing what they were, an observer might have mistaken them for elaborate keepsakes or unusual pieces of jewelry.

Camille knew better.

She had carried them out of the sea.

She remembered their weight.

Not the physical weight, which was slight enough that she could hold all five in one hand.

She remembered everything else.

The cold water.

The terrible pressure in her chest as she fought to reach the surface.

The sound of shells striking the ocean around her.

The blue eye of the Blackwake destroyer turning toward her through smoke and spray.

The shattered remains of her friends’ equipment.

And the moment she realized that there would be no sixth Pendant to recover, because she was the one who had survived.

Camille touched the first retaining strap.

Beneath it lay Nika’s Pendant.

She remembered Nika complaining about how difficult it was to steer her Gnevny-class rigging properly.

The younger destroyer had possessed an almost supernatural talent for drifting toward whichever member of the formation was least interested in being collided with. On their final voyage, Vera had spent an extraordinary amount of time telling her to maintain a straight course.

Nika had protested every time.

And then, a few minutes later, she would do it again.

Camille’s mouth moved.

A small, involuntary smile appeared.

“You were getting better.”

Her voice was barely audible.

She touched the second strap.

Vera.

Another Gnevny-class destroyer.

Vera had always sounded exasperated when Nika made mistakes, but she’d been the first to move toward her when the Blackwake attacked.

Camille remembered that too.

Vera shouting.

Vera reaching.

Vera refusing to abandon someone who could no longer keep herself above the water.

The smile disappeared.

Camille moved to the third compartment.

Lillian.

The Gearing-class girl who had tried, with diminishing success, to keep six frightened novice Keelborn operating like an actual formation. She’d checked their route, reminded them to maintain separation, and repeatedly attempted to turn Nika’s enthusiasm into something resembling disciplined navigation.

Lillian had also possessed an unfortunate habit of pretending she wasn’t amused by Klara’s jokes.

Camille remembered the way she’d sometimes look away when she began smiling.

She touched the fourth strap.

Frieda.

A Type 1936A destroyer.

Confident enough to tease the others, serious enough to understand when the teasing needed to stop. Frieda had taken responsibility for helping Klara learn her equipment, even while struggling with parts of her own.

Camille remembered her laughing in front of the maintenance building before their departure.

Then she moved to the fifth compartment.

Klara.

Another Type 1936A girl.

Her short black braid had come loose during that last voyage, and she’d spent several minutes complaining that the wind was doing something personally offensive to her hair.

Camille remembered telling her to use a better tie.

Klara had answered that Camille should worry about her enormous battle-axe instead.

They’d all laughed.

It hadn’t been an especially clever joke.

Camille would have given almost anything to hear it again.

She lowered her hand.

Five Pendants.

Five friends.

Five lives waiting for a kind of help that had not yet become possible.

The preliminary examinations performed after Camille’s rescue had established that the Pendants remained intact and retained their associated soul signatures.

That was important.

It meant hope was reasonable.

Not guaranteed.

Not immediate.

But reasonable.

Unfortunately, hope did not provide a functioning restoration facility.

It did not produce the enormous quantities of suitable material required to rebuild five Keelborn bodies and their associated ship equipment.

It did not repair the specialized systems that had been damaged or lost during years of Blackwake attacks.

And it did not answer the quiet question Camille asked herself whenever she looked at the case.

How long?

How long before the girls could come back?

How long before she could hear their voices again?

How long before she could apologize for surviving?

Nobody knew.

Camille closed the case.

The latches clicked into place.

She checked the first.

Then the second.

Then checked them both again.

Only after she was satisfied did she allow herself to lean back against the chair.

The recovery room was quiet.

Late-afternoon sunlight entered through the window, falling across the pale walls and the folded blanket at the foot of her bed. A small ventilation fan rattled gently above the door. The distant sounds of naval activity drifted in from the harbor: a crane moving, a truck changing gears, a warning bell from the repair slip.

Ordinary sounds.

Safe sounds, supposedly.

Camille looked toward the door.

Its lock had been replaced three days earlier.

She had requested that herself.

A brass key rested on the chain around her wrist.

She never let it out of reach.

Not anymore.

The coastal defense facility had treated her kindly at first.

It had been the only place she’d known since the Blackwake killed the others in the first hours of the Crisis. Over nearly two months, kindness had acquired a history there: nurses learning how to wake her without making her panic, technicians spending entire shifts making the ruined Mogador equipment safe to handle, and a harbor staff that understood why she kept looking toward the sea even after the medical department told her she was no longer in danger of drowning.

Camille remembered that.

She refused to forget it, even now.

The sailors who had pulled her from the landing platform had not asked for reward rights. They’d asked whether she was breathing.

The medical personnel who rushed her into treatment had not tried to confiscate her friends’ Pendants. They’d helped secure the compartment while she was too injured to manage it herself.

The technician who inspected the objects had recorded their condition carefully, confirmed the five associated signatures, and arranged for the reinforced case to be repaired.

A nurse had brought her food when she couldn’t make herself leave the room.

A young radio operator had sat beside her on one particularly terrible evening and talked about absolutely nothing important until Camille finally stopped shaking.

She remembered all of it.

The people at the facility were not collectively cruel.

Many had been decent.

Some had been extraordinarily decent.

That was partly why the change had been so difficult to understand.

For much of the first month, there had been no real question about where the Pendants belonged. They were recorded as the identities of five fallen girls, and Camille was the survivor who had recovered them. The medical staff’s greatest concerns were her injuries, her lack of sleep, and whether her damaged rigging could eventually support safe movement again. A few employees had been curious about the Pendants, but curiosity was not yet the same thing as covetousness.

During the second month, the atmosphere had begun to change. Rumors of former-player raids arrived with the shipping reports. Stories circulated about Keelborn being taken or counted as rewards. New committees began requesting records that had already been completed. Familiar nurses still greeted Camille kindly, yet increasingly unfamiliar people came down the corridor with folders, questions, and explanations of why the little box ought to be somewhere else. The last several days had been the worst. By then the people who called the Pendants valuable seemed considerably more interested in their supposed future claimants than in the five names they represented.

It hadn’t happened all at once.

There had been no sudden announcement that Camille was no longer welcome.

No commanding officer had marched into her room and demanded the Pendants at gunpoint.

Instead, the questions had begun.

At first, they were almost reasonable.

Had the objects been examined?

Were they in stable condition?

Did Camille have documentation proving their identities?

Would she consider allowing the medical department to place them in a more secure storage system?

She had answered politely.

The Pendants had been examined.

Their condition had been recorded.

She possessed the documentation.

And she preferred to keep them with her.

The questions continued.

Would it not be safer to move them to a central repository?

Was she certain the case provided sufficient protection?

Would she object to photographs being included in a regional restoration inventory?

Did she know that some of the girls’ classes were considered unusually desirable by former-player organizations?

That last question had bothered her.

She had asked why desirability mattered.

The man asking it had smiled and said it was only a technical classification.

Camille hadn’t liked his smile.

She liked it even less when another former player asked whether the Pendants were registered under her account.

She’d stared at him.

Then asked what he meant.

He’d seemed genuinely surprised by the question.

“Well, you recovered them, didn’t you?”

“Yes.”

“So they’re yours.”

Camille remembered looking down at the case in her hands.

For several seconds, she hadn’t answered.

Then she’d spoken carefully.

“They’re my friends.”

The man had smiled.

“Right. Sure.”

She had left before he could ask anything else.

The next day, someone had requested a complete itemized inventory.

Two days later, somebody else had asked whether the objects could be transferred for centralized evaluation.

Then the news from Halcyon Roads had arrived.

And the questions became much worse.

The Difference Between a Survivor and an Inventory

The man who visited Camille’s room on the evening before she decided to leave was not a doctor.

That was the first thing she noticed.

He wore an Admiralty Union administrative jacket with a former-player service badge, but the garment had not been fitted particularly well. The collar sat crookedly against his neck, and a small metal identification plate hung from one breast pocket.

His name was Martin Rusk.

He worked with regional logistics coordination.

At least, that was how he’d introduced himself.

Camille had seen him twice before.

Both times, he’d asked questions about the Pendants.

Now he stood outside her recovery-room door holding a clipboard and wearing an expression that suggested he expected the conversation to be pleasantly routine.

Camille did not invite him inside.

“Can I help you?”

Rusk smiled.

“Miss Duret. Good afternoon.”

She remained in the doorway.

“It’s evening.”

He blinked.

Then smiled again.

“Of course. Apologies.”

Camille waited.

The man glanced toward the room behind her.

“May I come in?”

“No.”

His smile faltered.

For a moment, he seemed uncertain how to respond.

Then he looked toward the clipboard.

“I just need to clarify something concerning the recovered items.”

Camille felt her stomach tighten.

“What items?”

Rusk glanced at her.

“The Pendants.”

She did not move.

“Which Pendants?”

He sighed.

“Miss Duret, let’s not make this difficult.”

Camille’s fingers tightened against the door.

“Which Pendants?”

For several seconds, Rusk stared at her.

Then he read from the clipboard.

“Five Keelborn Ship Pendants recovered after the coastal Blackwake engagement. Two Soviet destroyer units, one American destroyer unit, two German destroyer units.”

Camille looked at him.

He paused.

Then raised an eyebrow.

“Is that accurate?”

She was very quiet.

At last, she answered:

“They have names.”

Rusk’s expression changed.

“Of course they do.”

“Then use them.”

He sighed.

For a moment, he appeared to be considering whether this was worth arguing about.

Then he glanced at the paperwork again.

“Fine. Nika, Vera, Lillian, Frieda, and Klara.”

Camille kept looking at him.

He continued.

“Now, as I was saying, regional command is reviewing recovered high-value assets.”

Her fingers tightened against the door.

“No.”

Rusk blinked.

“I haven’t asked anything yet.”

“You called them assets.”

“That’s the standard terminology.”

“They’re people.”

The man smiled with visible effort.

“Miss Duret. The Pendants are physical items. Whatever they may contain—”

“People.”

A pause.

Camille’s voice was low.

“They contain people.”

Rusk stared.

Then he sighed.

“Look. Nobody is disputing your emotional connection to the units.”

For one terrible moment, Camille couldn’t speak.

Her emotional connection.

As though she’d found five interesting objects and become unreasonably attached to them.

As though she hadn’t watched Nika die in front of her.

As though she hadn’t dragged Vera’s body from the water.

As though Lillian, Frieda, and Klara had never existed outside the little labels beneath their names.

She looked toward the clipboard.

“What do you want?”

Rusk seemed relieved to have reached the practical portion of the conversation.

“We need you to sign a temporary transfer authorization.”

Camille held out her hand.

“Let me see.”

He gave her the paper.

She read.

Carefully.

The first paragraph concerned the security of recovered Keelborn artifacts.

The second concerned transfer into a regional holding arrangement pending restoration.

The third contained the phrase claimant verification.

Camille stopped.

She read it again.

Then looked toward Rusk.

“What’s this?”

He glanced at the line.

“Routine administrative language.”

“Claimant verification.”

“Yes.”

“Who is the claimant?”

Rusk hesitated.

Then smiled.

“That would be determined through the registry.”

Camille stared at him.

“The registry.”

“Correct.”

“Which registry?”

“The current player asset registry.”

The room seemed to tilt.

For a moment, Camille couldn’t quite understand what she’d heard.

Then she asked, very quietly:

“Player?”

Rusk nodded.

“It’s a provisional system. We’re trying to establish consistent ownership records for recovered units until the larger campaign framework is clarified.”

Camille looked at him.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she slowly lowered the paper.

“You think this is still a game.”

Rusk looked offended.

“I think there’s still a possibility we’re experiencing a special event.”

Camille stared.

“An event.”

“Yes.”

She glanced toward the reinforced case inside her room.

Then back.

“Five of my friends died.”

The man shifted uncomfortably.

“I understand the experience was very convincing.”

Camille’s expression went blank.

For a moment, she simply stared at him.

Then she asked:

“Convincing?”

Rusk looked toward the corridor.

His expression became defensive.

“Miss Duret, I’m not saying you didn’t suffer. I’m saying we don’t fully understand the circumstances of this simulation.”

Camille took a slow breath.

She remembered the smell of blood.

The weight of ruined rigging.

The way Vera’s fingers had slipped from Nika’s shoulder.

The sound of Frieda calling for help.

The silence afterward.

She looked at the paper again.

Claimant verification.

Then she held it out to him.

“No.”

Rusk blinked.

“What?”

“No.”

“You haven’t heard the benefits.”

Camille stared.

He continued.

“Central storage would offer stronger security, and once restoration facilities become available, recognized claimants could receive priority processing.”

Her mouth became dry.

“Claimants.”

“Yes.”

“For my friends.”

Rusk nodded, apparently unable to hear the danger in his own words.

“Exactly.”

Camille looked into his face.

Then slowly shook her head.

“You need to leave.”

His expression tightened.

“Miss Duret—”

“Now.”

“Regional command has an interest in—”

She took one step forward.

Her injury protested immediately.

Pain flashed through her right side.

She ignored it.

Rusk stopped speaking.

Camille’s voice remained quiet.

“Get away from my room.”

For several seconds, the man stared.

Then he gathered his paperwork.

His expression had hardened.

“Very well.”

He turned toward the corridor.

Then paused.

“Just so you understand, this matter won’t disappear because you refuse to cooperate.”

Camille said nothing.

Rusk continued.

“There may be questions about whether you should retain personal custody of such valuable property.”

Something cold settled in Camille’s chest.

The man walked away.

She watched until he turned the corner.

Then she stepped backward into her room.

Closed the door.

Locked it.

And remained standing with one hand against the wood.

For a long time, she couldn’t move.

Eventually, she crossed to the table.

Opened the case.

Counted.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Then she closed it.

And began packing.

The Permission Nobody Wanted to Give

Camille had begun considering a transfer earlier in the second month of her recuperation, when the polite questions first started sounding like claims. She had spent several more days trying to convince herself that the situation would improve. The first formal transfer request had finally been filed almost a week earlier.

The form itself was unremarkable.

An Admiralty Union personnel movement request, amended after Hour Zero to accommodate former-player Keelborn whose original assignments no longer matched their circumstances.

There were spaces for current location, proposed destination, reason for reassignment, medical status, and the authority approving the transfer.

Camille had filled them in carefully.

Under reason, she’d written:

Request for continued recuperation at an installation with suitable Keelborn repair and medical support, outside the current regional command environment.

She had not written that she was afraid of the people asking to see her friends’ Pendants.

At the time, she’d hoped that wouldn’t be necessary.

Her proposed destination was Horizon Atoll.

She had never visited it.

She knew the station was underfunded, isolated, and still recovering from its own recent fighting. The facilities were reportedly old, the maintenance requirements extensive, and the available restoration infrastructure incomplete.

Under ordinary circumstances, it might have seemed a strange place to seek refuge.

But she’d also heard things about its Commander.

Not a great many things.

The Pacific was enormous, and information traveled poorly when half the radio network needed repairs.

Still, stories circulated.

A young former-player Commander who had ordered a dangerous salvage expedition because his base needed materials.

A station that had recovered both Keelborn and Sensha Pendants and refused to treat their previous owners as interchangeable equipment.

An Akashi-class repair girl who was examining the possibility of restoring a ruined naval recovery facility rather than declaring it operational and hoping nobody checked.

A damaged conventional battleship whose crew had been given time to mourn their dead.

And, more recently, a confrontation with an unauthorized submarine after its captain tried to seize an Illustrious-class carrier’s Pendant.

That last report had reached the coastal defense facility only a short time before Rusk’s visit.

Camille had read it twice.

The details were incomplete, and the formal investigation was still underway. The report did not claim that every person aboard the submarine had been acting with the same intentions. It did, however, confirm that an attempted Pendant theft had occurred and that the attacker had been arrested.

Not promoted.

Not congratulated for acquiring a rare item.

Arrested.

Camille had sat staring at that distinction for a very long time.

She did not know Kade Bher.

She had never heard his voice.

She knew nothing about his private life, his habits, or whether he was as competent as the reports sometimes suggested.

But she knew one thing.

At Horizon, someone had reached for a Keelborn’s Pendant without consent.

And the station had treated it as an assault.

Camille wanted to go there.

Desperately.

Unfortunately, her first transfer request had disappeared into administrative review.

The second had been returned with a request for a more complete medical assessment.

The third had been delayed pending clarification of regional custody regulations.

Camille had begun to suspect that the paperwork was no longer about her health.

Rusk’s visit confirmed it.

Now, seated at her desk in the recovery room, she took out the transfer request again.

The paper was slightly creased.

Its original approval section remained blank.

She looked toward the reinforced case.

Then toward the window.

Beyond it lay the harbor, where her Mogador-class rigging had been undergoing repairs for almost two months. The first part of that time had been spent stabilizing battle damage and making the equipment safe to inspect. Only later had the technicians been able to undertake the slow, limited work of returning portions of it to service.

The machinery was no longer in the terrible condition it had been when she arrived.

The worst structural damage had been stabilized. The propulsion systems had undergone repairs and limited functional testing, and damaged fittings had been replaced wherever appropriate parts could be found.

But the restoration was incomplete.

Several armor sections remained under temporary arrangements. One gun position was still unavailable. Part of the auxiliary electrical network had been isolated because replacement components hadn’t arrived.

Her famous battle-axe was gone.

She remembered losing it beneath the Blackwake destroyer’s jaw.

For a while, she’d asked whether anybody might recover it.

Eventually, she’d stopped.

The axe had helped save the Pendants.

It had bought her enough time to reach the others.

That was enough.

Now the empty mechanical retention point on her equipment served as another reminder of the battle.

Camille looked at the transfer form.

Then took a pen.

Beneath the original reason, she added a supplementary statement.

Personal safety concerns related to repeated attempts to transfer custody of recovered Ship Pendants without the consent of the survivor or the identities represented by those Pendants being appropriately considered.

She stopped.

Read the sentence.

Then added:

I no longer feel safe remaining at this facility.

For several seconds, she stared at those words.

They looked embarrassingly simple.

After everything that had happened, her fear occupied one sentence.

Camille signed her name.

Then folded the paper.

She needed somebody who would actually read it.

Lieutenant Harrow was halfway through completing an evening medical report when Camille appeared outside her office.

The medical officer looked up.

For a moment, her expression brightened.

“Camille.”

Then she noticed the bag.

And the case.

And the transfer papers held tightly in the girl’s hand.

Her smile disappeared.

“What’s happened?”

Camille stood in the doorway.

For several seconds, she tried to answer.

Nothing came out.

Harrow rose immediately.

“Come in.”

Camille obeyed.

The medical officer closed the door and indicated the chair beside her desk.

Camille sat.

The reinforced case rested across her lap.

Harrow noticed the way she held it.

Both arms wrapped around it.

As though someone might take it if she loosened her grip.

She sat opposite her.

“Tell me.”

Camille swallowed.

Then handed over the form.

Harrow read.

Her expression became steadily more troubled.

When she reached the supplementary statement, she stopped.

Then read it again.

For a moment, she said nothing.

Camille watched her.

The room was quiet except for the low hum of the ventilation system.

Finally, Harrow looked up.

“Who?”

Camille hesitated.

“Martin Rusk.”

The medical officer closed her eyes.

Very briefly.

Then opened them.

“What did he want?”

Camille told her.

The proposed transfer of the Pendants.

The reference to claimant verification.

The player asset registry.

The suggestion that the restored Keelborn could be assigned according to whoever had claimed their Pendants.

Harrow listened without interrupting.

When Camille finished, the medical officer looked down at the paperwork.

For several seconds, she appeared to be composing herself.

Then she asked:

“Did you sign anything?”

Camille shook her head.

“No.”

“Did you give him access to the case?”

“No.”

“Did he threaten you?”

The girl hesitated.

“Not exactly.”

Harrow looked up.

Camille swallowed.

“He said they might decide I shouldn’t keep them.”

The medical officer’s expression hardened.

For a moment, she looked toward the door.

Then back at Camille.

“Have you told the station’s security office?”

Camille lowered her eyes.

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Two days ago.”

“And?”

“They said any questions about official custody had to be referred through administration.”

Harrow remained very still.

Camille continued.

“I don’t know who to trust.”

The words came out quietly.

So quietly that the medical officer almost missed them.

Then Camille looked up.

Her eyes were bright.

“I’m sorry.”

Harrow blinked.

“For what?”

“I know you’ve all been trying to help me.”

The medical officer’s expression softened.

Camille’s voice trembled.

“I know the doctors haven’t done anything wrong. The people who repaired my equipment have been kind. The harbor crew saved my life.”

She swallowed.

“But every time somebody asks about the Pendants, I get scared.”

Harrow looked toward the case.

Then back at the girl.

For several seconds, she was quiet.

Then she said:

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

Camille lowered her eyes.

The medical officer leaned forward.

“Look at me.”

The girl hesitated.

Then obeyed.

Harrow spoke carefully.

“You survived a disaster almost two months ago. You’ve spent virtually that entire time here, recovering from injuries while grieving five people you loved. You are entitled to feel safe while doing that.”

Camille’s expression crumpled slightly.

Harrow continued.

“If somebody is using administrative procedures to threaten that safety, the procedures need to be examined. Not your grief.”

For a moment, Camille couldn’t speak.

Then she whispered:

“I want to leave.”

The medical officer nodded.

“I can see that.”

“Tonight.”

Harrow’s expression changed.

For several seconds, she considered the request.

Then she looked toward the medical chart.

“Your equipment isn’t ready for unrestricted deployment.”

Camille swallowed.

“I know.”

“Your right side still has residual pain from the battle.”

“I know.”

“Prolonged operating periods have not been fully assessed.”

“I know.”

Harrow looked toward her.

“And you haven’t demonstrated that you can sustain an independent voyage without assistance.”

Camille lowered her eyes.

For a moment, the room became quiet.

Then the girl spoke.

“If I stay, they’re going to take them.”

Harrow didn’t answer immediately.

Camille tightened her arms around the case.

“Maybe not tomorrow. Maybe they’ll make me sign another form, or tell me I have to put the Pendants somewhere safer, or say they’re just going to inspect them.”

Her voice broke.

“But somebody’s going to take them.”

Harrow watched her.

For several seconds, she appeared to be weighing two dangers against each other.

A damaged destroyer traveling alone across uncertain waters.

Or a traumatized survivor remaining in a facility where she no longer believed anyone could protect her friends.

Neither was acceptable.

One might still be necessary.

The medical officer exhaled.

Then reached for another folder.

“Show me your proposed route.”

Camille blinked.

“What?”

“Your route to Horizon.”

For a moment, she simply stared.

Then she fumbled through her bag and produced a folded navigation chart.

Harrow spread it across the desk.

The paper was worn at the edges.

Several possible routes had been marked in pencil.

Some followed established shipping corridors.

Others passed through less frequently traveled approaches.

Camille had been studying them for days.

Harrow examined the chart.

Then looked toward her.

“You’ve been planning this.”

Camille lowered her eyes.

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“A while.”

The medical officer considered that.

Then sighed.

“Of course.”

She followed the penciled route.

“Fuel?”

Camille answered with the latest figures from the maintenance department.

“Propulsion?”

“Limited but functional. The engineers cleared it for local movement and controlled extended testing.”

“Not a long solo passage.”

“No.”

Harrow looked toward the chart.

For a moment, she was silent.

Then she spoke.

“I’m not signing a report that says you’re fit for unrestricted combat or prolonged independent operation.”

Camille nodded quickly.

“I don’t want you to.”

“But I can document that your recuperation should continue at another facility, and that remaining here is causing significant distress.”

The girl stared.

Harrow continued.

“A medical transfer is different from an operational deployment.”

Camille swallowed.

“You’d do that?”

“I can recommend it.”

A pause.

“Whether the station commander approves it is another matter.”

Camille lowered her eyes.

Harrow looked toward the reinforced case.

Then quietly added:

“And I don’t intend to let Rusk decide whether you need medical care.”

For the first time that evening, Camille felt something loosen inside her chest.

Not safety.

Not yet.

But the possibility of it.

She whispered:

“Thank you.”

Harrow reached for her pen.

“Don’t thank me until you’re somewhere safe.”

The local commanding officer received Camille’s request shortly before midnight.

The meeting took place in a small office overlooking the harbor, with a regional operations chart mounted beside the window and a stack of repair reports occupying most of the desk.

Camille stood beside Lieutenant Harrow.

The station commander, an older native officer named Captain Renwick, read the request twice before speaking.

For several seconds, he appeared deeply unhappy.

Then he set down the paper.

“Miss Duret.”

Camille straightened.

“Sir.”

“You understand that your rigging has not received unrestricted operational clearance.”

“Yes.”

“You understand that a long passage outside protected coastal waters will expose you to risks we cannot eliminate.”

“Yes.”

Renwick looked toward Harrow.

“Doctor?”

The medical officer handed over her assessment.

He read it.

Slowly.

Then sighed.

“Compassionate reassignment.”

Harrow nodded.

“Continued recuperation under another command, with explicit restrictions on combat deployment.”

The captain looked toward Camille.

“Why Horizon?”

She hesitated.

For a moment, she considered telling him about the reports concerning Kade Bher.

Then she decided that wasn’t the important part.

“Because they have an Akashi-class repair girl.”

Renwick nodded.

“That much is true.”

“And medical facilities.”

“Yes.”

“And I heard they don’t let people take Pendants.”

The room became quiet.

The captain slowly looked up.

For several seconds, he regarded her.

Then he glanced toward the case.

Camille held it tighter.

Renwick noticed.

His expression changed.

He leaned back.

“Who’s been bothering you?”

Camille glanced toward Harrow.

The medical officer nodded.

The girl drew a breath.

Then answered.

The names.

The forms.

The registry.

The questions.

The suggestion that her friends might be assigned to somebody else’s account.

Renwick listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he looked toward the window.

The harbor lights glimmered across dark water.

For a long time, he said nothing.

Then he asked:

“Do you believe my officers intend to steal your friends’ Pendants?”

Camille swallowed.

“Not all of them.”

He turned.

“That’s not what I asked.”

She lowered her eyes.

For several seconds, she struggled.

Then she answered honestly.

“I don’t know anymore.”

The captain closed his eyes.

A long silence followed.

Finally, he looked toward Harrow.

“Doctor, can we provide a suitable escort?”

The medical officer hesitated.

“Not at short notice. Our available patrol craft are committed to coastal defense, and the regional transport schedules are already disrupted.”

Renwick looked toward Camille.

“Could you wait until one becomes available?”

The girl didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

The captain could see the answer in the way her hands tightened around the case.

He sighed.

Then reached for his pen.

“I won’t order you to remain in a place where you believe your friends are being treated as prizes.”

Camille stared.

Renwick continued.

“But I’m not going to pretend I like this.”

He signed the medical transfer recommendation.

Then added a separate notation authorizing departure for continued recuperation, conditional upon a final engineering check and the provision of appropriate navigation and communication information.

It wasn’t a combat assignment.

It wasn’t a declaration that her injuries had disappeared.

It was permission to leave.

Camille stared at the signature.

For several seconds, she couldn’t speak.

Then she whispered:

“Thank you, sir.”

Renwick studied her.

His expression softened.

“Get there alive.”

She nodded.

“I’ll try.”

He considered that answer.

Then sighed.

“Good enough.”

Outside the office, Lieutenant Harrow stopped beside the corridor window.

Camille turned toward her.

For a moment, the two women simply looked at one another.

Then Harrow handed over the signed papers.

“Keep these dry.”

Camille nodded.

“Okay.”

“And keep a copy with your navigation records.”

“Yes.”

“And if anybody challenges your movement, give them the authorization. Don’t argue with someone carrying a weapon.”

Camille swallowed.

“Right.”

The medical officer examined her carefully.

Then stepped closer.

“Camille.”

The girl looked up.

“If your equipment begins failing at sea, stop trying to prove you can manage everything by yourself. Call for help.”

Camille nodded.

“Yes.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

Harrow considered her.

Then quietly asked:

“Are you frightened?”

Camille looked toward the harbor.

For several seconds, she didn’t answer.

Then she whispered:

“Terrified.”

The medical officer nodded.

For a moment, her expression softened.

Then she reached forward.

Not toward the case.

Toward Camille.

And hugged her.

The girl froze.

Only for a second.

Then her arms tightened around the woman.

The reinforced case rested awkwardly between them.

Neither cared.

Camille closed her eyes.

For a moment, she remembered the last time she’d been hugged by someone who wasn’t trying to keep her alive.

Klara.

Before the voyage.

The memory struck so suddenly that her breath caught.

Then she began crying.

Quietly.

Against the medical officer’s shoulder.

Harrow held her.

For as long as she needed.

When Camille finally stepped back, she wiped her face with one sleeve.

“Sorry.”

Harrow shook her head.

“No.”

The girl swallowed.

Then managed a small smile.

“Right.”

The medical officer nodded.

“Right.”

Beyond the window, the harbor lights shone across the water.

And somewhere below them, Camille’s damaged Mogador-class equipment waited for a voyage it had never been repaired to make.

The Mogador Leaves at Dawn

The final engineering inspection began at four forty in the morning.

Camille had slept for less than an hour.

She stood beneath the yellow maintenance lights with her transfer papers folded inside a waterproof pouch, watching three technicians move around the partially restored Mogador-class rigging.

The equipment rested on its supporting cradle beside the service pier.

At first glance, it looked impressive.

French destroyer hull sections.

The distinctive arrangement of four twin 138.6-millimeter gun turrets.

Torpedo apparatus.

Propulsion machinery.

Control systems mounted in a compact arrangement designed to allow its Keelborn operator to maneuver across the water as a formidable surface combatant.

The design was elegant in its own mechanical way.

Fast.

Powerful.

Unmistakably built for movement.

But the closer one looked, the more obvious the repairs became.

One of the gun positions remained secured out of operation, and a protective cover had been fitted around the damaged mounting. Several plates had been replaced with temporary components whose finishes did not quite match the original steel. New fasteners shone beside older fittings, and maintenance markings identified parts of the machinery that still required inspection before combat use.

The starboard propulsion support assembly had been repaired.

Repaired, not replaced.

Camille knew the difference.

She could feel it whenever she moved.

The system responded with a faint hesitation under certain loads, as though the machinery remembered the violence that had once torn through it.

The main propulsion equipment was serviceable at reduced sustained power.

The fuel distribution system had been checked.

The steering response had passed its latest trial.

But she remained medically restricted, and no technician was willing to certify the entire rigging for unrestricted operations.

Camille hadn’t expected one to.

She only needed it to carry her.

Across the sea.

To Horizon.

The senior technician stood beside the inspection sheet, frowning.

“You know I don’t like this.”

Camille nodded.

“Yes.”

He looked toward the temporary starboard support.

“Extended operations may place more strain on that mounting than we’ve measured.”

“I know.”

“And we haven’t completed the full endurance test.”

“I know.”

He sighed.

“You keep saying that.”

Camille looked toward him.

For a moment, she was quiet.

Then she answered:

“Because I do know.”

The technician studied her.

The girl looked exhausted.

Her face was pale beneath the maintenance lights, and the bag at her feet seemed to contain everything she considered important enough to take.

Beside it rested the reinforced case.

He looked at it.

Then away.

For a moment, his expression softened.

“Let’s at least make sure the work we’ve done isn’t going to fail immediately.”

Camille nodded.

“Please.”

They continued the inspection.

Hydraulic pressure.

Auxiliary electrical supply.

Mechanical retention points.

Emergency shutdown systems.

Cooling arrangements.

Fuel-feed response.

Propulsion balance.

Steering and control-surface behavior.

Communications equipment.

Portable repair supplies.

Everything that could be checked before departure was checked.

Twice, where necessary.

The technician rejected one cable fitting and ordered a replacement from the nearby parts cabinet. Another engineer adjusted a retaining clamp that had begun vibrating during the previous day’s test.

Camille watched every movement.

She didn’t complain.

She didn’t ask them to hurry.

She knew how much depended upon those small details.

The Blackwake attack had taught her that lesson in the worst possible way.

A retaining mechanism that failed under load could turn an ordinary maneuver into a fall.

An unstable gun mount could injure its operator even without firing.

A propulsion system forced beyond its tested limits might refuse to respond when the next wave came.

And at sea, a small failure could become fatal before help arrived.

She knew.

She knew all of it.

That was why the inspection frightened her.

Because every problem the technicians found meant another opportunity for somebody to delay her departure.

And every delay meant remaining within reach of people who had begun talking about her friends as items to be claimed.

The senior technician finished his final checks shortly before six.

He looked toward Camille.

Then toward the signed transfer orders.

For several seconds, he seemed to be considering whether to refuse the entire arrangement.

At last, he sighed.

“Propulsion remains available within the limitations stated here.”

He handed her the document.

Camille took it.

“Thank you.”

“That’s not an endorsement of taking her on a long solo passage.”

The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

“I know.”

“Don’t use emergency power unless you absolutely have to.”

She nodded.

“Right.”

“Monitor the starboard support temperature. If it starts rising, reduce load and inspect before continuing.”

“Yes.”

“Keep the auxiliary cooling intake clear.”

“I will.”

“And for the love of everything that floats, don’t try to fight anything.”

Camille lowered her eyes.

For a moment, she saw a terrible blue eye emerging through gray water.

Then she nodded.

“I don’t want to.”

The technician watched her.

Something in his expression changed.

He’d expected stubbornness.

Perhaps impatience.

Not that quiet answer.

He looked toward the reinforced case.

Then back.

For a moment, he seemed almost ashamed.

“Camille.”

She looked up.

“Yes?”

“I hope you reach Horizon.”

Her expression softened.

“Me too.”

He nodded.

Then stepped aside.

The maintenance cradle’s restraints were ready to be released.

The Mogador-class girl moved closer to her equipment.

For the first time since the terrible morning nearly two months earlier, she was about to leave the protected harbor without a medical team waiting beside the pier.

The thought made her stomach twist.

She took a breath.

Then another.

And began fitting the rigging.

It was not a quick process.

Camille had never liked how effortless naval equipment sometimes appeared in old promotional imagery. A character stood dramatically beneath a sunset, machinery appeared in a spectacular arrangement around her body, and the scene moved on before anyone needed to explain how the fittings worked.

Reality had very little patience for spectacle.

The support frames needed to be positioned.

Load-bearing mounts secured.

Mechanical connections checked.

Power and control lines verified.

The propulsion assemblies required careful alignment, and her injured right side protested when she shifted her weight incorrectly.

A technician helped guide one section into place.

Another checked the retention locks.

Camille waited while the pressure readings stabilized.

Then she tested the response.

A low vibration traveled through the rigging.

The machinery came alive around her.

Not comfortably.

Not entirely.

But enough.

Her shoulders tightened.

The familiar weight settled against her body.

The feeling was strange.

For nearly two months, she’d associated her rigging with pain.

Broken metal.

The sound of gunfire.

The terrible last moments of her friends.

Now it was also the only means by which she could reach somewhere safer.

She looked toward the empty retention clamp near her hip.

The place where her axe had once rested.

For several seconds, she stared.

Then she slowly lowered one hand.

You bought me enough time.

The thought was directed toward an object that probably lay somewhere beneath the sea.

It was a foolish thing to think.

She thought it anyway.

Then she turned toward her bag.

The reinforced Pendant case had been secured within a protected compartment on the rigging, surrounded by shock-absorbing material and held by multiple mechanical restraints.

Camille had installed an additional personal lock.

She checked it.

Then checked the weather seal.

Then checked the compartment itself.

The senior technician watched without comment.

When she finished, he asked:

“All five?”

Camille froze.

For a moment, her expression changed.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.”

The technician looked toward the compartment.

His voice was gentle.

“Good.”

Camille swallowed.

Then returned her attention to the machinery.

At six seventeen, Martin Rusk appeared on the maintenance pier.

Camille saw him before he reached the equipment cradle.

Her stomach tightened immediately.

He wore the same administrative jacket.

The same identification plate.

And the same expression of controlled irritation he’d displayed when she refused to sign his transfer form.

A second man walked beside him carrying a folder.

Both stopped near the pier’s access gate.

Rusk looked toward the Mogador-class girl.

Then toward the technicians.

“What is this?”

The senior technician lowered his checklist.

“Medical transfer.”

Rusk frowned.

“Transfer?”

Camille remained still.

The man looked toward her.

“Miss Duret.”

She didn’t answer.

Rusk turned toward the technician.

“Who authorized release of her equipment?”

The technician held up the inspection document.

“Station command. Signed orders.”

Rusk reached for it.

The technician did not hand it over immediately.

For a moment, they regarded each other.

Then the engineer passed him the copy designated for administrative inspection.

Rusk read.

His expression became steadily less pleasant.

“Compassionate reassignment.”

Camille watched him.

The man looked up.

“To Horizon Atoll?”

“Yes,” she answered.

“Why?”

She said nothing.

Rusk glanced toward the case compartment.

Then back.

“What about the recovered artifacts?”

Camille felt her fingers tighten.

“They’re coming with me.”

The man stared.

For a moment, he seemed unable to believe the answer.

Then he turned toward the second administrator.

“Is this transfer registered?”

The man checked his documents.

“Station command authorization is valid.”

Rusk frowned.

“And the Pendant custody review?”

“No final order issued.”

The words hung between them.

No final order.

No legal transfer.

No recognized claimant.

Nothing that would allow Rusk to demand the Pendants without revealing that he was trying to do so anyway.

Camille felt a small, desperate flicker of hope.

Then Rusk looked toward her.

His expression hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.”

She swallowed.

“Maybe.”

He blinked.

For a moment, the answer seemed to surprise him.

Camille continued.

“But it’s mine to make.”

The senior technician lowered his clipboard.

The maintenance crew remained quiet.

Rusk took one step closer.

“Miss Duret, you are carrying potentially valuable regional assets—”

“They’re my friends.”

He sighed.

“We have discussed this.”

“No.”

Camille’s voice trembled.

For a moment, she thought she might not be able to finish.

Then she forced the words out.

“You’ve talked at me. You’ve given me forms. You’ve asked what they’re worth.”

She swallowed.

“You haven’t once asked who they were.”

Rusk stared.

The second administrator looked down.

Camille continued.

“Nika liked sweet tea.”

Her voice was shaking now.

“Vera hated when people borrowed her tools without asking. Lillian pretended she didn’t like jokes. Frieda made fun of everyone’s steering. Klara tied her hair badly and then complained about it.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Camille’s eyes filled.

“They were people.”

The man looked uncomfortable.

For one brief moment, she hoped he might understand.

Then Rusk glanced toward the compartment.

“Yes, well, none of that changes the administrative requirements.”

The hope vanished.

Camille stared at him.

Something inside her became very quiet.

Then she turned toward the senior technician.

“Can I leave?”

The man looked toward the signed papers.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Rusk opened his mouth.

The technician raised one hand.

“Her transfer is authorized by station command. Your office has no conflicting order.”

The administrator stared.

For several seconds, he seemed to be searching for something he could say.

Then the technician continued.

“Either take it up with Captain Renwick or clear the departure area.”

Rusk’s expression became dark.

Camille looked toward him.

For the first time, she saw that he wasn’t going to stop.

Not emotionally.

Not in his mind.

He might be forced to let her leave.

But he still believed there was something in her possession that somebody like him had the right to claim.

She turned toward the water.

The technicians began removing the remaining cradle restraints.

One by one.

The machinery settled.

The buoyancy assemblies responded.

Camille felt the familiar shifting pressure of her rigging taking its own weight.

Then the final support released.

The Mogador-class girl stood independently.

Beside the pier.

Above the water.

For a moment, she nearly cried.

She hadn’t been sure she’d ever feel that again.

The harbor master cleared her departure at six twenty-nine.

Camille’s movement would be recorded as a medically restricted transfer, not an operational sortie. Her course had been checked against known hazards and recent Blackwake activity, and she had received the latest available weather information.

A reserve communications battery had been issued.

Additional food and water were secured.

Her portable repair kit had been supplemented with spare seals, electrical connectors, a small selection of mechanical components, and emergency signaling equipment.

It wasn’t enough to guarantee a safe voyage.

Nothing could do that.

But people had tried.

Camille knew it.

She looked toward the pier.

Lieutenant Harrow stood beside the access gate.

The senior technician was there too.

Several maintenance workers had paused to watch.

And farther along the waterfront stood a sailor Camille recognized.

He was older than many of the former players she’d met.

A native harbor hand whose uniform had been faded by years of work beneath the Pacific sun.

He was the man who’d helped catch her when she collapsed on the landing platform after the Blackwake engagement.

Camille remembered his voice.

Easy.

She remembered the way he’d helped open the damaged compartment containing the Pendants.

And the promise he’d made when she begged him not to lose them.

Now he stood beside a mooring post with his cap in one hand.

Camille looked toward him.

For a moment, she couldn’t speak.

Then she raised her hand.

The sailor returned the gesture.

His expression was gentle.

“Get there, girl.”

Camille swallowed.

Then nodded.

“I’ll try.”

He smiled.

“Good.”

She looked toward Harrow.

The medical officer raised one hand.

Camille returned the gesture.

Then she turned toward the harbor entrance.

The eastern sky had begun to brighten.

Pale sunlight touched the upper structures of the coastal defense station.

The sea beyond the breakwater glimmered beneath a faint morning haze.

Camille took a breath.

Then advanced her propulsion controls.

The machinery responded.

A low mechanical vibration traveled through the rigging.

Water moved around her feet.

A narrow wake formed behind her.

She began moving.

Slowly at first.

Then a little faster.

The maintenance pier receded.

The sailors became smaller.

The harbor cranes shifted behind the warehouses.

The medical wing disappeared beneath the skyline.

Camille kept her eyes forward.

For a moment, she felt almost weightless.

Then the rigging’s familiar resistance returned.

A faint ache spread along her injured side.

The starboard support assembly hummed beneath load.

She adjusted.

Reduced the strain.

And continued.

The breakwater approached.

Beyond it lay open ocean.

Camille looked back once.

Just once.

The facility stood beneath the morning light.

A place where kind people had saved her.

A place where she had begun recovering.

A place she could no longer trust to keep her friends safe.

Her throat tightened.

She whispered:

“I’m sorry.”

Then she turned away.

And crossed the harbor entrance.

The moment she passed the outer navigation marker, the sea changed.

Inside the breakwater, the water had been comparatively calm.

Beyond it, the Pacific moved in long swells that lifted and lowered her equipment with an indifference Camille found almost offensive.

The rigging responded.

The propulsion systems adjusted.

She felt the weight shifting around her, the repaired support assemblies working to maintain balance.

For several minutes, she concentrated entirely on staying upright.

A slow turn.

A correction.

A reduction in power.

Another adjustment.

Then the machinery settled into a manageable rhythm.

Camille released a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.

She checked her heading.

Then the chart.

Then the navigation instruments.

Horizon lay far away.

Not impossibly far.

But farther than she would have liked to travel alone.

She had planned conservative stages, with alternate refuge points and possible relay contacts marked along the route. She would not try to maintain the speeds her Mogador-class machinery might once have achieved in combat. The damaged equipment couldn’t sustain that, and neither could she.

Every hour would have to be earned.

Camille looked toward the protective compartment.

She could not see the Pendants inside.

That bothered her.

She knew the latches were secured.

Knew she’d checked them.

But the habit of counting had become so strong that simply knowing wasn’t always enough.

For a moment, she considered stopping and opening the compartment.

Then she looked toward the coast.

Already receding.

Already farther away than she wanted.

She swallowed.

“Five.”

The word escaped aloud.

She looked toward the western horizon.

Then continued.

“Nika.”

A small wave struck her portside equipment.

She adjusted.

“Vera.”

The rigging steadied.

“Lillian.”

Her breathing slowed.

“Frieda.”

She checked her heading.

“Klara.”

Then she looked toward the open sea.

For a moment, a faint smile appeared.

“Everybody aboard.”

She increased power slightly.

The Mogador-class destroyer began moving westward through the morning light.

And behind her, on a maintenance pier that was growing smaller by the minute, Martin Rusk watched her leave.

He held a telephone message in one hand.

The paper had arrived only after she crossed the harbor entrance.

It was addressed to regional logistics personnel.

Its contents referred to a pending inquiry concerning recovered Keelborn Pendants.

Rusk read it.

Then looked toward the sea.

For several seconds, his expression remained unreadable.

Finally, he turned toward the communications office.

“Get me the western traffic desk.”

The clerk beside him hesitated.

“Sir?”

Rusk folded the paper.

“I need to report an unscheduled movement.”

The clerk frowned.

“She has authorized transfer orders.”

“I know.”

The man looked toward the horizon.

Then quietly added:

“I also know what she’s carrying.”

The clerk studied him.

For a moment, she seemed uncertain.

Then she reached for the communications register.

And Camille, already beyond the outer marker, knew nothing of the call being prepared behind her.

The Sea Makes No Promises

By midmorning, the coastal defense facility had disappeared below the horizon.

Camille noticed the moment it happened.

One minute, the tallest signal mast remained visible as a dark line against the pale sky. The next, she looked back and found nothing except the long curve of the sea.

The disappearance frightened her more than she expected.

She had spent much of the second month wanting to leave, and the last several days desperately trying to make herself do it.

Now she had.

There were no more hospital corridors. No more administrative visitors asking to inspect the case. No more questions about claimant registries or the supposed value of Gnevny-class Pendants.

There was also no medical team.

No protected harbor.

No technician who could replace a damaged fitting within an hour.

No one to catch her if her equipment failed.

Camille stood alone on the water, carried by physical machinery that had nearly been destroyed in the worst battle of her life, and realized that she had traded one kind of fear for another.

For several minutes, she considered turning around.

The thought came without warning.

She imagined returning to the coastal facility before anyone had time to notice she’d reconsidered. Lieutenant Harrow would probably be relieved. The senior technician would complain that he’d been right about the voyage all along. Captain Renwick might even find a way to move her into a more secure part of the station.

Perhaps Rusk would leave her alone after being warned.

Perhaps the custody review would be rejected.

Perhaps everything would become sensible again.

Camille looked toward the east.

Nothing.

The shore was gone.

For almost two months, she had measured every day against the walls of that same recuperation wing. Today was the first day she could no longer locate those walls by turning her head. The relief was real, and so was the terror of discovering how thoroughly the coastal station had become the geography of her life.

She thought of the way Rusk had spoken about the girls.

Recognized claimants.

She thought of him asking whether her friends’ Pendants were registered to her account.

And she knew she wouldn’t turn back.

The fear of the ocean was terrible.

The fear of going back had become worse.

She adjusted her course.

Then looked forward.

Somewhere beyond the horizon lay Horizon Atoll.

A naval station she had never visited.

A Commander she had never met.

People whose willingness to help she knew mostly through scattered reports and secondhand accounts.

It was a frightening amount of trust to place in strangers.

Camille held her heading.

The propulsion assemblies hummed.

The Pacific moved beneath her.

And the distance slowly began to disappear.

The first hour was spent checking everything.

Camille examined the performance readings more often than the senior technician had recommended.

Fuel flow.

Support-frame temperature.

Auxiliary power.

Steering response.

The small vibrations traveling through the damaged starboard mounting.

Every unusual sound made her stomach tighten.

Twice, she reduced power because she thought something was beginning to fail.

Both times, the noise proved harmless.

A loose external fitting settling under load.

The ordinary resonance of machinery operating against changing water pressure.

The sort of thing an experienced Keelborn might identify without conscious effort.

Camille was becoming experienced in a particularly unpleasant way.

She had learned to fear the machinery before she’d learned to trust it.

The difference mattered.

Before the Blackwake encounter, she and her friends had been fascinated by their equipment.

They’d argued about turret arrangements, propulsion systems, and what their ship classes might be capable of after proper training.

Nika had been delighted by her guns.

Lillian had enjoyed making lists of things the group needed to practice.

Frieda had insisted that their destroyer formation would eventually become terrifying.

Klara had suggested that they should begin by learning to travel in a straight line.

Vera had agreed enthusiastically.

Camille remembered laughing.

Now she listened to the propulsion system for signs of failure.

The joy of discovering a new world had been replaced by the exhausting responsibility of surviving it.

She hated that.

She hated how much she hated it.

Then a small wave struck the starboard hull section, and she had to stop thinking about anything else.

Her equipment shifted.

The repaired support assembly protested.

She corrected her balance before the movement became dangerous.

A familiar ache spread beneath her ribs.

Camille drew a sharp breath.

Then relaxed her shoulders.

“Easy.”

She didn’t know whether she was speaking to herself or the rigging.

Perhaps both.

She reduced speed slightly.

The machinery settled.

The ache faded.

And she continued.

The sun climbed.

The air grew warmer.

Salt dried against her exposed skin and collected along the edges of her protective clothing. The breeze pulled at her sleeves. Fine spray settled on her face whenever a swell broke awkwardly against the forward equipment.

Camille drank from the secured water bottle at the next scheduled check.

She made herself eat something afterward.

Not much.

A piece of bread.

A small portion of preserved food.

Enough to keep her stomach from becoming another problem.

Eating felt absurd.

She was frightened enough to struggle with every bite, yet her body insisted upon ordinary things.

Water.

Food.

Rest.

The same demands it had possessed before the Crisis.

The same demands her friends had once complained about.

She remembered Frieda insisting that somebody should invent a Keelborn ration that didn’t taste like emergency equipment packaging.

Klara had suggested eating the packaging instead.

Nika had actually tried chewing a small corner of an empty ration wrapper.

Vera had almost thrown her into the water.

Camille smiled.

It happened without her permission.

A small, warm movement across her face.

Then she remembered that the others weren’t there.

The smile disappeared.

She looked toward the protective compartment.

Five.

Still five.

She swallowed.

And continued eating.

For a few minutes, she let herself remember the sound of their laughter.

Not the battle.

Not the screaming.

Just the laughter.

It helped.

A little.

The first radio contact came shortly after noon.

Camille was checking a revised weather report when her receiver crackled.

“Mogador unit departing the coastal defense facility, respond.”

Her fingers went cold.

She looked toward the radio.

The voice was unfamiliar.

Male.

Calm.

It did not identify a station.

Camille hesitated.

Then answered cautiously.

“Identify your station.”

A burst of static followed.

Then the voice returned.

“Regional traffic coordination. Confirm your destination and cargo.”

Camille’s stomach tightened.

She looked toward the chart.

The radio remained silent for several seconds.

Then—

“Mogador unit, respond.”

She considered the wording.

No callsign.

No authentication.

No reference to her actual transfer clearance.

And an immediate question about cargo.

Not her medical condition.

Not whether the rigging was holding.

Cargo.

Camille looked toward the protective compartment.

Then slowly lowered her hand from the transmitter.

She did not answer.

The radio crackled again.

“Mogador unit, you are required to confirm your movement.”

She kept listening.

The voice sounded more irritated.

“Your transfer status remains under administrative review. Respond immediately.”

Camille’s throat tightened.

She looked toward the chart.

Then toward the sky.

A faint haze had begun forming along the distant horizon.

She remembered Harrow’s instructions.

If somebody challenges your movement, give them the authorization. Don’t argue with someone carrying a weapon.

There was no weapon in sight.

Only a voice.

But the feeling was similar.

Camille touched the transmitter.

Then stopped.

The signed transfer order was real.

Her departure had been recorded.

Her paperwork could be confirmed through official channels.

This voice had not provided any credentials.

She slowly withdrew her hand.

Another call followed.

“Mogador unit, final request. State your present position.”

Camille stared at the radio.

For several seconds, she was perfectly still.

Then she switched to the next authorized listening frequency.

The voice disappeared into static.

Her breathing became shallow.

She looked over her shoulder.

The ocean remained empty.

No pursuing vessel.

No aircraft.

No visible wake.

Only sunlight glittering across long swells.

Camille swallowed.

Then whispered:

“They know.”

She couldn’t prove it was Rusk.

Couldn’t prove the caller belonged to the people who’d been asking about the Pendants.

Perhaps it was an ordinary traffic office attempting to confirm a poorly coordinated departure.

Perhaps the station’s communications records had been delayed.

Perhaps she had just ignored a legitimate request.

She considered those possibilities.

Then remembered the first question.

Confirm your destination and cargo.

Her fingers tightened against the radio control.

She did not like it.

Not at all.

An hour later, a properly authenticated message reached her through the coastal service channel.

The operator was a woman.

Camille recognized her voice from the facility’s radio room.

“Camille Duret, this is Coastal Communications. Please acknowledge if receiving.”

Camille looked toward the transmitter.

For a moment, she hesitated.

Then she answered.

“Receiving.”

A faint breath escaped the other woman.

“Good. Your authorized transfer remains recorded. The western relay has your intended route and estimated arrival window.”

Camille closed her eyes.

For a second, relief nearly overwhelmed her.

Then the operator continued.

“We have received an inquiry concerning your movement from a separate regional office. Be advised that it did not include the authentication credentials required for an official course amendment.”

Camille’s eyes opened.

Her stomach tightened.

“Who sent it?”

The answer came after a pause.

“I can’t confirm the originating individual.”

Camille swallowed.

“Did they ask about the Pendants?”

A longer pause.

Then—

“They asked for your cargo declaration.”

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Camille looked toward the case compartment.

The radio operator continued.

“Your transfer documents do not require a public cargo description. Medical transport records remain restricted.”

The Mogador-class girl released a slow breath.

“Thank you.”

The operator hesitated.

Then spoke more quietly.

“Camille, are you all right?”

The question nearly undid her.

For several seconds, she couldn’t answer.

Then she looked toward the empty sea.

“I’m moving.”

A pause.

The woman understood.

“All right.”

Camille swallowed.

“Please don’t give anyone my location.”

The operator’s voice softened.

“Not without authenticated authority.”

Camille closed her eyes.

For one brief moment, the wind and the waves seemed less threatening.

“Thank you.”

The woman answered:

“Get to Horizon.”

A pause.

Then, almost too quietly:

“Good luck.”

The signal faded.

Camille remained motionless for several seconds.

Then she checked her heading.

Adjusted her course.

And continued.

Behind her, the coast remained beyond the horizon.

Ahead, the sea had begun darkening beneath the first distant clouds.

The First Night Without a Harbor

By sunset, Camille’s right shoulder was aching badly enough that she could no longer pretend not to notice.

The rigging had performed better than she’d feared.

That was the good news.

The starboard support temperature remained within its restricted operating limits. The repaired propulsion arrangement had not developed the dangerous vibration the technicians warned her about, and the auxiliary electrical systems were functioning.

The bad news was that Camille herself was not doing nearly so well.

Her legs ached from constantly adjusting to the swell.

Her lower back felt stiff.

The damaged area along her right side had become increasingly sensitive under the equipment’s sustained load.

And she’d spent most of the day so tense that the muscles around her shoulders seemed to have forgotten how to relax.

She had never undertaken a voyage like this alone.

Not even before the Blackwake attack.

Her earlier travels had been short training movements, supervised routes, or the disastrous crossing with her five friends.

Now she was carrying enough equipment to represent a powerful destroyer, yet had nobody beside her to help watch the horizon.

Nobody to remind her to drink.

Nobody to ask whether the latest machinery noise was normal.

Nobody to take over a watch while she closed her eyes.

The ocean didn’t care.

It kept moving.

The evening wind strengthened slightly.

Longer swells approached from the side, lifting her rigging and setting it down again with a rhythm that demanded constant attention.

Camille slowed.

She checked the chart.

The next planned sheltered stopping point lay farther ahead, behind a low reef formation and a small uninhabited island marked on older navigation records.

The place was not a military installation.

Not a harbor.

Merely a stretch of comparatively protected water where she could reduce her machinery to standby, inspect the fittings, and rest for a few hours without remaining exposed to the full swell.

She had chosen it precisely because it offered so little.

No fuel depot.

No large communications installation.

No valuable salvage.

Nothing a hostile former-player group would have reason to call a high-value location.

At least, she hoped not.

She checked the distance.

Then looked toward the darkening sky.

There was still enough light to make the approach safely if she maintained the current pace.

Camille considered the option of continuing through the night.

It would shorten the journey.

Perhaps by several hours.

But the thought of remaining alert until dawn made her feel sick.

She had barely slept before departure.

And fatigue was beginning to interfere with her concentration.

Twice in the past hour, she’d needed to recheck a heading she should have remembered.

Once she’d misread a temperature gauge before realizing the mistake.

Small errors.

Warning signs.

She knew what happened when small errors accumulated.

She’d seen it.

She’d survived it.

Camille turned toward the sheltered route.

Then reduced power.

“Sorry,” she whispered.

She wasn’t certain whom she was apologizing to.

Perhaps the girls.

Perhaps herself.

The rigging moved more slowly through the darkening water.

And somewhere beneath the evening sky, a tired destroyer began looking for a place to stop.

The island was little more than a low collection of stone, sand, and stubborn vegetation rising above the reef.

Its western side offered no protection at all.

Waves broke against the exposed rock, sending white spray into the fading light.

The eastern side was different.

A narrow indentation sheltered by the reef allowed the water to settle into something approaching calm during ordinary conditions.

Camille approached cautiously.

The chart was old.

The reef markers were incomplete.

And the last thing she needed was to damage her repaired equipment on submerged rock.

She slowed almost to a stop.

Checked the depth information.

Then watched the water carefully for changes in color and breaking waves.

The pale shallows lay to her left.

A darker channel opened ahead.

She followed it.

Slowly.

The propulsion system responded smoothly.

For a moment, she felt almost proud.

Then the starboard support emitted a brief metallic vibration.

Camille froze.

Her stomach dropped.

She reduced power.

The vibration faded.

For several seconds, she stood motionless on the water, listening.

Nothing.

She adjusted the load.

Tested again at minimal power.

The machinery responded normally.

Camille swallowed.

Then continued into the sheltered area.

She found a position with sufficient water beneath the rigging and a suitable point for securing the equipment against unwanted drift.

The temporary holding arrangement was not ideal.

But it was better than trying to sleep while moving across open water.

She reduced the propulsion systems to standby.

The sudden quiet was startling.

For most of the day, she’d heard the constant mechanical hum of her own equipment.

Now there was only the soft movement of water against the hull sections and the distant sound of surf striking the reef.

Camille closed her eyes.

For several seconds, she simply breathed.

Then she opened the protected compartment.

Checked the seals.

Released the inner case.

And began counting.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

All there.

All secure.

She exhaled.

Then lowered herself onto the small dry section of the rigging’s maintenance platform, using a folded protective cloth as a cushion.

It wasn’t comfortable.

The equipment had never been designed to serve as a bedroom.

But she could sit.

Rest her legs.

And remove some of the strain from her injured side.

She took another drink of water.

Ate part of a ration.

Checked the radio.

Then looked toward the stars beginning to appear overhead.

For a moment, the world was quiet.

Almost beautiful.

Camille hated how much that reminded her of the morning her friends died.

Nika had been the first to complain about the weather.

Camille remembered that clearly.

The six girls had set out beneath a gray sky, and Nika had announced that somebody should have arranged better conditions for their first proper voyage.

Lillian had replied that naval operations rarely consulted individual preferences.

Klara had suggested filing a complaint with the ocean.

Frieda had laughed.

Vera had threatened to make Nika swim if she collided with her again.

Camille had watched them from the edge of the formation.

She’d been carrying the camera.

That small device had eventually recorded almost everything.

The poor formation.

The joking.

The sudden appearance of the Blackwake destroyer.

And the terrible minutes afterward.

For almost two months, Camille hadn’t been able to make herself watch the recording of that first day’s catastrophe.

She knew it existed.

Knew people had seen it.

Knew the footage had traveled through news stations and emergency broadcasts across the Pacific.

But she’d refused to watch.

She didn’t need to.

The images already existed inside her head.

Sharper than any recording.

She remembered Nika’s expression when the first shells struck.

Vera’s desperate attempt to reach her.

The way Frieda and Klara turned toward the monster to cover the withdrawal.

Lillian’s voice pleading for Camille to leave before everyone died.

And the moment the Blackwake’s enormous blue eye fixed upon her.

Camille looked down at the case.

For several seconds, she couldn’t breathe properly.

Then she touched its lid.

“I’m sorry.”

The words came out before she realized she’d spoken.

A wave moved gently beneath the equipment.

She looked toward the stars.

“I’m sorry.”

Her voice cracked.

She remembered recovering the Pendants.

One after another.

The cold water.

The struggle.

The last desperate dive.

The moment she’d counted five.

Then the shore.

The breakwater.

The sailor who caught her.

She’d survived.

They hadn’t.

That fact had become the center of everything.

Camille pressed one hand over her mouth.

Her shoulders began shaking.

For several minutes, she cried.

Quietly at first.

Then harder.

The kind of crying that made it difficult to breathe and left her chest aching afterward.

Nobody heard her.

Nobody came.

The island remained dark.

The sea continued moving.

And the five Pendants rested safely beside her.

Eventually, exhaustion began taking over.

Camille wiped her face.

Then carefully secured the case against her body.

She did not want to leave it in the compartment while she slept.

Not tonight.

Not when there was nobody else watching.

She wrapped herself in the protective cloth, settled against the supported section of her rigging, and checked the mooring arrangement one final time.

Then she closed her eyes.

She did not dream of monsters immediately.

For a little while, she dreamed of a maintenance building.

Six girls stood in front of it.

Nika was smiling.

Vera had one hand raised in a peace sign.

Lillian was trying not to laugh.

Frieda was laughing anyway.

Klara was making a face behind her.

And Camille stood at the edge of the group, wondering whether the photograph would turn out properly.

In the dream, nobody was hurt.

Nobody was frightened.

There were no Pendants in a box.

Only six girls.

Together.

Camille smiled in her sleep.

Then, sometime after midnight, she woke with her own name caught in her throat.

The dream was gone.

The island was dark.

Her heart hammered.

For one terrible moment, she didn’t know where she was.

Then she felt the case against her chest.

Her hands closed around it.

She counted.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

And remained awake until the first faint light appeared above the reef.

The Second Morning

At sunrise, Camille discovered that one of her emergency water containers had leaked.

It was a small problem.

Insignificant, compared with everything else.

The seal around the cap had not been seated properly, and the container had slowly lost most of its contents during the night.

The water hadn’t damaged the Pendants.

It hadn’t reached the rigging’s electrical systems.

It hadn’t ruined her food.

It had simply escaped from a container that should have remained closed.

Camille stared at it.

Then, to her immense embarrassment, began crying again.

For several seconds, she sat on the maintenance platform holding the nearly empty container, unable to understand why something so ordinary could make her feel as though the entire world had become impossible.

She had survived a Blackwake destroyer.

Recovered five Pendants.

Convinced a commanding officer to approve her transfer.

Left the harbor before the people eyeing her friends could prevent it.

Crossed open water on damaged equipment.

Found a safe place to rest.

And now a badly fitted cap had defeated her.

Camille pressed one hand against her face.

“This is stupid.”

The words sounded small.

She tried to stop crying.

Couldn’t.

Then she took a long breath.

Another followed.

Eventually, the tears slowed.

Camille looked toward the container.

The cap was still loose.

She tightened it.

Checked the remaining water.

Recalculated her consumption allowance.

Then moved the damaged container into the inspection compartment so it wouldn’t be trusted again.

There was still enough water for the planned passage if she maintained reasonable consumption and avoided unnecessary delay.

She had not lost everything.

She had not even lost very much.

It only felt that way.

Camille lowered the container.

Then looked toward the rising sun.

For a moment, she imagined Vera standing beside her.

You’re doing it again.

Camille swallowed.

“What?”

Thinking that one mistake means everything’s over.

A faint smile appeared.

She could almost hear the annoyed tone.

Vera had never been especially patient with unnecessary despair.

Not because she lacked compassion.

Because she believed problems should be separated into those that could be fixed and those that couldn’t.

Nika had once accused her of being emotionally similar to a maintenance checklist.

Vera had answered that maintenance checklists were useful and Nika should try reading one.

Camille laughed.

The sound surprised her.

Then she wiped her face.

“Right.”

She looked toward the water.

“One problem.”

She rose carefully.

The injured side of her body protested.

She waited until the discomfort settled.

Then began the morning inspections.

One problem at a time.

The starboard support temperature was acceptable.

The control systems passed their checks.

The propeller assemblies responded properly at low power.

The temporary fasteners remained secure.

Camille examined the fuel distribution readings twice, comparing them against her notes from the previous day.

Consumption had been slightly higher than planned during the final approach to the reef.

Not disastrous.

But enough to matter if she encountered bad weather or needed to change routes.

She adjusted her remaining fuel plan accordingly.

Then she checked the radio.

The emergency battery remained charged.

The primary set functioned.

Her weather receiver was producing intermittent static, but the signal was usable.

The distant forecast suggested that conditions along the next section of the route might become unsettled during the afternoon, with passing squalls and rougher seas in the outer approaches.

Camille studied the chart.

The most direct route would remain exposed to the weather.

A longer southern variation might allow her to use the lee of another island group, but it would consume additional fuel and add time.

She considered the options.

For several minutes, she compared distance, likely sea state, and the limitations of her equipment.

Then she chose the longer route.

It wasn’t glamorous.

It wasn’t fast.

But the purpose of the journey was not to reach Horizon in record time.

It was to arrive alive.

Camille secured the Pendant case.

Checked the locking mechanism.

Then brought the propulsion systems online.

The machinery vibrated softly around her.

The rigging shifted into its operational balance.

For a moment, she stood still, listening.

Everything sounded normal.

She released a breath.

Then carefully left the sheltered water.

The island moved behind her.

The open Pacific returned.

And the second day began.

By late morning, the weather had begun changing.

High clouds spread across the sky, softening the sunlight. The wind shifted, carrying cooler air across the water. Long swells approached from a different direction than the previous day, creating a confused movement that made the damaged rigging work harder to maintain stability.

Camille reduced speed before the conditions became dangerous.

She remembered the technicians warning her about sustained loading.

The starboard support could tolerate ordinary motion.

What they hadn’t fully assessed was how it would behave through hours of repeated heavy correction.

That was the sort of uncertainty she could not afford to ignore.

She adjusted her course slightly, taking the waves at an angle that reduced their worst effects.

The propulsion systems responded.

The rigging remained stable.

For a while, she concentrated entirely on maintaining a comfortable movement.

Then the first squall arrived.

It came across the sea as a dark band beneath the clouds, carrying rain so dense that the horizon disappeared behind a gray curtain.

Camille saw it approaching.

She secured her loose equipment.

Checked the waterproof seals.

Reduced speed again.

Then the rain struck.

The Pacific vanished.

For several seconds, she could barely see beyond the forward machinery.

Water hammered against the armor panels.

Wind pulled at her clothing.

Spray rose from the waves, mixing with the rain until it became difficult to tell where the sea ended and the sky began.

Camille lowered her head.

The rigging rose over one swell.

Dropped into another.

She adjusted her balance.

The repaired support assembly groaned.

Her stomach tightened.

She reduced power.

The machinery settled slightly.

Then another wave struck.

Camille stumbled.

Her right side flared with pain.

She caught the control support before falling.

For one terrible instant, she was back in the battle.

Gray water.

Black spray.

Machinery screaming beneath strain.

She heard Nika shout.

Saw Vera reaching for her.

Then a thunderclap rolled across the sky.

Camille gasped.

The memory broke.

She was standing in rain.

There was no Blackwake destroyer.

No glowing blue eye.

No gunfire.

Only weather.

Ordinary, dangerous weather.

She swallowed.

Then spoke aloud.

“Just rain.”

The wind howled.

She tightened her grip.

“Just rain.”

Another swell lifted her equipment.

Camille adjusted.

The machinery responded.

“Just rain.”

The words became a rhythm.

Not a spell.

Not a promise.

Simply something to keep her thoughts from running back toward the battle.

She watched the instruments.

Maintained the heading.

And continued through the squall.

When the worst of the rain passed, Camille was exhausted.

Her clothing was wet.

Her hands ached.

The right-side support temperature had risen, though it remained below the limit specified in the transfer instructions.

She reduced power and waited for the machinery to cool.

The sea gradually became visible again.

Gray.

Restless.

Stretching toward a horizon obscured by low clouds.

Camille checked her position.

Then the course.

The squall had pushed her farther from the intended track than she’d realized.

Not dangerously.

Not yet.

But enough to require correction.

She considered the updated route.

Then looked toward the remaining fuel.

A small, unpleasant thought formed.

What if I don’t make it?

Camille closed her eyes.

She imagined the rigging failing beyond radio range.

The protective compartment sinking with her.

The five Pendants lost beneath miles of water.

Nobody knowing where to search.

The thought struck so hard that her breathing quickened.

For a moment, she wanted to tear the case from its compartment and hold it.

Count.

Check.

Prove that the girls were still there.

Instead, she forced herself to look at the instruments.

The support temperature was falling.

Fuel remained sufficient for the revised route.

The propulsion systems were functioning.

Her radio worked.

She had several contingency points marked on the chart.

Nothing had failed yet.

Camille took a breath.

Then another.

“Not yet.”

She looked toward the horizon.

“I’m not done.”

The sea moved beneath her.

She adjusted her heading.

And kept going.

A Shape at the Edge of Visibility

The suspicious contact appeared shortly after the weather cleared.

At first, Camille thought it was another cloud shadow.

A dark mark near the horizon.

Small enough to disappear whenever the waves rose between them.

Then she saw it again.

A vertical line.

A faint outline.

Something moving over the water.

She raised her binoculars.
