Death Game: Starting as a Trickster, Pretending to Be a God

Chapter 167: How to Use the ʼFreelancerʼ

After Fish finished speaking, Phantom obediently closed his mouth. However, his expression carried a hint of resentment as he pulled out a small mirror from his top hat, examining himself from left to right as if asking, ”Am I really that annoying?” Clearly, this member of the Free Alliance had little self-awareness about his reputation and personality.

Comparing him with another Free Alliance member Li Nian, Lin Yu couldnʼt help but form a thought: ”Is one of the selection criteria for the Free Alliance being ʼunconsciously annoyingʼ?” Should he have Zhu Ming demonstrate some of these personality traits later? But those were considerations for after they got out. Right now, what needed consideration was...

How to help Fish pass this [Dessert] challenge. As fellow Unique Class holders, helping Fish was indirectly helping himself. After some thought, Lin Yu spoke again.

”[Alarm Clock]... Could you tell me about its functions? When you chose it, you must have seen its description. Do you still remember?” Fish crossed her arms: ”Of course I remember!”

”The [Alarm Clock] allows me to simultaneously use abilities from three ʼClassesʼ - with time limitations. Depending on the three ʼClassesʼ I choose, it randomly sets an ʼalarm timeʼ between one hour and seventy-two hours. Before the alarm sounds, I can freely use all three Class abilities.”

”Each time the alarm rings, I randomly lose one of the abilities.” Hearing Fishʼs explanation, Lin Yu pondered. So the ʼFreelancerʼ couldnʼt inherently use multiple Class abilities simultaneously - it required the [Alarm Clock]ʼs assistance. But...

This item sounded quite powerful. Why hadnʼt Fish chosen it? Was the other [Item] more suitable for her? Lin Yu shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it. He followed Phantomʼs train of thought.

”So among your current Class abilities... is there anything that could interact with this alarm clock?” Fish thought for a moment.

”Well... might as well come clean. The three abilities I drew for this session are ʼSoldierʼ, ʼStudentʼ, and ʼMonkʼ... I havenʼt decided which to use yet.” Hearing this, Lin Yu nodded.

It seemed the ʼFreelancerʼ ability involved drawing three Class abilities per game session for selection? And apparently, one could delay choosing indefinitely. Lin Yu was very familiar with both ʼSoldierʼ and ʼStudentʼ - the latter was common, while the former, though fewer in number, formed the backbone of major organizations.
ʼMonkʼ... Lin Yu searched his memory. Like ʼNinjaʼ, it was a relatively rare Class. Its ability was rather special - technically ʼSkill Typeʼ but many considered it ʼSpecial Typeʼ.

The ʼMonkʼ ability involved performing a ”pious prayer” to randomly receive one of three blessings: ”Good Fortune”, ”Revelation”, or ”Blessing” - with effects depending on the degree of ”piety”. It could only be used once per dungeon or return. Rumor had it that in dungeons ”closer to the gods”, the ʼMonkʼsʼ ability grew stronger. Clearly...

In dungeons where divine ”agents” directly manifested, like now, the ʼMonkʼ ability would be particularly suitable. Lin Yu thought that except for his second dungeon where gods inexplicably appeared personally... this was probably the ”closest to gods” a dungeon could get. However...

Lin Yu looked at Fish. ”Iʼd like to recommend choosing ʼMonkʼ, but... can you perform a ʼpious prayerʼ?” he asked seriously.

Fish met his gaze, and for the first time, the perpetually cocky blonde-haired girl showed an expression of frustration. ”Honestly, Iʼve had ʼMonkʼ before... and only got about 15 seconds of sensory enhancement blessing.”

The ʼMonkʼsʼ ”Blessing” granted temporary physical enhancement. Even knowing Fishʼs temperament, Lin Yu couldnʼt help but be surprised. ”15 seconds?!” According to forum data Lin Yu had seen, even in unfavorable conditions with bad luck, a ʼMonkʼ should receive at least 10 minutes of blessing duration.

Hearing Lin Yuʼs reaction, Fish turned her head away irritably. ”Iʼm not some god-babbling zealot like you... Iʼm an atheist materialist, okay? I genuinely canʼt believe in this stuff!”

Before Lin Yu could respond, Phantom interjected: ”Surviving over a year in the Death Game while still claiming to be a materialist makes you some kind of miracle yourself. Why donʼt you ask that octopus over there what the banquet hostʼs name is?”

Fish glared at him, looking even more annoyed. ”Hah? Of course I know these ʼgodsʼ exist! But theyʼre nothing like the deities religions describe! I just think they might be... whatever, Iʼm not discussing this on their turf.” She waved her hand dismissively.

As Phantom opened his mouth to continue, Li Hua suddenly spoke: ”This is why youʼre on her kill list. You have a way of making everything sound sarcastic.” ”Huh? Do I?” Phantom scratched his head. ”You do,” Even Mosin-Nagant felt compelled to chime in fairly.

Lin Yu understood now. Among higher-tier players, ʼMagicianʼ Phantom was probably known for traits like ”being verbally obnoxious.” Clearing his throat, Lin Yu steered the conversation back on track with Fish.

”Anyway... youʼve explained the reasons yourself, so choosing ʼMonkʼ probably wonʼt work. Therefore, I recommend you choose - ʼStudentʼ.”

Fish scratched her head. ”What? ʼStudentʼ? How would I use that?” Lin Yu pointed at Ka the Octopus. ”Beg him. Ask this Head Chef how to properly enjoy the [Dessert] or find the cards - or at least get some hints.” He said seriously.

Hearing this, Fish looked troubled. ”Ah... that is an idea, but... compared to ʼpious prayerʼ, ʼbeggingʼ isnʼt much easier for me, you know?”
