The Roach God

They came up on the fifty-first day since the column had left the cellar, and Sacha knew something had changed before he cleared the fracture mouth, because the border had moved.

Not much.

Sixty lengths east, along a line that took in a second seep he had judged indefensible and had said so.

He came up into his own territory reading a claim that was not shaped the way he had left it, and had a very specific six seconds of finding out what kind of god he actually was.

She was told to hold, said one part of him.

She was told to decide, said the other.

Vek reported without being asked, which was itself an answer.

The second seep had begun to fail on the ninth day of his absence — silting, not drying, and she had established this by putting two scouts on it for four consecutive nights before doing anything.

On the fourteenth day she had established that the first seep, the one inside the border, drew from the same face and would fail in the same way within a season.

On the eighteenth day she had moved the border.

She laid the whole thing out in the four-mark public grammar plus the drill shorthand, and it took a long time, because she had built the report to be checkable — every observation with its date, every inference marked as an inference.

Sacha had never taught anyone to do that. He had done it in front of them for three months.

And the Mother? he marked, when she had finished.

Nine came. On the day after. Her marks were flat. They stopped at the new line and read it and went away.

They did not object.

They did not talk.

Did you send anything?

I sent the four marks, Vek laid. At the new line. Before they came.

Sacha held on that.

She had moved a border under a dynasty’s outer markers and had, before doing it, gone out and restated in the colony’s public language exactly who was moving and on what terms — so that when nine of them arrived on the following day the thing they read was not an encroachment but a claim that had said what it was doing first.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

He had not taught her that either.

He had done it in front of them, once, on a wall in the wet ground, a month ago.

Why the day before, he marked. Why not after.

After is asking, she laid. Before is telling. Her antennae stayed level. You said the marks were for saying true things. It was true the day before.

Thresh, who had come up the shaft two days behind him and spent the interval doing whatever a beetle does to catch up on the news, offered exactly one observation.

While you were below, it sent, your colony had a problem, and solved it, and did not wait.

I know.

You do not, entirely. The beetle settled its bad side against the brick. The Verge had a god for sixteen years. In sixteen years it never once had a problem that anyone but the god could solve, because nothing was ever allowed to be anyone else’s.

A shift. When he died the colony lasted four days. Not because it was attacked. Because there was nobody in it who had ever finished a thought.

Sacha absorbed that.

And now you are going to tell me what to do about it.

No, Thresh sent. I am going to tell you that you have nineteen days of evidence that your colony survives you, and that this is the single most valuable thing you own, and that you are currently deciding whether to be pleased about it. I would like to be present for the decision.

He took a full day to respond to any of it, which was the hardest day’s work he had done in a season.

Because the decision had been correct.

It had been correct on evidence he hadn’t been present for, arrived at by a method he hadn’t taught explicitly, and executed while accepting a risk — moving a border under a dynasty’s nose — that he wasn’t certain he would have accepted himself.

And it had been made by somebody he had named four days before leaving, who had never in her life held a position of any kind, and who had spent nineteen days running a colony of sixty-one with no way to consult the only other authority it had.

What do I say to that, he thought, and found the answer was not complicated, only difficult.

He laid it at the reporting junction in front of the block, publicly, in the language the whole colony could read.

THE LINE IS CORRECT. IT IS HERS. IT STAYS.

Then he added the second mark, and it cost him more than the first, and it was the one that mattered.

ASK HER, NOT ME, ABOUT WATER.

[Sanctuary: internal structure — differentiating.

Faith: rising.]

Differentiating.

He had never seen that word from the system.

He turned it over for the rest of the evening and eventually arrived at what he thought it meant, and if he was right, it was the single most important thing that had happened to his colony since the spider.

A claim with one authority in it is a shape with one hard point.

A claim with two is a shape with two hard points.

He had been trying, for nineteen days underground, to work out how to make his colony harder to read.

He had just done it by accident, by handing somebody water.

He went and looked that night—properly, with the sense he had come up with and had not yet used on anything.

It was not like seeing.

It was closer to what his antennae did with a draft: a shape arriving as pressure rather than image.

He put it on his own claim, which felt obscurely like something one should not do, and read a structure with two densities where there had been one, and a soft, diffuse spread between them that he eventually recognized as the second seep and the sixty lengths of new ground around it.

Two months ago the Ascension had read him as a single figure:

sixty-one, nine, four, one Verge survivor.

He did not think that reading was available anymore.

Not because he had hidden anything.

Because there was now more than one true answer to the question who runs this, and a reader at four hundred lengths had no way to tell which of them was the one that mattered.
