The Roach God

It found them three days later, and the first warning Sacha had was not a scent or a vibration but Khrr, arriving at the reporting crawl at a pace it never used unless something was genuinely wrong, antennae still full of whatever it had just been near.

The thing dragging itself along the duct’s outer edge was not a rat and not a roach. It was a beetle, longer than Sacha by half again, armor split along one side in a crack that ran nearly the full length of its body, one antenna gone entirely at the root. It moved the way people moved when the only thing still operating was the decision to keep moving — no economy to it, no instinct for cover, just forward, one leg at a time, along an open stretch where anything with an appetite could have taken it at leisure.

And underneath all of that, faint but unmistakable, was the pressure Sacha had felt exactly twice before: another Sanctuary. Guttering, barely holding, but there.

He went out himself, and he did it fast enough that Khrr fell in beside him without being asked and slow enough that four of the heavier-backed roaches had time to fall in behind them both. Whatever this was, it wasn’t a threat in the condition it was in — but not a threat right now and safe were two entirely different assessments, and eleven years of walking onto scenes that looked one way from the street and another way up close had taught him to keep the distinction alive even when everything in front of him looked like a straightforward rescue.

Up close it was worse. The crack in the armor wasn’t a wound from a fall or a predator’s strike; it was too clean along one edge, too ragged along the other, the kind of damage something takes when it’s caught between two forces neither of which was aiming at it specifically. Sacha had seen that pattern before in a different life, on people pulled out of buildings that had come down around them while they were simply standing in the wrong hallway.

What came through the thin channel that had carried the rat’s flat assessment came in fragments this time, scattered by whatever had broken the beetle’s Sanctuary half apart. But the shape was clear enough, and it arrived in pieces Sacha’s mind assembled the way he used to assemble a history out of a patient too far gone to give him a straight answer.

A colony. Three sectors over — the distance meant nothing to him yet, but the weight the beetle put on it suggested far. Bigger and older than his own by a margin the fragments made humiliating. And then two other presences, both enormous by the standards of anything Sacha had personally met, pressing against each other over ground the beetle’s people had happened to be standing on.

Not attacked, he understood, sorting the pieces. Not targeted. Just in the way.

[Query: intent, received. Petitioner: unaffiliated Divine Creature, severely weakened.]

Not my war, Sacha thought immediately, and then deliberately did not act on that thought, because it was true and it was also not the whole of the situation. He was not going to march sixty roaches across three sectors into a fight between two powers he had no way to measure, over ground he’d never seen, for a colony that no longer existed. That much was simple arithmetic and he trusted it.

This novel’s true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

But a beetle in front of him, alone, asking for nothing yet except to not die in the next hour, was a different question with a different answer, and it was exactly the kind of question his old life had never once let him walk away from cleanly.

He thought about the demolition date scratched into concrete two days’ travel from where he stood, still unspoken to anyone but himself. He thought about a colony that was going to need every advantage it could get before that deadline arrived, and about the fact that the creature in front of him had survived a war he hadn’t, and carried in its damaged head a map of a world he still had almost no picture of.

He would have made the same call without any of that. He knew it, and he let himself know it, because a man who could only justify decency by its usefulness had already lost something worth more than a territory.

Shelter, while you heal, he sent back, as clearly as he could shape it. Not command. Not a cage. Information, when you’re able, and after that — whatever you decide you want to be to us.

It wasn’t the safest choice available. A weakened stranger could be exactly what it appeared to be, or it could be the first thread of a problem he wouldn’t recognize until it already had hooks in the colony’s soft parts. He was aware of that. He’d been aware of it the entire walk out.

But he’d learned, in two months of borders he hadn’t drawn and ducts he hadn’t asked for, that the world did not sort itself neatly into threats and allies in advance for anyone’s convenience. You found out by spending something first. Sometimes what you spent was wasted. That was the price of ever finding out anything at all.

The beetle didn’t answer in words, couldn’t yet. It simply stopped dragging itself forward and stayed where it was, which Sacha chose to read, for the moment, as trust it hadn’t consciously decided to give.

Getting it home was its own small lesson in what sixty roaches could and couldn’t do. Carrying it was never on the table; the beetle outweighed a full-grown roach by a margin that made the idea laughable, and four of them straining against its cracked shell shifted it perhaps a body-length before Sacha called them off. So he did what he’d have done at a wreck too heavy to lift with the crew on hand: stopped trying to move the patient, and moved everything else instead. Water first, ferried on soaked scraps of insulation. Then food. Then more water, through the night and into the next day, until the beetle could take its own weight again.

From there it walked — badly, resting every few feet, with a rotating escort clearing debris ahead of it and Sacha beside its head the whole way, doing the one thing he’d always been good at even before any of this: keeping something conscious and oriented by refusing to stop talking to it, in whatever language was available. It took the better part of two days to cover ground a healthy scout crossed in an hour.

The colony’s reaction, when they arrived, was the part he hadn’t planned for. Sixty-odd roaches who had spent their entire short lives learning that anything larger than themselves was a thing to be escaped did not simply accept a wounded beetle in the storage crawl on the strength of Sacha’s say-so. It took two full days of him physically standing near it, sleeping near it, eating near it, before the foraging lines stopped bending around that section of the duct.

[Territory: unchanged. Faith: unaffected. Sanctuary: extended shelter to non-affiliated spark.]

No progress toward the next echelon in that. Nothing the ladder cared about at all — a flat, uninterested silence from a system that had been perfectly willing to reward him for killing a spider.

Sacha, settling in beside a stranger’s cracked armor for what he expected to be a long few days, found that he minded less than he’d expected to. Some decisions weren’t supposed to be about the climb.
