The Roach God

Thresh talked more freely once it stopped being a patient, and Sacha learned quickly that the difference between the two states wasn’t physical. It was permission. A creature being kept alive answers questions. A creature that has decided to stay starts asking them.

The recovery itself had been slow enough to teach him things.

The cracked armor along Thresh’s left side didn’t heal so much as harden badly, sealing into a ridge that would never sit flush again; the missing antenna didn’t regrow at all. Sacha watched it relearn its own balance over thirteen days, compensating for a sensory field that now had a blind quadrant, and recognized the process from a hundred discharge visits in his old life — the specific, unglamorous work of a body deciding what it was going to be permanently. Thresh never once acted as though this were a tragedy. It adjusted, tested, adjusted again, and got on with it, and something in that flat practicality made Sacha like it a great deal more than gratitude would have.

The first real question came on the fourth evening at the reporting crawl, through the thin channel, as a single compressed impression that took him a while to unfold: why did you not take me.

He understood the shape of it before the words resolved. Not why did you save me — Thresh had apparently already worked that out, or decided it didn’t need working out. Take. A weakened spark, sheltering inside a stronger one’s Sanctuary, with no claim of its own and no strength to hold one if it had.

Sacha sent back the only honest answer available: that he didn’t know what that meant.

The beetle’s surprise came down the channel like a change in air pressure — a full second of nothing, the mental equivalent of a person turning to look at you properly for the first time. What followed was fragmentary, and Sacha had to assemble it across most of an hour, but the substance was clear enough. A spark could be absorbed. Not killed — taken, claim and Faith and accumulated progress folded whole into another’s Sanctuary, the way a small account gets rolled into a larger one. It was, Thresh conveyed, entirely ordinary. It was what happened to the weak ones. It was, in fact, roughly what Thresh had expected to happen the moment it realized whose ground it had collapsed on.

Sacha filed that, immediately and carefully, in the growing folder of things about this world he’d been fortunate to remain ignorant of. He’d been operating for two months on the assumption that the worst another spark could do to him was kill him.

You’d have gotten a rung out of me, Thresh sent, and there was something in it that wasn’t quite bitterness. Small one. But free.

I’d have gotten a rung and no beetle, Sacha sent back. I need the beetle more.

That was true, and it was also not the whole truth, and he suspected the channel carried the gap between the two more clearly than he’d have liked. He let it stand. A working relationship built on a beetle believing him more calculating than he actually was seemed likelier to survive contact with a bad week than one built on being thought kind. He’d worked with enough people who mistook softness for weakness to know which misunderstanding was cheaper to maintain.

What Thresh had, once it began drawing rather than merely remembering, was the single most valuable object Sacha had encountered since waking up in a wall.

It laid the map out over three nights, and the method was itself worth watching: scratched lines for structure, scent-marks for territory, and — for anything it wasn’t certain about — a deliberate smear it refused to firm up no matter how many times Sacha pressed. That refusal impressed him more than the map did. He’d met plenty of people who’d rather give a confident wrong answer than an honest blank, and none of them had ever been worth much on a bad night.

Within the first ten minutes he understood that his mental picture of the world had been roughly the size of a bathroom and about as accurate. The building he’d spent two months conquering was one structure in a row of them. The row sat on a foundation network that ran continuous beneath all of it — old, cracked, pre-dating whatever had been built on top. The deep ground he’d bled eight roaches for wasn’t a refuge at the bottom of his world.

It was an on-ramp.

He made Thresh walk him through the implications twice, because the first time he didn’t trust himself to have understood correctly. If the foundation ran continuous, then the demolition of one structure didn’t end the network — it opened a hole in it. And more urgently: every route worth having ran through ground he’d never seen, held by things he’d never met, and he’d spent two months treating a bathroom-sized crawlspace as the entire theater of war.

Here, Thresh marked, hive. A wide scrape three structures east, and everything around it left deliberately blank in a way that told Sacha more than detail would have. When he pushed, the answer came back simple and unembarrassed: I never went closer. The ones who went closer did not describe it.

Here — a second mark, tighter, nearer, two structures west — the new one. The hungry one.

This one Thresh could describe, and did, at length: a colony expanding on a schedule rather than an appetite, taking ground in increments precisely large enough to provoke a response and precisely small enough not to provoke a decisive one. Sacha listened to that and felt a cold flicker of professional recognition.

Whoever ran that colony was not a beast. It was someone running a campaign.

And between the two marks, dead center, the stretch of contested ground that had cost Thresh its colony, its armor, and one antenna.

Sacha studied the space between them. It sat squarely across the most direct route out of Sector 4.

How long has it been contested?

Long, Thresh sent. Before me. Before my colony. Both sides feed on the corridor. Neither holds it.

And nothing small survives in it.

Nothing small is noticed in it. And then, after a silence just long enough to be deliberate, something the channel carried with unmistakable precision — the first joke Sacha had ever received from a non-human, and a genuinely good one, because it doubled as a threat assessment: You are very small.

Sacha worked at that for the rest of the night after Thresh had gone to rest, staring at three nights of scratched lines, and understood that he’d just been handed both his only viable route out and the single most dangerous place in the known world, and that they were the same place.
