The Roach God

The lure took longer to build than the fight itself, and Sacha was grateful for that, because it meant most of the risk lived in the preparation instead of in the moment where getting it wrong produced more names like Runner’s.

The idea had been sitting in front of him for two months disguised as scenery. The old wiring threading the duct had been background since the day they claimed it — warmth, a landmark, a low steady hum his antennae could feel from ten feet out. It took the failure in the warren to make him actually look at it, because failure has a way of stripping the decoration off things you’ve stopped noticing.

Vibration was the one language everything down here spoke fluently. The thing in the warren hunted in absolute dark, in a space with no sightlines; whatever it was doing to find prey, it was doing by feel. And the same vibration that had nearly gotten his scouts killed a dozen times could, in principle, be produced on purpose.

It took the Cerci line four days to learn it. Badly at first — the early attempts were rhythmic in a way nothing wounded has ever been, and Sacha made them start over three times, because a lure that reads as artificial doesn’t just fail, it teaches the target what a trap feels like. What they eventually got right was the stumble: the uneven, faltering, restarting drag of something small that is still moving only because it hasn’t finished dying yet.

The exact signature, he thought grimly, that any predator in the world recognises as easy.

He staged it at the gap the cracked concrete had already built for him, laid a false trail running into it, and pulled every roach back from the warren’s actual mouth entirely. No advance into its territory this time. Not one body across that line.

Let it come to ground he had chosen.

Then came the part nobody writes about: waiting.

Two full days of it. Sixty-odd roaches holding position in cold, damp dark, the lure repeating on a patient loop, nothing happening, discipline eroding by increments the way discipline always does when the plan requires people to do nothing for longer than they think is reasonable. Sacha spent most of it moving between positions, doing the least strategic and most necessary work available to him — being visibly present, being visibly unhurried, letting sixty small nervous systems borrow calm from a god who was not, personally, feeling especially calm.

On the second night, the vibration answered.

It came fast, and it came committed — the specific, unhesitating rush of something certain it has found food and equally certain nothing in its own territory has ever made that a bad assumption. It hit the gap at full speed.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it’s taken without the author’s consent. Report it.

And the gap, barely wide enough for two roaches abreast, gave it nowhere at all to put its width or its speed.

The fight was still hard. Sacha wants to be clear about that with himself, then and afterward: a good plan does not make a fight cheap, it only makes the cost survivable. The thing was strong, and trapped, and being trapped made it worse rather than better. It took the Carapace line minutes that felt considerably longer to do the work, with Cerci cycling in and out along the flanks and Unbreaking absorbing what came through — and it cost two more.

Both Unbreaking. Both holding exactly the position their lineage had grown itself to hold, doing the correct thing, for the correct reason, and paying for it — which never once stopped being a real cost no matter how many times the arithmetic said it was the right trade.

He made himself watch all of it. That was a rule he’d set for himself after the warren and intended to keep: if he was going to be the one who decided where his people stood, he was going to be the one who saw what standing there did to them. Delegating the plan was leadership. Delegating the watching was something else.

When it finally stopped moving, wedged half into a gap it had never expected to find itself unable to reverse out of, Sacha understood the difference between the two attempts in his body before the bracketed text ever confirmed it.

The first time, he had fought an enemy. The second time, he had fought a situation.

[Territory: deep ground claimed. Divine Creature — Echelon 3 of 9.]

Three.

He let himself feel precisely what that deserved, which was not triumph. It was closer to the worn, unglamorous satisfaction of a debt finally paid down after weeks of watching it grow: relief with a great deal of arithmetic attached.

Two attempts. Eight dead. Nine weeks since the spider. One rung.

He made himself hold that math rather than look away from it, and he made sure the colony saw him holding it, because a people who forget what their ground cost are a people who will spend the next piece of it carelessly.

And there was one more thing in the numbers, quieter than the rest, that he didn’t share with anyone.

The lure had worked because he’d spent two months walking past a humming wire without thinking about it. The gap had worked because a construction crew had poured concrete badly, decades before he was born, and the building had cracked along a line nobody designed. He had not been clever, in the end. He had been observant, and lucky, and willing to look again at things he’d already decided were scenery.

That wasn’t a strategy he could count on repeating. Somewhere ahead of him were problems that would not happen to have a chokepoint lying around unused, and he had no idea yet what he was supposed to do about those.

There was also the arithmetic, which he did that night and then wished he hadn’t.

Eight dead, across two attempts, for one stretch of cellar. Six from the first, two from the second. The second attempt had been better in every measurable way — better intelligence, better ground, better use of what his lineages actually were — and it had still cost two, and the two had died in the rear position of a chokepoint that had worked exactly as designed.

That was the part he couldn’t file away neatly. The failure had killed six because he’d been wrong. The success had killed two because he’d been right. There was no version of this where the number was zero, and he had been quietly, stupidly carrying the assumption that a good enough plan eventually got you to zero.

Nobody had ever told him that in eleven years, either. He’d just never had to hold the whole ledger himself before.
