The Roach God

He did the boring option first, and made himself do it thoroughly, because the entire point of writing map the southern arc before dismissing it on a list was to stop himself from doing what he already wanted to do.

The eastern corridor was the interesting road.

It had a war on it.

It had a story attached, drawn over three nights by a beetle who had survived that story badly.

Which was exactly why Sacha intended to walk the dull road first and give it every honest chance to be the answer.

Six scouts, four nights. He went on two of the four runs himself and set a pace slow enough that the Cerci line spent both of them visibly wanting to be somewhere else.

The arc curved south and west beneath three structures before bending back toward open foundation, and by every measure that showed up early it was the safer road. No scent-marked territory.

No patrol rhythm.

No claim-scent at all, old or new, along its entire length.

That last part was what bothered him.

Two months down here had taught him that unclaimed ground stayed unclaimed for a reason, and that finding out the reason before you moved your nursery through it was not optional.

He found it on the third night.

The southern arc was dry — not poor, dry, in the specific way that mattered to sixty roaches with young. No water. No organic matter. No seepage, no rot, no route to any of it. Packed fill and sealed footing the whole way, a clean sterile channel through material that had never decomposed and never would. Nothing had claimed it because there was nothing here to claim.

He walked the last stretch twice looking for a break in that assessment. A crack in the footing. A damp patch. Anything that would let him argue the arc into viability, because the alternative had a war on it.

Nothing.

Sixty roaches moving that distance without water would arrive with the nursery dead and the adults too weak to hold whatever they found.

Arriving somewhere as a starving colony that couldn’t defend itself wasn’t surviving the demolition.

It was dying somewhere else, later, having spent everything to get there.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author’s consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

So he wrote it off on the fourth night, cleanly, instead of leaving it standing because its existence was comforting. That was harder than it sounded. A bad option you haven’t formally eliminated still works as a floor under your thinking, and he could feel precisely how much he wanted to keep that floor.

Khrr had been on both of the runs Sacha led, and on the two he didn’t.

It had no word for the arc. Words were not the shape its thinking took. What it had, walking that dry channel a third time while the god slept, was a growing pressure that came from a place it could not name and would not have been able to describe if it had been given a hundred years and a mouth to do it with.

The pressure was this: the god checked things.

Khrr had watched him check the arc four times. Had watched him check the drill against empty duct until the drill was boring. Had watched him check the rat patrol’s behaviour for two days before walking out onto open pipe to meet it. The god checked things the way water found the bottom of a room — constantly, without effort, as a property rather than a decision.

And Khrr had noticed something else, which was that the god did not check people.

He had never once checked what Khrr wanted. He had checked whether Khrr could hold a line, could lead a foraging route, could route a nursery convoy around groundwater. All of which Khrr could. None of which was the question.

It was not resentment.

Khrr did not have the equipment for resentment, or thought it didn’t.

It was closer to the thing a body does when it has been holding a weight for a long time and only notices the weight when someone finally offers to take it — which nobody had.

The plan for the crossing had already been finished in Khrr’s head for six days by the time Sacha asked the question that let it be shown. Khrr had written itself into the first group at the start, not the end. Not as sacrifice, which was a shape Khrr understood was available and had rejected.

As the only way it could think of to be asked.

It’s not a route, Sacha told Thresh that night, back at the reporting crawl. It’s a way to die slower and further from home.

The beetle received that without comment for a moment.

Then:

You checked anyway.

I checked anyway.

Four nights.

The one before you did not check.

Sacha went still.

Thresh had been building toward this since the map — he understood that the instant it landed, the way you understand that ten minutes of small talk has been a runway toward one real question.

The one before you, Thresh went on, was told there was a corridor, and a hive, and a hungry one. And chose the corridor. Because it was short. The channel went quiet, and then carried something Sacha could not name precisely and did not need to. We were four hundred.

He didn’t answer that.

There was nothing to say to it that wouldn’t sound like a promise, and he wasn’t in the business of promising anything about a crossing he hadn’t scouted.

He stayed at the crawl a while instead, in the dark, next to a beetle that had just told him exactly what it was afraid of without once using the word.

Later, walking back toward the deep ground, he passed Khrr on the reporting line and stopped, without any clear idea why he’d stopped.

Khrr waited.

Sacha stood there a moment longer, feeling the edge of something he could see the shape of and not the substance — the sense of a question he was supposed to be asking and could neither identify nor form.

Then a scout came through with the night’s route report, and the moment closed, and he went on.

Behind him, Khrr held position on the line for a long time after he’d gone.

He left for the corridor two days later.
