The Roach God

The demolition date gave him a deadline he couldn’t negotiate with and almost nothing else. No way to know how far the wrecking crew’s reach would extend. No guarantee that the duct — warm, defensible, expensive to claim — counted as inside or outside whatever Sector 4 actually meant to the people who’d written it.

Waiting to find out wasn’t a plan. He needed ground the demolition couldn’t reach, and the only honest way to find it was to go looking, the same unglamorous way he’d found everything else worth having since the water heater.

He took a wider party than any scouting run before it: six from Cerci for speed and early warning, four Carapace for anything the speed couldn’t outrun, Khrr leading the formation. He left the bulk of the colony under the Essaim lines’ care and — this was the part that took him a full night to actually decide — did not leave instructions for every contingency he could imagine.

That was deliberate.

A colony that could only function while he was standing in it wasn’t a colony, it was an extension of him, and he’d watched enough departments collapse the week their best doctor left to know exactly how that story ended. If the Essaim lines couldn’t run the nest for a week without him, better to find that out now, over a scouting trip, than during something that mattered more.

No bracketed text existed to measure that decision. He counted it as progress anyway.

They travelled for three days, working downward wherever the concrete allowed it, and Sacha spent most of that time doing something he’d had no opportunity to do since waking up in this body: looking at the world without an immediate problem in front of him.

It was bigger than he’d let himself picture. The building’s underside was not a place — it was a geography, with weather of its own, currents of warm air off buried pipes and cold pockets where groundwater seeped, whole regions defined by nothing more than which direction the drafts ran. He’d been running a colony inside a crack in the wall of something enormous, and he’d been doing it with the confidence of a man who thought he’d seen the map.

They found the deep ground on the third day, well past anything Thresh’s fragmented impressions had covered.

It ran below the building’s actual basement: a stretch of original foundation, poured long enough ago that the concrete had cracked into a loose three-dimensional network of gaps and channels, cool and damp and threaded with condensation. Harder going than the duct. Colder. Nothing about it was comfortable.

But structurally — as far as a career of walking into damaged buildings and a lifetime of paying attention to load-bearing walls could tell him — it was exactly the kind of ground that survives when everything built on top of it comes down. Too deep for a crew working from street level to bother with. Too structural to remove without taking the whole plot with it.

It was, in other words, the answer. Sacha allowed himself perhaps four seconds of relief.

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Then Khrr stopped moving.

The scent reached Sacha a moment later, and the first thing he noticed about it was what it wasn’t. The rats had left borders — deliberate, maintained, legible, a colony taking the trouble to communicate. There was nothing like that here.

There was just presence. Old, heavy, distributed through the whole space in the way a smell settles into a room nobody has opened in years. Something down here had stopped bothering to mark territory at all, which meant either that it had nothing to defend, or that it had stopped expecting anything to challenge it.

The tracks settled the question. Segmented, wide-set, pressed deep into the damp grit — and beside them, running parallel for a long stretch before ending abruptly, the drag-marks of something that had not wanted to go where it was going.

[Rival presence detected: unaligned. Sanctuary signature: absent.]

No spark. Nothing sitting on the ladder beside him, nothing to bargain with the way he’d bargained with the rat. Just an animal — old, large, and successful enough to have emptied out an entire stretch of prime, demolition-proof ground without ever needing to defend it, because nothing down here had survived long enough to contest it.

Sacha stood at the edge of it for a long moment, and did the arithmetic he’d been avoiding.

Behind him: a colony of sixty-odd in a duct that might not exist in a month. Beside him: the only ground he’d found that would still be here afterward. In front of him: the reason it was empty.

There was no version of this where he got the third thing without going through the second.

This is the war worth having, he thought — not because it was safe, and not because he wanted it, but because every other option on the board ended with a wrecking ball and sixty roaches in a duct.

He stayed at the mouth of the warren a long time before turning back, doing the thing he’d learned to do at any scene worth respecting: standing still until the details arrived on their own.

They arrived.

The floor of the near chamber was scattered with shell fragments, none of them fresh, all of them stripped clean — not gnawed, stripped, with an efficiency that suggested a feeder that didn’t waste effort.

There were no bones larger than a roach’s leg anywhere in view, so either nothing large came down here, or nothing large came back out. The air moved steadily from the interior toward the gap he was standing in, so the warren connected to something bigger, somewhere, and he had no idea what.

And there was no scent-border.

That was the detail that finally settled it in his stomach.

The rats had marked a line because the rats expected to be tested.

Whatever lived down here had stopped marking anything at all, the way you stop locking a door in a house nobody else has ever entered.

It doesn’t defend the ground, he thought. It just eats whatever walks in. It’s never needed a second strategy.

He weighed a fight he hadn’t chosen against a deadline he couldn’t negotiate with, and filed the absent border away carefully, the way he filed anything that didn’t fit a pattern he already trusted. An enemy that bothered to mark a line was an enemy that still expected to be tested. He suspected, standing there, that the ones who’d stopped marking anything at all were the ones actually worth losing sleep over — and that he would not always have the luxury of finding out why, before he was already standing in the middle of it.

He sent Khrr back for the rest of the party he’d need, and started building, right there in the dark, the only kind of plan that had ever actually worked for him.

Not a bet this time.

Not nerve.

A plan built the slow way, out of everything four lineages and two months of patient, unglamorous work had taught him how to do.

It was the best plan he had ever made.

It had exactly one flaw, and he would not find it until the flaw found him first.
