The Roach God

The clarity came a few days after the rat, without warning, the way a radio signal sometimes resolves out of static once you’re finally close enough to the tower. Sacha had gotten used to the bracketed text arriving thin and cryptic, a diagnosis with half the chart missing. This time it arrived whole.

[Sanctuary stability sufficient. Detail unlocked: Rank structure.]

[Divine Creature — Echelon 1 of 9. Progress toward Echelon 2: moderate.]

So that was what unranked had actually meant, this whole time — not zero, not nothing, just unmeasured. The spider, the duct, the rat’s wary peace: all of it had been quietly building toward this first real rung while the interface stayed too thin to show him the numbers. He’d been climbing in the dark without knowing there was a ladder at all.

Echelon, Sacha thought, turning the word over.

Not a straight climb after all — a ladder inside the ladder. He sat with it a long while, doing the kind of mental arithmetic he used to do at triage, working out not what he wanted the numbers to mean but what they actually did. Six ranks between him and whatever the Roach God was ultimately going to mean, and now nine steps inside each one of them. Fifty-four rungs, at minimum, standing between unranked bug in a wall and whatever power had been big enough to write the rules he was now living inside of.

He felt the size of that number and made himself set it down rather than carry it around. Eleven years in an ambulance had taught him that a goal that big was useless as a daily target — nobody survives a shift by staring at the whole rest of their career. You survived it one call at a time. He’d survive this one echelon at a time, and the spider and the rat, looking back, had clearly bought him the first one between them. Small. Slow. Fine. He hadn’t expected fast, and the two near-disasters behind him had cured him of wanting it.

What Echelon 1 had actually given him, concretely, was easy enough to test: a fractional gain in raw strength, the carapace along his back a shade denser than it had been in the crawlspace, his reaction to vibration a beat faster than before. Nothing dramatic. The kind of difference you’d only notice if you were the one measuring it, which, being a doctor by training even now, he was.

Two other things resolved out of the static that week, and both mattered more than the rung count.

The first was time. He’d done the arithmetic on his own body in the crawlspace and hated the answer: an ordinary roach gets a year at the outside, and he’d already burned two months of it. But the roaches born since the spider were dying on schedule while he wasn’t aging at all — no stiffness in the joints, no dulling of the antennae, nothing. Whatever the spark had done to him, it had unhooked him from the clock his species ran on and hooked him to something else instead. He tested the edges of it as best he could and arrived at a working theory he trusted the way he’d once trusted a diagnosis of exclusion: a Divine Creature aged with its Sanctuary, not with its flesh. Lose the claim, and the clock presumably came back. Khrr, sharing that same claim, was on the same borrowed schedule. It was a reprieve, not a gift — and he noted, with the part of him that never stopped reading a situation for its downside, that it also meant every rival out there had all the time in the world too.

The second was subtler, and he’d been half-seeing it for weeks without naming it: his roaches were getting smarter. Not the drifting lineages — the ordinary ones, the sixty. A roach that had needed forty repetitions to learn a marked spot in the first week now needed twelve. Foragers held a route in memory across three days instead of forgetting it overnight. He’d assumed he was simply getting better at teaching. Sitting with the unlocked rank structure, he stopped believing that. Faith didn’t only flow one direction. Sixty small engines pouring belief into him were also, apparently, drawing something back down the same channel — cognition thin enough that no single roach would ever hold a conversation, thick enough that the impossible tactics he’d been drilling into them had stopped being impossible somewhere around week three. They’re not smart, he thought carefully, unwilling to overstate it even privately. They’re just no longer as stupid as biology built them to be. There’s a difference, and the day I forget it, I’ll design a plan that gets all of them killed.

Rank was not, he decided after that, going to be the thing he spent the next stretch of time chasing directly. Faith accumulated whether he chased it or not, as a side effect of everything else going right — and everything else going right meant a colony that could actually survive being more than forty bodies crammed behind a water heater. So he turned his attention, deliberately, away from himself and onto the tribe, and let the weeks after the rat’s border settle into a rhythm he hadn’t had the luxury of before: build, watch, adjust, repeat.

The lineages the notice had hinted at from the very start weren’t handed down from above like a class selection screen. Sacha watched them emerge, slow and organic, out of what each roach actually did all day. The ones who spent their lives running the exposed foraging routes, dodging drafts and shadows, molted leaner and quicker than the rest — not overnight, but across two, three generations, a visible drift toward speed that he started quietly encouraging by putting the fastest scouts on the riskiest routes and letting biology do the rest. The ones who held the defensive line at the drainpipe mouth, taking the odd glancing hit that would have flattened a forager, came out of their molts a little thicker across the back each time. He didn’t force any of it. He noticed it, and then he arranged the work so that the roaches already leaning that way kept leaning that way, the same patient logic he’d have used shaping a training rotation for new medics — you don’t fight a person’s instincts, you find the instinct and point it somewhere useful.

[Bloodline drift detected: Lineage Cerci, emerging. Lineage Carapace, emerging.]

Two lineages, not fully formed yet, barely more than a tendency in the way certain roaches grew — but real, and his, in a way the rest of the world hadn’t handed him. He caught himself feeling something close to pride watching a scout he’d once trained by hand outrun a vibration that would have caught it flat a month earlier, and let himself have that too. A man who couldn’t feel proud of small, honest progress had no business trying to build something out of forty bugs and a dead water heater.

The discovery that ended the week wasn’t a threat, not exactly — Khrr brought it back the way it had brought back the rat border, as behavior rather than words, leading a small party out past the edge of the claimed hunting ground toward a gap in the foundation none of them had ever bothered mapping. On the other side was space Sacha hadn’t known existed: a long-abandoned utility duct, dry, warm, threaded through with old wiring that gave off a low, steady hum his antennae could feel from ten feet away, and — more usefully — untouched, unclaimed, undefended by anything with a Sanctuary of its own.

It wasn’t a war. It wasn’t even a negotiation. It was just ground nobody else wanted badly enough to guard, and Sacha understood, standing at the mouth of it with Khrr beside him, that this was probably going to be most of what building a real territory actually looked like — not spiders and rats and dramatic confrontations, but a hundred small, patient claims like this one, made quietly, long before anyone powerful enough to contest them ever noticed they were gone.

[Territory: expanded. Divine Creature — Echelon 1 of 9.

Progress toward Echelon 2: significant.]

Not there yet.

Close, though, and closer for the right reasons — not one big gamble, but a month of unglamorous, patient work finally adding up.

Sacha filed that away as a lesson worth keeping: the spider had taught him what a bet could buy him.

The duct was teaching him what patience could buy him instead, and he suspected he was going to need a great deal more of the second than the first before this was over.
