The Roach God

They took him in, and it took Sacha most of a day to stop reacting to it as captivity.

Nobody restrained anyone.

The five who had come down with him were housed — that was the only word for it — in a side chamber with water, and nobody stood over them, and the plug behind them was left drawn back.

He tested that on the second hour by walking out to it and standing there. Nothing objected.

Nothing followed.

Which, he understood eventually, was considerably more sophisticated than a guard would have been.

A locked door tells you what your hosts fear.

An open one tells you nothing at all.

The settlement below was smaller than the city above, and it was alive.

Perhaps two hundred of them.

He counted by blocks, then stopped, because the counting was the wrong instinct—he had come down here with a headcount reflex built in a cellar, and what he was standing in was not a colony in his sense.

There were no lines.

No foraging rotation he could identify, no watch pattern, nothing that resembled the machinery he had spent three months constructing.

Instead there was work: two roaches widening a passage, four hauling substrate, six doing something incomprehensible to a wall with an apparent schedule and no supervision.

The children were what finally reoriented him.

There were not many.

He found the nursery on the second day — unguarded, in the middle of the settlement rather than set back from the approaches, which was the exact inverse of everything he had built — and counted thirteen young in a population of two hundred.

Thirteen.

In a species that could have produced two hundred more from four healthy females in a season.

He did the arithmetic and did not like the result.

That was not a population managing its food supply.

That was not a cap like the one he had imposed under the water heater, a decision made against biology that could be lifted the day the larder allowed.

That was a population that had stopped being able to.

And there was no god.

He checked, repeatedly, in every way available to him.

There was no Sanctuary pressure anywhere in the settlement.

The author’s narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

There was no claim on this ground.

Two hundred organized, literate, tool-using roaches were living in worked stone, and not one of them was standing inside anybody’s divine territory, and by every rule Sacha had learned in three months that was not supposed to be possible.

The pale one — he never got a name and eventually understood there might not be one — spent five days teaching him to read.

It was not generous. Sacha worked that out fast and found he respected it more for that. He was being taught the minimum grammar required to be interrogated properly, by a society that had encountered something it did not understand and was doing the necessary work to understand it, and the fact that the process felt like education was incidental.

The grammar was extraordinary.

It was topological, exactly as the wall had suggested — its base units were not nouns and verbs but connections, widths, passabilities, and everything else in the language was built on top of that by analogy.

Trust was a passage you had walked more than once.

Threat was a narrowing you could not see past.

Death was a plug.

By the fourth day he could ask a question.

On the fifth, he asked the one he had come down with.

Why did you take mine.

The answer took a long time to assemble, and when he had it, it was not what he had prepared for.

Because it wrote.

He got the rest over the next two days, in pieces, and it reorganized everything.

They had watched the surface for a very long time.

Not constantly — there were three places where the network came close enough to read the ground above, and they checked them on a cycle measured in seasons rather than days, and had done so for longer than their own records covered.

What they were watching for was other roaches.

Specifically:

other roaches that wrote.

Why, Sacha asked, and the reply was the flat structural kind their grammar produced naturally.

Because a thing that writes has been taught. A thing that has been taught has a teacher.

Sacha weighed that a while, and the part that reached him was not the logic.

It was that the logic was good.

He had spent three months treating his own species’ apparent stupidity as a fact of the world, and had built a private grammar with one exceptional individual and never once considered what it would look like from outside — and two hundred pale strangers had read one border in an invented script and drawn precisely the correct conclusion from it in a single night.

They’re not primitives hiding in a hole, he thought. They’re the ones who worked it out first.

And there it was.

They were not looking for company.

They were looking for gods — for evidence that another population of their species had been claimed by something.

Khrr had spent nine nights laying a legible border in a private grammar forty lengths from a fracture mouth, the first of any of them to check in a season, and had thereby announced, in the clearest way available, that somewhere nearby there was a roach colony with a god in it.

They had come up and taken it to find out whose.

And what happens, Sacha asked, on the seventh day, when you find one?

The pale one did not answer immediately.

It walked him instead—two hundred lengths, down a worked passage he had not been shown before, to a chamber whose entire far wall was covered in dense topological script from floor to ceiling.

It was not a map. Sacha had enough grammar by then to see that much.

It was a list.

What is this.

Every claim we have found, the pale one marked. Since we came down.

Sacha read what he could.

He could not manage most of it.

He could manage the structure: blocks—dozens of blocks —each a short entry, and each entry ending in the same closing mark.

He knew that mark. It was on the wall in the city upstairs, struck through three descent points, laid in a hurry by somebody who had run out of time.

What does this mean, he asked, and pointed at it, and already knew.

Plug, the pale one marked. Ended. Closed.

All of them?

All of them.

The enormous antennae swept once.

Every roach colony that has been claimed by a god, that we have found, in all the time we have been below.

It laid the next part slowly, and Sacha understood that he was being told the central fact of an entire civilization. Claimed things are seen. Seen things are taken. We came down and we stopped claiming, and we are the only ones left.
