The Roach God

With the duct secured, Sacha let himself do something he hadn’t had room for since the crawlspace: slow down and actually look at what he was building instead of just reacting to whatever threatened it. The colony was pushing past sixty now, counting the roaches born since the spider — and sixty was, he was well aware, a scandalously small number for what his species was physically capable of producing in two months.

It was small because he was keeping it small, and because the ground wouldn’t have allowed anything else regardless. A single healthy female could have given him two hundred descendants by now; four of them could have given him a thousand. What none of them could give him was food. The crawlspace and the duct together supported a population in the low hundreds at the absolute ceiling, and a colony that outgrew its larder didn’t become powerful — it became a starving mass that ate its own young and then attracted every predator within smelling distance of the die-off. Worse, the Faith arithmetic he’d worked out with the rank structure had a cruel edge to it: a hungry, frightened subject produced almost nothing. Sixty roaches that were fed, organized, and confident poured more into the Sanctuary than three hundred desperate ones would have.

So he’d made a decision weeks ago that no god in any story he’d ever read would have made, and made it the way he used to ration supplies on a long shift: he capped the nursery. Deliberately. Enough eggs to replace losses and grow slowly against what the territory could actually feed, and not one more until there was somewhere for them to live. It felt wrong every time he did it. He did it anyway, and told himself that a small colony that survived the winter beat a huge one that didn’t — and that the day he claimed real ground, the cap came off and his species’ terrifying fecundity stopped being a liability and started being the single greatest advantage he had.

Sixty bodies with no real organization was still just a bigger, slower version of the problem he’d started with. So he spent a stretch of days that felt almost luxurious doing the least dramatic work imaginable — walking the whole claimed territory end to end with Khrr, deciding where things actually belonged.

The old water heater gap became a nursery in truth rather than just in habit, set back from every entrance, guarded on a rotation instead of by accident. The duct’s warm stretch near the humming wires became food storage, dry and defensible. A narrower crawl between the two became the place scouts reported to before heading anywhere, instead of just wherever they happened to bump into Sacha. He drew the lines the way he used to sketch a triage layout on the back of a call sheet — not because anyone had told him to, but because a system nobody had to think about was a system that held up on the worst night instead of just the easy ones.

It wasn’t glamorous work, and some of it took longer than it should have precisely because there was no threat forcing the pace. He spent one entire day just watching which routes the foragers actually used versus which ones he’d assumed they’d use, and adjusted the nursery’s guarded perimeter twice before it finally matched the traffic instead of fighting it. None of it required Faith or a bracketed notice to accomplish. It required the same unglamorous logistics work he’d once watched senior paramedics do — the ones who never looked frantic on a bad night because the systems around them had already absorbed most of the chaos before it reached them.

[Bloodline drift detected: Lineage Swarm, emerging.]

He wasn’t surprised by the notice so much as satisfied by it — a handful of roaches who’d spent weeks doing nothing but moving food, tending the nursery, running messages between posts, coming out of their molts a little more attuned to each other, moving in loose formation without needing to be told, the beginnings of the collective coordination the lineage was supposed to carry.

He watched two of them work a food transfer one evening, passing a scavenged crumb hand to hand — leg to leg — down a line of six without a single wasted motion, and felt something settle in his chest that had nothing to do with rank or Faith at all.

Three lineages drifting into being now, none of them forced, all of them grown out of what the colony actually needed to survive. He thought, not for the first time, that this was probably closer to what Divine Creature was supposed to mean than anything he’d done with a ring of ambush fighters — not conjuring power out of nothing, but noticing what was already trying to happen and giving it room.

It was on one of those quiet mapping days, out past the duct’s far end where the old wiring finally gave way to bare concrete, that Khrr found the thing that reminded him the walls belonged to a bigger world than his own.

Scratched into the dust of the concrete, half-buried under a scatter of old plaster, was writing — human writing, faded but legible even to eyes that had never learned to read it in this body, because some habits of thirty-four years don’t leave when the rest of you does.

DEMO — SECTOR 4 — Q3.

A date beneath it, a season out — months, not weeks, but not the kind of margin a man could afford to ignore either. Sacha stood over it a long time, turning it over with the part of his mind that had once read chart notes and knew exactly what a scheduled demolition meant for everything living inside the walls it was scheduled to remove.

He made himself trace the letters twice more before he trusted the translation, the way he’d once double-checked a lab result before letting it change a treatment plan. There was no ambiguity to find in it the second time. Sector 4 was a designation, not a guess, and Q3 wasn’t far enough away to be someone else’s problem.

Not everything out here is a rival Sanctuary, he thought, feeling something colder than a spider or a centipede settle into his plans. Some of it doesn’t even know we exist, and it’s going to kill us anyway.

It wasn’t an immediate problem — weeks, the date said, and weeks was time he intended to use — but it reframed every quiet, patient plan he’d been making about ducts and nurseries and lineages. A colony built to survive spiders and centipedes and hostile rats wasn’t automatically built to survive a wrecking ball, and he had no idea yet whether ”Divine Creature” came with any answer to that at all. He walked the length of the mark twice more, filing its exact position in memory the way he used to memorize the layout of a building before an entry, and said nothing to the rest of the colony yet, because a panic he couldn’t direct usefully wasn’t information — it was just cruelty dressed up as honesty.

He filed it next to the rank ladder as a second, quieter deadline running underneath the first, and started thinking, that same night, about what kind of ground could possibly survive what was coming.
