The Roach God

The duct earned its keep in the first week alone, and Sacha let himself enjoy that fact for exactly as long as it lasted. It ran deeper than he’d first guessed, a straight warm channel threading past the old wiring for a good thirty feet before splitting into three narrower branches, each one worth a day of careful, unhurried mapping. He walked it himself more often than the work strictly required, not out of distrust of his scouts but because there was something steadying about tracing new ground with his own antennae after two months of nothing but crisis management — the closest thing to a quiet walk he’d had since the second death.

The quiet didn’t last three days.

A forager came back missing two legs and half a wing case, dragging itself the last stretch home on pure stubbornness, and what it brought with it — mixed into its own scent, unmistakable once Sacha’s antennae parsed it out — was the signature of something with too many legs and none of the patience the rat colony had shown. He sat with the injured forager himself, doing the closest thing his new body allowed to the bedside triage he used to run without thinking, and got what he needed out of the fragmented, pain-scattered scent-trail it could still produce: numbers, direction, and the particular staggered gait of a hunter that didn’t work alone.

Khrr’s scouting confirmed it within a day. Centipedes — at least three, maybe four, working the duct’s far branch in loose coordination that suggested, if not a spark, then at least a level of instinct sharp enough to hunt as a pack, taking turns pressing and falling back the way real coordination looked rather than blind aggression.

This time Sacha didn’t hesitate over the decision the way he had with the spider. He’d learned enough, in a month of small claims and near-disasters, to know the shape of a fight worth having from one that wasn’t. Three or four centipedes in a stretch of duct that wasn’t even fully theirs yet wasn’t a war for survival — it was a border dispute, exactly the kind he’d already learned, from the rats, that established neighbors preferred to settle cheaply rather than pay for in blood. But the rats had been reasonable because they had more to lose than to gain from a fight. He had no way yet to know if centipedes reasoned the same way, and he wasn’t willing to bet the duct on the assumption that they did.

So this time he built the fight instead of gambling on it. He pulled twelve from the newly drifting Lineage Carapace, the toughest backs in the colony, and set them at the duct’s narrow mouth — a chokepoint no centipede’s superior speed could turn into an advantage — while six of the leaner, faster roaches harassed from the flanks, never engaging directly, just enough to keep the centipedes turning instead of pressing forward as a unit. It cost him two full days of drilling to get the coordination clean, and he ran it again and again against nothing but empty duct, walking each position through its role individually before ever letting them run the drill together, the same patient way he’d once trained ten roaches against an empty patch of floor, because a plan that only worked in his head wasn’t a plan yet. By the end of the second day, the chokepoint held against a mock rush nine times out of ten, and he decided that was close enough to trust with real bodies.

The fight itself, when it came, was almost anticlimactic after the buildup — which was, he reflected afterward, probably the whole point of doing it properly instead of betting everything on nerve a second time. The lead centipede hit the chokepoint fast and confident, the way something used to winning through raw aggression always did, and found twelve braced backs instead of open ground. It reared, trying to find an angle the narrow gap simply didn’t offer, and the flanking roaches used the half-second that cost it to peel the second centipede off before it could commit to supporting the first. One centipede dead at the chokepoint, blocking the others’ own advance long enough for the flanking roaches to pick apart the retreat entirely. No losses on his side worth the word sacrifice — a few injuries, nothing permanent, the difference between a fight built on preparation and one built on nerve laid bare in the numbers.

The survivors didn’t press deeper into the duct after that; whatever passed for their own calculation, it apparently reached the same conclusion the rats had.

Two down. Fifty-two, at minimum, to go, if his earlier arithmetic held. Sacha stood in the warm hum of the duct’s old wiring, watching Khrr organize the wounded back toward the nest without needing to be told how, and let himself feel exactly one thing about it: satisfied, and nothing more. Not triumphant. Not finished. There was a whole duct still to map, a colony still learning what its own bodies were slowly becoming, and somewhere out past all of it, ranks he couldn’t yet imagine, held by things he’d never met.

That was fine. He had time — or he’d better, because there wasn’t another way through this that didn’t run through all nine steps one at a time.

What stayed with him afterward wasn’t the rank. It was a single moment about six seconds into the fight, which he replayed that night and several nights after.

One of the Carapace roaches — a broad, unhurried male he had never once singled out for anything — had taken a direct strike from the lead centipede’s forelimb, square across the back, with the full weight of the thing behind it.

It had not died. It had not even moved much. It had absorbed the blow, adjusted its footing by a body-width, and gone back to holding the line, and the centipede had visibly hesitated, which was the half-second the entire flanking maneuver had been built to exploit.

Sacha had drilled that formation for two days on the assumption that twelve bodies would hold because twelve was a lot. It hadn’t held because of the number. It had held because a roach that had spent six weeks standing in a doorway had, without instruction and without anyone noticing, become something that could take a hit meant to kill it.

He went and looked at the male afterward. There was a fracture line across the dorsal plate, healing already, and underneath it a thickness that had not been there in the crawlspace generation.

They’re changing faster than I’m changing, Sacha thought, and could not decide whether that was reassuring or the single most important thing he had learned all week.
