Chapter 1144: Chapter 1143: The Sovereign Witch

Lin Dong was somewhat taken aback. He truly had not expected that he would actually pass the trial.

Before the start of the assessment, had the keeper of the formation not said that one needed to be a good City Lord?

Yet during his month of acting as the City Lord, he ended up with everyone opposing him, scolding him, and saying he was a tyrant.

Everyone cursed him as a bad City Lord.

How did he pass the test?

Perhaps seeing Lin Dong’s puzzled expression, for once, the keeper of the formation couldn’t help but offer an explanation:

”This final trial actually tests you on two points.”

”First, it tests whether you would lose your sense of justice under the influence of flattery, temptation, close associates, and so on when in a position of power. Clearly, you have always qualified.”

”Second, it tests whether, in a position of power, you covet reputation and whether you would forsake your true self in order to be seen as a ’good City Lord’ in the eyes of the world.”

”If you had spared that very kind person, perhaps you could have won the praise of the whole city, with people lauding you as a ’good City Lord,’ but that so-called ’good City Lord’ would be attained at the sacrifice of your true self and of justice... hence, you would have failed the assessment!”

”To pass this trial, you need to be a good City Lord. But here, the good City Lord is not the one seen by others, but the embodiment of justice in your own heart.”

”When you follow the justice in your heart, then you are that good City Lord!”

Hearing this, Lin Dong finally understood.

So that’s how it is.

”Furthermore, there’s another point— you were even willing to give up the Legacy of the Sovereign Witch to adhere to your true self! This is the toughest part and is why the last wizard who made it this far failed.”

”If he could have let go of that obsession, just like you, and stuck to his true self, then he would have been successful. But there are no what-ifs in life...”

”Alright, kid, you’ve passed through three stages. Walk forward, and you will meet the ’Sovereign Witch’...”

The voice in the Dark World grew fainter and ultimately dissipated completely.

Outside the formation, ever since Lin Dong entered the Third Stage, Master Bai Mei and Zhang Tianjue could only see Lin Dong standing still in his original location.

They saw Lin Dong standing motionless on the spot for an entire day!

The reason for this situation is that, in the Third Stage, the test was conducted through an Illusionary Realm.

Whether it was the temptation of wealth or beauty, or adhering to one’s true self under the allure of power, these all happened within the Illusionary Realm.

Therefore, what Master Bai Mei and Zhang Tianjue outside the formation saw was Lin Dong remaining motionless.

”The Third Stage. In the history of our Sovereign Witch Sect spanning thousands of years, only one person has reached it. Yet that person ultimately failed. I wonder if Master Lin can succeed,” Master Bai Mei murmured.

Zhang Tianjue couldn’t help but say, ”The Third Stage seems to be a trial of illusions. I do not know what kind of illusionary trials Master Lin experienced. It actually took a full day.”

”Being in an illusion for an entire day takes a great toll on one’s mental power. If Master Lin’s mental power weren’t so formidable, he simply couldn’t have withstood it.”

Master Bai Mei nodded.

If they, he and Zhang Tianjue, had to undergo this trial.

They would most certainly fail, and success would be impossible.

Because their mental power would not be sufficient to sustain them in the Illusionary Realm for an entire day.

That would lead to a complete mental breakdown!

”Master Lin seems to have woken up, he moved!” Just then, Zhang Tianjue excitedly said.

Master Bai Mei also noticed this and, profoundly shocked, said, ”Could it be that Master Lin has passed the Third Stage?”

At the moment, Lin Dong had indeed awoken from the Illusionary Realm.

When he woke up, he turned his head to look outside the formation and then nodded to the two people.

”I have passed the third trial, and now, it is time for the Legacy of the Sovereign Witch.”

After saying this, he took steps towards the front.

After walking a few steps forward, a black fog wrapped around him, and his figure also disappeared from the sight of Master Bai Mei and Zhang Tianjue.

”Master Lin, he... he really passed the Third Stage of the Divine Witchcraft Altar. It’s been thousands of years since anyone has done that, only he has managed it!” Zhang Tianjue said in shock after a long stupor.

Master Bai Mei’s face was also filled with complexity, not having expected that so many proud wizards of the Sovereign Witch Sect over thousands of years had not succeeded, yet an outsider achieved it.

”The ancient books say that to obtain the Legacy of the Sovereign Witch, one has to pass the three trials and also need the recognition of the Sovereign Witch. So, speaking of this now, might still be a bit premature!” Master Bai Mei said.

Speaking, he paused for a moment, and then continued to add:

”But even if he does not gain the recognition of the Sovereign Witch, he has still, all the same, broken the challenge history of our Sovereign Witch Sect.”

Zhang Tianjue nodded, ”I have a feeling that Master Lin will receive the Sovereign Witch’s recognition.”

”If that’s really the case, then perhaps it is destiny, signaling the resurgence of our Sovereign Witch Sect...” Master Bai Mei murmured.

His eyes sparkled with brilliance!

It was a feeling like emerging from an apocalyptic disaster and seeing endless dawn!

At the moment, Lin Dong, after entering the black fog, did not know how long he had walked.

Finally, in the midst of the fog ahead, a strange tree appeared. The tree looked very dim, and it actually didn’t have a single leaf on it.

Its body was covered with ancient patterns, and as Lin Dong looked at this tree, a certain ancient book he had once read suddenly came to mind.

He stood rooted to the spot!

”This... this seems to be the legendary Tree of Heaven!”

This Tree of Heaven was the one mentioned by Zhuang Zhou as living ”eight thousand years as spring, eight thousand years as autumn.”

Legend had it that the Tree of Heaven grew in extremely dark places.

Difficult for ordinary people to find, its growing environment must never be exposed to the sun.

In the legends, the Tree of Heaven was a symbol of longevity.

If one ate the leaves of the Tree of Heaven, one could live eight thousand more years.

However, the Tree of Heaven with its eight thousand years for spring and eight thousand years for autumn, only had the chance to sprout leaves after enduring eight thousand years.

The Tree of Heaven before him, clearly wasn’t at the time to grow leaves yet.

”You do have some insight, knowing that this is the Tree of Heaven,” just at this moment, a woman’s voice echoed.

Upon hearing this voice, Lin Dong shuddered, and quickly looked towards the direction of the sound, only to see a woman in a black dress standing behind the Tree of Heaven.

The woman had her back to him, and Lin Dong could not see her face clearly. He could only see that her figure was remarkably graceful and alluring.

What surprised Lin Dong was that he hadn’t detected her presence just now.

She seemed to have returned to a state of pristine simplicity. If she hadn’t suddenly spoken, Lin Dong might not have noticed her until now.

”You... you couldn’t be the Sovereign Witch? You’re still alive?”

Lin Dong was incredibly shocked.

The Sovereign Witch is actually a woman?

And she’s still alive!!?
