Chapter 1143: Chapter 1142 True Heart

But the Third Stage was not yet complete.

Resisting the temptation of wealth and beauty was not enough.

The person who once came to test the Third Stage had also resisted these two temptations.

The dark environment before Lin Dong once again changed, revealing a scene from reality.

It was a city, home to several hundred thousand people, and the challenge of this stage was for him to serve as the City Lord in this Dark World for one month.

The flow of time within this illusionary realm was different from the outside world; one month inside was equivalent to one day outside.

Thus, Lin Dong took up the position of City Lord in this illusionary city.

The Array Keeper told him that if he could remain a good City Lord after one month, he would pass the stage.

However, what exactly constituted a good City Lord was not clearly defined.

Consequently, Lin Dong had no idea what he needed to do to become a good City Lord.

As the City Lord, he had to exercise the rights of the position daily, issuing no fewer than ten commands each day.

Moreover, as the City Lord of the city, he held all decision-making power; his word was the ultimate authority. He could create laws to his liking and order anyone in the city to do anything. Execute anyone!

Time swiftly passed in the illusionary world like this.

Lin Dong was exercising his City Lord powers, issuing his commands daily as per the rules.

”Someone in the city has committed robbery and violence, law enforcers go and arrest him! Imprison for five years!”

”Someone killed for profit, the killer, to pay with his life!”

”I do not require your worship; remember, everyone is equal, whether born a peasant or an official, no one is inherently superior to others!”

”...”

Lin Dong issued commands every day.

And because he was the City Lord, everyone respected him greatly, and over time, there were also many who flattered him.

Beauties approached him to seduce him, requesting his favor to open a brothel...

Rich businessmen came to bribe him, seeking his assistance for better profiteering.

There were also people Lin Dong got close to during his time as City Lord, who sought favors from him.

And there were wrongdoers among those Lin Dong had become close with while serving as City Lord, begging him to turn a blind eye.

”...”

The longer Lin Dong served as City Lord, the more troubles he encountered.

However, he had always maintained his true self, never bending the law for personal gain, instead, he was a fair and impartial City Lord, making all decisions.

Quickly, a month passed in the illusionary city, and the final day arrived.

That day, Lin Dong witnessed the city’s greatest ’very kind person’ kill a child.

The law stated that murder required retribution with one’s life, especially since the victim was a child, making the execution of this ’very kind person’ even more warranted.

But after Lin Dong gave the order, nobody was willing to carry it out.

Without evidence to prove that this very kind person had killed the child, everyone refused to believe he could commit such an act.

His previous behavior had been so generously kind.

He often provided food for the poor and cared for the rich, helping them earn more wealth. Even the soldiers in the city had received various kinds of favor from him.

His reputation in the entire city, in fact, even exceeded that of Lin Dong, the City Lord.

So when Lin Dong ordered the execution of this very kind person, not a single one in the entire city obeyed.

The public and soldiers all came forth to plead with Lin Dong, trying to stop him.

”City Lord, the very kind person couldn’t possibly have killed anyone.”

”He is so kind, how could he kill anyone?”

”City Lord, please spare the very kindly person. Take back your command.”

”...”

Everyone was trying to prevent Lin Dong, and that very kind person’s gaze towards Lin Dong was also filled with mockery, as if saying, even if I did kill someone, only you know it, what can you do to me?

Would you really go against the will of the entire city’s people to execute me?

Lin Dong advanced toward the very kind person with a cold expression and said to everyone:

”Since none of you will obey my command, then I shall carry out the execution myself!”

Lin Dong didn’t waste words; after reaching the very kind person, he ’crack’ abruptly executed him.

Watching the very kind person’s head fall to the ground, the entire city erupted in public anger.

”Damn it, he really killed the very kind person!”

”Tyrant, he is a tyrant!”

”You don’t deserve to be our City Lord; you murder the innocent!”

”You are not a good City Lord!”

”...”

Instantly, the public outcry was deafening, everyone was complaining about Lin Dong, accusing him of being a tyrant, a corrupt official.

Lin Dong’s reputation was utterly destroyed.

Seeing this, a bitter smile appeared on Lin Dong’s face as he thought, surely he had failed this stage by now.

After all, he had become the City Lord everyone in the city wanted to pelt, they all called him a tyrant.

The environment and city before him vanished, and Lin Dong reemerged in the Dark World, at the moment turning his head to speak:

”It seems I did not manage to be a good City Lord; my breakthrough has failed.”

He sighed, feeling a bit of regret.

This was the last stage, and if he had passed it, he could have met the Sovereign Witch and received the Legacy of the Sovereign Witch.

Yet, he fell at the last step.

In the darkness, that voice sounded again, asking Lin Dong, ”If given another opportunity, would you spare that very kind person in order to win over the public’s heart and maintain your reputation as a good City Lord?”

Lin Dong opened his mouth, then resolutely shook his head, ”Impossible, the moment I saw him murder that child, I couldn’t possibly let him go!”

”Even if he had done many good deeds before, even if he had high prestige among the public, even if killing him meant offending the entire city’s populace, even the entire world, I would not let him go!”

”So even if given another chance, I would still strike him down the same way! I have always, always stuck to my principles...”

After finishing these words, the Dark World fell into protracted silence.

After a while, that voice finally spoke slowly:

”Congratulations, you have passed the entire Third Stage, as well as the final test.”

”You will soon meet... the Sovereign Witch!!!”

Hum~~~

As these words were spoken, Lin Dong’s mind buzzed.

What happened?

How had he passed the test?
