Chapter 147: Chapter 147: The Woman in the Lobby

The corporate fraud investigator Watanabe brought in introduced herself as Detective Ogawa, and the first thing she did upon arriving was confiscate everyone’s phones and replace them with encrypted burner devices, a gesture that made the danger feel considerably more real than any amount of discussion had managed.

”If Ariadne has the resources to trace phone signals and access secured apartments without forced entry, your current devices are compromised,” she explained, distributing the replacements around the coalition’s conference table with brisk efficiency. ”Consider everything you’ve discussed over your normal phones and computers potentially already known to them.”

The room absorbed that grimly. Haruki thought of every strategy conversation, every piece of evidence shared over the group chat, every quiet phone call to Yui discussing his fears, all of it potentially already sitting in some file somewhere, monitored by people they still couldn’t fully identify.

”What do we actually know about Ariadne at this point?” Hayato asked, understandably eager to move past the unsettling implications toward something actionable.

Ogawa opened a folder, considerably thicker than anything Nakamura had managed to compile independently. ”More than you’d expect, given how carefully they’ve hidden themselves. Ariadne Strategic Partners was founded fourteen years ago by three partners, none of whom appear on any current corporate documentation. The current listed director is essentially a placeholder — a retired accountant with no apparent involvement in daily operations, likely paid simply to have his name attached to public filings.”

”So the actual founders are hidden,” Suzune said.

”Deliberately, expertly hidden,” Ogawa confirmed. ”But nobody hides perfectly forever. I found a single overlooked filing from the company’s early years, before they tightened their operational security. One founding partner’s name appears on it before being scrubbed from every subsequent document.” She pulled out a single page, sliding it across the table.

Haruki leaned forward to read the name, and something cold settled immediately in his stomach.

*Watanabe, Kenzo.*

The room went utterly silent. Watanabe herself — the lawyer, their own lawyer, who’d fought Horizon Creative alongside them for over a year — stared at the page with an expression Haruki couldn’t fully read, something between shock and dawning, horrified recognition.

”That’s my father,” she said finally, her voice carefully controlled in a way that suggested enormous effort. ”My father died six years ago. He was a corporate consultant. I never knew the specifics of his early career work. He didn’t discuss it, and I never thought to ask.”

The room absorbed this revelation in tense silence, everyone recalculating exactly how deep this conspiracy actually ran, whether it had somehow been sitting inside their own coalition’s foundational trust the entire time without any of them realizing it.

”I need to be direct about something,” Watanabe continued, her professional composure visibly straining. ”I had no knowledge of this connection until this exact moment. If anyone here questions my continued involvement given this revelation, I understand completely, and I’ll withdraw immediately.”

”Nobody’s questioning that,” Haruki said firmly, though he could see uncertainty flickering across a few other faces around the table. ”You’ve spent over a year fighting exactly the kind of corruption your father apparently helped build. That’s not suspicious. That’s the opposite of suspicious.”

”It’s also not proof of anything definitive,” Ogawa added pragmatically. ”A father’s involvement fourteen years ago doesn’t implicate the daughter today, especially given no evidence suggests she had any knowledge of it. But it does give us our first genuine thread to pull. If Kenzo Watanabe helped found Ariadne, there’s likely a paper trail connecting him to the other two founding partners, wherever they currently operate.”

Watanabe nodded slowly, something resolute settling into her expression despite the obvious personal difficulty of the revelation. ”I have access to my father’s old private files. I never went through them properly after he passed — grief, mostly, and simple avoidance. I think it’s time I finally did.”

The meeting continued for another hour, establishing a plan for Watanabe to review her father’s private records under Ogawa’s professional guidance, ensuring anything relevant could be properly documented and secured before Ariadne’s people had any opportunity to intervene.

That evening, exhausted from the day’s revelations, Haruki left the building later than intended, the winter evening already fully dark by the time he stepped outside. He’d taken perhaps twenty steps toward the station when a woman fell into step beside him, appearing so suddenly he nearly startled into the street.

”Don’t react visibly,” she said quietly, her voice calm and controlled. ”I’m not here to hurt you.”

Haruki’s pulse spiked immediately, every instinct screaming danger even as he forced himself to maintain a steady, unremarkable pace. ”Who are you?”

”Someone who used to work for Ariadne Strategic Partners.” She kept her eyes forward, scanning the street around them with the practiced awareness of someone accustomed to being watched. ”I left three years ago. I’ve been trying to decide whether to contact your coalition ever since.”

”Why now?”

”Because they’ve escalated to physical threats, and that means they’re frightened, which means your investigation is actually getting close to something that matters.” She finally glanced at him briefly. ”I can give you real information. Names, structure, exactly how deep the corruption runs. But if I do this, I need protection, and I need it before I say another word.”

Haruki’s mind raced through the implications, weighing the obvious danger against the potential value of what she was offering. ”I need to bring in people I trust. This isn’t a decision I can make alone.”

”I understand. But we need to move quickly.” She pressed a small folded piece of paper into his hand as they walked. ”Contact information for a secure channel. Use it within twenty-four hours, or I disappear and this offer disappears with me. They’re already suspicious that I’ve been asking too many questions internally.”

Before he could respond further, she peeled away at the next intersection, disappearing into the evening crowd with practiced ease, leaving Haruki standing alone on the sidewalk, heart pounding, the small folded paper feeling impossibly heavy in his hand.

He called Suzune immediately, walking her through everything as quickly as he could manage while his hands still trembled slightly from the encounter.

”This could be exactly the breakthrough we need,” Suzune said, though caution colored her voice heavily. ”Or it could be a trap designed to lure us into a vulnerable position. We need Ogawa’s assessment before acting on any of it.”

”I know. I’m heading straight to the office now instead of home.”

”Good instinct. Don’t go anywhere alone tonight, Haruki. Not after this.”

He agreed, and within an hour, the full coalition had reconvened once more, examining the folded paper Haruki had received with the same careful scrutiny they’d applied to every piece of evidence throughout this entire dangerous, expanding investigation.

”It’s a legitimate encrypted contact protocol,” Ogawa confirmed after examining it. ”Professional grade, the kind used by people who understand exactly how to protect sensitive communications. This isn’t amateur work.”

”So we contact her,” Hayato said.

”Carefully,” Ogawa emphasized. ”With proper security precautions on our end as well. If she’s genuine, this could give us everything we need. If it’s a trap, we need to ensure we’re not walking into it blindly.”

Haruki looked around the room at the assembled coalition — people who’d fought alongside him through lawsuits, public scandals, and now something considerably more dangerous than either — and felt, despite the mounting fear, a steady resolve settling into place.

They’d come too far to stop now, whatever waited on the other side of that small folded piece of paper.

Tomorrow, they would find out exactly how far this conspiracy truly extended.

Tonight, Haruki finally called Yui, needing her steady voice to ground him before facing whatever came next.
