Chapter 111: Chapter 111: Back to the Desk

Haruki did not open the anonymous voicemail again.

The file remained on his phone, buried under recordings, screenshots, and half-finished notes from people who seemed determined to turn his life into an investigation board.

At 6:40 in the morning, he moved all of it into a folder labeled Later.

Then he closed the folder.

The name looked childish.

It also worked.

Ghost Project could wait.

The missing employee could wait.

The voice could wait.

Chapter Twenty-Nine could not.

His desk looked worse than usual. Manga pages covered the left side. Contract notes occupied the right. Yui’s old sticky note still clung to the lamp, curling at one corner.

Do not be dumb.

Haruki considered moving it.

He didn’t.

Some legal documents deserved preservation.

He pulled the newest manuscript page toward him. Ren stood beneath an overpass in the rain, holding proof the public no longer fully trusted. Miyu waited beside him with a cracked phone in her hand. Shiori watched the street behind them, expecting pursuit from every passing car.

The scene needed motion.

Not discussion.

Not moral analysis.

Motion.

So Haruki drew Ren running.

A real chase scene.

Wet pavement. Flickering vending machines. Bicycle bells. A police siren too far away to help. Miyu slipping near a stairway and catching herself against a rusted railing. Shiori shoving a trash bin into a narrow alley to slow two Bureau agents.

Panels filled faster than they had in weeks.

Not easily.

Faster.

The new Production Pipeline Manager helped without being intrusive. It did not provide clever dialogue. It did not fix Ren’s emotions. It simply showed page rhythm, panel density, and where his pacing dragged.

Panel 7 overcrowded.

Haruki erased two background figures.

Action flow improved.

Good.

No.

Useful.

That word was safer.

By ten, he had eight pages drafted.

By noon, eleven.

At 12:14, his phone buzzed.

Yui.

He stared at the screen for three seconds before answering.

”You’re awake,” she said.

”Rude opening.”

”You answered on the first ring. Something is wrong.”

”I am working.”

”That also sounds suspicious.”

Behind her, voices moved through the community center. Children shouted. Someone called her name. A chair scraped against the floor.

Her world sounded alive.

Haruki put his pencil down. ”Busy?”

”Very.”

”You called.”

”Because if I waited until I wasn’t busy, we would talk sometime next century.”

The reply made him smile.

For a few seconds, neither spoke. The noise on her side filled the silence: paper rustling, footsteps, a child complaining dramatically about spilled juice.

Then Yui said, ”About Osaka.”

His hand tightened around the phone.

”Yeah.”

”I haven’t decided.”

”I know.”

”You looked like you thought I already had.”

Haruki leaned back, chair creaking beneath him. On the tablet, Ren froze mid-run in an alley full of rain.

”I was trying not to react badly.”

”You reacted like someone trying not to react badly.”

”That’s worse.”

”It was obvious.”

A child’s voice interrupted her. ”Tanaka-san! The glue exploded!”

Yui inhaled sharply. ”How does glue explode?”

The line muffled as she turned away. Haruki heard hurried footsteps, a younger volunteer laughing, and Yui saying, ”Don’t touch your hair. Why did you touch your hair?”

The call stayed open.

Haruki sat there listening to chaos.

For once, no lesson formed neatly in his head.

Just an image: Yui standing in a community center, phone tucked between shoulder and ear, rescuing children from adhesive disaster while discussing a possible move to Osaka.

It was absurd.

It was important.

It was Yui.

She returned after nearly two minutes, slightly breathless.

”Sorry.”

”It’s fine.”

”No, it isn’t. There is glue on someone’s eyebrow.”

Haruki laughed before he could stop himself.

Yui did too.

The sound was quick, bright, tired. It ended too soon.

Then she said, quieter, ”I don’t want you to tell me to stay.”

The sentence struck harder than expected.

Haruki looked at the manuscript. Ren had chosen to run because staying meant capture. Miyu had chosen to follow because freedom without trust meant nothing. Shiori had chosen danger because safety had become another kind of prison.

Everyone in his story was moving.

Everyone in his life was too.

”I won’t,” he said.

Yui did not answer immediately.

He added, ”But I don’t want to pretend I wouldn’t miss you.”

The community center noise continued behind her.

A volunteer called for more towels.

Somewhere, a child shouted, ”It wasn’t me!”

Yui exhaled, almost laughing, but not quite.

”That answer is annoying.”

”Why?”

”Because it’s fair.”

The call ended a minute later when another emergency occurred, this time involving paint, a paper fan, and one deeply offended grandmother.

Haruki kept holding the phone after the line disconnected.

His chest felt tight.

Not broken.

Not relieved.

Tight.

He returned to the desk and drew better.

The chase scene changed.

Ren stopped trying to protect everyone through control. He shouted instructions, trusted Miyu to choose her own route, trusted Shiori to handle the agents behind them, and threw himself across a flooded street to retrieve the stolen memory card before it slid into a drain.

It was messy.

He scraped his palms. Miyu yelled at him for being reckless. Shiori cursed loudly enough that Haruki had to soften the dialogue for publication.

The scene breathed.

At four, Mizuno called.

”Progress?”

”Fifteen pages.”

”Send five.”

He did.

Seven minutes passed.

She replied by phone.

”Better.”

Haruki waited for the knife.

It arrived.

”Still too clean in the last page. Let Ren make the wrong turn.”

”He already almost loses the memory card.”

”Almost isn’t enough.”

Haruki stared at the page. Ren escaped through the correct alley in his draft. It worked. It was exciting. It protected the evidence.

Too convenient.

He redrew the final sequence.

Ren chose the wrong staircase. The group reached a locked service gate. Bureau agents closed in from behind. Miyu had to break a window with her elbow. Blood ran down her sleeve. The memory card survived, but the escape left evidence of their route.

A victory with a visible cost.

Much better.

At 8:30, an industry alert appeared on his phone.

Threadless Gate drops to Rank 14.

Haruki looked at it.

Then put the phone face down.

No refresh.

No forum.

No spiral.

The Chapter still needed six pages.

At 10:11, the system appeared.

Recommended Priority:

Publish consistent work.

Haruki read it once and closed the window.

He didn’t need the system to tell him that tonight.

Rain began after midnight.

Tokyo blurred outside the glass. Inside, pages stacked one by one beside his tablet.

His career was bruised.

His public image was unstable.

Yui might leave.

Ghost Project still waited in the dark.

None of that disappeared.

None of it resolved.

But Chapter Twenty-Nine finally had a pulse.

Haruki kept drawing until his wrist ached, until the kettle cooled untouched, until the city outside quieted.

For the first time in weeks, the work was louder than the noise around it.

Not enough to fix everything.

Enough to begin.
