Chapter 133: Chapter 133: The Wrong Story

Yui arrived at Tokyo Station on Saturday morning carrying one small suitcase and an expression that shifted the moment she spotted Haruki waiting near the ticket gates — relief first, then something warmer, something that made the whole crowded platform feel briefly smaller and quieter than it actually was.

”You look tired,” she said, by way of greeting, setting down her bag to hug him properly.

”You always say that.”

”Because it’s always true.” She pulled back to actually study his face. ”Tired in a good way, though. Fought-for-something-and-won tired. Not collapsing-under-deadlines tired.”

He laughed, because she was right, and because she’d always been able to read the specific flavor of his exhaustion better than he could describe it himself. ”How was the train?”

”Long. I read three Chapters of a manga a friend recommended.” A small, deliberate pause. ”Not yours, before you ask. I’m allowed other manga.”

”I wasn’t going to ask.”

”You were absolutely going to ask.”

They walked out of the station together, autumn sunlight cutting sharp angles across Tokyo’s crowded streets, and for the first several minutes neither of them mentioned the confession from weeks earlier, or Osaka, or the negotiation, or anything that actually mattered. Just small things — her new coworkers, his ongoing battle with a coffee machine that had developed opinions about how much water it was willing to dispense, the absurd amount of paperwork required to formally transfer her residency registration.

It was Yui who finally broke the pattern, once they’d settled at a small café near his apartment, two cups of tea steaming between them.

”You still haven’t answered me,” she said, quietly, without any accusation in it. Just fact, laid gently on the table alongside the tea.

Haruki set down his cup. He’d known this conversation was coming the moment she’d texted about visiting, had turned it over in his head during the negotiation, during the walk home afterward, during the quiet hour before sleep last night. He still didn’t have a perfectly composed answer, and for the first time in months, he decided that was fine.

”I love you,” he said. Simply. No qualifications, no careful hedging, no attempt to make it sound more impressive than it was. ”I think I have for a long time. Longer than I let myself notice, because noticing felt like it would complicate something I didn’t want to risk complicating.”

Yui went very still, her tea forgotten between her hands.

”And I know that’s not exactly convenient timing,” he continued, because now that he’d started he found he couldn’t quite stop. ”You’re building a life in Osaka. I’m still figuring out what my career actually looks like now that half of it just got rewritten by a lawsuit. Neither of us knows what the next year looks like.” He met her eyes directly. ”But I didn’t want to keep waiting for a convenient moment, because I don’t think one’s coming. I think the honest moments are just the ones you choose to have, whenever they happen to show up.”

For a long moment, Yui said nothing at all. Then, slowly, a smile spread across her face — not the small, careful one she usually offered when she was protecting herself from disappointment, but something fuller, something that reached all the way to her eyes.

”That’s a very Haruki answer,” she said finally, echoing words she’d used once before, in a different context, under very different circumstances.

”Is that a compliment this time?”

”It’s always a compliment. I’ve just gotten better at hiding that.” She reached across the small table and took his hand, her fingers warm against his. ”I was scared you’d never say it. Not because I doubted it was true. Because I know you. I know how long you can sit on a feeling before you let yourself act on it.”

”I’m working on that.”

”I noticed.” She squeezed his hand once. ”Chapter Twenty-Four notwithstanding.”

He groaned, and she laughed, the sound bright and unguarded, drawing a brief curious glance from the couple at the next table before they returned to their own conversation.

”So,” Haruki said, once the laughter settled, ”what happens now? Practically, I mean. You’re in Osaka. I’m here. Long distance is—”

”Doable,” Yui interrupted, firmly. ”Difficult, occasionally miserable, and doable. I’ve thought about this longer than you apparently have. Trains exist. Video calls exist. I’m not asking you to solve the entire geography of it in one conversation over tea.”

”That’s remarkably practical of you.”

”I’m a very practical person who happens to be in love with someone deeply impractical. Someone has to balance the equation.” The teasing softened into something more sincere. ”I don’t need you to have it all figured out today. I needed you to be honest about what you actually feel. You did that. The logistics can be a project we work on together instead of a problem you have to solve alone before you’re allowed to say anything.”

Something in Haruki’s chest loosened further, a tension he hadn’t fully realized he was still carrying since the riverside confession weeks ago. He’d spent so long treating this like one more crisis requiring a perfect solution before he could act, the same instinct that had nearly ruined Chapter Twenty-Four, the same instinct Mizuno and Kuroda and half his friends had spent months trying to talk him out of. Yui had simply cut straight through it, the way she always did.

”I don’t deserve you,” he said, only half joking.

”No,” she agreed cheerfully. ”But I’ve decided that’s not actually a prerequisite for this. You’re getting better. That’s enough for me.”

They spent the rest of the afternoon walking through Tokyo without any particular destination, the city unfolding around them in its familiar autumn rhythms — vendors calling out seasonal specials, students clustered outside a bookstore comparing notes, an elderly couple feeding pigeons in a small park despite the clearly posted signs asking people not to. Yui pointed out a poster advertising a manga exhibition three months from now, and Haruki felt a small, unexpected thrill at the thought of still being here, still working, still building something worth exhibiting by the time it arrived.

That evening, they ended up back at his apartment, the manuscript pages for Chapter Thirty-Two still spread across his desk from the night before. Yui picked one up, studying it with the particular scrutiny she always applied to his work now, no longer the casual glance of a childhood friend but something closer to genuine investment.

”Ren looks tired,” she observed.

”Ren’s had a long year.”

”So has his creator.” She set the page down carefully. ”Are you going to be okay? After all of this? The lawsuit, the coalition, everything?”

Haruki considered the question seriously, the way he’d learned to over the past several months instead of reaching immediately for whatever answer sounded most reassuring. ”I don’t know yet. The negotiation framework still needs board approval. There’s still an anonymous person somewhere inside Horizon who hasn’t told me their name, and Kuroda thinks their loyalties might not be as settled as they seem.” He paused. ”But I think, for the first time since the tournament ended, I’m not scared of not knowing. I think I finally trust that I can handle whatever the answer turns out to be.”

Yui studied him for a long moment, something warm and proud settling into her expression. ”That’s genuinely the healthiest thing I’ve heard you say all year.”

”Low bar.”

”Extremely low bar,” she agreed, laughing. ”But you cleared it anyway, so I’m taking the win.”

Later, after she’d gone to sleep in the small guest futon he’d set up — an arrangement neither of them had discussed or needed to, simply the shape their relationship currently occupied, patient and unhurried in a way that felt right rather than frustrating — Haruki sat alone at his desk for a while longer, looking at the unfinished manuscript, at his phone, at the quiet apartment that finally felt less empty than it had in weeks.

His phone buzzed once, softly, on the desk beside him. A message, not from Yui, not from Mizuno, not from any of the coalition. Unknown number, the same one that had been calling for months now.

I heard about the negotiation framework. Well done.

He stared at it for a moment before typing back: Are you ever going to tell me who you are?

The reply took longer than usual this time, several minutes passing in silence before his phone finally buzzed again.

Yes. Soon. I think you’re finally ready to hear it, and I think I’m finally ready to say it.

Haruki read the message twice, a strange mixture of anticipation and unease settling in his chest. Whatever came next — the board’s decision, the anonymous caller’s eventual reveal, the slow, ordinary work of building a life that spanned two cities instead of one — none of it felt like a battle he had to fight entirely alone anymore.

He set the phone down, glanced once more at Yui’s quiet shape asleep across the room, and turned back to the manuscript with something that felt, for the first time in a long while, remarkably close to peace.

Tomorrow could bring whatever it wanted to bring.

Tonight, at least, he finally had an answer worth holding onto.
