Chapter 109: Chapter 109: The Voice

Haruki spent the entire morning trying to remember where he’d heard it.

The voice.

---

Not the words.

---

The voice.

---

Deep.

Calm.

---

Not old.

Not young.

---

Familiar.

---

Infuriatingly familiar.

---

His brain recognized it.

---

His memory refused cooperation.

---

By noon, Haruki hated everyone involved.

---

Especially himself.

---

At 12:18 PM, he replayed the voicemail for the twenty-third time.

---

”You’ve spent weeks asking the wrong questions.”

---

The recording ended.

---

Again.

---

Nothing.

---

No breakthrough.

No revelation.

---

Just frustration.

---

The system appeared.

---

Workflow Analysis

Current Activity:

Obsessive Pattern Recognition

---

Productivity Impact:

Negative

---

Recommendation:

Work.

---

Haruki closed the notification.

---

Immediately.

---

Because the system wasn’t wrong.

---

Which made it annoying.

---

Very annoying.

---

At one o’clock, Chapter Twenty-Eight released.

---

The first Chapter written entirely after accepting the consequences.

---

No panic rewrites.

No audience chasing.

No compromise.

---

Just story.

---

The response arrived slowly.

---

Different.

---

Not explosive.

Not viral.

---

Different.

---

Comments discussed Ren again.

---

Not Haruki.

---

Not publishers.

---

Not rankings.

---

The story.

---

Actual story discussion.

---

A small change.

---

A very important change.

---

The realization felt dangerous.

---

Because it offered hope.

---

And hope could be misleading.

---

At two o’clock, Haruki met Rika.

---

Unexpectedly.

---

The heiress requested lunch.

---

The phrasing alone sounded expensive.

---

The restaurant confirmed it.

---

Everything looked polished.

---

Including the water.

---

Haruki didn’t know water could look wealthy.

---

Apparently it could.

---

Rika arrived exactly on time.

---

Naturally.

---

No.

---

Still banned.

---

The habit fought for survival.

---

The conversation began with contracts.

---

Then shifted.

---

Then shifted again.

---

Eventually Rika asked:

---

”Have you noticed the change?”

---

Haruki frowned.

---

”What change?”

---

The woman tapped her tablet.

---

Analytics.

---

Creator discussions.

Reader sentiment.

---

Data.

---

Lots of data.

---

The kind wealthy media families apparently collected for fun.

---

Rika zoomed in.

---

A graph appeared.

---

Three weeks.

---

One line tracked controversy discussion.

---

Another tracked story discussion.

---

For the first time in weeks, the lines moved toward each other.

---

Not dramatically.

---

Enough.

---

The work was reclaiming attention.

---

Slowly.

---

Painfully.

---

Correctly.

---

Rika studied his reaction.

---

Then:

---

”You look disappointed.”

---

Haruki blinked.

---

”What?”

---

”Most creators would be relieved.”

---

Fair.

---

Very fair.

---

The problem was that relief wasn’t the dominant emotion.

---

Fear was.

---

Because if the recovery happened naturally...

---

Then the mistake really had been avoidable.

---

The implication lingered.

---

Rika noticed.

---

Dangerous woman.

---

Very dangerous woman.

---

”You still want punishment.”

---

The statement arrived casually.

---

Like discussing weather.

---

Haruki stared.

---

”No.”

---

The denial lacked confidence.

---

Rika smiled slightly.

---

The expression somehow felt sympathetic.

---

Which made it worse.

---

Much worse.

---

The conversation ended shortly afterward.

---

No dramatic lessons.

No elegant conclusions.

---

Just discomfort.

---

Healthy discomfort.

---

At four o’clock, another problem arrived.

---

Suzune.

---

The assistant editor requested a meeting.

---

Immediate.

---

Urgent.

---

Wonderful.

---

Haruki arrived twenty minutes later.

---

Suzune waited inside a conference room.

---

Not alone.

---

A man sat across from her.

---

Late thirties.

Dark suit.

Tired eyes.

---

The expression belonged to someone who’d spent years cleaning other people’s disasters.

---

Editor energy.

---

Strong editor energy.

---

The man stood.

---

Extended a hand.

---

”Nakamura.”

---

Simple.

---

Professional.

---

Haruki shook it.

---

The editor studied him briefly.

---

Then:

---

”I read the voicemail transcript.”

---

Silence.

---

Because Haruki never provided it.

---

Then remembered.

---

Suzune.

---

Of course.

---

Traitor.

---

Helpful traitor.

---

The worst category.

---

Nakamura opened a folder.

---

Inside sat several printed documents.

---

Old creator interviews.

Conference recordings.

Industry panels.

---

A lot of material.

---

Far too much material.

---

”What is this?”

---

The editor pointed toward one page.

---

”Listen.”

---

A laptop started playing audio.

---

An old recording.

---

Industry event.

---

Crowd noise.

Applause.

---

Then a voice.

---

Haruki froze.

---

Immediately.

---

Because he recognized it.

---

Not perfectly.

---

Enough.

---

The same rhythm.

The same tone.

---

The voicemail voice.

---

Or close.

---

Very close.

---

The recording continued.

---

The speaker discussed creator ownership.

Publishing structures.

Industry reform.

---

Then the name appeared.

---

Project Ghost Symposium.

---

The room remained silent.

---

Not dramatic silence.

---

Focused silence.

---

Nakamura paused the recording.

---

Then:

---

”Recognize it?”

---

Haruki nodded slowly.

---

The editor leaned back.

---

”Took us awhile.”

---

A pause.

---

”The recording is eleven years old.”

---

Eleven.

---

Years.

---

The number hit harder than expected.

---

Because the voicemail sounded recent.

Alive.

---

Current.

---

Not eleven years old.

---

The implications multiplied immediately.

---

Too many implications.

---

Suzune finally spoke.

---

”The voice belongs to someone connected to Ghost Project.”

---

A pause.

---

”Someone we believed disappeared.”

---

The room went still.

---

Not metaphorically.

---

Actually still.

---

Nobody moved.

---

Nobody spoke.

---

Because the statement changed everything.

---

Not the manga.

---

Not the contracts.

---

The investigation.

---

The rules.

---

For the first time, the anonymous messages had a possible source.

---

A real one.

---

Before anyone could continue, Nakamura’s phone rang.

---

The editor checked the screen.

---

His expression changed.

---

Subtly.

---

Enough.

---

He answered.

---

Listened.

---

Then stood.

---

Immediately.

---

”What happened?”

Suzune asked.

---

Nakamura looked at both of them.

---

Then delivered the worst possible update.

---

”The suspended employee.”

---

A pause.

---

”He disappeared.”

---

No explanation followed.

---

Because none existed.

---

The room fell apart after that.

---

Phones.

Calls.

Questions.

Movement.

---

Order transformed into activity.

---

Activity transformed into concern.

---

No neat ending.

No satisfying answer.

---

Just confusion.

---

Real confusion.

---

As Haruki left the building an hour later, Tokyo looked exactly the same.

---

People crossed streets.

Trains moved.

Businesses operated.

---

The city didn’t care.

---

Cities rarely did.

---

His phone buzzed once.

---

Unknown Number.

---

One new message.

---

Now you’re finally asking the right questions.

---

Haruki stopped walking.

---

The crowd flowed around him.

---

The screen glowed in his hand.

---

For several seconds, he simply stared.

---

Then did something unexpected.

---

He deleted the message.

---

Immediately.

---

No screenshot.

No response.

---

Nothing.

---

Because for the first time, he understood something important.

---

The anonymous sender wanted engagement.

---

Wanted reaction.

---

Wanted control.

---

And Haruki finally refused.

---

The problem?

---

The relief lasted less than five minutes.

---

Because another notification appeared.

---

This one from Yui.

---

Can we talk tonight?

---

No emoji.

No explanation.

---

Nothing.

---

And somehow that message frightened him more than the disappearance, the voicemail, and Ghost Project combined.
