Chapter 145: Chapter 145: The Photograph on the Desk

Someone left a photograph on Haruki’s desk on a Monday morning, and the fact that his apartment door had been locked the entire weekend bothered him considerably more than the photograph itself.

He noticed it the moment he sat down to work — a single printed image, placed precisely in the center of his desk, angled so it would be the first thing he saw. His stomach dropped before he even picked it up.

The photograph showed him and Yui, taken from across the street outside her Osaka apartment building, timestamped three days earlier. Nothing dramatic in the image itself — just two people talking on a sidewalk, unaware they were being watched. That was exactly what made it terrifying.

His hands weren’t quite steady when he called Suzune.

”Someone’s been in my apartment,” he said, before she could even say hello. ”There’s a photo. Of me and Yui. In Osaka. Three days ago.”

Silence, then a sharp intake of breath on her end. ”Don’t touch anything else. I’m sending someone to check your apartment for entry points. Don’t leave, don’t clean anything, don’t move the photograph from where you found it.”

Twenty minutes later, a security specialist Watanabe had quietly retained since the investigation began arrived to examine Haruki’s apartment, finding no forced entry, no broken locks, no evidence of a break-in through any conventional means.

”Whoever did this has professional-level access,” the specialist said grimly, examining the door frame. ”This isn’t amateur intimidation. This is someone demonstrating capability.”

Haruki sat on his couch, the photograph now sealed in an evidence bag on his coffee table, feeling the particular cold fear of realizing a threat had moved from abstract to intimately, physically close. He called Yui immediately.

”Are you safe right now?” he asked, the moment she answered, his voice tighter than he intended.

”Haruki, what’s wrong?” Her voice shifted instantly from casual greeting to genuine alarm at his tone.

He explained everything, watching through his own fear as her expression on the video call shifted from confusion to matching alarm. ”They photographed us. Outside my apartment. Three days ago.”

”I want you to stay somewhere secure tonight,” Haruki said. ”Not your usual apartment. Somewhere they don’t already know to look.”

”Haruki, I have work tomorrow. I can’t just—”

”Please.” The word came out raw, more desperate than he intended. ”I can’t lose you to something like this. Not after everything we’ve already survived together. Please, just for tonight, stay somewhere else.”

She was quiet for a moment, absorbing the fear underneath his request, then nodded slowly. ”Okay. I’ll stay with a coworker tonight. But Haruki, we need to figure out who’s actually doing this, not just react defensively forever.”

”I know. We’re working on it.”

By evening, the full coalition had gathered again, the mood considerably darker than any previous meeting. Hayato arrived last, looking pale and shaken, a similar photograph clutched in his own hand.

”They left one for me too,” he said, setting it on the table. The image showed his own apartment building, a single window circled in red marker. ”The message is obvious. Stop the investigation, or the consequences get personal.”

Nakamura examined both photographs carefully, his expression grim. ”This confirms my worst suspicion. Whoever is protecting these contracts has resources far beyond what a corporate legal team typically commands. Professional surveillance. Physical access to secured buildings. This isn’t just corporate self-preservation anymore.”

”Then who?” Rika asked, her voice tight with barely controlled anger. ”Who has that level of capability and that much motivation to keep these specific contracts hidden?”

Kuroda had been quiet throughout the meeting, staring at the photographs with an expression Haruki couldn’t quite read. Finally, he spoke. ”I think I know.”

The room turned to him immediately. ”Eleven years ago, when Ghost Project collapsed, I always assumed it was simple corporate self-interest. Investors pulling funding because a rival opportunity looked more profitable.” He paused. ”But there was always a piece that didn’t fit. The speed of it. The coordination across three separate investors simultaneously. That level of coordination requires someone directing it, not just separate companies independently reaching the same conclusion.”

”You think there’s someone behind Ghost Project’s collapse specifically,” Haruki said slowly. ”Someone who’s still active. Still protecting whatever system they built.”

”I think,” Kuroda said, ”that we’ve been fighting individual companies this entire time — Horizon, now Kanzaki Holdings — without recognizing they might both be downstream of the same original source. Someone who profits from exactly this kind of predatory contract system existing across the entire industry, not just within one company.”

The room absorbed that in heavy silence. Haruki felt the shape of the fight shifting again, expanding beyond anything they’d previously understood, the individual battles they’d won suddenly looking like skirmishes against something considerably larger and more entrenched.

”How do we find them?” Hayato asked.

”Carefully,” Watanabe said, speaking for the first time that evening. ”Whoever this is has already demonstrated they’re willing to escalate to physical intimidation. We cannot proceed the way we handled Horizon or the current Kanzaki investigation. This requires actual security precautions, not just legal strategy.”

The meeting continued for another two hours, establishing new protocols — secure communication channels, physical security for key coalition members, a careful, methodical approach to identifying whoever sat at the center of this larger pattern without exposing themselves to further direct threats.

By the time Haruki finally returned home, exhausted and afraid in a way he hadn’t experienced since the darkest days of the Horizon lawsuit, his phone buzzed with a message from Yui, safely settled at her coworker’s apartment for the night.

*I’m safe. Thinking about you. We’ll figure this out together, the way we figure everything out.*

He read the message twice, drawing what comfort he could from her steady presence even across the distance, then typed back: *I love you. I’m sorry this is touching your life too.*

*Don’t apologize for fighting something that needed fighting,* she replied immediately. *I chose this life knowing exactly who you are and what you care about. This is part of that. I’m not going anywhere.*

Something in his chest eased slightly at her words, though the underlying fear remained, sharp and present. He looked at the sealed evidence bag still sitting on his coffee table, the photograph inside a stark reminder that whatever they were fighting now extended far beyond a single company’s misconduct.

His phone buzzed once more. Unknown number, the pattern immediately familiar despite months of silence from this particular channel.

He stared at it for a long moment before answering, old instinct warring with genuine fear.

”Hello?”

Silence for a moment, then a voice he didn’t recognize at all — different from Nakamura, different from anyone he’d previously encountered. Calm, measured, carrying an unmistakable edge of controlled menace.

”You should have stopped investigating when you had the chance,” the voice said. ”This is your only warning. The next one won’t come as a photograph.”

The line went dead before Haruki could respond, leaving him sitting alone in his apartment, heart pounding, the full weight of exactly how dangerous this fight had become finally, completely settling into place.

Outside his window, Tokyo continued its indifferent nighttime rhythm, entirely unaware that somewhere within it, an enemy far more dangerous than anything the coalition had previously faced had just revealed, for the first time, that they were willing to act rather than simply threaten.

And Haruki understood, with growing dread, that whatever came next would test everything he’d built far more severely than any lawsuit or public scandal ever had.
