Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 146: Chapter 146: The System Speaks Again

Haruki hadn’t seen a system notification in over a year, and the sudden reappearance of that familiar blue glow at 2 AM startled him more than the threatening phone call had a few hours earlier.

He’d been sitting in the dark, unable to sleep, replaying the anonymous voice’s warning on a mental loop, when the window simply unfolded in front of him, exactly the way it had that very first day outside his old school gate, years and an entire lifetime ago.

He stared at the notification for a long moment, something cold settling in his chest that had nothing to do with the late hour. The system had gone quiet during the easiest, most hopeful stretch of his life — the wedding planning, the anime premiere, the steady, ordinary happiness of building something with Yui. Its sudden return felt less like a gift and more like confirmation of exactly how serious this new threat actually was.

He called her without hesitation, and she answered groggily, clearly having finally managed some sleep despite the day’s events. ”Haruki? It’s the middle of the night.”

”The system’s back,” he said, the words feeling strange in his mouth after so long without needing them. ”It’s warning me not to be alone right now.”

Silence, then the sound of her sitting up abruptly. ”Where are you?”

”My apartment. Alone.”

”Stay exactly where you are and lock every door and window you have. I’m calling the security specialist Watanabe hired. He’s twenty minutes away and he’ll be there faster than that once I explain the situation.”

The next hour passed in a blur of careful, methodical security — the specialist arriving, sweeping the apartment again for any additional surveillance devices, confirming the building’s entry points remained secure while Haruki sat on his couch, phone gripped tightly, the system’s warning still glowing faintly at the edge of his vision like an unwelcome reminder of exactly how far this fight had traveled from where it started.

By morning, the coalition had gathered again, exhaustion and fear visible on every face around the table. Nakamura arrived last, carrying his laptop with an expression that suggested he’d found something significant during the overnight hours.

”I traced the phone call,” he announced, without preamble. ”It bounced through six different relay servers, but I managed to isolate the originating signal to a specific building in central Tokyo.”

The room leaned forward collectively. ”Which building?” Hayato asked.

Nakamura pulled up a map on the shared screen, and Haruki felt his stomach drop as the address resolved into something disturbingly familiar.

”That’s three blocks from Yamashita Publishing,” Rika said slowly, reading the screen. ”That’s practically in our own backyard.”

”It gets worse,” Nakamura continued grimly. ”The building houses six different companies across various floors. One of them is a media consulting firm called Ariadne Strategic Partners.” He paused, letting the significance land. ”Ariadne provided consulting services to three different publishers during the exact period when Ghost Project originally collapsed, eleven years ago. Including, according to old financial records I managed to access last night, Rika’s father’s original investment fund.”

Rika’s face went pale. ”They advised my father directly. During the exact period he pulled Ghost Project’s funding.”

”It appears that way,” Nakamura confirmed. ”I haven’t confirmed direct involvement yet, but the coincidence is significant enough to warrant serious investigation.”

Kuroda leaned forward, studying the screen intently. ”Ariadne Strategic Partners. I remember that name now that you say it. They approached me once, years ago, offering consulting services for exactly the kind of contract restructuring that eventually became the predatory practices we’ve spent years fighting. I declined. I didn’t think much of it at the time.”

”You should have mentioned this sooner,” Suzune said, though her tone carried more urgency than accusation.

”I know,” Kuroda admitted. ”I genuinely didn’t connect it until just now. They presented themselves as a legitimate consulting firm. I had no reason to suspect anything sinister at the time.”

Watanabe, who’d been quietly reviewing public records on her own tablet throughout the conversation, finally spoke. ”I’m finding very little public information about Ariadne Strategic Partners beyond basic incorporation records. No public client list, no substantial online presence, no employee profiles on any professional networking site. For a company that’s apparently been operating for over a decade, that level of deliberate obscurity is itself significant.”

”So we’ve found our source,” Hayato said, though his voice carried more dread than triumph. ”Whoever’s actually been orchestrating this across multiple companies for over a decade.”

”We’ve found a lead,” Watanabe corrected carefully. ”Not confirmation. And given last night’s escalation to direct physical intimidation, I want everyone to understand clearly that pursuing this lead carries genuine risk. This isn’t a corporate lawsuit anymore. Whoever runs Ariadne has already demonstrated willingness to threaten people’s safety directly.”

The room fell into heavy silence, each person weighing the risk against everything they’d already built together, everything they’d already survived. Finally, Haruki spoke.

”I want to keep going. But I think we need outside help now — actual security professionals, possibly law enforcement involvement given the physical threats, not just our usual legal and investigative approach.”

”Agreed,” Mizuno said immediately. ”This has moved beyond what our coalition can safely handle alone.”

Watanabe nodded. ”I have contacts in corporate fraud investigation who specialize in exactly this kind of situation. I’ll reach out today. But everyone in this room needs to take the security recommendations seriously starting immediately. No more solo trips home late at night. No more discussing sensitive details over unsecured channels.”

The meeting continued for another hour, establishing careful new protocols, before finally dispersing into a tense, watchful version of their usual routine. Haruki called Yui the moment he left the building, needing to hear her voice, needing the grounding reassurance of her presence even across the distance between them.

”They found a lead,” he told her, once he’d explained the morning’s revelations. ”Something bigger than we expected. Possibly connected to Ghost Project’s original collapse eleven years ago.”

”That’s terrifying and also, weirdly, a little bit exciting,” Yui admitted. ”Is that a strange thing to feel?”

”No,” Haruki said, managing a tired smile despite everything. ”I think that’s exactly the right way to feel about it. Terrified and determined at the same time.”

”We’re bringing in actual security help, right? Not just handling this the way you handled Horizon?”

”Yes. Watanabe’s already reaching out to corporate fraud specialists. This is too dangerous to handle alone.”

”Good,” Yui said, relief clear in her voice. ”I love that you’re fighting this. I just need you to actually be careful while you do it. Promise me.”

”I promise,” Haruki said, meaning it completely, thinking of the system’s cold warning from the previous night, of the photograph still sitting sealed in evidence, of an enemy that had finally proven itself willing to act rather than simply threaten from a comfortable distance.

Outside, Tokyo continued its indifferent daily rhythm, entirely unaware that somewhere within its endless sprawl of ordinary office buildings, a company called Ariadne Strategic Partners sat quietly, deliberately obscured, at the center of a conspiracy that had already cost more than anyone in the coalition had previously understood.

And Haruki knew, with growing certainty, that finding them would only be the beginning of an even more dangerous fight still waiting ahead.
